F OU NDE R ’ S C OR NE R MY NAME IS DOMENIC ROSSI. I AM A NATIVE PHILADELPHIAN AND I AM BETHESDA PROJECT. In 1979 I, and the prayer group I led at Daylesford Abbey, felt very strongly that God was calling us to serve the needs of the homeless of Philadelphia. We started by housing 10 chronically homeless women in a former rooming house at 12th and Sansom Streets. We were not trained social workers or mental health workers; in those early days we were just volunteers formed by our faith to see the hundreds of people living on the streets as our brothers and sisters. We believed it was our duty before God to help them in any way that we could, and so Bethesda Project was born. Now, 36 years later, the work of Bethesda Project has blossomed and grown. Joined by people of different faiths and other people of goodwill – professional and volunteer – we serve over 2,500 different individuals each year in 13 locations ranging from overnight shelters to permanent housing with supportive services. As you may already know, I have transitioned from CEO into a part-time position at Bethesda Project as Director of Mission Advancement – to continue to tell our compelling story and to encourage others to join in our mission to “be family with those who have none.” This change has allowed me to better attend to my new role as pastor of St. Gabriel Parish in South Philadelphia. I am excited to have handed over the leadership responsibility of Bethesda Project to the energy of a new generation. Father Hentzi Elek, an Episcopal priest with a long history of pastoral service, has taken over as CEO. He is bright and deeply passionate in his commitment to the poor. I could not be more delighted to be serving him in a supportive role to continue and expand the mission of Bethesda Project. You – our friends and colleagues in this critical work – you too are Bethesda Project.

FROM T H E C E O MY NAME IS HENTZI ELEK. I AM AN EPISCOPALIAN PRIEST AND I AM BETHESDA PROJECT. I have heard that Bethesda Project has a tremendously dedicated and talented staff and equally dedicated and generous supporters. I’ve also heard that you are passionate and compassionate, fiercely dedicated to caring for the most vulnerable people, those who have no family and no home. I became an Episcopal priest so that I could help the poorest of the poor, and over the past 30 years I have worked with people in abject poverty in the United States and around the world. Now, together with you, I have the chance to work full time in supporting men and women who struggle with addiction, mental illness, and the pain of homelessness. The future is always exciting and uncertain. However, I fervently believe that together we can continue to make a gigantic difference in the lives of the people we serve. I very much look forward to getting to know each of you and to working collaboratively so that we can all be the best we can be. This excellence translates into our ability to deliver the highest quality care for people who are homeless. MAKING THE CASE Philadelphia has the worst poverty rate of the ten largest cities in the U.S. The Philadelphia Housing Authority has over 100,000 individuals and families on its waiting list for affordable housing. Bethesda Project operates 13 locations in Philadelphia. Services include emergency shelters, permanent supportive housing, case management services and community activities to help each individual reach his or her highest level of self-sufficiency.

FROM T H E B OA R D C H A I R MY NAME IS BILL COTTER. I AM THE CURRENT CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND I AM BETHESDA PROJECT. It has been a distinct honor to be associated with Bethesda Project for more than 10 years and to see the great strides taken in fulfilling our most important mission. Our directors are deeply committed to honoring our values and our heritage of service to the abandoned poor, and that commitment is the one common bond among the entire board. It is our focus and our passion. As it is our custom, I will be stepping aside in a few months and Wesley Payne will be assuming the role of chair. Wesley is a long-time volunteer with Bethesda Project and an experienced leader. He, together with Father Hentzi, will be a dynamic team that will enhance the scope of who we are at Bethesda Project and what we accomplish. I look forward to continuing to work with both Wesley and Hentzi over the coming years. Who is Bethesda Project? We are the people we serve and the people who serve. I continue to be enriched by the people I meet at Bethesda Project every day. They are for me, in a very real way, the face of God. — Bill Cotter
Bethesda Project coordinates over 5,000 volunteer visits each year. Volunteers are an important part of building mutually rewarding friendships with housing residents and shelter guests. As a founding member of The Philadelphia Partnership to End Chronic Street Homelessness, Bethesda Project is committed to sharing resources and best practices to ensure men and women most at-risk of death on the streets in our community receive the care they deserve.

PROGRAMS AND SERVICES Bethesda Project, recognizing that each individual is unique, offers a continuum of care that meets men and women “where they are.� Each Bethesda Project housing resident or shelter guest receives personalized, caring attention, and is encouraged to achieve the most independent level of housing possible. The following programs operate at 13 locations in Philadelphia and serve more than 2,500 men and women each year.

ENTRY-LEVEL PROGRAMS
PERMANENT SUPPORTIVE HOUSING
Bethesda Project makes services more accessible to highly vulnerable, shelter-resistant individuals at each of its five entry-level programs. Chronically homeless men and women who struggle with severe mental illness and/ or addiction receive food, shelter and referrals to social services. Bethesda Project staff reach out to shelterresistant individuals with tenacious, dignified care and help them transition to housing.
Men and women receive supportive services to help them maintain stable housing.
The Beacon Outreach Office, at Our Brothers’ Place 907 Hamilton Street
Bethesda Bainbridge 700 S. 15th Street Permanent single room occupancy (SRO) housing for 30 men with histories of addiction and/or mental illness. Connelly House 1212 Ludlow Street
A day-time outreach office offering year-round referrals to social services and maintaining relationships with individuals who visit the church-based shelters (see below).
SRO housing for 24 men in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction who benefit from a supportive environment as they maintain sobriety and engage in meaningful activity. Operated in partnership with Project HOME.

This Safe Haven program offers pre-recovery housing and an array of supportive services to 20 vulnerable men with chronic mental illness and substance abuse problems.

INDEPENDENT HOUSING EMERGENCY SHELTER Men who are homeless receive supportive services and emergency shelter. The program is a first step for men to access services and housing in the community.

Six-unit apartment building for seven formerly homeless men and women.
Overnight shelter for 150 men providing three meals a day and supportive services, including referrals to housing and treatment programs. Operated in partnership with the City of Philadelphia.

JOHN, GUES T AT MY B R OT H E R ’ S H OU SE MY NAME IS JOHN. I AM 56 YEARS OLD AND I AM BETHESDA PROJECT. I’ve been living at My Brother’s House, a Safe Haven of Bethesda Project, since December 2014. Prior to that I stayed at the church-based shelter St. Mary’s for about a year. Misty Sparks, the Director of Entry-Level Programs for Bethesda Project, convinced me to give it a try after spending two years with her at the winter café. I’ve been homeless for eight years. I came to Philadelphia with my girlfriend leaving my hometown in Florida behind. We were doing well; we had our own apartment. But then my girlfriend started taking pain pills to numb the pain after an accident and she became hooked. Her demeanor totally changed. She became erratic and turned into a whole different person. We didn’t get along so she kicked me out of the apartment since it was in her name. I was feeling lonely and began drinking heavily. I lost my job as a chef and things just went from bad to worse. I found myself living on the streets, sleeping in an alley behind a Dunkin Donuts. I don’t know how it got so bad. I started drinking when I was 14. My

stepfather was an alcoholic so I guess I learned it from him. He was abusive to my mom and I hated him. I guess you can say I’ve seen a lot of trauma in my life. My stepdad committed suicide right in front of me when I was 18. I started taking care of myself in my teens, working full-time and going to school to be a chef. I love to cook. Even now I like to help make the meals at My Brother’s House. I also like to write poetry and draw. I hope to someday publish a book with all my poems and sketches. One of the sketches I did recently was chosen as a design for a new Bethesda Project t-shirt. I’m happy about that! In the future I look forward to getting my book published and returning to work. For now, I am taking it one day at a time.

CRYSTAL , F OR ME R R E SI DE NT AT B E T H E SDA SPR U C E MY NAME IS CRYSTAL. I AM A MOTHER AND A WIFE AND I AM BETHESDA PROJECT. It’s been nearly a year since I moved out of my carriage house apartment at Bethesda Spruce. I now live with my husband and younger children in Williamsport, PA. It was a long time coming. I lived at Bethesda Spruce for two years after spending some time working on my sobriety and dealing with some unhealthy habits. I had a tough upbringing and experienced a lot of sadness and many years of abuse, both physical and mental. I turned to alcohol and drugs as a means to escape, and in the process I lost my husband and children. I spent 11 years living in places not meant for human habitation before entering into a shelter. But that was then, and this is now. Today, I feel like a complete person. Today, I feel like myself again. My two years at Bethesda Spruce were the most significant in my path to recovery. I received unconditional love and support. Thanks to the care I received at Bethesda Spruce I am now five years sober, have obtained my GED, and reunited with my family. Bethesda Spruce will always have a special place in my heart. The ladies I met there will forever be my sisters. I look forward to visiting soon and catching up with my good friends.

JAMES , RES IDENT AT C ONNE L LY H OU SE MY NAME IS JAMES. I’M FROM CAMEROON, AFRICA AND I AM BETHESDA PROJECT. For me, seeing is believing. I come from a war torn country. My family and I, we had to escape to Ghana in 1999. We stayed there until 2005. Me and my family, we had to run or we would have been tracked down because they wanted to kill everybody. My stepdad was killed because of the war and because he was a politician. My mother and my brothers and sisters and I were eventually brought over to the United States as refugees. I’m lucky because I can still maintain contact with my brothers and sisters every few weeks. I was referred to Bethesda Project when I was homeless. I came to My Brother’s House in April 2011 and stayed there until January 2013, when I eventually moved into Connelly House. I like it here. For me, seeing is believing. I started my application for a green card two years ago. I studied for the test day and night. I really wanted to pass and I wanted badly to be a permanent resident of the United States. My case manager helped me practice interviewing for the test. The night before, I stayed up all night practicing. I am so grateful towards my case managers throughout the years and to Katrina and Dane and to my outstanding lawyer who helped me through this process. I was adamant on passing that test and I did! Seeing is believing and I love seeing my new green card inside of my wallet. I like showing it to people because for me, I think it is all good, especially now that I’ve been accepted as a permanent resident of the United States of America. I am hoping to get Supplemental Security Income, which will be much easier now that I have my

I had the energy and time to offer. Father Domenic Rossi was the Pastor at St. Norbert’s Parish at the time and I just loved listening to his wonderful sermons about the homeless and

is the annual fundraiser at St. Norbert’s that I have co-chaired for 16 years. It takes a lot of work but it is filled with some really great volunteers. The first fundraiser was in 1999 and has gone by different names throughout the years. We picked the Mardi Gras theme so it would become a known event in the area. It involves the help of the staff at St. Norbert, a large number of volunteers doing things such as publicity, mailing, soliciting for silent auction items, and a lot of computer entry before, during and at the end of the event. This past year, for the first time, Mardi Gras Magic was held at The Desmond Hotel in Malvern instead of at its usual spot at St. Norbert’s Parish Activity Center. We had 250 attendees and raised more than $58,000 for Bethesda Project!

Working with the homeless at the winter café has always been one of the most rewarding things, and volunteering at the houses runs a close second! It is always great fun whether I am cooking and serving meals or playing Bingo. For me, working with the homeless population has always seemed more than just a job to the Bethesda Project staff. The social work mantra of “unconditional positive regard” is truly lived out in the staff. I have always been impressed by how much they really care about the shelter guests and residents. That caring is passed along to the volunteers. The staff is and always has been caring, knowledgeable and supportive. My fellow volunteers are selfless and dedicated to making the lives of the men and women who live and stay at Bethesda Project a little brighter. Whatever you think you know about the homeless—whether they suffer from addiction or mental illness—is wrong. They are all interesting people who have a story to tell. Do yourself a favor and take some time to volunteer at Bethesda Project. It will change your life!
