We are also working to increase our synagogue representation at AIPAC’s policy conference. The policy conference is a wonderful way to learn about the ways in which we can advocate for a strong and secure Israel through the political process here in America, re-energize our Israel activism through experiencing the thrill of sharing three days with 19,000 Zionists (mostly fellow Jews), and learning about many of the cutting edge initiatives in the sectors of technology, culture and arts, medicine, religious life, and politics. For the last two years Bekkah Gold has brought a cohort of our high school students, and this year, she and Rabbi Sitkin will do the same (if your child is interested in going, please reach out to Bekkah). I hope that you will consider joining us this year; Rabbi Sitkin, Bekkah and I are excited to have that time together with you in DC from March 24-26th.

Finally, we are planning two trips to Israel. There will be a first timers trip in the summer of August 2020, and an off the beaten path trip for those who have already been to Israel but would like to return.

That trip will either take place in December of 2020 or the Spring of 2021. Details about both of these trips will soon be available to the community and I hope that you will consider joining us for the trip that is right for you.

I want to encourage you to look out for an iEngage Israel Education series that was developed by the Hartman Institute as well as the programs that our Israel Affairs Committee plans to help educate and deepen our relationship to Israel. These are all efforts that we are undertaking to strengthen our connection to Israel, and I am thrilled about the ways in which they will each impact our synagogue community.

Dear Friends, As we enter into our last month of winter here, Israel prepares for a new election that offers lots of interesting possibilities for the political direction of the country. We watch with curiosity as things unfold.

Here at home we are always thinking about our connection to Israel. One of the Rabbi David Schuck clear values that was affirmed during Journey (our visioning and strategic planning process) was the centrality of Israel to the Jewish people and our identity as a synagogue. We will continue to strengthen our connection to Israel and work hard to make sure that the conversation and educational opportunities are nuanced and represent a diversity of Zionist visions. I am excited to share a number of these efforts.

I am excited to announce that we have an exceptionally special opportunity available to us in December of 2019. Encounter, a non-partisan organization dedicated to exposing American Jewish leaders to the multitude of Palestinian perspectives on the Israeli Palestinian conflict, has offered to run a trip for our synagogue. The trip will be a four-day intensive during which we will meet with many Palestinians in Palestinian cities and villages. We will meet with people from diverse educational, political, and socio-economic backgrounds. As a participant and then a year later, a facilitator on this program, I found that their stories and perspectives gave me a far more nuanced understanding of the conflict and as such, they strengthened my Zionism.

Encounter’s mission is to “enable deeply committed Jewish influencers to encounter firsthand the people, perspectives and challenges at the heart of the conflict. Our programs inspire new perspectives, new conversations and new approaches to the conflict.

We are building a diverse Jewish leadership network across religious and political lines.” Encounter only leads trips for American Jewish leaders, but they have agreed to lead a trip for our synagogue, and as such, this is a very unique opportunity for our synagogue. I am excited to lead this trip with the Encounter staff.

We will have an informational meeting about this trip in March, so please look out for the details. I will speak about my experience

Our community is diverse; people have varying degrees of knowledge about Jewish text, tradition, worship, and access to Hebrew vocabulary. Since Jewish prayer assumes a certain amount of background exposure and knowledge, this service is intended to create an access point into prayer for those who may feel lost and/or alienated from our typical prayer services. This service is an introductory exploration of the prayer service. Each prayer will be studied in depth and read in English to gain a basic understanding of its meaning and intent. We will discuss the basic physical mechanics of each prayer when necessary.

It is our hope that over time, everyone in our community will be able to enter the sanctuary with confidence and feel at home.

Jay Lerman, a Brooklyn native, moved to New Rochelle upon his discharge from the US Air Force in 1975, and soon joined Beth El. After the passing of his mother in 1992, Jay said Kaddish at morning and evening services.

He found the members of the daily minyan to be warm and welcoming, and has continued attending the minyan ever since. With Cantor Uri Aqua's guidance Jay learned to lead the three daily services and to read Torah. He and wife, Barbara, feel fortunate to have a growing family. Mark and wife, Diana, live outside of Boston with son Joseph. Alicia, her husband Yoel, and sons Benjamin and Jacob live in New Rochelle and are Beth El members.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE If you were lucky enough to be at Beth El for Shabbat on January 25th – 26th, you experienced the energy of 150 Jewish teens who gathered at our shul for the USY Emek Divisional Kinnus. The Emek division includes Westchester, Rockland, and Orange counties, and from across these counties USYers gathered for a Shabbat experience filled with prayer, learning, socializing, spirituality, and incredible ruach (spirit). The teens led our Friday night services and enjoyed Shabbat dinner together at Beth El followed by what they call “Ruach”—the most lively, wild, and inspiring singing of z’mirot. We also had the privilege of the teens leading our services for Shabbat morning and listening to insightful words of Torah from them reflecting a maturity, sensitivity and depth of knowledge way beyond their years. They hung out at Beth El for all of Shabbat, learning together, sharing their ideas during sichot (discussion groups) and just basking in the warmth of a Shabbat experience together. The teens began to say goodbye to Shabbat with “Slo-ach” (slow Ruach). If “Ruach” is the wildest, liveliest singing possible, “Slo-ach” is its soulful, calming, spiritual sibling. Sitting on the floor in one crowded circle, they sang their hearts outs in deep connections with each other. Shabbat ended with a Havdalah service like no other I’ve ever attended. The USYers who make up the Divisonal Executive Board of Emek, as well as the co-chairs of the weekend and our own Beth El USY Chapter President, each held a candle for Havdalah. One by one they expressed gratitude for others who have impacted their lives. The compassion and appreciation

reflected in their words proved that the divine spark truly does exist in each of us. There wasn’t a dry eye among us few adults who were lucky enough to be flies on the wall during the ceremony. And after this incredibly moving Havdalah, the teens danced the night away in the Fayer Mark Seidenfeld Ballroom to everything from pop and hip hop to some of their Israeli favorites. And of course (God forbid they go hungry!), an awesome barbecue buffet and dessert bar kept their energy going all night long.

This incredible weekend couldn’t have been possible without the amazing leadership of our very own Bekkah Gold, the many teens who planned all the programming for months before, including Beth El’s own Stephen Bartell, Rel/Ed (Religion/Education) VP, Jonah Seidenfeld, Mem/Kad (Membership/Kadima) VP, and Ilana Shechter, Beth El Chapter President. Rabbi Sitkin and the rest of our staff stepped up to insure the teens were supported. And Donna Bartell repeated her incredible performance from the last time Beth El hosted a USY Kinnus and organized all the meals and a team of volunteers who made the USYers’ experience in our community welcoming, comfortable and delicious! Kol HaKavod and our deepest appreciation to everyone who made USY Emek Kinnus the incredible success it was.

Why did I spend my whole article this month on USY Kinnus?

Because it embodies everything good about our community and our future. Watching 150 teens daven together, learn together, laugh together, support and appreciate one another, all while deepening their Jewish identity, makes me optimistic and hopeful about the future of our community and Judaism. It was a reminder of the tireless efforts our clergy and staff put in to educating and guiding our children and fostering in them ahavat yisrael, love of Israel, Judaism and our people. And the outpouring of support from the community—whether it was working meals, setting or cleaning up, or housing teens for the weekend—showed what we can accomplish when we give of ourselves and come together. Our youth, with their unbridled enthusiasm, optimism, and energy, once again reminded us of the joy of Judaism and what’s possible through the blessing of community. Can’t wait for the next kinnus at Beth El!!

JACOB BURNS FILM FESTIVAL April 2nd to April 17th

This two-week festival is the largest annual Jewish event in Westchester. Last year, close to 9,000 tickets were sold. The festival brings not only the best new Jewish films to Westchester every spring, but also an extraordinary array of top-notch speakers and other programming. OPEN BEIT MIDRASH: MARCH Each week (on alternating Tuesdays and Thursdays), Open Beit Midrash attendees will study Jewish texts—ranging from Chassidic thought to Jewish law—with Beth El’s Rabbi David Schuck and Rabbi Zach Sitkin as well as Rabbi Ethan Linden, the executive director of Ramah Berkshires. Each Rabbi will focus on a different topic each week and you can choose which session you’d like to attend. In addition to the weekly classes, scholars from around the NY area will teach once a month on topics related to their respective fields—from prayer and ethics to contemporary Jewish issues.

We begin at 7:30 p.m. with drinks and food followed by learning promptly at 8:00 p.m.

OPEN BEIT MIDRASH: SCHOLAR VISIT Authentic Jewish Spirituality Even for People Who Think There Isn’t Any

Dr. Lawrence A. Hoffman was ordained as a rabbi in 1969, received his Ph.D. in 1973, and has taught since then at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, in New York. From 1984 to 1987, he directed its School of Sacred Music as well. In 2003, he was named the first Barbara and Stephen Friedman Professor of Liturgy, Worship and Ritual. He teaches classes in liturgy, ritual, spirituality, theology, and synagogue leadership. For over forty years, he has combined research, teaching, and a passion for the spiritual renewal of North American Judaism. Rabbi Hoffman has written or edited over forty books, and his articles have appeared in eight languages, on four continents. In Fall 2017, Synergy, the synagogue arm of New York Federation/UJA honored Rabbi Hoffman for his pioneering work in synagogue transformation.

KERUV* KORNER: "HIDDEN" As the longer days hint at spring, I think of Purim. My Hebrew name is Esther, so I always felt a special affinity for this holiday. I was taught in Hebrew School that the name Esther was derived from the Hebrew root for “hidden” or “in secret.” Later I discovered at the Israeli Museum that unlike her Hebrew name Hadassah, Esther was probably a Persian name, as in the Goddess Ishtar. That seems more likely to me, but the message remains the same. Mordechai (think Persian God, Marduk) and Esther rightfully feared exclusion or worse if they did not hide their Jewish identities. By hiding, Esther could gain access to the King. Only after Ahasuerus got to know Esther/ Hadassah did he come to recognize and prize her value.

It took courage for Esther to “out” herself. She did so after taking steps to assure that she would be accepted. The same is true to this day. We each have aspects of ourselves we keep hidden in certain contexts, until we feel confident that we’ll be accepted. It is no different at Beth El. For years, intermarriages were hidden and not discussed out of fear that families would be judged instead of accepted. In response, our “Let’s Talk About It” group meetings were convened, giving individuals the opportunity to talk openly about their experiences and to recognize how many of our families include members who are not Jewish. Our next “Let’s Talk About It” meeting is on March 11. (See box below right.)

Individuals also often hide their emotional and behavioral disorders. “Ending the Silence” is an upcoming program, sponsored

by Keruv and provided by the National Alliance for the Mentally

Ill, that we hope will educate us, lessen stigma and embolden affected members and their children to come forward so that we both can support them and benefit from all they contribute to our community. This wonderful program is being held at Beth El on Sunday, March 17. (See cover story.)

On Purim we traditionally hide behind masks and drink until we cannot distinguish between Haman and Mordechai. Perhaps this is a way to ensure that no one feels judged or excluded. We can accomplish this goal in another less dramatic way. Children who are unable to participate in the general Purim Carnival due to special needs, are invited to come with their families at 4:45 pm on Wednesday, March 20th, 30 minutes before the official start time, so that they can participate when it is quiet and unhurried. For children who cannot tolerate the later Megillah reading or other services, we have a Kulanu Purim Shabbat Experience on Friday evening, March 22. (See page 2.) This is a casual fun way for everyone in the family to participate. To get a sense of what it’s like, see the photo of our last Kulanu Tu BiShevat Havdalah Experience, below left.

When Esther revealed her Jewish identity, not only did she get the help she needed, she saved Persia from losing all that the Jewish community contributed throughout its empire. Thereafter we read in the Megillah that Jews “took upon themselves and upon their seed and upon all who joined with them” (Esther 9.27) to celebrate Purim…sounds pretty inclusive to me. Join us!

As Purim approaches, we'll explore Megillat Esther's secondary female charachter, Vashti, a woman without the glory of the heroine, nor the narrative expanse of the protagonist; yet in many ways, it is her action is the catalyst for the entire story.

Sisterhood Scene Over the last few weeks I’ve been thinking about how we all communicate. In February you should have received our invitation to a Tea Party.

Hopefully you made yourself a cup of piping hot tea. Now all we ask in return is that you send in your donation to the Shiva Dinner Fund to Susan Morris so that we can continue to provide a Shabbat Dinner to our Beth El members during the week they are sitting Shiva. This particular Sisterhood Project was sent to you via “Snail Mail” through the United States Post Office.

We get in touch with you in other ways, too. The Sisterhood Scene is this column found (usually) on page 11 in the monthly Bulletin, which comes from Beth El also via the Postal Service and is also available on line. Along with the article there are usually boxes, on page 10 and/or 11, highlighting information about upcoming and ongoing programs. In the center of the Bulletin is the Beth El calendar for the month. All of our events are listed on the calendar, too.

In the Beth El lobby, in the racks near the main office, you can find copies of our Sisterhood Calendar for 2018-2019. You will also find flyers advertising our upcoming programs, which include: • March 19th An Evening with James Maisano, Director of Westchester County Consumer Protection Department; • March 30th – Sisterhood Shabbat;

• March 31st – Torah Fund Brunch, honoring Rita Kaufman and Susan Morris; • May 30th – Sisterhood Spring Gala honoring Carole Graham.

Every Friday Beth El sends out Shabbat Announcements via e-mail. Printed copies of these announcements are available outside the sanctuary on Saturday morning. In this communication Sisterhood programs are listed. Changes and updates are included so that everyone is kept up-to-date on our activities as well as all the activities at Beth El. We do try to reach out to all our members to keep them informed. However, we found that some of your information is not up-to-date. Last summer, when we sent out our Sisterhood Scene Newsletter and dues envelope, several came back to us stamped “undeliverable.” This year more of our interaction has been by e-mail but if you didn’t include a current e-mail address on your dues envelope, our message to you bounces back to us. We can’t reach you if we don’t have current information.

There is one more very important way that we can communicate.

We can reach out and say “Hello” and start a conversation. I look forward to seeing you at Beth El and establishing connections with you so that you will be part of Sisterhood.

I sit here wondering—hoping—that the cold is behind us and we are moving closer to spring. After some time to refresh, we are excited about Spring Fling, this year’s Purim Palooza, and the Megillah Reading coming up soon, along with a Midnight Run, the AIPAC Policy Conference, some Krav Maga lessons, and so much more.

As we get into the month of March, we round the corner for the last few days of our department’s Annual Purim Campaign.

Each year, Beth El helps our members fulfill an important mitzvah of Purim, Matanot Le’Evyonim, helping those whose needs are greater than our own by contributing to major tzedakah organizations and building our own Youth Community. We have recently re-evaluated the way we handle notification of general donations made to Beth El. We will only mail out acknowledgement letters for donations of $36 or greater made to our various funds.
