On Sunday, September 23rd, you can have Beth El friends build a sukkah for you, in your yard! And when the holiday ends, they will come and take it down too! That’s right, you don’t need to store it, pay big bucks, or deal with the hassle of putting it up or taking it down!

FAQs What Is a Sukkah?

A sukkah is a booth in which we are commanded to dwell during the festival of Sukkot.

According to rabbinic tradition, the sukkot represent the huts in which the Israelites dwelt during their forty years of wandering in the desert after escaping from slavery in Egypt, and the structures built by farmers in their fields when they reaped their harvest.

The sukkah is a temporary structure, whose roof is made out of thatch or branches. It provides some shade and protection from the sun, but also allows the stars to be seen at night. Traditionally, the Sukkah is decorated, and we are encouraged to spend as much time in it as possible. Weather permitting, meals are eaten in the sukkah, and the hardier among us may also elect to sleep in the sukkah.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE As I write this, summer is winding down and we’re in full force gearing up for the holidays. The summer has been busy at Beth El. Our camp as always has created incredible experiences and memories for the over 250 campers and their families. The smiling faces filling our building and grounds and the constant singing and laughter heard all day long reflect that once again our very own Julie Rockowitz and her wonderful staff have hit it out of the park! And the fun continued as our “SummerFEST” mini-camp for seniors took place, with swimming, yoga, speakers, and a trip. While maybe not as program-filled as the rest of the year, Beth El had lots going on­—our annual Summer Israeli Film Series, Shabbat Shaboom for families with young children, the Tzofim (Israeli Scouts) Friendship Caravan concert, and Israeli Wine Tasting were just a few of our summer events. Behind the scenes, our staff and volunteers have continued to work hard to keep Beth El buzzing now and into the future.

Our Journey team has kept up their work, as several Deep Dive groups have continued to review and brainstorm ideas about our facilities and the different ways we can better utilize our existing space, potential enhancements, and opportunities to monetize our space, our dues structure and financial models, and other aspects of our synagogue. Our sanctuary renovation project, resulting from the generous matching donation to Beth El by the Loewentheil family in honor of their parents, Howard and Leonora, went through important developments. After initial approval by our Board of Trustees at its April meeting, it was again approved at the June meeting after extensive deliberation about this project, as well as other project ideas that are coming out of Journey, the infrastructure and maintenance projects that will be necessary for our aging facility and the necessary funding for all of these. We opened up a dedicated e-mail address, sanctuary@bethelnr.org, to solicit feedback from members about the sanctuary renovation and held a congregational open meeting

attended by approximately 180 members in person and almost 70 members by live stream. Attendees had the opportunity to review the plans, learn more through a formal presentation of all the plans by our architects, and to share their questions and concerns during an extensive Q&A. Mark Seidenfeld The architects and group working on the sanctuary welcomed the feedback and will be taking it all in to consideration as we proceed to refine our plans. Your voice is important and sanctuary@bethelnr.org remains open, so please feel free to submit your questions and comments.

And now we turn to that special time of year when we all come together to share one of the most meaningful and spiritual moments of the Jewish calendar—Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur—and to celebrate the joy of Sukkot and Simchat Torah. We just returned from a week away, settling our son Michael in to his apartment in Chicago and his new chapter as he returns to college. He’s embarking on his next phase with a new school, new apartment, new roommates, new neighborhood and city to explore. It’s all exciting and daunting at the same time, but he’s approaching all these changes with enthusiasm and optimism for what this next chapter will bring. As we begin the New Year at Beth El, all the work ahead is exciting and daunting, and I’m enthusiastic and optimistic about the opportunities that lie ahead for us. I look forward to it being a year filled with new experiences at Beth El and I hope it’s a year that will enhance our sense of appreciation for all our community offers and what we offer each other.

Oh God: Sex and the Jews – Divine Gift or Forbidden Fruit?

Wednesdays, with Rabbi Molly Karp Jewish views of sex and sexuality have unfolded over millennia in wildly diverse ways. Is sex a mitzvah? A temptation to be overcome? A reflection of Divine activity between God and the Shekhina? Only for procreation or something to be enjoyed? As in many other areas of Jewish thought, there is no one monolithic Jewish view of sex and sexuality. This course will explore representative literary selections, of Jewish thought and expression from the Talmud through Kabbalah and more, on this topic as they unfold throughout our history and in varying communities. Materials will be supplied by the instructor along with suggestions for additional voluntary reading. No previous knowledge is needed. Though this course began in August, new participants are welcomed for the six remaining sessions.

We will meet at Beth El Synagogue Center on Wednesday mornings, September 5, 12, and 26, and October 3, 10 and 17, from 9:45 am - 12:00 noon.

Dr. Beth Breakstone in the Kanner-Kurzon Museum, September 8th - October 14th Art Inspired by Nature: A Physician’s Perspective Dr. Beth Breakstone is a long-time member of Beth El Synagogue Center, together with her husband, Dr. Ted Keltz. She was able to retire early from her career in pathology and could then pursue her dream of becoming an outstanding botanical and avian artist. Immediately after retiring she enrolled in her first class at the New York Botanical Garden. When asked why a physician would become such an artist, she replied that botanical and natural science art and illustration allowed her to combine her artistic interest with her scientific background. Her powers of observation honed after years of looking at tissue under a microscope were similar to the observation required to understand a subject and render it “biologically correct.”

Her early work was faithful to natural science art and illustration and based on specimens that she collected, caught, fixed and pinned to be able to draw the fine details from life. An avid birder since childhood, her bird portraits are based on photos taken by her husband while on bird walks together. The botanical, butterfly and bird paintings were initially painted with pan pastels enabling large areas of bright color to be laid down quickly. Intricate details were added with hard pastels and colored pencils.

After developing a body of botanical and natural science work, she found the style of botanical art to be too confining.

In an attempt to loosen up, she started to paint with acrylics, an opaque medium where images can be painted over, freeing her up for experimentation. Her latest paintings are inspired by her photographs, but may look very little like the source photo. Even her iPad has become a canvas to quickly work out compositions, colors and other details before putting brush to paper. Her choices of media now include colored pencil, watercolor, gouache, acrylic, pastels, and India ink. More recently, she has been expanding her subject matter, especially landscapes inspired by her travels and the beauty of nature.

She had always believed that if she had not become a physician

she would have been an artist, and is quite fortunate to be able to have done both. She notes that both medicine and art require constant learning and Beth continues to take classes at Greenwich Art Society with Lauretta Jone, an excellent teacher who can support artists in whatever direction their art journey takes. At this point, she is only limited by the fact that her studio is also her dining room, but plans are in the works for that to change. Some day she would like to paint very large, brightly colored canvases inspired by nature.

D r. B r e a k s t o n e has exhibited in juried and invitational shows associated with the New York Botanical Garden, Loft Artists Association, Greenwich Art Society, a n d t h e N e w Yo r k Public Library, but this is her first solo exhibit.

Everyone is invited to the artist’s reception at Beth El Synagogue C e n t e r o n S u n d a y, September 16th, 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm. You will be able to talk to the artist about her work. A percentage of all sales will be donated to Beth El when you write your check to the synagogue. The exhibit can also be visited daily when the synagogue is open. If the room is locked you can get the key from the office or from the greeter at the front door.

How can we pay better attention to living our lives with intention? Make time for yourself at our Contemplative Service, which is designed to slow the pace of our lives in order to listen to what emerges from the silence. We will set aside time for mindfulness meditation, contemplative study, singing, and prayer, and focus our attention on opening our hearts and minds.

Everyone is welcome; dress as you would like, and bring an open mind! Please arrive a few minutes early to minimize interruptions.

Our community is diverse; people have varying degrees of knowledge about Jewish text, tradition, worship, and access to Hebrew vocabulary. Since Jewish prayer assumes a certain amount of background exposure and knowledge, this service is intended to create an access point into prayer for those who may feel lost and/or alienated from our typical prayer services. This service is an introductory exploration of the prayer service. Each prayer will be studied in depth and read in English to gain a basic understanding of its meaning and intent. We will discuss the basic physical mechanics of each prayer when necessary. It is our hope that over time, everyone in our community will be able to enter the sanctuary with confidence and feel at home.

The Days of Awe are not just a time of self-reflection and spirituality; they are also very much a time of connecting with community . . . and re-connecting with people from whom we may have grown distant. The Rabbis taught us that before we can seek atonement from the divine, me must make amends and seek forgiveness from one another. It is a wonderful time of reunion, reconciliation and togetherness. A time that we should go out of our way to be inclusive.

The members of the Keruv Inclusion Committee recognize that many Beth El congregants strive to be welcoming and inclusive. At the same time, this is the ideal time to learn how we can improve.

Sisterhood Scene Membership Dinner on Tuesday, October 23rd. It will be a time to celebrate all our members of Sisterhood.

Our membership materials should have arrived at your home in August. It contained a newsletter and a dues envelope for you to remit to Lori Schwartz, a Membership Vice President. On that envelope you will also have an opportunity to include an additional $5 to purchase your coupon for the Lord & Taylor “Shop Right/Do Good” event scheduled for Friday, November 16th.

I want to thank the women of the Summer Short Story Group who are members of Sisterhood. These women lost a friend and member last winter. Betty Grad-Gross had been a participant for many years and she was a strong advocate for eliminating hunger in our community. With that in mind the women of the Summer Short Story Group have made a generous donation to Sisterhood in memory of Betty Grad-Gross. This money will be used to provide Sisterhood’s October lunch to Project Hope in Betty’s name. What a wonderful way for our sisters to honor the memory of our long-time member and friend.

As we approach the holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, on behalf of our Sisterhood Boards, I wish all of you a happy, healthy, and peaceful new year. May you, your family and all those dear to you be inscribed in the Book of Life, Risë Stern , Sisterhood President

As I sat down to write this article, I remembered hearing that right after Tisha B’Av my grandmother would announce, “I must begin to get ready. It is only seven weeks to Rosh Hashanah.” As I begin to think about the holidays I also begin to think about the 2018 - 2019 season of Sisterhood.

Our summer vacation season is rapidly drawing to a close. Now is the time of year when Sisterhood starts a new season filled with activities for ALL the many different women at Beth El. We hope that each of you will sign up and participate so that together we can create a true Sisterhood dedicated to working for Beth El, New Rochelle and our greater Jewish community. Join us as we partner with The Green Committee at Beth El to try to make our synagogue a more ecologically friendly place. Participate as we support Torah Fund, a program that is over 70 years old, that specifically supports the future educators, rabbis and cantors of the Conservative/Masorti Movement.

We look forward to seeing you at our ongoing activities. After the holidays, our Walking Club, Canasta, and Mah Jongg will resume.

Our two book groups, Bagels & Books and Wine & Cheese Evening Book Club, will continue to meet and have lively and thought provoking discussions. We plan to bring you programs scheduled during the day and in the evening to encourage the participation of all our members. Our first evening event will be our Paid-Up

NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS Why wait till September to see old friends and meet new ones? On a beautiful Sunday morning in July, our Nursery School families were invited to a Playground Play Date. Our children didn’t need anything more than sand, water, pails, shovels and bubbles to make for a fun-filled day. The excitement is already in the air for the upcoming 2018-2019 school year! We are kicking off our programming with a very special event in September—a Friday afternoon classroom peek, followed by time in our Outdoor Nature Play Space. Beth El Nursery School treasures our state-of-the-art outdoor classroom and

all of our families are invited to spend time together in our beautiful outdoor nature play space, located down on the field behind the large playground. Children will have an opportunity to explore our magnet wall and music wall, climb on the tire tower and balance beam, build with outdoor construction blocks, utilize the many slides and play in our mud kitchen. Afterwards, we will gather all together, in the center of our outdoor space, for some communal Shabbat singing.

And finally, everyone is invited back into the building for a wonderful Shabbat meal, as we bring in our first Shabbat together as our 18-19 Beth El Nursery School (BENS) community.

What’s going on in the Department of Youth & Family Engagement?

Our department aims to provide social experiences for children in Kindergarten through 12th grade in a Jewish environment. We are ready for a fun-filled year of programs planned by our amazing advisors and teen leaders. We look forward to working together to build engaging, exciting, meaningful opportunities in Jewish life. We welcome your ideas for new and exciting programming as well as feedback on existing programs. Please feel free to contact us at any time.

• We have great programming set up for our Ruach (K-2nd grade), Chaverim (3rd-5th grade), Kadima (6th-8th grade), USY (9th-12th grade), and our families. Check your e-mail for our fun events coming up.

• Basketball for 5th-12th Grade: Teams are on a first-come, first-served basis for our Jewish basketball league, so watch your e-mail for registration information. Coaches are needed! Please be in touch if you are interested.

• Moving Traditions: We currently have a Rosh Hodesh group for 11th grade girls and a Shevet group for 8th grade boys. These groups help our teens get to know each other, be creative, build self-esteem, and explore Jewish concepts. E-mail us for more information or to start a new group!

• Cub Scouts: Designed for boys in 1st-4th grade, Beth El is happy to host a Jewish Cub Scout troop that meets regularly, on-site as well as off-site, for exciting activities. For more information, contact the Department of Youth and Family Engagement.

Religious School News We are excited to begin another fantastic year of community-building and meaningful learning for our Gan (Kindergarten) through 8th grade learners. We look forward to continuing to grow our opportunities for full family engagement by offering more parent programming, like our monthly parent learning sessions, and more opportunities for parents to be involved in their children’s religious school experience. We look forward to seeing you all on Opening Day, Sunday, September 23rd, 9:00 am - 11:00 am, to kick off a wonderful year. Our learners will get to know their educators and each other in new ways and our parents will come together and look to the future, forming goals for the coming year.

A Note from the Director…

I wonder if new beginnings are perhaps one of the greatest gifts we are given.

It is truly a blessing to be able to expand my capacity in the Beth El community and see the Department of Youth and Family Engagement grow throughout immense change and transition. As I continue to build relationships with youth, teens, and families alike, I am struck by the joy, support, and strength this community puts forth and I am anticipating all of the moments to come. I am really looking forward to developing our Department of Youth and Family Engagement in my shifted role as both Director of Teen Engagement and Interim Director of Elementary Engagement. I’m thrilled to work with Stephanie Lederman, our Youth & Family Coordinator, as she supports our department through both administrative tasks and detail-oriented programming. And, of course, I am most excited to continue to get to know each and every one of you, as we move along our Jewish journeys and grow together, here at Beth El. In the Department of Youth & Family Engagement, Stephanie and I are working together to add to and enhance our offered family programming. We are strategically planning new opportunities for our youth and families to connect with one another, starting with our High Holiday Youth Services and programming and continuing at our Apple Picking Kickoff Event on October 7th. We are coordinating with our clergy to create meaningful Shabbat experiences for youth and families and will carry on with monthly social programming for our youth groups—Ruach (Kindergarten to 2nd grade), Chaverim (3rd-5th grade), Kadima (6th-8th grade), and USY (9th-12th grade).

In the Religious School, we continue to re-imagine our learning spaces so that they become places that encourage relationship building between learners and educators. Our Learner Support Team will be in touch with parents over the course of the year to encourage stronger lines of communication and increasing our abilities to meet each of our learners’ needs. We are eager to launch an updated middle school program for our sixth and seventh graders and bring in a new eighth grade education program for our learners as well, involving deep conversation, service learning, trips, and more. Plus, we are thrilled to have one of Westchester’s Shinshinim (Israeli emissaries who are on their gap year before they join the IDF) with us for four hours a week, engaging with our youth regularly. Additionally, our Parent Organization is already hard at work planning opportunities for Religious School parents to get to know one another and feel connected to the larger Beth El community of youth and families. We rely on, and are grateful for,contributions to the Religious School PTA and the Dorothy Fleishaker Religious School Enrichment Fund to help bring exciting programs such as these to our community. Our learners gain so much from these experiences and ewe are so appreciative that we can offer them.

In our teen community, we are in the second of a three-year plan to enhance our teen engagement both in our synagogue and beyond. We are excited to add in monthly trips, service learning, leadership opportunities, Shabbat experiences, Israel education with our shinshinit, social programming, and more into our teen experience. And much of this will be led by our teens themselves with the guidance of our teen educator and USY advisor Andrew Van Bochove and me.

Our USY Chapter is thriving as we continue to be actively involved in METNY and Emek USY. Stay tuned for details about our new model, dues structure, and how to register for this year’s program.

As we look towards the New Year of 5779 in the Department of Youth & Family Engagement, you can see that the excitement is really buzzing. With new vision, new programs, and renewed energy, we eagerly anticipate the start of this year.
