WE WILL CONSIDER WHAT IT MEANS TO CHOOSE LIFE THROUGH THREE INTERCONNECTED COMMITMENTS Dear Friends, The approach of a new Jewish year invites us to pause and ask a deeply personal question: What kind of life do we want to create in the year ahead? As we prepare to welcome 5787, there is much for which to be grateful: moments shared with family and friends, the strength of our Beth Israel community, and the countless opportunities we have to bring meaning and goodness into the world. At the same time, we remain mindful of the uncertainty around us: the continuing pain in Israel and throughout the region, the metastasizing reach of antisemitism, and the divisions that can make it harder to recognize one another’s humanity. In the midst of it all, Jewish tradition reminds us that we are never without agency. “I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore, choose life - Uvacharta bachayim - so that you and your descendants may live.” (Deuteronomy 30:19) Uvacharta Bachayim: Choose Life is Beth Israel’s High Holy Day theme for 5787. These words do not describe a single, dramatic decision. They challenge us to make countless sacred choices each day: how we speak, how we listen, where we direct our attention, whom we welcome, and what values we allow to guide us. Choosing life does not mean ignoring life’s difficulties. It means meeting them without allowing fear, anger, or despair to define who we become. It calls us to protect what matters while safeguarding our own humanity - and to recognize the humanity of others, even when doing so is difficult.
Purpose reminds us that our lives are not accidental and that each of us has a responsibility to use our gifts in service of something larger than ourselves. Belonging draws us back into relationship - with family, with community, with the Jewish people, and with God. It reminds us that we were never meant to carry life’s joys or burdens alone. When the shofar sounds, it will summon us out of habit and into awareness. Its call will ask: What deserves more of our attention? What must we release? Where are we being asked to show greater courage, compassion, or generosity? What kind of life are we choosing through the decisions we make each day? We cannot determine all that the coming year will bring. But we can decide how we will meet it. We can choose to be present rather than distracted, purposeful rather than resigned, connected rather than isolated. We can choose words that heal, actions that strengthen, and relationships that restore. We can choose life - not only for ourselves, but for one another. I look forward to gathering as a sacred community and beginning 5787 with open hearts, renewed intention, and the courage to choose life together. L’shana Tova Rabbi Jason Nevarez
Throughout these Days of Awe, we will consider what it means to choose life through three interconnected commitments: Presence. Purpose. Belonging. Presence asks us to slow down and truly encounter the people, experiences, and blessings before us.

WE WILL ENSURE OUR CONGREGATION
REMAINS VIBRANT AND THRIVING
Shalom, Friends! My name is Robyn Spiegel, and I am deeply honored to serve as President of Beth Israel. It is truly a privilege to lead alongside such dedicated clergy, staff, lay leaders, and volunteers, and to have the opportunity to give back to a community that has given so much to me and my family. My husband, Matt, and I became Beth Israel members in 2011 when our older daughter, Ashley (16), began in the Beth Israel Toddler Transition Program. Since then, Beth Israel has been woven into many chapters of our family's life. Both of our daughters attended the Bill and Sid Rubin Preschool and grew up in our Lee and Frank z"l Goldberg Religious School and youth programs. Ashley now serves as a Madricha, and Maya (13), who celebrated her Bat Mitzvah this past January, will begin training as a Madricha this year. Watching our girls grow into young Jewish leaders has been one of the greatest blessings of our family's Beth Israel journey. Professionally, I am an educational consultant specializing in literacy and critical thinking. I have the privilege of partnering with teachers and school administrators, helping them strengthen their instructional practices. Education has always been my passion, and I believe many of those same principles— listening, collaboration, thoughtful leadership, and investing in people—also make strong communities. Over the past decade, I have had the privilege of serving Beth Israel in many capacities, including on the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee, and as Vice President and Development Co-Chair. I have also had the honor of chairing or serving on several significant leadership initiatives, including our Assistant Rabbinic Search Committee, the Senior Rabbinic Search Committee, clergy transitions, and our 2022 Gala. Each experience has only deepened my love for this congregation and my appreciation for the extraordinary people who make Beth Israel such a special place. This is a pivotal and exciting time for our congregation. While we prepare to say goodbye to two remarkable women and leaders—Lesley Mills and Rabbi Elana Ackerman Hirsch—we must also look ahead with optimism and confidence in Beth Israel's future. For more than 20 years, Lesley's exceptional leadership, 4 FALL 2026 / 5787
unwavering dedication, and deep love for this congregation have helped shape the Beth Israel we know today, leaving an enduring legacy that will be felt for years to come. In her relatively short time with us, Rabbi Ackerman Hirsch has become a beloved member of our clergy team and congregational family, touching so many lives with her warmth, wisdom, and compassion. We are profoundly grateful for all they have given to Beth Israel and wish them every happiness in the next chapters of their journeys. As we honor their extraordinary contributions, I am committed to thoughtful, thorough, and successful searches for our next Executive Director and Assistant Rabbi so that Beth Israel continues to flourish for generations to come. Our Building for the Future Capital Campaign continues to build incredible momentum, and we have now surpassed $10 million in commitments. Thank you to everyone who has already participated. If you have not yet had the opportunity to contribute, there is still time to be part of this transformational effort. Whether supporting the mikvah, improvements to our campus, or both, every gift helps strengthen the future of Beth Israel. We look forward to breaking ground on the mikvah in late spring 2027. As our clergy and staff prepare for the High Holy Days, I look forward to welcoming you and your family into our sanctuary to begin another meaningful year together. This season invites us to reflect, reconnect, and recommit ourselves—not only to our own spiritual journeys, but also to the community we share. As President, my vision is centered on three priorities that I believe will help strengthen Beth Israel for today and for generations to come: Connection, Leadership, and Continuity. Connection means creating a congregation where every member feels welcomed, valued, and known. I hope to foster meaningful relationships, deepen engagement, and ensure that Beth Israel continues to be a place where people find community, purpose, and belonging. Leadership means investing in the people who guide our congregation. We will continue strengthening our governance, thoughtfully onboarding and mentoring new board members, reinvigorating committee work, and cultivating the next generation of lay leaders who will carry Beth Israel forward.
Continuity means honoring all that has brought us to this moment while thoughtfully preparing for what comes next. Through successful searches for our next Executive Director and Assistant Rabbi, continued momentum in our Capital Campaign, and a steadfast commitment to Beth Israel's long-term vision, we will ensure our congregation remains vibrant and thriving for generations to come.
worship, care, and sense of belonging that define Beth Israel are made possible by the generosity and commitment of our members.
As we begin this new year together, I encourage you to renew your membership and, if you are able, consider increasing your level of support. The warmth, learning,
L'Shalom,
Thank you for the trust you have placed in me. I look forward to meeting many of you over the coming year and working together to build an even stronger future for Beth Israel. Robyn Spiegel President

Together, we will explore the timeless values that shape Jewish life by engaging with sacred texts and discovering the stories and traditions from which they emerge. Through text study, play, bibliodrama, creative activities, and a variety of hands-on learning experiences, students will deepen their understanding of these values and consider how they can bring them to life in their own daily lives. We look forward to a meaningful year of learning, growing, and living our values together.

This summer, our upcoming seventh graders took meaningful steps in their B’nei Mitzvah journey during two one-week sessions of B’nei Mitzvah Bootcamp. Through learning with clergy and Religious School staff, they explored gratitude, giving back to the community, connecting Torah to their own lives, and the basics of Torah cantillation. Daily community service projects, including a beach cleanup, volunteering at Coastal Roots Farm, and baking for Beth Israel’s Caring Community, helped inspire their own Mitzvah Projects. Along the way, campers built friendships and strengthened their connection to Judaism and the Beth Israel community.

CALEB ROMANO
November 21, 10am
Tali is the daughter of Gali and Haim Snapy, the granddaughter of Elizabeth and Oleg Pesach, and Sima and Yehonatan Snapy. She is a graduate of Beth Israel Preschool and a member of the Beth Israel Youth Choir. Tali is a student at "Kavod", where she also serves as an ambassador. She is a compassionate, gentle, and responsible young woman, known for her thoughtfulness and her devotion to helping others. In her free time, she enjoys reading, listening to music, training her dog, attending Comic-Con with her family, and spending time with friends. She shares an especially close bond with her younger sister, Maya, whom she looks after with great care. For her Bat Mitzvah project, "Suitcases to Israel", Tali helped organize and sort donations to send to schools across Israel. Among the recipients was a special education school that her cousin attends, where she personally delivered the suitcase with care.
Riley is a 7th grader at Earl Warren Middle School. He is the son of Kimberly and Michael Center, big brother to Silas and Tate, and grandson of Sandy and Richard z”l Brown, Stella Josephine, John Ikazaki and Wieslaw Halat. Riley is a member of the Teen Choir at Beth Israel, and enjoys playing the guitar and appearing in his school's musicals. In his free time, he likes playing soccer and basketball with friends, building Legos with his brothers, and reading (lots and lots and lots). He also enjoys surfing and being at the beach and spending his summers fishing in Alaska and going to Camp Mountain Chai. For his B’nai Mitzvah Project, Riley will be raising money and hosting a book drive to increase access to children’s books within under-resourced communities.
Caleb Romano, son of Tamar Caspi and Mark Romano, grandson of Leslie & Shlomo Caspi and Vivian & Solly (z"l) Romano of Montreal, brother of Jordan and Remy. Caleb is in 7th grade at Pershing Middle School and his favorite subject is math. His passion is baseball (baseball is life!) and when Caleb isn't playing baseball, he can be found playing wiffle ball or MLB The Show. Caleb is a huge Padres fan and hopes to represent Team Israel in the World Baseball Classic. Caleb also likes experimenting in the kitchen and has made some delectable dishes (we don't mention the failed ones!). For his Bar Mitzvah project, Caleb will be collecting new and used baseball gear to donate to young ball players to have the opportunity to grow up loving the game just as much as he does.
