A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2017

W

elcome to 2017, but I’m guessing by the time you get to read this letter over a quarter of the year will be gone. To all those that attended and competed in the Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games (AP&ES) on the Sunshine Coast in October last year, I really hope you had a wonderful time, enjoyed the competition, entertainment and camaraderie. It was a great opportunity for me to catch up with a lot of old friends and acquaintances and make new friends from all over Australia and New Zealand. It was the third-time Queensland Police Sporting Association Inc. (QPSA) had been able to stage the games. The previous times being 1991 and 2001, and I’m guessing it will probably be another 15 years at least before we get them in Queensland again. The next games are in Mandurah Western Australia in 2018 followed by Adelaide in 2020. These games were probably my last involvement, as after 22 years being either President, Secretary, or Delegate to the Australia New Zealand Police Games Federation it’s time to hand over the reins. As the QPSA did with the games in 2001 we again raised the bar in 2016, demonstrating to all the members of the Federation just how to stage a professional event. Therefore, I take this opportunity to thank the Games Management Team, and the QPSA Inc. committee, many of who gave of their own time to ensure all necessary resources were available and all events ran smoothly. A special mention must also go to all the Sport Coordinators for their efforts, without them we would not have been able stage the event in such professional way. Because there are still a number matters that require audit and clarification by the Games Management Team the Annual General Meeting has been postponed until June to ensure that we can provide all our members with an accurate account of the past years activities, including the games wrap. The timing of the AGM still complies with the Legislation and our incorporation status. Finally, I must thank the Commissioner and the QPS for their ongoing support. I also recognise the excellent assistance we received from The Queensland Fire and Emergency Service. We certainly could not have staged such a large event without the contribution made by both agencies. To those financial members of the QPSA, thank you for your continued support. To those other QPS employees who attended the games, had a great time and read this this letter, please consider joining our Association. Check out our Web Sites both internal Police Sport on the Bulletin Board and external www.qldpolicesport.com and see what sponsorship we provide to assist our members and in sport and other Police Organisations such as Legacy and the PCYC. A dollar a pay is a small contribution that can save you considerable expense in the future. Yours in Sport John McCoomb President.

GAMES MANAGER The Games in Review

T

he 2016 Australasian Police and Emergency Games have come and gone. What a Games they were The Sunshine Coast lived up to its name with amazing weather all week and visitors returning home with an early sun tan to show off to their family and friends. The Sunshine Coast community welcomed well over 3000 competitors and supporters from across Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia and the Ukraine. Competing in 47 sports the competition was to a high standard and the competitive spirit was always on show.

The highlight of the Games was the Opening Ceremony. Sgt Greg Croft put on his artistic hat and created the best Opening Ceremony ever seen. With the Sunshine Coast Stadium fully lit and the grand stand at capacity the crowd was entertained by sky divers, a team march past, led by specialists units from the Mounted Unit, the Dog Squad, Road Policing, Surf Life Saving Queensland, Queensland Ambulance Service and QFES, a Torch Run and fireworks. The first ever Torch Run was conducted around South East Queensland lead by Sgt Wendy O’Neil, and her team made up of representatives of Emergency Service personnel from Qld. They entered the Stadium with the torch lit and held high, they walked down the avenue of athletes to the cauldron which was lit and the flame of competition burned bright. The Games were officially opened by Commissioner Ian Stewart, Patron of the Queensland Police Sporting Association (QPSA). In attendance was a vast array of Dignitaries and VIP’s, including The United States Consulate General, Valerie Fowler, Senior Executives of the Emergency Services across Australia and New Zealand, Politicians, Sponsors and invited guests. The entire audience was treated to a visual display like no one expected. Local pyrotechnic company Fuse, lit up the Kawana night sky like never before. Motorists on Nicklin Way were pulling over. There was not a head turned anywhere but up. What a night! Let the Games begin! The sports were conducted almost entirely on the Sunshine Coast apart from the Equestrian and Clay Target at Caboolture and the Fresh Water Angling at Bjelkie-Petersen Dam. We thank our partner the Sunshine Coast Regional Council for all their support and allowing those events to be conducted at alternate venues. 47 sports were conducted across the games and each of those sports required venues, equipment, volunteers and most importantly coordinators. A special thankyou to all those who put their hands up as coordinators and made the sports successful. All of this wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work and long hours by Sgt Mark Wright and Richie Sheehy (QFES). Queensland as you would expect, being the host, had 950 competitors consisting of 600 police, 145 fire and 89 ambulance employees as well as other Qld agencies.

T

he Games Hub was the main focal point after hours with an array of bands to suit all tastes. The Hub set up was fantastic and a special thanks to Sunshine Coast Stadium Manager, Simon Ball and his staff, for working with Games Management to build an amazing venue. Many a war story was told over a cooling beverage and burger with medals from the days’ battle proudly adorned on the victors chests. An event of this size isn’t successful without a solid web and registration site and Sgt Cassie Pukallus took this to the next level. Hundreds of hours of work went into an almost perfect support system. Congratulations Cassie and your team of students from Tafe Qld, Sunshine Coast, well done. Administration and Logistics duties by Sgt Michelle Clarke based in Brisbane provided support for all of the management team 24/7. Michelle maintained her energy and enthusiasm throughout the event with a highlight being the amazing registration bags for all competitors. The Games are never successful without partners and sponsors. A special thankyou to our major Partner the Sunshine Coast Council, IPac as our Platinum Sponsor and our Gold Sponsors, BMW, Tafe Qld, Police Health and Q Bank. Our goals for the event were to increase female participation and to support the local community. We reached a 30% female participation rate and helped inject $4.2 million into the local economy in a week. On top of that the Games handed over $10,500 to three charities – The Children’s Hospital Burns Unit, Volunteering Sunshine Coast and Helping Hands. Finally a massive thankyou to the Games Team – Greg Croft, Cassie Pukallus, Mark Wright, Michelle Clarke, Richie Sheehy, Luke Feldman, Vanessa Herbert and Geoff Cooper, the QPSA and the ANZPGF. We were able to pull off a fantastic event. We have set the bar high for the 2018 Games in Mandurah, Western Australia. I can’t wait to see the amazing show they have planned. Get in early and get it in your calendar to attend. They were, “The Games for the Real Super Heroes”. BAKER TO VEGAS O

ver the last 30 years the race has undergone many changes to the start and finish lines the actual course and the very strict rules and guidelines of the race. Initially the brainchild of Chuck Foote, General Manager of the Los Angeles Police Revolver and Athletic Club, Inc. (LAPRAAC) and Larry Moore, LAPD Athletic Director who drove the course and over those long stretches of highway came up with the name for the race and its basic format. The first stop was Baker, California, where a visit with the Baker High School principal secured a home for the starting line. It was followed by a whistle stop in Shoshone and then came Pahrump, Nevada, the halfway point to the race. The welcome the runners receive in Pahrump — with coffee, water, cookies a great introduction of each runner as they pass through the town in the middle of the night makes Pahrump a pivotal part of the Baker to Vegas Relay story. Our runners can expect to experience temperatures ranging from well over 40c with low humidity during the day to sub zero at night as they cross Death Valley. In 2016 there were over 6,00 runners, 4000 plus support staff and 5,500 vehicles. Over 700 runners were treated and 10 were admitted to hospital and another nine were flown to hospital, treated and released. The logistics and planning for a race such as this is enormous with planning and fundraising starting two years out. Team Captains Chris Bird and John McCoomb have constant communications with the US to organise, on-ground support, accommodation, vehicles, radios, hi-vis tabards, race plans amongst many other things.

O

n Sunday night eight hours after the last team finishes, an Awards Ceremony will be held in the Hilton Hotel Convention room for over 6000 runners and support personnel; several thousand family members and friends; and almost a thousand race volunteers. Over 145 VIP law enforcement dignitaries, chiefs of police, agents—in—charge and sheriffs will be in attendance. What started with 19 teams is now capped at 270. Because of this growth the race has flourished. Today it is the largest law enforcement event of its kind in the World with teams participating from law enforcement teams throughout the United States, Calgary Canada, Berlin and Hamburg Germany, Wales, UK and our team representing the Queensland Police Service, Australia. The Baker to Vegas Relay is truly a National and International event. The Queensland team is honoured to be invited to participate in this great event and are grateful to all their supporters and sponsors especially the Queensland Police Sporting Association for their continued assistance.

CROSS COUNTRY

78 Years Young Cross Country Winner Alan Atkins

M

ichael EDWARDS and Melinda Fuller both from Ferny Grove station coordinated the Cross Country event during the 2016 Australasian Police & Emergency Services Games. 78 year old retired NSW Police member, Alan ATKINS competed in the 5km event. The last part of the race included quite a steep decent and Alan slipped and fell, throwing himself into a roll, sustaining cuts to his face from his broken spectacles and cuts to his elbow and knee which all required stitching at the Caloundra hospital. Alan managed to get back on his feet and complete the race. He was observed coming around the bend to the finish line bleeding all over. Michael and Melinda both attended the hospital after the event and presented Alan with his medallion for securing first place in his age category. Alan was such a trooper, he even returned to the hub later in the day to purchase merchandise to take home. Alan was still very keen to compete in the other events he was registered in but was advised by the attending doctor and Mrs ATKIN’S that he was done. Hera are some photos of Alan during the race, after the race with his wife and at the hospital being presented with his medal by Michael.

ANZPCC Adelaide 12-19 November 2016

T

he bi-annual Australia and New Zealand Police Cricket Championships was held in Adelaide this year from 12 to 18 November, hosted at the historic Glenelg Cricket Club. This year’s Championships saw the addition of a team from the AFP joining teams from Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, Western Australia and our friends from across the ditch and defending champions New Zealand. The team from Queensland had a good mix of youth and experience for the first time in a number of years. With the addition of an extra team to the competition, the playing format had to be tweaked slightly. Instead of each team playing each other in a 45 over match, the first day of the tournament now comprised of each team playing two 20/20 matches on the first day of the tournament and then the remaining three matches would comprise of the traditional 45 over format throughout the rest of the week. Each team would have one bye. The welcoming function was held at the Glenelg Cricket Club and it was difficult for the players not to draw inspiration from the photographs and names on the walls of some of the past famous players for the club - including the Chappell brothers. However with the rain falling heavily outside throughout the evening, many were wondering whether or not they would be able to get a game the next morning.

DAY ONE 13 November

D

ay one of the tournament saw cloudy skies with a few showers and the prospects of play looked good. Unfortunately the damage had been done overnight by the rain and there was plenty of surface water on the grounds which was preventing any play getting underway. As a result, the first round of 20/20 matches was initially declared a washout. However, thanks to the ground staff working tirelessly throughout the morning they managed to get the Glenelg oval in playing condition allowing three shortened matches to be played. The matches were reduced to 15 overs per side which meant that a win was vital to set up your chances of claiming the tournament. With the first match against NSW being washed out, Queensland were set to take on the Victorians. Victoria won the toss and not surprisingly elected to bat. With a short leg side boundary the Queenslanders were going to have to bowl tight spells if they were going to contain the Victorian batsman. They got away to the perfect start with their new opening quick Michael Vickery taking a wicket and going for no runs in his first over to have the Vics at 1 for 0.

T

he bi-annual Australia and New Zealand Police Cricket Championships was held in Adelaide The next couple of overs were also very tight and the Queenslanders were feeling confident. However the Victorian batsman started to find their form and the runs started to come. The ball sailed to and over the boundary on a number of occasions and the bowlers just couldn’t seem to get a break through. The Vics had 85 on the board after 10 overs before the next wicket fell. The final five overs saw the runs continue to flow and at the end of their innings the Vics were 2 for 149. With a small leg side boundary Queensland were confident they could chase down the total. Queensland got away to a solid start racing to 28 from 3.3 overs before losing their first wicket but the boys were on track. They continued to score well and reached 68 from 8 overs before losing their next wicket. Each time they seemed to get a bit of momentum, a wicket would fall. This pattern continued with wickets falling at regular intervals and halting the scoring.

A

t the end of their 15 overs, the Queenslanders could only manage 5/134 falling 15 runs short. The highlight of the Queensland batting innings was the return of Sgt Kieran Barton after a 6 year absence. Barto managed three consecutive 6’s to dent the Victorians confidence, before losing his off stump. So a draw and a loss to start the tournament. Not ideal but with four further matches to play in the tournament, a win in each match could see them claim the title.

DAY Two 14 November

M

onday’s game saw Queensland take on Western Australia at Glenelg oval in the first of the 45 over matches. Queensland again lost the toss and had to bowl but made the most of it getting away to the perfect start with Vickery opening with a maiden over and Queensland Captain Peter Reimers coming on from the other end taking a wicket in his first over to have WA at 1 for 2 after 2 overs. This brought the WA number three to the crease who had scored a century against Queensland in their matches in the last two tournaments. He looked quite solid right from the start and he had to be as the Queensland bowlers were amongst the wickets early and some great tight bowling from Vickery and Reimers had WA at 2 for 51 after 15 overs.

hings were going well for the Queenslanders and they were confident in the field with some great saves backing up the tight bowling and making the runs dry up. But just when things were looking good, misfortune struck with opening bowler Vickery fielding at mid-wicket taking a step to field a ball and going down in a screaming heap. Unsure of what had occurred the Queensland support staff rushed to the middle to determine the cause of the problem, whilst perennial ‘sniper victim’ Dion Bryant scoured the crowd for the unknown sniper who had cut the bowler down. Carried from the field and taken to the hospital, suspicions were confirmed later that afternoon with Vickery being diagnosed with a snapped Achilles tendon. No more cricket for him and Queensland without their number one bowler for the rest of the tournament. With one bowler down the other bowlers were going to have to step up and so they did, that was until first change bowler Jason Allard also went down with a strained groin three balls into his fifth over. The Queenslanders were now down two strike bowlers. owever the bowlers stepped up in the face of adversity and continued to apply great pressure to the WA batsman claiming wickets at regular intervals. A great spell by Shane Turner saw him claim 2 for 12 from his 9 overs which saw the WA innings grind to a halt. WA finished at 8 for 183 from their 45 overs.

ueensland, although now down on bowlers were very confident that their batsman could chase down the total. Things looked good from the start with 14 runs coming from the first two overs, but the third over saw the demise of both opening batsman. With two fresh batsman at the crease, WA had their tails up and thought they were on top. But the number 3 and 4 batsman for Queensland were rock solid and after quickly getting their eye in began to dismantle the WA attack. Captain Reimers took particular liking to one of the bowlers and appeared to find the boundary at will. Both batsman were scoring at will and put on an 83 run partnership before Ray Atkinson was surprisingly run out, with both Queensland and WA left pondering the decision. However at 3 for 101 in the 12th over, Queensland were well on their way to victory. The Queensland batsman continued to plunder the WA attack losing only one more wicket on their way to a big victory. Queensland brought up the winning runs only four wickets down in the 27th over. A comprehensive victory and a great boost to their overall run rate which was going to be needed if they were to win the tournament.

T

he end of days play saw all teams congregating at the Glenelg Cricket club for the contesting of the 3rd Razor Cup. Queensland were the current champions and had held the title since the Cups’ inception. Finishing third, the victory went to the Kiwis and for the first time ever Queensland relinquished the cup.

DAY Three 15 November

D

ay three of the tournament saw Queensland take on tournament hosts and favourites South Australia. The SACA’s had stacked their team with numerous first grad batsmen and bowlers and having the home ground was definitely working to their advantage. With their opening batsman scoring centuries in his previous two matches it was vital that Queensland put the brakes on him and the rest of the team if they were any chance of knocking off the hosts. Queensland lost yet another toss and were made to bowl. But with a plan in mind, Queensland opened the bowling with the gentle spin of

Shane Turner who had been bowling extremely well. With spin from one end and Peter Reimers bowling with pace from the other end, Queensland were confident with their bowling plan and just needed to execute it. Reimers struck in his second over and then followed it up with two more wickets in his third and fifth overs. Turner bowling at the other end totally dried up the runs and claimed his first scalp in his third over. The runs weren’t flowing and the wickets were falling but the danger man for South Australia was still at the crease and while he was still there, anything was possible. Turner then stepped up again and in his 7th over, the SACA’s opening bat attempted a lofted drive back over the bowlers head. This resulted in an excellent catch (chest mark) by returning former skipper Wayne Clayton to send him on his way. After 14 overs the SACA’s were 5 for 53 and in real trouble with their opening bat having scored 44 of those runs. The plan had been executed perfectly and the boys were very happy with their achievements. The innings was not done yet though and the SACA’s were favourites for a reason. The remaining batsman set about seeing out the overs and setting a total for Queensland to chase. Although Queensland kept claiming wickets through the previously undiscovered leg spin

talent of Matthew Gill, the runs came for the batsman until Queensland claimed the last wicket in the 44th over. South Australia all out for 153. At the lunch interval the Queensland team knew the job was only half done. They also knew that a victory in this match would see them in an excellent position to claim the Championship trophy. The SACA’s opened with their strike bowler who had previous first class experience and also played with the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash league, having bowled at speeds up to 148kmh! He claimed his first wicket with the fourth ball of his first over. Not the ideal start for Queensland but there was a long way to go. Peter Reimers joined Paul Bonney at the crease and the pair were focused on chasing down the total. Both batsman were playing well and trying to hit the opening bowler out of the attack. Looking in good form, Reimers was dismissed for 23 after the bowler held onto a sharp reflex chance. Queensland were 2 down but at 56 after only 7 overs they were still confident.

ANZPCC Adelaide 12-19 November 2016 cont .. Ray Atkinson joined Bonney at the crease and when Bonney brought up his 50 in the 14th over the Queenslanders were well and truly on track and heading for a big victory. Unfortunately Bonney fell two runs later and with that came a mini collapse with the next three batsman falling without bothering the scorer. In his first tournament, new wicket keeper batsman Matt Hendry joined Razor in the middle determined to hold up an end whilst Razor chased down the runs. The pair were batting extremely well and took the score to 6 for 129 in the 30th over. The boys only needed 15 runs from 15 overs to secure a comprehensive victory. The SACA’s with any chance of victory slipping through their fingers reached out again to their opening bowler. With the first ball of his 6th over he trapped Hendry in front and sent him on his way for a solid 14 and his job to hold up an end had been done very well. With three wickets in hand Queensland were still confident. Less so after the next ball of the over also found the edge of the bat which the keeper gratefully accepted and sent the batsman on his way. On a hat trick, the bowler charged in for his third delivery, which was a full pitched yorker and sent the bails flying. The bowler had his hat trick, Queensland had lost 3 for 0 and were still 15 runs short of victory with one wicket in hand, and Razor stranded at the non-strikers end. Enter the Queensland number 11, with the task of seeing off a fired up bowler and trying to maintain his wicket long enough to get the winning runs. The bowler charged in, the batsman faced up and the crowd heard the sound of the ball smashing into the stumps and the SACA’s cheering. The bowler claimed a double hat trick, four wickets in four balls. Queensland had lost 5 for 0 to be all out for 129 ensuring they lost the unlosable and destroyed any hope they had of claiming the title. With an innings that saw 7 ducks the Queensland boys were wondering how they had let it slip away, but celebrated the match in the right spirit til all hours.

DAY FIVE 17 November

D

Photo picturing: Det Sgt Col Harvey

Rest Day Wednesday saw the Queenslanders have the bye. With some of the team electing to rest their fatigued bodies or take the opportunity to get a massage on their aching muscles. Other members decided it was a great chance to sample some of what South Australia has to offer and took part in a wine tour throughout the Barossa Valley. It was a great day enjoyed by all with the highlight of the day being the private tour undertaken at Penfolds winery capped off with a tasting of a 1983 bottle of Grange – thanks Gilly!

ay five of the tournament saw Queensland take on the AFP at Marion oval. The newcomers had yet to record a victory and with no chance of winning the tournament, Queensland took the opportunity to give some of their fringe players a run and tinker with the bowling order. Queensland finally won a toss and on a stinking hot day and small ground took the opportunity to have a bat. The team got off to a solid start but lost their first wicket, Life Member Colin Frederick Harvey, in the fourth over with the score on 39. This brought Reimers to the crease to team up with Paul Bonney. The pair set about totally dismantling the AFP attack and appeared to be having a competition with each other to see who could hit the biggest six.

ANZPCC Adelaide 12-19 November 2016 cont ..

This competition intensified with both players closing in fast on a century and it was a race to see who would get to the milestone first. Bonney in his chase for glory was dismissed for 90 when he danced down the pitch looking to launch the spinner back over his head but was deceived by the spin and was stumped. A great innings though as Queensland reached 2/137 in the 14th over. The runs kept coming though and another partnership then developed between Reimers and Atkinson both players continued to tear apart the AFP attack with the ball sailing over the boundary with relentless monotony. After a flurry Photo picturing: Sgt Phil Bell of big sixes, Atkinson was eventually dismissed for 83 caught on the boundary. Reimers however managed to carry his bat and at the end of the 45 overs Queensland had amassed 416 runs with Reimers unbeaten on 160. ueensland were confident, but on a small ground anything was possible and with the temperature pushing 38 degrees it was going to be a long afternoon in the field. Queensland opened the bowling with a couple of change bowlers and the AFP got off to a great start, making it to 87 in the 15th over before they lost their first wicket. They then made it to 110 before they lost their next wicket but after that the wickets began to fall at regular intervals. The opening batsman for the AFP however maintained his composure and continued to punish any loose deliveries Photo picturing: former S/C Dan Field accumulating 83 before he was brilliantly run out by a handy piece of fielding with a direct hit finding him well short of his ground. The AFP were ultimately all out in the 43rd over for 232. Dan Field for Queensland provided a couple of highlights for the day. Apart from bowling 21 wides in his 9 over spell, five coming in one over, he also attained a unique double. Fieldy managed to score a 6 whilst batting and also give away a 6 while bowling with neither ball going over the boundary on the full – overthrows whilst batting and throwing the ball at the fielding helmet whilst bowling! Not an easy feat to achieve and only someone like Fieldy could do it.

Q

DAY six 18th November

T

he final match of the tournament saw Queensland take on old rivals - the Kiwis - at Park 25. This match is always played in good spirits but is extremely competitive, with both teams keen to get the edge over each other. With neither side a chance of winning the tournament a decision was made to make the game a 20/20 match so that there would be an early finish to the day giving players time to prepare for the closing function. ueensland won the toss and elected to bat. The opening batsman were on fire early and raced to 86 after only 7 overs before they lost their first wicket. After that the scoring slowed a little however the boys continued to swing. Runs came but so did the wickets. Bonney and Reimers got the scoreboard ticking over again reaching 62 and 42 respectively. However the continuous loss of wickets kept stifling any momentum. At the end of the 20 overs, Queensland had reached 9 for 186. A very competitive total which meant the Kiwis were going to have to work hard for a victory. New Zealand got off to the perfect start racing to 33 in the third over before then losing 2 wickets which put the brakes on things. After 10 overs they had reached 3 for 98 and were on track for a victory. Queensland knew they had to take wickets if they wanted to win. They managed to grab a couple more but the Kiwis weren’t going to give up. The Kiwis were on track when they lost their fifth wicket in the 15th over with the score on 147. Needing 40 runs in the final 5 overs, to secure a victory the pressure was on. The Kiwis maintained their composure and weren’t going to let it come down to the last over. With the final ball of the 19th over they hit the winning runs to snatch a victory.

CRICKET CLOSING

W

ith the Championships completed all that was left was for the teams to attend the closing function at the historic Adelaide oval. A magnificent setting with all teams making the most of the location posing for photographs under the scoreboard in the fading afternoon light.

T

he teams were kept entertained at dinner by guest speaker and former Australian wicket keeper Wayne Phillips regaling all with amusing anecdotes of his time as a player and coach for Australia and South Australia. The function saw the crowning of South Australia as the winners of the tournament and the naming of the combined ANZPCC team. Two Queensland players Peter Reimers and Paul Bonney were rewarded for their excellent efforts throughout the tournament by being named in the team. New South Wales were then announced as the host for the next tournament in 2018. Another successful ANZPCC tournament was completed with all teams partaking in some fantastic cricket and enjoying some great fellowship, renewing old acquaintances and forging new friendships. The tournament was played in great spirits and enjoyed by all. Particular thanks goes out to the following organisations who assisted the Queensland Police Cricket Association with vital support to attend these Championships: • Queensland Police Union of Employees • Queensland Police Sporting Association • Ostwald Brothers • Total Contract Services

• South City Mazda • MCG Legal • Multitrade • Zarraffa’s Coffee Southport

LAWN BOWLS

T

he Lawn Bowls competition had five events – three Open events, and two Novice events with an overall registration of 118 players participating. All events were strongly contested, and by end of the week, many new friendships had been formed, with promises to catch up again at other bowls events. All Australian State and Territories were represented, as well as players from New Zealand What’s in a Name

One of the early team registrations came from four AFP fellows – Erico Kusnandar, Gerard Cahill, Nicholas Jack and Jordan Dowling. They showed some imagination in their team name selection by calling themselves “Irritable Bowls Syndrome (IBS)”. These fellows thoroughly enjoyed their time at the Games and won the Bronze medal in the Novice Fours competition. The medals were presented by Judith Wright (Sports Coordinator) – photos attached.

The “Tassie” Grass Cutters The Novice section had a Ladies Police team that kept everyone in fits of laughter, and enjoyment. They were the most popular team at the Lawn Bowls - with other players and club patrons alike. The Ladies created such laughter and fun during the week, that it raised the social atmosphere for all. This typified the spirit of participation at the Games. A special award was sent to their OIC (Sgt Peter May) in Hobart, and the Police Commissioner Darren Hine arranged an afternoon tea for the Ladies to present them with their awards. Special thanks to Rowena Watling, Mel Thomas, Rebecca Wozniak, Alison Woolley and Alison Kay for your special contribution to the Games.

7 Queensland Medal Winners Line up for Australian Police Bowls Championships The Queensland Police Bowls Club (QPBC) was well represented at the AP&ES Games, and seven of the medal winners will also be playing for the Queensland team in the Australian Police Bowls Championships (APBC) at Caloundra in March 2017. Those involved are – Matt Tonkin (Singles - Gold); Dan Moore (Pairs – Gold; Singles – Bronze); Terry Little & Clint Turner (Pairs – Silver); Russell Harber & Darren Taylor (Pairs – Bronze); Neville Ingram (Fours – Bronze). Well done Queenslanders.

Nadine’s First Win Sergeant Nadine Webster (DCPC Yamanto) only took up bowls about a year ago, and joined the QPBC, and her local Rosewood Bowls Club. When she heard about the AP&ES Games, she thought what a great opportunity to be involved seeing that the Games were being held in her home State, Queensland. Her excitement resulted in an early registration for the Games – in all three Open events. Next, it was time to get in some practice at Rosewood – this lady was serious about the Games. A partner was found for the Pairs and a team for the Fours, and she was ready to go. Despite not having any wins in the Pairs, she continued with enthusiasm in the Fours, where her team won their first game, but had close losses after that. Next, the Singles, and this time, Nadine was on her own, and four hard games in front of her. Regardless of the result, Nadine came off the green with the same smile on her face. And then it happened, in her second last game, Nadine had her first singles win when she beat a Victorian Corrections Officer – 9 shots to 7 and winning 6 of the 10 ends. That made her week, and she was on “cloud nine”. Congratulations Nadine. Last Minute Entries It was late September, and registrations were about to close, and two more players were needed to make up a team. Sports Coordinator, Alex Wright contacted two QPBC members, to see if they would fill the vacancies in the Open Fours. Liz Little and Neville Ingram both agreed to play, and they were matched up with Melbourne Firies John Garvin and Chris Trevean. The end result was that they won Bronze, proving that single entries, placed into a team, can win medals.

Close Finishes The finals series of the Open Fours event resulted in close finishes in all games. Both semi-finals games resulted in draws, needing an extra end to be played to decide winners. Then in the play-off for Bronze, it was another drawn game and an extra end before the team of Liz Little, Nev Ingram, Chris Trevean and John Garvin collected the Bronze. No one was more excited than Liz Little, as her husband Terry had already collected Silver in the Pairs.

POWERLIFTING So what is powerlifting..?

P

owerlifting is an individualised sport compromising of squat, bench press, and deadlift. It is training for strength using a barbell and with the three lifts combined uses virtually every muscle in the body. There are two types of powerlifting, Raw and Equipped (Means the athlete wears support equipment to lift). In competition every lifter is allowed the opportunity to attempt each lift three times and the winner is determined by the sum of their best lifts – Squat + Bench + Deadlift = Total. I have been competing in powerlifting for 20 months now. I started out in crossfit as a way to get my fitness and strength back after having 2 girls and quickly fell in love with lifting heavy weights. I train 5 to 6 days juggling session around shifts. I have a complete set up at home so I can lift at any time. I am also coached and supported by Tempered Barbell Clun Ormeau. In my first year of lifting I took out the Australian deadlift record twice. This year I have focused on gaining strength and made the move to move up a weight class in order to do so. I am currently ranked 4th in Australia in the 63 kilo open category. I compete under Powerlifting Australia as they are the only powerlifting body in Australia to be recognised by the Australian Sports Commission and the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Agency. In October this year I was selected on the Australia Team to represent the country at the Asia/Oceania Powerlifting Championships in Christchurch New Zealand. I will travel to New Zealand in December.

A

t present my totals are 145kilos for the squat, 77.5kilos for the bench press and 170kilos for the deadlift. My plan for New Zealand is to increase my current total to over 400kilos. S/Const Heidi Kearns represented Australia at the Asia/Oceania Championships in New Zealand between December 4-11 2016.
