Five suspects were arrested here in Bohlokong, last week, for dealing in dagga. The South African Police Service (SAPS) reported that an intelligence driven operation with the station and district crime combating units resulted in the arrests. Spokesperson for the SAPS in the Free State Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring said the arrests took place on Friday, 19 August last week. According to Mophiring, SAPS Bethlehem Crime Intelligence, Thabo Mofutsanyana District Crime Combating Unit and Bohlokong police station addressed the community’s outcry about people allegedly selling drugs in the area. The team had previously identified a few houses and searches were conducted. Four suspects were arrested for dealing in dagga while cash and marijuana were seized by authorities. In one house, the team found a built in tuck shop operating within the house.

There, SAPS found a scale, mask, peanuts, chocolate cookies and candies. It is believed that the cookies and candies were laced with cannabis and an unknown drug. The items were already packaged at a high street value to customers. The suspect also had large quantities of dagga and cash in their possession. The suspect, a 36 year old, was apprehended and all exhibits were confiscated.

Here's how farming is becoming fashionable FOURIESBURG | CORNÉ VAN NOORDWYK

published in the GCIS

The Free State Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) is on a mission to make agriculture fashionable. The department recently hosted the Youth in Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (YAFF) Awards that attracted about 200 young farmers from the region. The YAFF Awards was introduced by the National Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development to groom 2 500 youth owned enterprises countrywide every year. Speaking at the awards ceremony, Free State MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development Thembeni Nxangisa said this was a turning point for youngsters to take farming seriously and to contribute enormously to the food security of the country. “The Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has also made great strides in attracting young people to take advantage of career opportunities within the sector. This will also shift the mindsets of young people from being job seekers to creating a platform for them to become creators of employment,” said Nxangisa. Tebello Yvonne Mokoena (27) of Masela Lefika Farming here in Fouriesburg, Mashaeng, is one such exemplary young farmer. Mokoena won R50 000 for her cooperative as one of the recipients of the MEC Special Award andR10 000 as a second runner up for best subsistence farmer. Mokoena and her three male partners started farming vegetables in a backyard in 2019. “In 2020, we were allowed to use four hectors of municipal land. We expanded our organic farming crop, which includes cabbage, potatoes, tomatoes, beetroot, green beans, pumpkin, spinach, green peppers and chillies.” She says the YAFF programme helped Masela Lefika Farming with knowledge and working tools. “The department also gave us a R2 500 voucher in 2021 and a R5 500 voucher earlier this year to help us acquire tools and products for the farm.” Mokoena says they aim to employ youth in their area in the coming seasons. “Through youth employment, we will be able to help build the economy and minimise food insecurity. We dream of supplying our herbs and canned food internationally.” For more information on youth opportunities, visit www.ard.fs.gov.za, call 051 861 8432 or email hodofficemanager@dard.gov.za This article was originally Vuk'uzenzele

Free State police are looking into a possible extortion syndicate after arresting a second police officer this year for allegedly accusing innocent men of rape and then demanding money to quash the non existent case. Constable Mosimanegape Samuel Seleke, 35, was the second police officer to be arrested following an incident in which he and his accomplices allegedly accused a man of raping a woman. According to Free State police spokesperson, Captain Stephen Thakeng, the man was threatened with arrest, and that the sentence for rape would be 25 years if he did not pay R100 000. "The victim was then forced to the bank, where money was transferred to the given bank account," Thakeng said. When the matter was reported to the police, a case of extortion was registered and assigned to the provincial Anti Corruption Unit, which led to the arrest of Seleke on 16 August, said Thakeng. Seleke, who is attached to the Thabong Visible Policing Unit, appeared in the Welkom Magistrate's Court on Wednesday (last week) on a charge of extortion. He was granted R1 000 bail and is set to appear in court on 31 August. Thakeng said the constable was part of a syndicate operating in the area, in which information was sourced about the victims and they were then followed around; after which, the extortion demand took place. Thakeng said: “Often, they would have information about you. They are normally aware that you have that kind of money and then they target you. This is part of our investigations, where it appears as if there may be a syndicate, and we are following up on leads.” media@veldbrandmediasa.co.za

Teachers’ union South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) in Bloemfontein has urged the Free State Department of Education to intensify efforts to improve infrastructure in schools if it wants to have quality education. The union said this during the Education Department’s lekgotla on school infrastructure in Bloemfontein. The Infrastructure Lekgotla was aimed at developing the department’s strategic infrastructure plan for the next five years. Some of the pressing issues on the programme included upgrading sanitation facilities building schools that are equipped with ICT facilities and capabilities as well as the building of 52 technical schools in the province. SADTU’s regional chairperson Nthabiseng Phalole says the infrastructure at schools needs to be urgently attended to. “We are saying that this infrastructure sometimes gives us challenges when it comes to educating. For example, a hungry child cannot learn; a cold child cannot learn, so we really propose that they must make a plan with the infrastructure in our schools.”

Authorities say 55 000 head of cattle have been vaccinated in the Free State in a bid to curb the spread of foot and mouth disease. This is in addition to last week’s Tuesday’s announcement by Agriculture Minister Thoko Didiza of a 21 day suspension of all cattle movement in the country which is also aimed at halting the spread of the disease. Following an urgent meeting between Minister Didiza and Premier Sisi Ntombela in Bloemfontein, plans are now under way to set up roadblocks in affected parts of the province to decontaminate vehicles that are used to ferry cattle and feedlot. The province has outbreaks at 22 farms. They are in Viljoenskroon, Marquard, and Bethlehem. Cattle on the affected farms have been quarantined and vaccinated. Minister Didiza says, “There will be an immediate setting up of roadblocks around that area of Marquard so that we zoom in and decontaminate every vehicle that passes through Marquard because we may not know whether it is carrying an infection in itself. We also want to urge all farmers to make sure that they clean properly clean the vehicle that they move with animals be it with cattle or feed. So that we try as best as possible to improve our biosecurity. So that other forms of spread don’t happen as a result of the vehicles that we move animals or feed which might be contaminated.”

Stakeholders at the Infrastructure Lekgotla have expressed the importance of galvanising communities to safeguard school infrastructure.

“Today (Aug 18/22) we are getting the support that is empowering us in terms of how to take care of the school buildings and take care of the infrastructure, as well as the information to train our own communities,” says Vani. The Infrastructure Lekgotla has also agreed to work with the private sector to help upskill learners. Head of Programmes at Kagiso Trust Angelina Mdakane says collaboration with the private sector will also help speed up the process of improving school infrastructure. “We have a lot on our plate, but I think through partnerships this is realisable. All the department needs to do is to work with partners such as Kagiso Trust and KST and discuss how we can make this [fixing school infrastructure] a reality.” (SABC News/ 20 August 2022) media@veldbrandmediasa.co.za

BOSTON CITY CAMPUS: Various careers in accounting –

BOSTON CITY CAMPUS | Veldbrand | 11LOCAL. USEFUL. DIGITAL COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER

Natasha Sewpersadh, graduate of Boston City Campus in Welkom, is thrilled that she chose Boston as her campus, to further her studies and career. Natasha is happy in her chosen career, and explained why she chose to work in Accounting: She says: “Actually, I always enjoyed numbers, and it is something that I am passionate about”. This makes complete sense to the staff at Boston, as we have always seen that those who follow their passion and select a career that involves their passion, are way more likely to succeed, and to succeed as well! Today Natasha works at Ablon Construction, where she has recently started doing payroll. This is a position that demands integrity and confidentiality, as do most accounting positions. However, if you ask Natasha what her job entails she responds “working with numbers and problem solving”, she does see everything very clearly. It’s so refreshing to chat with someone who is happy at her place of work and happy in her job. What does she enjoy the most? The fact that “I am able to put the skills I have acquired through my studies at Boston City Campus to good use”. However, it’s not all a bed of roses, Natasha does lament the fact she feels she does not have enough time to study. It’s a huge advantage having your coursework online, and being able to study anyplace and anytime, but you still do need enough hours in the day to make sure the studies get enough attention. Luckily the Boston lecturers are available via email or video call if any academic queries arise. Natasha describes an average day for us, to give us a fuller picture, and show how truly dedicated she is to all her responsibilities: “An average day would be where I would study from 5am to 6am,prepare and come into the office where I would make sure the time transactions for the previous and current day are in order, close from work at 4:30pm, get home at 5h00…relax and do a few household chores, check my phone and got to bed around 10pm.” 1. Natasha says that in all accounting jobs, there are 3 essential qualities that a person must have. These are 1.) attention to detail; 2.) focus and 3.) problem solving skills. Her job is simple, yet very demanding. What does she feel about experience versus training? For her, experience is the best teacher. So how can we use Natasha’s advice to recommend careers to others? Again, Natasha has clarity: the job you should choose? “Anything that a person has both skill and passion for.” When discussing accounting type careers specifically, Natasha says that “I believe every career requires different personalities but at the same time every person must be driven, motivated and dedicated to succeed in their respective field of choice.” Her biggest challenge as she mentioned above is finding enough time. “Time management it has been a major adjustment for me to it in a full time job with my studies that requires time and dedication.” To grade 11’s and grade 12’s that are investigating career options, she says: “Choose wisely, it will save you a lot of time and effort”. As with most careers, continuing education and gaining new skills helps you progress in accounting. That’s why while time is short when you work full time, having an institution like Boston that is customer focused, available to assist with all queries, and motivating you to complete assessments and exams, is such a bonus for the Welkom community. What was Natasha’s experience like as a Boston Student? “Amazing, I have to commend Boston Welkom on their friendly, helpful and courteous staff. I would choose them over and over again.”

To eliminate fears, negativity, misconceptions, inaccurate information that prevents one from becoming an organ and tissue donor. Organ Donation in South Africa is misconceived; hence the conversation and action are avoided amongst many. Organ Donation has saved many lives, globally. For some, an organ transplant is their only hope to continue living. There is a dire shortage of available organs. With so many people awaiting life saving transplants, the ODF urges more people to register as organ donors. The sad reality is the need for lifesaving organ transplants is increasing much faster than the organs are becoming available. By becoming an organ and tissue donor, a person has the potential to save up to 50 lives when they die. One often wonders, can one donate organs while alive and the answer is yes because one can donate either a kidney or a part of their liver while they are alive. This will make the donor a living donor. The recipient and the donor will have to be the same blood group and tissue match. However, this is a personal choice. It is encouraged that people consider donating their organs when they die. This way, when your life comes to an end, you can help others to continue living theirs. Becoming a donor is easy. Anyone is eligible to become an organ and tissue donor. All medical tests are done to see if you are eligible to be a donor are done at the time of your death. There is no age limit. Being an organ/tissue donor is a selfless act of kindness. Donations cost absolutely nothing, no financial compensation is received by the donor or their family. Trading or selling of organs and tissue is illegal. Here is how you can become an organ donor: Firstly, register online at www.odf.org.za or call the Organ Donor Foundation’s on toll free number 0800 22 66 11. It’s important to inform your family and make it known to them to honour your wishes. The most important part of organ and tissue donation is that you undertake to make it known: Ensure you have the conversation with your family, colleagues and your friends. The only way we can save those on the waiting list is to raise awareness

Klitsgrason:

15 ml olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped 4 cloves garlic, sliced 15 ml tomato paste

Method

375 ml water 50 g (1 sachet) Knorr Chakalaka Soup 3 cups cooked chicken, shredded the juice of 1 lemon

Lemon water is rich in sugars, vitamin C, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, niacin, and minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, and iron. Drinking some lemon water every day can supplement the nutrients the body needs New research also found that drinking lemon water can prevent the formation of kidney stones, which is very beneficial to kidney health. After the minerals in the urine crystallize and accumulate inside the kidneys, kidney stones can occur. Meanwhile, BAIC also has considerable off road vehicle experience the company has, inter alia, engineered its own military off roader In the most recent instalment of the gruelling Dakar Rally, BAIC fielded 3 entries, which completed the event in 13th, 14th, and 15th places overall The B40 Plus adds an off roader component to BAIC’s local line up; an updated model and bigger B80 are due in 2022

There are two engines on offer A 2 0 litre turbopetrol engine punches out 160 kW/320 Nm and is paired with a 6 speed automatic, while the 2 0 litre turbodiesel produces peak outputs of 110 kW and 350 Nm of torque in combination with a 6 speed manual gearbox The newcomer’s off road credentials are decent on paper, with a ground clearance of 210 mm, an approach angle of 37 degrees, a departure angle of 31 degrees and a breakover angle of 23 degrees BAIC claims its B40 Plus has been put through the wringer; the model has undergone in excess of 7 500 km of off road testing, the firm says The cabin architecture looks upmarket at first glance and, upon closer inspection, instantly familiar Based on what we can see, the Mercedes Benz/BAIC joint venture makes allowances for components of the Three pointed Star to be implemented directly in the Chinese product

BAIC B40 Plus possibilitiesbrings

The start button appears to have been lifted from the E Class, while the air vents look sourced from Benz’s compact car range There are 5 derivatives on offer in 3 levels of trim: B40 Plus, B40 Plus City Hunter, B40 Plus Champion At this price point, the list of standard features is acceptable and the mid spec City Hunter seems to offer the best value for money in the range There are some fun colour choices too; the Military Green and Sky Blue hues are especially likely to grab people’s attention! What is it like to drive? Our choice of vehicle was the BAIC B40 Plus City Hunter (petrol automatic) Having experienced the technical layout of the ADA before in a Suzuki Jimny we were not keen to have to deal with the additional complexity of low range driving with a manual ‘box! Good thing we opted for the petrol auto, as some of our peers suggested the diesel engine suffered from a touch of turbo lag That petrol engine is impressive and, during our very short on road assessment (about 20 km), it felt eager and responsive The transmission shifted smoothly too, but we noted the instant fuel consumption numbers fluctuated wildly depending on throttle application, with numbers popping into the late teens on 75% throttle applications Will the B40 Plus suffer the same ailment as some of the Chinese vehicles in our market in that it’s notably thirstier than its European counterparts? Perhaps, but given Chinese brands’ rapid progress, they’ll soon use powertrains that will rival the best legacy brands can produce As far as ride and handling go, again, our on road evaluation was very brief, but by virtue of being underpinned by a ladder frame chassis, the B40 Plus cannot be expected to deliver the same levels of composure and refinement as off road capable unibody products such as the Subaru Forester Still, the BAIC should be much more capable when the tarmac ends As the Toyota Fortuner and other bakkie based SUVs have shown, a ladder frame is what you want for serious off roading capability The cabin was reasonably damped, but the chunky off road tyres generated quite a bit of road noise Off road, the BAIC B40 Plus performed acceptably We couldn’t see a button for a differential lock and assumed the vehicle didn’t come with it, but the spec sheets suggest the vehicle has this feature and it’ll come into play automatically We had a few moments where the BAIC got stuck with one wheel spinning in the air, only to free itself with a lurch as the car’s electronics shuffled the power about and the diff lock engaged The ground clearance, fair approach/departure angles and 4H will keep you going in most tricky situations, while 4L should keep the B40 Plus moving in treacherous sand and Impressively, mud we also had a go in the pre production homologation unit that had tallied up over 10 000 km across the Republic on a variety of surfaces; it still felt solid with minimal rattles and squeaks How much does the new BAIC B40 Plus cost in South Africa? The new BAIC B40 Plus range starts from R549 500 and goes up to R629 500 for the top of the range derivative The newcomer is sold with a 5 year/120 000 km warranty and the brand says “competitive service plan options are available ” Service intervals are 15 000 km/12 months for both the turbopetrol and diesel derivatives

| Veldbrand |LOCAL. USEFUL. DIGITAL COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER 6 was founded in 1958 and it has produced vehicles for private and commercial uses (including buses)? It’s one of the top 5 automobile manufacturing groups in China and has joint venture agreements and shared factories with Mercedes Benz and Hyundai Interestingly, BAIC is a state owned company, with Beijing Municipality Government holding the reins Within the South African context, BAIC has been assembling D20 hatchback and sedans and X25 crossovers from semi knocked down (SKD) kits in Gqeberha since July 2018 SKD means the parts are all pre manufactured (in China) and then the vehicles’ final assembly takes place in South Africa BAIC’s Eastern Cape production facility is said to have a claimed annual capacity of 50 000 vehicles

What’s on offer? While BAIC describes the newcomer’s styling as “bold and unapologetic”, there’s no denying the B40 Plus takes a lot of inspiration from the Jeep Wrangler, right down to the detachable roof mechanism It may not have the trademark Jeep grille or round headlights, but judging by some social media reaction to the new BAIC, the Chinese and American models “could have been separated at birth” Let’s not even talk about the B80 which bears a striking resemblance to the ‘Benz G Class Perhaps the joint venture between BAIC and its Stuttgart based partner allows for some sharing of design elements?

Verdict Our first taste of the BAIC B40 Plus was brief, but consider our interest piqued With the prices of other off roaders reaching astronomical heights (Jeep Wranglers start at R750k these days), the Chinese newcomer appears to offer strong value and is more off road capable than you might think The cabin is modern and has some nice looking fittings, but we do wish there was some form of connectivity like Apple CarPlay/Android Auto on offer There’ll be a slightly facelifted version touching down in 2022 and that will likely come with a few more features, as well as an 8 speed automatic transmission to life…

Mama Jack eMovies on SATURDAY at 06:10 PM 13VL Comedy Mama Jack is a 2005 comedy film by Leon Schuster. It was directed by Gray Hofmeyr and distributed by Nu Metro. It is one of Leon Schuster's most successful films. Set in Cape Town, Mama Jack is the story of Jack Theron, an ordinary person working on a film set as a grip. However, his movie producer boss, John Daragon, hates him and wants to remove him from the production of the movie they are producing about Nelson Mandela, Sweet Bird of Freedom. In a bid to get rid of Jack, the producer spikes his drink with a fictitious drug, Mama Africa, at a glamorous function, and before long Jack has unwittingly offended all the attending dignitaries, ruined the function and got himself on the wrong side of the law while hallucinating. While on the run, Jack turns to his friend and house mate, Shorty, who is a make up artist who turns him into "Mama Bolo". Mama Bolo soon finds “herself” employed by the producer's fiancée, Angela, and begins to fall in love with her. A series of deceptions and misunderstandings pile up and comic mayhem ensues with Jack Theron becoming another character, Doctor Donald, a tramp from Scotland.
