l ISRAEL: A COMMUNITY TRIP OF A LIFETIME l OUR VERY SPECIAL VOLUNTEERS
l CARING COMMUNITY'S FILL THE FREEZER PROGRAM l DANCING WITH THE STARS
Dear Friends,
Throughout the years, I have been privileged to immerse in the land, people, and culture that is Israel. I have lived there for periods of time and have led countless trips there (always a highlight for me).
This past month, I had the opportunity to join over 50 from our Beth Israel family as part of the 220 participants from San Diego on the Federation’s CommUNITY Trip to Israel. We made Israel our home for over a week as we celebrated the modern Jewish state’s 75th birthday.
The early days of our journey were a whirlwind of powerful moments: soulful expressions of prayer; a moving ceremony in the Valley of the Communities at Yad Vashem; phenomenal culinary delights; biking the roads and narrow pathways of Jerusalem; joining thousands in peaceful protest for democracy; taking a deep dive into shared spaces doing critical work to foster bridges of understanding; uniting with my San Diego Rabbinic colleagues to lead our entire group in Kabbalat Shabbat and Havdalah. The snapshots and memories are bountiful and priceless!
One of the more powerful moments of our trip was the nearly perfect day celebrating 25 years of partnership with our friends in Sha’ar HaNegev, our sister region that sits alongside the Gaza border. Many children and adults from the region welcomed us with greater fanfare as we exited our private train. While there, we toured the border with Gaza, broke bread with host families living in border kibbutzim, and dedicated the Community Center that our San Diego community helped to build (the basketball court beautifully dedicated in Michael Jeser z‘l’s memory). To top it off, we danced the night away at a Lag B’Omer celebration.
Only a few hours later, as we settled into our hotel rooms in Tel Aviv, reflecting on the incredible day just had, Operation Shield and Arrow began. The people who had just planned our celebration shifted gears, many working through the night to safeguard the residents of Sha’ar HaNegev and evacuate and temporarily relocate nearly 2,500 residents throughout the country.
Many of us fell even more in love with Sha’ar HaNegev, which made our concern all-the-more heartbreaking. In the region, as schools canceled, roads closed, trains suspended, and residents evacuated, the situation there was a vivid reminder of the complexity of the lives of those in Sha’ar HaNegev. We know that being there with them helped to lift their spirits and give them strength.
Our experience was underscored by what many in the Sha’ar HaNegev leadership shared with us: life in Shaar Hanegev is 95% beauty and 5% terror. All of us now understand anew the multilayered reality of life in the region.
I am forever grateful to our amazing congregant, Heidi Gantwerk, President and CEO of Federation, and to her stellar team and trip co-chairs (including our own Tamar Caspi), for affording us another lens through which to see and experience Israel. I am also grateful to our Sababa Bus participants for making the experience so much fun and joyous!
I couldn’t be prouder that Beth Israel, through our various trip offerings, has sent more than 150 people to Israel this past year…and, we have more opportunities in store!
If you are interested in learning about the next opportunity? Embark on a life-changing inter-generational congregational trip to Israel with your whole family next summer, led by myself and Rabbi Gimbel, June 16-26, 2024.
Our Family Trip will take us to some of the most fascinating and historic locations in Israel. We will provide insights and teachings that will deepen your understanding and appreciation of Israel's complex history and vibrant culture. We'll also have plenty of time for reflection and personal growth, as well as opportunities to form lifelong bonds with fellow travelers.

Welcome to Summer! Of course, I write this to you in the early days of May as we come through the end of a very wet and cold (by San Diego standards) Spring. I’m hopeful that our grey days are behind us, and we are all enjoying the benefits of our “sunshine tax” living here in beautiful San Diego.
Back in January, I had the opportunity to attend a Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) conference for “large” Reform Synagogues. It was an interesting and eye-opening experience to meet and collaborate with Executive Directors, Senior Rabbis, and other Board Presidents from like-sized congregations from across the United States. We were invited to this conference, not because of the qualities or skills that Lesley Mills, Rabbi Nevarez and I possess, but because of all you – our Membership. We are a “large” Reform Synagogue, because of our incredible membership. The attendees of the conference came from all different walks of life, but had strong commonalities, concerns, and challenges. I was sorry to hear about congregations that were struggling with a search for identity, though I was pleased to share that we were not. I offered advice and counsel where I could and was (hopefully) qualified to, when I heard about staffing challenges with senior staff. And when we talked about the challenges of growing membership but decreasing membership revenue, I felt bolstered to face the challenge and empowered to hear that we were not alone. We undertook an interesting exercise in which we looked towards the far future of worldwide Jewry. As we imagined a future in which much more had changed then stayed the same, the one common conclusion that we came to was that the Jewish people would survive and there would and should always be a need for a central Jewish address – the synagogue. Why did we think that? Because for thousands of years–despite the trials and tribulations of our history--we have always had synagogues because we needed them to exist.
For our Beth Israel community, this time of year has two very important occurrences: the beginning of our new fiscal year and Membership Renewal Season. Why are these so important to our community? Our annual operating budget goes into effect at the beginning of each fiscal year and is literally the mechanism by which our synagogue functions. The creation, vetting, and implementation of this budget keeps our lights on, our doors open, and pays our talented staff and clergy. The funds that are promised by our membership during Membership Renewal comprise 33% of our overall revenue. These contributions are the driving force in our financial stability and sustainability – and for that, I thank you.
But I’ve asked this question before, and I will ask it again and again: Is our only aspiration to sustain? From my conversations and experiences with so many of you – I don’t think so. We don’t hope that when we come on campus, we can throw the switch and just have the lights come on in our Sanctuary. We hope that those lights shine bright and true and make us a beacon for Reform Judaism in San Diego.
A synagogue is not complete when the building is finished. It is not complete when the staff is hired. The very idea of a synagogue is that it is never completed – it must always grow and evolve with the needs of its people. Our greater North American Jewish community is blessed with an alphabet soup of wonderful Jewish organizations working on a myriad of causes and missions. These organizations benefit from strong fundraising and community support. At times, and I have certainly felt this way, we seem to be solicited at every turn. An appeal by one may be jockeying for “market share” over another, and thus we
address – the synagogue.
may try to create a hierarchy of need when we think about our charitable giving. But the success of these organizations is built on the bedrock of the teachings and values of our people. Without strong synagogues, we lose that central location where Jews are raised, values are instilled, education is imparted, and lifecycle events are based. For the past two years, you’ve heard me talk about strategy and its importance. Tactics, the way in which we conduct our operations in the moment, are what keep us going. Strategy is a medium-term tool to drive success. But as you consider what you can do this year with your Membership Commitment, I ask you to look beyond tactics and strategy with me and think about what we need in the long term – and that my friends, is vision. The vision to think about the future of Beth Israel. Not just for ourselves, but for those who come after us. So many have put forth so much to help us get to where we are today. Their work may be done, but ours is not.
For those of you who are already giving what you can, I thank you. I hope that contribution is meaningful to you and not one that creates an economic hardship. For those of you who may have the capacity to give more, I respectfully ask you to consider doing so. If each of us was to increase our annual commitment by even 15%, it would make a significant difference to our operations. An increase of 15-25% gives us the capacity to be aspirational in our ideas and planning for the future. A strong community does not wait for others to lift it up – it must lift itself up.
It is only with your support and commitment that we can turn our vision of the future into a reality.
Respectfully submitted,
Dan Jones, PresidentAs we imagined a future in which much more had changed then stayed the same, the one common conclusion that we came to was that the Jewish people would survive and there would and should always be a need for a central Jewish
The Holocaust Memorial ceremony held on April 18 was a deeply moving and solemn event dedicated to remembering and honoring the millions of innocent lives lost during one of history's darkest chapters. Attendees from diverse backgrounds came together to pay tribute, guided by clergy, participants, the Beth Israel Adult Choir, the Youth & Teen Choir, and musicians.
The lighting of the six memorial candles served as a powerful symbol of remembrance for the Holocaust victims. Rabbi Jack Romberg, an esteemed guest speaker, delivered a poignant address that underscored the struggles of Jewish families and those who suffered and were persecuted during this horrific period.
A particularly meaningful moment during the ceremony was the special dedication of the Holocaust Czech Survivor Scroll. On loan from the Memorial Scrolls Trust, this scroll served as a tangible reminder of the Jewish people's resilience. Ruth Weiss Hohberg, a Shoah survivor, eloquently spoke about the significance of giving the sacred scroll a safe home in Beth Israel, representing its rightful place in Jewish life, rituals, and beliefs.
Addison Callahan shared her essay, which was submitted to the Yom HaShoah Inaugural Holocaust Essay Writing Contest. The contest featured essays written by students in grades 8 to 12, under the
guidance of Beth Israel's Holocaust Remembrance Task Force.
The event concluded with a moment of hope as participants gathered outside to light memorial candles provided by the Men’s Club in memory of those who were lost and in honor of the Holocaust survivors. The singing of Hatikvah by everyone created a powerful atmosphere, encouraging reflection on the past, paying homage to the memories of the victims, and recommitting to the important task of ensuring that such atrocities are never repeated.
We were thrilled to have hosted Yom HaAtzmaut and Israel's 75th anniversary at our Erev Shabbat Services on April 21st. The evening was filled with unity and inspiration as the Beth Israel community came together to immerse themselves in Israeli culture and honor this significant milestone. We were privileged to have Deputy Consul General Amit Mekel from the Consulate General of Israel in Los Angeles join us, bringing his presence and participating in our festivities.
Following the uplifting services, the celebration continued with an Israeli-themed Oneg. The atmosphere was vibrant as we engaged in spirited Israeli dancing led by the talented Michelle McGrath.
During this momentous occasion, we took the opportunity to extend a heartfelt blessing to the nearly
50 Beth Israel members who embarked on the San Diego CommUNITY trip to Israel in May of 2023. Their journey undoubtedly deepened their connection to the land and people of Israel, amplifying the significance of this celebration. Additionally, we honored our dedicated graduates of the Introduction to Judaism class, acknowledging their unwavering commitment to learning and personal growth.
The evening was an extraordinary blend of prayer, community, and celebration as we rejoiced in Yom HaAtzmaut and commemorated Israel's 75th anniversary. The memories we shared will continue to inspire and fortify our bonds as a community, and we eagerly anticipate future celebrations that embody the enduring spirit and resilience of Israel.
On June 3, more than 300 people gathered for our Annual Fundraiser, Dancing with the Stars of Beth Israel. After enjoying signature cocktails and a delicious dinner, guests were treated to an amazing performance featuring six Beth Israel dancers and their professional partners. From the Tango to Swing dancing and the Cha Cha, the dancers dazzled us with their moves and brought down the house. The Mirror Ball Trophy was awarded to the crowd favorites, Becca Myers and Raphael Stigliano. Thank you to all who attended and to all who helped to make the evening a huge success!
Kimberly Carnot and her wife, Traci Carpenter, joined Beth Israel in 2010 after relocating from Alaska in 2007. An attorney, she has negotiated business contracts and advised senior leadership across most of the San Diego higher education institutions (UC San Diego, University of San Diego, San Diego State University) over the past 15 years. She currently serves as Senior Legal Counsel at Sharp HealthCare. In addition to expertise in transactions, her portfolio includes extensive experience in construction, real estate, facilities management along with organization planning, operational efficiency and change management. Kimberly also served on the board of directors for Hillel of San Diego and is a former board member of Jewish Family Service.
A native of Maryland, Kimberly received her Bachelors from Washington University in Saint Louis, and her Juris Doctorate and Masters of Studies in Environmental Law from Vermont Law School. She is licensed to practice law in California, Maryland and Alaska. Kimberly and Traci, along with their children, Emma and Harley, who attend Beth’s Israel’s Religious School, live in Del Mar. Kimberly is a 4th generation member of Beth Israel.
On May 18th, Beth Israel held its Annual Meeting of the Congregation. The event featured several highlights, including a warm welcome and blessing, insightful remarks from President Dan Jones, Treasurer John Lefter, and Senior Rabbi Jason Nevarez. The meeting also recognized retiring Board members and conducted elections for the Board and Nominating Committee. Additionally, the Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to JOHN LEFTER, JANET PERLMAN, and LORI SHEARER, acknowledging their outstanding contributions.

The President's Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) recognizes incredible individuals who are committed to a high level of volunteer and service. These individuals work tirelessly to help solve some of the toughest challenges facing our community. To qualify for the 5783 PVSA, some of our amazing teens donated their time as madrichim in our Religious School, ran food distribution events, helped with community cleanups, taught environmental conservation programs, coached sporting events for athletes with special needs, baked food for and delivered Mish Bags for Beth Israel's Caring Community, and organized collections for food, school supplies, and hygiene products.... and so much more! Combined, these volunteers contributed over 2,100 hours of their time to make our world a more beautiful and connected place.

Make a meaningful membership commitment to your Beth Israel family.
VIBRANT. EMPOWERING. UPLIFTING. Passing on traditions and teachings to future generations. Dedicated to enhancing the lives of those it touches.
CARING. ACTIVE. INVOLVED. Taking steps to aid those in need from every walk of life. Nurturing personal growth. As Moses asked each individual to contribute toward building the tabernacle according to their own ability, we ask YOU to help sustain and support Beth Israel in a manner that is meaningful to YOU.
I joined Beth Israel with my parents, Karen & Si Coleman, and my brother when we moved to San Diego in 1972. I grew up in the Madrichim program and was a song leader after I completed my bat mitzvah. After college, I returned to San Diego where I married Mike. We are blessed to have our girls, Emily and Kate, participate to their fullest at Beth Israel. Both of our girls became bat mitzvah, were in the Madrichim program and are now doing what they love most, playing in the Tizmoret band under the guidance of Rabbi Cantor Bernstein. Some of our longest and strongest friendships started at this temple. There is a strong sense of belonging here for our family. I know our girls are building lifelong relationships while developing a strong sense of Jewish identity and confidence. I have many favorite experiences over my 45 years at Beth Israel, best are of being at Hebrew Camp. -Stacey Coleman & Mike Chasin

Residing in the vibrant UTC area, just a stone's throw away from Beth Israel, they are eager to connect with other families and engage in various community events. Embracing an active lifestyle, the Shulmans relish the outdoors and frequently embark on refreshing walks. When they are not exploring nature, they find solace in the kitchen, indulging in their shared passion for cooking. One intriguing fact about them is that they exchanged their vows at a beautiful castle in 2021, adding a touch of enchantment to their love story. Their initial experiences with Beth Israel have left a lasting impression as they were warmly welcomed by the community. Having attended outdoor services in the past, Julie and Sam were captivated by the sense of belonging they felt. With their proximity to the synagogue and their daughter set to start at the esteemed Bill and Sid Rubin Infant Center, they decided it was the perfect time to formally join Beth Israel. Additionally, they are excited to celebrate Norah's baby naming ceremony within the supportive embrace of the congregation. The Shulmans are grateful for the opportunity to embark on this meaningful journey with Beth Israel and eagerly anticipate the friendships and memories that await them.
Adam, Natalie, Eloise and Aaron Sinkoff
Adam Sinkoff, together with his wife Natalie and their two adorable children, Eloise (2 years old) and Aaron (1 year old), are delighted to embark on their journey as members of the Beth Israel community. Residing in the vibrant University City, the Sinkoff family is eager to actively engage in the offerings of Beth Israel. With a deep passion for travel, Natalie, who is a flight attendant, brings a unique perspective to their family dynamic. An interesting tidbit about them is that Aaron carries the name of his beloved greatgrandfather, honoring their family heritage. One aspect that has already captured their hearts is the Young Family Shabbat, an inclusive and engaging program that resonates with their family values. This enchanting experience led them to choose Beth Israel as their spiritual home. The Sinkoff family is thrilled to have found a warm and welcoming community that will undoubtedly enrich their lives and provide a nurturing environment for their children to grow and thrive.
Nicole, Eric and Asher Blumenfeld
Nicole, Eric, and their adorable son Asher are excited to join the vibrant Beth Israel community. Hailing from Chicago, they have called San Diego home for nearly a decade. Residing in the Clairemont area, the Blumenfelds are eager to connect with other families who have children of similar ages. They are looking forward to participating in various community events, including joyous Shabbat dinners and engaging social programs. As Asher is enrolled in the esteemed infant care program at the Bill and Sid preschool, they hope to explore additional opportunities that align with their growing family. Outside of their involvement at Beth Israel, Eric's passion for music shines through his talent as a piano player, performing as one of the dueling piano players at the Shout House in the Gaslamp. Nicole has discovered a love for plants and enjoys creating beautiful succulent arrangements. Adding a touch of charm to their household, they have two lovable long-haired dachshunds. The warm and welcoming nature of the Beth Israel community has already left a lasting impression on the Blumenfelds. From the friendly people they've met to the immediate sense of belonging, they are grateful for the warm embrace they have experienced. Their decision to become members of Beth Israel stems from a desire to provide Asher with a nurturing community as he grows up while also seeking opportunities to expand their social circles. The Blumenfeld family is eager to become more engaged in the community and is grateful for the opportunity to embark on this new chapter of their lives with Beth Israel.
Linda Abarbanell
Linda Abarbanell, a professor of psychology at SDSU, is excited to join the Beth Israel community to connect with others and deepen her understanding of Judaism. Residing in Banker's Hill, Linda's passions extend beyond academia. She conducts captivating fieldwork along the US-Mexico border and in a Mayan community, speaks multiple languages, and engages in activities like running, playing musical instruments, and creating textile art. She cares deeply about environmental and human rights issues. Linda discovered Beth Israel during the pandemic, attended online High Holiday services, and was drawn in by engaging Torah study sessions. She quickly felt part of a valued community, prompting her to become a member and support its growth.
Heather Ray
Heather Ray, a San Diego native, is thrilled to be part of the vibrant Beth Israel community. As a proud auntie to three adorable nieces and the daughter of Dr. Albert Ray, a long-standing figure at Beth Israel, Heather is deeply rooted in her Jewish heritage. Living in the Marina District, she looks forward to engaging in meaningful experiences within the Beth Israel community, including classes, holiday celebrations, and text study. Heather's passions lie in the arts, with a profound appreciation for creating and experiencing various forms of art. She is a self-proclaimed foodie who frequents the Little Italy Farmers Market and loves exploring hidden culinary gems. Additionally, she enjoys leisurely walks, soaking in the sights of the beautiful city. Heather has a strong connection to Beth Israel, having celebrated her Bat Mitzvah there and sharing fond memories of Rabbi Stein 2.0 during her time at Temple Shaaray Tefila in New York City. One aspect she already loves about Beth Israel is its rich history and esteemed reputation as a respected congregation in San Diego and beyond. Heather's decision to become a member stems from her profound connection to Rabbi Nevarez's leadership and teachings, reminiscent of the bond she formed with Rabbi Strom, a close friend from her past. Grateful for the warm welcome back into this vibrant and dynamic cultural epicenter, Heather is honored to be part of the Beth Israel community once again.
Tom and Dorcey Rose, an adventurous couple driven by their love for their Jewish heritage, recently relocated to La Jolla Village in January 2023. Formerly residing in Annapolis, they have a strong connection to their daughter Hannah, son-in-law Stephen, and grandchildren Irene and Isaiah, who still live near their previous hometown. Meanwhile, their son Aaron and his girlfriend Neung have made their home in Bangkok, where Aaron teaches English. In their new coastal setting, Dorcey finds joy in swimming at the nearby Coggan Pool, while Tom indulges in his passion for rowing at the San Diego Rowing Club. Together, they embrace the beauty of their surroundings, taking leisurely walks along the Ocean Walk and exploring the city on electric bikes. As retired professionals, Tom brings his expertise as a sociology professor, while Dorcey draws from her experience as a former psychotherapist in private practice. Both share a keen interest in Jewish Genealogy. Their love for Beth Israel began with engaging Torah Study sessions, which seamlessly transitioned to online platforms. Presently, they eagerly participate in Friday night services, captivated by the soul-stirring melodies that resonate within their hearts. Tom and Dorcey Rose have discovered a renewed sense of belonging within the warm embrace of Beth Israel as they embark on this new chapter in La Jolla Village.

Dr. Alfredo Jalowayski and Irene Jalowayski are grateful members of Beth Israel.
Matthew, Heather and Finnley Eisenberg
Matthew and Heather Eisenberg, along with their son Finnley and adorable mini Goldendoodle Ollie, are thrilled to be part of the Beth Israel community. Residing in UTC/La Jolla, they are eager to engage in activities geared towards young families and attend Tot Shabbat. Their passions include sailing, beach outings, hiking, playground adventures, and culinary delights. An interesting fact about their family is that Matthew jokingly predicted that their first child would have to be a boy to carry on the Eisenberg name, and Finnley fulfilled that prophecy. One thing they already love about Beth Israel is the strong sense of community, as when dropping Finnley off, it feels like leaving him with an extended family. They became members in order to join and explore the Jewish faith and are excited to make new connections and forge lasting friendships.
Daniel, Veronica, Natalia and Mikel Poplawsky
Daniel Poplawsky, along with his wife Veronica and their children Natalia and Mikel, are excited to join the Beth Israel community. They love the musical aspect of the Shabbat service and the sense of community at Beth Israel. As new residents of San Diego, they are eager to be part of the Jewish community, share Jewish values, and expand their social circle.
Lisa Rothstein Goldberg, Rachel, Molly and Matt Goldberg
Lisa Rothstein Goldberg and Matt Goldberg, along with their daughters Rachel and Molly, recently moved from Louisville, KY, to Tierrasanta in San Diego. They are thrilled to be part of the Beth Israel community, seeking an active Jewish community with excellent learning and social opportunities for all ages. Their girls love religious school, reflecting the positive experiences they've had so far. Lisa is a rabbinical student interning at Hillel of San Diego, while Matt works for Jewish Federation. They are passionate about building a welcoming Jewish community, enjoy watching shows like Succession and Ted Lasso, and share a love for Jeopardy. Helene Schlafman, known affectionately as Eemah (mom), started the Madrichim program 52 years ago at Beth Israel. Thousands of students have passed through the Madrichim program over the past five decades and have gone on to become Rabbis, lay leaders, and active participants in their own congregational communities, bringing with them all of the ruach and passion they developed as Madrichim.
Our documentary "Our Madrichim Story: 50+ Years" highlights teen engagement and participation in our classrooms, during our camp weekends, and through Eemah's Hebrew Helpers.
