BETHLEHEM: Op Vrydag 15 Oktober 2021 is twee leeus, by name Samson en Tom, veilig oorgeplaas van die Seaview Predator Park in Gqeberha Port (voorheen bekend as Port Elizabeth) na hul nuwe tuiste hier in Bethlehem. Hulle sal nou gemaklik tuisgaan by Lionsrock, net buite Bethlehem, 'n leeupark (en veilige hawe vir groot katte) van die wêreldwye dierewelsynsorganisasie, ‘Four Paws’. Hildegard Pirker, terrein bestuurder, sê voor die lang reis na hul nuwe tuiste, is Simson en Tom deur 'n veearts op die terrein verdoof en ondersoek en in afsonderlike vervoerkratte gelaai. Sy sê hulle het al gesamentlik meer as 100 groot katte uit dieretuine, sirkusse, teelgeriewe en ander plekke wêreldwyd gered. Pirker sê die land het jare lank toegelaat dat leeus geteel word en ongereguleerd in ballingskap gehou word. Sy het gesê dat Simson en Tom slegs twee van 'n geskatte 12 000 leeus is wat in aanhouding in privaat fasiliteite regoor die land aangehou word. Die leeu-park het op hul sosiale media -bladsy Vrydag, ná hul aankoms geskryf: “Ons het goeie nuus! Simson en Tom het veilig op Lionsrock aangekom! Dit was 'n lang reis vir beide die leeus en ons span, maar dit is 'n groot beloning as so 'n reis met so 'n enorme sukses afgehandel word. Na 'n lekker lang slaap was albei leeus gereed om hul nuwe omgewing te verken. Tydens die vrylating het Simson uit sy krat gestorm terwyl Tom genadiglik en kalm uitstap het. Simson en Tom sal in hul voedingsgebied bly sodat ons kundige span hul gesondheid en vordering kan monitor. Dankie dat u deel was van hul reis!

The Free State Cricket Union has admitted to providing substandard accommodation for academy players, all of whom were black, as recently as 2019, but denied any racial discrimination in the province's cricketing structures. Speaking at the resumption of Cricket South Africa's Social Justice and Nation-Building (SJN) hearings, Free State CEO Johan van Heerden expressed regret with the provisions his union made for up-and-coming players in their system but said the facilities in Bloemfontein remain exemplary for anyone hoping to further their cricketing career. Van Heerden was the first responder after a ten-week recess and will be followed by several others, of whom will be answering to allegations of discrimination made in the first phase of the hearings between July 5 and August 6. van Heerden specifically addressed issues raised by two-time T20I cap Eddie Leie, who expressed concerns over the living conditions of younger academy players among other things. Leie's affidavit, submitted to the SJN earlier in the year, contained images of the Mangaung Oval's old gymnasium, which had been converted into a residence for academy players, at the request of the academy coach. Although not displayed on the SJN's YouTube channel, the pictures showed basic accommodation which Sandile July - one of ombudsman Dumisa Ntsebeza's assistants - described as "not even a star, never mind five", and which van Heerden conceded the union was embarrassed about. "If you look at the photos and if you ask me if I would advertise accommodation like that, absolutely I wouldn't," van Heerden said. "He requested us to assist on a short-term basis player who could not get into the university. They are not from Bloemfontein, but most probably from here in Bethlehem and Kroonstad and places from where they would have travelled in for the day and back," van Heerden said. "When Dillon requested that, we used the old gym at the downstairs western pavilion and revamped it into accommodation. We developed it into three bedrooms with partitioning walls. It was fairly private but not five-star accommodation. It was not as permanent accommodation but solely for a short term. "The accommodation was not five-star, but they had TVs, they had brand-new beds, it was very neat at the time when they moved in. Part of the arrangement was that they would have to upkeep it themselves, not upkeep but clean it, as it wouldn't have been a serviced area. It's not something I would pride ourselves on. After the kids moved out, we have never used that accommodation any further.

Did we ever think it was the best solution? Most probably not. It was made into living accommodation - not that we want to pride ourselves on it." Asked if all of the players using the accommodation were black, van Heerden said: "I don't think there was a white player in there." In hindsight, van Heerden said it was "a mistake from Free State's side… but it was never meant in a bad way. It was meant to see how we could get kids to the next level." When pushed on whether he could understand Leie's dismay at seeing young black players living in such conditions, van Heerden agreed that Leie had cause to be distressed, albeit that he lived in better accommodation. "If I was a player, I would have felt that way too," van Heerden said.

"Eddie didn't live there. He had a flat that was rented by the franchise. It wasn't at the stadium. He was a professional, earning quite a lot of money and he would have been able to pay for his accommodation." Leie moved to the Free State from Gauteng and also claimed to be unhappy with the way his career went in Bloemfontein, where he hoped he would be able to push for a more permanent place in the national side. According to van Heerden, Bloemfontein remains a place where cricketers, and especially black cricketers, can advance themselves.

"We've had so many black players coming through who enjoy it and have improved their cricket to the extent that they can play for the national team. We have a team set-up that I believe is culturally the best in South Africa," van Heerden said. "I believe that in Bloemfontein the social life is different to any other province or city so if you love to be at the sea, you are going to find it difficult but our facilities are fantastic. The nets are good. If your purpose is to come here and get yourself into the team, this is the place to make it happen." Van Heerden also emphasised that the team culture is healthy. "It's a family team set-up. We don't have the bright lights or the sea. It's a small community, a family-orientated, small set-up with strong disciplines on the field and in fitness. It's more difficult for younger kids to grow up in Bloemfontein than those in Durban or Johannesburg. There are not many attractions, but the team will do things like have a braai together once a month. We are quite a happy family."

CLARENS: 'n Plaaslike kunstenaar hier van die Oos -Vrystaat is hartseer oor die dood van haar hond nadat hy deur 'n poffadder gepik is, maar is ten minste dankbaar dat haar ander hond oorleef het. Dié deel van die Vrystaat waar sy Pictures: vlaktes Facebook woon, is 'n pragtige deel van die wêreld, wat bestaan ​uit uitgestrekte met heuwels en asemrowende berg-uitsigte. Mollie is ongelukkig die volgende oggend dood. Luna was nog steeds siek, maar het begin verbeter. “Ons is hartseer,” sê Collett. “Jou diere is mos net soos kinders! Ons weet dat ons tussen baie slange leef, maar ons het nog nooit só iets beleef nie. Mense het ons al op Facebook gevra hoekom ons nie ‘n teengif-middel ten alle tye by ons aanhou nie, omrede ons in die middel van nêrens woon. 'n Teengif-middel is ongelooflik baie duur – veral vir my op die inkomste van 'n kunstenaar. Boonop is dit ook geen waarborg dat hulle ‘n slang-pik sal oorleef nie. Die plaaslike veearts het vir ons gesê 'n hond se kans is nog steeds slegs 50/50, selfs al is ‘n teengifmiddel vir die dier gegee. Ons het net gehoop en gebid dat Luna sou oorleef met behulp van die kortisoon en penisillien - en sy het. Teen Maandagoggend was Luna weer amper haar ou self. Die ergste swelling het afgeneem, afgesien van nog geringe swelling hier en daar. Sy blaf en speel weer en ons glo dat sy binnekort weer in top kondisie sal wees, ”sê Collett. “Ek dink ons ​is geneig om te vergeet waar ons woon. Ek en Kobus is baie lief vir tuinmaak en om te gaan stap, maar hierdie ervaring het ons geleer dat ons baie meer versigtig moet wees en ook moet dink aan ander maniere om ons diere voldoende te beskerm.”

“Hoe kan ’n jongmens leef soos U wil hê?”

(Ps. 119:9, Die Boodskap) Hoe kan ’n jongmens sy lewe skoon, suiwer, vlekloos en blaamloos hou? “Deur hom te hou aan die woord”, antwoord vers 9 die vraag. Deur te doen wat die Here sê, deur die Woord van God as riglyn te volg. Ek wil amper byvoeg: en hoe gaan hy dit doen as hy nie die Woord gehoor het nie? En hoe gaan hy weet hoe om die Woord wat hy gehoor het, prakties op sy lewenspad toe te pas as iemand hom nie gewys het en voor hom uit loop nie? Hoe sal hy op daai suiwer pad kan bly as daar nie ’n hand is wat hom begelei nie, as daar nie sagte veiligheidsheinings is waarteen hy kan terugbons nie? Daai heinings is die liefdevolle arms van die ouers en leiers en mentors in sy lewe en natuurlik die Here self, wie se hand altyd uitgestrek is om sy kinders te lei en te leer. Dalk voel jy dat jy gefaal het met jou kinders, dan kan jy dalk leer uit jou foute en nou ’n voorbeeld wees in ander jongmense se lewens by jou kerk, in jou familie, by jou werk, ens. Daar is iets wat ek vir ’n feit weet en dit is dat jongmense nie preke en sedelessies van ons af wil hê nie. Hulle wil sien hoe jý daai preke en lesse prakties leef. Hulle verwag egtheid van ons, nie volmaaktheid nie. Dalk het jy gefaal met jou eie kinders, dan het jy dalk weer ’n kans met jou kleinkinders.

Gebruik dit! Hoe kan ’n jongmens sy pad suiwer hou? Deur ouers en ander volwassenes se voorbidding. Miskien kan ons gebede die nodige trapklippe op hulle pad wees. “Jy wat jonk is, moet vreugde vind in jou jeug en jou jong dae ten volle geniet. Doen wat jy goedvind en waarvan jy hou, maar moenie vergeet dat God van jou rekenskap sal eis oor alles nie. Hou kommer uit jou hart en vermy wat jou liggaam kan kwaad doen.” (Pred. 11:9-10)

The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; He delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

If you could see my suitcase!

I don’t think that there’s a single one of us who doesn’t have some scars on our soul from the things we’ve been through in the past. It’s just life. So why are so many people ashamed of their scars?

Over this last eighteen months or so, my much used, much loved suitcase has spent most of its time tucked away in the bottom of my wardrobe. Obviously, with the whole COVID-19 thing, there hasn’t been a lot of travel.

But still, it’s covered with those barcode labels they stick on at check-in to automatically route it through luggage handling to the right plane. It has dings and scratches. It’s had its wheels replaced multiple times, and yet still it soldiers on.

I love that old suitcase. It’s served me so well over the years – something to which all those stickers, those scratches, those scars, readily attest.

The Apostle Paul was a lot like that. Man, he went through so much – beatings, imprisonment, shipwrecks, assassination attempts. Have a listen to what he says: Galatians 6:17 So don’t give me any more trouble. I have scars on my body that show I belong to Jesus.

In other words, those scars attest to all that He’s been through for God. He uses them, declares them as evidence before people who are trying to give him a hard time.

Listen to me. Those scars on your soul, they’re part of who you are. They attest to what you’ve been through. And scars also speak of healing. If I can feel affection towards an old suitcase that’s served me faithfully, imagine … just imagine … the love that God has for you … scars and all.

Those scars are beautiful in His sight. Those scars on your soul show that you belong to Jesus.

Met die verkiesing om die draai waar partye en kanidate nou teen mekaar meeding, deel ek graag 5 lewensveranderde beginsels met ons toekomstige “leiers” en sommer met julle ook: DIE LEWE IS HARD. Ongelukkig is dit vir niemand van ons ’n geheim dat die lewe soms hard en onregverdig is nie.

Geloof is ook glad nie ’n waarborg dat ons ’n goeie, maklike lewe sonder teenspoed gaan hê nie. Geloof is ’n verhouding met God wat juis vir jou die krag gee om hierdie harde lewe te hanteer. DIE LEWE GAAN NIE OOR MY NIE. Die Bybel leer ons keer op keer dat ander mense saak maak. As gelowiges, maar juis as leiers, is ons hier tot voordeel van ander mense. EK IS NIE BELANGRIK NIE. Hier gaan dit oor “my ego” wat “onder beheer” is. Mense wil so dikwels “gode” wees. Ons wil nie buig nie, ons wil die gode wees! Maar die hart van Jesus is die teenoorgestelde. Markus 10:45 sê: “Ek het nie gekom om gedien te word nie, maar om te dien. Om my lewe te gee as ’n losprys.” In Markus 9 en 10 sê Jesus: “As jy in my kring eerste wil wees, moet jy heel laaste wees en almal se dienskneg word.” EK IS NIE IN BEHEER NIE. Ons voel dikwels dat ons nie in beheer is nie. Hier is waardevolle raad vir jou: Maak betyds vrede daarmee dat jy nie in beheer hoef te wees nie. Jy hoef nie onverskillig te wees nie, maar soos ’n klein kindjie aan die Here se voete rus gevind het, moet ons by die Here rus vind in ons afhanklikheid aan Hom. DIE LEWE IS KORT. Ons moet elke dag voluit vir die Here leef. Dis ons werk as leiers om dit te modelleer en om ander mense te begelei om dieselfde te doen. Deur ware leiers te wees wat God se beginsels in ander mense se lewens uitdra, kan ons mekaar op waardevolle maniere ondersteun.

ONTHOU: Dit is uitdagend om ’n leier te wees, want leiers se roeping is om ander mense te help om die beste storie met hulle eie lewe te skryf. Leierskap gaan NIE oor daardie drie gewilde persone “Me, Myself and I” nie. Leierskap gaan oor ander.

Government elections POVERTY IN SOUTH AFRICA Poverty is one of the key issues political parties are addressing ahead of the municipal elections, set to take place on November 1. Citizens will elect representatives for district, metropolitan and local municipal councils across the country’s nine provinces. “The only thing that can lift millions of South Africans out of crippling poverty is the kind of economic activity that brings millions of jobs,” argues the Democratic Alliance in its election manifesto.

How is poverty defined in South Africa? And how many people are considered poor? We answer these questions and more. 1. How is poverty measured? Poverty lines are official thresholds below which people are considered poor, according to Statistics South Africa (Stats SA). The three poverty lines ‘capture different degrees of poverty and allow the country to measure and monitor poverty at different levels, says Stats SA. The food poverty line is the amount of money a person needs to get the minimum required daily nutrition. This is around 2 100 calories per day. In 2021, this amount was set at R624 per person per month. The lower-bound poverty line includes non-food household items. People at this level would need to ‘sacrifice food to obtain these’. In 2021, it was set at R890 per person per month. The upper-bound poverty line includes both adequate food and non-food household items, such as shelter, clothing and transportation. In 2021, it was set at R1 335 per person per month. 2. How many people live in poverty? The latest data from Stats SA showed that 30.4 million South Africans fell under the upper-bound poverty line in 2015. This represented 55.5% of the population. This was a decrease from the 31.6 million people who fell under the upper-bound poverty line in 2006. Of those in poverty in South Africa in 2015, almost 13.5 million people fell under the food poverty line. 3. Who is most affected by poverty in South Africa? The race is a strong indicator of the likelihood that someone lives in poverty. In 2015, 64.2% of black people lived below the upper-bound poverty line. In comparison, 41.3% of coloured people, 5.9% of Indian or Asian people and 1% of white people did. Poverty also varies in the country by location. The Eastern Cape had the highest share of poor residents, at 72.9%. Limpopo was marginally lower, at 72.4%. Gauteng had the lowest share of poor residents, at 33.3%. In 2015, 79.2% of South African adults with no education lived in poverty. In comparison, 35.6% of adults with only a matric qualification lived in poverty. The figure was just 8.4% for adults with education beyond high school. More South African children than any other age group are poor. The data shows that poverty is highest for the age group from birth–17. In 2015, 66.8% of children lived in poverty, up from 63.7% in 2011. The age group with the lowest levels of poverty were people aged 45–54, at 42.2%.

2 tsp essential oil (lavender, eucalyptus, rose, orange, and lemongrass are popular for the bath) 2 tsp oil (coconut, olive, or even baby oil)

METODE: Smelt margarien en appelkooskonfyt in mikrogolf en meng droë bestandele.

Los koeksoda in melk op.

Meng om die beurt met droë bestandele by margarien en appelkooskonfyt en skep in kokende stroop.

STROOP: 1 koppie suiker 4 koppies water METODE: Meng suiker en water in groot kastrol met deksel en bring tot kookpunt.

Skep deeg in en maak toe met deksel.

Moenie oopmaak nie en kook 1 uur op matige hitte.

Bedien saam met vla, stywe room of roomys.

A few drops of food colouring.

A mould of your choice, such as regular or mini-muffin tins, candy pans, or round plastic moulds specifically for bath bombs Optional: Dried flowers or sugar cake decorations, like flowers or stars Bath Bomb Instructions: Step 1: Except for the citric acid, mix the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Step 2: Pour all of the liquid ingredients in a jar with a top.

Close the jar and shake it vigorously. Step 3: Pour the liquid mixture into the bowl of dry ingredients, and use your hands to combine and meld together. At this point, add the citric acid. You'll probably notice a slight fizzing reaction because of the citric acid. No need to panic, as this is normal. The mixture should be a bit crumbly (similar to the consistency of wet beach sand). Whatever you do, don't add water at this stage, or the bath bomb will fizz prematurely and be ruined. Step 4: Mash the mixture into your chosen moulds very tightly. You can overfill the moulds slightly and use a spoon or glass to press the mixture in as tightly as possible. Immediately loosen the bombs from their moulds onto wax paper and let them dry overnight. Step 5: Give the bath bombs a day or two to completely dry before using them or wrapping them up as gifts. Step 6: Pop one in the bathtub, enjoy the burst of colours and fizz and inhale the released aromas. Turn on some of your favourite music or a podcast to accompany you while you soak, or simply slide into the bath and enjoy all of your hard work. Packing Your Bath Bombs: These bath bombs make perfect gifts (for others or yourself—self-care is important!). You can put both large or small ones in cellophane gift bags (like the ones you'd typically buy for cookies) or stack smaller ones in a wide-mouth mason jar. Make a few batches using different colours and add various essential oils for an array of scents if you'd like some variety. Bath bombs typically last about six months as long as they are packaged well in airtight jars, Tupperware containers, or sealed plastic bags and stored in a dry environment like a cupboard. Storing them in the bathroom or out in the open air isn’t ideal as steam and moisture cause the citric acid to lose its potency and your bath bomb will not initiate the fizzy effervescence you’re after.

Osteoporosis is said to be a disease categorized by the deterioration of bone tissue and low bone mass that increases the risk of fracture. Bones become weak and brittle that a fall or even mild stress such as bending over, or coughing may cause a fracture. This is because the creation of new bone doesn’t keep up with the loss of old bone. The most common fractures are those of the hip, spine and wrist. Medications, a healthy diet and weight-bearing exercise can help prevent bone loss or strengthen already weak bones. The structure of the bone deteriorates (bone become weak and brittle). The bones become too weak and brittle to sustain ordinary strains or falls.

Osteoporosis patients have a much greater risk of breaking a bone, especially those of the hip, spine and wrist. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS: Back pain, Loss of height over time, a bent posture, a bone fracture that occurs much more easily than expected. DIAGNOSIS OF DISEASE: A bone mineral density (BMD) test will confirm osteoporosis in a patient.

A BMD test is safe and painless. It measures the density of the bones. The BMD test will also detect low bone density in its early stages predict future risk of fracture determine the rate of bone loss assists your doctor in choosing the appropriate treatment. RISK FACTORS: The use of steroids can affect the amount of calcium in the body by reducing the amount absorbed by the gut and increasing the amount excreted by the kidneys thus affecting the production of bone. Lack of estrogen, for example, due to menopause or hysterectomy increases

your risk as it increases bone loss. Lack of weight-bearing exercise may increase your risk for calcium loss from your bones. Lack of calcium or vitamin D in your diet. Vitamin K containing foods such as dark green vegetables. Vitamin C containing foods such as bell peppers, oranges, grapefruits, strawberries, pineapples, etc. Magnesium containing foods such as spinach, sweet potatoes, raisins, plantains, artichokes, beet greens, etc. Another source of vitamin D is exposure to sunlight. It is recommended that one needs at least 15 minutes of sunlight exposure a day. Regular exercise is needed for bone mass. Weight-bearing exercise, resistance training or strength exercise for bone density is recommended. This includes walking, running, hiking, etc. Try to exercise for at least 30 minutes a day for a minimum of five days per week. Avoid excessive intake of alcohol as alcohol interferes with the absorption of vitamin D. People who drink heavily generally do not have proper nutrition. Try to avoid falls by removing loose wires, reducing clutter, removing throw rugs, putting bars in the bathroom, making sure your house is well lit, putting non-skid rubber mats in the kitchen, putting rails on staircases etc. Chances of getting fractures due to falls increases due to osteoporosis. Stop smoking as it reduces bone density. Family history increases the risk due to inherited factors that affect bone development. Excessive alcohol increases the risk as it will reduce the ability to make bone and increase the risk of bone breaking. Excessive smoking has an increased risk as tobacco has

been seen to have direct toxicity to bones.

Previous fractures have been seen to increase your risk. A medical condition that affects absorption such as coeliac disease may increase your risk as calcium won’t get absorbed properly.

COMPLICATIONS: Mobility can become limited as osteoporosis can be disabling and limit your physical activity causing you to gain weight which can then increase strain on your bones especially your knees and hips. Weight gain can also increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Depression can be caused by being isolated and losing independence due to limited physical activity. This is due to the fact the activities that one once enjoyed cause pain if tried due to osteoporosis. Severe pain caused by fractures as a result of osteoporosis. Fractures may result in loss of height, a stooping posture and persistent back, hip and neck pain.

Deformities are due to strain on the bones which can affect your ability to walk.

GENERAL HEALTH TIPS: Having a healthy diet is important for bone growth.

Foods that contain calcium, vitamin D, potassium, vitamin K, vitamin C, magnesium, etc. Calcium containing foods such as dairy products, canned sardines or salmon (with bones), turnip, kale, okra, Chinese cabbage, broccoli, etc. Vitamin D containing food such as dairy products, some cereals, bread, fatty varieties such as salmon, mackerel, tuna, sardines, etc. Potassium containing foods such as tomato products, raisins, potatoes, spinach, sweet potatoes, bananas, prunes, papaya, etc.
