Bethel at a Glance The Bethel School District is one of the largest school districts in Washington State, both in terms of enrollment and geographic size. Covering over 200 square miles in southeast Pierce County, Bethel encompasses several, unique communities, including Roy, Spanaway and Graham.

Bethel’s schools comprise over two million square feet of floor space. In 2015, the district opened a new transportation center and central kitchen facility. Bethel is also home to the Pierce County Skills Center.

As a Bethel substitute, you have the opportunity to work with our 20,000+ students in any of our 27 schools as well as the Pierce County Skill Center and preschools, and accept roles ranging from General Education, Dual Language, Special Education, and more!

Schedule Bethel uses Frontline (formerly Aesop) which allows substitutes to pick up assignments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week enabling you to create a schedule that works best for you.

Professional Development Bethel substitutes are eligible to participate in professional development opportunities offered by the district.

Training topics include iPad/Apple technology, curriculum, classroom management, etc.

Long-Term Opportunities – Certificated Subs only There are frequent needs for long-term substitutes throughout the district; these positions are 21+ days in length.

Benefits Medical and Dental benefits are offered once 630 hours are worked.

Long-term Substitutes receive: Support – Both a laptop and iPad are issued for the duration of the assignment to ensure success in the position.

Higher Rate of Pay – Eligibility for a daily Per Diem pay rate is based on school district experience and education (BA, MA, etc.).

Incentives – Certificated Subs only Device – Bethel appreciates the commitment that its substitutes make to working in our district. We offer a device to those who worked 100+ days in the previous school year, which can be used for the duration of the current school year.

Lump Sum – Certificated Substitutes who work 50, 70 or 90 days within a school year are eligible to receive a “July Incentive” lump sum of $200, $300 or $400, which is paid out in July.

Clock Hours – Certificated Substitutes may register for Professional Development, based on availability, and receive FREE clock hours upon completion.

Classified Staff – Career Opportunities CAREER OPPORTUNITY DESCRIPTIONS Child Nutrition Support students by providing healthy, nutritious and low-cost or free meals that meet the latest state and federal nutrition guidelines.

The department’s staff consists of cooks, kitchen staff, servers, cashiers, warehouse, drivers and central kitchen production staff. The child nutrition department prepares, serves and delivers about 10,000 lunches and 4,500 breakfasts every school day.

Paraeducators / Special Services Paraeducators work with certificated staff to support students by supplementing regular classroom curriculum with additional enrichment activities for students. Most jobs are instructional in nature and they provide other direct services to children and youth and their families.

This category also encompasses non-instructional positions to include student supervision, courier, campus safety and printshop.

Secretary / Clerks Works with staff, students, families and community members to support the needs of students in Bethel schools. Depending on the job, secretaries and clerks might answer phones, filing, data processing and tracking various data required by school, district, state or federal guidelines.

Custodial Works with staff and students to maintain the building and facilities to support a learning environment that promotes health, attitude and pride of students. The head custodian and custodial team operate in accordance with district and school policies and procedures, and receive direction from the building administrators and the supervisor for maintenance/custodial.

Maintenance / Grounds Responsible for keeping the district’s schools and other facilities in top condition. This department supports staff and students by providing safe, clean learning and working environments throughout the school district. Healthy buildings lead to healthy, happy students.

Technology Works with staff to support the technological needs of students and staff in Bethel schools. The department supports both teaching and learning with digital learning tools, such as computers and hand-held devices. Supports district users in a wide range of software applications and hardware; while maintaining a cooperative working relationship with a diverse population of users.

Transportation Department is dedicated to transporting students in a safe, welcoming atmosphere; transporting more than 10,000 students to and from school every school day. Transportation works with staff, students, parents and community members to promote safety and community relations.

Mechanics Support students and staff by providing preventative maintenance and repairs to school buses and district vehicles.

Bus Assistants Works with staff, special education students and parents to provide a high level of safety and health awareness. Assists bus driver with safe transportation of students having special physical needs or behavior disorders. Works as a team with the bus driver to create a positive atmosphere for students.

Classified Staff – Career Opportunities Bethel’s classified staff fulfill many different roles for Bethel schools. The classified staff is an integral part of the school environment. They form relationships with the students and model teamwork and good citizenship.

Many of the classified positions are available on a part-time basis. Classified employees are in support positions; these positions may be administrative support, maintenance, trades personnel and transportation. All are essential to the school district.

Special & Support Services - Career Opportunities Bethel’s Special Services Department provides a continuum of services to students with disabilities from birth to age 21.

Special & Support Services - Career Opportunities CAREER OPPORTUNITY DESCRIPTIONS Certificated Educators Work with staff, students, families and other members of the special services team to develop IEPs and provide academic services that address individual student needs.

School Behavior Analyst The SBA works together with district and school-based teams to plan, develop, and monitor a variety of behavioral support services.

Services and programs include: special education assessment, legal compliance, collaboration on IEPs, development of plans for student behavior issues, file reviews, transfers and consultation with staff, students and parents.

Speech Language Pathologists Work with students and staff to assess, diagnose and provide treatment for disorders related to speech, language and communication skills; develop an individualized plan to meet each student’s needs.

Services and programs include: collaboration with school staff and parents to develop and implement individual or group programs, consultation and support for classroom activities.

Special Education Programs include: Independent Learning Center/Elementary (ILC), Independent Learning Center/Secondary (ILC), Transition, Structured Teaching, Early Primary, Positive Behavior Intervention Program/Elementary, Middle and High School (PATHS), FOSS, Options, Learning Success Academy (LSA), Resource Room, Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing and Vision, Health Services and Home Hospital.

Support Programs include Early Childhood Education, English Learners (EL), and Title I/LAP.

Benefits FAQs When will my benefits become effective through SEBB? • If starting at the beginning of the school year on or prior to the first day of school, effective September 1 of the current year.

• If starting after the beginning of the school year, an employee will become benefit-eligible the first of the following month.

• If transferring from another Washington State Public School, ESD, or Charter School, AND there has been no break in coverage, benefits will follow employee uninterrupted.

Supplemental LTD can be purchased to increase your monthly benefit to 60% of your monthly gross with a max of $10,000/month.

How much will I have to contribute towards Benefits?

• Employees waiving Medical will pay $0 for their core benefits.

• Employees enrolling in Employee-only medical will pay anywhere between $13 - $116/month, depending on the medical plan chosen.

• Employees enrolling an entire family, Spouse and Child(ren) will pay no more than $348 for the highest price plan.

When can I make a change to my Benefits after I enroll as a New Hire?

• SEBB Open Enrollment will be in the fall of each year.

• Changes can only be made outside of Open Enrollment if there is a qualifying event that would lead to a Special Open Enrollment, such as Gain/Loss of coverage, birth of a baby, change in marital status, etc.
