Summer Projects School is out and that means our maintenance teams have a few short months to tackle a lot of big projects.

It is always a pleasure to see so many graduates cross the stage in June, celebrating their hard work with diploma in hand and bright futures ahead.

Our graduating classes keep getting bigger. Since the start of school two years ago, we've grown 1,000 students in our district. That trend will continue for the foreseeable future as families continue to move our way for the affordable housing and great schools.

Thanks to our voter-approved bond, we will soon build three new schools to help house all our new students.

Our first new elementary school is scheduled to open in time for the 2021/22 school year.

While that’s two years away, there is a lot of work to be done before then.

This summer, I am proud we will be once again offering free summer lunches to students at three of our schools: Clover Creek, Evergreen, and Bethel Middle.

This is a critical source of nutrition for our students and their younger siblings over the summer months.

We are also offering a free fifth grade summer math camp that will help our students academically.

And this fall, our new socialemotional learning curriculum will help teachers support their students as they enter a brand new year of school.

CONSTRUCTION The dust has settled on our historic February bond election and the hard work of designing and building schools is now underway. We know that you, as members of the Bethel community, have entrusted us to be good stewards of your tax dollars. Part of that stewardship is keeping you informed and educated, so we will be using this space to give you regular updates on all our bondrelated projects.

Elementary #18 Things are progressing nicely with the architectural design of our newest elementary school, and it’s looking like the School Board will begin reviewing the plans in July.

While we don’t yet know the exact design, we do know that Elementary #18 will be the largest elementary school in the district. The school will be 80,000 square feet, and will be home to 700 students — and that’s not counting the space in back for four double portables (8 classrooms) which will house an additional 200 students. In order to comfortably accommodate all of those students, Elementary #18 will utilize a three-wing

model, similar to Spanaway Middle School.

Elementary #18 will also get “half street improvements” — these include pavement from the center line, curbs, gutters, stormwater facilities, and sidewalks — along the entire parcel owned by the district on Waller Road.

Unfortunately, for a number of reasons we won’t be able to build a sidewalk any further than our property lines because Pierce County won’t allow us to just put in a sidewalk or an asphalt pathway.

They require complete “half street” improvements.

In addition, those improvements would need a larger right-of-way than what currently exists, so it would also require the district to acquire quite a bit of property from multiple property owners, which would be cost-prohibitive.

All this means that Elementary #18 will be a busonly school for the most part, which means few, if any students will be authorized to walk to school due to safety concerns.

I thought the new BHS was going across from North Star Elementary?

Confusion over the location of the new BHS site is common, especially with the location of the new sign. Yes, it will be across the street from North Star Elementary. There really isn’t a place to put the sign on 224th, so the sign is located on the west side of the district-owned property on 70th ( across from North Star and behind Rainier View Church).

What does this new location mean for students in Roy? A lot of work still needs to be done by the Boundary Review Committee, which is scheduled to reconvene in the fall. Prior to each new school opening up, the committee will work on setting boundaries for the new schools, which will

inevitably adjust boundaries of the other schools.

One thing the Boundary Committee is committed to is working hard to limit the disruption to families. Both the committee and the district want to make sure that communication is at the forefront, so there will be plenty of time for parents to prepare for the changes that are coming.

What is the old Bethel High School building going to become?

After the new Bethel High opens in 2023, the old BHS building will be used as a “swing school.”

This will allow students and staff from Cedarcrest, Evergreen, and Naches Trail to move out of their current buildings while construction crews get to work on their expansion and renovation projects that are also being funded by the bond.

This process will not only help accelerate the construction of each project, but also saves money with the reduced construction time.

2019 Summer Projects This is shaping up to be another busy summer for our Maintenance Department. From major roof repairs to classroom painting projects, our buildings are sure to be busy with activity while students are enjoying the summer sunshine. Here's a list of some of the major projects that will be undertaken this summer.

• New boilers at Cougar Mountain Middle and North Star Elementary • New portables at Spanaway Lake High School (3 double portables), Bethel High School (2 double portables), Graham Elementary (1 double portable) and Elk Plain School of Choice (1 double portable) • Portable repairs at Bethel High (9 portables), Cedarcrest Middle (6 portables), and Roy Elementary (3 portables) • Exterior painting and repairs at Frontier Middle, Pioneer Valley Elementary and Roy Elementary • Interior painting at Camas Prairie and Graham elementaries • Emergency generator at Educational Service Center Building #2 • Dry sprinkler replacement system at Frontier Middle • Roof replacements at Centennial, Naches Trail and Roy elementaries • Resurfacing of tennis courts at Graham-Kapowsin High School • Parking lot improvements at Bethel Middle and Roy Elementary • We will also begin the first year of our Hazard Mitigation Projects, which include seismic upgrades at Bethel Middle School (anchor roof to walls in the auxiliary gym), Elk Plain (anchor roof to walls), and the Operations Service Center (anchor masonry walls to framing).

All of these projects are separate from the 2019 Bond that will construct three brand new schools and renovate and expand other schools in the district. You can find updates on the bond-funded projects at: bethelsd.org/bondprojects.

Leading the way with safe and efficient buses Bethel’s Transportation Department has long been viewed as a leader and innovator when it comes to safe and efficient school buses.

Over the past five years, the district has been replacing some of its old diesel buses with new, more fuelefficient propane school buses. So far, 32 of Bethel’s 216 school buses run on propane.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Environmental Protection Agency, the district will soon get nine more buses that have the cleanest emissions on the market. Bethel will be the first district in the country to use the Blue Bird Vision propane buses, which are 90% cleaner than the current EPA standards.

Not only are the propane buses more environmentally friendly, but they’re also much quieter. Bus drivers say that feature makes their job easier and makes for a safer drive.

“When you have students in the back that are not doing what they’re supposed to be doing or following the rules, you’re able to kind of hear what they’re doing,” driver Josette Camacho told KOMO News, which recently came to Bethel to report on the new buses.

The nine new buses will be on the road by the beginning of next school year. In order to safely and efficiently fuel all of those buses, the district will also add a new 4,000-gallon propane tank by the fall.
