THE USYERS ARE COMING TO BETH EL! Dear Beth El Members, We are excited to host this year’s METNY USY Regional Fall Kinnus at Beth El Synagogue Center, from Friday, November 13th to Sunday, November 15th. This opportunity comes along only once every four years. Over 250 teens and staff from all over the New York area will gather at Beth El from Friday afternoon through Sunday morning.

This is a wonderful opportunity for our community to be invigorated by the joy and ruach that our USYers will bring over Shabbat and throughout the weekend.

We need your help to make sure this weekend is a success! Watch your e-mail for sign-up information.

Home Hospitality: All staff and teens attending the weekend stay in the homes of our members Friday and Saturday nights. You need not have a teen at home to house USYers. Host families only feed their guests breakfast on Saturday morning; all other meals are provided by USY at the shul.

Volunteer: In addition to host homes, we are seeking volunteers for driving to host homes, registration and luggage, meals (cooking, serving, cleaning up), and supervising. Even if you only have an hour of time to lend, we appreciate your help!

Families with 9th-12th Graders: This is a very special opportunity for our teens to experience a USY weekend in their home congregation. We hope your teen will join us for this special Shabbat!

Join us for Shabbat! USY will be leading all parts of the Shabbat morning service on November 14th in the Main Sanctuary. We hope you will join us to be inspired by their ruach!

Shabbat S.P.A.C.E. Shabbat SPACE (Synagogue Play Activities Children’s Environment) is offered on Saturday mornings and selected holidays. Children (babies through age 12) are invited to join us in the Kasakove on Shabbat mornings, before and after Youth Services.

Children are supervised by childcare providers in a safe and fun environment, be with their friends, and play with Shabbat-friendly games and toys.

Shabbat SPACE opens at 9:30 am. At 10:25 am, supervisors bring all Kindergarten through 6th graders to their respective youth services, which begin at 10:45 am. Children in K-6th grade, at 10:45 am, are expected to be in their assigned youth service or with their parents. They will not be permitted to stay in the Kasakove, nor wander the hallways. Parents of pre-K children are encouraged to join Torah for Tots, beginning at 10:45 am. For parents of pre-K children who prefer to remain with their child(ren), a bin of toys is available outside the sanctuary.

At 11:45 am, our youth join the Main service to lead the congregation in closing prayers. Shabbat SPACE closes at 1:00 pm. Children must be picked up from the Kasakove by a parent or guardian. No food is allowed; allergy-aware snacks and water will be available. Please alert the supervisor of any allergies.

RABBI’S MESSAGE Dear Friends, As we take down our sukkot and the yamim noraim (days of awe) come to an end, we tend to put our heads down and plow forward into the fall. The Rabbi days that we spent in David A. Schuck reflection and prayer quickly fade into the recesses of our minds.

Our china and silverware are tucked away, as they themselves (!) look forward to being passed around at the next holiday dinner.

And in this crisp weather, we whisper a silent prayer that autumn will extend itself, stealing time away from the snowy freeze of New York winters. At this moment, Avinu Malkeinu is probably a distant memory.

This is the nature of time. We experience moments that are precious and we want to hold on to them, but we let them go as we move into the future. Yet memory offers

us opportunities to revisit such moments, and in doing so, we can continue to be nourished by them. If we paid attention to these special days, we surely experienced a moment of deep connection. Perhaps it was the feeling that hovered throughout the sanctuary as the faces of our children were illuminated by the dancing flame of a havdalah candle at the end of Yom Kippur.

Maybe it was the moment in which you were surrounded by your family and friends and you felt how truly blessed you are to be alive and loved by so many people. These moments reside in your mind; the challenge is making the time necessary to allow our minds to carry us back to these moments.

The greatest function of the Hebrew month of Cheshvan (the long stretch of time between Simchat Torah and Hanukkah) is that there are no holidays, and this gives us time to reflect on the experience that we just had. Do we still hear that inner voice that emerged on Sukkot committing us to be more present with our children

or more patient with an aging parent? Are we sufficiently dedicated to that decision we made on Yom Kippur to add one more mitzvah to our lives? We need the time necessary to process the experiences that we had over these special few weeks. Even a month later, the words and poetry of our liturgy still roll around our minds, and they have something to tell us if we make the time to listen.

The Hebrew month of Cheshvan, which at first glance seems to be empty of calendric significance, can be a time in which the after effects of these awe-filled days touch our lives in very deep ways. We just need to set aside time to give them the space necessary to re-emerge. May we each have a Cheshvan filled with the reverberations of the sacred moments of these past few weeks.

As I write this, I have just gotten up from Shiva after the death of my father, Richard Gloth, z”l. His passing was unexpected, the Hazzan Jamie Gloth result of a fall, and has left me reeling and overwhelmed. As I try to reintegrate into my daily routine on the cusp of the High Holidays, I find myself in tremendous emotional pain, something I have never quite felt before.

When I lost my mother twelve years ago, I grieved alongside my father. Now that I am orphaned, I feel much more alone.

From the beginning of the month of Elul through Hoshana Rabbah, we add an additional prayer to our morning and evening services. I have recited this prayer, Psalm 27, countless times over the years, not giving it too much thought. This year, however, as I began reciting it during Shiva, I discovered new meaning, which jumped off the page at me and immediately gave me newfound comfort.

The Psalm is ascribed to David, who prays for God’s protection.

Our sages presumably included it during this Season of Repentance so as to seek God’s help as we account for our actions. About halfway through, however, I find the words especially poignant for me as I embark on this season for the first time without either of my parents.

“I will sing and chant to Adonai. Adonai, hear my voice when I call. Be gracious to me and answer me. It is You whom I seek, says my heart. It is Your presence that I seek, Adonai.

Do not hide from me. Do not reject Your servant. You have been my help; do not abandon me, God of my deliverance.

Though my father and my mother leave me, Adonai will care for me.”

As I sing to God this High Holiday season, I will be thinking about these words in a new light. They give me comfort, and I pray that God will continue to ease my pain.

The outpouring of love, support, and kindness from this congregation and community has been incredible, and this too has greatly helped to ease my pain. I cannot adequately thank everyone who has been there by my side during this difficult time. My family and I will be forever grateful to all of you. We truly feel blessed to be a part of such a loving and caring community.

Thank you, and may we all be sealed in the Book of Life.

Dear Friends: In my Kol Nidre Appeal speech, I spoke about Beth El’s stable and solid foundation that has been developed over the 110-yearhistory of our shul. As we all know, there is no day where our shul is closed. We are an active, thriving community that provides a wide range of religious, educational, social, and community activities for all ages, allowing us to engage our Jewish heritage and explore all aspects of Jewish life. Many find their connection to Beth El to be a wonderful and rewarding relationship, filled with many meaningful and enriching experiences. Beth El offers many programs and events. But beyond our many programs and gatherings, it’s the intimate moments and human connections along our Jewish journeys that are facilitated within the walls of our synagogue. They can be quiet moments of introspection during a service, listening to a sermon where the rabbi’s words touch our hearts in a deeply personal way, the intellectual and spiritual stimulation from learning together, or the quiet conversation we may share with clergy or a a fellow congregant that brings us comfort and compassion. Our shul is here for all of us at times of joy; to celebrate our s’machot; and at times of need, when we rely on the support of our treasured

community and loving guidance of our clergy. Stability is good, but so is change Samuel E. Berger and in any community or organization, there is always room for improvement.

Change is not new at Beth El. Our services, practices, governance, and constitution are much different from the days when the shul was founded and changed significantly from when my family joined Beth El twenty years ago. John F. Kennedy said, “Change is the law of life, and those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.” Led by Rabbi Schuck, together with the rest of our clergy team and professional staff, we will experiment, analyze, and see what works for our community. This will help formulate our vision as we strive to keep existing members happy, attract new members, and nourish them all with meaningful Jewish experiences by releasing the previously untapped potential and strength of Beth El. What I am asking is that we, as a kehilah kedoshah, a sacred community, strive to have the ability to be open, understanding, and receptive to some change.

Note to Beth El Members from Keruv about Keruv (“Keruv” = Inclusion) Many of us find warmth, friendship, and community here at Beth El Synagogue Center. For some, our synagogue is a second home. But not everyone feels this way.

That new face in the back of the sanctuary; the “I think they belong to Beth El, but am not sure” couple at the end of the row; the elderly gentleman tentatively entering Kiddush lunch—some of these folks may not be feeling the warmth. This makes it unlikely that they will return.

Among the world’s problems, solving this one is an easy call. YOU are the solution. There is no one else to greet that newcomer. Do it! You’ll make Beth El a warmer place. You’ll feel good about it. And if you are mistaken, if the stranger is, indeed, a Beth El member, utter a “whoops,” introduce yourself, and, voila, make a new synagogue acquaintance.

WHEELCHAIRS WELCOMED IN THE MAIN SANCTUARY! Beth El has removed four of the permanent seats in the sanctuary to create two dedicated aisle spots of ample size to accommodate wheelchairs in the last row of permanent seating. (The locations were chosen with safety in mind to assure ease of egress in the event of an emergency.) These spots are currently available to anyone in need and will be reserved for wheelchairs throughout the year, except during the Ten Days of Awe (the “High Holidays”) when the reconfiguring of the sanctuary and safety concerns necessitate a different area be reserved for those in wheelchairs.

Connect to Employment (C2E) A new program offered by WJCS This program is designed to help those in our Westchester Jewish community who are struggling with employment instability. The first Boot Camp will launch on October 13th.

This five-session intensive employment program (with a twice monthly followup group) will develop and sharpen your job search skills and increase your marketability. It is geared for those aged fifty and over.

Candidates will work individually with a career specialist to maximize their potential and opportunities. They will be trained in tools for networking and creating potential job leads.

MEMORIES TO GO: OUR STORIES ABOUT THE TWENTIETH CENTURY The Admiral Graf Spee My early childhood was spent in relative comfort in Berlin, Germany.

However, by the early 1930s, as the Nazis took control, my parents understood the need to leave Europe. It was very difficult in those days to obtain visas for the United States since there was a strict quota system in place that kept people waiting for years.

Most countries, in fact, closed their gates to foreigners. Fortunately, the small nation of Uruguay in South America was not one of them, and it gave our small family permission to enter in 1936.

We left Germany in the fall of that year and six weeks later arrived in Montevideo to find ourselves enjoying the spring weather of the Southern Hemisphere. We felt as if we had arrived at the end of the world, which was not far from the truth, being near the South Pole.

Montevideo was, and still is, a charming city on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. It has beautiful European architecture, shady plazas, and riverside promenades bordering pristine sandy beaches. Upon our arrival, we rented a small house in a nice area and I made many new friends. I learned Spanish quickly from playing with my neighbors.

As children, my friends and I heard our families discuss the war in Europe, but it really did not affect our day-to-day lives.

In the middle of the night, while I slept, my parents would often listen to news from Europe via a short wave radio. Europe and the events unfolding there, felt very far away.

One morning, however, I was awakened early and told that I would not be going to school that day. Instead, I was told to get dressed to go downtown to the harbor with my parents. En route, it seemed as if the whole city was headed in the same direction.

Our bus was very crowded and there were police everywhere. The excitement was due to the arrival of a German battleship called “The Admiral Graf Spee” in our port, on the Rio de la Plata.

The Admiral Graf Spee was considered to be one of the most famous German naval warships of World War II. It had been sent to the South Atlantic as a commerce raider, plotting a course to cross major shipping lanes at night to avoid detection. She sank nine Allied merchant ships before arriving in the port of Montevideo, but her captain, Captain Hans Langsdorff, adhered strictly to the rules of mercantile warfare and he transferred all crew members safely to neutral tankers.

British ships had followed the Admiral Graf Spee through the South Atlantic, inflicting severe damage to the German ship. It had been hit repeatedly and had been forced into Montevideo for repairs. Since Uruguay was a neutral country, the Admiral Graf Spee was permitted to stay for seventytwo hours. When it turned out that this was not adequate time for the repairs to be made, the British attacked and we watched from the roof of a house near the port.

The battle ended at sunset with the majestic Admiral Graf Spee blowing up like a volcano erupting outside the territorial waters of Uruguay. The ship burned like a livid torch for days. It was the most dramatic sight I have ever witnessed and, for the first time in my young life, ‘the war’, that the adults seemed to discuss so incessantly, felt personal.

Captain Langsdorff, a forty-five-year-old career naval officer from an aristocratic family, committed suicide three days after

by Ruth Kon the battle. His body was found in full gala uniform with the imperial flag of Germany rather than the Nazi flag—a significant statement as to where his allegiances had lain.

The battle of Rio de la Plata received a great deal of publicity at the time. This was primarily because it was fought during the first winter of the European war.

Moreover, the picture of a large enemy ship being pursued by two smaller British ships appealed to the imagination. This was before warfare involved much aircraft and radar, and it made quite an impression.

Dozens of newspaper reporters and radio commentators descended upon our littleknown part of the world.

When the English ships finally left Montevideo a few days following the battle, a band was playing “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” and all the locals joined in with great gusto. Two German families who lived on our street eventually got permission to bring sailors from the Admiral Graf Spee for a weekend visit. These young men were happy to find themselves safely tucked away in our lovely city, away from the tensions of Europe. They were well-treated by the Uruguayan government and we became personally acquainted with more than a few of them. Friendly and polite, they enjoyed many of the same activities as we did, including movies, music and tennis. They learned Spanish and some even married local girls. I don’t ever remember them ever speaking of politics. While most returned to Germany after the war, some stayed with their new families to enjoy the relaxed lifestyle of Uruguay. Life is strange in how circumstances can make mortal enemies into friends.

BeTzelem Elokim BELONGING AT BETH EL

The great sage Hillel taught, “If I am not for myself, who will be? If I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?” Hillel’s wisdom is particularly apt as Beth El strives to be ever more inclusive and connected. Everyone in our congregation should feel part of this caring community, but that doesn’t always happen. Many of us experience barriers that Beth El can only recognize and address if we each have the courage to speak openly and advocate for ourselves. At the same time, in order for anyone to talk about barriers, we all need to help one another feel safe and comfortable here.

Is there an appropriate forum where we, as a congregation, can honestly discuss impediments to belonging and participation? I’m glad you asked!

The Sisterhood, Men’s Club, Keruv (“Draw close”) Committee, and BeTzelem Elokim (“In God’s Image”) Inclusion Committee have joined forces to sponsor a unique event called “Belonging at Beth El – A Different Voice” on Thursday evening, October 22nd, at 6:45 pm. Our keynote speaker is a young man named Miles Forma, who has severe cerebral palsy which prevents him from walking or talking. Nevertheless, he was able to celebrate his bar mitzvah here at Beth El roughly fourteen years ago.

He and his family had drifted away from synagogue life, but a chance encounter between his father and Rabbi Sirner in the supermarket resulted in Mr. Forma starting Hebrew studies with Rabbi Dorsch this past summer and joining Beth El Synagogue Center. Using his computer-generated voice, Mr. Forma will talk about his life and what he is doing now; he will then field questions.

He needs to leave at 7:45 pm, but we’re hoping his presentation, a moving example of how rewarding inclusion can be, will kick-start a candid discussion among everyone present about what challenges they and/or their children or parents may face at Beth El. We will also share what we learned from the inclusion questionnaire circulated last June. By 8:30 pm we will adjourn for some light refreshments and informal conversation before heading home. This event is not only for those who feel challenged or excluded in some way, or only those who are already actively involved. It is for everyone at Beth El. IN OUR MUSEUM IRMA SHAPIRO IN THE KANNER-KURZON MUSEUM Irma Shapiro will present an exhibit of her paintings entitled, “A Passion for Color,” in the Beth El museum from Saturday, October 24th, through Sunday, November 29th. She defines herself as a colorist, using tone, tint, vividness, richness (or lack thereof) to depict shape and form— sometimes exaggerating reality or embellishing the subject matter. She mixes expressionism and post-impressionism on large canvasses with a lot of brushwork, pushing toward the boundaries of the imaginary.

She is aware of the brilliance of color and tries to achieve an effect of the subject rather than a literal interpretation. Her favorite medium is acrylic on canvas, paper, or board. She paints portraits, still-life, waterscapes, landscapes, and semi-abstracts.

Her landscapes are depicted without people to represent the emptiness she has felt since the death of her husband. Her studio is in her home in the Philadelphia area.

Irma took her first art class as a senior in college. After marriage, five children, and the death of her mother, she stopped painting for twenty years until her terminally-ill husband expressed how much her art had meant to him, and she promised him that she would paint with heart and soul. She took lessons at many of the Philadelphia area’s most prestigious art schools, including the

Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Samuel Fleisher Art Gallery, Moore College of Art, and Main Line Art Center.

Some of her mentors were Sol Carson, Jim Leuders, Martin Jackson, Sam Fried, Laura Goodman, and William S. Greenwood. She does consider herself largely self-taught, however. She said, “I can’t draw. I work frantically, and I don’t think things out. I paint my images back to front; so I’m up a creek if something needs redoing.”

In 2012 her house burned down completely, along with the bulk of her artwork and records, including past resumes.

This was followed by two major tragedies in the family. She used painting as therapy to survive these difficulties. Time and determination helped her to produce a whole

new body of work. In spite of the loss of her resumes and records, she has been able to recreate much of the data for her artistic history of the past fifteen years. She has been the featured artist in many solo exhibits. She has won many awards in various juried and invitational shows. She is sure that her husband would be proud of her achievements.

The increasing popularity of her work has been exciting. In her mind, “The fun of a sale is knowing that someone loves your work enough to want to live with it.” Most exhibits have been in Pennsylvania, but she has had others in Florida and in New York City. She is a member of many art clubs and centers.

Irma’s work is found in many corporate and private collections, and the pieces that she will display here will be for sale. If you purchase something, 25 percent of the sale price will be donated to Beth El. The Kanner-Kurzon Museum will be open Saturdays and Sundays, but you can visit on any day that the synagogue is open.

If the room is locked, you can get the key from the greeter at the front door or in the Beth El office.

Everyone is invited to the artist’s reception on Sunday, October 25th, 2:00 pm -4:30 pm. You can meet the artist and discuss her work with her.

Andrea Strongwater in the Museum through Sunday, October 18th Professional artist Andrea S t r o n g w a t e r ’s exhibit entitled “Lost Synagogues of Europe” will be in the Museum for the next two weeks. The project of painting these images began Nuremburg when she found a book on her shelf that she had not noticed in many years: Images et Traditions Juives, Gerard Sylvain’s collection of postcards detailing Jewish life around the world from 1897 to 1917. From those grainy black and white reproductions and other images she

collected, she created full color paintings of synagogues destroyed by the Nazis and related parties. Once the synagogues were burned or blown apart the Jewish community was often levied a fee or forced to remove the debris themselves, sometimes by hand.

The synagogues left no physical record other than photos and occasional memorial plaques. She found images and historical information in various archives, libraries, private collections and web sites.

For Andrea, this project illuminates Jewish life before the war and what was done by the Third Reich to end that life. Each synagogue depicted has its own story. The synagogues served as centers of Jewish life for prayer, the latest gossip, lectures, music, 10

art, weddings and other Jewish life events.

None of the synagogues depicted continue to exist. She plans to expand the project to cover synagogues from North Africa, Arab countries, and Israel.

As a professional Andrea creates art for the gift market—wrapping paper, puzzles, dinnerware, textiles, ketubahs, cards, anything with art on it. The Judaica work has led to many connections, including help with the synagogue project from the Jewish Theological Seminary and the Holocaust Museum, in Washington, D.C. The exhibit can be visited whenever Beth El is open. If the room is locked you can get the key from the office or the greeter at the front door.

We are once again supporting the annual “Light the Night Walk,” an event held by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society on Saturday evening, November 7th. The money raised goes towards research, therapies, and treatments for patients with blood cancers. SISTERHOOD Sisterhood Scene I hope you and your families have been able to spend time together as we celebrate the High Holidays and the joyous festivals of Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah. We are blessed with some beautiful holiday traditions!

It is those traditions and the various mitzvot we are commanded to perform as Jews that are the focus of my thoughts today. Perhaps because we have updated and reopened the Baum Judaica Gift Shop, I have been thinking of the ideal of Hiddur Mitzvah, beautifying the mitzvah.

The source text for this can be found in Exodus 15:2, which states, “This is my God and I will glorify Him.” We don’t just do the minimum required for a mitzvah, but we should enhance, enrich, and beautify our observance. Fulfilling God’s commandments is not a burden, but rather a great pleasure.

When we think of the mitzvot

associated with our Jewish festivals, we often think about the items that we utilize in performing them and how special they are—whether they were given to us as gifts, made by our children in school, or heirlooms handed down from generation to generation. My Friday night candle lighting becomes more meaningful when I use the candle holders that my mother used for more than sixty years of married life.

We are fortunate that some very dedicated Sisterhood members have undertaken the task of revitalizing the Baum Judaica Gift Shop to ensure that our congregants have access to items for every Jewish occasion. We are grateful for the efforts of Carole Graham, Ellen Hollander, Phoebe Gross, and Erica Epstein, who are working to make sure that all of our mitzvot and holiday traditions may be celebrated in truly beautiful ways.

NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS kinesthetic learners—they learn about their world through their senses—we approached this part of our curriculum by allowing many opportunities for sensory exploration. Beginning with Rosh Hashanah, children observed, touched, smelled and tasted different types of apples. Math language was developed as children graphed their favorite varieties. We even had our “moment in the sun” as we were featured on Channel 2 News, with Jen Vegh, a Shoresh parent, blowing the shofar as the children compared and contrasted the variety of blasts—short ones, long ones, staccato sounds, elongated sounds.

This month we will continue to explore and learn about our Jewish holidays of Sukkot and Simchat Torah. Hope you will join us on Thursday, October 1st, for Supper in the Sukkah, our first J-LIFE event. We also are looking forward to beginning our many enrichment activities–Shirah - Music, with Lori and Bobby Doowah; Rikud - Movement and Drumming, with Shmulik; and Teva - Science and Nature, with Gail. We have such a rich program!

We are also blessed to work with a professional, calm, devoted, and caring staff that has made the beginning weeks of school run so smoothly. And, we are blessed to work with all of you parents, relatives, and caregivers, who were so gentle and present for your children. Your trust and confidence in us helped to effectively make the giant transition from home to school so that together we could successfully launch the year ahead.

The beginning of the school year coincided with the beginning of the Jewish year as well, 5776. Our first Hebrew month, Tishrei, is chock full of holidays which presented wonderful experiential learning opportunities for the Nursery School. Since children are

Youth Community Update The Youth Community kicked off our year with a fan favorite—Family Sukkah Decorating! Families with children of all ages joined together to make and hang decorations in the Beth El sukkah. They had fun getting to know one another and participating in this lovely mitzvah. We are looking forward to a busy month of October as all of our groups gear into action.

Religious School News Religious School began a few weeks ago with an exciting Opening Day. After sharing in a delicious bagel breakfast, learners went to their classrooms for teambuilding games, while parents participated in their own ice-breaker games to build relationships with other Religious School parents. Beth El is proud of its commitment to offer a minyan 365 days a year, morning and evening. Some days we have plenty of participants.

Yet on other days, it is not as easy. We encourage you to make a commitment of one day a month or a week or whatever you are able to do in order to preserve our minyan. For your convenience, our minyan times can be found in this Bulletin,on page 16, bottom left. The below article by past president Marc Klee explains the importance of this mitzvah.

OUR DAILY MINYAN – WE NEED YOUR HELP

Call it an idiosyncrasy, a superstition, or whatever term you prefer, but for fifty-nine years I studiously left services whenever Yizkor began. That changed for me a year and a half ago, when I lost my father followed seven months later by my mother’s passing.

Consequently, virtually every day for the past 18 months I went to Minyan, both in the morning and evening, and usually at Beth El to say Kaddish. I have gained an incredible admiration for our “Minyanaires” who show up regularly to support people like me.

When we began the recent search for a new Rabbi, the committee spent a lot of time listening to the thoughts and comments we received from so many of you. The single word we heard over and over again was “Community.” While I had seen examples of it in many instances, nothing compared to the support that my brother and I and our families received from so many of you after losing our parents. But, the daily Minyanim brought that sense of community

to another level.

There were days when the Minyan wasn’t very satisfying, where I just went through the motions feeling no emotional attachment to the prayers. On the other hand, there were days when I was very moved, finding great peace and satisfaction. I never knew in advance what my reaction and feelings would be, but I continued to attend, gaining much overall. Over the past year and a half I prayed in various locales, from Reform to Orthodox synagogues, and from the balcony of a cruise ship to a Yemenite synagogue in Tel Aviv. But mainly it was at Beth El, where the attendees were always so supportive.

But gathering up a Minyan twice a day, every day, is not an easy undertaking. Some days there are twenty or more attendees, but most times we get only ten to fifteen individuals and occasionally we struggle to even get to the necessary ten people to attend. This is so important to those who

are either saying Kaddish or have a yahrzeit.

I know that I will continue coming a few times a week to lend support, and I urge others to please come to Minyan, even if it is just once or twice a month, and help out. Morning Minyan only takes about 40 minutes and Mincha/Ma’ariv (evening) is over in about 18 minutes.

On a personal note, prior to my parents’ passing I almost never attended services on Friday nights, neither as a child nor as an adult. Due to my saying Kaddish, that has changed, and I would urge everyone to check out the Friday night service, which is now my favorite of all. This is relatively short (about 50 minutes) featuring prayers with wonderful tunes. For me the highlight is the short Drash given by Rabbi Schuck that is humorous and informative, and never fails to leave me thinking. Whether you know Hebrew or not, it is worth coming out to hear Rabbi’s words of Torah.
