LEANING INTO Jewish community AT wartime Dear Friends, It is no secret that we are living in challenging times. The ongoing war in Israel has once again stirred emotions, invoking deep

our Beth Israel community, not only as a source of support but as a beacon of strength, unity, and light during these challenging times. As Chanukah approaches while in the midst of war, I am reminded of what the rabbis teach in the Talmud: reminding us to place the Chanukah lamp outside of our homes, next to the doorway so that our light can be shared with others (we find this most visible in homes throughout the Old City in Jerusalem). Yet, the rabbis also acknowledge that in times of danger, one may place their Chanukiah on an inside table. My family was never one where we placed our Chanukiah on the table as I was growing up. Rather, we displayed it prominently in our window for all of our neighbors to see. Placing the Chanukiah on my kitchen table, out of sight, was never my reality. Yet, I have come to realize all that was built in my lifetime to ensure that it was safe to put the Chanukiah outside, is suddenly less certain. At the same time, I am mindful that our Jewish pride carries a heavier weight in these moments, that being a “light unto the nations” as a Jewish people who strive to be a light and a nation deserving of self-determination cannot be called into question.

In times of strife and conflict, our light (literally and figuratively) is illuminated when our solidarity becomes not just a source of comfort but an imperative for resilience and hope. fellow community members. Now, in these heightened times, our sacred space becomes essential for healing, support, and the collective pursuit of peace. This year, as we light our Chanukah candles, let us draw strength from our shared heritage, fostering compassion, empathy, and unwavering support for our fellow Jewish community in Israel. May our collective efforts contribute to the eventual realization of peace, and may we know that our community will continue to be a source of comfort, solidarity, and unwavering support for one another during these challenging times.

Chanukah Sameach! Rabbi Jason Nevarez

That is why, in this moment, I refuse to go back to any version of the inside table to serve as a type of measure of safety or protection. In times of strife and conf lict, our light (literally and figuratively) is illuminated when our solidarity becomes not just a source of comfort but an imperative for resilience and hope. The tumultuous events that have and continue to unfold highlight the necessity of coming together to share those rays of light with our neighbors, with our world, as a measure of enduring hope. Our collective history, marked by trials and triumphs, reminds us of the resilience ingrained in our people. The concept of Klal Yisrael, the unity of the Jewish people, resonates profoundly during times of

struck a chord with me. In this moment, when many of us are feeling a sense of powerlessness and perhaps hopelessness, this wish and hope that what strength we have be straight, direct, and positively affirmed is of critical importance. In conversations with my Jewish friends in both our community and beyond, I hear about all the different ways and places that we are trying to find strength in this time of crisis and fear. Like you, my inbox and social media are full of daily doses of information and appeals regarding the tragic events in Israel. While this is important, I personally don’t find these a source of strength. The shear volume and tempo of them all can sometimes almost seem to drown themselves out from one another. But the work of the community and communities that are engaged in the effort – that effort I find strength in. That the work is being done and will continue to be done, affected but not diminished by the growing antisemitism in our world does give me strength. The isolation, fear, and hopelessness that we feel when we hear about current events is only natural – but our worldwide Jewish community is brave, brilliant, and fierce in its efforts to insure our

An example of this was postponing our Special Meeting of the Congregation on November 8th. This meeting was meant to provide an important educational opportunity for our community on our Capital Campaign and the role and function of the construction of an on campus Mikvah as a part of the Campaign goals. While this meeting was planned well in advance of October 8th, with the focus that so many of our staff, clergy, and membership have on Israel at this moment, it was not the time for this presentation. We plan to re-schedule this meeting into early 2024. The positive biproduct of rescheduling this meeting creates a greater opportunity for education and discussion on and around the Mikvah project.

ISRAEL In a world filled with ongoing challenges and global events, Beth Israel has been at the forefront of fostering understanding, unity, and awareness among its members and the broader community. Following the Hamas attack on October 7, our congregation has organized a series of events aimed at engaging, educating, and empowering our community in support of Israel.

ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 12TH, Beth Israel hosted 'The Current Situation in Israel: An Evening of Understanding and Unity.' This thought-provoking program addressed pressing issues in Israel and created a space for open and meaningful dialogue. The evening concluded with healing music for the soul, emphasizing the importance of connection and spiritual upliftment during challenging times. ON OCTOBER 18TH, we hosted a virtual gathering,

'Guiding College Students: Navigating Conversations About Israel,' bringing together Beth Israel college students from across the United States. Our clergy provided guidance, wisdom, and created a safe space for students to come together and engage in meaningful discussion.

ON NOVEMBER 8TH, Rabbi Nevarez hit the road to visit some of our college students, who are facing an exponential rise of antisemitism on campus. He was fortunate to connect with a number of our greater DC and Denver area students. They talked about life on campus, Hillel, and university admin support. He also met with Hillel Directors to begin conversations of how synagogue communities can better support our students on campus. He provided them with small gifts from our Caring Community and of course, a good meal! ON NOVEMBER 8TH, Rabbi Berk, lead 'Ruach Tzahal – The Israel Defense Forces Code of Ethics', provided valuable insights and interpretations of the Israel Defense Forces' (IDF) code of ethics that offered attendees a deeper understanding of the ethical considerations and moral dilemmas faced by the IDF in the context of the conflict in Israel and Gaza.

ON OCTOBER 25TH, Beth Israel partnered with the American Jewish Committee and Hillel San Diego for 'Combating Antisemitism: Navigating Conversation through the War in Israel.' The event featured a moderated panel discussion with Rabbi Jason Nevarez, Senior Rabbi of Beth Israel; Sara E. Brown, PhD., Regional Director for the American Jewish Committee in San Diego; and Karen Parry, Executive Director of Hillel in San Diego. 6 WINTER 2023 / 5784

SAN DIEGO VIGIL IN SOLIDARITY FOR ISRAEL On November 11, Beth Israel members were among the 4,600 people who attended the vigil in solidarity with Israel on October 10. Rabbi Nevarez's moving prayers, songs, and comforting presence touched the hearts of all who were there.

SHINSHIN YINNON A "shinshin" is an 18-year-old Israeli emissary who volunteers in Jewish communities worldwide for one year, educating people about Israel and Israeli culture. We are grateful to Yinnon for his outstanding work at Beth Israel with our youth, as he fosters our Israel connections and enriches our cultural experience.

MARCH FOR ISRAEL On Tuesday, November 14 at the March for Israel in Washington, DC over 290,000 participants demanded the immediate release of hostages and condemned the rise of antisemitism. Members from Beth Israel and the San Diego community traveled to both participate in and bear witness to this historical event.

HIGH HOLY DAYS

Our spiritual journey during the High Holy Days began with an inspiring S'lichot program—a heartfelt quest for reflection and personal meaning in these aweinspiring days. Rosh Hashanah services were profoundly spiritual, enhanced by the harmonious melodies of both our Youth & Teen and Adult Choirs. At this year's Tashlich Service, the Big T'kiyah Blast brought shofar players of all ages, and the shofarim resonated loud and clear, symbolizing our hope for the upcoming year. We hiked into the second day of Rosh Hashanah, absorbing nature's energy and sharing our hopes for the fresh, open air ahead. Yom Kippur services offered profound introspection, fostering personal growth and connections among congregants. Our Choirs and Chai band enriched the day enriched the day with resonant melodies, adding a harmonious dimension to our worship and promoting unity and spirituality.

During Yom Kippur afternoon, 'Yom Kippur Food For Thought' featured Rabbi Emeritus Michael Berk exploring the essence of humanity, questioning whether we are 'a little less than divine' or mere specks of dust. The session continued with a 'Sermon Talk Back' led by Rabbi Nevarez, fostering diverse perspectives among congregants for deeper insights.

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS JOTH LAYTON

Board Member

Joth has been a member of Beth Israel since the early 60s. Growing up in Chula Vista, his family attended holidays and services at Beth Israel at Third and Laurel. While growing up, Joth attended Beth Israel religious school, had his bar mitzvah, and was involved in the youth choir. In the ’90s, Joth chaired the Beth Israel Young Jewish Network program. During this time, Joth met his wife Robin through Jewish Family Service and married at Beth Israel in 1998. Together they also participated in The Jewish Federation’s Young Professionals program. Beth Israel is also where their twins Garrett and Rachel began their Jewish congregational journey with Beth Israel Babies (BIBS) in 1999. Joth has continued to be involved with the community, enjoying his time as a member of the adult choir and volunteering with Men’s Club events and the Hunger Project. His passion for the Beth Israel community passed to his children, who were both involved with the youth choir and BITY, as well as having their B’nai mitzvah in 2013. Joth received his bachelor’s degree in physics at UCSD and his master’s in mechanical engineering from SDSU and retired in 2020 after 32 years as a Structures Engineer in the aerospace field with Rohr Industries in Chula Vista. Joth enjoys bicycling, rock climbing, hiking, backpacking, skiing, working on mechanical projects, and gardening, and now that Robin and Joth are both retired, they are looking forward to many years of travel.

ELLEN EDWARDS

Community Volunteer I have been a member of CBI since the early 60's starting with what was actually back then Sunday school and continuing on to religious and Hebrew School. My membership continued on as an adult when my husband Larry and I joined again when we married in 1976 and our 2 beautiful daughters, Amy and Kelly, continued on with their Jewish Education through high school. We all enjoyed Jewish family time together with a Chavarah and shared all our simchas and life events together during this time. It was wonderful! My volunteerism began with what was then called Career Women’s Network, now known as Women of Beth Israel or WBI. I have served as both co-President and secretary, a position I currently hold today. The friendships I have made through WBI are truly one of the biggest blessings I treasure the most about CBI. We truly love and care about each other. Since my retirement I have joined the Caring Community and look forward to delivering Mish bags and sharing a smile and hug with the recipients of these bags. It is something I look forward to with great joy. Prior to retirement I spent my career in the healthcare industry. I was actually one of the first women detail (pharmaceutical) representatives. I spent the last 20 years working as a marketing representative for Sharp Healthcare and retired in 2020. My greatest pride however are my 2 daughters, Amy and Kelly, and my adorable 5-year grandson Nicholas. There’s nothing like being a Bubbe!!

Member Spotlight

Beth Israel has been like a second home to me ever since my oldest son started preschool in 1998. Becoming members of Beth Israel was an easy and wonderful decision for our family, and it remains one of the best choices we've ever made. Over the years, we've cherished countless Tot Shabbats, not only for their fun but also for the role they played in nurturing a love for Judaism in my children. These gatherings also introduced us to new people and helped forge lifelong friendships. Beth Israel is a place we love to be for various occasions, from regular holidays to the High Holidays. One of the most memorable events for us is Purim. We've been attending the carnival since my boys were little, enjoying all the festivities, and as they grew, they even joined me in volunteering at the Cotton Candy Booth, which is still run by the extended Bark Family to this day. Naturally, all three of my boys, as well as my nieces Allegra and Arielle, and many cousins, celebrated their B’nei Mitzvahs at Beth Israel. Having received so much from this community, it felt only right to find a way to give back and help make Beth Israel a second home for other families. I proudly served on the Board of Directors for two terms and have chaired the Israel Committee for many years. This committee has accomplished some remarkable work, from bringing in great speakers to our temple to sharing numerous incredible developments from Israel through an email blast. We also organized an Israel Wine Tasting evening for several years, an event I'd like to reintroduce, potentially combined with Israeli food. My time at Beth Israel has also prepared me to be more involved as a volunteer in our Jewish community. I've had the honor of serving as a Past Board Chair for Camp Mountain Chai (and I continue as a board member), Past Council Chair for AIPAC San Diego (remaining an active member), and as a current Board Member for UCR Hillel and Board Chair for Jewish Federation of San Diego, where I previously chaired the Israel and Overseas Committee.

I consider myself extremely fortunate to have Beth Israel as my second home. 12 WINTER 2023 / 5784

I joined Beth Israel with my parents, Karen & Si Coleman, and my brother when we moved to San Diego in 1972. I grew up in the Madrichim program and was a song leader after I completed my bat mitzvah. After college, I returned to San Diego where I married Mike. We are blessed to have our girls, Emily and Kate, participate to their fullest at Beth Israel. Both of our girls became bat mitzvah, were in the Madrichim program and are now doing what they love most, playing in the Tizmoret band under the guidance of Rabbi Cantor Bernstein. Some of our longest and strongest friendships started at this temple. There is a strong sense of belonging here for our family. I know our girls are building lifelong relationships while developing a strong sense of Jewish identity and confidence. I have many favorite experiences over my 45 years at Beth Israel, best are of being at Hebrew Camp. -Stacey Coleman & Mike Chasin Family

R UND CHALLAH

for Rosh Hashana

The recent roll-back of the Torah to its beginning marked the 32nd anniversary of the

lay-led Shabbat Minyan service. Each week two or three volunteers lead, read from the Torah, and deliver a commentary (d’var Torah/drash) on the portion. However, services are interactive with broad participation in reading passages in both Hebrew and English, aliyot, prayers for healing, etc. The Minyan has also been the setting for life cycle events, including B'nei Mitzvot, pre-wedding ceremonies (aufrufs), and baby namings. Plus, it’s a welcoming environment to say kaddish or observe a yahrzeit. Of course, like good Jews we end with bagels and schmear, but the sweet spot is the singing, music, and special feel of the service. The setting in the Foster Family Chapel provides a casual and yet intimate space for personal and collective prayer and reflection. During Covid, the Minyan was challenged with declining in-person attendance. But now, our chairs are filling more often and we encourage you to join us at 10:30 a.m every Shabbat morning to experience the Minyan’s heart; warm, vibrant, supportive, and welcoming. Gematria interprets Hebrew words by computing the numerical value of their letters. 32 in Hebrew is ‫( ל ֵב‬lamed bet) and also means heart. 32 is a perfect number describing the Minyan’s anniversary and its essence. Why not drop by? Howard Hian co-coordinator with Gordon Glenn, Marty Stern, and Susan Zale.

Barbara was drawn by Beth Israel's warmth and familial connection, with her sister, son, and granddaughters, who are also proud members of the community. Olsen-Vazquez Family David and Manny Olsen-Vazquez, both educators residing close to Beth Israel, actively engage in the community. They're passionate about fitness, supporting marginalized groups, and share a love for streaming shows with their pets—Hope, Timmy, and Flippy. Their unique story involves a marriage at San Francisco City Hall, coinciding with the birthdays of both their mothers and the passing of both their fathers in the same year. David and Manny cherish Beth Israel's warmth, finding joy in Shabbat, Torah study, and uplifting music. Drawn by the inclusive congregation and welcoming atmosphere, they value the friendships and support from the clergy, making their membership deeply enriching. Lynn Breger Lynn Breger has actively participated in Beth Israel's community choir, contributed to this year’s Sukkah building, and engaged in Women of Beth Israel events. Her passions include garden design, volunteering at The Conrad Music Society, photography, and teaching Biotonics exercise. With a background in book publishing across London, New York, and San Francisco, Lynn's decision to become a member stems from the dynamic and engaging community she found at Beth Israel, where her contributions and talents are warmly embraced. Beck Family Jill Beck, along with her daughters Danielle, Madeline, and Olivia bring a dynamic presence to Beth Israel. Passionate about Jewish causes, Jill actively engages in the Women's Philanthropy Board at the San Diego Jewish Federation. Her diverse hobbies encompass yoga, skiing, hiking, cooking, and travel. One memorable highlight was Rabbi Nevarez officiating her daughter's wedding—an unforgettable experience. Originally from Detroit and with 25 years in Arizona, the Becks bring rich experiences to San Diego. They chose Beth Israel for its inclusive atmosphere, particularly valuing Rabbi Nevarez's role in significant life events. Eager to explore and contribute, they're excited about the possibilities at Beth Israel. Levy Family The Levy family, located in North County Inland, joins Beth Israel eagerly, focusing on engaging in tot Shabbat, special events, and the religious school. They're excited to contribute and support the community. Kara teaches kids' yoga, Jake loves science and music, and the girls thrive in dancing, yoga, and gymnastics, often staging choreographed family room performances. They share a love for adventures and movie nights, deepening their bond. At Beth Israel, they cherish the vibrant music and atmosphere, aiming to infuse their children's Jewish experience with joy. Choosing to become members was influenced by the synagogue's positive vibes and familial connections within the community. Leonard Family Meet the Leonard family—Jerry, Mandy, Bella, and Madelyn. Originally from Indiana, they now call Carmel Valley home. Their interests vary from women’s soccer to dog protection sports (Jerry's service dog is trained in explosives detection) and Mandy’s love for Bachelor/Bachelorette TV shows. Mandy's passion lies in endurance sports like Ironman, while Bella shines in high school and Del Mar Sharks soccer. Madelyn, pursuing the Junior Olympics, dominates in the swim team. Together, they form a dynamic mix of athleticism, hobbies, and family warmth. Justin Hersh and Mariel Ruiz Stasiuk Justin Hersh and Mariel Ruiz Stasiuk, residents of Little Italy, recently joined Beth Israel seeking connection and community. Justin, a former member and Beth Israel Day School student, reconnected with the synagogue alongside Mariel, captivated by the engaging Rabbis Nevarez, Gimbel, and Rabbi Cantor Berstein, finding delight in the services' harmonious and uplifting musical elements. This adventurous couple, passionate about hiking, travel, swimming, and cycling, recently tied the knot officiated by Rabbi Emeritus Michael Berk. They're thrilled to further deepen their bond with the Beth Israel community. Ronny Schwimmer Ronny Schwimmer, residing at Vi in La Jolla, moved from Long Beach to be near her son, Dr. Jeffrey Schwimmer, daughter-in-law Judybeth Tropp, and granddaughters Samantha and Melanie. Her other children and grandchildren are on the East Coast. A lifelong Dodger fan in a sea of Wave supporters in San Diego, she found a home at Beth Israel, cherishing the warmth of services, the music's beauty, and the exceptional clergy. Special memories include witnessing Samantha and Melanie grow into Bat Mitzvahs. She's delighted to be part of this special temple.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOLHappenings BETH ISRAEL HIGH SCHOOLERS IN THE 2023-2024 JEWISH TEEN FOUNDATION! We are so excited and proud to see 16 of our Beth Israel High Schoolers in the 2023-2024 Jewish Teen Foundation Cohort! The Jewish Community Foundation San Diego is excited to welcome the tenth cohort of the Jewish Teen Foundation (JTF) for the 2023-2024 school year. JTF attracts a diverse group of Jewish high school teens from San Diego County who are committed to making a difference in their community through tzedakah. Through JTF, Jewish high schoolers build new relationships, learn collaboration, and make grants with a Jewish giving lens. These teens have real responsibility to decide which organizations receive grants, likely totaling over $20,000 each year. 2023-2024 Beth Israel High Schoolers Jewish Teen Foundation Cohort: Ella Berkowitz Savion Finzi Sadie Fischer Isaac Herman

ROCK GARDEN Our brand-new kindness rock garden blossomed at the 4th-7th Grade retreat weekend in the mountains of the San Bernardino Forest and has found its forever home under the tree in the Platt Garden. We look forward to watching it continue to grow and make the world a little kinder, one message at a time.

SOCIAL JUSTICE THROUGH A JEWISH LENS What a blessing our 7th graders are to our community! Our 7th Graders taking their first semester class, “Social Justice Through A Jewish Lens,” collectively applied everything they have learned about food insecurity and hunger to an everyday trip to a grocery store. They were incredibly thoughtful about how much they had to spend, what were the most nutritious options (looking at sodium and sugar), the functionality of what they were buying for people who are living in their cars (ready-to-eat, pop-top lids, individually wrapped items, non-refrigerated), and how could they make sure they were providing people in our community with quality versus quantity through their purchases. And before leaving Beth Israel, they did a comparison of what everyone collectively purchased – paying extra attention to what they had a lot of (canned fruits and vegetables, cereals, crackers, pastas) and taking a moment to notice what was missing from their donations (dairy products, fresh produce, fresh meats). Their final collection included 263 pounds of food. 16 WINTER 2023 / 5784

PRESCHOOL

YOUNG FAMILY SHABBAT SELICHOT

Young Beth Israel families joined the clergy for a Pajama S’lichot service. Following, they enjoyed a picnic dinner.

HIGH HOLY DAYS CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS

YOUNG FAMILY SHABBAT SIMCHAT TORAH

At the Young Family Shabbat and Simchat Torah celebration, Young Families came together to revel in the joy of the Torah, dancing with excitement and rejoicing with the entire room. As the Shabbat service concluded, Rabbi Gimbel added a touch of magic, making a challah miraculously appear, leaving everyone in awe.

NOAH'S ARK CELEBRATION

Beth Israel's High Holy Days Childcare program provided care for children aged 2 to 5, with supervised activities while their older siblings and parents attended Beth Israel’s morning services. Our Children’s Program, designed for kids in Kindergarten through 2nd grade, offered age-appropriate programs and High Holy Day activities.

SUKKOT PRESCHOOL EXPERIENCE

Preschoolers helped create and decorate our Sukkah in the Price Family Courtyard. We celebrated all week—eating, singing, dancing, and hosting a special family breakfast with musician Hullabaloo for extra fun in the Sukkah.

Preschoolers, teachers, and parents dressed in Noah's Arkthemed costumes to celebrate the Torah Portion, Noach. They paraded around the Price Family Courtyard, showcasing their outfits, and gathered to hear the story of Noah. The courtyard featured various preschool activities like making rainbow bracelets, building arks with blocks, decorating rainbows with colored tissue papers, and placing animal stickers on arks.

YOUNG FAMILY SHABBAT

On the 1st Friday of the month, our young families gather in the Foster Family Chapel to sing, dance, pray, and celebrate Shabbat as a community. Our clergy and Preschool Director, Cathy, help guide our parents and youngest congregants through familiar melodies, teach new songs, and lead us in the Shabbat prayers as we conclude our week, and look forward to Shabbat and weekend ahead. We welcome you to join in the Shabbat spirit! WINTER 2023 / 5784 17
