PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2017

W

elcome to the latest edition of the QPSA magazine. As the new President I would like to inform members that the AGM for 2017 has been held and I would like to introduce and welcome the Executive and Committee members for 2017 – 2018: Vice President – currently vacant Treasurer – Trevor Wendt Secretary – Joanna Stone Committee: Paull Houston, Belinda Patrick & Susan Alderice

O

n behalf of the Committee and members I would also like to thank outgoing President, Mr John McCoomb for all his years of service to the QPSA through his roles on the Executive, Committee and also as a member since 1995. All the time and effort that he and his wife, Kim have put into the Association over this time has played a major part in making what the Association is today. We wish them all the best for the future in their retirement. 2017 has been a busy year for the QPSA Committee still finalising aspects of last years AP&ES Games. Unfortunately this has taken up a lot of our time and resources throughout the year and the fallout of this is that we were left with no time to organise the Qld Police Games 2017 and I would like to sincerely apologise for this. We promise you that the Qld Games will again return in 2019. I am looking forward to working with our new Committee over the next year to lift the awareness of the QPSA to all QPS and PSBA staff and to help grow our membership. We encourage our current members to let their peers and workmates know about the QPSA and how we can help or financially assist them in their chosen sports if they become a member. Finally as the Qld Delegate, in late October I will be attending the Australian & New Zealand Police Games Federation (ANZPGF) AGM as well as the launch of the 2018 AP&ES Games which will be held in Mandurah, Western Australia. On my return I will provide further details on their games but for now I encourage you to have a look at their website (www.apandesgames.com.au) and Facebook page (XVII Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games 2018) For those of you who are nearing the end of winter season sports and about to play finals I wish you all the best… Scott Adams President QPSA Inc.

QPSA REPORT National Police Football Championships that all who attended enjoyed the week both on and off the field, and as an organising committee we certainly like to think we set a new bench mark for hosting a National Carnival.

T

he QPS Crocs competed recently in the 27th National Police Football Championships. The carnival is held in a different state each year and this was Queensland’s turn to host, and the carnival was held at Cazaly’s Stadium in Cairns. It was a fantastic week, played on one of the best AFL grounds in Queensland, if not Australia, with great facilities and fine weather that finished off with the final dinner at Cazaly’s with special guest speaker Sam Newman. I certainly hope

The team work displayed by our committee, coach and players in ensuring the week was successful is very much appreciated. It would be remiss of me not to thank our Cairns organising committee that ensured hosting a carnival away from Brisbane was a possibility. We would also like to thank our local partners AFL Cairns, Cairns City Council and Cazaly’s all of whom worked with us in providing the week that we did. The Crocs had a great trip, and on rest days got out and about and experienced Tropical North Queensland and the adventures that it provides. I would like to thank the 2016 committee that have again provided me with valuable support. I particularly would like to thank club stalwarts Daryl Stephenson, Chris Collins and Leo Lahey as well as Dan McEntee whose contribution and timely advice was

very much appreciated during this year’s preparations. A huge thanks to Luke Faulkner at LRF Sports for supplying all our clothing, on field gear and All Australian jumpers. If anyone is interested in discussing clothing/club options feel free to send him an email at luke@lrfsport. com.au. I think it’s fair to state that the Crocs are improving each and every year. From our humble beginnings in 2004 and the early years, we have certainly continued to grow stronger and have been lucky enough to recruit new players each year that helps us keep moving forward. Our 2016 carnival was no different and with the addition of 12 rookies to our 43 men squad (our biggest to date) we headed in to the week hopeful of a strong performance across all 3 games. We were lucky enough to have a Saturday training run at Cazaly’s where the squad were able to train as a team for the first time. Not ideal preparation for a carnival but having the squad made up of members from all over the State, training is not an option for us during the year.

QPSA REPORT

cont

National Police Football Championships The week went well for the Crocs, opening with a hard fought win against Tasmania on day one 8-9-57 to 6-844. Day two saw a dominant display by eventual winners Victoria, cruising to an 1810-118 to 1-5-11 victory. Day three against New South Wales saw the Crocs best performance of the week, comfortably accounting for our State or Origin combatants by 60 points, 12-9-81 to 3-3-21. Wins against Tasmania and NSW ensured that we retained the Norm Watt Memorial Shield and the Brett Irwin/Bob Prenter Memorial Shield. All games were played in true Police Football spirit and particularly against Victoria the Crocs were able to perform admirably after being decimated by injuries. Hopefully in the years moving forward the Crocs can grow the depth required to compete at the high levels of the big 3 States – Victoria, SA and WA. We were lucky enough to finish 3rd overall, which was our best finish to a National

Carnival. Throughout the week we had a number of outstanding players. Congratulations to Peter Jarvie and Anthony Chandler who took out the Queensland awards for Player of the Carnival and Players Player. Our Damian Leeding Medal winner for 2016 was awarded to Chris Phillips. Congratulations also to our 2016 All Australian Representatives – Peter Jarvie, Justin Allan, Anthony Chandler and Kayne Nund. Lastly, a special mention must go out to Kayne (Sugar) Nund, who is the 8th member of the Crocs to be awarded as a Crocs Life Member,

for his services and commitment to our Football Club. Well done Sugar!!!! Our preparations are well under way for the 2017 Championships in Adelaide, and the committee have been working tirelessly to make sure the tour is another successful one for the Crocs. GOLF REPORT Golfing success all part of the plan..

T

im Deakin is an Inspector in his 37th year of service in the QPS. Tim’s love of the game of golf and drive to be competitive at the national amateur level in Golf Australia’s Men’s Senior Order of Merit has brought him recent success, Australia-wide travel, and a nation-wide network of golfing buddies. Achieving 6th place in the Australian Men’s Senior Match Play Championship at Coolangatta Tweed Heads Golf Club in June this year, saw Tim’s ranking position soar to #12 in Australia. The Senior Men’s Match Play Championship is open to the leading 32 players from the Australian Men’s Senior Ranking System (for players 55yrs and over). Tim entered this event ranked at 18th position, was drawn into pool #5 of the eight fourplayer pools, including the Australian #2 Kym Olsen (each pool plays 3 rounds of match play). Great form in the opening two matches saw Tim win the first two matches early and well, but he lost against Kym Olsen (2down with one hole to play). Overall however, Tim’s wins were by larger margins than Kym’s and Tim placed first in his pool stage and progressed through in the main draw (Quarter Finals and positions 1-8) and eventually finished a strong 6th in the field of 32 – that is seven rounds of golf in 5 days!!! Tim is a long-time golfer starting at Kingaroy in his first posting the early 80’s. Finding camaraderie in the local community, and later in State and National police golfing circles, Tim is relishing playing the best and most meaningful golf of his life. “I planned to play this game for life but never thought I could reach this level. Having a passion for the game has meant committing to keeping healthy physically, but I work on maintaining

GOLF Cont Tim Deakin a positive mind-set, and I’m really grateful to still be competitive. These golfers are talented, and they all work at it. We all have niggles and injuries to overcome, but the opportunity to be part of an Australian Senior Team drew me into this competition. I played well last year, and was finally selected in March this year to represent Golf Australia and play against the Australian Defence Force Team at the National Golf Club on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria.”

A long-time member of the Queensland Police Golf Club, Tim has represented in Qld Police golf teams in national competitions since the early 90’s, was selected in the first Australian Police Golf Team in 2015 (Team photo attached, Tim is back row on the far right) (which also played against an Australian Defence Force Team), and except for injury, sees a golf as a ‘game for life’. Tim’s retirement from his

policing career draws nearer, which he says he will be ready for. “I’ve owned my own professional career development for years, and owning my retirement plan was no different; I have to retire in the next 2 years, but I’m not done with competing or contributing. When I leave policing, I have my own business consulting career to continue, and that will pay for all the golf I can play! So, find your passion, what you love to be part of, plan to do it and start that journey now!”

T

he Queensland Police Women’s Soccer teamaffectionately known as “The Heat,” started playing in 2014 with one team contesting the 2014 Australasian Police and Emergency Services games held in Melbourne. Since then, there have been a number of friendly competitions held with officers from across Queensland playing for the simple love of the game and the comradery that being in a Police and Emergency Services Team brings. 2016 saw the Queensland Ladies Team double in size when “The Heat” took 2 teams to the 2016 Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games held on the Sunshine Coast. The ladies coming from all sections of the state managed to win a silver in the futsal competition-

and in the outdoor competition, the girls in a very close fight to the finish won the bronze medal round against Victoria in overtime and through a penalty shootout. Our second Queensland Team finished strongly as well indicating that in the coming years the Queensland Ladies team will be turning up “The Heat” and will be a “force” to be reckoned with. The team for Adelaide national tournament 2017 will have a different flavour with the Queensland ladies embracing partner agencies to form the first ever Queensland Ladies national tournament team. Girls will come from the QLD Fire Service, Department of Corrections, Police and other government agencies to support the first ever National Police and Emergency Services Soccer Tournament in Adelaide. EXERCISE TIPS Sitting a lot? Two exercises to loosen tight hips

T

he hip flexors are a pair of muscles (Psoas and Illiacus) that pass down the front of the hip, originating from the pelvis and spine and attaching to the femur. The hip flexors are responsible for flexion at the hip (the forward movement of the leg when kicking a ball or knee lift when running) and also play a key role in holding the position of the pelvis when standing, walking and running. In Australia, adults on average spend 22 hours and 10 minutes per week sitting for work and travel (Australian Health Survey 2011-12). Sitting for extended periods places your hips into a flexed or shortened position which, over time, can result in tightening of your hip flexors and the formation of trigger points (small knots of contracted muscle fibres) within the muscles. Tight hip flexors can shift your pelvis into what is termed anterior pelvic tilt (Fig. 1) altering the position and function of your lower back and reducing your ability to effectively recruit the abdominal, gluteal and hamstring muscles.

Fig 1

Neutral pelvis

anterior pelvic tilt

Figure 1 – Neutral pelvis and pelvis showing anterior pelvic tilt. Two simple exercises to counter the negative effects of sitting are the Hip flexor trigger point release (Fig. 2) and the Hip flexor stretch (Fig. 3). The exercises can be performed as often as required but a minimum of three times per week is ideal to produce significant positive change to the muscles. Perform 3-5 minutes of light physical activity prior to undertaking the exercises to warm the muscles and enhance their ability to lengthen. The exercises are ideal as part of a warm up and cool down for physical activities such as running or prior to any lower body strength training. Perform the Hip flexor trigger point release first, followed by the Hip flexor stretch.

Figure 2 – Hip flexor trigger point release

Equipment: •Trigger ball or tennis ball. •12-15kg dumbbell or kettle bell

1. Lie on your back with hip and knee bent on the triggering side. 2. Locate the very top of your hip bone on the side and move approximately 1-2 finger widths towards your belly button. 3. Place the ball at this point and gently place the Kettle Bell or Dumbbell on top of the ball to provide pressure. 4. Move KB and ball around the muscle in this area until you find trigger points. 5. Hold on any trigger points for 2030s or until discomfort eases. 6.Repeat for other side.

EXERCISE TIPS Strength Training

M

uscle mass naturally diminishes with age. If you don’t do anything to replace the lean muscle you lose, you’ll increase the percentage of fat in your body, but strength training can help you preserve and enhance your muscle mass — at any age. Resistance training increases muscle strength by pitting the muscles against a weight or force. Different forms of resistance training include free weights, weight machines, resistance bands and your own body weight. The beginner should consider training two or three times per week to gain the maximum benefit.

Whether you are wanting to tone, lose weight or increases strength, a wholistic approach is always best for sustainable results. Combine Strength training, cardiovascular training, hydration and healthy eating for best results

Strength training also helps: ■ Develop strong bones. By stressing your bones, strength training increases bone density and reduces the risk of osteoporosis. ■ Control your weight. As you gain muscle, your body gains a bigger “engine” to burn calories more efficiently — which can result in weight loss. The more toned your muscles, the easier it is to control your weight. ■ Reduce your risk of injury. Building muscle helps protect your joints from injury. It also contributes to better balance, which can help you maintain independence as you age. ■ Boost your stamina. As you get stronger, you won’t fatigue as easily. ■ Manage chronic conditions. Strength training can reduce the signs and symptoms of many chronic conditions, including

arthritis, back pain, depression, diabetes, obesity and osteoporosis. ■ Sharpen your focus. Some research suggests that regular strength training helps improve attention for older adults. Strength training can be done at home or in the gym. Consider the options: ■ Body weight. You can do many exercises with little or no equipment. Try push-ups, pull-ups, abdominal crunches and leg squats. ■ Resistance tubing. Resistance tubing is inexpensive, lightweight tubing that provides resistance when stretched. You can choose from many types of resistance tubes in nearly any sporting goods store. ■ Free weights. Barbells and dumbbells are classic strength training tools. ■ Weight machines. Most fitness centers offer various resistance machines. You can also invest in weight machines for use at home.

EXERCISE TIPS Cardio Training

O

n non weight training days, aim to do some form of cardio vascular training 3-4 days a week. Cardiovascular exercise is any form of rhythmical exercise completed for prolongued periods of time (usually greater than 15 minutes) and involves working large amounts of the bodies muscle mass while increasing the pulse and breathing rate above normal levels.

Examples of cardiovascular exercise include: -

Top 10 Benefits of Drinking Water: Don’t Medicate, Hydrate!

■ Brisk Walking ■ Jogging/Running ■ Swimming ■ Cycling ■ Stepping ■ Aerobics Classes ■ Using a Cross Trainer

■ Increases Energy & Relieves Fatigue. ■ Promotes Weight Loss ■ Flushes Out Toxins ■ Improves Skin Complexion ■ Maintains Regularity ■ Boosts Immune System ■ Natural Headache Remedy ■ Prevents Cramps & Sprains.

Combine your training with adequate fluid intake of 1-2 litres of water a day and a diet of fresh vegetables and fruit, 2-3 serves of protein and whole foods for a leaner, stronger, healthier you.arthritis, back pain, depression, diabetes, obesity and osteoporosis. ■ Sharpen your focus. Some research suggests that regular strength training helps improve attention for older adults.

Drinking water makes us feel so refreshed that it actually improves our state of mind. You don’t even have to be severely in need of it to benefit

THE HISTORY OF THE AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND

POLICE GAMES HISTORY First held in 1984, the inaugural Australian National Police Games were founded with the intention of bringing Police Service personnel together under the common banner of sport. This spirit of friendly competition has been expanded to embrace competitors from New Zealand and other Pacific nations. From 1999, all full-time Emergency Services personnel were also invited to compete. The Australasian Police and Emergency Service Games is the property of the Australia New Zealand Police Games Federation. The Federation is managed by a Chairman and Board of Directors, Administration, Finance, Marketing, Operations and Sport. The Board is supported by a Committee which is made of delegates from the sporting bodies in each jurisdiction. Like no other event on the Emergency Services calendar, the Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games builds camaraderie and promotes a healthy life style through the participation in sport, while heightening the public’s awareness of Police and Emergency Services. The games are conducted every second year at a new location which also provides competitors the opportunity to travel and enjoy a holiday at numerous locations throughout Australia and New Zealand. Competitors at the Games also contribute points from specific events towards two trophies which are awarded by the Federation. The Australia New Zealand Police Games Federation Trophy, and the Emergency Services Shield. These respective trophies are retained by the winning jurisdiction for the period between each games, when once again they are up for grabs.

or those attending the 2018 Mandurah Games Mandurah is a city on the southwest coast of Western Australia. Situated approximately 72 kilometres (45 mi) south of the state capital, Perth, it is the state’s second-largest city, with a population just ahead of that of Bunbury.

T

he city takes its name from a Noongar word meaning “meeting place” or “trading place”. A townsite for Mandurah was laid out in 1831, two years after the establishment of the Swan River Colony, but attracted few residents. Until the post-war boom of the 1950s and 1960s it was little more than a small fishing village. In the last few decades, Mandurah’s reputation for boating and fishing has seen it attract a large number of retirees, especially to the canal developments in the city’s south.

M

andurah is known for the Peel-Harvey Estuary with its abundant wildlife and migratory waterbirds. The Mandurah Community Museum features exhibits on the Peel region’s history. Halls Head Beach has a large resident dolphin population. To the south, Yalgorup National Park is home to thrombolites, rare, rock-like microorganism formations, at Lake Clifton. Mandurah is considered to be the unofficial gateway to the South West and possesses a variety of tourist attractions, especially based around the water. It is a major fishing and crabbing area in Western Australia, with the city well known for the blue manna crab (Portunus pelagicus) with a festival held in early March known as Crabfest. Like neighbouring settlements Bunbury and Rockingham dolphins and whales frequent the city annually and dolphin and whale watching are a popular pastime. In December, the canal areas in Mandurah becomes well known for their Christmas lights and special boat cruises are often promoted as a result.
