Meet Our Volunteer of the Month: Nathan Fisher

The Fisher Family, Vicki and I, plus our children Michele, Gabrielle (Gabby), and Avram (Avi), joined Beth El in 1975. Our children were enrolled at the Solomon Schechter School of Westchester and we all felt very comfortable with our new synagogue. We have made lots of life-long friends, participated in many activities, ruffled more than a few feathers when I got involved in the Alternate Service, and were richly rewarded with wonderful experiences and honors.

Some of my proudest Beth El moments include: • Working on the Religious School Board: helping enlist Jack Gruenberg, who I met in 1957 at a USY

Camp, to become the Hebrew School Principal.

• Rooting out sexist prayer books.

• Serving under and with Rocky Kramer and Elaine Levitin and many others to allow women to become

FULL participants of Beth El. • Helping Julie Rockowitz with Passover University.

Serving on the Board of Trustees.

Being selected, with Vicki, as a Gala Honoree.

Working on the Alternate Service (Shabbat and High Holiday services)'s Bikkur Cholim initiative.

Visiting homebound members with Eunice Kaplan under the auspices of Rabbi Sitkin.

Being part of the Weekday Morning Minyan, attending Shabbat Services, Jack Gruenberg’s classes.

Involvement with Men’s Club Shabbat and World-Wide Wrap.

Working with a group of dedicated and motivated members, led by Rabbi Schuck to re-energize and re-purpose Beth El’s mission.

Beth El has long been our spiritual home; and now that we can walk across North Avenue to attend services, activities, programs, etc., it is like our second home! I very much appreciate being selected as a “Volunteer of the Month.”

Did you know that Beth El members cook meals for those in need?

Meet the Project HOPE Committee, led by Barbara Engelson Begun in 1984, the HOPE Soup Kitchen has grown to become the largest emergency soup kitchen in the region. It’s been said that HOPE stands for “Help Our People Eat.” I first became involved with the HOPE Soup Kitchen a number of years ago when I helped set up and serve meals there on a weekly basis. These are some of my observations: First, the HOPE Soup Kitchen never served soup! They always served salad as the appetizer. Second, all comers receive a meal, with no advance sign-up or other requirements. As meal time approaches, people stream into the Soup Kitchen from all directions. The Soup Kitchen is a critical safety net for many in our community. Third, the meal is served in a dignified fashion. Volunteers carry plates of food on trays and place the meals “restaurant-style” before the clients sitting at long tables. Fourth, the number of clients that come for a meal swells toward the end of the month, because that is when some people run out of funds. In recent years, the HOPE Soup Kitchen has added a meal on the last two Mondays of the month in addition to the dinners which have always been served

on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Finally, the Soup Kitchen is a community. The meal sometimes begins with uplifting words by either the HOPE Executive Director or a member of the clergy.

A birthday might be mentioned or a personal achievement might be celebrated.

Beth El’s Project HOPE Committee prepares a meal on the second Tuesday of each month at 8:30 am in Beth El’s dairy kitchen.

Occasionally, the date is switched due to a holiday. It is best to check the Shabbat Announcements email for up-to-date information.

It truly takes a village (or as some say, it takes a shtetl) to make a meal with twenty-four pounds of pasta or fifty pounds of tuna.

Our current volunteers are Tom Cohen, Phyllis Feingold, Barbara Horowitz, Melanie Kogan, Susan Mandelbaum, Marla Mishler, Marcia Pryluck, Valerie Rudolph, Roni and Michael Schiffres, Candy Silver, and Joyce Wechsler.

Thank You to All who Participated in Our Sukkah Rental Program Thank you to the volunteers who helped build, take down, and transport our sukkahs to participants of Beth El's Sukkah Rental Program. Led by volunteer extraordinaire Alan S. Greenberg, our team included Adam Kerchner, Elliot Hollander, Hank Zupnick, and Lloyd Sherman. Our team was instrumental in the success of this rental program.

We extend a special thanks to Adam’s truck, which made all of this possible. We also thank those who supported this program by renting a sukkah.

The Beth El's Bridges to Civility Committee, in conjunction with the Beth El Israel Affairs Committee, is excited to announce the next workshop dedicated to enhancing civil discourse across the political spectrum within our community—Enhancing Quality of Dialogue about Israel, on Sunday, January 12th, from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm.

You are invited to enhance your communications skills on a range of issues relating to Israel. In his Yom Kippur sermon, Rabbi Schuck talked about our common love and profound need for the State of Israel. And yet, many in our community (and beyond) find discussions about specific issues challenging and sometimes polarizing.

Many of you participated in our successful first workshop in our series last April, which focused on the political divide in America.

Roasted Eggplant with Red Peppers Broil 2 eggplants until they charred and soft. About 5 minutes per side. Remove and place in a baking dish and allow to cool. Remove the skin of the eggplant and place the pulp in a food processor.

Add a red pepper (you can also add a green pepper), 1 clove of garlic, 1 sliced scallion, 2 tbsp. olive oil, 2 tbsp. tahini, ¼ cup lemon juice, ⅛ tsp. cayenne pepper, and ½ tsp. of salt. Pulse a few times until everything is mixed thoroughly. Enjoy!

RABBI’S MESSAGE I am adjusting my life to my aveilut, and this, like all things, will be a process. In an effort to fulfill my obligations of aveilut, I will avoid celebrations throughout the year. I will, of course, continue to officiate at lifecycle events, which is a great privilege in my life.

But I will not attend parties after a wedding, bar mitzvah, bris, etc.

If you have any questions, please do not be shy about asking.

I am grateful for the incredible professional and lay leadership of our shul. They have been exceptionally supportive of me and my family during this time. Words do not adequately capture the depth of my appreciation for the way that they cared for me and allowed me to take the time that I needed to mourn. I feel incredibly blessed to work with each one of them.

Grief has its own way of pulling us along a path that we neither choose nor desire. We can’t quite predict the way loss will change us, but it always does. For me, in this moment, the pain of my loss is raw and I have no choice but to allow it to take shape however it will. As I have taught so many others, I will do my best to trust that my grief has something to teach me, even if the journey is circuitous and right now, strewn with sorrow.

On behalf of my entire family, thank you for your many consolations. They have been a great comfort to me in this difficult time.

Dear Friends, I have been overwhelmed by your warmth and kindness during these past few weeks. My father’s death was unexpected, and though he was ill for a long time, there was no reason for us to think that his death was imminent.

I have felt completely held by our Beth Rabbi David Schuck El community during this time of mourning.

My grief is sharp, and the loss is profound. Your shiva visits and notes have been a source of great comfort to me. In the spirit of hakarat hatov, or expressing my gratitude, I want you to know that you have made a difference in the way that I have felt enveloped in a giant hug by our synagogue community. I don’t take that for granted at all.

It can be complicated when a rabbi grieves because during shiva, the tables turn and congregants are thrust into the role of consoler and the rabbi in the role of mourner. That switch can be unexpectedly difficult for both sides. Thank you for your understanding and patience during these past few weeks and for allowing me to grieve in the way that felt necessary.

I am learning so many things by being on the other side of this equation, lessons that will make me a better friend and a more effective rabbi. But now is not the time for me to process these lessons, as I am still in the thick of my grief.

As you know, the period of mourning for a parent is one year.

Our Study in Jewish Literature Continues The Winter Semester begins in January 2020. Ten sessions are planned, including a review of how Shakespeare used his knowledge of the Bible in several of his plays, a study of several Hasidic tales, and a reading of two Jewish-themed novels written by American Jewish authors. We meet from 10:00 am – 12:15 pm, on Monday mornings, in the Board Room. Classes will be held from January 13th to March 30th, with no classes on January 20th and February 17th. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE So often in the past our leadership has said “If only we knew who has an interest or a skill in …” Now, we hope to know.

The second initiative we launched was to offer members a credit for a portion of their dues for referring new members. Very few of our members took advantage of this opportunity; nevertheless, referrals remain essential to Beth El in attracting new members.

In the coming months, please continue to keep your eyes open for potential new members—a young family that moves in down the block, recent retirees that move into the neighborhood, a friend or relative (or their children) looking to move from the city to the suburbs. Recommendations from others is how so many of us— including my family—came to Beth El. Please feel free to reach out to potential members directly or, alternatively, if you call them to our attention, the shul will be sure to add them to our distribution lists and be in touch with them.

You will be receiving this issue of The Bulletin, give or take a week, when the parasha—the weekly Torah portion—is Vayetzei.

This parasha begins with Jacob’s famous dream of a ladder reaching to heaven. When he awakes, he names the place “Beth El” and he takes the stone he had used as a pillow and makes it a “pillar” (sound familiar?) to mark the spot. Stay tuned for more on this theme in a future month’s article. For now, looking ahead a few weeks, I wish you and yours a Happy Hanukkah!

I want to take this opportunity to thank those of you who, on or after Yom Kippur, expressed your support for my words during Kol Nidre. And I thank those who contributed so generously to the Kol Nidre Appeal. We had many first-time contributors this year and many of our long-time supporters substantially increased their gifts.

I see these—your kind words and your generous donations—as an affirmation of the Kol Nidre message: Beth El matters. Beth El matters because it enriches people’s lives. We are committed to Beth El’s future so that it can continue to enrich our lives and the lives of those who have not yet become a part of our community.

But the High Holidays were just the start. Building on the work of previous Beth El leadership, your current Officers and Board of Trustees are committed to, and busily engaged in, turning our vision for Beth El’s vibrant future into action. And, as the year progresses, we will be calling on the skill, experience, talents, energy, and good will of you, our members, to join us in our endeavors.

At this time, I would like to highlight two initiatives of substantial value to both the synagogue and our members that were introduced earlier this year but took off with slow starts. Now, postholidays, we return to them with renewed vigor.

The first initiative pertains to our online synagogue information system, ShulCloud. We recently expanded ShulCloud to include congregant interests and skills. This expansion, which may seem insignificant, is critical for implementing our strategic initiatives.

Information about our congregants’ interests is necessary for creating Special Interest Groups, sub-communities or affinity groups that will help us with our first “Pillar”—activating a community of connected communities. Knowing congregants’ skills will help increase participation and voluntarism, thus promoting another “Pillar”—pivoting to a culture of co-creation and co-ownership.

For the charitably inclined, there are strategic ways of giving that can help the giver and the receiver. Contributing to charitable causes before the end of the year is still one of the most popular tax-reduction strategies for people who itemize deductions.

Tax laws currently in effect raise the income tax rate for highincome earners, making charitable deductions a more attractive option.

It’s a direct transfer of funds from your IRA custodian and payable to Beth El Synagogue Center, which counts toward your RMD for the year, up to $100,000. It’s not included in your gross income and does not count against the limits on deductions for charitable contributions.

OPEN BEIT MIDRASH: DECEMBER Each week (on alternating Tuesdays and Thursdays), Open Beit Midrash attendees will study Jewish texts—ranging from Chassidic thought to Jewish law. Each week, learn from two Rabbis and you can choose the topic you would like to study for the evening. Instructors include Beth El’s Rabbi David Schuck and Rabbi Zach Sitkin as well as Rabbi Ethan Linden, the executive director of Ramah Berkshires, and Beth El’s rabbinic fellows. In addition to the weekly classes, scholars from around the NY area will teach once a month on topics related to their respective fields—from prayer and ethics to contemporary Jewish issues.

We begin at 7:30 p.m. with drinks and food followed by learning promptly at 8:00 p.m.

OPEN BEIT MIDRASH: SCHOLAR VISIT What it Takes to Pray: Mindfulness, Meditation and Jewish Practice

Thursday, December 19 | 7:30 p.m.

Rabbi Jonathan Slater co-directs the Clergy Leadership Program, teaches on multiple programs and retreats, and works closely with the Board of Directors. He was ordained by JTS and served congregations in northern California for over twenty years. He was also a participant in the first IJS rabbinic cohort. Jonathan enjoys living in the NYC suburbs, teaching meditation at the JCC in Manhattan, and visiting with his seven grandchildren around the country.

have. As we self-identified areas for improvement, we were gratified to have Jeri commend our group as “knowledgeable and resourceful.”

Nonetheless, two areas stood out as needing work. First, was the need to have greater involvement and leadership from congregants who have the very impairments that can act as impediments. “If I am not for myself, who will be?”

(Hillel again) Judy Schmeidler is a wonderful role model. She has been an invaluable resource, giving voice to the needs of individuals with limited sight. If you have hesitated to volunteer because of limitations you have or accommodations you require, please contact us. We need your input and invite your leadership! Please let us know your strengths, interests, and how we can facilitate your participation.

Second, the most glaring need highlighted in our meeting last month was how poorly we communicate with the outside world. We are apparently in the vanguard of accessible and inclusive congregations, but one would never know it by looking at our website and publicity. This is not just about window dressing or being self-congratulatory. If we do not let people outside of Beth El know in all of our publicity and on our homepage that we are inclusive and accommodating, then we might as well not be. Those in the larger community looking for a safe and welcoming haven are unlikely to venture here. We are actively working on updating our website and communications to better reflect our openness. After all, the mitzvah (obligation) is to shine our light, Hanukkah or otherwise, publicly, out into the wider world.

The schools of Hillel and Shamai famously differed on how the Hanukkah lights are to be kindled. Shamai taught that we start on day one with eight candles (plus the shamash, helper candle) and reduce it by one candle each day that passes. Hillel, whom we follow until this day, instead has us start with one candle and add another each day so that by the eighth day we have the full eight candles plus the shamash burning brightly. We should be ever increasing the light we shine into the world.

In light of this teaching (pun intended), we appreciate the beauty and warmth of what we have achieved thus far towards welcoming diversity in our community and making our facility and programming accessible. However, we must expand the light we shine, penetrating the shadows wherever they still lurk. Toward that end, last month Beth El had a threehour needs assessment with the consultant Jeri Mendelsohn, LCSW, funded by a UJA Inclusion Grant.

Erica Leventhal, Bekkah Gold, Debbie Young, Alyssa Sherman, Alan Kellman, Naomi Adler, Nina Luban, Judy Schmeidler, Beth Fisch Cohen, and Elise Richman sat down with Jeri to go point by point over an organized checklist generated by the Ruderman Foundation. (Rabbi Schuck was unable to attend but will be updated.) She was very impressed with Beth El’s warmth and accessibility from the time she drove up and noticed the clearly marked handicapped parking, entered the large welcoming and accessible entrance, and noticed in her tour of the building details large and small that were intentionally designed to accommodate the various needs that members of our community might

Sisterhood Scene December is upon us, and it is a month that brings more lively Sisterhood programs and some important suggestions for how to make your family Hanukkah a more meaningful one.

1. Join us on Sunday, December 15th, from 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm, to experience, taste, and enjoy a traditional Afghani meal made by you and Mahnaz Ghafoor. Mahnaz is the wife and mother of the Afghani family we are helping to resettle in the United States. Mahnaz, being an excellent cook, has set up a cooking/catering business. According to Maimonides, the medieval philosopher, encouraging and training someone to have her own trade is the highest form of charity since then she can support herself. The cost is $45 and we can only accept 15 people, so sign up soon.

2. Join us on Monday, December 16th for a fun Hanukkah sing-a-long, co-sponsored by Westchester Hadassah. Lori Weber will be our leader and entertainer. Join us as we get into the joy of the Hanukkah holiday.

3. Need some ideas for a great Hanukkah holiday this year? Try the following: Make one night a tzedakah night, where the cost of the gifts is given to a charity chosen by the children; make one night a book night; one night a handmade present night; one night a pajama night with crazy PJs. It need not be a holiday of just gifts.

NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS Loose parts are materials that can be moved all around the room and used in endless ways.

The versatility of these materials provides children with virtually endless ways to create.

Access to a variety of transient materials during play and exploration aids in problem solving, engineering, creativity, concentration, hand-eye coordination, scientific thinking and the list goes on and on. One of the most important aspects of loose parts engagement is the fact that no glue is used. Thus creations can be reconfigured and re-imagined each day. Each child will use the same material in a different way. A stick to one child might be a flag pole added onto their construction site, but to another it might be used to stir a pot.

The beauty lies in allowing the children the freedom to explore the materials, use them as they wish (as long as they are being safe), and take them to any area of the classroom they feel the need to.

Sometimes in the course of a day, children will ask for something that isn’t available in the classroom to enhance their play. Our answer to them is, “Let’s take a walk to the Possibilities Place and see if we can find what is needed.” In this organized space, there are a variety of

recyclables and re-purposed items including bottle caps, pine cones, pom poms, art supplies, scissors, gems, cardboard, fabric, shells and more. Due to our relationship with an organization call Teaching Beyond the Square, the children had an opportunity to go “shopping” in a movable possibilities place known as the “Materials Truck.”

This 33-foot-long truck pulled into the Beth El parking lot and the fun began! The truck is organized with a variety of very interesting materials that the children were able to explore and select. When we came back to the classroom, all the children’s items were placed on a large piece of green felt on the floor. As they gathered around the materials, the children were led in a discussion about noticing, categorizing, and organizing the materials. This conversation is always grounded in an awareness of the environmental importance of reusing and re-purposing single use items and how it impacts our environment. During indoor exploration the children used their selections to build, make stories, and organize into piles according to size, shape and color. Loose Parts exploration continues to be one of the most popular activities in each of our classrooms.

A Note from the Beth El USY Teen Leadership Board…

December Teen Highlights

This past weekend, over 200 teens from the METNY Region (metropolitan New York area) gathered together at Orangetown Jewish Center, in Rockland County, to participate in the Regional Fall Kinnus. The weekend was filled with engaging discussions, fun programming, and, of course, making new friends. We enjoyed the melting pot of kids coming from Long Island, the five boroughs, and Westchester, Rockland, and Orange Counties, in 9th-12th grades. On Friday night, we all took part in a fun ice-breaker, a meaningful Kabbalat Shabbat service led by teens, a vibrant ruach session (a time to sing Jewish songs), and a thought-provoking sicha (conversation). On Saturday, we had teen-led services with creative Shacharit options, ranging from South American Shacharit to Improv Shacharit. We then enjoyed some free time, where we got to form strong bonds with people throughout all grades. We capped off Saturday with a fun dance where we all got a chance to get freaky on the dance floor. Sunday focused on a program where we learned about pollution and were encouraged to get involved. We then crafted pillows for all of us to take home before heading home. The weekend was very fun and consisted of great learning opportunities. Every teen attending is looking forward to the next regional event and we hope to see new faces. We love hosting here at Beth El as well, and look forward to having another opportunity to do so!

This month, we’re excited for both Kadima (for 6th and 7th graders) and USY (for 8th-12th graders) Shabbat Dinners. And, we welcome our 8th graders into USY at our Friday, December 13th Shabbat program! There are also family programming opportunities, like Treats and Torah after shul on December 14th, and the Family Social Action program on December 15th. It’s a short month with Winter Break, so don’t miss Hanukkah Hoopla on December 25th to celebrate Hanukkah with Beth El! Do you want more information about Beth El USY? Beginning in September and ending in June, we have a new dismissal procedure for Thursday evenings after Religious School, happening between 5:40 pm and 6:10 pm every Thursday that Religious School is in session. Cars will enter the parking lot through the entrance closer to North Avenue (in the exit lane) on Northfield Road, looping through the parking lot and snaking up to the front entrance, picking up children at the red doors by the Office of Youth and Family Engagement. Families are given color-coded cards for each of their children with their name and class listed. Parents or caregivers will hand one card to a professional who will send someone to go get your child and your child will hand you back your card when they enter the car. For those who would like to park, please use the second entrance on Northfield Road, further from North Avenue. Bekkah Gold will be stationed outside so that the path to the second and third parking are accessible to anyone trying to enter or exit the building. If you plan on entering or exiting the property during this window, please park in the second and third parking lots. All November Religious School dates are listed for your convenience. We look forward to a smoother process and maintain that the safety of our children is our top priority.
