The High Holy Days As we enter the new year 5782, we are excited to reconnect in our physical space and welcome you home to Beth Emet. Whether you’ve requested to attend in-person services or chosen to worship virtually, we come together as a community for a variety of worship options and programming to ensure that we can renew our Judaism, connect with friends new and old, and refresh our ruach (spirits).

We are excited to share our new technology from the Sanctuary which will ensure that everyone can access live services from the comfort of your own home… or backyards. Whether you choose to participate via livestream or dial-in, our goal is to make accessing services as simple as possible. Below you will find the instructions, and if you have any questions now or throughout the holidays, please call 847-869-4230 (select 0 during office hours or select 4 throughout the holidays).

As we did last year, there will also be several opportunities to gather outside for Shofar Live and Tashlich, in a manner that is consistent with current safety protocols. See back page for more information.

We also want to take this opportunity to thank you for your understanding as we navigate current conditions so we can bring our community together in the safest way possible.

Live Access: You can always find livestream services at bethemet.livecontrol.tv. Livestream is available for all services that take place in the Sanctuary, which are designated below. Other services not in the Sanctuary can be accessed through Zoom (i.e. High Holy Day Service for Families Kindergarten and Younger, Young Family Services Grades 1-3, and Adult Study). You can find the zoom links on our website or via an instructional email that will be sent prior to the holidays.

Recorded Access: All services in the Sanctuary will be recorded, and the links will be available approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of each service. You can also find the links at bethemet.livecontrol.tv under archives. For those services that are on Zoom (e.g. not in the Sanctuary), you can find the links to the recordings 30 minutes upon the conclusion of services on our website.

Audio Access Only: For those who choose to call-in to join our live services (audio only), you will find the access information on the next page.

Please note, the call-in audio is only available during live services and cannot be accessed via recordings.

Assistance If you should experience difficulties accessing services or have other questions, please call Beth Emet at 847-869-4230, and choose option 4. Your call will be forwarded to someone who can help. Technical assistance will be available during the live service times.

Machzorim / Prayer Books Beth Emet uses Mishkan HaNefesh for the evening, traditional morning services and Second Day Rosh Hashanah. For the Chavurah services a flipbook will be available on our website. If you wish to pick-up a loaner copy of either machzor (prayer book), please contact the office. Please note that this year the liturgy for the Chavurah service will not be displayed for live-stream.

FROM THE RABBI

Rabbi Andrea London Over the last several years, we have been refurbishing Beth Emet, a building that was designed when it was first built to be reminiscent of the Tabernacle, low slung and tent-like similar to the original portable sanctuary our ancestors built in the wilderness of Sinai. As we were renovating our space, we wanted to enhance the details in our building to highlight its similarity to this first sanctuary in which the Jewish people worshiped. Some of these enhancements are featured in our lobby and include copper struts and screening reminiscent of those found in the Tabernacle, donor wall plaques reflective of the colors in the Tabernacle, and the verse from the Book of Exodus that instructs the Israelites to build the sanctuary prominently featured over the couch.

Just as we were finishing our building renovations, we went into lockdown and many people in the community haven’t seen, in person, the beautiful railing that leads into the building from the parking lot since that was the last part of the building to be finished. I look forward to your being able to do so during these Holy Days. The words etched into it speak about the purposes and values of our synagogue. On the lower part of the railing there are five words prominently etched into the metal (and then repeated in smaller letters throughout). These words are Beit Tefillah—house of prayer, Beit Sefer— house of learning, Beit Knesset—house of gathering, Beit Tzedek—house of justice, Beit Hesed—house of unbounded love. All together they make up Beit Emet—house of truth, the name of our synagogue.

After the Second Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed, the synagogue became the center for Jewish life. In addition to the Temple’s role as being a place for ritual, the synagogue took on two more purposes—a place for the community to congregate and to learn Torah. These three purposes have been the cornerstone of synagogue life for nearly 2,000 4

years. When we were renovating Beth Emet, we wanted the entryway to speak to these purposes and to our values as a community.

Thus we added the words Tzedek—justice— and Hesed—unbounded love—to the three traditional purposes of synagogue life to proclaim upon entry into Beth Emet the primary importance our community places on pursuing justice and striving to bring more love into the world.

Similar to our building, the wilderness Tabernacle was built and maintained through the contributions of everyone in the community. In the last section of the Book of Exodus, many chapters are devoted to enumerating the material needs and specs for the Tabernacle and then it is constructed as the Book of Exodus concludes. At the beginning of the Book of Leviticus, the Tabernacle is consecrated for the holy purpose of being the spiritual center of the community.

Now that we are re-entering the building, it’s time for us, as our ancestors did, to consecrate it for the holy work that our community does—prayer, learning, gathering to develop relationships with each other, pursuing justice and increasing love in the world. As we each brought gifts to create our beautiful physical space, we now have an opportunity to think about how each of us can contribute to the spiritual purposes of our holy community.

Over these Holy Days, we will have some time to think about and discuss how we can uplift and consecrate our community to its sacred purpose in the coming year.

May it be a year of good health, growth, love, justice, and purpose for all of us, the whole House of Israel, and all of humanity.

Rabbi Amy Memis-Foler There’s a Chasidic story about a student who goes to his Rabbi to talk about his feelings of sadness. As they talk in front of the fireplace, the fire begins to die out until the rabbi reaches over to stoke the coals.

“Do you see,” pointed out the rabbi, “what happened when I gathered the embers close together? They came back to life. When the coals were separated, they generated little heat; but when they were close together, they received warmth from each other, and the fire was renewed.

“It is the same with people. When we are alone and separated our spirit is in danger of dying out. But when we stand close together, we get warmth and comfort from one another, and hope is renewed.”

This story inspires me as we get ready to gather in person this year for the High Holy Days. During the past 18 months we’ve been separated from one another in ways which may have led to feelings of being disconnected from our Jewish community. I can sense these feelings are changing.

It’s time to reconnect. When we can be together, albeit in smaller groups than years past to keep everyone as safe as possible, like the embers collected close again, we will feel that warmth and comfort. Understanding that members of our community might not be able to be present in person, we can still look to reconnect at this time of year. With the blessing of technology and hardworking staff and lay leaders, we are bringing our High Holy Day worship via video in real time, through

LiveControl, and in this way we will feel that sense of being together again.

It’s time to renew. When the rabbi in the story gathered the embers together, the student saw that his hope could be renewed. At the new year especially, we talk about starting with a clean slate. We acknowledge what’s behind us, and we turn toward a new year with that hope and knowledge that we can renew our Judaism. We can come back as we once were, and we can continue to grow in our Judaism.

It’s time to refresh. As the student in our story saw the gathered embers reigniting one another, he understood that his spirit need not die out. By going back and being together with his Jewish community, he could refresh his ruach, reignite his spirit. The same is true for us. The past 18 months have been a challenge for each of us on so many levels. The Jewish New Year becomes a time where we can restore our souls. During this season, when we sing and pray the prayers and do the work of teshuvah, returning to our better selves, so we can each feel our ruach refreshed.

Wishing you and your loved ones in 5782 a year of reconnection, renewal and restoration.

Karen Isaacson As you’ve seen in our High Holy Days communications, we enter 5782 with a commitment to reconnect with our community, renew our Judaism, and refresh our ruach (spirit)! I’d like to share a bit more about why these three aspects are important to Beth Emet.

Reconnect with our community: After enduring more than 18 months of pandemicrelated restrictions and challenges, we are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel [although we all wish the tunnel didn’t have the Delta variant in it]. We have endured as a congregation and are truly looking forward to reconnecting in person this fall to learn, worship, and socialize with each other.

You recently received an announcement that Bekki Harris Kaplan is taking on a new and important challenge as Director of Congregational Engagement, where she will focus on helping us reconnect and grow as a congregation.

Renew our Judaism: Each of us demonstrates being Jewish in different ways: some are passionate about social justice; others focus on their spiritual growth; others are enriched by the formal worship opportunities; many seek a Jewish education for their children and themselves; others are committed to helping

our institution thrive. There are more than 600 ways that Beth Emet’s member households express their Judaism, and in 5782, we want to enable each of us to explore and renew our Judaism.

Refresh our ruach: Over the past several years, we have transformed our building and many other aspects of Beth Emet. We have so much to be proud of, and it’s time to show our ruach – our spirit– as we celebrate our many accomplishments as a congregation and look to the future!

I am incredibly proud to be part of Beth Emet, and am honored to have steered the congregation with a spectacular team of lay leaders, clergy and staff over the past thirty months. We are fortunate to have a deep bench of leaders and I look forward to the next team of officers who will be installed in March to take us to the next level.

Ellen Feldman It has been an honor to work with the Klei Kodesh, staff, and High Holy Day task force to bring you our worship experience this year as we navigate through what is hopefully the back end of these last trying 18 months. Many volunteer and staff hours were spent to enable the congregation to worship this year in the way that is personally comfortable for you and your family, whether it be in person or at home. Improved technology, health and safety protocols for in-person worship, accessible young family options, and open and frequent communications are in place to enable our Beth Emet family to welcome in the year 5782. High Holy Day Food Drive Yom Kippur, September 16 from 9:00 - 4:30 pm Sunday, September 19 from 9:30 - 1:30 pm (First Day of Beit Sefer) Now more than ever, it is important to support the ARK, a local Jewish agency, which serves more than 4,000 people a year by providing support, shelter, and food through its pantry. Synagogue High Holy Day Food Drives provide the ARK with enough food to last through the winter. Drop off your donation in the Beth Emet parking lot on Yom Kippur, Thursday, September 16 from 9:00 – 4:30 pm and Sunday, September 19 from 9:30 - 1:30 pm. Please place your items in your trunk, and volunteers will safely take your items from your trunk to the bins. Below is a list of requested items.

Please note all food donations must be certified kosher and have an expiration date at least six months from now (Feb 2022). The ARK does not accept Del Monte or Kirkland canned vegetables.

Social Justice Coalition Work on Reparations Evening of Learning - Thursday, October 14

With US Representative, Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX 18); US Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL 9); and Pastor Michael Nabors Beth Emet’s Social Justice Coalition has a long-standing relationship with the Jewish value Tikkun Olam, repairing the world. Throughout the pandemic the Social Action Committee has continued to meet monthly, learn together, stretch and grow in our thinking, and plan ways to increasingly engage our Beth Emet community in this work around supporting racial equity.

Momentum for reparations has increased considerably since incidences of violence against Black Americans in the summer of 2020 brought race-based disparities in housing, wealth creation, education, health care and treatment under the law into focus.

Evanston has embarked upon an historic, precedent-setting effort to pay reparations for documented systemic racism, past and continuing, that has profoundly damaged Black residents of the City. A commitment to pay reparations has historically followed an implicit or explicit acknowledgement that harm has occurred to such an extent as to mandate payment to compensate those harmed.

Based on our understanding that our Jewish values morally compel us to support the need for reparations to address structural racism the Racial Justice Committee (a subset of the larger Social Action Committee) has been working with multiple community members, including those in the Black community, to build awareness and support for this important national issue in our congregation. Already, presentations

have been made to the Beth Emet community at a previous Town Hall meeting and separate discussions were held within the Social Action Committee and the Board of Trustees as well as regular meetings with Rabbis London and Memis-Foler and Karen Isaacson.

There are exciting plans in development for the fall! Mark your calendars and get ready to tune in!

These include a discussion on the evening of October 14, 2021 featuring Sheila Jackson Lee, the sponsor of H.R. 40, our own Jan Schakowsky, a cosponsor of the bill, and Pastor Michael Nabors, a leader of the Reparations Stakeholders Authority of Evanston and President of the Evanston/ North Shore NAACP. The planning committee is also developing a 3-part adult education series to provide background and current developments about the reparations movement, both nationally and in the Chicago-metro area.

LEARNING AND GROWING TOGETHER Lifelong learning is at the core of Beth Emet values. Beth Emet is a diverse community of individuals with different viewpoints, backgrounds, and a broad range of Jewish learning experiences. The Beth Emet Adult Education Program offers exciting possibilities for meeting new people, exchanging ideas, and embracing Jewish history, ritual, and culture. Our classes are taught by experienced teachers and lay leaders from Beth Emet and the larger Jewish community.

Offerings range from one-time events to yearlong classes; some have fees and scholarships are available. The Fall | Winter 5782 term features a wide range of classes and special programs. This term will begin remotely, through Zoom, and continue in person as conditions permit. Links will be provided to those registered. Classes are listed and described by starting date. Everyone is welcome to listen, learn, contribute, and share new insights with other members of the Beth Emet community.

Hinei Mah Tov: How Israeli and American Jews Have Viewed Each Other... and how liberal Jewish movements in Israel have made progress, faced opposition, and cooperated. with Rabbi Naamah Kelman and Elan Ezrachi One program | two dates, both live, on Zoom Tuesday, October 26 | 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. or Wednesday, October 27 | 7:30 - 9:00 p.m.

Elan and Naamah will reflect on their shared life journeys as an Israeli and an American who met 45 years ago: what Israel and American Jewry were like when they met; how each saw the other then; changes over the decades; their respective roles and activities; and the progress and collaboration of Conservative and Reform Judaism in Israel on issues of mutual concern.

Two breakout sessions follow. Naamah will discuss the renaissance and challenges of Jewish life in Israel through her work as a rabbi and the dean of Hebrew Union College.

Elan will focus on issues of Jewish peoplehood, IsraelDiaspora relations, and his work teaching Israelis about American Jewry.

MARCH Israel’s Security Concerns with Yossi Kuperwasser, a director of the Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center and a Brigadier General in the IDF Reserves.

Two Opportunities (Safely) for In-Person High Holy Day Observances at Designated Locations Throughout the Area Tashlich Tuesday, September 7 Tashlich is an act of T’shuvah that offers a way to express our desire to be free from sin and our hope that we will be forgiven for misdeeds. It is customary to perform this ritual at a natural body of water, and often people throw pieces of bread to represent sins. The following brief rituals will be held at: • 2:15 p.m. Emily Oaks Nature Center – 4650 Brummel Street, Skokie • 2:15 p.m. Lovelace Park – 2740 Gross Point Road, Evanston • 1:15 & 2:15 p.m. Church Street Boat Ramp – Located at the end of Church Street along the lakefront Also, Teen Tashlich for all middle and high schoolers at 2:15 pm at Beth Emet or 2:45 p.m. at the Church Street Boat Ramp.
