The counting of the Omer, the period in between Passover and Shavuot has had various meanings throughout the millennia.One that is particularly resonant for our lives today is the idea of spiritual preparation. Passover, which commemorates the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt is followed by Shavuot, the day the Israelites received the gift of Torah, fifty days later. When we carve out time to count these days one by one, we elicit the same anticipation the Israelites felt as they made their way from Egypt to Mt. Sinai.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Beth El Family, Lately, the Hebrew shoresh (root) ‫( סכך‬sachach) has been on my mind. The verb means to cover or to screen. It is the basis for the word s’chach, which refers to the material covering our sukkot.

And it is also the source for the masach, the screen at the entrance to the Tabernacle. But neither of these is why I have been thinking about this word. Two other nouns account for that. In modern Hebrew, masach also refers to another kind of screen—a video screen. And masecha refers to another type of covering, a facial covering, more commonly known as a mask. The masecha and the masach—the mask and the video screen—have much in common for us today. Each has been a key component of our enduring the current pandemic: the masecha helping to protect us physically from the virus and the masach supporting us psychologically as we cope with our isolation.

But despite what these two have in common, in some sense, they are also very different. While the mask allows us to be in one another’s physical presence, it obscures our faces so we cannot really see each other. How many times have you passed right by someone you know on the street only to turn around and ask, “Is that you?” In contrast, the video screen has enabled us to see each other’s faces sans mask and feel a closer connection one with another, albeit remotely. Together, they have complemented one another as each experience, by itself, is somewhat impoverished.

You will be receiving this Bulletin, more or less, on the oneyear anniversary of the COVID-19 outbreak in New Rochelle on March 3rd. It is difficult to accept that it has been a year now, a year filled not just with a pandemic but with political and social turmoil, as well. But the mask and the video screen and everything that goes with them have helped us persevere. And the development of vaccines, despite the seemingly glacial pace of inoculating

the public, gives us hope for the future.

Still, sometimes we all need an extra lift.

That’s the way I felt last Friday after several hours of addressing the latest pandemic-related challenges confronting Beth El. But then I joined Beth El’s Virtual Kabbalat Shabbat and my spirits were immediately raised by our Rabbis’ uplifting words, by Cantor Schvartz’s beautiful singing, by Jack Klebanow’s energetic keyboarding, and by all of your smiling faces. It was just what I needed.

Mark Silver If you are a Virtual Kabbalat Shabbat regular, you know what I mean. If not, I strongly encourage you to give it a try. It will brighten your day.

Although the pandemic has dragged on, becoming the “same old, same old,” Beth El’s online programming has been fresh and invigorated—indeed, I would say, reinvigorated. These last few months have produced great diversity, creativity, and innovation in our program, with many high-profile guests and well attended programs. I want to thank the clergy team, professional staff, various committees, and assorted congregants who have been responsible for producing these events. And I want to thank all of you for your participation.

As I write these words, Purim is close at hand, although it will already be over by the time you read this. Purim, of course, brings to mind another meaning of masecha, as in masechot and raashanim, masks and groggers. I hope that, despite the difficult times, you all had a Happy Purim!

After telling us her story, Pam will answer any questions from the audience, which is often the most enlightening portion of her program— and, she is just funny. She is always interesting to hear. When she is not on stage, Pamela has worked professionally with teens to foster inclusion and self-acceptance in Jewish institutions, so come with your family. We do recommend that younger children watch with their parents in case they have questions or concerns.

Pamela will be covering some painful and difficult material.

Pnina Tamanu Shata: A Woman to Watch her mother and sisters again.

As a woman of color, Israel’s Pnina Tamanu-Shata has been Tamanu’s family lived for several years in an Israeli government likened to Kamala Harris in her attainment of many firsts. Forget sandcastes, build a frozen snow castle! Or snowmen, snow mountains, snow towers, snow forts, snow volcanoes, snow lanterns, snow sculptures, snow cakes, etc. You can paint the snow, eat the snow, and make angels in the snow. Snow and ice offer kids a neverending supply of elements for creative little minds. It can be easy to think of a season where everything seems monochrome as drab, one without possibilities. But the elements of outdoor winter play are so open-ended that we have at our finger-tips a literal blank canvas of endless opportunity! Creative opportunities abound during this marvelous season!

Winter play is a valuable experience for young children, and although all of the snowfall we had this season might be challenging or even annoying to adults, snow presents wonderful opportunities for learning. Consider the movements associated with outdoor winter play beginning with the simple act of walking in snow or on ice (in thick/heavy boots and clothing, no less). Immediately, the brain is fired up! This is a new experience ­and a complex one. Legs must go higher, balance is tested. Throw in some other activities such as sledding, rolling and even throwing snowballs and you’ve got yourself a season that is filled with opportunities for children to challenge themselves in complex

Sisterhood Scene: Pesach Once Again in Quarantine (of sorts) as a way to share their freedom with the family. Obviously Jewish learning would be preferred, but secular knowledge tied in somehow to the holiday’s themes should also be welcomed.

• Let the kids hide the afikomen and the adults have to find it and still give gifts to he kids for finding interesting hiding places.

• Have different family members find alternate recipes for charoset and maror, maybe highlighting a country from which your family might hail.

• Find activities to engage the younger children like distributing bunches of scallions for them to whip the adult slaves; all come dressed in costumes like slaves with pillowcase dresses and head wraps and sit on pillows on the floor for the first part of the Seder until the meal; show the parting of the Red Sea by taking a bowl of water and sprinkling pepper heavily over its surface and then lightly tapping the surface with a finger that has a little bit of dish detergent on it.

Be creative, be open to learn new things, and be grateful for whatever form your S'darim take. Hag Pesach Sameach – may it be a joyous holiday for one and all.

Remember last year when almost no one could be with family for the holiday of Pesach? The night when more Jews observe a family tradition than any other in the Jewish year was remote or held alone. It was strange for me in two ways. First, the sadness of not being able to join with loved ones and hear their singing voices and chatter. Second, I had to do the four questions at a Seder for the first time in my entire life. Being the number two child of three, my sister was always the youngest until I established my own family and then our kids did it. With just my husband and I doing the actual Seder, it fell to me and I did great!

Well, this year I hope to be vaccinated and together with our kids and so I thought I would take this opportunity to share with you some of our family Seder traditions you might like to incorporate into your own celebrations.

• Assign different parts of the Seder to different people attending or to different family members. Ask them to be creative and to offer a drash, a song, or even a parody as their way of sharing Passover knowledge.

• Have the children prepare something from their school learning

Hi everybody, We’ve had such a great month! At the end of January, we were able to celebrate Tu B’Shevat with the entire Beth El community and the Religious School! Our Shinshinim in Israel ran a spectacular educational program about Tu B’Shevat for all our youth families where we were able to virtually visit their backyards in Israel, see fruit trees growing, learn about gardening, and play some fun games.

Rabbi Josh Warshawsky made a special visit in the Religious School and also joined us for a special Tu B’Shevat Kehillah for all our families—we love our Sunday morning Kehillah! We sang songs together and had a meaningful mini Tu B’Shevat Seder. What a great way to learn about Tu B’Shevat and celebrate with our community!

We have also been having loads of fun with Cooking Chug on Tuesdays at 4:00 pm. Since the New Year, we have indulged in chocolate covered potato chip popcorn—a fan favorite!—and delicious mac n’ cheese. Let’s not forget our very own hummus with chips, a vanilla chocolate glazed cake, monkey bread, hamantaschen, and so much more…It is so hard to figure out which is everyone’s favorite recipe!

Lookout for our special Cooking Chug, event on March 23rd—A decadent flourless chocolate cake perfect for Passover.
