BETHESDA PROJECT

Annual Report

The mission of Bethesda Project is to find and care for the abandoned poor and to be family with those who have none.

In November 2012 there was a brief Internet sensation around a photo depicting a New York City policeman, Larry DePrimo, giving a brand-new pair of shoes to a man sitting barefoot on a cold sidewalk in Times Square. Officer DePrimo bought the shoes with his own money and, after helping the man put them on, he quietly walked away, telling no one except his mother about this good deed. Unbeknownst to him, a tourist from Arizona noticed what was going on, took a photo of this random act of kindness and placed that photo on the Internet. Within a few days people around the world applauded this compassionate act — and rightly so. We at Bethesda Project have been privileged to witness many extraordinary acts of kindness and compassion by our volunteers and staff, which typically go unheralded. A couple of years ago, Jen and Wayne Rickert realized that there was a great need for volunteers outside of the typical major holiday times, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. With their own spiritual journey leading them “to focus outside of ourselves,” they took it upon themselves to spruce up and refurbish Mary House — one of our independent housing sites. They spent five days — all day — working on that house, aided in part by some high school volunteers. Having established a good relationship with the men who live there, they have returned on a monthly basis to provide a homecooked meal and to address any small maintenance needs that come up. Eager to do more, they regularly prepare and serve breakfast at Our Brothers’ Place, our largest shelter that serves 150 men per night, and at other times they bring and serve dinner at Old First Reformed Church — one of our winter church shelters. And when a need arose to paint some rooms at our women’s residence — Bethesda Spruce Street — they eagerly volunteered. They have become an integral part of the Bethesda Project family and have shown a profound understanding of our mission “to be family with those who have none.” I don’t believe that this example can be characterized as a “random” act of kindness; it reflects the conscious decision to participate in the mission of Bethesda Project, which aims to create a more humane society. It is in this light that I applaud the often hidden and unheralded acts of kindness, compassion and generosity that so many of our volunteers, staff and benefactors regularly engage in. Well done!

Programs and Services Bethesda Project, recognizing that each individual is unique, offers a continuum of care that meets men and women “where they are.” Each Bethesda Project housing resident or shelter guest receives personalized, caring attention, and is encouraged to achieve the most independent level of housing possible. The following programs operate at 15 locations in Philadelphia and serve more than 3,000 men and women each year.

The Bethesda Beacon

Bethesda Project makes services more accessible to highly vulnerable, shelter-resistant individuals at each of its five entry-level programs. Chronically homeless men and women who struggle with severe mental illness and/or addiction receive food, shelter and referrals to social services. Bethesda Project staff reach out to shelter-resistant individuals with tenacious, dignified care and help them transition to housing.

The Beacon Drop-In Center, at Broad Street Ministry 315 S. Broad Street

A day-time drop-in center offering year-round referrals to social services and maintaining relationships with individuals who visit the Bethesda Café (see below). Bethesda Café at Broad Street Ministry 315 S. Broad Street (winter only)

Shelter-resistant men and women find respite from the cold and the streets at an overnight drop-in center serving up to 75 men and women nightly.

Church-Based Shelters

Meals, overnight shelter, and case management services for 80 homeless men, in partnership with three area churches. St. Mary’s Episcopal Church 1831 Bainbridge Street Old First Reformed Church 4th and Race Streets (winter only) Trinity Memorial Church 22nd and Spruce Streets (winter only)

My Brother’s House 609 S. 15th Street

This Safe Haven program offers pre-recovery housing and an array of supportive services to 20 vulnerable men with chronic mental illness and substance abuse problems. 3

Subsidized independent living for 11 men and women. Brothers’ Keeper

Off-site, affordable housing at two sites for 16 men.

I want to share with you the story of our youngest son, Patrick, who fell into addiction at the age of 17. Pat’s brothers and sisters would be the first to admit he was the brightest of the bunch and full of wit and fun. He loved his siblings and enjoyed playing tricks on them whenever he could. He was an avid reader and a quick wit. Unfortunately, Pat also had a dark side that haunted his every day with fears of inadequacy and unworthiness. We lost him in 2001 when he was only 19 years old. Patrick always had a home. His family stuck by him and we worked as hard as we could to help him through the bad times that would often consume him. His brothers and sisters were there for him until his final moments. He died with us — at home, where he was loved. Our family is grateful for the time we had with Patrick, although it was far too short for us, and far too dark for our son. Many are not so lucky. Many find that their families can no longer deal with their illness or cannot afford the treatment to help them cope. These are the men and women who become our “family” at Bethesda Project. These are the people who we seek out and help every day. If we had not been able to continue to care for Pat, we would want to know that he was loved and cared for the way he would have been had he walked into any of our Bethesda Project homes. He would have found more than just a meal: he would have found compassion. He would have found more than shelter: he would have found a caring family. That is Bethesda Project in a sentence: “Being family with those who have none.” That is what Bethesda Project does every day. We help people make it through the nightmare of homelessness, mental illness and addiction. We thank all those who have opened their hearts to Bethesda Project and to all of the “Patricks” that it serves.

Aaron’s Story

A Bright Future Aaron first came to Bethesda Project five years ago through the Bethesda Café. As a 22-year-old experiencing homelessness and drug addiction, he had difficulty adjusting to shelter programs elsewhere. The attitude of ‘mind over matter’ made Aaron believe that he could stop using when he decided that he wanted to. But the cycle of addiction proved otherwise and kept him out on the streets.

After he graduates from his GED program in February 2013, Aaron plans to enroll at a trade school to obtain his electrician’s license. Electrical work has long been an area of interest for Aaron. He remembers fixing toasters and other household appliances as an early teen. After gaining a few years of work experience, he aims to start his own electrician business and to move into his own apartment.

With continual guidance and encouragement from Misty Sparks, Bethesda Project’s Director of Entry Level Programs, Aaron entered recovery programs and in time found permanent supportive housing at Connelly House. “I’ve never met a person like Misty before,” Aaron says. “She always kept the door open for me even when I was in bad shape, and I will never forget her.”

When Aaron has his new place, he is eager to invite friends and relatives over. He wants to show them the same hospitality that they showed him throughout his difficult periods on the streets and in and out of rehab. Aaron also looks forward to spending more time with his son, whom he says is one of the most important reasons he keeps himself together now. This past Christmas, in fact, was one of the first in many years that Aaron was able to purchase gifts for his son.

Now at age 26, Aaron is one of Bethesda Project’s youngest residents. He has been clean for 18 months, and he divides his time between GED classes, outpatient therapy, and peer mentoring. While he works diligently to plan for the future, Aaron looks to other residents at Connelly to guide him through challenging situations. He has found one particular mentor with whom he’s developed a close relationship. “Certain times when I need the help, he gives me good advice,” Aaron says. He also attributes his success to Connelly staff members who help keep him on track with his responsibilities.

6

Originally from Southwest Philadelphia, Aaron is working to build a bright future here in the city. Connelly House has provided an environment of stability and support that has enabled him to kickstart his career and his independence, and he looks forward to more success in coming years. “While I’m here I can get some ducks in a row in my life. I’m super grateful and thankful for that,” Aaron says.

KEVIN’s Story

A HEALING HEART Meet Kevin, a vibrant personality who has moved through Bethesda Project’s continuum of care in recent years. Originally a shelter guest, Kevin participated in a recovery program that helped him find a job proctoring at a computer lab. For a period, Kevin was able to support himself and rent an apartment in South Philly, but his addiction would change the course of his progress. “That was me running my own life. It fell apart real fast because I was in charge,” he says. When Kevin again reached out to Bethesda Project through the Bethesda Café, the Director of Entry Level Programs, Misty Sparks, told Kevin about the newly opened Connelly House, a permanent supportive housing facility for men in recovery. Eager to move into a supportive environment and willing to overcome obstacles along the way, he stayed temporarily at My Brothers’ House, and in July 2012, moved into a room in Connelly House. In his time at Connelly, Kevin has been thriving. He has been regularly volunteering with Broad Street Ministry and at an elementary school in Fishtown. Positively impacting other peoples’ lives is why Kevin truly enjoys volunteering. “When I start getting out of myself and think about others, my job is to help God take care of them,” he believes. Throughout each week, Kevin also attends outpatient therapy, works a part-time job, and goes to daily meetings

with his sponsor to work through his issues. He has appointed a figurative Board of Directors who also help him make decisions and stay on track with his goals. Kevin feels accountable to his Board, and believes that he owes it to them to stay clean. “Once, everything I had could fit into two duffel bags, and that’s what I wanted,” Kevin says. “I could get up and go anywhere. But the things I couldn’t pack away were the people in my life.” Realizing the value of relationships, Kevin has worked to reconnect with friends and family members since his days on the street. He even jokes that Mark Zuckerberg is the most influential person in his life. Facebook has been an important tool in helping Kevin reconcile negative feelings about his past and removing heavy baggage from his shoulders. “I had a lot of guilt from the stupidity of my youth. But it turns out the only person carrying it was me,” Kevin says. “I’m walking into tomorrow lighter than today because I’m not carrying the past.” Kevin will complete his outpatient program in spring of 2013, at which point he plans to find stable employment for at least a year, and then begin training for a job in social services. While he works toward that goal, Kevin strives to be a community leader at Connelly House and to continue contributing to the greater good through volunteerism.

Country’s Story

An UPDATE In our 2010 Annual Report, Bethesda Project highlighted Country as an individual who had overcome homelessness by reaching out to the Bethesda Café. At the time of the story, Country had recently taken care of his medical needs, connected with an old friend, and was settling into an independent lifestyle at Bethesda North Broad.

At the Café, his main responsibilities are to set up and close the Café each night, to monitor for emergencies, and to build relationships with Café guests to ensure that their needs are met. Regular training sessions in first aid and crisis management have prepared Country, along with other Café staff members, to respond to situations as they arise.

Since then, he has taken even more steps toward achieving his goals. He joined Bethesda Project’s Community Life Council to help plan activities and events that enrich the experiences of all Bethesda Project guests and residents. He has also become a key figure in the community at North Broad—from making sure new residents feel welcome to stepping in to straighten the house Christmas tree, Country has demonstrated that he is eager to go out of his way to help others.

Since he started his position at the Café in mid-December, Country has recognized some familiar faces from years ago. “Some of them are surprised to see me working there,” he notes. “But I say, ‘Hey, you could work here one day too.’”

Recently, Country returned to the Bethesda Café as an employee. “I’m familiar with how things work because I stayed there six years ago,” he says. Country is one of several former Bethesda Project Café guests who, after finding permanent housing through the organization, have also found employment within it.

10

Country has been praised for his compassion and competence by Café staff members, and Program Coordinator Sarah Erdo believes that “Country has been a great employee who blends in wonderfully with the team.” When the winter season ends, Country plans to apply for other positions at Bethesda Project shelters and residences. Carrying over his eagerness to assist others from his home life to his work life, he expresses, “If I can help out in any way, I will.”

Lorraine’s Story

Taking a Stand As an early teenager, Lorraine carried the weight of looking after her younger siblings while her mother abused drugs and alcohol. In high school, she fell into the same patterns of substance abuse and shortly after became a victim of domestic violence. Though she worked on and off, she struggled to support herself and her daughters, and when she began using crack cocaine in the 1990’s, things took a turn for the worse. “It wasn’t working. My life was pretty much in shambles at that time,” she says. Years later, after several attempts to end a long and self-destructive battle with her addiction, Lorraine decided to take a stand and start making better choices. When she began a recovery program two years ago, she found the positive environment that she needed to keep her spirits high and walk away from her old ways. “Every day I have to continue working on myself,” Lorraine says. “I was losing all the time, and today I’m on the winning side. I never thought I’d get off drugs, but now I’m so free.” Now a resident at Bethesda North Broad, Lorraine is working hard to accomplish her goals of achieving independence and strengthening relationships with loved ones. In addition to keeping busy at her job,

studying for GED courses, and going to outpatient therapy, Lorraine builds friendships with other North Broad residents and staff by actively participating in community events at the house. Her newfound determination to succeed helped her land a part-time position as a home health aide. She finds the job to be rewarding, and she believes that working in the social services field has contributed to her positive outlook. “When I help someone else, I feel good,” Lorraine says. Qualified with a CNA license, she is eagerly looking for a full-time position in homecare. Through her recovery program, Lorraine also met a person who has become very important in her life— her boyfriend Sam. Whether they are attending meetings, sharing meals, or catching a movie, Lorraine and Sam spend time together every day of the week. They lean on each other for support and even plan to marry one day. Lorraine especially appreciates how Sam has taught her to avoid stress, and to enjoy what she has. “I’ve been through a lot and I’m grateful to be here,” she says. “For those who are still struggling, my advice is to just ask God, look for something positive, and make the decision to change.”
