“In a place where there are no people, strive to be a person,” often interpreted to mean, “In a place where there are no leaders, strive to be a leader.”

Hillel is teaching us that someone has to take responsibility, and if there is no one prepared to do so, then you be the one. That doesn’t necessarily mean be the only one, but fill the void with the skills you have.

My volunteer journey started seriously in 2001, actually to fill the void. The Bulletin listed the Religious School PTA as “To Be Determined,” and I stepped up to assume the position for the next three years, and then a fourth with Susan Davis. During that time, we tried several new things including increasing the focus on Israel, through new book fair and wine fair vendors, an outdoor campfire night fundraiser, a new Tzahal Passover Hagaddah gift for teachers, and more.

Over the years I continued my journey as a volunteer, leading our “Israel at 55” event and coordinating the Men’s Club Shabbat for four years. Currently, Joyce Wechsler and I run the Summer Israel Film Festival and I encourage everyone to learn about Israel through its diverse culture. Also, for the past two plus years I’ve arranged Seudah Shlisheit each Shabbat afternoon. Fresh food and learning have led to an enriched Seudah.

Together with Jayne Peister, we are leading the “Green Team” in its attempt to make Beth El more environmentally friendly. We’re starting to gain traction, and with your help we will succeed.

Volunteerism has been in my blood since I was a young child. My father and grandfather were among a small cadre of individuals who founded the Young Israel of Woodmere back in the 1950s. I can still recall that minyanim were done on a rotational basis, moving from house to house, including our own, even though they didn’t have a Rabbi. When a Rabbi was finally hired, I remember my father accompanying the Rebbetzin to purchase a house, and my parents were involved in hosting minyan, gathering people, making chulent, Sisterhood president, Youth committee, Treasurer, organizing a permanent kitchen… and too many other things. That synagogue now has about 1,000 families, eight daily morning minyanim, seven on Shabbat, all kinds of Torah classes, and has spawned countless shuls in the area. A community that started with a handful, a minyan so to speak, is now a large one of very active volunteers.

In Pirkei Avot 2:6 Hillel Ben Gamliel says:

“Learning is greater than action for learning is what inspires us to act.”

Originally, the word Gabbai was an Aramaic word for a tax collector, but now it is used to describe the people/person who assist(s) the running of synagogue services. During services at Beth El, we have two types of Gabbaim, those who stand on both sides of the Torah reader, checking the text and assisting those called for a Torah Honor, and the “floor” Gabbai who assigns honors, answers questions, and acts as a liaison between the clergy and the congregation.

Thirty years ago, the “floor” Gabbai was one man. Approximately twenty-five years ago, a few additional men were added to a small rotation. And, after Beth El became fully egalitarian, women were added to the rotation as well. Today, four women and three men— Susan Solow-Dubin, Avi Einzig, Lauren Freeman-Bosworth, Donna Levy, Michael Wechsler, Robin Yairi, and Steven Young—serve the congregation on a rotating basis.

On Shabbat and Yom Tov mornings, the Gabbai receives a list of honors assigned to those celebrating a simcha or observing a yahrzeit. We work with the rabbis to assign any open honors and pay particular attention to newcomers and visitors. If there is a simcha, we work with the family to ensure that their guests are where they should be and that they understand their honors and roles. Additionally, we work with the ushers and greeters if there are any out of the ordinary situations that require the attention of the clergy or maintenance staff.

Members are urged to call the office during the week if they have a specific reason to request an honor. The Gabbaim welcome suggestions and attempt to accommodate all requests if there are openings. We are all honored to serve the community and assist in the orderly running of the service.

Over the past few years, part of our emerging vision is the idea that Torah learning is a core value of our community. It’s our belief that Limmud, or Jewish learning, can change lives and lead to renewal and transformation. And it is for that reason that we have created many opportunities for the community to come together and learn in a way we might never have before; to explore traditional texts in the hopes of finding answers to some of the questions we didn’t even know we had.

In addition to some of the daytime classes that have taken place over the years—like those taught by Rabbi Molly Karp, Rabbi David Hojda, Jack Gruenberg, Dr. Carol Diament, and Rabbi David Schuck—we now offer a few weekly learning opportunities in the evening. Most notably among these is our award-winning Open Beit Midrash initiative. Each week we come together to share food and drinks, in a setting that is relaxed and non-judgmental, in order to build new relationships and strengthen old ones. We then break up into a few classes. At the end of each month, we invite a scholar from the New York area to teach a subject in their field of study, something we do all together as one community. It is easier for words of Torah to penetrate our hearts when we are together.

Another new addition to our learning programming at Beth El is our Jewish Parenting Learning Circle. This is a discussion-based learning with Rabbi Schuck for our parents of school-aged children.

Parents are encouraged to think about issues involved in parenting through a Jewish lens. We are so proud of our classes and access to high-quality Torah learning and we hope that everyone connected to our community in some way or another will come and learn with us!

OPEN BEIT MIDRASH: NOVEMBER Each week (on alternating Tuesdays and Thursdays), Open Beit Midrash attendees will study Jewish texts—ranging from Chassidic thought to Jewish law—with Beth El’s Rabbi David Schuck and Rabbi Zach Sitkin as well as Rabbi Ethan Linden, the executive director of Ramah Berkshires. Each Rabbi will focus on a different topic each week and you can choose which session you’d like to attend. In addition to the weekly classes, scholars from around the NY area will teach once a month on topics related to their respective fields—from prayer and ethics to contemporary Jewish issues. Rabbinic Fellow, Jessica Fisher will also teach one of the classes this month.

We begin at 7:30 p.m. with drinks and food followed by learning promptly at 8:00 p.m.

OPEN BEIT MIDRASH: SCHOLAR VISIT Medieval Jews and Christians Read Scripture

Thursday, November 21 | 7:30 p.m.

Robert A. Harris is professor of Bible and Ancient Semitic Languages at The Jewish Theological Seminary, teaching courses in biblical literature and commentary, particularly medieval Jewish biblical exegesis. Over the years, Dr. Harris has served JTS in a variety of roles, including assistant to the director of The JTS Library, professor-in-residence at Camp Ramah in the Poconos, and director of several musical theater productions. Dr. Harris is an expert in the history of medieval biblical exegesis. His dissertation was titled The Literary Hermeneutic of Rabbi Eliezer of Beaugency. In 2004 he published a book in the Brown Judaic Studies series, Discerning Parallelism: A Study in Northern French Medieval Jewish Biblical Exegesis. In addition, he has published many articles and reviews in both American and Israeli journals.

As I mentioned on Kol Nidre, participating in Beth El’s programs is an opportunity, a privilege of being a Mark Silver member of this wonderful community, not an obligation. But while participating in our programs is not obligatory, I believe that as members of the Beth El community we do have an important responsibility to engage in acts of chesed— often translated as acts of loving kindness. We have a wonderful Chesed Committee that helps those in need. I encourage you to contact Sandy Gruenberg (gamson36@gmail.com) or Ellen Gelboim (esgelboim@gmail.com) to volunteer. Or contact Rabbi Sitkin (zsitkin@bethelnr.org) to participate in our Bikkur Cholim program (visiting the sick). But, of course, no formal mechanism is needed to help others. Feel free to use your own initiative to call or visit a person who isn’t well, invite someone to lunch or dinner, or approach a newcomer or a mourner at minyan. This is all part of how we enrich our lives while enriching those of others.

The current month of Heshvan is referred to as “Mar Heshvan”—“bitter Heshvan”—because unlike Tishrei, with its many holidays, Heshvan has none. Although devoid of holidays, Heshvan is an important month on Beth El’s calendar since it is when our programming year gets into full swing. So this seems like a fitting time to ask yourself how you want Beth El to fit into your plans for the coming months.

What is the right activity for you to add to your Beth El portfolio? This Bulletin, our website (www.bethelnr.org), our Shabbat Announcements, the mid-week “Ride the El!” email, and the rack of flyers in the lobby offer numerous events that might hit the spot. On the other hand, we offer so many programs from which to choose that it can be overwhelming. To be honest, I don’t always make it through to the end of the Shabbat announcements and sometimes a great program sneaks up on me and surprises me. Often the best ideas come from like-minded congregants. Why not reach out to your Beth El friends to find out their favorite events—and maybe join them? Conversely, please recommend your favorites to others and bring them with you. And when you visit “The Den@Beth El” in the Wiener Lounge for a cup of coffee or a schmooze—and I hope you will—this sounds to me like a good topic for conversation.

KERUV* KORNER This column reaches you during a quiet, holiday-free pause in the Jewish calendar. It was penned, however, from deep within the stream of our yamim noraim, Days of Awe (Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur), as they flowed into the z’man simhateinu, Time of Our Joy (Sukkot and Simchat Torah). And it is to that earlier time, on the morning after Yom Kippur, that I’d like us to return for the rest of this column.

The Keruv Committee, along with other dedicated committees and individuals, devote substantial energy toward the common goal of “inclusion”— ensuring that all who walk through Beth El’s doors seeking engagement with Judaism are welcomed and, ultimately, Jewishly enriched. During Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, sermons and speeches interspersed throughout prayer services devoted quiet but persistent attention to inclusion.

Rabbi Sitkin offered the vision of a growing Bikkur Cholim effort to make certain that when individuals who desire to Jewishly engage are unable to walk through Beth El’s

doors, we will reverse standard operating procedure and walk through theirs. BESC President Mark Silver detailed new initiatives to bring our community closer and, in doing so, abbreviated the synagogue’s mission to eight words: Beth El’s goal is to enrich people’s lives, all lives.

And Rabbi Schuck, in stirring and moving addresses, reminded us of the historical perspective on inclusion.

The day after Yom Kippur saw a gathering of citizens at Westchester’s Holocaust Memorial Garden, responding to a cowardly anti-Semitic act of vandalism on erev Yom Kippur. It was certainly gratifying to see other faith leaders in attendance, yet the historical perspective—and the lesson repeatedly taught for centuries—is that if we, all of us, do not stand together, we will not stand at all.

THE HAFTARAH INITIATIVE

We are pleased to announce a new initiative to encourage broader participation in the Haftarah reading during Shabbat services. Steven Cohen has agreed to oversee this effort and will be reaching out to various groups and individuals over the coming weeks and months to solicit volunteers.

We encourage all those interested in reading Haftarah to sign up using the Beth El sign up link at bethelnr.org/torahsignup and to feel free to reach out to Steven (scohen@kanekessler. com) or Cantor Aqua (uaqua@bethelnr.org) with any questions or requests for assistance.

A special request is being made to those that may have given thought over the years about reading the Haftarah, but have been reluctant because of a weaker knowledge of Hebrew or trope. Please reach out to Steven on Shabbat or by email and let him know who you are— without any obligation.

Kanner-Kurzon Museum Welcomes Artist Laura Renee Beth El is proud to welcome its newest exhibit to the museum. “Some Place Like Home,” by local artist Laura Renee, will be in our Kanner-Kurzon Museum through the end of November.

There will be an artist reception on Thursday, November 21st, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm. Come and enjoy wine and cheese while you view her artwork! You can also view the artist’s work on her website at laurarenee.com.

About the artist Laura Renee was born in Brooklyn, New York, and spent her childhood in New Jersey. She became interested in drawing and painting at an early age and quickly began to view the world with an artist’s eye. After developing her own style, Renee graduated from Muhlenberg College with a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art. While continuing her studies at the Arts Students League of New York and living in Hoboken, New Jersey, Renee was inspired to paint scenes capturing Hoboken’s old world charm. The vibrant colors and energy of the city had a lasting impression on the young artist. Renee spent 10 years living and painting in Hoboken where she exhibited her work at several locations including the Hoboken Historical Museum and Gallery 1200. Renee left her mark on the city with several murals which can be seen at the Hoboken Hospital, as well as the Hoboken Multipurpose Center.

Now living with her husband and daughter in Westchester, NY, Renee is finding her inspiration from her newly adopted hometown of New Rochelle and the nearby towns along the Hudson River and Sound Shore. She continues to paint from life and captures the old-world charm of these historic towns. Her warm color palette, expressive brushwork, and unique use of perspective gives a fresh interpretation to some of these timeless waterfront communities most cherished landmarks. With a passion for life, her paintings bring forth images of the world around her. Her work graces many public sites and private collections nationwide.

He previously served as Vice-Chairman of the Board, and on January 6, 2014 was elected as Chairman of the Board and re-elected as Chairman, unanimously, in 2016. As Chairman, Kaplowitz led the Legislature in passing major initiatives, such as a public-private partnership with the County’s historic Playland Amusement Park and most recently, the lease of the “North 60” property in Valhalla, which will soon be home to a major $1.2 billion bio-tech center and many new, good paying jobs. Throughout his 21-year career in public service, Kaplowitz has earned a reputation as a Legislator who works diligently to foster an atmosphere of collegiality with all of his colleagues.

This new month, which began with a two day Rosh Hodesh, or new moon, began on October 29th and 30th. Now comes the month of Heshvan, or Marheshvan as it is called in most Rabbinic literature. Until the Babylonian exile, the months were referred to by their order such as the first month or the fifth month, etc. Coming out of Babylonia and being influenced by their ways of life, we added names of various extractions to the list of months. These names have persisted till this day.

Throughout the Mishna and the Talmud, this month is called Marheshvan or bitter Heshvan. This name is also used on legal documents and also when the new month is blessed the Shabbat before the month’s beginning.

So where did this extra name come from? Why is it considered bitter? Some say that since this is a month devoid of all holidays and fast days, it is a bitter month. Our foremothers Sarah and Rachel passed away during this month. Others say that Mar means a “drop of water” since this is the month when the all Jews start praying for rain for the Land of Israel. Whatever its derivation, we at Sisterhood

have taken it upon ourselves to make the month a productive joyous one and not a bitter one this year.

How? First, the ninth of the month brings our concert by the Westchester symphony at Iona College (see box, page 10). Music always lifts the heart. Our annual Paid-Up Membership Dinner will be held on Thursday, November 14th (box below). It will be complete with camaraderie, a boutique, a delicious meal, wine and hors d’oeuvres, and musical accompaniment by our own Jack Klebanow. People lift our energy. Also, our cooking for those-inneed at HOPE Soup Kitchen continues on Tuesdays, led by Barbara Engelson and her crew, and this lifts our spirits. We end the month with the American holiday of Thanksgiving, where families will gather to celebrate the Fall Harvest and our many abundances. Then we look forward to Kislev and the light of the Hanukkah holiday.

NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS Before Simchat Torah, many of our classes went on a Torah Walk and counted all of the Torahs in Beth El Synagogue Center.

While we were in the Chapel we opened the Ark and took out a real Torah. We discussed the many parts of the Torah and we verbalized many new Hebrew vocabulary words: Beit Kenesset.................Synagogue Yad.................................Torah pointer M’eel .............................Torah cover Aron...............................Ark Degel..............................Flag Hashem..........................God Siddur ...........................Prayerbook Our gathering culminated in singing and dancing with the Torahs. Subsequently, each class created an Aron Kodesh, an ark, to house their class Sefer Torah. What a rich month October was!

This past month, chock full of holidays, afforded the Nursery School children an expansive opportunity for deep learning. Shofarot, luluvim, etrogim and Torahs were in all of our classrooms.

There was intense blowing, shaking, smelling, exploring and comparing.

We decorated our outdoor school sukkah with murals, wall hangings, and many artistic creations. Using lumber and PVC pipes, many of our classes built their own sukkah right in their room! Classes were also able to enjoy snack and/or lunch in the many Sukkot of Beth El. We even had a few “off-site” excursions. Our four-year-old classes went by bus on two field trips related to our curriculum— apple cidering at Greenburgh Nature Center and a visit to the Stuart Farm apple orchard. They also walked to Rabbi Sitkin’s sukkah and enjoyed snacks and story time. The Gezah classes went on a fall walk and “discovered” a sukkah right on North Avenue! The children enjoyed a rice and eggroll snack in the Eden Wok sukkah! What a treat!

Religious School Dismissal Procedures

It has been wonderful to spend time with so many of you throughout the holidays this year. From Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur, to all of our Sukkot programming (Sukkah Decorating, Sushi in the Sukkah, the Sukkah Walk…), Horah with the Torah, Petting Zoo Day for Ruach and Chaverim in honor of Parashat Noach, and so much more, we’ve really kicked off the year and we can’t wait for all that’s coming in November!

This month you can hang out with us for Movie Day on Election Day (November 5), so drop your kids off while you head to the polls!

The “No School Party” at Sky Zone on Veteran’s Day (November 11) is open to everyone, and that’s just the beginning! There is fun for kids of all ages—community service hours are available on both of these days for our teens in addition to joining in on the programming fun themselves.

In September we began a new dismissal proceedure. Religious School Dismissal takes place between 5:40 pm and 6:10 pm every Thursday that Religious School is in session. Cars should enter the parking lot through the entrance closer to North Avenue on Northfield Road, looping through the front parking lot and snaking up to the front entrance, picking up children at the red doors by the Office of Youth and Family Engagement. Families were given color-coated cards for each of their children with their name and class listed. Parents or caregivers will put one card in the driver’s side window and hand one card to Stephanie, who will get your child and your child will hand you back your card, as if to match them together so we ensure everyone is safe. For those who would like to park, please use the second entrance on Northfield Road, further from North Avenue. Bekkah will be stationed outside so that the path to the second and third parking lots are accessible to anyone trying to enter or exit the building.

NOTE TO THE COMMUNITY: If you plan to enter and/or leave Beth El during this window, please park in the second and third parking lots. All October Religious School dates are listed under Religious School Highlights.
