From Shabbat to Shabbat: A Typical Week at Beth Tfiloh By Zipora Schorr, Director of Education You could probably call the past week at Beth Tfiloh a “typical week.” But in many respects, it was anything but typical for a Jewish day school, or for any school, for that matter. Let me tell you why. Meaningful Milestones It began last Friday with two special milestone programs: a Middle School assembly recognizing our Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebrants, and the 1st Grade Siddur Ceremony. It was wonderful to see the pride of our Middle School students upon receiving a Siddur in honor of their upcoming s’machot, as well as witnessing the palpable excitement of our 1st Graders upon receiving their first siddurium.

Shabbat @BT: All Stars and Small Stars Then going into Shabbat, our 1st Graders were honored at BT Shabbat services as they became the Small All Stars together with our High School students as part of the annual All Star Shabbat, where our High School students ran the entire service in the Beth Tfiloh Sanctuary. It was an incredible experience seeing the “bookends” of our school – our 1st Graders who sang “I Open My Siddur With Love” and our High School All Stars who led services at BT Congregation, read Torah, gave Torah insights, and delivered the sermon. This beautiful Shabbat morning was capped off by our High School a

Dalia attends Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School and is the sister of Alexis and Shana Leibowitz. She is the granddaughter of Sara and Hyman Rubinstein, and Maury Leibowitz and the late Rheda Luntz. Her hobbies include skiing, surfing, snowboarding, skateboarding, basketball, soccer, guitar, piano and singing. For her Mitzvah Project, Dalia is raising money for Chai Lifeline, an international charity dedicated to helping sick children and their families, in honor of one of her friends and fellow student.

Live from BT! It’s Friday Night! On Friday, March 3, join the BT family for the next monthly Friday Night Live — a pre-Shabbat Oneg featuring live music, delicious food, l’chaims, ruach and more. The festivities begin at 5 pm in the Tuvin Library and are followed by a Mincha and a beautiful Carlebach-style Kabbalat Shabbat service at 5:40 pm in the Epstein Chapel. Jacob attends Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School and is the brother of Allison “Alli” Schimmel. He is the grandson of Brenda and Herbert Schimmel, and Madeline and Larry Fox. His hobbies include lacrosse, soccer, basketball and playing video games. For his Mitzvah Project, Jacob volunteered with Coach Jen for the Sunday Sports League and worked with kids ages 3-6. 3

Meet our Members

The annual Multi-Sisterhood Luncheon will be held on Tuesday, March 14 at Ner Tamid Synagogue. Join us and catch up with the ladies from the other nearby Sisterhoods. There will be a boutique beginning at 11:30 am; lunch will be served at 12:30 pm. Judy Pachino will discuss her book, Question of Heritage. $22 per person. While Jessica and Steve Fink, and their children, Ruby and Jaret, are relative newcomers to Baltimore, they have already become immersed in Jewish life at BT and in our community. Steve is the Director of News Programming & Promotion for CBS Local Digital Media; Jessica is Librarian at the Center for Jewish Education (CJE). She also volunteers as a Community Connector for CJE, a pilot program that helps engage young families who are interested in becoming more involved with Jewish life, activity, and community. Jessica encourages BT young families to contact her if she can be of assistance in getting more involved in the Baltimore Jewish community. Ruby and Jaret both attend BT PreSchool. Ruby loves fairytale books, and playing with Magna-Tiles. Once summer is here though, nothing is more exciting to her than going to BT Camp and spending as much time as possible in the pool. Jaret is obsessed with cars and trucks, and loves listening to and singing the Star Spangled Banner (thanks to a book he found in class at BT, of course!). Jessica is an avid runner and wakes up before the sun rises for her daily dose. She also loves how her Connector job with CJE has immersed her in the Baltimore Jewish community. Steve is a news junky and die-hard Ravens/Orioles fan who recently launched the website StudyFinds.org and hosts the podcast “Dad From Scratch.” The Finks decided to join the BT community after their second year in Baltimore. Jessica taught 3rd grade in the Lower School; when she stopped working after Jaret was born, they

decided to switch shuls so “we could continue having BT as a part of our lives.” They also then enrolled Ruby in the PreSchool — this year Jaret started BT PreSchool as well. “There is an incomparable family feeling at BT that we wanted to make a part of our lives,” remarked Steve. The Finks have been especially impressed with the warmth and hospitality of the BT community. Since joining BT, several families who they didn’t know before invited them into their homes for Shabbat dinners or lunches, including Hazzan Avi and Ahuva Albrecht. Jessica noted that “coming from Reform backgrounds we weren’t always used to this practice - but it’s one of the most endearing things we love about BT, and one we’ve taken on ourselves. BT exemplifies family and friendship, and we’re so thankful for so many great memories these last few years.”

Other highlights included our Middle School Mitzvah Week, with hands-on projects ranging from tefillin making to challah baking. In between, we provided opportunities for our students to interact with each other as part of our school community and explore common issues, including a pairing of our 12th Grade and 7th Grade girls, with our “veterans” helping our 7th graders navigate Middle School life. A Broadway-worthy “Beauty and the Beast” At the same time, our Theatre Department produced yet another phenomenally successful production, “Beauty and the Beast,” which responded to the unprecedented demand by adding yet a fourth show. It was wonderful to see students in major roles who had never

As proud as I am of our students’ stellar performance on stage, I am equally impressed with the tremendous determination and fortitude of our students, no doubt inspired by their teachers and administrators. Despite performing four shows of “Beauty and the Beast” the entire cast was present in school each school day, learning, taking exams and fully participating in school life.

Professional Development As part of our ongoing emphasis on lifelong learning, we had a team of eight administrators who went to the Prizmah National Jewish Day School Conference in Chicago from Sunday through Tuesday, participating as pioneers in the newly formed Day School professional organization, networking and sharing with 1,000 Jewish Day School participants from the U.S. and Canada. Shabbat Shira at BT Synagogue This Friday we just concluded our 2nd Grade Welcome Day at which our students had a Siyum to celebrate their completion of the first perek (chapter) of Bereishit (Genesis). This Shabbat was Shabbat Shira, the “Shabbat of Song.” And so our students were singing in shul again, and celebrating Tu B’Shevat in Kid Cong with Mr. Brian Singer, and PreSchool Cookie Minyan with Morah Marci Globerman. Finally . . . Alum! Organized by Alumni Director Michelle Cherry ’02, our annual College Park Reunion was this past Sunday,

when we had the opportunity to meet up with our alumni at the University of Maryland. Rabbi Posner, Rabbi Moss, and Cherie Brownstein all greeted BT alum, some of whom are graduating this year and making their mark in the professional world.

College Park Alumni In the first chapter of the Torah – which our 2nd graders just completed – we are told that the world was created in seven days. In the past seven days at BT we have witnessed worlds of opportunities for our children. From Jewish leadership to arts and athletics… from learning about mitzvot to learning about each other. It has been an amazing week from Shabbat to Shabbat. Although it was a pretty typical week for BT – it was truly extraordinary in its scope, depth, and lasting impact on our school community. Hope your Shabbat was as good as ours. Looking forward to the coming week!

BT Camp to celebrate 75th Summer Spectacular In the summer of 1943, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was President, Benny Goodman and His Orchestra’s Taking a Chance on Love was at the top of the Billboard charts, and Beth Tfiloh had for the very first time, a summer day camp. The idea was simple: provide Beth Tfiloh children a summer program of wholesome recreation integrated with an emphasis on Jewish living in a natural setting. Seventy-five years ago, approximately 75 campers between the ages of five and 12 attended Beth Tfiloh Camps in the Forest Park neighborhood of Baltimore. Celebrating 75 summers is a very large accomplishment. Our hope is to bring together several generations of camp families both current and past to create a day filled with old memories and new fun. We’d love to hear your stories and share them with others. We’d also love

for you to join us on Sunday, August 6th for our 75th Summer Spectacular. From 2 p.m. until 9 p.m., camp will be packed with a schedule of activities that include our ropes course and zip lines, the Sachs Family Lake featuring a huge water slide, arts and crafts projects, sports, swimming in our pools, an evening cookout, and closing with an amazing fireworks display put on by the “first family” of fireworks, Zambelli. During this spectacular event, we want to share your stories and memories and allow younger generations to experience what camp has been like for each generation. This event provides a unique and unprecedented opportunity for Beth Tfiloh Camps alumni to come together for one day at an incredible event. Danny Ayalon has served in Israel’s Foreign Service for over 20 years as political advisor to three different prime ministers, Ehud Barak, Binyamin Netanyahu, and Ariel Sharon, and as Israel’s Ambassador to Washington. Upon his retirement from diplomatic service in 2006, he joined Nefesh B’Nefesh, an organization committed to revitalizing Aliyah. In 2009, he was sworn in as a Member of Knesset representing the Yisrael Beiteinu party, and was appointed deputy to Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman.
