RABBI’S MESSAGE We begin the Passover seder with some of the most memorable words in the Haggadah: This is the bread of affliction which our ancestors ate in the Land of Egypt. Let all who are hungry come and eat.

We generally read this as an expression of our freedom. Sharing bread is the act of a free person. A slave eats whatever scraps of bread he can find.

Abudraham (14th Century Spain) describes a custom in which people begin their Passover seder by setting their tables, opening their doors, and yelling: “All who are hungry come and eat!!” The poor among their neighbors would join them for the seder. Impoverished Gentile and Jewish neighbors alike would join families for the Passover meal. This opening phrase was not an abstract principle urging care for the vulnerable. It was a lived value, home by home, neighborhood by neighborhood.

Free people share food. Passover was a time in which we opened our homes to our neighbors in order to share our food, our tables, and the warmth of our families with anyone in need. If our freedom is triggered by the opening of our homes to others, then this year’s Passover will be a relapse of sorts, a return to that constricted place we call Mitzrayim (Egypt). Our doors will remain shut, not only to the hungry and marginalized, but to each and every person who does not live behind them.

Passover in 5780: This is the bread of affliction which we eat in the Land of Egypt. We hope that all who are hungry find a way to eat.

We are tripping over ourselves to try to make this night like every other Passover night. Maybe if we set up Zoom before the holiday starts … Maybe we can create a Google hangout and…. Maybe we can ask our seder regulars to write something on a shared Google doc….

But let’s take a collective deep breath here. This year’s Passover won’t be like any Passover we have ever experienced, and that’s okay. It shouldn’t be. There will be less warmth in our homes. We will long for people. The seder will be shorter. Our favorite Passover dishes brought by family and friends will be missing. And all of that’s okay, because this year, we are back in Mitzrayim (Egypt), a place of constriction, a narrowing of the expansiveness of life. We must give ourselves permission to experience life as it is, even if it hurts. It won’t be like this forever, but right now, this is where we are.

Like the very first Passover, we will be huddled in our homes, frightened about the plague outside, hoping it will pass over (Passover?) our homes and the homes of loved ones. We will pray that one day soon, the dove won’t return, signaling that we should take those first steps out of our arks and back into Freedom. But until then, it is futile to pretend that we aren’t in Mitzrayim. Zoom will not lead us back to the Promised Land. Right now, we have to make do with patience, faith, love, and the angels who work to heal us in hospitals across our country each and every day. That has to be enough. Dayenu.

At the end of the Abudraham’s comment about the custom of opening our homes to the poor, he writes something absolutely magnificent in its tenderness and emotional intelligence.

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT INFORMATION DURING THE COVID-19 VIRUS We continue to work hard to address the material and spiritual needs of our community during this challenging time and to communicate consistently and transparently. We hope that you are taking advantage of our virtual offerings which are meant to reduce the feeling of isolation and to stimulate our intellectual, emotional, and spiritual needs.

We want to share some of the policies that we must adopt to support the public health approach to reducing the surge of Coronavirus within our community. These instructions reflect the guidance of the Department of Health. The rabbis of Southern Westchester are consistently applying the following religious policies during this time: • Funerals will be limited to graveside services and will be restricted to a small number of family members and a minyan.

• Shiva visits should be replaced by phone calls and/or video conferencing.

• There will be no public celebrations of s’machot.

• While communal Shabbat meals are an important part of our

community, at this time people should not have gatherings for Shabbat meals.

• While school is canceled, tutoring services may be solicited by congregants, and should be done remotely.

• Contact with others should be limited. Children should only have play dates remotely.

We realize that the above restrictions may increase the experience of social isolation. Please let us know immediately if you begin to feel overwhelmed by loneliness or if the isolation leads to feeling depressed. We are working with mental health professionals who can provide a plan for treatment and support for anyone who needs. We do not valorize “toughing it out.” We also have a large network of volunteers who are happy to call and video chat in order to sustain a personal connection for all who need it throughout this situation.

Rabbi Schuck, Erica Leventhal, and Mark Silver are in regular contact with the Department of Health and can help you navigate your own situation with the Department of Health should that be necessary. Please utilize our hotline bethelcares@bethelnr.org.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Beth El Family, Some months obvious themes present themselves for my Bulletin article. Other months, it is less so. Sadly, this month, I have little choice about what to address. Our lives have become dominated by the COVID-19 outbreak and its unprecedented consequences.

I do not want to use this space to give you a summary of the situation, or Beth El’s response to it, because events are changing so rapidly that anything I write now could be out-of-date by the time these words are in print. And, as you know, we have been using regular electronic communication to keep you posted in a timely manner as the situation unfolds.

I was tempted to thank a number of individuals who have stepped up in big ways for Beth El and the community at this time, but then I realized that so many of you have stepped up in so many different but equally valuable ways since the outbreak began that singling out individuals—however deserving they are—would be inappropriate. So please accept this thank you to you all for your efforts, your caring, your patience and perseverance, your support, and your courage at this difficult time. I appreciate so much our clergy team, our professional and support staff, our maintenance crew, our teachers, our lay leaders, and our congregants.

These are difficult times, but we will get through them together as a community. Indeed, a hallmark of Beth El has always been how it functions as a community—a caring community where we enrich one another’s lives through our associations with each other and with the shul. Never has this been more true than now. Members of the Board of Trustees and other volunteers called, emailed, or texted every Beth El member to reach out and keep people connected, to compile a list of congregant needs to be met, and to solicit further

volunteers to help meet those needs. This information was fed into an information system that then enabled us to assign volunteers to tasks in support of congregants. These efforts are ongoing. If you would like to volunteer or if you are in need at this time, please email bethelcares@bethelnr.org. You can also inform us of your needs by calling the synagogue at 914-235-2700, and pressing 9.

Much has been said in the media and in our own internal discussions about how the measures we take to protect our health cause us to be and feel isolated at a time when we are so desperately in need of feeling connected and supported. We have therefore replaced the term “social distancing” with “physical distancing,” recognizing that we need to be connected socially and interpersonally even as we need to separate physically. Much of our effort at this time is being directed toward responding to these non-physical needs, ramping up our online (virtual) programming. I encourage you to check it out and to suggest your ideas for new online activities.

While we look forward to the day when we will be able to resume our in-person events, when that time comes, we will also use our experience with these “distance-bridging” technologies to offer more online programming to complement our face-to-face activities. Such online programming will help us serve those who, for a variety of reasons, are unable or find it difficult to attend our programs in person.

PHONE NUMBERS FOR GUIDANCE: Watching parents age and dealing with the stress of what that implies for our own lives can take a serious toll on our emotional well-being.

• Are our parents financially independent?

• How will we pay for their care?

• Can we provide them with both appropriate and compassionate care?

• Can they age in their homes? Do they need to move to a facility to receive the care they need?

This group, facilitated by our “Partners in Caring” social worker Shari Baum, is designated specifically for Children of Aging Parents (C.A.P.) Our focus is to provide a safe space to support one another as we care for our aging parents with dignity and love.

HOW TO GET TESTED AT GLEN ISLAND: The first mobile testing facility opened in New Rochelle for people who may have been exposed to the new Coronavirus. Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who was in the city for the opening of the drive-through testing center, said residents of New Rochelle and Westchester can use the facility, which produces results in one to two days. The center, run by Northwell Health Labs, is at Glen Island Park, which Westchester County closed to the public.

The mobile testing center has six lanes for drivers and will test up to 500 people a day, Cuomo said. People were asked to call, make an appointment, and drive to the mobile test center, where medical staff will meet them at their car and take swab samples. Testing will be done by appointment only. The phone number is 888-364-3065.

A Message to Our Dear Nursery School Families

Though we cannot physically be with you, please know that we still feel connected to you in a very deep way. We are doing our utmost to maintain our community through Zoom meetings, parent-teacher dialogues, phone calls, Havdalah, specialists, and more, and we will continue to do so as our extraordinary staff builds our virtual Nursery School every day.

Enjoy the photos on page 9 which illustrate how some of our children are filling their days. Sending you all virtual hugs and kisses.

The Keruv Committee submitted this message to The Bulletin in mid-March, days after Governor Cuomo ordered the closing of New Rochelle public and private gathering places, including Beth El. As you read this, the closure order is still in effect and we continue to strive for community in purpose and in time, but not in space.

We hope that you and your loved ones have weathered, and will continue to weather, this crisis in the best health possible.

Keruv, a committee that’s all about inclusion, takes this opportunity to thank Beth El’s clergy, professionals, staff members, and lay leaders for their tireless efforts to keep our community together. By means of ritual, education, lifecycle events, and health news updates, their work has been an enormous exercise in inclusion. Absent physical doorways to walk through and gather together, they’ve worked to ensure that every one of us remains included in the Beth El community.

Necessity being the mother of invention, the Coronavirus challenge resulted in fast forwarding the development of Beth El’s

streaming and video technology, increased communications on Beth El’s Facebook sites, and more efficient ways to reach Beth El clergy via newly established phone and email hotlines. But inclusion efforts did not stop there. For all members, but especially for those who are not inveterate online users, a group of Beth El members organized themselves to contact every Beth El member by phone in order to see whether Beth El volunteer assistance could help: shopping, driving, babysitting, pretty much anything.

And this is merely what the outside world sees. It is difficult to imagine the depth and breadth of behind-the-scenes labor expended by our clergy, religious and nursery school teachers and directors, staff, and lay leaders in order to create this smooth and organized an outreach.

Our hats are off to a synagogue that practices what it preaches.

In spades.

In this difficult time, it is beautiful to see the ways in which our community has come ‘together’—virtual communities are becoming something regular and I feel the power of that community each time the Religious School comes together for Kehillah, the teens ‘hang’ during a Lounge, or holiday programming happens for our youth and families.

If you need anything in this challenging time, please don’t hesitate to reach out to bethelcares@ bethelnr.org. Beth El is also looking for volunteers to virtually help others. I am here to help too, so again, please do not hesitate.

I miss being together with everyone! Spring is here, and although we cannot gather at Beth El or hop a bus to New York City, there is so much we can still enjoy. Visit The New York Botanical Garden, nybg.org, and The Jewish Museum, thejewishmuseum. org, for a virtual experience. In the mood to exercise? There are many resources at Go4Life from the National Institute for Aging, Go4life.nia.nih.gov, or we can take a walk around or stretch. As Tim, our Balance instructor would remind you, remember to warm-up before exercising, and hydrate, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

During these uncertain times, consider creating a Gratitude List. At the end of each day, record one thing that you are grateful for. Place the paper in a small container for safe keeping. I started my list in early March and it was hard at first, but it has gotten easier, and I haven’t yet run out of things to be grateful for. When it seems as if everything is going wrong, focus on what is going right. Remind yourself that gratitude is about being aware of what you have, not what you do not have. When we resume our get-togethers, we could all bring our Gratitude Lists and be inspired by our strength and resilience.

Sisterhood Scene

Adapted from the Sisterhood Shabbat Message of Sue Taffet, National Membership Chair Sisterhood is described as a connection to someone who is not your biological relation.

Sometimes these “sisters” are closer to us than our own family members. They defend us, are there for us when we are ill, encourage us in hard times, celebrate with us in s’machot, and yet can challenge us and push us in order to be present for us when we need them.

All of our “sisters” are seeking to leave the world a better place than they found it. They help us to see that we are at our best when our “sisters” are at our side, cheering us on and watching our backs.

PASSOVER 5780/2020 FOR BETH EL SYNAGOGUE CENTER Dear Beth El Family, We are all struggling to keep up with our quickly changing world. Our top priority for the last several weeks has been taking care of our members and our community at large, doing our best to address all of the needs that have been identified. And while so much still remains uncertain, there are some things we can count on. Passover will be here in just a few days! So we are now shifting our focus to planning and preparing for one of the most celebrated Jewish holidays in our tradition.

There is some irony that each year at the seder we ask, “How is this night different from all others?” as we think about just how different this year’s seders will be. We know there are many questions surrounding the hows and whys of the upcoming holiday. Below you will find a link to the Passover FAQs, a guide that aims to address all of these questions. Our clergy have anticipated many of your questions, however, if you have a question that has not been answered, please do not hesitate to reach out to Rabbi Schuck, dschuck@bethelnr. org, or Rabbi Sitkin, zsitkin@bethelnr.org, and they will answer your question as soon as they can.

We will all be preparing differently and celebrating differently, but that does not mean that it can’t be joyous and maybe even fun. There are many virtual classes and programs being offered and more are being added, so keep your eyes out for Passover emails leading up to the holiday and during Hol Hamoed. We are saddened by the thought that we will not be together this year for Pesah because of COVID-19.

We also know that there are unique complications regarding Pesah preparation and observance. We are here to support each of you through this. This will serve as a resource for the “usual” questions, like how to kasher your kitchen and which foods require a special Passover heksher (kashrut label). We will also address questions that are unique to this time, such as how to plan for Pesah when there is limited access to food and supplies, how to host a seder for the first time, and so on. IMPORTANT PESAH 2020 INFORMATION Saturday, April 3rd Shabbat HaGadol, the last Shabbat before Passover Tuesday, April 7th Bedikat Hametz (checking for Hametz) 7:56 pm After dark, hide ten pieces of hametz (crackers or small pieces of bread) around the house, wrapped in paper or foil. Using a candle or flashlight to light the way, find the hametz and brush it into a paper bag using a feather and wooden spoon. Set aside for the next day. See the front of your Haggadah for readings.

Hold the hands of the people around your table and speak to their hearts. If you are alone, close your eyes, remember what it feels like to grasp the hand of a loved one who takes good care of you, and listen to them speak to your heart. “You must not feel ashamed that you are sitting around a small table for this modest seder. It is only like this now, because this year, we are enslaved.

Next year, we will be whole again.”

Until then, I wish you the strength necessary to withstand the anguish of once again, celebrating Passover in Mitzrayim. And I wish you the faith to know that you are not alone. We have emerged from more distressing circumstances in the past. This pandemic will be no different. We will dance again, hand in hand- with no social distancing- around our bimah.

May it happen speedily and with minimal harm!

Reflections from our Teen Delegation after the AIPAC Policy Conference

We gratefully extend a huge thanks to the Dorothy Fleishaker Religious School Fund for making this experience possible for our Teen delegation. Below are some reflections from their AIPAC Policy Conference experience.

“When I first heard about the conference, I was unsure of what to expect or if I should even go. I am a proud Jew, but I did not know much about the American-Israeli relationship and feared my lack of knowledge would put me at a disadvantage if I was ever faced with BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanction) and anti-Semitism. Thankfully, AIPAC was able to address these concerns and provide me with information and resources to pursue. The BDS forum was really interesting, and I was comforted knowing that Jewish organizations are able to stand up against discrimination. The number of famous speakers who attended or submitted a message to the conference was heartening… I thoroughly enjoyed listening, learning, and taking everything with a grain of salt in order to begin developing my own, independent opinion on the American-Israeli relationship.”—Hannah Bases, 18, New Rochelle High School “The AIPAC Policy Conference was an interesting and inspiring experience. Before I went to the Conference, I didn’t know a lot about the relationship between Israel and America, and the Conference taught me more about that. The Conference also taught me the importance of listening to different perspectives when it comes to the IsraelAmerica relationship; one person could have a completely different view than you and their perspective could teach you something new and even shift your own thinking…

During the three days, I listened to so many different views and ideas, and I came to understand our society as very polarized; it is important to listen to other people’s views whether you agree with them or not and have mutual respect for one another. Most of all, I loved spending time with my Beth El friends, Bekkah, and Rabbi Sitkin at the AIPAC Policy Conference and I hope I can do it again next year.”

When first hearing about this Conference I though I was “too young”... it was the opposite… It made me really proud to be Jewish, seeing that thousands of Jews are coming together, not out of hate, but out of love. Personally, I loved the general sessions seeing how both important and influential people care about and want to strengthen the America-Israel relationship. I never felt out of place because I new that i could talk to anyone there and feel a connection. For the first time I felt truly confident wearing my Kippah a such a large Conference and was complimented because of it. Overall, it was a very influential experience and would recommend this to any and every teen, even with the slightest interest.”

It was very amazing seeing Jews and non-Jews around the world coming to this place all with the same intentions to support Israel… Overall the trip was very eye-opening and an experience I won’t forget and will remain with me forever.”

A huge todah rabbah to Risë and Alan Stern who were the sole funders of this year’s teen Midnight Run, where over 20 of our teens packed clothing and food to bring to the homeless in New York City at the end of February.
