Our 2018 Simchat Torah Honorees ALAN KELLMAN, Hatan Maftir

BERNICE WARD, Kallat Beresheit

Alan grew up on Long Island, where he attended the North Shore Hebrew Academy and the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County.

He went on to study at the University of Pennsylvania, where he met his wife, Allison. At Penn, Alan led the Conservative Jewish community, revitalizing its Shabbat morning services, which previously had difficulty attracting a minyan and finding students who could lead services and read from the Torah on a weekly basis. By the time he graduated, there was a reliable Conservative minyan on Shabbat mornings that even began to draw prospective students to the school.

After receiving his degree in Systems Engineering from Penn, Alan attended Harvard Law School, where he sought to combine his passion [continued, page 18]

I believe that the twists and turns that life takes are in some way bashert.

My husband, Aba, and I were looking for a house in Jamaica Estates, Queens, but we ended up in New Rochelle. Our second child was on the way and a move was imminent. Paul Ganeles, z”l, sold us New Year cards for a Beth El fund raiser, and that was our welcome to the Beth El Family.

As new members, we enrolled our eldest child, Seth, in Geverret Gorenstein’s mechina class, Michael in preschool, and I learned my alef bet along with them at Rena Strauch’s class. I had no previous Hebrew School background, and it was a good way to learn with my children. It was easy to get involved with the Beth El community. I helped make hamantaschen for the Purim Carnival, volunteered for the [continued, page 18]

Larry Epstein grew up in Queens and attended medical school in Tel Aviv.

Living in Israel for 4 years made Zionism a central theme in Larry’s life, a value he shares with his wife Erica. Erica and Larry married in 1985 and moved here in 1989, immediately joining Beth El. They were soon followed by Erica’s parents, Mike and Laura. Laura still spends ½ the year in New Rochelle and is an active member. Larry’s parents live full time in Florida. Erica and Larry raised Mollie and Marc here at Beth El and sent them to Solomon Schechter for elementary and middle school. They went on to New Rochelle High School and then Marc attended the University of Rochester, followed by Fordham Law School and Mollie attended Vanderbilt University. Marc lives in Park Slope (where he was born!) [continued, page 18]

Shireen grew up in Great Neck, where Judaism and volunteer-ism became a part of her life early on. Her family was active in their Conservative Synagogue and also attended a Sephardi shul with her father’s Persian side of the family; giving her the opportunity to experience both Sephardic and Ashkenazi traditions. As a child, Shireen would sit at the kitchen table and help her mother staple and mail the Hadassah Bulletin. Her involvement in Jewish life continued into high school where she was active in her local USY chapter and participated in USY on Wheels and Israel Pilgrimage during the summer.

Once at Binghamton University, she joined Hillel The Jewish Student Union. She also recruited for Project OTZMA: a one-year leadership [continued, page 18] 3

RABBI’S MESSAGE sight of the fact that it is not the raison d’être of synagogue life.

Things are coming into focus regarding the vision of the synagogue, but I want to caution people from falling into the trap of thinking that the only reason to do something is because “it will get more young families to join the synagogue.” Whether it’s a new program, initiative, service, or changes to our physical structure, the drive to undertake these projects is to ensure that our offerings are of the highest quality and the most engaging that they can be for each one of us. Of course we will work to draw new families to our community, but the most effective way to do this is by investing our services and programming with integrity, energy, and the right combination of tradition and innovation.

There are no quick fixes to demographic struggles, but one thing I know for sure: a synagogue that builds its religious, spiritual, and communal structures with the overarching goal of bringing young families into the community is more like a country club than a synagogue. At our core must be our values. Attracting young families is a tactical goal, a very important one for sure, but it will be the compelling Jewish life of the synagogue that attracts them, and that life is enriched by people of all ages.

The religious and spiritual experience of the elders of our community are just as important to me and to the vibrancy of our synagogue as the experience of our young families. So next time you hear yourself say, “This was a wonderful program but there were not a lot of young families present,” or “This change would be exciting to me but will it really bring new families to Beth El?” remind yourself that you are deserving of that change and that wonderful program.

Together, we will continue to build a synagogue that enriches the lives of people of all ages, and this, I believe, will compel others to want to join us in this holy work.

Dear Friends, I write this as we prepare for Sukkot, but by the time you read this Bulletin, the yamim noraim (high holidays) will have receded into a memory. As a new year begins, there is often a verse or a melody from these sacred days that stays with me.

Rabbi David Schuck This year, I have been thinking about a verse from the Book of Psalms which is placed in our liturgy for dramatic impact: ֽ‫ׁשַּ֭ת־לַא‬ ְ ‫׃ינִֵבֽזְַעַּת־לֽא ַ יִ֗ח ּ֝כ ֹ תֹו֥לְכִּכ ה ָ֑נְקזִ ת ֵ ֣עְל ינִֵכיִל‬ Do not cast me off in old age; when my strength fails, do not forsake me!

Of course, in our liturgy, the verse is made plural, which increases the communal significance of this value. We must never cast our elders aside in this life stage, and synagogue cultures would be wise to pay close attention.

As we move forward in Journey, our visioning and strategic planning process, it’s natural that there would be increased scrutiny around some of the new initiatives with which we are experimenting.

Yet, there is one piece of feedback that I occasionally hear which I think is worth correcting. There is an assumption that a successful program or service is defined by the number of young families who attend. Though I understand this instinct, it completely undermines the values of our community, which is that every single member of Beth El deserves high-level programming and religious experiences regardless of his or her stage of life.

Building a vibrant future in a synagogue requires the community to work hard to ensure, first and foremost, that the offerings of the synagogue are of a high quality. In time, when these programs and services are complimented with intentional outreach to new families, the community can experience growth. Growing the membership of a synagogue is imperative for its survival, but we must never lose

Dr. Beth Breakstone in Museum, through October 14th Art Inspired by Nature: A Physician’s Perspective

Putting up one of the sukkahs rented by a Beth El family through our “Rent a Sukkah” program.

Dr. Beth Breakstone retired from a career in pathology and then pursued her dream of becoming a botanical and avian artist. She enrolled in a class at the New York Botanical Garden. Asked why a physician would become such an artist, she replied that botanical and natural science art and illustration allowed her to combine her artistic interest with her scientific background. Her powers of observation, honed after years of looking at tissue under a microscope, were similar to the observation required to understand a subject and render it “biologically correct.”

Her early work was faithful to natural science art and illustration and based on specimens that she collected, caught, fixed and pinned to be able to draw the fine details from life. An avid birder, her bird portraits are based on photos taken by her husband while on bird walks together. The botanical butterfly and bird paintings were initially painted with pan pastels, enabling large areas of bright color to be laid down quickly. Intricate details were added with hard pastels and colored pencils. Now, her choices of media include colored pencil, watercolor, gouache, acrylic, pastels, and India ink. She has been expanding her subject matter, especially landscapes inspired by her travels and the beauty of nature. Her work can be viewed at bethbreakstoneArtMd.com. A percentage of all sales will be donated to Beth El. 4

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE When you step up to join a committee or help in some way at Beth El, you can be sure that you are helping others and contributing to your community in a meaningful and impactful way. And it’s not just beneficial to others, but usually ends up enhancing your existing skills Mark Seidenfeld and giving you the opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people, while providing you a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment knowing that you have stepped up to make a difference. Beth El needs you, your community needs you, and I believe contributing your time and skills to your community enriches your life in ways you wouldn’t have expected. Whether it’s helping with an existing committee or program or bringing new ideas forward, the opportunities are there for you to make a difference.

“Oh, I can do that” We’ve all been through this, defaulting to the answer that will avoid any further commitments in our already overburdened lives.

Work, family, and life in general pulls us in so many different directions that we try to insulate ourselves from taking on anything else. It’s understandable. But how about those times that you did say “yes” to helping someone out? When you agreed to work on a meaningful project with others? When you contributed your time, skill, and efforts to help make something special happen or something more routine that you know is vital to others?

Volunteering to help actually brings meaning and fulfillment to us when we put ourselves out there. Of course, it sometimes comes with challenges. But anything worthwhile always has its challenges.

LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

Music, Singing, Meditation, and Prayer at Beth El Many of you have already participated in some of our new programs and services. This year we are looking to deepen those experiences considerably, as well as initiate a few new ones.

Our goal is to use music and silence to strengthen our bonds as a community and to enable each of us to find ways to enrich our relationship with the liturgy and our time-honored and sacred traditions. Music has a power to engage all of us, whether young or old, new to Jewish practices or well-versed, and we encourage you to join us on this spiritual adventure with an open heart and an open mind.

SINGING AS A SPIRITUAL PRACTICE

Our ongoing exploration of singing and new nigunim, wordless melodies, as a way of touching the deepest recesses of our souls. No special skills or talents are required. If you’ve never prayed, this is an opportunity to experience transcendence without words of any kind. If you like to pray, these sessions will enhance and enrich your prayers with melodies that we will use in many of our services.

The Library is there for you to use. Please keep in mind that there is no longer a librarian.

A group of volunteers do their best to keep the library neat and useful, but we could use your help. Here is how it works.

1) The library key is available in the main office. You may take out any books except those marked REFERENCE. The reference books may be used in the library only.

2) Please fill in your name on the card that is in the book, and leave it on the desk. Note: If you visit the library on Shabbat and opt to take a book home, please come back the next day to complete the card in the book!

3) Books should be returned to the basket in the library marked RETURN BOOKS HERE. If the library is locked, you can return your book to the wall hamper right outside the library.

4) Books which you look at, but don’t take out, should be returned to the spot where they were originally found. Fiction books are filed by author’s last name. Non-fiction books are filed by call number, which is written on the spine of the book.

5) At the present time, we are accepting donations of current fiction and non-fiction books on Jewish themes or by Jewish authors.

These donations should be left on the desk in the library.

Jewish views of sex and sexuality have unfolded over millennia in wildly diverse ways. Is sex a mitzvah? A temptation to be overcome? A reflection of Divine activity between God and the Shekhina? Only for procreation or something to be enjoyed? As in many other areas of Jewish thought, there is no one monolithic Jewish view of sex and sexuality. We will explore representative literary selections of Jewish thought and expression on this topic, from the Talmud through Kabbalah, and more, as they unfold throughout our history and in varying communities. Materials will be supplied by the instructor along with suggestions for additional voluntary reading. No previous knowledge is needed. This class meets at Beth El, Wednesdays, 9:45 am – 12:00 noon. Our community is diverse; people have varying degrees of knowledge about Jewish text, tradition, worship, and access to Hebrew vocabulary. Since Jewish prayer assumes a certain amount of background exposure and knowledge, this service is intended to create an access point into prayer for those who may feel lost and/or alienated from our typical prayer services. This service is an introductory exploration of the prayer service. Each prayer will be studied in depth and read in English to gain a basic understanding of its meaning and intent. We will discuss the basic physical mechanics of each prayer when necessary. It is our hope that over time, everyone in our community will be able to enter the sanctuary with confidence and feel at home.

Answer: In their respective Rosh Hashanah sermons, our rabbis created a potential road map for us. Rabbi Sitkin, who opened his new year message with the unexpected announcement, “I love my i Phone,” ultimately advised that he loved human interaction more.

Rabbi Schuck gently suggested a guide for those interactions— seeing, or at least trying to see, the road through the eyes of the other.

Beth El’s Journey process, through close-to-superhuman efforts by synagogue professionals and volunteers, followed these suggestions long before Rosh Hashanah, repeatedly bringing together diverse opinions, backgrounds, and values in large rooms, small rooms, around tables, behind desks, in groups, and individually (and also by i Phone), to chart our course together. Results are anticipated in December, while interactions continue.

The Keruv committee hopes to do the same. Let’s Talk About It sessions, created years ago for families experiencing intermarriage or inter-dating, are typically held in members’ homes and without clergy present. Our first Let’s Talk About It meeting of the new year 5779, however, will break with business as usual. On October 18th, Let’s Talk About It will meet at Beth El (see box below for details), and Rabbi Schuck has graciously agreed to come, listen, and answer questions. Whomever you are, and wherever your heart and head stand on this existential matter, you are warmly invited to attend.

Join the conversation, humans with humans, possibly seeing for a short while through each others’ eyes.

As this issue of The Bulletin goes to print, the High Holiday season is drawing to its close. During the High Holidays, when thousands of individuals come to Beth El, the Keruv Committee is especially grateful to our clergy, professional staff, and volunteers.

They usher in each holiday facing a myriad of responsibilities required by Torah, tradition, safety precautions, and personal comfort. Each holiday, they also move closer toward achieving two goals at the heart of Keruv—ensuring that visitors feel welcome and that members feel at home, secure, and comfortable.

We witnessed several examples of such Beth El warmth. On Rosh Hashanah, a longtime member serving as a sanctuary usher helped a young family with unruly toddlers by pausing to speak with the children, inviting them to work with him as a “guard,” and otherwise sufficiently distracting them to allow the parents to find their seats and settle in. Another example—Director of Teen Engagement Bekkah Gold greeted a family at Teen Services, whisking their teen-aged son into a group of Beth El teens, making introductions all around. Just two of hundreds upon hundreds of visitor welcomes.

Keeping Beth El members secure and comfortable in our community may be the tougher goal. Navigating potential changes, including our synagogue’s “Journey,” renovations to the sanctuary, not to mention controversies within the Conservative movement, especially difficult discussions among its leadership about intermarriage, all make for sometimes shaky ground on which to determine where we stand.

Sisterhood also participates in activities outside the walls of Beth El. Barry Charles Hoffman, the orchestra’s conductor and a Beth El member, has offered us a block of tickets for this event. The holidays are now a pleasant memory, and Sisterhood is busy planning our programs for 5779. This is also the time of year for me to reach out to ALL the women of Beth El Synagogue Center and ask them to become part of our Sisterhood. If you are currently employed, if you’re a stay at home mom, if you’re retired, if you’re a grandma, if you’re a new mother, or an empty nester, we have a place for you in our ranks. We need everyone to come together to support Sisterhood and enable our programs to succeed.

By joining Sisterhood, you can help us continue the many different projects we do for the entire Beth El community.

At the end of August you received our 2018-2019 Sisterhood Scene Newsletter describing what Sisterhood does for the Beth El community. Last month we met with the Go Green Committee to see how Sisterhood can help Beth El reduce our use of disposable plastic dishes and utensils. Together we are investigating alternatives and looking into how Sisterhood can help fund this project that will better our synagogue community and the greater New Rochelle community. We also support other activities here to meet the needs of our women. For exercise we have walking club. For games we have Mah Jongg and Canasta. Bagels and Books and Wine & Cheese Evening Book Club provide you with an opportunity to read and discuss some of the latest books. For those who like to cook, we do cooking for the HOPE Soup Kitchen.

NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS Although we normally invite our families to bring their children for a classroom visit before school begins, usually on a Sunday, that didn’t work out this year due to the way the holidays fell. Instead, we had a Friday afternoon Classroom Peek, followed

by playing outdoors in our playgrounds. But the best part of the day was the communal CafĂŠ Shabbat dinner that we had outdoors in a tent! It was joyous, musical, tasty, and definitely started our school year off with a wonderful sense of community. May it be the first of many this year! Enjoy some highlights from the pictures below.

Who’s in the Department of Youth & Family Engagement?

Our department aims to provide social experiences for children Kindergarten through 12th grade in a Jewish environment. Our team of youth advisors makes sure that our kids and families are having fun all year long and we are so grateful for their energy and presence in our community.

Stephanie will be the Youth Advisor for our younger two youth groups, Ruach (K-2nd Grade) and Chaverim (3rd-5th Grade), enhancing their program tremendously and working to get to know both kids and families alike. Want to participate? Have questions? Contact us!

In addition to running Family Kehillah Services on Saturday mornings, Andrew works closely with our teen leadership in order to ensure that we are at the forefront of teen engagement. Andrew is also a music educator, currently working as the band director for Pelham Middle School and Pelham High School. He lives in New Rochelle with his adorable pup (pictured).

MAX LEADER, OUR KADIMA ADVISOR, is no rookie here at Beth El. Joining us for his fourth year, Max will be working with our middle schoolers. He is thrilled to work with a group of kids who he has seen grow up through our Ruach and Chaverim groups. We are so happy to have him in this capacity!

Max was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. In high school, he was extremely active in USY, which culminated in his serving as regional president for Southwest USY region. Max attended Rutgers University and, post-graduation, moved to New York City. He now resides in the East Village. When he isn’t at Beth El, Max works on a media operations team.

A new dismissal procedure is in place each Thursday that Religious School is in session, between 5:40 pm and 6:10 pm. Cars enter the parking lot through the entrance closer to North Avenue on Northfield Road, looping through the parking lot and snaking up to the front entrance, picking up your children at the red doors by the Office of Youth & Family Engagement. Families received color-coded cards with the name and class for each of their children. Parents/caregivers will hand one card to Stephanie, who will get your child, and your child will hand you back your card as a match to ensure everyone is safe. If you prefer to park, use the second entrance on Northfield Road, further from North Avenue. Educators will be stationed outside so that the path to the second and third parking lots are accessible to anyone trying to enter or exit the building. If you plan to leave during this window, please park in the second or third parking lots.

Our handicap spaces are still available in the front lot for those with a handicap sticker. Please be patient while waiting to access these spots. This new dismissal procedure will help us maintain the safety of our children and will hopefully expedite dismissal overall.

A Note from the Director…

October Teen Highlights

And in a flash, September has passed us by and we are well into the new school year. What a hectic and exciting time! There is so much build-up, so many new experiences, new people—it is oftentimes surprising when we round the corner and enter October.

This past month has been a time of new beginnings. With Rosh Hashanah falling early in the month, the beginning of the new Religious School year, new teachers, new professional staff, a new role for me—the importance of being present for ourselves, our learners, and our families is even more relevant than ever.

During our Religious School Educator Orientation, we spoke of the importance of bringing our true selves forward when we are at Beth El. Whether we are speaking with a child, a parent, a colleague, or taking a moment to ourselves, the more authentic we each can be, the more we are able to be present for our learners.

As we move into October, I am thinking about the power of being our truest selves. The Department of Youth and Family Engagement should be a place you can be yourselves and feel comfortable, happy, content, and heard. With the addition of Stephanie Lederman to our department, we are happy to come to our office each and every day, eager to create a positive, meaningful environment for you and your family.

for technology and the law. Those dual interests led him to a career in patent litigation, which he has been practicing for the past nineteen years in New York City.

After law school, Alan and Allison lived in New York City, as Alan worked in Manhattan and Allison completed medical school at Yale and her residency at Columbia. Twelve years ago they moved to New Rochelle, where Allison grew up.

Beth El has been an important part of Alan and Allison’s lives since they moved to New Rochelle. Both of their children, Naomi and Joshua, are graduates of Beth El’s Nursery school, and both attended Beth El Day Camp. Alan serves on Beth El’s Ritual Committee and coordinates the Haftarah reading.

Alan strongly believes that a vibrant Jewish community is one in which all members feel welcome and able to participate in religious practice. Over the past year, with the invaluable support of Beth El’s clergy and numerous lay leaders, Alan has implemented Beth El’s Torah Reading Initiative, which empowers congregants to become actively involved in reading from the Torah during Shabbat and for holiday morning services. Dozens of congregants have already participated, and Alan hopes to continue growing the program in the years to come.

Alan is excited to have been chosen as one of this year’s Simchat Torah honorees, and wishes all of the honorees a muchdeserved mazal tov!

Kiddush Committee, and taught a Sisterhood class in the making of a tallit. It was also possible for me to take classes. Classes in Judaic Studies, Jewish history, and religious observances were all available, and I took advantage to learn as much as I could.

Another example of bashert… I was having lunch with a friend at Montefiore Hospital and I ran into my former boss from Sloan Kettering. He offered me a job in the lab with an interesting project. It would have been hard to turn down such an opportunity. So, I added chemist to my resume. While we weren’t looking, our children finished Hebrew School, joined USY, and were very involved in Sabbath observances. And then, they went to college, got jobs, left home, married, and had children of their own, and continued the cycle.

I am able to say that I am a very happy person. My life has been filled with many friends, lots of family, and with Aba’s help along the way, I was able to do it all. I am very thankful to be part of a supportive community and to share this day with everyone.

experience in Israel; separately she visited Israel upon graduation. While in college, she ended up meeting her future husband, Matt, at an AEPi party. Coincidently, Matt’s grandmother and Shireen’s Persian grandmother had a mutual ‘shul friend.’ It was bashert. They married in 2004!

In 2006, they moved to Westchester. Matt and Shireen joined Beth El as a young married couple, sitting at the “kids” table on Shabbat. Once their first child, Juliette, was born, they quickly became immersed at Beth El. Shireen served as the Nursery School Board President and on the Programming Think Tank.

She has helped at various synagogue initiatives and events over the years. Most recently, she was a member of the Deep Dive Dues Committee, as part of the Journey process. Her daughters both attended Beth El Day Camp and Nursery School. Juliette, 9, is currently enrolled in the Religious School and Isabelle just started the 3s program this past September.

Shireen earned her master’s degree in Public Administration from New York University. She has worked at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center since 2004; her most recent job is Administrative Manager in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. In addition to her daily responsibilities at MSK, for the last three years she has played an active role organizing a “Cycle for Survival” team, who participates in an annual event raising funds to conduct research on rare cancers.

Shireen is extremely grateful for the support of her husband, children, family, and friends. Beth El has been like a second home, and she is thankful to be a part of a warm and loving community.

Larry is an anesthesiologist who specializes in Pain Medicine. He works at Mount Sinai Hospital, where he is director of the division.

He is committed to the advancement of Healthcare and has served as president of the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists, and currently serves as chair of the New York State Board of Medicine. Larry is a Registered Parliamentarian. He is a certified pilot and built his own airplane, and currently builds guitars. On Shabbat morning, he can usually be found in the Beth El sanctuary, where he enjoys serving as Gabbi and then helps set up the weekly kiddush lunch.
