HIGH HOLY DAYS ISSUE & ANNUAL REVIEW

RABBI’S
By Senior Rabbi Jason Nevarez
RABBI’S
By Senior Rabbi Jason NevarezDear Friends,
I hope you have had a fulfilling summer season. For Rabbis throughout the world, this time affords us a bit of respite in anticipation of the new year and all that comes along with it. Personally, it has allowed me moments of deep introspection, as I wrestle with the messages that resound all around us at present.
As we approach the New Year of 5784, I am mindful that there is no shortage of news, issues, and causes in which we can choose to lay our focus. At times, it can feel overwhelming, even daunting. Fortunately, the sacred season of the High Holy Days is upon us – this time of introspection, renewal, and deep spiritual significance. In these moments, our tradition invites us to lean into the profound teachings and timeless wisdom that guide us during this period of selfexamination and repentance to help us navigate and make sense of all that spirals around us, on this journey we call life.
These approaching days offer us opportunities to assess our actions, mend broken relationships and reconnect with the people, community, and Divine Presence that surrounds us. Just as the shofar's resonant call stirs our souls, these days beckon us to awaken our innermost selves.
This year at Beth Israel, your clergy are inviting each of us to “Awaken to Community. Awaken to Possibility.” This powerful theme will be threaded throughout our services and help guide our shared moments together. Specifically, as we AWAKEN TO COMMUNITY, let us be ever mindful of the power of coming together. Just as each instrument
in an orchestra contributes to the symphony's beauty, so do we, with our unique strengths and voices, create the harmonious melody of our congregation. Together, we reflect and repent, and renew our bonds in order to focus on the sacred work ahead of us.
As we AWAKEN TO POSSIBILITY, we will heed the words of Torah and our sages and let the piercing sounds of the shofar awaken us to
stand up against the ills of oppression and prejudice and strengthen our contributions to the betterment of our local and global communities in whatever ways we are able.
As the shofar's echoes resound, may they awaken our spirits to the possibilities that lie ahead. May we emerge from this sacred season with renewed purpose, carrying the lessons of introspection and atonement with us as we navigate the tapestry of life.
L'shanah tovah tikatevu – may you be inscribed for a good year, a year of blessing, fulfillment, and meaning. May the High Holy Days inspire us all to embrace the journey of self-discovery and transformation, allowing our souls to soar to new heights of understanding and love.
I look forward to seeing all of you over these Days of Awe!
This year at Beth Israel, your clergy are inviting each of us to “Awaken to Community. Awaken to Possibility.”
Hello friends!
I hope everyone has had an excellent Summer.
I’d like to start off by thanking so many of you for stepping up for our annual membership renewal. The contributions and generosity of you, our membership, are the beginning of everything we do and can accomplish. Membership commitments at the sustaining level allow us to continue our current level of operations in a fiscally responsible way. That sustaining amount is a real number based on a careful calculation to meet our financial needs. We don’t yet exist in a reality where all our members can contribute at that level, but as a hypothetical - if all our membership were to give at least at the sustaining level, it would not only cover our operational costs, but help us to better position ourselves for growth. The contributions of so many of you help make that possible.
We’ve had a busy and exciting 5783 at Beth Israel: the renewal of two of our Rabbis’ contracts, the announcement of the transition (in July of 2024) of our beloved Rabbi/Cantor Arlene Bernstein to Rabbi/Cantor Emerita, the rollout of our Seven Strategic Commitments, the beginning of efforts to hire a new Assistant Rabbi, and most recently the announcement that Rabbi Jeremy Gimbel will assume the role of Rabbi/Cantor in July of 2024. Many of our accomplishments and achievements this year were possible because of our excellent governance structure and practices.
Governance is "the process of decision-making and the process by which decisions are implemented (or not implemented)". The leadership at Beth Israel believes that an organization that uses good governance is one that always, in word and action, demonstrates: accountability; leadership; integrity; stewardship; and transparency. Our governance model is led by our “three-legged stool,”: our Executive Director, our Senior Rabbi, and our President of our Board of Directors. This model of shared executive power is one that is time tested and successful at Beth Israel and serves as a positive example to other synagogues. Our Board of Directors is vested with the management and control of affairs, records, funds and other property of the Congregation, unless otherwise specifically set forth in our By-Laws. Our Board President (till next May, yours truly) assembles an Executive Committee to advise them, the Senior Rabbi, the Executive Director, and the Board. The Executive Committee consists of elected officers, the Immediate Past President and such other Congregation members as the President may designate. It’s through the work of the “three-legged stool”, the Board, and the advice of the Executive Committee that the major decisions around our synagogue’s operations and its future are made.
I encourage you to offer your appreciation to the lay leaders who contribute their time and knowledge to these efforts. It is no small responsibility that these volunteers take on. Most serve for at least
3 years and some up to 12. They help lead our committees, our auxiliaries, and our task forces. Based on the level of participation I see from our lay leaders, I know (and hope) they find their work fulfilling and compelling. As Jews, we are meant to go through life actively looking for Mitzvot (good deeds) that we can undertake. Becoming a lay leader in our congregation is not a Mitzvot you need to hunt for; that opportunity is waiting for you. People often reference the “three T’s” that non-profits are looking for: Time, Talent, and Treasure. In the lay leadership of Beth Israel, our focus is on best leveraging the time and talent of our volunteers (but if you offer “treasure” as well, we won’t turn you down!).
As you may have heard from me before, earlier in my life I never imagined myself as a lay leader in a synagogue; but now, having been strongly engaged in it for the past eight years, I can’t imagine a reality where I would not be involved. It is fulfilling in both obvious and subtle ways to give back to and help sustain our piece of the greater Jewish community. I encourage and invite you to join me and find your own path and journey as a Beth Israel lay leader. Raise your hand and be recognized.
I hope you’re interested – you know where to find me if you are: djones@cbisd.org
If you have further interest in our Governance practices, I invite you to head to our website www.cbisd.org and look under “About Us” where you will find our bylaws. Like any responsible organization, our bylaws are reviewed periodically to assure continued relevance, applicability, and prudence. Such a review is going on now.
Looking ahead to the High Holy Days, as I do every year, I am looking forward to seeing and reconnecting with all of you as we come together to observe and celebrate the Days of Awe. Many of us also take them as an opportunity to re-connect with fellow members in our physical spiritual home – our beautiful Beth Israel campus. Whether you’ve been to Beth Israel a hundred times this year, or if this will be your first time, I look forward to seeing you and being in community with you.
Be well,
Dan JonesThe leadership at Beth Israel believes that an organization that uses good governance is one that always, in word and action, demonstrates: accountability; leadership; integrity; stewardship; and transparency.
You know those moments when someone comes into your life and gives you a message, right at the moment you needed it? I had one of those moments at a concert.
The opening act was this group, “Switchfoot.” And during one of the songs, the lead singer jumped down off the stage, and started singing the refrain of the song while he high-fived everyone in the crowd. I was so mesmerized, so caught up by the showmanship, all I heard in the moment was the melody, almost like a niggun.
When I went home, I found the song online. This time, without the distractions of the concert venue, I really listened to the lyrics:
Yesterday is a wrinkle on your forehead
Yesterday is a promise that you've broken
D on't close your eyes, don't close your eyes
T his is your life and today is all you've got now
Yeah, and today is all you'll ever have
D on't close your eyes
D on't close your eyes
T his is your life, are you who you want to be?
T his is your life, are you who you want to be?
T his is your life, is it everything you dreamed that it would be?
W hen the world was younger and you had everything to lose
What a powerful message. I kept thinking about that question: This is my life - am I who I want to be? Then I realized the date. The concert had been on S’lichot, the service held on the Saturday night before Rosh Hashanah which marks a beginning of the period of reflection leading into the High Holidays. I felt like our ancestor Jacob, waking from his sleep and stating aloud God was in this place, and I did not know it. At any other time of year, this would have been a nice reminder to myself to reflect. But something pulled me to really hear this message, a message which would prepare me for the High Holidays.
If the High Holidays have one theme, it is that we reflect — on our lives, on our actions, on our relationships — and we begin to engage in teshuvah: acts of repentance, atonement, and healing.
As we approach the High Holiday season, let us embrace the concept of "cheshbon hanefesh" - an introspective self-accounting. Just as Switchfoot’s message resonated with me at that concert, we all have moments that awaken us to our own truths. It is easy to get caught up in our lives, but we must not close our eyes to the profound question: "This is your life - are you who you want to be?"
S'lichot, with its timing on the cusp of Rosh Hashanah, serves as a gentle reminder of the opportunity for reflection and transformation. Like Jacob, let us awaken to the presence of divinity in our lives. The High Holidays provide a sacred space for us to examine our past choices, mend broken relationships, and
chart a course toward personal growth and communal righteousness.
Let us embrace this season with open hearts and minds, embracing the opportunity for self-discovery, renewal, and reconciliation. May the theme of cheshbon hanefesh guide us on a transformative journey, leading us towards a life of purpose, compassion, and fulfillment. As we embark on this sacred journey, may we find the courage to face ourselves honestly, make amends, and strive for growth. This is the time to reconnect with
our true essence and realign our paths with our deepest values.
Whether we hear the melodies of prayers, engage in acts of kindness, or listen to the piercing sound of the shofar, we are urged to confront the question: "This is your life - are you who you want to be?”
are you who you want to
Let us embrace this season with open hearts and minds, embracing the opportunity for self-discovery, renewal, and reconciliation.

AT BETH ISRAEL
As the warm rays of the summer sun bathed the Beth Israel community, an array of enriching and joyous events unfolded, bringing people together in celebration and unity. From Erev Shabbat Services to family-oriented fun and educational festivities, the summer at Beth Israel was truly a season to remember.
Shabbat Under the Stars, our signature outdoor service in the Price Family Courtyard, combined the tranquility of the evening with soul-stirring melodies of prayers filling the air. It brought congregants together for a unique and ethereal experience. Our hearts were lifted in prayer, and a sense of togetherness enveloped the gathering. Family Movie Night sponsored by Women’s of Beth Israel featured "The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (2023) on our GIANT screen. With families snuggled in cozy blankets enjoying pizza and dessert, the night was filled with non-stop adventure and laughter. Kids of all ages had a blast, and it was wonderful to see the community come together for this FREE and open event. Thanks to the gracious underwriting by Treger Strasberg, the movie night was an unforgettable summer highlight at Beth Israel.
Beth Israel's commitment to diversity and inclusivity shone brightly during a series of Pride events, Poster & Shirt Making Party for San Diego Pride Parade, Pride Shabbat, and Pride Parade. A vibrant celebration of love painted a colorful canvas of acceptance and understanding. These events were a beautiful expression of love and respect for all members of the community. As the summer unfolded, Tribe Adults 20s-40s Oneg gatherings provided a platform for like-minded individuals to connect, share experiences, and engage in meaningful discussions. Amidst laughter, heartfelt conversations, and delicious treats, strong bonds were formed, creating a support network with new and old friends that extended beyond the summer months.
Netanya has been a member of Beth Israel since 2003. Both her kids experienced almost all that the religious school and Beth Israel offered throughout their childhood, from Tot Shabbat to their B’nei Mitzvah to the Platt Israel Trip. After her own adult Bat Mitzvah in 2006, she joined the Outreach committee, chairing it for two years. Additionally, she is on the Social Action Committee and the Tribe Committee. Netanya can be seen in the sanctuary most Erev Shabbat services, and the monthly Shira Hadasha service is her favorite. She enjoys the many diverse programs and activities offered at Beth Israel. Outside of Beth Israel, she is on the steering committee of a local Indivisible group, a loose network of progressive democrats, where, as Program Director for many years, she ensured the monthly meetings had speakers of all likes to learn with and to learn from.
For work, Netanya is a commercial real estate broker. Rabbi Berk officiated at her wedding with Karl, who was her partner in raising her kids as his own. They are now enjoying life as empty nesters, with both kids out of college and on their own. With 4 elderly pets to care for, they stick close to home, enjoying riding their electric bikes and seeing the Padres play.
“2023 SD Pride was one for the books! One of the best prides EVER! We literally showed up just to march in the parade and spent a couple hours at the festival and then we went home. This is very much unlike other years where we party from Thursday to Monday. I guess we are getting older. What made this year so special was marching with CBI! I had a tough choice between marching with my employer ASML, or CBI. We of course chose CBI. These folks are like extended family! It means the world to be accepted and even celebrated for who we are, as well as for our love and marriage (for which we are so blessed to have been married under the Chupa at CBI). Rick and I have both experienced discrimination throughout our lives for being LGBT, so things like this erase all those bad memories as we create new ones that bring so much joy to our lives. PRIDE is just another way to celebrate LIFE and no better way to do this than with our Jewish family! Marching forward down that parade route reminds me of one of my favorite Jewish sayings: LECH LECHA! Go FORTH!”

From the very start, they felt welcomed and embraced by Rabbi Nevarez and the Beth Israel staff. Our community's kindness and openness left a lasting impression. They're also excited about Beth Israel's strong ties to the San Diego community. With Andrea's recent conversion to Judaism and Brian's connection to Rabbi Brad Levenberg, their decision to become part of Beth Israel was a natural fit. Already falling in love with Beth Israel, the Ophirs cherish the warm and welcoming atmosphere that surrounds them. The Beth Israel welcoming and loving community has already made them feel right at home. Lee and Frank Goldberg Religious School prides itself on being a warm, welcoming community for our students to learn and grow with one another. As our students venture out after high school, we enjoy hearing from many of them about how their time at
Beth Israel has influenced their values, college majors, friendships, and beyond. One of the most special l’dor v’dor, from generation to generation, parts of our school is that many of our students come back as teachers. Each year, approximately half of our Religious School staff team is comprised of graduates of our Religious School and madrichim (teen teaching assistant) programs. This school year is no exception and among our returning students who are here as staff is a sibling trio. Emory, Andrew, and Ziggy Valdez will all be a part of the team that helps ensure a positive experience for families in our school. Emory, a high school student who continues to take initiative as a leader, will be our Lead Office Madricha (assistant). Andrew will be co-teaching with another graduate of our program; a team that has been together since Andrew was a madrich (assistant) in high school. Ziggy will be bringing the flavors of the Jewish calendar to life in our holiday cooking class for upper elementary school students. In sharing about his excitement for the upcoming school year and working alongside his siblings,
Andrew said, "Beth Israel had always been a very supportive place for me and my siblings. We had moved around a lot during the early parts of our lives, coming back to San Diego and the Beth Israel community around 2015. But both times, the community was super welcoming. My favorite part of going to Religious School was actually being a madrich and BITY Board because I was able to give back to the community that had supported me for so long. Working with my siblings is honestly really fun because when we would see each other in passing either in the office or in the hallways we'd be able to joke around and help each other if the other needed something."
Beth Israel’s Religious School team is proud to watch graduates of the Religious School teach the lessons that they learned, in new and innovative ways, to the next generation of students. The example that our graduates set of being true mensches as they come give back to their community is a very special lesson that only they can come back and impart.
This summer, 35 of our rising B'nei Mitzvah students were able to come together for two weeks of B'nei Mitzvah Boot Camp! During their time together, campers had the opportunity to learn with our clergy, experience programming led by our religious school staff partnering with Moving Traditions, build amazing friendships - in and out of the classroom, and participate in daily community service projects with local nonprofit organizations. Campers use this opportunity not just to practice and prepare for leading services, but to think about what it means to be a service leader, how to cultivate an attitude of gratitude, and what becoming an adult (and a teenager!) means to each of them. Our Beth Israel community is endlessly blessed to have another season of these campers preparing to become B'nei Mitzvah!
Playing outdoors just got a little better at the Bill and Sid Rubin Preschool! Thanks to a government grant, a new Pour N’ Play surface was added to the toddler and preschool playgrounds. This Pour N’ Play surface provides a soft, cushioned surface for outdoor exploration. The surface is long lasting and favorable for children and adults with mobility challenges. Natural colors were chosen to complement the current outdoor spaces. Outdoor play is beneficial for children beyond the physical activity it provides. It helps children socialize, understand their bodies better, engage in imaginative play, and build a connection with nature. One of the best benefits of outdoor play is that it provides an opportunity for children to learn how to engage with others while having fun. The unstructured nature of outdoor play helps children expand their creativity and hone their social skills. Our amazing San Diego weather is optimal for outdoor play year around. The Bill and Sid Rubin Preschool’s philosophy incorporates socialemotional learning, a love of nature, and imaginative play. From our youngest learners to our pre-kindergarten class, all ages spend much of their day outside. The Pour N’ Play surface promises to help them run faster, jump higher, and land safely.
Our Beth Israel’s Bill and Sid Rubin Preschool opened their doors for our Early Childhood Education Camp and Tuesdays in the Park. The ECE Summer Camp was a magical gateway to a world of imagination, laughter, and discovery for our younger students. Within its safe and nurturing environment, children explored their creativity, forged friendships, and embraced their Jewish heritage. Engaging storytelling sessions ignited young minds, arts and crafts adorned the camp with colorful creations, and plenty of outdoor games and activities made it a delightful summer adventure. Tuesdays in the Park brought the community together, sparking laughter, camaraderie, and connections. From a magician show to foam parties and live performances by San Diego's famous Ruth and Emilia and Kathryn the Great, families of all ages enjoyed our own Beth Israel park and playground bonding over friendly games and heartfelt conversations. These events provided families with opportunities to socialize and make friends, fostering a strong sense of belonging within our community.
Make a meaningful membership commitment to your Beth Israel family.
Passing on traditions and teachings to future generations. Dedicated to enhancing the lives of those it touches.
Taking steps to aid those in need from every walk of life. Nurturing personal growth. As Moses asked each individual to contribute toward building the tabernacle according to their own ability, we ask YOU to help sustain and support Beth Israel in a manner that is meaningful to YOU.
I joined Beth Israel with my parents, Karen & Si Coleman, and my brother when we moved to San Diego in 1972. I grew up in the Madrichim program and was a song leader after I completed my bat mitzvah. After college, I returned to San Diego where I married Mike. We are blessed to have our girls, Emily and Kate, participate to their fullest at Beth Israel. Both of our girls became bat mitzvah, were in the Madrichim program and are now doing what they love most, playing in the Tizmoret band under the guidance of Rabbi Cantor Bernstein. Some of our longest and strongest friendships started at this temple. There is a strong sense of belonging here for our family. I know our girls are building lifelong relationships while developing a strong sense of Jewish identity and confidence. I have many favorite experiences over my 45 years at Beth Israel, best are of being at Hebrew Camp.
Your kindness and caring envelopes me and Herb. The delicious foods, face mask, shabbat candles, and most of all, your loving thoughts are appreciated beyond words. With abundant thanks!
Our vibrant Beth Israel's youth embarked on an unforgettable journey at Camp Mountain Chai during the summer. These young members had their most exceptional summer season yet, coming together with fellow campers to create memories, canoeing and kayaking across pristine waters, conquering the ropes course with determination, perfecting their aim in archery, scaling the climbing wall, and taking refreshing dips in the pool. Hiking through scenic trails and conquering mountain biking routes added to their exhilarating experiences.
Rachel’s Women’s center meal volunteers, Tammy, Karen, Valerie, Ellen, and Lorraine provided a much-needed meal to the clients at their day center and enjoyed the process!
— Elaine & HerbWhat a comfort it was to receive the Mish Bag from Caring Community with your warm expression of care and condolence. Thanks to all the congregants who cooked delicious soup, salmon, mac and cheese, kugel, and challah. We were exhausted the day after the funeral so to receive the thoughtful Mish Bag the next day spared us the need to cook or even think about “take-out” and it was a heartwarming generous gift. We are forever grateful to have been lovingly held by our Beth Israel Community.

As we look forward to a new year, it is inspiring to look back and see how much we have accomplished in 2022-23. For over 162 years, Beth Israel has been at the center of San Diego Jewish life and this year is no different. In the aftermath of the pandemic, we have worked tirelessly to reconnect as a community through rich and varied offerings, meaningful worship and festive occasions.
In the pages that follow, we hope you will share our pride in Beth Israel’s thriving and growing community and consider ways to get involved. Beth Israel is truly our second home and needs every one of you to ensure its vitality and strength.
Thank you for your continued generosity and commitment. May 5784 be a sweet new year for you and your family.
Guided and mentored 37 students in preparation for their B’nei Mitzvah
Officiated 25 Weddings | Officiated 5 Bris/Namings
Oversaw 10 Beit Dins | Conducted 29 Funerals
THE
The Beth Israel Hunger Project is a shining example of how one person’s vision can make a huge impact on their community. For over 37 YEARS this program has fed hundreds of thousands of people in need.
The Hunger Project feeds between 400 and 750 adults every Sunday morning.
During the pandemic, the dining room was closed for volunteers to help serve. However, as of February 2023, the dining room now accepts volunteers to help set-up, serve, and clean up.
Your help is needed now more than ever. Visit our website to sign up.
Sometimes life brings you small gifts that turn out far more giant than imagined. The service trip my daughter and I took to the Dominican Republic with Beth Israel was very much one of those gifts. Tali and I had the privilege of traveling deep into the mountain town of Managua with Rabbi Nevarez and 15 other fantastic individuals. With not one architect, engineer or contractor in the group we were entrusted with building someone’s new house. Possible, because this house needed no internal wiring or piping. Correct, we, and they, lived (and showered and cooked and cleaned) off water from the river down the hill.
It’s hard to summarize the value of shoveling dirt, mixing cement, bending rebar, laying cinder block, and building someone’s survival structure, but I can very easily summarize the value of interacting with the townspeople, particularly the awaiting home-owner, mother of 5 and grandmother of 13. She was strong, kind and surrounded by a beautiful family. In this seemingly “poor” town with no running water and make-shift electricity, where hand-medowns and barely hand-to-mouth were a clear way of life, they felt awfully rich to me.
117 New Member households joined Beth Israel on 2022-2023, 14 of which are Preschool/Infant Center households
More than 155 congregants volunteered last year
Food assembly produced more than 50 meals for Fill the Freezer
Chanukah Artist in Residence Jacob "Spike" Kraus created an incredible and impactful experience for our community.
Our participation in the San Diego Pride Parade was a momentous and impactful occasion. The Pride parade attracted over 300,000 people.
Our Intro to Judaism class exceeded expectations and left a lasting impact.
7th grade religious school students prepared 79 meals
40 bakers made over 500 Hamentaschen for the Pink & Teal Hamentaschen Bake
101 children enrolled in 2022-2023
The Chanukah Light-Lab was a “highlight” of the festival celebrations for young families.
Monthly Young Family Shabbats on Friday afternoons bring together students from our preschool along with other young families in our community to celebrate shabbat together through story, song, and of course, snacks!
Tuesdays In The Park continue to be the most popular summer tradition on our lower playfield. Featuring music and dessert on select Tuesdays throughout the summer.
374 enrolled Religious School students
69 Madrichim
53 students went on the Platt Youth Israel trips in June and December
13 students went to L'Taken in Washington DC to learn alongside Reform Jewish teens from across the country and lobby on Capitol Hill
28 students attended B’nei Mitzvah Boot Camp last summer
Hundreds of Beth Israel volunteers came together for the MLK Day of Service on Monday, February 20th at Balboa Park. Inspiring words from diverse faith leaders including Bishop Gregory Edwards, Rabbi Cantor Arlene Bernstein, Imam Taha Hassane, and Rev. Dr. Hannah Ka were shared. Volunteers joined hands to beautify our community and enjoyed the company of old and new friends through music and a BBQ.
Beth Israel and First United Methodist Church joined together for the 42nd Annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service. Our communities collected items to contribute to our service project benefitting Second Families. Second Families partners with resettlement agencies to ease new arrivals’ transition. The purpose is to help resettle refugees, helping them with initial household items, food, and resources.
On June 3, 2023, more than 300 people attended Beth Israel’s Annual Fundraiser, Dancing with the Stars of Beth Israel. Guests were treated to amazing performances by six Beth Israel dancers and their professional partners. The Mirror Ball Trophy was awarded to the crowd favorite, Becca Myers and Raphael Stigliano. The fun and successful event raised $270,300 for Beth Israel programs and services.
To thank our most generous donors, Ner Tamid Circle members, Dor L’Dor Society members and major donors were invited to a Summer Soiree in August.
Emily and Chris Jennewein graciously opened their beautiful home for the event. Rabbi Jason Nevarez and President Dan Jones shared highlights for the coming year, and guests enjoyed a lovely afternoon of socializing, music and refreshments.
Women of Beth Israel strives to enrich the lives of all Beth Israel members by providing social and spiritual enrichment to our community, financial support to various CBI programs and more.
Activities include:
Fun and lively events such as Succulents and Sangria, Latkes and Vodka, and a Family Movie Night
Volunteering at Rachels’ House making food, serving the residents, and collecting donated items
Volunteering at Humble Design, an organization that helps those emerging from homelessness in our community.
The Men’s Club offers adult men a Jewish setting in which to learn and socialize while supporting our congregation. Last year we:
Provided 1000 latkes for the religious school and served over 600 of these to the K-6 religious school classes (with help from many Congregation volunteers).
Donated over 300 memorial candles for a special Yom Hashoah service, also requesting congregants’ contributions to our Yom Hashoah Fund.
Sponsored our annual trip to a Padres game for Jewish Heritage Day and sold out all 70 tickets.
My name is John Lefter and I have the privilege to serve as your Treasurer. Here are some of the highlights of our current financial performance, the future outlook and the help needed from you to strengthen our synagogue home, Beth Israel.
• Rebuilding efforts continue following the pandemic
• We are feeling the impact of inflation
• Building maintenance expenditures continue to rise as our aging facility demands more of our attention
• We saw a surge in membership growth as people seek community and connection following isolation brought on by a pandemic.
• Our preschool is strong but faces the tough challenge of free public transitional kindergarten
• Our Cemetery and Mausoleum operations continue to contribute significantly to our revenue
• Refine our strategic and financial plan to align with long-term objectives
• Work on opening our doors to more members as the campus continues to open and more activities emerge
• Analyze and identify financial improvements and innovations to increase the efficiency of our resource utilization
• Your financial support is at the foundation of our congregation's fiscal well-being. If everyone increased their commitment by 10% or more we would eliminate the income/expense gap currently anticipated in the 23-24 budget.
• Make a contribution to our Endowment Fund, either with a cash pledge or by committing a legacy gift
• Consider also supporting other focused campaigns as they arise
• We need your financial support to be able to provide you with services, programming and the warm and welcoming community which we call home
We invite you to share in the celebration of a new phase in our music program. As we honor Rabbi Cantor Bernstein's exceptional contributions, we also await welcoming Rabbi (soon to be Cantor) Gimbel, our future Rabbi Cantor starting July 2024. Join us in congratulating Rabbi Gimbel and expressing gratitude to Rabbi Cantor Bernstein for her dedication and years of service.
The congregation will undergo a search for an Assistant Rabbi to join the Clergy suite. This search will be chaired by Robyn Spiegel.
The Beth Israel Communications Advisory Council, led by Dave Boodman, is pleased to announce that a new website is coming in 2024. This new site will reflect who we are as a congregation and community with ease of use, modern look and feel, and visual storytelling.
BETH ISRAEL DAY OF SERVICE 2023, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 15 @ 9:00 AM - 11:30 AM
Join us on Sunday, October 15 at 9:00 am as we come together and give our time on various projects such as painting, sprucing up a garden bed, preparation of Religious School materials, building the sukkah, or assembling membership packets for membership. Beverages and snacks provided.
FRIDAY, MARCH 1, 2024 - SUNDAY, MARCH 3, 2024
Rabbi Geoffrey Mitelman is the Founding Director of Sinai and Synapses, an organization that bridges the scientific and religious worlds, and is being incubated at Clal - The National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership. His writings about the intersection of religion and science have appeared on the homepages of several sites, including The Huffington Post, Nautilus, and Science and Religion Today.

6:15 pm Diverse Access Available. Erev Shabbat Service with Sermon “Has Science Replaced God?” For centuries, religion provided answers for our ancestors to all of life’s questions. But as modern Jews, we usually look to science to tell us where we came from, who we are, or even how we should act. So how should we look at, think about and talk about the relationship between science and religion in today’s world?
7:30 pm-8:30 pm Diverse Access: Post Oneg Study Session expanding on Sermon “Has Science Replaced God?”
Saturday, March 2, 2024
9:00 am-10:15 am Diverse Access: Shabbat Morning Torah Study Torah Portion: Acharei Mot - K’doshim “Evolution of Morality” When we think about Darwinian evolution, we often think about fierce competition for resources, or how our genes influence our kids’ height, or how it might clash with religious teachings. But in fact, evolution by natural selection can help us understand the roots of morality, which can then inform Jewish law and Jewish ethics.
Sunday, March 3, 2024
9:15 am-10:45 am Diverse Access: Sunday Morning Session “The Cosmos and the Covenant” As we discover more exoplanets, and learn just how expansive our universe is, how do we situate ourselves in the cosmos? Are we insignificant, or are we special? Light refreshments will be served.
This program is made possible in part by the Bonnie Graff Scholar-in-Residence Fund Presented by Adult Education Committee
Your annual membership commitment of at least $2830 is an investment in Beth Israel's future.
