A SMILE IS WORTH 100 WORDS
2015 ANNUAL REPORT
“His cheerful demeanor seemed totally unaffected by his extremely sad personal history...
FOUNDER’S CORNER There are many beautiful smiles that I have seen in my life, but there are none more memorable than the ones so freely offered by Clifford– one of the sweetest, gentlest persons I have ever known. Perhaps it wasn’t just his smile that touched me, but the story behind it. When his mother died, Clifford was only nine years old; his father placed him with his brother Warren in foster care. It was an abusive situation, so Clifford and Warren ran away multiple times. Because of this they were declared “incorrigible” and placed in a reform school. When Warren turned 18, he joined the Army serving during the Korean War. He was captured, placed in a POW camp and died of starvation, leaving Clifford all alone in the world. Clifford, because he had a very low IQ and being consigned to a reform school, was declared a “defective delinquent.” According to Pennsylvania law at the time when he turned 18 Clifford was transferred directly to prison, where he stayed for many years – having no one to advocate for him. He had never committed a crime. After that horrible law was overturned, Clifford – a man now in his 50s – was released from prison. He loved animals and found work cleaning up the kennel for a veterinarian. Sadly, because of his gentle but vulnerable nature, he was the frequent target of harassment and muggings. To protect himself he bought a gun on the street. Unfortunately, when he called the police to report another incident of harassment, the police decided to arrest him for having a gun without a license. Through the intervention of someone at Catholic Social Services, Clifford was released and placed in one of our Bethesda Project residences – Bethesda Bainbridge. At that time my office was located there, so I got to see Clifford every day, and was always greeted by his gentle, sweet smile. His cheerful demeanor seemed totally unaffected by his extremely sad personal history. He would tell me with childlike faith at least once a week that he prayed to St. Joseph every day – “because he’s the patron of a peaceful death.” I was struck by the simplicity and humility of his prayer. His only request of heaven was that he not die violently. Given his past experience of harassments and muggings, I could sort of understand his intense desire for this one blessing from God. For the five years I was there before being transferred to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1991, he continued to remind me – at least weekly – of his one prayer request made through St. Joseph. Maybe God inspired him to remind me so frequently so that I would not forget his special intention. In 1992 I received a phone call from Philadelphia telling me that Clifford – 60 years of age – died peacefully in his sleep on March 19 – which Catholics celebrate as the feast day of St. Joseph. It seems that God could not resist Clifford’s sweet smile and his simple prayer request. Father Domenic Rossi

FROM THE INTERIM CEO Bethesda Project staff and volunteers take many photographs in the course of a year. One is struck, in these photos, by the genuine smiles of those who are part of the Bethesda Project family. When our residents and guests are asked what there is to smile about, their responses often include words like relief, feeling safe, feeling loved, and feeling cared for. The smiles also reflect security born of having a safe place to lay one’s head, and gratitude for the simple pleasure of three meals a day in a secure environment. Those smiles also bring a smile to my face. They tell me we are succeeding in discharging our most basic responsibility of caring for those who are most vulnerable in the context of a compassionate and loving family. And yet I worry. I worry That we ask too much of our staff That we struggle to pay our staff a living wage That our reach has exceeded our grasp That mental illness and addiction will be too much to overcome That we won’t have the funds to sustain Bethesda Project over time.
Bethesda Project coordinates over 5,000 volunteer visits each year. Volunteers are an important part of building mutually rewarding relationships with housing residents and shelter guests.
At the same time I am hopeful and grateful For our history of caring with kindness and compassion That we are family to one another That our men and women find the grace to overcome their fears and anxieties That our staff know our women and men by name That we remain as authentic and compassionate as our founders and early volunteers That we remain worthy of the trust of our benefactors That we focus on what people do and not their motivation For the wisdom and guidance of our Board For the sense of community that permeates our programs And for the smiles and laughter so often heard at Bethesda Project. Laughter, smiles, worry, hope, gratitude, all are part of the human condition. What we see every day is that gifts and suffering are distributed unevenly throughout the world. It is the obligation of those of us who are most blessed with resources to share those resources with those who have the least. Passing on our love and compassion through service is the essence of what it means to be family, what it means to love, and is the surest path to our own satisfaction and contentment. We at Bethesda Project are most grateful to you, our volunteers, supporters, and benefactors, for joining with us to create the conditions that bring smiles to the faces of our family members. Thank you. Angelo Sgro ACTING CEO | BETHESDA PROJECT

Bethesda Project operates 13 locations in Philadelphia.
The Philadelphia Housing Authority has over 100,000 individuals and families on its waiting list for affordable housing.
FROM THE PRESIDENT BOARD OF DIRECTORS My name is Wesley Payne, and I am honored to serve as the President of the Board of Directors at Bethesda Project. At Bethesda Project, there has always been a strong conviction in our hearts to be family with those who have none. We see it every day demonstrated by our hard working, dedicated staff members and volunteers, as they serve our guests and residents. They do so with a smile, one that says “you are welcome, you are safe here.” It is these genuine, heartwarming smiles that are the true essence and cornerstone of Bethesda Project, because nothing epitomizes family the way a smile does. Inviting and non-judgmental, it conveys to those we serve that they are understood, appreciated, and are seen as individuals of value and worth. These smiles are an ever constant reminder of hope to many who have been forlorn.
MAKING THE CASE
As the saying goes, “a smile is worth 100 words.” In my opinion it’s worth 100 good and caring words, ones that need not be spoken, but are understood by all. A smile offers a feeling of acceptance reciprocated by both the giver and receiver, instilled in their hearts forever. Bethesda Project has a long history of sharing smiles. Starting with just a few over 35 years ago, they have multiplied and continued serving as a legacy of love and family amongst all, be it guest, resident, staff, volunteer, or donor. As the Board and I continue to work towards fulfilling Bethesda Project’s mission, we shall continue to do so with a smile; one of acceptance, one of kindness, and one of continuous welcome into the Bethesda Project family. Wesley Payne PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS | BETHESDA PROJECT

Before Bethesda Project I was lost, I was dirty, and I was living on the streets of Philadelphia for 18 years. Things were bad…really bad. I was just empty inside, depressed, and angry. I had tried homeless programs and shelters prior to Bethesda Project, but none of them worked for me. Everything started to turn around when I met Sarah and Misty (Bethesda Project staff). I stayed at St. Mary’s shelter for two weeks. While I was there, I had different evaluations done and was placed at My Brother’s House (MBH). I still remember the exact day: August 17th! At My Brother’s House I’ve learned how to take care of myself. I have my own bed, a place to wash up, a place to do laundry, and three meals a day.
I always do my best to show my gratitude to Bethesda Project and to My Brother’s House
Before Bethesda Project I also suffered from my addictions, and I’m finally in a program that’s helping me work through and overcome all my obstacles. I’ve learned I’m not by myself and I have people who support me, like Misty. I am so thankful to be at My Brother’s House because so many people try to get in here, and knowing that has made me even more responsible. I always do my best to show my gratitude to Bethesda Project and to My Brother’s House, so I take my chores very seriously. I clean the kitchen every day after 5:30PM from top to bottom. I also like to help with other projects where I can, like helping different volunteers who have come in to paint. I’ve helped clean up a lot of the paint that ends up getting on the floor. I also helped design the mural that’s on the front of MBH, and meeting Isaiah Zagar was such a great memory for me. One of my favorite things about Bethesda Project is the donations because people are really showing me that they care. Before I had any sort of income, I couldn’t buy anything like clothes or food or toiletry items, and the donations really helped a lot. I think it’s such a beautiful and memorable thing how much people donate and show us that they truly care. I’m so much happier in my life now than I was last year because I’m in a completely different place. I can smile because my life has truly turned around.

Prior to Bethesda Project, I was homeless. I was dealing with men who abused me mentally, physically, and emotionally. I’ve been through a lot of abusive relationships throughout my life, and the toll of it all stressed me out, so I turned to drugs to help me cope. But it didn’t help ease my pain, it only made me more upset. I had to get out. I had to do something for myself, I had to make a choice. So I left my last relationship with no place to turn to. I started my journey knowing that I would have to carry myself and everything I had, but it was a choice I needed to make. It was nothing like I had imagined, it was so different. It took two weeks for my first placement. I was so tired of moving from place to place carrying my bags, and finding different locations, like little back alleyways just to sleep at night. For several years, I remained in the shelter system experiencing both good and bad places before coming to Bethesda Project. From the very beginning, even during my interview process, the staff at Bethesda Project were so kind to me. I still remember vividly hearing them say, “We’re going to go down to the Housing Authority with you to sign your lease.” I cried. I had gone through this struggle for so long, and my relief had finally come. When I came to Bethesda Project, I didn’t really speak to anyone, but over time I learned there are some truly beautiful people here. My family turned me away on many occasions when I needed help during my journey, and even now at Bethesda Project they don’t come to visit me, and at times it’s made me feel really sad and lonely. Through all of this, I still have a family I can turn to —my Bethesda Project family, my true family. I love the people here, we get along, and we listen to music together, we laugh; they are truly awesome.
I still have a family I can turn to — my Bethesda Project family
My favorite memories are when we all are together. I think of Christmas time, the times when we’re all together for breakfast, and bingo—that’s really my favorite, playing bingo when everybody is together! Everyone gets so excited when they win the gifts the volunteers have brought in for us. I like seeing my family just being happy. I feel like I’m a part of something here at Bethesda Project. There are plenty of days where I miss my real family, but Bethesda Project takes the place of that. It feels good knowing that I have them, and it helps me cope with my depression as well. Imagine suffering from depression and not having a family or someone who cares. That’s why I’m so glad I have my Bethesda Project family; the people here really care. There have been times where I’ve gone to the hospital for my mental illness, and my Bethesda Project family gets so concerned and they visit me. Even when I don’t want them to, they still show up to support me. Just to see someone coming through the door who really cares about you feels so good. It makes all the difference in the world.

Since I was a little kid I’ve loved the movies. I go to the movies at least once a week. It’s one of my favorite things to do; it’s what truly makes me happy. Most of my life I have always held down a job—a lot of live-in positions for close to 30 years at different places, and several jobs at various Salvation Army stores. My downfall has always been my drinking; I’ve been a heavy drinker since I was 18. I had gone through all sorts of different programs and rehabs. I’d fall off then pick myself up, then fall off again and pick myself back up again. The last time was the hardest, and I found a program that I was able to stay in much longer than any of the other programs I had stayed in. The program director became a good friend of mine, and he introduced me to Bethesda Project and helped me get into Connelly House. It was a miracle for me because I was such a hardcore drinker. I even drank in rehab, and a couple of times I got caught. It was extremely hard for me to quit.
Getting into a place like Bethesda Project has really changed my life.
Getting into a place like Bethesda Project has really changed my life. I’m getting older and I really have to watch my health. Bethesda Project goes out of their way, more than most, to really help you. Most places, you know, just give you shelter, and different rehabs give you a place to stay for a couple months, but then you really have to help yourself, and that isn’t enough for some people. Bethesda Project really goes out of their way. At Connelly House I have a place to stay and I didn’t have to pay rent for a full two years because I didn’t have any source of income—nobody does stuff like that. The environment at Bethesda Project is one of the main reasons I’ve stayed sober. I have my own room, private bathroom, refrigerator, freezer, cable TV, and I have access to a phone and gym. Nobody lives that good, I’m not even a millionaire and I have a nice beautiful place to live! I feel like I should give back a little now. For almost a year I’ve been the Connelly House representative for the Community Life Council. I take this responsibility very seriously and I feel like I’m helping to make a difference. Being at Bethesda Project I can get back to the things that really make me smile like taking pictures, and most of all the movies.

We’ve had a lot of experiences over the last four years, but the most memorable happened after we had come back several times to Bainbridge. Several of the residents had come up to us and said, “We really like it that you come, because you come back; you keep coming back. And we know that you care, because you keep coming back. Some of the volunteers we meet once, and then they never come back again; we only meet them one time. But you guys, you don’t forget us.”
We have a lot to smile about thinking about Bethesda Project.
That really touched us a lot. You don’t really think about it as much or look at it like that, but the residents really look forward to us coming back. It was really important. There have been times where we felt bad because we felt like we were encroaching on their space, especially if they’re home. I felt like that when I was working in the TV room. When I was vacuuming I’d feel bad and I’d tell them “I’ll vacuum at the commercials,” but they’d say “it’s okay, it’s okay.” And that was really nice because it’s their home, and they are welcoming. It’s such a culmination of memorable moments. Little by little the residents get to know you, get more comfortable, and start to tell you more stuff. I was working on the floor in the entry way and many of the guys were in that area talking. They started talking to me about things that they had done that were related to what I was doing. It was nice to learn more about them, it’s kind of neat. One of the residents was a little more shy, standoffish, and a little negative at times. He didn’t really want to talk to us, and he did his own thing. One day he came up to me and said, “I really want your help.” He had seen me helping other guys clean up their rooms, straighten things out, do their laundry, or make their beds. He came up and asked for help with his room. I said okay that’d be great! I helped him, and now he speaks to us all the time! At Bethesda Project you really get back way more than you give out, you really do. This is a really welcoming group and we’re really proud of them for recently winning Bethesda Project’s Golden Broom Award. We hadn’t been in to visit at Bainbridge as much as usual over the last month, but the guys realized the importance of cleaning. At times, they had asked me how to use the vacuum and they would take out the Swiffer or the mop and use it by themselves, so they really knew what they were doing. I was super proud of them that they got the stuff out on their own and cleaned up the stairwells and the hallways. I was amazed! It was great to see them following through. We have a lot to smile about when thinking of Bethesda Project. I read that a smile really evokes a lot of emotions and they can be really a good thing. It can be very welcoming, it’s polite, it can encourage somebody, it can give them reassurance, it can make people less anxious. The one thing I like most about smiling is that it’s freely given, and the residents give it back to us as much as we give it to them.

ANNUAL GALA & AUCTION
The 2015 Gala & Auction proved to be another success, raising over $270,000 for Bethesda Project! Hosted by the Philadelphia Phillies at the Diamond Club at Citizens Bank Park, the event featured entertainment from an ensemble of student musicians from the Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush, and comedian Jeff Norris. Proceeds from this event directly support Bethesda Project’s programs and services for homeless and formerly homeless individuals. We thank each attendee, volunteer, sponsor, and auction donor who made this event the second most successful Gala & Auction in the organization’s history! Special thanks to our auctioneer and Saturday Night Live alum Joe Piscopo; to legendary Flyers goalie, Bernie Parent; to Bob Kelly and Karen Hepp of FOX 29 News for hosting; and to former Pennsylvania governor, The Honorable Ed Rendell, for serving as honorary chair.
