At many of our services, and now at our evening Mishnah study, we say a prayer for healing for those who are ill. Any name added to the Misheberach list will be automatically removed after one month. Some who have experienced a recent loss have posted written reflections and photos of their loved ones for our Beth El community to honor and share in their memory. Mishnah Class

Join us for a 10-minute Mishnah study with our rabbis following morning and evening minyan (*Friday evening's study will begin 15 minutes before Kabbalat Shabbat—timing varies due to Shabbat*). We will recite the names of our loved ones aloud before and after we learn, and then end each mishnah study with the recitation of a communal prayer together in their memory.

RABBI’S MESSAGE Dear Friends, At this time of the year, I would normally peruse the speaker list at AIPAC’s Policy Conference in order to choose the sessions that I want to attend.

Everyone’s taste is different, of course.

Some people like the splashy big names who speak at the policy conference, like Prime Minister Netanyahu or President Biden. I tend to gravitate toward sessions that are smaller and amplify some of the Rabbi David Schuck lesser-known work of AIPAC, or simply showcase interesting things happening in Israel that are not headline-grabbing political news stories.

I am also incredibly proud of the work that AIPAC does around introducing new members of Congress to Israel in a true bipartisan effort. This work, in particular, is critical for the future of the American Israel relationship, as it affords the Jewish community an opportunity to introduce the very people who will vote on legislation that directly impacts Israel’s safety and security to the ways in which a strong and vibrant Israel is a benefit not only to the United States and the Middle East, but to the entire world. In my opinion, this is some of the most important work that AIPAC does.

This election has brought some significant shifts to our branches of government. I am excited that, in coordination with AIPAC, we are bringing Dan Granot to Beth El for a program in which he will outline the new dynamics in the shifting US-Israel relationship.

Dan is the Assistant Director for Policy and Government Affairs at AIPAC and has intimate knowledge about the ways in which our new administration and the new Congress will approach the relationship with Israel. So much has changed in Israel over these past four years as well, so we will have the opportunity to ask about the Abraham Accords, the Iran nuclear agreement, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), as well as the new elections in Israel. It is also an opportunity to learn about the critical work that AIPAC does in general.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Beth El Family, This month, I would like share with you a D’var Torah that I presented to the Board of Trustees at our January meeting. My insights were drawn from Parashat Shemot, the first sedra in the book of Exodus, and were inspired by an online class Shira and I attended by Rabbi Shmuly Yanklowitz, which was sponsored

by Hillel International. Rabbi Yanklowitz was addressing Jewish responsibility in humanitarian crises—in particular, the Uyghur genocide—but I want to take his teachings in a related but slightly different direction.

Early in the Book of Shemot there is a famous incident where Moshe sees an Egyptian oppressing an Israelite and strikes him dead.

This is the first of a series of three events in which Moshe intercedes in acts of aggression. The day after this first incident, he jumps in when two Israelites are fighting. And subsequently, he comes to the aid of Yitro’s daughters who are being oppressed by shepherds. Note the differences among the parties in these three cases: In the first, it is what we might in today’s language call a non-Jew attacking a Jew. In the second, it is two Jews. And the third involves only non-Jews.

All three situations reflect modern-day challenges for us as Jews. We all know that anti-Semitism is on the rise—Rabbi Schuck addressed this in his January column—and we dare not sit idly by.

Similarly, we see internal threats to Jewish harmony—those who would tear us apart from within--and we must therefore act in a way that promotes tolerance among our various factions and preserves our unity. And, as Rabbi Yanklowitz argued, we cannot ignore humanitarian crises outside the Jewish world.

Prior to striking the Egyptian, Moshe looks about him—”here and there” and sees that “there was no person.” The obvious interpretation of his behavior is that he was checking for witnesses, to determine if anyone would see what he was about to do. But a number of mephorshim (commentators) suggest a different reason for his looking about. He was checking to see if someone else was present who would step up to right the injustice. And then, when he determined Mark Silver there was no such person, he rose to the task.

This interpretation reminds me of one of Hillel’s precepts in Pirkei Avot: In a place where there are no people, strive to be a person.

This is who we are at Beth El. We look around—here and there—to see what needs to be done and we step up to do it, whether it be within our Beth El family, for the broader Jewish Community, or beyond the Jewish world. May the difficult days we are experiencing soon pass, but may we never cease to step forward “L’tikkun Olam,” to make the world a better place.

Steven Cohen has agreed to oversee this effort and will be reaching out to various groups and individuals over the coming weeks and months to solicit volunteers.

Cemetery plots are only for sale to members in good standing.

Funerals may take place at Beth El Synagogue Center if the deceased is a member of Beth El and in good standing. There is a fee of $1,000. The following three funeral homes are the only approved funeral homes that can operate a funeral service at Beth El—Plaza Jewish Community Chapel (NYC), Riverside Memorial Chapel (Mt. Vernon), Weinstein Memorial Chapel (Yonkers).

A special request is being made to those that may have given thought over the years about reading the Haftarah, but have been reluctant because of a weaker knowledge of Hebrew or trope. Please reach out to Steven by email and let him know who you are—without any obligation.

February is Jewish Disability and Inclusion Awareness Month (“JDAIM”), a worldwide effort among Jewish organizations to raise awareness and foster inclusion of people with disabilities and those who love them.

JDAIM does not define “disability”; rather it celebrates Jewish community members of all abilities and promotes awareness of available communal resources to ensure inclusion of all members. JDAIM encourages every Jewish community to renew its efforts to ensure that its entire population is brought closer, that “keruv” is not only the name of a committee but that it is also a verb, that committee goals need to translate into actions. Religious services, teen socializing, adult education - no matter

KERUV* KORNER the activity, all community members should have the opportunity to be included to the best of their abilities.

With this in mind, the Keruv Committee is concerned about Beth El congregants who, for close to a year, have been unable to comfortably participate in Beth El’s online programs, services, meetings, and classes because they are not sufficiently knowledgeable about Zoom or Facebook livestream technology. Lack of technical skills can be an obstacle to inclusion in the Beth El virtual community that has arisen in this pandemic.

But it is not an insurmountable obstacle.

We, in fact, have communal resources to ensure inclusion of the tech-challenged, and those resources are YOU. We are

NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS Tu B’Shevat literally means the fifteenth day of the month of Shevat and usually falls in January or February. It may be winter for us, but it is the end of the rainy season in Israel and the time when sap has started rising in the trees. In the Nursery School we celebrate Tu B’Shevat as the “birthday of the trees.”

Our classrooms resounded with joyous songs about planting and trees. Tu B’Shevat gave us an opportunity to read a wide variety of appropriate children’s literature dealing with trees and nature.

We recorded the many functions of trees for both humankind and animals. We discussed the parts of the tree. This was especially exciting for the children when we spoke of the Hebrew names for the parts of a tree, since these words correspond to the names of our classes: Roots – Shoresh – 2’s classes Trunk – Gezah – 3’s classes Branches – Anaf – 4’s classes.

Blossoms – Tzameret – Kindergarten

Some children went outside and sketched the trees in our neighborhood, did bark rubbings, and measured the circumference of the trunks. This “wood related” holiday gave the children a chance to create unique wood sculptures.

Bird feeders were made in recognition of Shabbat Shira. In doing this activity the children made a conscious effort to feed the birds, teaching them both a human value and the Jewish value of kindness to animals. Children are never too young to learn the importance of caring for others.

Tu B’Shevat is an important holiday for today’s children. As our awareness of the environment becomes more essential to the future of the human race, Tu B’Shevat takes on more of a global importance. It is not just about spring, trees, and rebirth in Israel; it is about respecting, appreciating and taking care of nature.

Any activities we can do to foster these values transmit the true meaning of Tu B’Shevat to our children.

On January 13th, DOROT presented an excellent webinar on “Mastering Face Masks with Hearing Loss.” The presenters were from the Center for Hearing and Communication. The webinar was very practical and worthwhile. A few of our members attended on the Zoom.

The presenters, Carolyn Stern and Shelby Platia, presented many very practical suggestions for those who wear hearing aids.

Sisterhood Scene February this year brings many celebrations and other important events in the life of Sisterhood.

First, we will welcome world-renowned scholar Dr. Kenneth Pollack, from American Enterprise Institute, on Monday evening, February 8th. He will speak on the Middle East. The Israel Affairs Committee will co-sponsor this event with Sisterhood.

Our entire community will celebrate the holiday of Purim on Thursday evening, February 25th, and Friday, February 26th. Purim is a holiday of masks. We in our New Rochelle community are all too familiar with masks this year due to the pandemic. Yet Purim is a holiday of merriment and mystery. Choose your Purim mask

wisely and join the congregation for a celebration that includes reading the Megillah, giving gifts to the poor, feasting, and dressing up. Even if it is from home, get in the spirit. Put away your COVID masks and pull out the fun ones and make noise as we listen to the Megillah reading together. Try and make Hamantashen this year even if you have never made them before. Give them to a neighbor and make the holiday one of reaching out and using your masks to bring joy to others.

Remember, if Purim is coming, spring is not far behind and we will be able to get outside together again soon. Hag Purim Sameach to all.
