BETHLEHEM: Die stof het nou gaan lê en tientalle matrieks van die dorp se skoolloobaan is nou iets van die verlede. Sommige matrieks het uitmuntende prestasies behaal, pryse ontvang en sekerlik dit behoorlik gevier saam met ouers, familie en vriende! Agter die skerms was daar ‘n paar individue wat gewerkskaf het dat die sop spat, om seker te maak alle vakke en leerders presteer goed. Hierdié selfde onderwysers is weer terug in 2021 om die sirkel net weer te voltooi tot die beste van hulle vermoeë. Vier sulke onderwysers het Bethlehem en sy skole behoorlik laat trots voel. Twee van Bethlehem se skole het elkeen twee onderwysers wat toekenings tydens 2020 se matriek eksamen ontvang het. Die Wiskunde Departement van Voortrekker Hoërskool se Juffrou Elna de Waal en Juffrou Charlene Muller is beloon as topppresterende onderwysers in die Vrystaat vir hulle puik Wiskunde-uitslae tydens die afgelope matriek-
eksamen. Hulle het elkeen ‘n individuele sertifikaat daarvoor ontvang. As komprehensiewe skool bied Voortrekker Wiskunde, Tegniese Wiskunde (deel van Tegniese kwalifikasie) en Wiskundige geletterdheid aan en is ongelooflik trots op Muller en de Waal se prestasie en harde werk gedurende 2020. Hoërskool Witteberg het nie nodig gehad om een tree terug te staan vir enige ander skool nie. Vir die tweede agtereenvolgende jaar is Witteberg aangewys as die top Wiskunde en Fisiese Wetenskap skool in die Vrystaat. Hierdié eer kom Witteberg al drie jaar toe. Selbie Swart van Witteberg het ‘n toekening vir die nommer een skool in Fisiese Wetenskap ontvang en AnneMarie de Jongh vir die nommer een Wiskunde skool. Baie geluk aan al vier van julle met hierdie puik prestasie en julle harde werk gedurende 2020. Die goeie uitslae van beide die skole kan grootliks daaraan toegeskryf word. Ons is baie trots op julle en ons skole.
Twee inwoners help gestrande motoriste op dodelike R26 BETHLEHEM: Selde hoor mens ‘n storie wat jou sommer trots maak op die mensdom? ‘n Anonieme drywer was een aand laat op die R26 tussen Bethlehem en Fouriesburg, toe hy deur ‘n enorme slaggat gery het met sy motor en ‘n band gebars het. Die insident het sowat 15km voor Fouriesburg plaasgevind. Attie Barnard van Quantum Auto-Onderdele het daardie tyd van die nag tot sy
redding gekom omrede hy nie die nodige toerusting by hom gehad het om die beskadigde band te vervang nie. Attie het saam met sy vriend Gerhard daar aangekom nadat hulle ‘n regstreekse-video op sosiale media omstreeks 20:00 gesien het van die drywer wat langs die pad staan en sy situasie met sy vriende gedeel het. Town councillors and municipality ensuring the safety of our children
BETHLEHEM: The safety of learners in front of Witteberg High School in Plein Street has always been a concern when traffic reaches its peak at closing time of the school between 13:40 and 14:20. Someone said: “It’s a tragedy waiting to happen! Learners are struggling to cross the street in the peak-traffic.” Then, councillors Willie Theunissen and Eric Motloung asked the Metro Police to be present and requested the Dihlabeng Local Municipality to conduct a project where the zebracrossing and roads should get repainted. They also requested the reparation of the traffic lights close to the High School which was constantly out of order, which caused even more safety
hazards to learners. Shortly after their request the Dihlabeng Local Municipality send out a team of construction workers and repainted road signs and started the process of repairing the traffic light. They thanked the Director of Community Services, Angela Mosima, for assisting and realizing the seriousness of the situation. They further requested parents and road users using the road in front of Witteberg High school, to respect the traffic laws and ensuring the safety of learners. The area and situation will constantly be monitored and they will continue with its oversightrole to ensure the safety of all learners in the Dihlabeng Local Municipality.

Hydro project comes alive in Dihlabeng Local Municipality CLARENS: Power project developer Red Rocket has announced (Thursday, 4 March 2021) the start of commercial operations at the 4 MW Kruisvallei hydropower plant, along the Ash river between Clarens and Bethlehem, here in the Free State. The completion of the plant comes almost two years since construction began on March 26, 2019. Kruisvallei was the third hydropower project to be procured under South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme and was awarded under Bid Window 4. Uniquely, the plant is split into two run-ofriver hydropower plants that combine to supply 4 MW of hydroelectric power through two turbines that will generate about 24 GWh/y. The Ash river flows vary from about 15 m3/s to 40 m3/s depending on the release schedule from the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. It is estimated that about one-billion cubic meters of water will flow through each turbine every year. Red Rocket undertook the engineering, procurement, and construction of the plant, while Red Rocket Asset Management will be responsible for operations and management. This is the first project within Red Rocket’s
greater portfolio which was undertaken using the group’s fully-integrated business model. Red Rocket will therefore participate in the full lifecycle of the project from development, design, and construction to operation and maintenance. “Building and operating a project of this nature closes the first of many circles for us as a fullyintegrated IPP and we celebrate the completion of Kruisvallei, as an example of our capabilities and what we can bring to the market in the future,” says CEO Matteo Brambilla. The total project investment was about R370million, of which R235-million was provided by a specialized debt fund called Facility for Investments in Renewable Small Transactions, which was established to provide simple, accessible, and efficient funding for renewable energy projects in South Africa. H1 Holdings, which participates as a 46.5% shareholder through the project company, namely Zevobuzz, also sees a growth in its portfolio through the completion of this project; making the project an authentic vehicle for empowerment through the power sector in South Africa. Die dodelike pad beskadig gemiddeld 90 motors per week, maar die provinsiale regering blyk om hulle koppe weg te draai vir die probleem. Nadat Attie en Gerhard die motoris uit sy situasie gered het, het hulle voortgegaan om ander motoriste te help wat ook langs die pad met pap bande gestaan het. Attie het gesê: “Ons het op 7 motors afgekom en 3 het ons hulp
benodig. Ons het hulle toe gehelp.” Daar vind ook gereeld noodlottige ongelukke op die R26 plaas as gevolg van die slaggat-probleem. “Ons moet net saam staan en druk op die regering plaas om iets omtrent hierdié probleem en die pad te doen!” het Attie ook gesê. Attie en Gerhard se heldedaad is ook op sosiale media gedeel en hulle is bedank vir die goeie gebaar. Attie en Gerhard het eers die volgende oggend 1-uur veilig by hulle huis aangekom.

Skool spog met nuwe prefekte BETHLEHEM: Verskeie jong leerlinge van die Laerskool Truida Kestell is onlangs aangewys as die nuwe groep snoepieprefekte vir 2021 (1ste twee rye foto’s). Die nuwe rekenaarsprefekte is ook deur
die skool aangewys. Die vier leerders verskyn op die onderste ry foto’s. Baie geluk met hierdie prestasie en sterkte met elkeen van julle se taak waarmee julle nou aangestel is voor.
Bekende in Netbal-kringe kom deel kennis met plaaslike Netbal afrigters BETHLEHEM: Primêre Skool Jordania se netbal-afrigters het die afgelope naweek hul vaardighede opgeskerp met ‘n Netbalkursus wat deur die bekende ikoon van Netbal aangebied is, Jenni-Lee Delport. Sy is ‘n provinsiale en professionele Netbal afrigter van Pretoria en is betrokke by Hoërskool Menlopark. Sy het haar kennis en vaardighede met die dames kom deel. Een van die afrigters was baie opgewonde na die opleiding en het gesê: “Ons het baie geleer vandag en ons sien uit daarna om al hierdie nuwe kennis met ons dogters te deel.” Delport het ondermeer tydens haar werkswinkel die dames touwys gemaak met vaardighede soos die fokus op ratsheid,
balans en koördinasie, basiese aanvallende vaardighede, basiese verdedigingsvaardighede, hoe om korrekte skiet tegnieke aan te leer, land en draai, vang en verbygaan, oefeninge om basiese vaardighede te verbeter en speletjies om basiese vaardighede te verbeter. Die dames het ook opleiding ontvang in gevorderde aanvals-, verdedigings-, oefeninge vir vaardigheid, balans en koördinasie en korrekte opwarmingstegnieke. Nou kan die dames met gemoedsrus hulle vaardighede met hulle meisies deel. Die skool wil ook graag dankie sê aan Birch Bush Gastehuis vir die borg van Jenni-Lee se verblyf en vervoer.

Die Here soek na Adam en Eva, nie omdat Hy nie weet waar hulle is nie, maar omdat Hy weet dat hulle vir Hom wegkruip en Hom vermy en Hom eintlik nodig het om hulle te help. As die Here vandag vir jou vra: Waar is jy? Waar gaan Hy jou kry? Êrens op jou eie pad? Alleen en verlate? Op plekke waar jy nie veronderstel is om te wees nie, waar niemand anders mag weet waar jy is nie? Besig met verkeerde dinge? Of gaan Hy jou vind besig om jou medemens te help, soos die barmhartige Samaritaan, of besig met jou eerlike dagtaak soos die vissermanne langs die See van Galilea, besig om jou gesin te versorg soos Marta, besig om Sy Woord en liefde te deel soos Petrus? Of gaan Hy jou dalk vind langs die sterfbed van ’n geliefde, soos Lasarus se familie, of op jou siekbed in afwagting vir ’n wonderwerk, soos die man by die bad van Bethesda, of uitgewerp soos die besetene in Kapernaum? Leek and Butternut Crustless Quiche Ingredients 1 small butternut, peeled and cubed 4 Leeks, cleaned and sliced thinly 1 onion, finely chopped 2 Cloves of garlic, finely chopped 20 ml butter 30 ml Olive oil 5 ml Mustard Powder Salt and Pepper to season 500 ml Grated Cheese 2 Eggs 250 ml Milk 50 ml Flour 5 ml Baking Powder METHOD Preheat oven to 180C. Toss butternut in half of the olive oil, season and roast for 25 minutes or until soft and slightly charred around the edges. In a medium frying pan, place the oil, butter, mustard powder, leeks and onions. Cook on medium heat for 5
minutes, 5 Minutes cover and cook for another 8 to 10 minutes until soft and translucent. 8 Minutes Place butternut and leeks in the base of a 26cm quiche tin and distribute evenly. In a medium bowl, mix milk, eggs, flour and baking powder and mix well. Pour milk mixture over Butternut and Leeks and tap tin to even out the liquid. Cover the quiche with cheese and bake for 30 to 40 minutes until golden brown and set in the middle (30 Minutes) Serve warm from the oven with crusty bread and a salad or chilled. Keeps for up to three days in the fridge

There have been 33 confirmed cases of rabies in animals since the beginning of the year, according to the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development. The department also reported that a 10-year-old boy from KwaZulu-Natal died from the virus. Rabies is a fatal viral disease that affects all mammals, and is transmissible from animals to humans. The virus is transmitted through the saliva of infected animals through licks, scratches and bites. Rabies occurs in domestic and wild animals across South Africa. People are encouraged not to touch or pick up unknown or stray animals, especially dogs and cats. South African law requires pet owners to vaccinate their cats and dogs against Rabies at 12 weeks, as well as a booster before 12 months. Thereafter, they should receive doses yearly or every third year depending on the specific vaccine manufacturer.

Sandwiched between two delicate shells the variety of buttercreams, fruit curds, preserves, and ganache’s is only limited by your imagination. The problem is that as with most unfamiliar fine French pastries, theses little dollops of heaven can be hellishly intimidating to make for the beginner baker. Grace Stevens, TV chef, cookbook author and confectionery extraordinaire shares her top 5 fantastic fixes to achieve a perfectly formed Macaron: Why Don’t my Macarons Have Feet? Getting that signature, even rise around the Macaron cookie is all down to how long you let your mixture rest. Much like the French themselves, French pastries takes finesse to get right, and trying to rush through them is futile. A well-rested Macaron will have developed a rubbery ‘skin’ that you can gently touch, and it will hold its shape. Depending on the weather this could take between 30 – 60 minutes.
Why are my Macarons Flat? First, says Grace, don’t panic. Your mixture is probably overmixed and a little thin. On your next attempt, when you are making your macaronage - gently fold less meringue to your almond mixture. To test that you have the right consistency, lift the batter on a spoon, if it flows off the spoon in a shiny, continuous ribbon the structure of your Macaron shell, in the end, should be perfect. Why are my Macarons so sticky? Nothing says the opposite of sophistication and elegance like sticky fingers. If your Macarons are still sticky, they are likely under baked. One secret to getting them delicate and dry is to leave them for a little longer in the oven at 110 C so that all the moisture escapes. Why are my Macarons Hollow? It is an intensely disappointing feeling to bite into your creation only for there to be nothing but empty space inside. Hollowness is governed in part by the heat of your oven. If your oven is too hot, the meringue will not set correctly. To avoid this, be sure to bake your Macarons for 10 minutes at 130C and then drop your temperature to 110C.
Oh No, My Macarons are Cracked! If your Macarons have cracked, chances are because your oven is too hot. Simply use a lower oven temperature of 130C and you should avoid any cavernous catastrophes. Grace also advises that by using an oven thermometer check that your oven is giving a true reading of the temperature and is not running hot. After making hundreds of Macarons, in countless flavours, Grace says that she has a particular and persistent fondness for granadilla flavoured Macarons using fresh granadillas from the vine in her garden. She says that she loves Macarons not only for their delicious taste but because of the reaction of awe and delight that sweeps through the room when she serves these undeniably ‘classy’ cookies. Macarons are the perfect morsels to spoil your loved ones with, just be sure to pack them carefully and tightly if you plan to travel to avoid your delicate work being demolished before they can be devoured.

The pumped up version of the A-Class is here and Alex Shahini gets to grips with the new GLA 200. A few decades ago the majority of passenger vehicles that filled the streets and transported families were sedans. Towards the end of the century, hatchbacks had asserted themselves as worthy adversaries and continued to increase in popularity in the ensuing years. Could it be that the compact SUV is under the same trajectory, one that will overthrow the beloved hatchback? Since the automotive world is constantly evolving, brands of all sizes conduct extensive market research to ensure they have the upper hand in new vehicle development. Things are no different with compact SUVs. They have become such a popular trend that consumers and brands have put their full focus into its development! Now, this is where the new Mercedes-Benz GLA comes into the picture, it fills the niche for young buyers that desire compact SUV characteristics while retaining the no compromise comfort and style synonymous with the brand. Our test car, the GLA 200 AMG Line delivered on both accounts, with exterior styling imparting a more aggressive look than its predecessor and a sufficiently comfortable ride, even on 20” AMG Multi Spoke alloys. While the GLA is 100mm taller and slightly wider than its previous model, it is one of the most compact in its range, – in fact it is 15mm shorter than the previous generation and measuring in smaller than the chief rivals Audi Q3 and BMW X1. This makes it easily manoeuvrable and devoid of the cumbersome reputation SUVs have garnered. The dipped front bonnet made gauging tight surroundings quite difficult but credit can be given to the intuitive Mercedes Active Parking Assist with front and rear mounted cameras that provide extra confidence – albeit the sensor alarms were very enthusiastic near kerbs and parking

garages. Consider this a more practical, spacious and consumer appeasing A class – it still feels very composed and planted around sharp corners and bends, although its inherently higher ground clearance does compromise it somewhat. Additionally, the elevated 140mm seating position from its sibling makes for comfortable driving and provides good vision of the surroundings. The A-pillars are not overtly bulky and do not hamper vision between the front windscreen and side windows – overall visibility from the driver’s seat is therefore good. Sitting slightly higher than most other vehicles on the road will generally instil an air of superiority to whoever is behind the wheel, but that is likely where its additional height advantage ends. Most non 4Matic front-wheel-drive GLA’s are unlikely to opt for the trail-less-travelled, which is a good thing since venturing into uneven terrain resulted in parking sensors frequently dispatching warning sounds and an uneasy ride (perhaps the risk of damaging those 20” rims only made this worse). While the local Mercedes-Benz GLA configurator only includes the two engine variants counting the 2.0 turbo diesel in the GLA 200d, our GLA 200 had the alternative, punchy 1.3-litre turbo four cylinder engine with 120kW. While the motor is well suited to lumbering around at low RPM and cruising on open roads, more spirited bursts of driving presented an annoying engine whine on deceleration which was exacerbated when the windows were open. Engine sound is as expected in a family orientated vehicle: numb, although there was a significant audible difference once the Sport mode was engaged. While the smoother, newer 8 speed gearbox of the local range is limited to the GLA 200 d, the only choice in our car was the 7 speed dual-clutchtransmission (DCT). While it felt less evolved and more hesitant in grabbing a gear than the

8 speed DCT in its diesel partner, it is still well suited for use as a comfortable runabout and highway cruiser. With engine rpm well below 2500 at 120km/h it provides good efficiency too, the combined figure for both urban and open road driving while under our care was about 7l/100km – disclaimer: spirited driving was top of the agenda and economy mode was only engaged once. As mentioned earlier, the interior is comfortable and spacious. The double screen layout provides a sensibly laid out display for the driver and central infotainment system while space-age inspired air vents take the focal point just below. The customisable displays and interior LED lighting allow for personalisation, while the central infotainment system has the ability to learn the drivers preference over time. The user interface is well integrated, but certain applications can be clunky to retrieve and process information like fuel economy and driving analytics. But the tactility of the central trackpad and drivers buttons can forgive some of the niggles. It was noted by other members of the team that material quality and overall fit and finish has taken a big step up from its hatchback sibling. Space is abundant for both the driver and any passengers in the GLA, with sufficient leg and head room for normal sized adults in the rear. However, cargo space is where it falls short, even with 2 adjustable boot floor heights, the GLA has one of the least volumetric boot capacities in the segment at 435l. The GLA 200 is therefore a well balanced vehicle that is dressed up as an SUV. It is an option that will make valid sense to the consumer that is looking to satisfy as many driving and lifestyle needs as possible, while still retaining a three-pointed star on its grille. With a base price starting at R679 040, it is the most expensive of the lot too. Although it comes with a list of standard equipment, speccing options such as larger diameter rims and interior comforts could send the price closer to the R800 000 mark.

Waaiwater Auction delivers excellent results On Friday, February 5, 2021, Waaiwater Farming held its production auction. The wet weather did not deter the buyers, and the auction went well. It was an outstanding sheep offer, and the average looks as follow: Pregnant twins, 2 tooth ewes, were sold at an average of R 3 500. Pregnant singles, 2 tooth ewes, were sold at an average of R 2 900. Pregnant twins, 4 tooth ewes, were sold at an average of R 3 450. Pregnant singles, 4 tooth ewes, were sold at an average of R2 600. Pregnant twins, 6 to 8 tooth ewes, were sold at an average of R 3 300. Pregnant singles, 6 to 8 tooth ewes, were sold at an average of R2 600. The cattle were out of the books, and the average looks as follows: Cows with calves (3 in 1) were sold at an average of R 28 231. Pregnant cows were sold at an average of R 19 088. Pregnant heifers were sold at an average of R 18 000. Open heifers were sold at an average of R 13 600. Waaiwater Boerdery and BKB Louwid thank all buyers for a successful day. BKB Louwid Bethlehem hosted the auction with Bennie van der Merwe as auctioneer.
