The Circular Hand Motions During Candle Lighting? By Rabbi Dr. Eli Yoggev Shabbat is just about to enter. You take a match and light the Shabbat candles, waving your hands around them three times in a circular motion. You then cover your eyes and recite a blessing over the candles, setting the tone for a Shabbat full of light for you and your loved ones. One aspect of this whole procedure that stands out is the circular hand motions. It’s hard to think of another setting where we perform this same movement. The explanation often offered is that these hand movements welcome in the “Shabbat Queen,” gesturing to her— three times for emphasis—to enter and enhance our lives for the upcoming twenty-five hours. Another explanation, to which I really connect, sees the movements as a centering mechanism. As Shabbat enters, we gather in our energies—once, twice, and three times— in order to help us center and focus on the spiritual side of Shabbat after a long work week. What is less known, however, is the halachic basis for this movement. It goes back to the order in which we normally recite blessings over mitzvot. The Sages teach us that the blessing must always precede the performance of a mitzvah (this is called oh-ver l’asiyatan). Think back to Chanukah. There we sang the two (or three) blessings and only then took the Shamash and kindled the Chanukiah (the actual mitzvah). On Shabbat things are different. The blessing over the Shabbat candles proclaims that it is Shabbat and through this Friday afternoon is
halachically transformed into “Shabbat Eve.” Accordingly, lighting the Shabbat candles after this verbal proclamation is akin to kindling fire when it is already Shabbat, an act forbidden by the Torah (Shemot 35:3). This is where the hand movements come in. It seems that the original version of this motion was a basic covering of the flames with one’s hands (it only later morphed into the circular hand motions perhaps in part based on the reasons mentioned above). This covering allows us to perform a mitzvah after the blessing and still maintain the sanctity of Shabbat. We light first, while it’s still “Friday afternoon.” We then cover the flames with our hands and make a blessing, transforming Friday into Shabbat. After the blessing, we uncover and look at the flames. The looking at the candles becomes our mitzvah which follows a blessing (and does nothing to affect Shabbat’s sanctity because the candles are already lit). The idea of saying a blessing prior to the mitzvah is good overall direction for life because everything goes back to our attitude as we approach new endeavors. When we are in a mindset of blessing and positivity, our experiences are uplifted and energized. That’s why this order is so important! And this is my blessing to you prior to your Shabbat mitzvahs: may your Shabbat be filled with positivity and blessing for you and all of your loved ones! Shabbat Shalom!

PESACH @ BT PESACH PROGRAMS FOR EVERYONE Pre-Pesach Women’s Night with Dr. Zipora Schorr: “Tradition and Modernity: Putting Joy into Pesach”
SELLING YOUR CHAMETZ Because the rabbis realized that disposing of chametz completely would involve a considerable financial hardship for many, they devised a process whereby a Jew could sell his or her chametz to a non-Jew before Pesach and repurchase it after the conclusion of the holiday. This sale has been structured so that the non-Jew will find it in his or her best interests to resell the chametz after Pesach. Because this sale involves many technicalities, it has been traditional for the rabbi of the congregation to act as the agent for those who sell their chametz. Everyone who prepares his or her home for Pesach should arrange with the rabbi to sell their chametz. This is effectuated by signing a Statement of Authorization (Shtar Harsha’ah). Our online authorization form meets the Halachic requirements and should be completed by Tuesday, April 7. If you own chametz in several places, such as your home and a vacation home, include all of the addresses. It is customary to make a contribution in connection with the selling of chametz. Please make your check payable to the “Beth Tfiloh Charity Fund” to assist the many needy individuals in the Baltimore area who will not be able to properly observe the Passover holiday without some financial assistance. Your generosity will be most appreciated. REMINDER - Please wait a brief period after the end of Passover before using your chametz in order for Rabbi Wohlberg to have sufficient time to repurchase it on your behalf.
