His hobbies include basketball, soccer, traveling, being with friends and gaming. For his Mitzvah Project, Izzy will volunteer at the Baltimore Humane Society this summer taking care of the small animals.

For her Mitzvah Project, Sadie created blanket and book bundles that she donated to the Jewish Caring Network that were given to people in the hospital.

Rabbanit Bracha Jaffe to oversee Mercaz Dahan Center Following the retirement of Sandy Vogel as director of the Mercaz Dahan Center, we are excited to announce that Rabbanit Bracha Jaffe will be assuming this role for the coming year. Rabbanit Bracha’s responsibilities will add a new facet to her position as Community Educator at Beth Tfiloh.

“Rabbanit Bracha’s knowledge and experience in Jewish education make her well-suited to oversee the offerings of our extremely successful Mercaz Dahan Center,” said Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg.

“I very much look forward to continuing the outstanding work of

my colleague Sandy Vogel in creating quality adult learning experiences and classes at BT. In addition. I am excited about developing relationships with our Mercaz learners and faculty,” said Rabbanit Bracha.

Beth Tfiloh Congregation and Winands Road Synagogue Center Announce Union

Randallstown synagogue to close after 50 years; members welcomed by Beth Tfiloh The Board of Directors of Winands Road Synagogue Center in Randallstown, Maryland has approved the union of its congregation with Beth Tfiloh Congregation in Pikesville, Maryland, effective March 29, 2018. The decision was affirmed by the Beth Tfiloh Congregation Board of Directors.

The Winands Road Synagogue Center held its final Shabbat services on March 24, 2018. All of its members are invited to attend services and continue their membership at Beth Tfiloh Congregation, which shares its commitment to Orthodox tradition in a welcoming and diverse Jewish community.

“When we combined with Beth Jacob over ten years ago, it was truly a union made in heaven,” said Beth Tfiloh Congregation Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg. “How fortunate we are to have another shidduch (match) with the same promise of adding to the vibrancy of our synagogue community.”

Winands Road members are looking forward to joining BT. “My experience so far is that everyone is very friendly and inviting. The rabbis that I have met have been very welcoming and open,” said Randallstown resident Nathan Sefret, a Winands Road Synagogue member for

almost 50 years and its president for the past 15 years.

Morris Wise, Winands Road’s former vice president and treasurer who managed the merger process, says he’s very happy about this union, noting that “Beth Tfiloh is the premier Modern Orthodox synagogue in a wide area.”

Wise also praises Beth Tfiloh’s clergy, staff and volunteers who were “warm and welcoming” throughout the process.

Some members started attending Beth Tfiloh as soon as they heard Winands Road was closing, like long-time member Joel Davis. “When I first came, I met a

Perhaps its name will shed some light on it. Shavuot means “weeks” as this holiday marks the counting of the weeks of the Omer offering starting from the second night of Pesach. Still, that feels less like its essence and more like simply noting the passage of time.

The sages noticed that as well and, over time, imbued this holiday with new meaning. They even gave it a new name: z’man matan Torateinu – the time when the Torah was given to us.

Shavuot has since become the holiday most closely associated with learning Torah – many people stay up all night and do just that. To be fair, this custom

Taking a closer look at Shavuot reveals a common thread running through it. Shavuot is the most unpretentious of holidays. It is the humblest of holidays.

• The Torah was given to us on the humblest of all mountains: Mount Sinai!

• The Torah was given to the humblest of all men – Moses!

• There are no special days of Chol HaMoed sandwiched in between days of chag.

• Its date is not determined by the new moon. Rather, it is tethered to the previous holiday – to the second day of Pesach.

• There are no special mitzvot associated with Shavuot.

• Our custom is to eat dairy products – on a holiday! Many reasons are given for the delicious custom of Shavuot cheesecake. A favorite is that it connects us to the Land of Israel, “a land flowing with milk and honey.”

Shavuot sends us a clear message.

There is beauty in the quiet spaces when we step back and allow others to take center stage.

The Talmud says it well: “Wherever you find the greatness of the Holy One blessed be He, there you find His humility.” (BT Tractate Megilah 31a).

KIDSONGS CONCERT: Mr. Brian Singer rocked the Zimmerman Gym with his greatest hits at the PreSchool Kidsongs Concert.

MODEL SEDER: Beth Tfiloh Kindergarten students, along with their parents and grandparents, joined Pikesville Senior Center Council members for a model Passover seder.

The students and seniors took turns reciting from the Hagaddah and telling the Exodus story using props, games and songs.

MY FAMILY STORY: Beth Tfiloh's eighth grade researched and depicted their families' diverse stories through beautiful 3-D art projects as part of the My Family Story Jewish history projects, co-sponsored by the Jewish Museum of Maryland and Beit Hatfutsot museum in Israel. Mazal tov to Maya T. ‘22 and Erela I. ‘22, whose projects won the Baltimore competition!

NHS INDUCTION: Congratulations to the 53 High School students who were inducted into Beth Tfiloh’s National Honor Society chapter, which promotes and recognizes outstanding scholarship, service, character and leadership.

CHIDON HATANACH: Kol hakavod to the 34 BT Middle School students who qualified for the Chidon HaTanach (Bible Contest) National Finals competition in April, where they will compete against 200 other students from across the US for the chance to reach the international competition in Israel next year. The students spent six months studying 81 chapters of Tanach in preparation for this competition.

NATIONAL WALKOUT DAY: We are tremendously proud of our High School students who organized a moving memorial service and tribute to the victims of the recent Stoneman Douglas High School shooting and their families on National Walkout Day.

Meet our Members The Rubin Family Becca and Justin Rubin are another branch on the growing Fishbein family tree that has taken root at Beth Tfiloh.

Her grandfather, Irvin Fishbein, joined BT more than 50 years ago, served as the shul’s president from 2001-2003, and at the age of 95 still regularly attends services. Her parents, Joan and Larry Feldman, are active shul members, and Joan is Beth Tfiloh’s Director of Communications.

Becca, a labor and delivery nurse at Sinai Hospital who will complete her family nurse practitioner degree in the fall, graduated Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School in 2003. Justin is an ICU nurse at Sinai Hospital. Their three daughters all attend BT School: Layla ’30, Dafna ’32 and Orly ’32.

Between working weekend shifts at Sinai and their school schedules, Becca and Justin make the most of

their limited free time together with their girls, attending Orioles games or watching their girls dress up and play family together at home. They and their daughters are regular attendees at BT’s Cookie Minyan and Mini Rebecca and Justin Rubin with their daughters, Orly, Layla and Dafna.

Development News Sally and Harold Goldberg Music Fund The Sally and Harold Goldberg Music Fund was established in memory of Harold Goldberg z”l, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, who loved all music and reveled in the traditional melodies and tunes sang at the BT morning minyan.

When asked about his life, Sally Goldberg, Harold’s loving wife of 62 years, recalled her late husband being happiest at Beth Tfiloh. Harold, a selfproclaimed “minyanaire,” had a special appreciation for music and Judaism.

“He loved music of all kinds, especially military music,” Sally said. His daily routine included putting on Tefillin and praying from the cherished siddur he kept with him at all times—and which the family continues to use every Kabbalat Shabbat.

Beth Tfiloh is like a second home to the Goldbergs. Living just down the street since the synagogue’s move to Old Court Road in 1965, Harold and Sally were active members of the shul.

They enjoyed a lively social scene with their friends through the Couples Club.

Harold supported the BT Brotherhood and Sally is a past president of the BT Sisterhood. Harold worked 50 years

as a dentist and met many wonderful patients through his work, many of whom became good friends.

Their children, Jody, Bruce and Wendy attended BT Hebrew School, and celebrated their Bat/Bar Mitzvahs and ultimately their weddings at BT. Harold was always proud of his family and their accomplishments. He was a loving Grandpa or “Pampa,” as he was called, and considered each grandchild a true blessing. He was so thankful to God for all seven of them. They were his “riches;” and his five great-grandchildren were a special bonus.

Harold was so proud that his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grew up in strong Jewish homes with Jewish values and that they received, and continue to receive, a Jewish education.

Making Stock Transfers to BT: Why and How Despite recent changes in the tax law, transfers of appreciated stock and other publicly traded securities to charities continue to be an extremely valuable tax savings strategy since transfers avoid a taxable gain on the increase in the stock’s value, and may result in a charitable contribution equal to the stock's appreciated value.

Many of our generous BT school and congregation supporters transfer appreciated securities to Beth Tfiloh in payment of their Annual Campaign contributions or other pledges. Of course, we advise all of our donors to consult with their tax advisors to fully evaluate any tax strategy, which may vary depending on their individual financial and tax situation.

Former Winands Road Synagogue chairman and Beth Tfiloh School parent Dr. Jeffrey Sagel notes that Winands was “the sum of three or four previous mergers, and now we are moving forward.” Sagel believes that this merger offers former Winands Road members a wide variety of activities and programs for all ages, which “fits very nicely with our congregation. We’ve just gained.”

Beth Tfiloh Congregation was established in 1921. It has a membership of over 1,200 families, and is one of the largest Modern Orthodox Jewish congregations in the country. Winands Road Synagogue was located on Winands Road in Randallstown for 50 years, with early roots in Baltimore dating back to the early 1900s. Both congregations benefitted from longstanding rabbinic leadership. Rabbi Sholom Salfer was the spiritual leader of Winands Road Synagogue since 1976.

Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg has served as Beth Tfiloh Congregation’s senior rabbi since 1978.

Plans are being made for the eventual sale of the Winands Road Synagogue property. The Winands Road Synagogue Cemetery will be transferred to the Jewish Cemetery Association of Greater Baltimore.

ENTHUSIASTIC VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR FOOD GIVEAWAY Third Wednesday of the month, 8 am-12 pm, Liberty Grace Church, 3400 Copley Rd., 21215 Through a partnership with the Maryland Food Bank, members distribute food to low-income community members in the Ashburton neighborhood. MISHLOACH MANOT PROJECT - BT CARES had a wonderful response to its Mishloach Manot Making Project on the Sunday before Purim, with 90 enthusistic volunteers who made 850 Mishloach Manot bags for nursing homes, including: Atrium Village, Tudor Heights, Sunrise, Springwell, Springhouse, Jewish Community Services, Weinberg Park, Weinberg Village, Weinberg Gardens and Terrace, King David, and Brightview.
