BETH EL GALA ADVICE COLUMN: “NOTES ON A PAPER DOILY” While traveling the world over, attending fundraising balls, benefits and galas, the prominent Glorious Gorgeous Gala Gal (formerly known as the Dinner Dance Diva) has taken time out of her busy schedule to answer some of the thousands of emails addressed to her about the upcoming Beth El Gala on March 9th.

Dear GGGG (formerly DDD), I’m still not sure about attending this year’s Beth El Gala. Although the honorees and award recipients are well-deserving, I’m just not certain it’s worth it. Please advise. – Bothered Bubbie at Beth El

Yes, those of us who are—how shall I say this—”more seasoned” indeed love to get all gussied up and have a wonderful time, but the Beth El Gala attracts lovely, enormously fun people of all ages who also enjoy a night on the town. That said, if you are still not inclined to attend, there are many other ways to show your support, such as simply taking out a journal ad, purchasing a raffle ticket, bidding on an item in the on line silent auction, or just making a donation. Every little bit helps support your magnificent shul and selfless clergy. I strongly implore you to select one of those many aforementioned options. All of the information you need can be found at bethelnr.org/gala2019. Oh, and did I mention that there will be a plethora of scrumptious desserts?

My Dearest Bubbeleh, Why of course you must attend! My motto is to never pass up the chance to attend a Gala at Beth El Synagogue Center if the opportunity presents itself. EVER. Besides the fact that it’s one of the most critical fund raisers of the year, and an important way to show support for your cherished community, your fellow Beth El congregants really know how to throw a celebration! The last time I was there, I was so impressed that I almost flipped my wig—literally.

RABBI’S MESSAGE Dear Friends, When I heard the news that the poet Mary Oliver died my heart sank. In my adult life, many well-known people have died, but very few of their deaths have felt personally painful for me. For instance, Amos Oz died about one month ago Rabbi David Schuck and the loss for the Jewish and Gentile world is immense. His writing shaped my relationship to Israel, my ideological commitments to Zionism, and my passion for literature in significant ways. I found myself rereading his work in the days after his death, feeling worried about the impact of his death on Israeli society. Oz was not just a literary giant, he was the moral conscience of so many Israelis and Jews who love Israel, a voice full of compassion, intellectual honesty, and an unyielding ideological commitment to the Jewish State. I wonder who is waiting in the wings to carry his mantle forward, and there aren’t many who come to mind. In this sense, his death feels weighty.

Oliver’s death, on the other had, feels personal to me. She has been far less influential in my intellectual life than Oz, but her poetry

has given expression to so many feelings that I carry with me, feelings that my own words could never quite capture, or even approximate.

A gifted poet helps us understand our own experiences better, or at least gives voice to something that we believed could only be felt prior to discovering their words. In some bizarre, almost childish way, I felt that one day, Mary Oliver and I would become friends. I probably already felt that we were friends, as her work excavated so much of my inner life for/ with me. I am immesely grateful for her clarifying voice in my life. I will share a few passages of her work that have influenced my inner life and shaped my work as a rabbi.

In her poem “The Uses of Sorrow,” she writes, Someone I loved once gave me/ a box full of darkness./ It took me years to understand/ that this, too, was a gift. This one poem gives voice to something with which so many of us struggle. All humans suffer; pain is a feature of life and is inescapable. Here, Oliver reassures us that if we are patient and remain vigilantly self-reflective, the darkness that grips our life can eventually become an invaluable teacher, a gift that can make us more compassionate and wiser. As a rabbi, this has profoundly influenced the way I discuss the struggles that people share with me, let alone my own.

I take comfort in knowing that Mary’s presence in my life will not end despite her death, though I admit to feeling a deep sorrow that her pen will not touch paper again. So many of her words and explorations of life have entered my soul, and thus, will remain present in the way I see the world and the work that I do as your rabbi.

I will end this column with her poem “Praying,” which captures so much of what I try to teach every day: It doesn’t have to be/ the blue iris, it could be/ weeds in a vacant lot, or a few/ small stones; just/ pay attention, then patch/ a few words together and don’t try/ to make them elaborate, this isn’t/ a contest but the doorway/ into thanks, and a silence in which/ another voice may speak.

While it may seem obvious to us that we pray towards Jerusalem, that hasn’t always been so. The Talmud tells of a number of different traditions, with a variety of opinions of the direction in which we should pray. How did it get to be this way, and why might it matter for us?

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE day that we began construction, we held the funeral for Howard Loewentheil in the Crystal Ballroom. It is poignant that his funeral was held in the Crystal Ballroom instead of the Main Sanctuary due to the construction in the Main Sanctuary that will be in both his and his wife Leonora’s honor. Our renovated sanctuary will take Mark Seidenfeld on even more meaning as a living tribute to Howard Loewentheil and the generosity of his family.

As we look ahead, our 65th Annual Gala is only a few weeks away, on Saturday evening, March 9th, beginning at 8:00 pm, when we will be honoring our President’s Ne’emanim Service Award recipients Jodi and Rob Scheinfeld; Lapid Award recipients Ellen and Rick Barlis; and our honorees Marjorie Seidenfeld and yours truly. It will be a wonderful celebration of our community, so I hope to see you all there. And as our second largest fundraiser of the year, even if you can’t join us on the 9th, I hope you’ll participate in a meaningful way by buying an ad, a raffle ticket, or making a donation. The funds raised allow us to continue our essential work for the benefit of all our members and the larger community around us.

It’s a new year and we are off and running! January was a busy month. As I write this, we just had our Youth and Family Shabbat.

It was a wonderful gathering of kids of all ages and from all schools in our community who led Shabbat morning services from shacharit, to Torah and Haftarah reading, and giving the D’var Torah. We were joined by the heads of the Jewish Day Schools in our area, and it was a beautiful gathering of our community. Major nachas was shepped! And, by the time this Bulletin comes out, we will have had two additional special weekends—Shabbat Shira/Ramah Shabbat with special musical guest Josh Warshawsky, followed by USY Emek Kinnus, a Shabbat gathering, hosted by Beth El, of over 150 teens from across Westchester and Rockland counties. Josh Warshawsky, the “voice of Ramah” and one of the greatest Jewish musical talents performing today, will surely have enhanced the ruach and joy of the weekend, culminating with his special album release concert on Saturday night.

The New Year also brought a new beginning in the physical and spiritual life of our shul. On January 7th we began construction on the renovation of our sanctuary. This is an exciting milestone as we move to make our sanctuary more intimate and our services more meaningful, spiritual, and song filled. But this milestone was marked with sadness as well. Howard Loewentheil, the patriarch of the Loewentheil family, whose generosity is making our sanctuary renovation possible, passed away two days before. And on the same

OPEN BEIT MIDRASH: FEBRUARY Each week (on alternating Tuesdays and Thursdays), Open Beit Midrash attendees will study Jewish texts—ranging from Chassidic thought to Jewish law—with Beth El’s Rabbi David Schuck and Rabbi Zach Sitkin as well as Rabbi Ethan Linden, the executive director of Ramah Berkshires. Each Rabbi will focus on a different topic each week and you can choose which session you’d like to attend. In addition to the weekly classes, scholars from around the NY area will teach once a month on topics related to their respective fields—from prayer and ethics to contemporary Jewish issues.

OPEN BEIT MIDRASH: SCHOLAR VISIT Transgender and Halakha: Exploring Legal Boundaries in the 21st Century

Rabbi Jeffrey S. Fox, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivat Maharat, was the first graduate of Yeshivat Chovevei Torah. Upon graduation he served as the Rabbi of Kehilat Kesher: The Community Synagogue of Tenafly and Englewood for seven years. In Rabbi Fox’s tenure at Kesher, the community grew three-fold from thirty families to nearly one hundred. During that time Rabbi Fox also taught at Yeshivat Chovevei Torah as well as the Florence Melton Adult Education School in Bergen County. He also served on the board of the Synagogue Leadership Initiative of the UJA of NNJ. Rabbi Fox is a Senior Rabbinic Fellow of the Shalom Hartman Institute and has also been a member of the faculty of the Drisha Institute, the Florence Melton Adult Education School in Westchester County, and Yeshivat Hadar.

Issues in Contemporary Israel with Rabbi Molly Karp

Talmud from the Inside Out: A Class for the Inquiring Mind

Today’s State of Israel is a wonderful and challenging place.

While Israelis have freedoms that are unheard of in the Middle East, there are many issues that arise out of the social and religious diversity of the modern state, the pluralism of World Jewry, and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. This course will explore issues such as religious freedom and pluralism for Jews in Israel, conversion to Judaism, and the Law of Return, the rights and challenges of the Israeli LGBTQ community, the Rabbinate and the State, the challenges of the Israeli system of electing its government, Women of the Wall, and more.

This course will be responsive to current events in Israel and student interests. Materials will be supplied electronically by the instructor along with suggestions for additional optional reading. No previous knowledge is needed.

To one’s enemy? To his animal?

We all like to help. What about helping those who don’t wish to help themselves, and want us to do the work for them? Or an enemy? Or his animal? We will study the Talmudic text on its own terms, without preconceived notions.

Our goal is not information, but immersion—an opportunity to “plug in” to the process of learning. That means not to read what someone else tells you that the Rabbis (supposedly) said, but to see it inside and experience it for yourself without intermediaries.

All levels are welcome, just bring a friendly disposition, an inquiring mind, and a desire to think.

(3) individuals with the wherewithal to help families offset costs or provide a brief respite for family caretakers; and (4) those who would like to participate in planning programs and inviting speakers to address the topic of mental illness.

Reaching out to individuals who want to draw closer to Judaism, including individuals with a mental illness, comports with Keruv’s mandate of inclusion. The Keruv Committee will therefore try its best to plan for programs and speakers that destigmatize and, step by step, create an honest, supportive environment for those impacted by mental illness. To that end, we are proud to announce that on March 17th, at 12:00 noon, Keruv is sponsoring a Mental Health Awareness Program that will take place at Beth El in two separate gatherings—one for adults, the other, in conjunction with Director of Teen Engagement Bekkah Gold, for Religious School students 12 years old and up.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness in Westchester (NAMI Westchester) offers a program called Ending the Silence, described on the NAMI Westchester website (www.nami.org) as “…an engaging presentation that helps audience members learn about the warning signs of mental health conditions and what steps to take if you or a loved one are showing signs of a mental illness.” Ending the Silence is presented at schools and religious institutions. According to coordinator Sharon McCarthy, the program has elicited positive responses from teens and parents who, for the first time, were able to discuss symptoms, suffering, and how to move forward.

Nina Luban and Elise Richman, Keruv Committee Co-Chairs

On the first day of the new year, congregants who had previously expressed interest in joining a Beth El Mental Health Task Force received an email from Rabbi Schuck. The email outlined the Rabbi’s proposal for organizing these 30+ individuals into four teams that, together, will make the synagogue a safe, productive space for open discussion about living with mental illness. This stigmatized illness impacts over 40% of our country’s adult population and an unknown percentage of our children.

Rabbi Schuck proposed teams that call on a variety of skills, experiences, and resources our community brings to bear: (1) mental health professionals willing to share their expertise; (2) individuals who have experienced or been impacted by mental illness to guide and support others;

Research has shown that NAMI Ending the Silence for Students is effective in changing middle and high school students’ knowledge and attitudes toward mental health conditions and toward seeking help.

• Ending the Silence for Families: 1-hour presentation for parents and primary caregivers that includes warning signs, facts and statistics, how to talk with your child and how to work with school staff.

Sisterhood Scene: Torah Fund Brunch Mark your calendar for Sunday morning, March 31st, at 11:00 am, as we honor two very deserving Sisterhood members, Rita Kaufman and Susan Morris, and support Conservative seminaries around the world through the work of Torah Fund.

Both Rita and Susan have been dedicated Sisterhood members for many years and have worked hard in many capacities to help support our synagogue. Most recently, both women have been Torah Fund Vice Presidents, directing our efforts to spread the word about the importance of supporting the seminaries of the Conservative movement. This year’s pin features the word Atid— future—indicating the importance of our work to ensure the future of Conservative Judaism for generations to come.

All funds donated to Torah Fund go to support the education of our future clergy and educators in five seminaries: The Jewish

Theological Seminary in New York; Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies in Los Angeles; Schechter Institutes in Jerusalem; Seminario Rabinico Latinoamericano in ATID Buenos Aires; and Zacharias Frankel Rabbinical College in Potsdam, Germany. Yes, that’s right, the Conservative Movement has a seminary in Germany! Your donations can have a great impact on Jewish education, not just here at home, but throughout the world.

NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS Tu BiShevat literally means the fifteenth day of the month of Shevat, and it usually falls in January or February. It may be winter for us, but it is the end of the rainy season in Israel and the time when sap has started rising in the trees. In the Nursery School, we celebrate Tu BiShevat as the “birthday of the trees.”

This year we transformed the Youth Lounge into a “Tu BiShevat Expo.”

Children’s natural sense of amazement, wonder, and joy of discovery was evident as they entered the room and began to explore the variety of activities that awaited them.

All activities focused on or used materials

directly connected to the earth and trees and children independently explored and self-selected what they wanted to engage in.

Soil was the basis for a number of activities as they scooped, patted, and poured from one vessel to another. There were no limits to the sensory experiences nor to the mess. Children used leaves, greenery, pine cones and flowers on overhead projectors and light tables to experiment with light and shadows. They used a variety of wooden loose parts to build on a mirrored base and built structures with large wooden blocks. Matching the picture of a fresh fruit to the dried fruit needed a lot of “concentration” and focus as the cards

were turned over. Cheerios were strung on pipe cleaners (many were eaten too) to make new bird feeders and parsley seeds were for planted in small peat pot with the hope they’ll be ready or Pesach.

A birthday celebration must have special treats and this one had a few very colorful ones. Orange dried apricots and mangoes, green dried kiwi, brown dates and raisins, and yellow dried apples.

Tu BiShevat is an important holiday for today’s children. As our awareness of the environment becomes more essential to the future of the human race, Tu BiShevat takes on more of a global importance. It is not just about spring, trees, and rebirth in Israel; it is about respecting, appreciating and taking care of nature. Any activities we can do to foster these values transmit the true meaning of Tu BiShevat to our children.

Celebrating Tu BiShvat as a school has given the children a deep sense of the “Kedushah/ sacredness” of trees. We believe that if the trees could talk, we are certain this would be exactly the kind of celebration they would request.

“Imagine if trees gave free wi fi. We’d all be planting like crazy, It’s a pity they only give us the oxygen we breathe.”

YOUTH & FAMILY ENGAGEMENT A Note from Bekkah…

Looking forward to seeing you at our events this month!

This year’s Annual Youth & Family Engagement Shabbat Weekend was really something special. Beginning with a meaningful Shabbat dinner with 200 of our friends, and continuing with an interactive P’sukei D’zimra, a youth-led Torah service and tefillot, a full-on play about the parasha put together by our Parasha Players (did you see their t-shirts?!), and more opportunities for kids of all ages to be engaged in the service, it was really a beautiful weekend.

That, mixed with the energy and excitement of hosting about 150 teens for Emek USY Kinnus two weeks later made for a joyous January indeed. Thank you to all of our staff, parents, teens, children, and partner organizations who helped make this past month an immense success.

As we enter the month of February, we want to remind you about our department’s Annual Purim Campaign. Each year, Beth El helps our members fulfill an important mitzvah of Purim, Matanot Le’Evyonim – helping those whose needs are greater than our own, by contributing to major tzedakah organizations and building our own Youth Community.
