The Memory Minyan is based on the idea of the “Memory Café,” which is a meeting place where people with mild to mid-stage dementia and their caregivers can “go out on the town” among others sharing their experience, free from the risk of embarrassment and the bewildering crush of most public places. Around the world, Memory Cafés bring a sense of normalcy and social connection to thousands of families affected by dementia. Now we are bringing the concept to our Jewish gathering place, creating a navigable, warm prayer and social experience. There is no charge for this event.

IN A GIVING MOOD? SUGGESTIONS FOR GIVING TO BETH EL INSTEAD OF THE IRS! As the year end approaches, many people look for ways of combining their desire to do good with their desire to save on taxes. For the charitably inclined, there are strategic ways of giving that can help the giver and the receiver. Contributing to charitable causes before the end of the year is one of the most popular tax-reduction strategies for people who itemize deductions.

Tax laws currently in effect raise the income tax rate for highincome earners, making charitable deductions a more attractive option.

Generally, if you itemize your deductions, making charitable contributions can decrease your tax bill, and the higher tax rates for high-income earners add an increased tax benefit for charitable contributions.

In the giving mood? Here is a strategy to consider that can help you make the most of your giving this year.

Despite recent market gyrations, it’s likely your portfolio is filled with stocks that have appreciated over the past few years. Investors who give appreciated stock to charity avoid the capital gains tax on appreciation and can deduct the stock’s full market value at the time of the gift.

Most publicly traded securities with unrealized long-term gains (meaning they were purchased over a year ago and have increased in value) may be donated to a public charity, and the donor can claim the fair market value as an itemized deduction on his or her federal tax return—up to 30 percent of the donor’s adjusted gross income. No capital gains taxes are owed because the securities are donated, not sold. The greater the appreciation, the bigger the tax savings will be.

But this will not be enough, and the truth is, we already know that.

The American Conservative synagogue must be re-imagined if it is going to survive and thrive, and I am so proud that our community is courageous enough to be transparent about the data and respond to these trends with the conviction that we can transform our challenges into opportunities.

I am grateful that the leadership of our synagogue is willing to allocate resources, energy, and time to this process.

I am grateful to work with a staff that is ready to wholeheartedly manage and participate in this process, in addition to everything else that they already do.

I am blessed to lead a community of people who are willing to do the hard work of opening our hearts and minds to what will emerge in this process.

Business as usual is not working in American synagogues. It takes bold and spirited people to meet these challenges with the faith that, throughout history, successful Jewish communities were able to find ways to adapt to what was happening around them without losing their core values. Thank you for your willingness to be bold.

Dear Friends, Journey, our visioning and strategic planning process, is under way. The planning team has been hard at work since August and Insyte facilitated a full day staff retreat for our senior team, as well as a three hour meeting with our Board of Directors.

However, I am not writing this message to simply update you on the process and remind you of the various ways to get involved.

There will be plenty of communication around that. I am writing to tell you how proud I am to be your rabbi.

The American Jewish landscape is shifting very quickly, as new trends in our community pose significant challenges to synagogues, and ours is no exception. Yet most of my colleagues and their lay leaders are stuck, uncertain of how to address these challenges thoughtfully and strategically with an eye toward building

Contributions of stock or other property are deductible for 2017 as long as the gifts are completed by Friday, December 29th. For donations made with checks, you may count checks as deductions for 2017 as long as the payments are put in mailboxes in sufficient time for letters to be postmarked by midnight Friday, December 29th. Credit card payments for charitable donations qualify for 2017 deductions as soon as you authorize the charge. This holds true even if the credit card companies don’t bill you until 2018.

Finally, if you want to donate to charity and you’re 70½ or older, you may want to look into a qualified charitable distribution (QCD). It’s a direct transfer of funds from your IRA custodian and payable to Beth El Synagogue Center, which counts toward your RMD for the year, up to $100,000. It’s not included in your gross income and does not count against the limits on deductions for charitable contributions.

Please note that under proposed tax-reform legislation being debated by Congress, charitable contributions may no longer provide the tax benefits that contributions currently provide. Some tax analysts estimate that under the proposed new tax-reform legislation, itemized deductions (including charitable deductions) will only benefit 5% of taxpayers. Therefore 95% of taxpayers would utilize the expanded Standard deduction, which does not allow for charitable deductions.

So, maximize your charitable contribution deductions and related tax benefits by the end of 2017, because it could be going away next year.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, religious pluralism, Ultra-Orthodox control of religion in Israel, and other divisive issues, particularly as we try to engage our teens and millennials and foster deep connections to Israel in the next generation.

The Keruv Committee program I first Mark Seidenfeld mentioned above was notable for bringing us together and staying true to the Committee’s mission to create a more inclusive community where people not only of different abilities and paths in life, but of different perspectives on issues, can come together to learn from each other through their shared love of Judaism and Israel. The Keruv program was also notable for the civility of the dialogue around a difficult topic, proving that we can and must maintain derech eretz (courtesy and kindness) even when emotions may run high around sensitive issues. It pains me so deeply to hear many rabbis acknowledge their hesitation to talk about the challenges facing Israel because it so often incites divisions within their communities and elicits vilifying comments against them from members who may disagree with them. We can’t let this be the character of our discussions about Israel and we must strive to bring the mission of inclusivity and mutual respect of our Keruv Committee to the many issues confronting the Jewish community.

Particularly as it relates to Israel, we may have members with diverse perspectives on the challenges it faces. But in the spirit of the Open Beit Midrash we just launched and the core Jewish value of learning, if we engage these topics with open minds and understanding, mutual respect, and compassion, we can learn from each other—not necessarily agree with each other, but respect our differences and conduct our dialogue with kindness. We must remember that our diverse opinions emanate from a common bond of love for Israel and the desire to see it thrive and remain meaningful and at the core of Jewish identity for generations to come.

As we approach the holiday of Hanukkah, I hope the light of the candles sparks more bright spots of Ahavat Yisrael, love of Israel, in our own community and throughout the world.

This past month our Keruv Committee kicked off a three-part series, “What Keeps Your Rabbi Up At Night?” with Rabbi Schuck.

The first installment was about “Israel and the Diaspora.” It was a fascinating and emotional look at the current state of relations and perspectives between Israeli and American Jews. It’s a difficult topic, especially when you delve into the statistics about engagement and awareness among Americans, particularly young Americans, in terms of their connection (or lack thereof) to Israel, as well as the Israeli view of the relevance of the American Jewish community to the daily lives of Israeli Jews, again particularly among young Israelis. These are complex issues that understandably “keep our Rabbi up at night,” as I’m sure it does so many of us as we seek to continue to learn about and share our love of Israel, particularly with our children and the next generation, while honestly confronting realities that make Israel a hot topic, and as we read and watch the news and see what goes on at college campuses across the country. We are fortunate to have many bright spots in our community reflecting a deep love and connection to Israel—from our active USY chapter to our Israel Affairs Committee that work hard to forge meaningful experiences and informative programs to help Beth El members and the wider community—young and old—learn about Israel.

Many of our youth choose to travel to Israel on numerous programs—summer trips through USY, BBYO, Ramah, and others, semesters of study abroad during high school and college, and even gap years between high school and college. And, perhaps in the bravest of all commitments to Israel, we have seen some of our youth volunteer to serve in the IDF as Lone Soldiers, and seen other members make Aliyah to call Israel their home. Earlier this year, we hosted our first ever S.E.E Israel Program to Support, Educate about and Engage our community in Israel.

As I write this, we have just wrapped up our first Israeli Art Festival. Working with the Safrai Gallery in Jerusalem, over 1,000 works of art from Israeli artists were exhibited and available for sale over five days at Beth El. The show brought in people from all over the metropolitan area to enjoy the amazing diversity of art, as well as wonderful programs with wine, food, and music.

But all these bright spots do not eliminate the larger reality of the challenges that we face as supporters and lovers of Israel when dealing with issues surrounding Israel-Diaspora relations,

How can we pay better attention to living our lives with intention? Make time for yourself at our Contemplative Service, which is designed to slow the pace of our lives in order to listen to what emerges from the silence. We will set aside time for mindfulness meditation, contemplative study, singing, and prayer, and focus our attention on opening our hearts and minds. Everyone is welcome; dress as you would like, and bring an open mind! Please arrive a few minutes early to minimize interruptions. Join Rabbi Molly Karp on Wednesday mornings for Philo and Josephus: Living Jewish in a Non-Jewish World Just as we do, many ancient Jews struggled to live Jewishly in a non-Jewish world.

This course will explore two important voices of the 1st CE. Philo of Alexandria was a Hellenistic Jewish philosopher who lived from 20 BCE–50 CE in Alexandria. We will also examine the work of Josephus, a Jewish aristocrat born into a priestly family who also lived in the 1st century, and who led the Jewish forces against Rome in Galilee. Since Jewish prayer assumes a certain amount of background exposure and knowledge, this service is intended to create an access point into prayer for those who may feel lost and/or alienated from our typical prayer services. The Learners’ Service is an introductory exploration of the prayer service. Each prayer will be studied in depth and read in English to gain a basic understanding of its meaning and intent.

We will discuss the basic physical mechanics of each prayer when necessary. It is our hope that over time, everyone in our community will be able to enter the sanctuary with confidence and feel at home.

Riverdale Art Association in Museum, December 2nd The Riverdale Art Association will return with another group exhibition in our Kanner-Kurzon Museum from Saturday, December 2nd, through Sunday, January 7, 2018.

They previously exhibited here about one and a half years ago. The group was formed in the Bronx in 1999 with a small group of artists. It has now grown to about forty members who work in many different media. They meet monthly to critique the work done by various members, and they invite guest artists to discuss various techniques in painting, drawing, sculpting, and photography. They also inform the members about exhibits on display in various accessible venues and then discuss those exhibits. To learn more, visit www.riverdaleartassociation.org.

As the days grow short, we approach the holiday of lights. Hanukkah commemorates a small band of Jews who refused to assimilate into the then dominant Greek culture. They ultimately succeeded in rededicating their generation to Jewish values and practices. The holiday resonates to this day as a celebration of positive Jewish identity. Yet the same Talmud that establishes the observance of Hanukkah is infused with Greek influence in language, culture, and philosophy. The tension

between assimilating the best aspects of our surroundings yet sustaining our distinct identity and traditions pervades all of Jewish history back to the time of Joseph in Egypt.

Joseph was the first of our forefathers to intermarry and he gave his two sons Egyptian names. To this day we bless our sons that they should be like Ephraim and Manasseh, the sons of an Egyptian mother.

Over the centuries the definition of who is Jewish has shifted, but the emphasis on retaining our identity, maintaining a meaningful connection with fellow Jews, and transmitting that identity and connection to the next generation is more pressing than ever. In our day, the definition of who is Jewish and what constitutes a Jewish family is again becoming more fluid. The question of who defines, and how, is hotly contested as different branches of our people travel divergent paths. Outside of Israel, more and more identifying and/or observant Jews are intermarrying. This is in part due to our small numbers as well as our ready acceptance into American society. As a result, addressing intermarriage has become deeply personal and emotional for many of us.

Share your story or learn from others.All are welcome.

Conservative Judaism and its leadership are grappling with this reality and how best to address intermarriage and Jewish identity. It’s another one of those issues that keeps our rabbi,and many of us, up at night. Last month, Rabbi Schuck led a riveting discussion about “Israel and the Diaspora” in our series “Hot Topics in Conservative Judaism—What keeps your rabbi up at night.” He shared data and candidly explored the challenges we face in nurturing our relationship with Israel.

The forty or so people in attendance were passionately, but respectfully, engaged in how best to overcome the dilemmas. On Sunday evening, January 7th, 7:00 pm, Rabbi Schuck will talk about our movement’s approach to “Intermarriage and Jewish Identity.” The choices made by the Rabbinic Assembly and by individual rabbis will have ramifications for each of us personally as well as for the future of our movement and the Jewish people as a whole. You will want to be part of this discussion, so mark your calendar now for the first Sunday in 2018.

Sisterhood Scene I recently attended several meetings and classes and found that throughout the sessions I heard one theme repeated over and over— We must respect each other. We must respect the words and thoughts of our friends and neighbors. We cannot allow emotions, egos, and disagreements of ideas and philosophies to break down the friendships we have formed over the years. We must try to understand where the other person is coming from and listen carefully to what they are saying. This is not always easy to do, especially if the feelings are strong on both sides of an argument. We must remember to listen. Do not jump in and interrupt because you think your idea is different and/or better.

Everyone with an opinion should be given an opportunity to add to a discussion by voicing their thoughts and by being respected for what they are bringing to the group.

The words—RESPECT and LISTEN— came up many times in the discussions that took place at the Board of Trustees meeting.

They came up in Rabbi Schuck’s talk on Israel and the Diaspora. The word “Respect” was the title of a recent e-mail from Agnes Emert, WLCJ Vice President. She wrote to Sisterhood Presidents and talked about respect within Sisterhoods, the work place and family. She also said, “Without respect for each other and ourselves, she could not have endured the ebb and flow of her life.”

In Sisterhood, we are working hard to respect the wants, needs and ideas of

all our members. Whether you are older or younger, a new member or a long time member we welcome you, your ideas, and your participation. Please join us on December 11th, 12:30 pm , for our Hadassah/Sisterhood Hanukkah Sing Along. Get into the holiday mood with some beautiful singing, led by our own Lori Weber.

As we enter December, one of the cold, dark months of the year, please remember that we try to make sure there is always light, warmth, friendship, and respect in our Sisterhood. NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS: OUTDOOR PLAYSPACE climbing experiences. Natural logs and branches supplement outdoor blocks in the Construction Area, where a new structure is created each day.

One of the most popular areas of exploration and great interest to the children is the space with hills, ropes, and slides. It is here that our students challenge themselves repeatedly by attempting to navigate the steep inclines. They find creative ways of using their bodies to get to the top, and continue to encourage each other with shouts of, “You can do it! You’re almost there!” It is with great pride that we observe our children exhibiting patience, persistence, and problem solving through trial and error.

The various components of our Outdoor Playspace bring new ways of exploring and experiencing the world of nature and the outdoors. They offer opportunities for building strength, coordination and balance. We have reapplied for an additional grant to continue expanding this area with hopes of adding a mud kitchen, garden space, and digging area. Be sure to check out our Playspace when you have some time, preferably when there are children there.

Last year, the Nursery School successfully applied for a grant from the Jewish Education Project. That funding, together with supplemental funds from the Nursery School Board, enabled us to begin the creation of a fabulous Outdoor Play Space.

One of the tenets of our Reggio philosophy is the belief that, along with adults and other children, the environment serves as the third teacher. Our Outdoor Playspace, located on the large field below the parking lots, illustrates this belief in a most tangible manner. Its offerings of activities and areas of exploration spark creativity, team work, and gross motor options to challenge and engage children’s imagination.

Unlike our conventional playgrounds, this stretch of land has beautiful sprawling grass which allows for unhampered running and jumping. It offers hills in various degrees of incline for climbing and scaling. There is a Music Wall with an array of pots—pans that children can explore with large metal utensils. Our Magnet Wall has magnetic tubes and ramps where children investigate pathways and ideas of cause and effect. A long balance beam zigzags in one area, while massive tires and a tire tower are set up for challenging

A Word from Jen

I have been tremendously fortunate to attend quite a few conferences, seminars and trainings over the course of my years as a Jewish professional. This year, I’m a fellow in the Ruskay Institute through UJA, and in November, I went on our first of two retreats.

It was the most meaningful, enriching, fulfilling learning and community building opportunity that I have been a part of. Run

by Rockwood Leadership, the retreat had us exploring our life purpose and vision and how that affects our personal and professional lives. The facilitators created a safe space which encouraged sharing and vulnerability.

Participating in this unique experience made me think about the spaces we build here at Beth El, for youth and for adults. How do we inspire that kind of community in our own setting? What questions do we ask, what opportunities do we offer, what expectations do we develop? I don’t have the answers to all of this yet, but I am excited to think in this way. If you want to think in this way with me, I would love for you to reach out, to get coffee, to swing by and say hello, and to brainstorm together. Please reach out!

Religious School Update

We have enjoyed having Ofek Harel, one of the Westchester Shinshinim, with our Religious School learners on Thursdays. A “Shinshin” is an 18-year-old Israeli emissary sent by the Israeli Government and the Jewish Agency for Israel to communities abroad with the goal of educating people of all ages about Israel and Israeli culture. The Westchester community shinshinim serve seven synagogue Religious Schools, Schechter Westchester, Carmel Academy, and Westchester Hillels.

Ofek has brought interesting discussions, games, and activities to our first through seventh grade learners. They are building unique relationships with him.
