Bethesda Project Annual Report

THE MISSION OF BETHESDA PROJECT IS TO FIND AND CARE FOR THE ABANDONED POOR AND TO BE FAMILY WITH THOSE WHO HAVE NONE.

Letter from the CEO Bethesda Project began in 1979 when I, along with a group of volunteers from Daylesford Abbey, responded to what we

believed was a divine inspiration to serve the homeless of Philadelphia – to be family with those who have none. We have grown from just one residence for 10 women to a network of 14 facilities in a continuum of care, from shelters to

permanent residences with supportive services. Over these past 35 years we have served tens of thousands of individuals – many of whose faces remain etched in our minds, their stories still move us.

I’d like to share the story of one of these individuals, John M. I can still see his face clearly in my mind even though he died

a number of years ago. John was born to an unmarried domestic worker in Chestnut Hill and was raised in foster homes

and orphanages. When he reached 18 years of age, he could no longer stay at the orphanage and found himself living on the street. Over the years, John did odd jobs and managed to make ends meet until alcohol put him back on the street. In

1986, when ringing a doorbell in Overbrook and asking for a sandwich, he met Tony Medwid, who later would become a

Bethesda Project volunteer and then a long-term, key staff person of our organization. Tony had heard of My Brother’s House and directed him to us, and from that time on John became a part of our “family.” Later, when Tony came to work at Bethesda Project, the two renewed their acquaintance and eventually became co-workers and good friends.

Tony recounts one day many years later when he was giving a talk to a group of college volunteers and John happened to pass by. Tony saw John and invited him to say a few words to the group. John reluctantly obliged and was soon telling the students the story of his childhood and years on the street. Then, poignantly, he shared about how, as a young person, he would sometimes spend Sunday afternoons walking around the neighborhood of the Italian Market. He said that he

would glance into people’s homes to see families gathered around their dinner tables, eating, laughing and enjoying one another’s company – he said he wanted to know what it was like to have a family.

One of the volunteers was stunned and sadly asked John if he had ever found out what it was like to have a family. John paused, thought a minute, looked over at Tony and said, “Well, I guess he’s it.” Tony, and then John, smiled.

The volunteers and staff of Bethesda Project, as well as our residents and guests, have indeed become that network of supportive and caring relationships for one another, which we prefer to call family.

Thank you to all who are a part of our mission to be family with those who have none. Our volunteers, staff, donors, residents and guests, you all encompass the many faces of Bethesda Project!

Letter from the Board Chair Two years ago I shared with you the story of my father, Bill Cotter, Sr., who lost everything in the Depression and turned to drink for solace. His struggles with alcoholism were long and difficult, but he ultimately turned his life around due to the help of good people – like my mother – who deeply cared. He never forgot those dark days and always cared for those who were not as fortunate.

Last year I told of our youngest son, Patrick, who suffered from depression and died due to an overdose in 2001 at the age of 19. Pat always had a home with us, but so many are not as lucky and lose everything due to their disease.

This year as Bethesda Project celebrates 35 years of being a caring family for Philadelphia’s homeless, I would like to talk to you about the Bethesda Project dream – our vision for the future and how we can help so many more, so much faster and better.

The Bethesda Project “Step-Up” model is on the drawing boards and we are committed to providing one facility that can

help Philadelphia’s chronically homeless population. It is a bold project, but they are the best kind because they are so vitally needed and so very transformative.

We envision a place where a homeless person can drop in on a cold winter’s night or a steaming hot summer day for shelter from the elements and can be provided the the full range of services needed to help each individual reach his or her highest level of self-sufficiency.

There is a huge amount of planning and personal commitment needed by the staff of Bethesda Project to turn that dream into a reality, but we are ready for the challenge. We hope you are too.

— Bill Cotter

B ethesda Project loves volunteers! The Community Life Department coordinates over 3,500 volunteer visits each year.

Volunteers are an important part of the Bethesda Project family, building mutually rewarding friendships with housing residents and shelter guests. They cook and serve meals, plan holiday gatherings, collect donations, provide literacy tutoring, paint and decorate residences, play games, do crafts, and garden and cook with residents and guests.

6 5% of Bethesda Project residents have serious medical issues. 60% have mental illnesses. 45% have histories of addiction. And 30% are dual diagnosed with mental illness and addiction. Case managers work with residents to help manage these challenges.

Philadelphia faces a housing crisis: the Philadelphia Housing Authority has 100,000 individuals and families on its waiting list for affordable housing.

Misty has spent the last 16 years creating and applying innovative solutions to end street homelessness in Philadelphia.

Originally from Texas, Misty came to Philadelphia through Mission Year and served at a women’s safe haven which

sparked a passion for this important work. Having worked as a case manager, program coordinator and now a director, Misty has developed a reputation within the homeless community as a person who creates opportunities for positive change. She has developed solid collaborative partnerships with various service providers throughout the region. Misty

is now responsible for planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs at Bethesda Project’s 20-bed safe haven, an 84-bed church based shelter program, and winter initiative drop in for 50-75 chronically street homeless individuals.

“The best part of my job is spending time with guests and building long term relationships that assist them with their transition out of homelessness,” said Misty. “I am excited to create opportunities for folks that resist working with the system.”

When asked about the most difficult aspects of her work, Misty emphasizes the lack of accessible permanent housing opportunities for people with long-term street histories. “It’s a real challenge working with folks who have not had contact with official systems. Some of them are scared; most can’t navigate the system,” she said.

Looking into the future, Misty is hopeful that one day we can make it easier for shelter-resistant individuals to get the help they need. Through the Step-Up program, that vision may turn into a reality. “The Step-Up model is an integrated housing opportunity for folks with long-term street histories. It will provide single site housing-first units, a medical respite and a 24-hour drop-in engagement center,” said Misty. “I would say that it is a missing piece in the Continuum Care in Philadelphia.”

Michael went on to college and waited tables to pay the bills. As a waiter, he found the perfect place to put his gregarious,

outgoing nature to good use. He soon had money to spare,

and enjoyed the hard working, hard partying lifestyle of the wait staff. He dropped out of college to work full-time

in fine dining restaurants. Soon after, he started using drugs

“Working at night in the service industry, you live in a carnival, and I loved it. I thought the more cocaine I did, the better waiter I was. I was wrong,” Michael said.

He eventually lost his job, and with that, his ability to pay

With the help of his case manager, Hilary, Michael moved into his own apartment in January of 2014. “Hilary worked

But Michael says Bethesda Project hasn’t seen the last of him. He has been volunteering at My Brother’s House and plans to continue no matter where he goes. “I have a story to tell and Bethesda Project is it. It’s my family.”

Since 1999 Karen and her husband Gerard have been providing about 7,000 meals each year through a network of volunteers who donate goods to Bethesda Project. As the coordinator of the “Bethesda Cooks,” Karen takes on the responsibility of providing nutritious food for the residents throughout the year.

“I’m a nutritionist by education and I worked in the food industry, so when I saw the need for providing healthy, nutritious

food, I started the Bethesda Cooks,” she says. “One day I was looking at the bulletin board at St. Norbert’s Parish when I noticed the flyer asking for food donations to Bethesda Project. From that day on, I’ve made a commitment to the men and women that Bethesda helps.”

Karen and the Bethesda Cooks provide monthly meals for each of the houses in addition to holiday meals. “Once a month four or five gals come to my house and we get cooking. I buy the meat, we make sides and desserts for special monthly dinners at the houses.”

This past Thanksgiving, the Bethesda Cooks prepared 750 meals. In addition, they provide nearly all the food for the

annual picnic. More recently, Karen and her team have also been providing soup for the guests at the Bethesda Café at Broad Street Ministry, a winter drop-in center for up to 75 guests.

“I understand what I do is a drop in a bucket,” said Karen. “But we do what we can. Honestly, it’s been a blessing for all us.”

Sierra For as long as she can remember, Sierra has struggled with depression, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Her ailments made it difficult to fit in at school, where she was relentlessly bullied. At home, her parents offered little sympathy. When she was 11, Sierra tried to kill herself for the first time. She was hospitalized, and later dropped out of school in the seventh grade.

She tried home school, but her anxiety and depression were so crippling that she was often unable to get out of bed. She became increasingly withdrawn from her friends and family. “On my 18th birthday I had an altercation with my dad. I got

302’d and he told me not to come home,” she said referring to the involuntary evaluation and hospitalization procedure. “I

hated being in the hospital and when I got out I swore I would never go back, but I also couldn’t go home.” She eventually found Bethesda Project, where she has been a resident at the North Broad residence for the last two years.

“At first it was hard. I used to never be here.” Still uncomfortable around other people, and her OCD making it unbearable

to share living spaces, Sierra would do everything she could to avoid the residence, staying outside all day and coming back only to sleep. But with hard work, and support from the Bethesda Project community, she’s managed to turn things around.

“Medication helps, but you still have to work hard and be patient. The staff here has been really patient, and talking to them has really helped me learn how to manage my illness,” Sierra says. “Now when I’m out for a long period of time, I can’t wait to come home. This is my home.”

Sierra has been working part-time and keeping busy learning how to be a responsible adult. “I’ve had to learn everything here. I’ve had to learn how to go to work, how to pay bills. I’ve had to learn how to live as an adult,” Sierra says.

And now Sierra is making plans for the future. “I want to be healthy enough to manage work full-time and then go back

to school,” Sierra says. She’s already taken some classes at Philadelphia Community College. “Bethesda Project helped me cross the line from being a kid who didn’t understand anything to being an adult who is trying to make it on her own,”

Sierra says. She’s recently reconnected with her family, and she looks forward to the day when she can finally move into her own apartment.

Sierra says, “A lot of people don’t change. A lot of people walk into the same hole every day. That’s not me. Bethesda Project has been a stepping stone for me. That’s the best thing I could have asked for.”

Johnny Johnny went to live at Bethesda North Broad in 2007 after years of living on the streets. Johnny’s physical disabilities, mental illness, and struggle with alcoholism all contributed to his homelessness.

“I grew up with an abusive father and by the time I got to my teens I was hanging with the wrong crowd,” he says. “I

ended up dropping out of school and getting my GED at 16. When I was 20 I fell off a ladder 20 feet onto a picnic table and broke my hip. The pain led me to alcohol dependence.”

Before coming to Bethesda Project, Johnny found himself living in the woods in Blackwood, N.J. He would go to a local

food pantry to get basic necessities. There he found out about Our Brother’s Place, Bethesda Project’s emergency shelter

for men. He didn’t like living in a shelter environment so he began sleeping on the Parkway. “An outreach van would come around and pick people up. One day I got on it and it took me to the Bethesda Café.” Johnny stayed at Bethesda’s winter café at Broad Street Ministry where he met staff member Misty Sparks, Director of Entry Level Programs.

“I started to help around the café mopping floors and cleaning the kitchen. Misty helped me obtain my birth certificate.

Eventually she referred me to Bethesda’s North Broad residence.” The supportive services at North Broad helped Johnny

maintain his doctors’ appointments, keep track of his medications, and connect him to additional support during episodes of relapse. He began attending an outpatient alcohol treatment program and eventually Johnny succeeded in becoming

one of the most stable residents at North Broad. Johnny was a contributing member of the community, always offering to lend a hand to staff.

With the help of his case manager, Johnny was able to move into independent housing at Bethesda’s Domenic House.

Johnny now lives in a one-bedroom subsidized unit and continues to be a productive member of the Bethesda family. “I love my apartment. I love my neighbors. I feel like I’m where I belong.”

Juan Juan has been a resident of Bethesda Bainbridge since 2010. Originally from a small town in Puerto Rico, Juan has been in Philadelphia for the last 12 years. The 47-year-old has a history of mental illness and addiction.

“When I was 15, my twin sister was brutally raped and murdered. I went off the deep end. I took vengeance into my own hands,” said Juan in his native Spanish. “I killed the men responsible for my sister’s death and I confessed.” Juan was sentenced to 36 years in prison but was released after 14 years served with good behavior.

His struggles with addiction began when he was only 11 years old. By the time he got to prison, he was hooked, and

the drugs continued to flow in the prison system. After his release, he was given a one-way ticket to Philadelphia with

only a few dollars to his name. “My family thought they were doing me a favor by sending me here but I had no one to depend on.”

Juan spent the next few years of his life living on the streets and eating from dumpsters. He had tried all kinds of drugs

from heroin to cocaine to pot to pain killers. After landing a spot in a city shelter, he was referred to Bethesda Project while taking steps to get clean. “I joined a methadone program and started working on a healthier me.”

Juan works closely with his case manager to develop short- and long-term goals. He likes to cook, a skill he learned in prison, and often shares meals with other residents. Juan takes pride in his appearance and often sports his collection of

Native American inspired jewelry. He is also adamant about keeping his room clean. “I like to take care of my things. Every little bit I own.”

Juan recently ended the methadone program and proudly says he likes staying clean. “I don’t ever want to live that life again. I’m done with the streets.”

In February Juan lost his youngest son to gun violence in Puerto Rico. Although he was completely distraught by the

news, Juan credits Bethesda Project for helping him through this tragedy. “I thank God every day for the staff at Bethesda. They’ve given me a new chance at life and have become my family and saving grace.”
