Tweeting and Twittering on Shabbat Shira By Rabbanit Bracha Jaffe, Beth Tfiloh Community Educator Rabbanit Bracha Jaffe @Brachanit #ShabbatShira #SongOfTheSea #TheJewsAreSaved Parshat Beshalach is always read on Shabbat Shira – the Shabbat of Song. This is when we read Shirat Hayam – the Song of the Sea – which the Jews joyously sang to God after crossing the sea safely during the Exodus from Egypt. This year Shabbat Shira falls out on the last Shabbat in January – and as always – just around the time of Tu B’Shvat, the celebrated Jewish New Year for fruit trees. Rabbanit Bracha Jaffe @Brachanit #ShabbatShira #FeedTheBirds There is an ancient custom to feed the birds breadcrumbs on this Shabbat by shaking out our tablecloths outside after the meal. Well, we know that birds roost in (fruit) trees but are there more connections between Shabbat Shira and birds? Rabbanit Bracha Jaffe @Brachanit #BirdsSangAtTheSea There was a popular local saying among the Jews: “Birds Sang At The Sea”. We are grateful to the birds and we feed them to remember the joy of our salvation and the birds’ singing to express that joy.

Two troublemakers put out some manna early Shabbat morning to disprove Moshe. The birds are our heroes – they ate up the manna before the other Jews were up! BT Young Professionals Beth Tfiloh Young Professionals (BTYP) provides a vibrant and welcoming home at Beth Tfiloh Congregation for young professionals, ages 21 to mid/late 30s. With the support and leadership of Rabbi Eli Yoggev and Marlene Hollander, this new group provides a space for young professionals to connect with one another and with Judaism through fun and engaging programming.

DISABILITIES AWARENESS - BT High School held a two-day disabilities awareness program, where students explored the challenges faced by people with physical, emotional, hidden, and overt disabilities on a daily basis. <THE MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND performed for our PreSchool students as part of one of their daily Chanukah celebrations.

Teachers from Szandor Schreiber Gymnazium in Budapest visited Beth Tfiloh to learn about our school and our community. Our guests observed and taught several High School classes and offered insights into Jewish life in Hungary. A group of Beth Tfiloh teachers visited their Jewish day school in Budapest last year, and a group of our High School students will be traveling to Budapest later this year as part of this continuing exchange program that gives our teachers and students insight into the European Jewish community.

Development News ALUMNI WEEKEND 2017

Ari Jacobson ‘06 and Stephanie Riederman ‘06 were inducted into the Beth Tfiloh Athletic Hall of Fame at the All-School Convocation, followed by a brunch reception with their family and friends.

Beth Tfiloh welcomed back alumni for the annual Alumni Brunch on November 22, where alums re-connected with classmates and caught up with their BT teachers.

This year, the classes of 2002, 2007 and 2012 came home for Thanksgiving and reunited for their milestone reunions.

DONOR RECOGNITION DINNER Over 200 Beth Tfiloh donors of $1,000 or more, as well as Mercaz’s most committed adult learners, were invited to a special recognition dinner prior to Dr. Efraim Zuroff's lecture on December 6. High School student Olivia P. ‘18 shared her BT story with the audience, and how her years at BT helped shape her identity and prepare her for her graduation next June. Kolenu, the High School a cappella choir, performed for the guests as well. Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg described the amazing variety of services and programs for adults and children. Dr. Schorr thanked the donors for their generous support of Beth Tfiloh which ensures our ability to provide the highest level of educational excellence. 8
