For his Mitzvah Project Ethan is running in the Brigance Brigade 5K, the Fiesta 5K, the Color Run, Mitzvah Miles, and the Hopewell Run Reach Out and Run Race to raise money and awareness for these causes.

Sisterhood wishes all a joyous Shavuot!

Brotherhood-Sisterhood Shabbat: Saturday, May 9 will honor the participation of the Brotherhood and Sisterhood in the essential volunteer activities of the synagogue. Members will take an active part in the services.

A Kiddush luncheon will follow.

On Tuesday, May 26, a special program, “Women of the Wall,” will be sponsored by Sisterhood at 7:30 pm in the Tuvin Auditorium.

Modern perspectives on the kotel will be presented by Rabbi Elisa Sachs of Baltimore Hebrew Congregation. A dessert reception will follow. RSVP: Anita Knisbacher (443-798-8888 or ladylingo@verizon.net).

Governor Hogan Visits BT

By Lindsay Gaister On March 29, before the Middle School play Wizard of Oz began, Mrs. Schorr and Rabbi Wohlberg got on stage in front of a sold-out audience to announce a special surprise. Governor Larry Hogan was at Beth Tfiloh!

Governor Hogan came to BT to buy our chametz before Passover.

After a fun conversation between the two, including the fact that they have a personal relationship and that the Governor loves the rabbi’s Maserati, it was time to get down to business.

Rabbi Wohlberg asked Governor Hogan how much money he was prepared to offer for the collection of chametz. When the Governor stated

that he was prepared to pay $5 total, the rabbi questioned him, “That’s all they have in the budget for the State of Maryland?” The crowd laughed and the Governor explained that he was “watching every dollar of the tax payers’ money.”

Following the exchange of the money, Governor Hogan announced that instead of keeping the chametz, he would be donating it to two worthy organizations and called upon Fran Pruce, CFO of Health Care for the Homeless and Nicole Battle, CEO from GEDCO: Govans Ecumenical Development Corporation.

Health Care for the Homeless is an organization that works to “prevent and end homelessness for vulnerable individuals and families by providing

quality, integrated health care and promoting access to affordable housing and sustainable incomes through direct service, advocacy, and community engagement.”

GEDCO is a “Baltimore-based non-profit service provider ...[that] primarily serves low-income seniors

and previously homeless men and women through affordable housing and other support programs.”

Pruce and Battle accepted the food donations and thanked Rabbi Wohlberg, Governor Hogan, and all of the members of Beth Tfiloh who continuously show how much BT Cares through acts of selfless giving and hands-on volunteering.

At the conclusion of the transaction, Governor Hogan wished everyone a Happy Passover and after his visit, there was an out-pouring of chametz donations from Beth Tfiloh students, families, and members, so that more food could be donated to GEDCO. Following the presentation, a private reception was held in honor of the Governor.

This was truly a special day for Beth Tfiloh. BT Cares would like to thank Governor Hogan, Fran Pruce, Nicole Battle, and everyone who made donations for helping BT continue to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.

The Beth Tfiloh Professional Network sponsors breakfast forums throughout the year to provide faceto-face networking and to share the wealth of business and professional expertise within the BT family.

Placing the “Spotlight” on Joel Cohn and Jill Spector

By Hannah C. ‘16 My parents could not have chosen a better school for my brother, Alex Cohn (’14), and me than Beth Tfiloh. This School and community have had such a major impact on both of our lives ever since our first days in PreSchool. When my parents, Jill Spector and Joel Cohn, were deciding where to send their children to school in the Baltimore area, the decision was never really too difficult for them. When they first set foot in Beth Tfiloh’s halls, they knew that this school was different. That it was special. It only seems fitting to Alex and me that when Mrs. Schorr contacted my parents inquiring about chairing Spotlight 2015, Beth Tfiloh’s annual scholarship fundraising event, my parents felt honored and eager to participate in this incredible fundraiser and help give back to the school that has given us so much in our lives.

Both of my parents recognize the importance of a Jewish education and have witnessed firsthand the tremendous impact it has had on Alex and me.

SPOTLIGHT Having attended Beth Tfiloh for 14, going on 15 years, I fully appreciate the importance of Spotlight. As I prepare for senior year and my brother completes his freshman year at the University of Pennsylvania, we both agree that this school has shaped both of us into proud and passionate Jews who feel ready to tackle college and the rest of our lives in a way that would make our parents, and School, proud.

But without Spotlight, not everyone gets to experience Beth Tfiloh; 40% of Beth Tfiloh students receive some form of financial aid. It is crazy to me to think that, without the help of Spotlight, four out of every 10 of BT’s students could not experience the joy of Beth Tfiloh, which ranges from Lower School productions, to the eighth-grade Shabbaton, all the way to attending the AIPAC Policy Conference.

Often, new students at any school can struggle to find their places within their school environment. How can I make friends? Will people accept me for who I really am? At Beth Tfiloh, new students may worry about this before heading into the school year in August. However, once school begins, new students immediately

teams, spend time in the Arts Department, or help make the school yearbook, you can always explore your interests or find something you are passionate about at Beth Tfiloh. These are a few of the many reasons why my parents chose Beth Tfiloh for Alex and me; the school exists as an institution in which we can thrive in every aspect and develop not only academically, but Jewishly as well.

Aside from the all the incredible opportunities that Beth Tfiloh provides for its students, it provides one item that few schools in Baltimore can claim to provide: Beth Tfiloh instills a steadfast and passionate love of Judaism from PreSchool until twelfth grade. According to my father, “Now more than ever, as more Jews are becoming less affiliated, we need to provide a Jewish education for as many students we can.” “This,” he concludes, “stands as one of the most important goals for the current Jewish generation.”

Thanks to our most loyal and generous donors, the Chazak Campaign has exceeded its goal, raising over $18 million dollars and involving more than 120 families in this historic effort to ensure a strong Beth Tfiloh for generations to come. 6TH GRADE LEARNS ABOUT EUROPE Sixth graders traveled throughout Europe, learning about the entire continent in just 45 minutes!

WIZARD OF OZ - Audiences enjoyed the Middle School's wonderful performances of The Wizard of Oz.

BRAIN LESSON - Sixth graders learned about the parts of the brain and how each one participates in the amazing process of transforming adolescents into young adults.

MODEL SEDER - Kindergarten students hosted 15 Pikesville Senior Center members for an intergenerational, interactive model Passover seder.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY: BT's National Honor Society chapter bid farewell to its outgoing leadership and welcomed nearly 50 new members.

AIMING HIGH - Mrs. Zipora Schorr enjoys a celebratory moment at the conclusion of the AIMS 4-day visit last March.

AIMS Visiting Team concludes accreditation visit Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School concluded on a successful Association of Independent Schools (AIMS) accreditation visit this past March. The four-day visit was a key component of a process that consisted of a two-year school-wide self-study and an independent evaluation by a visiting team of 18 educators and school administrators from AIMS schools in Maryland, DC and Delaware.

According to AIMS the evaluation process, which occurs every ten years, serves three primary purposes: to assure quality by requiring that member schools meet or exceed AIMS Standards; to promote institutional reflection, analysis, and self-assessment by asking the school to demonstrate a high degree of congruence between its practice and its philosophy; and to assure continuing quality by having the school develop a written Action Plan that charts a course for future school improvement.

The school’s administration looks forward to receiving the report of the visiting AIMS team later this year, and to developing an Action Plan that will no doubt reflect the school’s commitment to educational excellence, individual attention, and Jewish values.

National Honor Society: A Bright Future

Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School’s National Honor Society chapter inducted a new and promising group of High School students on March 25th. This new beginning, however, was accompanied with a sad departure.

Elan H. ‘15, Benjamin F. ‘15, and I are all seniors previously on the NHS board.

As board members, we are proud of our chapter’s growth over the past year, as our executive board raised thousands of dollars, created service opportunities resulting in hundreds of community service hours, and made a great impact on the Beth Tfiloh Community.

As in past years, NHS members have focused on tutoring peers in academic coursework in both the Middle School and High School. Two years ago, however, the National Honor Society organized a new service project called the Tutoring Outreach Program. TOP, the result of our partnership with the US Dream Academy, a national after school tutoring and mentoring organization, offers an organized medium for NHS students to mentor children attending Pimlico Elementary and Middle School. Five days each week, NHS member volunteer to help enhance these students’ education through the development and implementation of twelve clubs and classes. The curricula written for these twelve classes have been so effective that US Dream Academy recruited Beth Tfiloh students

Varsity Track and Field team off to a great start At the Track team’s first meet of the season, Josh R. ‘18 came in first place at 4:47 and Liam L. ‘17 came in second at 5:01, both achieving their personal best scores!

At a later meet, Teva V. ‘17 posted a time of 5:58 in the mile run, her first run ever.

Liam L. ‘17 shaved 5 seconds off his previous time in the same event while Noah B. ‘17 ran a personal best time of 5:32.

BT also turned in some strong performances in the field events. Liam L. ‘17 in the long jump and Adi S. ‘17 in the shot put and discus each earned high marks in their events. We are looking to continue improving during the last two track meets of the season!

PS AND LS LEARNING TOGETHER: Our 2’s and first graders teamed up to learn about weights and balances.
