About this month’s scholar: Dena Weiss is Rosh Beit Midrash and Director of Fellowship Programs at Hadar, where she teaches Talmud, Midrash and Hasidut. Dena earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies from New York University, and a Master of Arts degree in Theology from Harvard Divinity School. She has studied and taught in a variety of Jewish educational settings including Drisha, Midreshet Lindenbaum, and Pardes. She currently serves as the editor-in-chief of the Mima’amakim journal of Jewish religious art.

RABBI’S MESSAGE Rabbi Yannai said: The clauses of the Torah were not given as clear-cut [edicts]. Rather, concerning each clause that the Holy One imparted to Moses, He would impart forty-nine reasons to [rule] “pure” and forty-nine reasons to [rule] “impure.”

Dear Friends, I am eager to have the opportunity to reflect a bit on one of the most exciting outcomes of our visioning work thus far.

Through our many conversations, it has become abundantly clear that we have a variety of religious and spiritual needs Rabbi David Schuck within our community. Judaism, and spiritual life in general, is not a one-sizefits-all endeavor. People with different Jewish backgrounds and experiences have a diversity of needs. As such, one of the questions that Beth El must answer is whether we feel a responsibility to meet those diverse needs. I believe that we must.

One of the strengths of Conservative Judaism is that it has always built Jewish life around the principle that there are multiple legitimate ways to live a halachically Jewish life (a life guided

by Jewish Law). For example, there are different approaches to egalitarianism throughout Conservative synagogues while at the same time, some of our synagogues are non-egalitarian (though very few at this point!). Some Conservative synagogues read the full kriyah (Torah reading) while others read one third of it (the triennial Torah reading). The list goes on. What is right for one community does not make it right for another.

This variety in our religious practices is one of the strengths that the Conservative Movement has offered American Jewish life, and it emerges from an early rabbinic principle. The Midrash on Psalms (compiled since 200 CE) teaches the following:

In other words, our sages understood that there are multiple ways to understand God’s will; the notion that only one interpretation can be true is foreign to classic rabbinic thought. Beth El has an opportunity to actualize this principle by creating multiple approaches to religious life that differ in some expressions, but share the common denominator of fidelity to religious and spiritual depth. What we do will always reflect the halachic boundaries of our movement, but as we know, within those boundaries there is a great deal of room for innovation.

The notion that a synagogue can provide different religious and spiritual experiences is an authentic expression of Jewish life and when realized, and it can invigorate a community. Rabbinic Judaism was born out of the belief that there are multiple ways to express our relationship to God, one another, and the world in which we live. I am incredibly excited to find ways to make that vision a reality here at Beth El Synagogue Center. We will continue to experiment with innovation, and in time, as a clear a vision emerges for an energized traditional service alongside something new, we will share that vision with the entire community. I am so excited for our future together!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: THE ANNUAL REPORT As I wrap up my first year as President of Beth El, I want to begin with a preemptive apology. There are so many things that go on at Beth El and so many staff and members who do so much to make us thrive. I have no doubt I will forget to mention all of them and for that I apologize.

Let’s start off with where things stand. As of April 30th, we have 591 full time members and 48 sustaining members for a total of 639 members. Since July 1, 2017, the beginning of our current fiscal year, we’re down 22 full time members. These numbers are consistent with the trend not only of our own shul over the last years, but a reflection of the trend at most Conservative shuls across the country. A bright spot, however, is that although we’ve experienced a net decline over the last year, we’re happy that during that same time period since July 1st, we had 26 new family members join Beth El. At a point in time when people, particularly younger people, are moving away from institutional religion and institutions in general in favor of more a la carte experiences, we should be heartened that these new families have made the choice to become a part of our community. However, the overall trend of declining membership at Beth El, as well as the other Conservative shuls right in our own backyard and across the nation warrants our attention and action.

Our Membership Committee, chaired by Lisa Patchen and Vanessa Kerchner, is continually working to engage prospective members and create inviting programs and experiences to foster relationships that will connect them to our community—from small get-togethers and Shabbat dinners, to Shabbat and holiday packages and ongoing communication, our Membership Committee, together with Erica Leventhal, is working hard to attract new members and welcome them into our special community. But as Mark Silver always reminds us, we’re all members of the Membership Committee. We should each be ambassadors and cheerleaders for Beth El, inviting people to learn about the blessings of being a part of our community.

To confront these and other challenges, we launched our strategic visioning initiative, “Journey: Building a Vibrant Future Together.” Over the last 6 months, our Visioning Team, which is made up of approximately 60 people representing a cross section of our congregation, has been engaged in intensive efforts. This has included the many Listening Forums held at Beth El for multiple demographics, and some opened to all, to learn about our members’ concerns and hopes, as well as the many Listening Journeys to other synagogues, companies, and other institutions to learn from their experiences of how they successfully met the challenges they were facing. This has been an extremely informative and enlightening phase of our visioning process, focused on learning and assessment and we are excited to move towards the next phase of the process. We have several groups that will be focusing on specific issues that have consistently come up in our Listening Forums and other meetings, such as our building and physical plant, as well as our dues model and finances. I want to thank our Planning Team, who has been leading this effort and putting in countless hours of work—Salo Aisenberg, Abe Bartell, Jody Burton, Barbara Cohen, Rabbi Schuck, Erica Leventhal, and Abby Wise. And, a special shout out goes to Donna Bartell, who has provided incredible logistical support of the many Journey meetings. Finally, I want to acknowledge and express

our appreciation for the generosity of Ellen and Graham Arad who are helping to fund Journey in memory of their parents.

Journey is a long-term project and is expected to last through the end of the year. We are already in a “season of experimentation.” After the overwhelmingly Mark Seidenfeld positive reaction to the spiritually uplifting Selichot service we had this past Rosh HaShanah, our clergy have worked hard to introduce new and inspiring services and other experiences. Our monthly Contemplative Service, a combination of singing, reflections, readings and mindful meditation, has attracted many people who are seeking an experience different from the traditional Shabbat morning service. Our Niggun HaLev service has infused our traditional service with increased communal singing in a more intimate space that has shown us how tradition and innovation can combine to create new and moving experiences that remain true to halakha and our traditional roots. Together with the talented Debra Sacks Mintz and Jack Klebanow, our clergy have built upon the “Singing as a Spiritual Practice” sessions, which began last fall. In addition, they’ve introduced a monthly Friday Night Spiritual Singing Service, and several “Melaveh Malkahs,” bringing us together on a Saturday night for food, drink and spirited singing. These different encounters have clearly tapped in to a desire for deeper spirituality, increased singing and more intimate, meaningful experiences.

Similarly, our Open Beit Midrash has revealed a thirst for open learning. Rabbi Sitkin has developed an incredible program of ongoing learning that our community has clearly come to love.

Weekly, on alternating Tuesday and Thursday nights, we come together to schmooze, eat and drink, followed by learning sessions on varying topics led by our own Rabbis Schuck and Sitkin, and Rabbi Ethan Linden, Director of Camp Ramah in the Berkshires and a dynamic teacher. And once a month, we bring in a visiting scholar and all learn together. The Open Beit Midrash has been a successful and wonderful addition to our Jewish learning and has fostered a greater sense of community. While the OBM has been made possible by the Sylvia and Harry Halpern Lecture Fund and the Melvin and Lenore Sirner Fund for Jewish Inspiration, many of the sessions were sponsored by members in memory of a loved one.

It’s a beautiful tribute to someone special and a mitzvah to study Torah as a way to honor those we’ve lost. Sponsoring an OBM is also a wonderful way to mark a celebration or special occasion (visit www.bethelnr.org/openbeit). We still have a few weeks left of this year’s OBM and we are excited to bring it back in the Fall.

Our Keruv Committee, together with Sisterhood and Men’s Club, hosted 3 sessions with Rabbi Schuck entitled “What Keeps Your Rabbi Up at Night?” covering a range of topics including Israel and Diaspora Relations, Intermarriage and Jewish Identity, and Pluralism and Community. These sessions were extremely engaging and an opportunity for all those who attended to learn about each topic and Rabbi Schuck’s informative and thought provoking insights and perspectives. This series was another example of how our Keruv Committee works to foster our culture of inclusivity by [continued, page 14] bringing us together to discuss difficult 5

Our community is diverse; people have varying degrees of knowledge about Jewish text, tradition, worship, and access to Hebrew vocabulary. Since Jewish prayer assumes a certain amount of background exposure and knowledge, this service is intended to create an access point into prayer for those who may feel lost and/or alienated from our typical prayer services. The Learners’ Service is an introductory exploration of the prayer service. Each prayer will be studied in depth and read in English to gain a basic understanding of its meaning and intent. We will discuss the basic physical mechanics of each prayer when necessary. It is our hope that over time, everyone in our community will be able to enter the sanctuary with confidence and feel at home.

KERUV* KORNER PART OF THE JOURNEY

*“Keruv” = to bring close, to draw near

Keruv has always about been making and keeping Beth El inclusive. It’s been gratifying to see our congregation embrace our work and goals. In fact, as we have participated in Journey programs, themes of inclusion keep arising as part of the community’s shared vision for our future. On the other hand, there are also valid concerns about what kind of changes we can anticipate. After all, it is as important to include those here at Beth El seeking familiarity and tradition, as it is those who seek innovation or for whom tradition is unfamiliar and uncomfortable. One of the hallmarks of Conservative Judaism, much like Rabbinic Judaism, is its willingness to recognize and validate varying and even opposing points of view within its code of law. It is sometimes referred to as Halakhic (in accordance with Jewish law) pluralism.

Rabbi Shuck expounded on this concept of pluralism in the Hot Topic discussion last month. He defined pluralism as holding conflicting precepts as equally valid and normative for a group.

For example, within Conservative Judaism it is equally legitimate to read the entire weekly Torah portion each Shabbat or to read a designated one third of the portion, reading the entire Torah scroll either in one year or in three, respectively. Some may vehemently prefer one approach versus the other, arguing the merits of their stance, but no Conservative Jew can claim one or the other view is more legally valid.

Halakhic pluralism, Rabbi Schuck cautioned, does not mean there are no boundaries. For example, Conservative Jewish law requires that we only eat kosher food. As a Conservative congregation, Beth El must adhere to the laws of Kashrut. In order to best address the needs of our community, we will likely need to embrace multiple approaches and practices, but all will be within the confines of Conservative Jewish law.

The most common injunction in the Torah is to remember that we were slaves in Egypt. This halakha is central to all Judaism.

Arguably, knowing what it’s like to be a “stranger” is what defines us as a people. The intended implication is that knowing what it is like, and what the potentially dire consequences are of being an outsider, should compel us to be inclusive. As Beth El proceeds on its Journey, we can count on our adhering to this essential dictum.

Together we are creating a space where those who identify as gay or straight, gendered, trans-, or non-binary, from Orthodox religious backgrounds or from backgrounds other than Jewish, neuro-typical or with developmental challenges, inspired most by music, by contemplation or by text, rooted in ritual or in social justice, can all come together as one community to learn from one another and celebrate our Judaism.

Welcoming anyone interested in any kind of inclusion* to come to our Keruv meeting on Sunday, June 17 at 10:00 am We will be reviewing our accomplishments of past year, Jewish Pride weekend, and plans for the year to come.

Beth El Synagogue Center is starting a new group for adults in their 20s to 60s with developmental and/or learning differences and those who are learning to get out in the world. We hope to create a place for individuals of all backgrounds to socialize, learn, grow, and deepen their connections with one another.

Sisterhood Scene This very busy year of Sisterhood is drawing to a close. I don’t know where it has gone, but I know that we are heading into summer. People will go on vacations. Children will go to camp. Here at Sisterhood we are preparing to move onto the 2018-2019 season. Please join us at the Installation of Officers and Board on June 12th. Our nominating committee, chaired by Barbara Horowitz, has put together a wonderful group of women who will carry on the work of Beth El Synagogue Sisterhood. We will continue to support our synagogue, Women’s League for Conservative Judaism, and other organizations in our community. NURSERY SCHOOL FINAL THOUGHTS As the school year draws to a close, we begin to reflect on the past ten months that we have spent together. This has been a year of growth, creativity, exploration, and discovery.

We have built many friendships and developed a wonderful sense of community. Once again it is difficult to say our goodbyes.

In the world at large, this has been a difficult year for the Jewish

people, with many struggles that continue to challenge us. As much as we try to shield our children, we constantly face the formidable task of protecting them from the evils of the world. The following piece, written by Peter Stewart, speaks to this challenge. As we approach the end of our school year, we wish the entire Beth El community a peaceful and restful summer.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE, conttinued from page 5 topics and share our varying opinions in an open and civil dialogue. Whether it’s issues related to interfaith marriage, gender, sexual orientation, handicaps or special needs, our Keruv Committee seeks to open our hearts and minds to all members of our community, particularly those who have traditionally been marginalized, and truly make us a Kehillah Kedoshah, a sacred community.

Their work continues on Saturday, June 23rd, with Pride Shabbat, as we join shuls across the country to honor the movement for LGBTQ equality and inclusion in the Jewish community and society at large.

Our shul has continued to buzz with many other events. Our second big fund-raiser (after the Kol Nidre Appeal) was our Gala on March 18th, honoring Donald Fleishaker, Ne’emanim Award recipients Lori and Steve Schwartz, and Robyn and Dani Yairi, our first recipients of the newly introduced Lapid Award, a new award to honor our young members who have already shown a deep level of commitment to Beth El and continue to carry the torch – the Lapid – to brighten our future. It was a wonderful night of celebration made even sweeter by the financial success we achieved. The Gala exceeded our budget by $44,000 and brought in a total net profit of $194,000. Kol Hakavod to our co-chairs, Geralynn Reifer and Aaron Fleishaker, and their committee, as well as all our honorees for a fun and successful evening.

Our Youth Community continues to thrive, with our elementary school experiencing growth. Our Hebrew High School program was transformed this year into a teen engagement program developed by our amazing Director of Teen Engagement, Rebekkah Gold, with a new model of class offerings, open to all teens at Beth El whether they attend public school or day school. Bekkah looks forward to making this program even better next year. Our youth groups, from our youngest Ruach group to our oldest USY group, bring together our children for meaningful social and educational programs that foster strong relationships between the kids and enhance their connection to Judaism, Israel and community. We are proud that Beth El has 2 representatives on the Divisional Board of USY, as well as one representative on Regional Board. Our youth community had a unique experience this past February when a group of about a dozen teens went

on a social service trip to the Dominican Republic with Rabbi Schuck and Rebekkah Gold. For a week over February school break, these teens went to Derrembadurro, a remote village 5 hours outside of Santo Domingo, with no running water, working to help the community there. Playing with the local children, building a house and learning first-hand about the reality and ubiquity of poverty in our world, under the leadership of Rabbi Schuck and Bekkah these teens had a life changing experience that raised their consciousness and enriched their souls. We are truly blessed to have Rabbi Schuck and Bekkah, who through their caring, thoughtful, enthusiastic and selfless guidance, gave these teens an experience that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

Our efforts to help those in need also took root right here in Westchester. Beth El was proud to be part of the ICNAW, the Interfaith Council for New Americans Westchester, an organization made up of various houses of worship in New Rochelle who came together to help resettle a refugee family in Westchester. Working closely with HIAS, the group resettled a family from Afghanistan in White Plains. Under the leadership of Beth El member Jeff Swarz, and with the assistance of many of our own members and those of other churches and synagogues, the ICNAW found an apartment for the family and furnished it, saw to it that the family had medical and dental treatment as needed, enrolled the children in school, enrolled the family for Medicaid and SNAP, got them green cards and social security cards and even helped the father get a full time job and drivers’ license.

To have accomplished all of this within less than 6 months of the family’s arrival in the United States is remarkable and a testament to the incredible outpouring of support and hard work of the many people who stepped up to help this family.

I am also extremely proud of Beth El’s continuing support of and engagement with Israel. Beth El members, adults and teens, again attended the annual AIPAC Conference in Washington, D.C. Ofek, one of the Shinshinim (Israeli teen emissaries) who has spent the last year in our community working with Beth El and other synagogues and day schools in Westchester, joined our teens at AIPAC. By developing a relationship with Ofek over the last year, he has made Israel more personally relatable and helped our youth connect more deeply with Israel and fostered Ahavat Yisrael, love of Israel, 14

in our youth community.

F o r Yo m H a ’ a t z m a u t , I s r a e l Independence Day, Beth El participated in Israel@70, the Westchester wide celebration of Israel’s 70th anniversary organized by the Westchester Jewish Council. Beth El was a key sponsor of this multifaceted event, which was attended by over 3,000 people.

A special shout out to Julie Rockowitz and Ronnie Becher and their staff who ran special activities while publicizing Beth El Day Camp and Nursery School, and Erica Leventhal who negotiated our prime positioning at the event. Our Israel Affairs Committee continued to run programs reinforcing our connection to Israel. Events ranged from an evening sponsored by Israel Bonds with Dana Weiss, anchor and senior correspondent of Israel’s Channel 2 news, to another successful Israeli wine tasting and sale in time for Pesach. As Israel continues to be a source of tension among American Jews and for so many in the world, I’m proud that we celebrate the wonders of our Jewish homeland as we seek to foster open dialogue about the issues and challenges Israel faces.

We have numerous other committees and affiliates that work hard to create the multiplicity of programs that keep our members engaged throughout the year. Our Sisterhood and Men’s Club have continued their active schedules and there are so many more committees that contribute to the life of our community, more than I am able to include in this report. But please know that your work is valued and deeply appreciated by the members whose lives you enrich with the meaningful, social, educational and fun experiences you bring to life at Beth El. A major development that I’m excited to share with you relates to our sanctuary.

I want to be clear upfront and explain that nothing has been finalized and we have a lot more diligence to do, which will include seeking congregational input and ultimately require Board approval. A Beth El family wants to honor their parents and they are looking to do something that will make a meaningful impact on the future of Beth El, supports Rabbi Schuck’s and our lay leadership’s vision, and will be a lasting legacy to their parents. NEW OVERNIGHT SPORTS CAMP FOR 3rd THROUGH 10th GRADES Ramah Sports Academy (RSA) is an exciting, new Jewish overnight camp for students currently in 3rd through 10th grade.

RSA will launch its inaugural summer in June 2018 on the beautiful campus of Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut, approximately 1.5 hours from New York City. RSA offers campers top level collegiate athletic fields and facilities that include gymnasiums, an indoor pool, fitness and conditioning facilities, and more. RSA will offer three two-week sessions over the course of the summer. These intensive athletic experiences will take place within an inspiring Jewish environment that has been the hallmark of Ramah camps.

Campers choose a “major” from among RSA’s signature sports—soccer, basketball, baseball, swimming, and tennis. Based on demand, additional signature sports may be

offered. Campers participate in their major sport for two time blocks each day, totaling approximately five hours. All campers also have the opportunity to choose from a wide variety of electives for two hours each day.

They may choose to use this time to play one or more of the signature sports or they may choose from a wider range of other electives, including fitness training, Ultimate Frisbee, flag football, spinning, Zumba, yoga, meditation, and more. Campers and counselors live in a beautiful college dorm in a private corner of the Fairfield University campus. Ramah has exclusive use of the facility, featuring its own kosher kitchen, meeting rooms, and lounges. Each dorm room has its own private bathroom and showers and houses up to four people. Campers of similar ages are roomed together adjacent to staff rooms to ensure appropriate supervision

and accessibility. The staff consists of senior management, certified athletic coaches, and college-age counselors, who also serve as assistant coaches. Counselors provide leadership and supervision throughout the day, serving as Jewish role models as well as assistant sport instructors.

Throughout the summer, the camp will focus on four guiding principles, the 4 Cs. Through coaching, confidence, community, and connection, RSA will strive to meet the goals of campers of all athletic ability levels.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE, cont. fr pg. 14 update the congregation and seek your input, community is blessed by your dedication and Their grown children—Stephen, Sandy, and Barbara—all marked their Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrations here. They’ve spoken with Rabbi Schuck and have come to admire his vision about meaningful, spiritual and song filled prayer in an intimate environment. We received a lot of input about our building and physical space that grew organically out of our Journey discussions. To help us achieve this shared vision, they have proposed to make a $500,000 matching donation, which I believe would be the largest donation in Beth El’s history, towards the renovation of our sanctuary to make it a more personal and intimate space that can foster this kind of prayer experience. While some preliminary plans and budgets have been developed, we will be seeking input from the congregation as we move forward. But it is worth noting that the family, in particular Leonora Loewentheil, wants to make sure that we honor the past and are mindful of what to keep intact and that we don’t just make changes for change sake.

For example, the ceramic wall panels on each side of the sanctuary, the Aron Kodesh and Ner Tamid, the wall with Jerusalem stone, are all iconic and unique components that will be preserved. But, nothing is finalized and we need to do further diligence in terms of both developing the design and budget, exploring ways to arrange for the appropriate funds to match the generous donation by the Loewentheils, and ensure that we coordinate with the Journey process. As we proceed to explore this incredible opportunity we will

and ultimately bring it before the Board for approval. We have been moved by the children’s love of their parents and desire to invest in Beth El’s future.

In my second year, I will continue to focus on a culture of appreciation. I want to express our deep appreciation for our devoted clergy and staff. I want to thank Rabbi Sitkin and Cantor Aqua, our director of Teen Engagement Bekkah Gold, Nursery School Director Ronnie Becher, assistant to the Nursery School Director Shery Rosenstein, Day Camp Director and coordinator of Senior Programming Julie Rockowitz, Director of Programming Abby Wise, Controller Olivier Vogel, Director of Special Projects and assistant to Rabbi Sitkin Linda Newman, Alise Liquorie, and Debra Lomurno. We recently welcomed Pablo Najera as our new Director of Maintenance and we thank him and his team—Leon, Delroy, Bobby, and Roberto, and greeters Val and Richie. We said goodbye to two valued members of the Beth El family—Jen Vegh, Director of Youth & Family Engagement, and Milton Sinclair, our head of Maintenance. I want to thank Jen and Milton for their years of service and devotion to Beth El. They will be sorely missed. We wish them success and health. This entire team is led by our amazing spiritual leader, Rabbi David Schuck, and our Executive Director Erica Leventhal. I know I speak for the leadership of the shul when I express our gratitude to all of you for your wonderful partnership in our work together. Our entire 18

hard work to make Beth El the special place it is for all of us and for everyone who comes through our doors.

I am also grateful for the leadership of this shul, who work tirelessly to ensure a bright and secure future for our community.

I rely on the officers for their support and counsel as we handle the many issues that arise and try to think strategically as we plan for the future. Last, but not least, I thank my family— Marjorie and my children, Talia, Michael and Jonah for their ongoing support and understanding. DONATION POLICY CHANGE Please note that we have recently re-evaluated the way we handle notification of general donations made to Beth El. *Effective April 1st, we will only mail out acknowledgement letters for donations of $36 or greater made to our various funds. ALL donations of any value will continue to be posted in the monthly Bulletin. This is in line with common practice of other synagogues of similar size, and also yields administrative savings for Beth El. *Note: this change in policy does not affect donations made to Sisterhood or the Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund.
