BETHLEHEM: Maritha Swanepoel (72 jaar oud), ‘n alombekende inwoner en geliefde dame in die gemeenskap van Bethlehem, veral vir haar betrokkenheid as lid van die Vriende Van Die Museum is op Saterdag 11 September 2021, deur ‘n onbekende boosdoener oorval en aangeval. “Sy was besig om ‘n twee-uur lange skof die oggend (10-uur tot 12uur) by die museum te doen toe ‘n netjies-geklede man die klokkie van die museum gelui het”,het haar seun, Conrad Swanepoel, aan die media vertel. Omrede sy die oggend tydens haar skof ‘n afspraak met iemand wat sy goed ken gehad het, hy sy vermoed dit was die persoon wat daar opgedaag het, maar het toe dié vreemde man by die tralliehek gesien staan. Hy wou, volgens haar die museum kom besoek het en sy het aan hom meegedeel dat hulle ‘n R10 ingangsfooi vir die besoek hef. Hy het aan haar ‘n R50 oorhandig en sy het hom die museum laat binnekom. Kort nadat hy toegang by Swanepoel gekry het, het hy haar begin dreig. Hy het haar gevra waar haar selfoon is en of sy enige kontant by haar het? Swanepoel het aan hom gesê dat daar nie kontant op die perseel is nie, maar hy het haar nietemin verder in die gebou ingedwing. Uit ‘n desperate poging om die man skrik op die lyf te jaag, het sy spontaan net ‘n naam uitgeroep, met die hoop dat die man dalk moet dink dat daar nog iemand in die gebou saam met haar is en dat hy sou pad vat. In die proses het daar ‘n struweling tussen haar en die man plaasgevind, waar hy haar toe van die trappe afgestamp het, sy gestruikel het en het sy nadat sy neergeslaan het, haar bewussyn verloor. Die persoon met wie sy die afspraak gehad het, het daar opgedaag en op Swanepoel en haar toestand afgekom. Hy het onmiddelik die abulans ontbied, waar sy na die Hoogland MediClinic geneem is vir ‘n ondersoek. Sy is toe deur dokters oorgeplaas na die Bloemfontein MediClinic vir verdere mediese sorg.

Swanepoel is toe in die hospitaal se hoësorgeenheid geplaas vir behandeling. Dokters gaan besluit of sy ‘n operasie moet ondergaan of nie, nadat haar toestand gestabiliseer het.

Volgens Swanepoel se seun, wat die gebeure van die situasie gedeel het, woon sy moeder al vir langer as 50jaar in Bethlehem. Sy was sedert 2016 betrokke by die museum en sy bedrywighede. Volgens die polisie is geen verdagte in verband met die voorval in hegtenis geneem nie.

Oorlog teen jouself en dinge wat in jou woed. Ek sien in my geestesoog dat die Here vir my en jou sê: Kom, kom saam met My na waters waar rus is.

Kom skakel af vir 'n klein rukkie en verplaas jouself na 'n plek waar dit net Ek en jy is. Net ons twee, geen geraas, geen tegnologie wat jou lewe oorgeneem het nie, net ons twee, Ek en jy, in die natuur. Kom pak 'n vuurtjie, dan sit Ek daar by jou, en dan vertel jy my van jou vrese en vreugdes, kom luister na die naggeluide, voel die ritsel van 'n koel briesie teen jou vel. A MAN (DOCTOR) SO CLOSE TO OUR HEARTS!

Free State (Regional): Pediatric heart specialist at the University of the Free State (UFS) Prof. Stephen Brown is leading a collaborative initiative aimed at saving the lives of children with heart defects here in the Free State. This involves the UFS, the mother and Child Academic Hospital (Macah) Foundation and the Discovery Fund. The collaboration was announced on 1 September. An outreach project that was started in 2016 has been improved to reach rural areas in the Free State to diagnose heart defects in babies early. “It will help curb the death of young patients due to congenital heart disease, and make services more accessible to rural communities,” said Brown. He is principal specialist and head of the division of pediatric cardiology in the department of pediatrics and child health in the faculty of health sciences at the UFS. He also renders service at the Universitas Academic Hospital in Bloemfontein. “Babies in the rural areas of South Africa may die as a result of an undiagnosed heart lesion, because everyone assumes that they have respiratory problems when they actually have critical congenital heart disease – up to 85% of which is curable.” Brown said the success of the project increased prospects to grow and expand it to other rural areas and provinces. “We initiated an outreach programme because some patients found it difficult to get transport to our central hospital. Since the Free State is considered rural, there are long distances to travel. Our concept was that we should take the service to grassroots level to make it more convenient for the parents and caretakers. “We partnered with Macah, and since the early detection of congenital heart disease makes a big difference, it fits in nicely with Macah’s first 1 000 days drive.” Prof. André Venter, chairperson of the Macah Foundation, said one of the main commitments in central South Africa related to their belief that the first 1 000 days in any child’s life determine their trajectory for life. “We should do everything in our power to ensure that this 1 000-day journey is optimal for each child, including conception, pregnancy, birth and health during the first two years of life,” he said. Brown said the hard work of Tertia de Bruyn attracted partners such as Discovery. He also attributed success to the expertise and dedication of Dr Daniel Buys of the UFS department of paediatrics and child health and Rudolph Pretorius, echocardiography technician. The diagnosing of heart lesions is being conducted by a mobile echocardiography apparatus which was donated by the Discovery Foundation via Macah. The machine looks like a laptop and can be transported in a carry case. “We see 170 to 250 patients on an annual basis. Since initiation in 2020, the Pelonomi Hospital has seen on average 40 children per month receiving a heart sonar.” The service is confined to secondary hospitals that include the Mofumahadi Manapo Mopeli Regional Hospital in Qwaqwa, the Bongani Regional Hospital in Welkom and the Dihlabeng Regional Hospital in Bethlehem, as well as the Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein.

Kyk as daar nou 'n man was wat bok (lees 4 letters later as die eerste letter) verskriklik baie kon gebruik en sonder dat dit aanstoot gee, was dit oupa Piet van Wyk. Hy het die veeveilingsbedryf in Suid-Afrika begin. Ou dokumente wat in die 1990's in sy beskeie kantoortjie op Bultfontein gevind is, is bewys dat Van Wyk Lewende Hawe reeds in die laat 60's maklik 'n veilingsomset van 'n miljoen plus behaal het. Oupa kon 'n tollie se gewig perfek op die hoef skat. Hy was ook die man wat syhemde daagliks gedra het. Spierwit. As hy 'n bees so bekyk en die boude dril van blink vet, kan jy maar weet oupa spekuleer in die eerste klas. Oupa het maklik gesê iets is fokken mooi. Of die nefies, nie ek nie want ek was die enigste meisiekind, moes die f*n hondedrolle optel. Hy het altyd vir jou werk uitgedink. Oupa het sy lewe lank met 'n Cressida geboer. Ja, sommer in die veld en orals met die voertuig gery. Oupa was Nigel. Sy karre was altyd TDG 3.

Hy was grênd. Die vroue het geswig en hulself op silwer skinkborde vir die welvarende man aangebied. Foutjie soms. Maar nou ja, ek was baie lief vir my stiefouma Dot. Sy het die hoogste hakskoene gedra. Altyd paplap-bloese. Oupa het net twee bloed dogters gehad. Tannie Hettie en my ma Kotie. Maar in sy woord: "Ek het 'n f*'n groot familie!“ Van schemes aanhoor, kon oupa 'n boek skryf. Oupa moes in sy 70's 'n pasaangeër kry. Hy gaan vir 'n checkup. Die battery is nog reg vir 4 jaar. Op sy 80ste verjaardag is grootbek aan die woord. Ek seg toe oupa sal Salomo se rekord kan breek want sy battery is nog sharp. Slim was oupa beslis. Hy het voerkrale begin. Langs Nigel op Bultfontein, plaas wat hy met 'n span osse ingebreek het. Die inwoners het gekla oor die vlieë. Die gesondheids- beamptes maak plegtig 'n afspraak met oom Piet. Die vlieë... Oupa antwoord mooi op sy beste Afrikaans. Wys my f*'n brandmerk op die vlieë, dan kan julle met my kom kla. Andersins, gaan soek die ou wat die vlieë besit.

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month 2021 01 – 30 September September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and is symbolized by a gold ribbon, worn to commemorate the event. This is an annual international awareness month to raise support, funding and awareness of childhood cancers and the impact for sufferers and families of sufferers of childhood cancer.

What Is Pediatric Cancer? Cancer is uncommon in children but can happen. The most common childhood cancers are: Leukemia. The most common cancer in children is acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). Lymphoma, brain cancer. In teens, osteosarcoma (bone cancer). Pediatric, or childhood, cancers and how they're treated have important differences from cancers that adults get, such as the things that cause cancer in kids usually differ from those that cause cancer in adults (for example, smoking). Kids usually respond well to treatment. Most kids with cancer get better. Side effects of cancer treatments can be more severe and longer-lasting. Children who have had cancer will need careful medical follow-up for the rest of their lives. Why Do Kids Get Cancer? Most of the time, doctors don't know why kids get cancer. In children, a genetic condition, such as Down syndrome, can sometimes increase the risk of cancer. Kids who have had chemotherapy or radiation treatment for cancer are more likely to get cancer again. But most cases of childhood cancer happen because of random mutations (changes) in the genes of growing cells. Because these changes happen randomly, there is no effective way to prevent them. How Is Cancer Treated?

Getting treatment at a medical center that specializes in pediatric oncology (treatment of childhood cancer) can help kids with cancer get the best care. The treatment of cancer in children can include: surgery: removing cancerous cells or tumors, chemotherapy: using medical drugs to kill cancer cells, radiation therapy: using radiant energy to kill cancer cells, bone marrow (stem cell) transplant: putting healthy stem cells into the bloodstream so they can make healthy new blood, bone marrow, and immune system cells. Doctors may use one or more of these treatments for a child who has cancer. The type of treatment needed depends on the child's age, the type of cancer, and how severe the cancer is.

How Can Parents Help? The main goal when treating kids with cancer is to cure them. While treatment may cause side effects, many medicines and therapies can make kids more comfortable while they're treated for cancer. When possible, involve kids with their own cancer treatment. Use language your child will understand and explain the facts about cancer and its effects. With a younger child — toddlers and those younger than age 4 — saying that they are "sick" and need "medicine" to get better can be enough of an explanation. For all age groups, the goal is to prevent fear and misunderstanding. Many kids might feel guilty as if the cancer is somehow their fault. Psychologists, social workers, and other members of the cancer treatment team can be a great help in reassuring them and helping them cope with their feelings. Having a child being treated for cancer can feel overwhelming for any family. But you're not alone. To find support, talk to anyone on the care team or a hospital social worker. Many resources are available to help you and your child.

CITIZENS URGED TO COLLECT IDS FROM HOME AFFAIRS AHEAD OF LOCAL ELECTIONS Parliament has urged the public to collect their IDs from the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) so they can register and vote in the upcoming local government elections. The call comes ahead of voter registration weekend, which will take place on 18-19 September. ‘Satisfied’ - The portfolio committee on home affairs and the select committee on security and justice, which was recently briefed by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), expressed its satisfaction that the commission was ready to deliver free and fair elections despite the constraints imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The committees noted that the 2021 local elections will occur at an extremely difficult time when the third wave of Covid-19 infections is still ravaging some provinces. “As a result, the committee has called the IEC to strengthen non-pharmaceutical Interventions, such as social distancing and availability of personal protective equipment [PPE] to safeguard electoral staff against infections,” parliamentary spokesperson Malatswa Molepo said in a statement. The committee welcomed the scheduled voter registration weekend, as well as the procurement of 40,000 new voter management devices, which will be used for the first time during the upcoming elections.

IDs- While the Department of Home Affairs continues to issue new IDs and temporary identification certificates to enable people to register and vote during the elections, the committees urged the public to collect their IDs. “We urge that people must approach the DHA to collect about 418,000 IDs that remain in the DHA offices,” said Mosa Chabane, the chairperson of the portfolio committee on home affairs. The committees also welcomed Home Affairs’ decision to open its offices during the voter registration weekend to enable people to collect their IDs. “The committees will monitor the roll out of the voter registration weekend and have committed to invite the IEC for a further update after the voter registration weekend.” Election’s date - Last Wednesday, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma announced a new date for the elections, which has been set for between 1 November. This is after the Constitutional Court (ConCourt) ordered the IEC to hold the municipal elections between 27 October and 1 November. Dlamini-Zuma had initially proclaimed 27 October as the date for the elections, but due to the ConCourt’s ruling, the IEC had to amend its election timetable. The applications for special votes will open 20 September and close on 4 October.
