Die boer wys na die eerste een. "This one looks good." "No, that one over there looks much better to me," sê die Engelsman. Die Boer sê: "No, that one looks better."

BETHLEHEM | CORNÉ VAN NOORDWYK Four Bengal tigers rescued from years of captivity in a train carriage in Argentina have recently been released into the Big Cat Sanctuary, situated on the premises of the Lions Rock Lodge, just outside Bethlehem. After a journey of more than 70 hours from Argentina, the tigers stepped from their crates into open-air enclosures onto pure Eastern Free State soil. Visibly curious about their new homes, the tigers quickly surveyed the boundaries of their fenced-in areas, about 80-square meters (yards) in size, and chowed on chunks of meat put out as a welcome treat. The tigers' arrival in South Africa on Saturday 12 March 2022, was the culmination of years of planning by the international animal welfare organization Four Paws, said Dr. Amir Khalil, mission leader and veterinarian. “I was more excited than the tigers," he said, adding that it was expected the cats would be reluctant to leave their containers. “But they got out immediately. They wanted to discover the place, to smell the grass, to taste it.” He said the tigers' activity showed they intend “to defend, to secure a new place. So they need some time now to calm down, and they still have a long way to learn about the area and the new territory.” The tigers are currently kept as pairs in two separate enclosures, a plan that appears to have gone smoothly so far. and months, the tigers will be monitored and get any necessary veterinary care, he said. “We will start coming here often and feeding them, getting them used to all our staff and our caretakers so that they learn to know what is our routine and when they start relaxing," he said. The next step will be to release the tigers to bigger enclosures that are several acres large, said Hildegard Pirker, manager of the Lionsrock sanctuary, where more than 100 lions, leopard’s tigers and a cheetah are living. All the enclosures include open grassland with bushes and trees and protected natural areas where the animals can rest and shelter from the elements, according to Lionsrock. The enclosures are circular in shape and follow the natural shape of the land so that the cats do not feel they are in a corner. The animals have been rescued from circuses, zoos, the entertainment industry and private captivity from all over the world including Austria, Bulgaria, Congo, France, Gaza, Germany, Iraq, Jordan, Romania, Serbia, South Africa, Switzerland, Syria, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Four Paws has established the Lionsrock reserve in South Africa for the big cats and visitors can come to see the animals in their new environments.

The police in Bethlehem made a breakthrough in its investigation into gate motor theft in town on Monday night, 7 March. The South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring said there has been an outcry in Bethlehem where more than 10 incidents of such theft have been reported in one area. On Monday between 2:00 and 5:00 – two suspects were arrested after being caught in possession of gate motors. “The recent arrest of the two suspects is a major

breakthrough because it could see a decline in theft of gate motors from various suburbs,” said the police spokesperson.

The suspects, both aged in their 30’s, appeared before the Bethlehem Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 9 March on charges of possession of suspected stolen property. “The Bethlehem Detective Service requests that all complainants, whose gate motors were stolen, should visit the station urgently to assist in the identification of their gate motors,” said Mophiring.

Bekende boer gaan skuld op klag ontken PAUL ROUX | CORNÉ VAN NOORDWYK

‘n Oos-Vrystaatse boer wat na bewering ’n plaaswerker aangerand het, gaan skuld op die aanklag ontken.

Die welbekende boer van die Paul Roux distrik word daarvan beskuldig dat hy ’n plaaswerker in Januarie met ’n ysterstaaf aangerand het. Hoewel die voorval tussen die boer en die werker, glo al op 3 Januarie plaasgevind het, is nuus van die voorval eers onlangs bekend gemaak in ’n mediaverklaring wat die rondte begin doen het.

In die verklaring beweer die klaer dat sy arm gebreek is toe die boer hom na bewering sonder rede met ’n ysterstaaf oor die kop wou slaan en hy gekeer het. Die boer se prokureur, het gister met sy kliënt vergader en daarna geskrewe terugvoer aan die media gestuur waarin hy sê: “Ná konsultasie met my kliënt en in terme van die instruksies sal ons kliënt skuld ontken in die saak indien met vervolging voortgegaan word in die Paul

Roux-distrikshof. “Die polisie ondersoek die saak en sy kliënt glo dat die polisie-ondersoek behoorlike lig sal werp op die aangeleentheid.” Hulle het ook bekend gemaak dat sy kliënt van die begin af sy volkome samewerking gegee het. Anders as wat elders berig is, is die boer wat aangekla is nie in hegtenis geneem op die dag van die voorval nie. Die polisie het ook aan die media bevestig dat die boer wat aangekla is nooit aangehou is nie. Hy was blykbaar covid-19-positief toe die saak aangemeld is. Dis onduidelik presies wanneer die klaer die polisie gekontak het, maar die boer het die saak op 12 Januarie by die polisiekantoor op Paul Roux gaan aanmeld toe hy nie meer in kwarantyn was weens covid19 nie. Hy is blykbaar dieselfde dag huis toe gestuur. Die saak het op 9 Februarie voorgekom en is toe uitgestel tot 13 April. – newsroom@rekordmediafs.co.za

Diestal van mielies besig om hand uit te ruk VRYSTAAT | CORNÉ VAN NOORDWYK

Minstens agt boerderygemeenskappe in die Vrystaat het onder die diefstal van hulle mielie oes deurgeloop, 'n kommoditeit wat al hoe meer gewilder geraak het in diestalkringe. Nie net plaas dit boere in gevaar nie, omrede die misdadigers baie dikwels gewapen is, maar het Vrystaat Landbou (VL) onthul dat sommige boere elke maand tot R100 000 moet opdok vir veiligheidswagte om hul plantasies te beskerm. Dr Jane Buys, veiligheidsrisikoontleder van VL, het in 'n verklaring gesê bykomende sekuriteitskoste, tesame met verhoogde insetkoste, kan voedselsekerheid in gevaar stel.

Die VL het boerderygemeenskappe gewaarsku om op die uitkyk te wees vir die toenemende misdaadtendens, met die voorsitter van die landelike veiligheidskomitee, Jakkals le Roux, wat sê misdadigers werk dikwels in groot groepe saam, amper soos ‘n sindikaat.

Die gesteelde mielies word dan in stedelike gemeenskappe of woonbuurte verkoop.

“Inligting dui daarop dat tot 20 mense, gewapen met pangas en messe, op mielie plantasies toesak en mielies van lande stroop. Die mielies word in sakke geplaas vir bakkies om later na verkoopsgebiede

vervoer te word.” Dít, het le Roux gesê, kan tot “enorme finansiële verliese” lei. Alhoewel dit nie 'n nuwe misdaad is nie, het mieliediefstal oor die jare 'n seisoenale georganiseerde misdaadsindikaat van ernstige kommer geword. In 2019 het ’n mediabron berig dat tot drie ton mielies daagliks in sommige dele van die Vrystaat gesteel word, wat boere miljoene rande gekos.

Die VL berig die boerderygemeenskappe Allanridge, Bothaville, Bultfontein, Koppies, Odendaalsrus, Vierfontein, Virginia en Welkom is die ergste getref. Enkele gevalle is ook in Bethlehem aangemeld “Mieliediefstal soos dit in die Vrystaat voorkom, is 'n hoogs georganiseerde misdaad wat deur groepe en sindikate bestuur word,” het le Roux voortgegaan. “Dit is nie net ’n misdaad waar mense wat honger is per geleentheid mielies onwettig van lande af neem nie. Afsetpunte, markte en geld wat wissel in handel is hier ter sprake.” Die vereniging het die polisie dringend versoek om mieliediefstal met “die nodige erns” op te neem. newsroom@rekordmediafs.co.za

Two suspects arrested for selling dagga in Fouriesburg FOURIESBURG | SAPS MEDIA STATEMENT

The Welkom Public Order Police Task Team Unit have arrested two suspects for allegedly dealing in dagga in Mashaeng Township. On Sunday, 13 March 2022 at approximately 14:00 the Welkom Public Order Police Task Team currently deployed at Mashaeng near Fouriesburg received information from member of the community during Ministerial Imbizo that was held at Mashaeng Stadium with regard to people selling drugs in the area. The team made follow up and identified two places and successfully managed to arrest two suspects aged 62 and 24 with dagga and cash. The two suspects appeared before the Fouriesburg Magistrate court on Tuesday, 15 March and faced charges of dealing in dagga.

Ek persoonlik ken nie (volgens my) regtig swaarkry nie, hoewel daar ook al uitdagings in my lewe was, maar dit kan hoegenaamd nie vergelyk word met die swaar van ander mense in hierdie wêreld nie. In globale terme is ek seker skatryk net omdat ek 'n huis en motors besit. Daar is egter 'n ander element van swaarkry wat veel erger is, en dis mense wat deur trauma of ander emosionele uitdagings gaan. In Viktor Frankl se boek "Man's search for meaning", skryf hy dat die mens enigiets kan verduur as hy net sou weet wat die betekenis van daardie swaarkry is, en voorts ook as jy weet dat dit iewers weer beter sal gaan. Ek weet egter een ding, en dit is dat dit makliker is as jy nié alleen daardie pad stap nie. In die Bybel word daar oorweldigend baie geskryf oor mense wat bitter swaargekry het. Ek dink aan Paulus wat 'n paar keer amper doodgemartel is, ek dink aan die Israeliete in die woestyn, Job wat alles verloor het, die dissipels wat vir hulle geloof gesterf het, Johannes die Doper wie se kop afgekap is, en dan natuurlik Jesus se wrede kruisdood. Miskien het hulle nie almal enige betekenis in daardie swaarkry gesien nie, maar ek en jy sien die betekenis in hulle swaarkry. Voorts was die Here altyd daar vir hulle, net soos wat hy daar is vir jou en my. I don’t want to scare you with these horror-figures, but you might already know this by now. Increases in the price of fuel have taken petrol inland to over R21 a liter – a 60-litre tank now costs over R1, 200 to fill. With the war on Ukraine sending the prices of oil, gas and coal spiking, the impacts here are already being felt. Economists predict another huge petrol price increase in April and South Africa’s reliance on open cycle gas turbines for emergency power is a major risk. With an energy

The electricity utility had 17 units at risk, it announced earlier, and load shedding was extended to who knows when. An Eskom representative said at a briefing that the utility could soon reach a point where it can no longer afford to pay for the emergency diesel which keeps the turbines going, another media source reported. Energy regulator Nersa has approved a 9.61% increase to Eskom from 1 April, but it had applied for a 20.5% increase. Eskom’s debt stands at R390-billion and is only due for restructuring by 2024. Municipalities add an additional surcharge (although they pay a slightly lower tariff for bulk purchases), which means that, come July, households already buckling will pay an energy tariff that is double the current inflation rate.

The SA Reserve Bank has indicated that it will increase

interest rates to offset inflationary pressures, but this could push many households to the brink.

Directions: Heat the oil in a large wide heavy pot over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until they start to brown, 10 to 15 minutes. Simmer until the chicken is cooked through, about 30 minutes. Add additional seasoning, if necessary. Dig out the center of each bread loaf half in one piece, reserving the "plug".

Spoon the curry into the hollow of each loaf half and place the plug on top. Serve with carrot salad. Using your hands, break off some of the bread and use it to scoop up some curry and the carrot salad.

TB Awareness Month 2022 01 to 31 March

Tuberculosis (TB) causes thousands of deaths every year in South Africa and the rest of the world. Facts about TB: Tuberculosis (TB) is second only to HIV/AIDS as the greatest killer worldwide due to a single infectious agent. In 2012, 8.6 million people fell ill with TB and 1.3 million died from TB. Over 95% of TB deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, and it is among the top three causes of death for women aged 15 to 44.

In 2012, an estimated 530 000 children became ill with TB and 74 000 HIVnegative children died of TB. TB is a

leading killer of people living with HIV causing one-fifth of all deaths. Multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB) is present in virtually all countries surveyed. The estimated number of people falling ill with tuberculosis each year is declining, although very slowly, which means that the world is on track to achieve the Millennium Development Goal to reverse the spread of TB by 2015. The TB death rate dropped 45% between 1990 and 2012. An estimated 22 million lives saved through the use of DOTS and the Stop TB Strategy recommended by WHO.

Background: TB Day on 24 March commemorates the day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch astounded the scientific community by announcing that he had discovered the cause of tuberculosis, the TB bacillus. At the time of Koch's announcement in Berlin, TB was raging through Europe and the Americas, causing the death of one out of every seven people. GREY HERON | ARDEA CINEREA The grey heron is a tall bird, standing around 1 m tall, but a real lightweight for its size, weighing in at between 1 and 2 kg’s. The grey heron is grey on its back and wings, with a “dirty” white underside.

The head is white with a black supercilium (eyebrow), with a black crest. The grey heron has dull brown legs and a yellow bill. The grey heron feeds on mainly on fish, but will feed on small mammals, insects, molluscs and juvenile birds. Small fish are swallowed head first. Larger prey is first killed on shore before being consumed. Small mammals and birds are often drowned by the heron, before being swallowed whole. During breeding, the grey heron's bill becomes bright orange and the legs become a pink to red colour.

The heron is monogamous and will breed in colonies known as heronries. The same nest is used year after year. Three to five eggs are laid and incubated for around 25 days by both parents. The chicks fledge at around 7 to 8 weeks. The grey heron has a slow and regular flight, with the long neck pulled back in a snake-like “S” shape. They are known for their ability to stand motionless for extended periods when hunting. The grey heron is active both diurnal and nocturnally. The grey heron is found throughout South Africa, except arid regions. They are found in shallow bodies of water including coastal lagoons and estuaries.
