One of the aspects I cherish most about Bethany College is the way our community comes alive through the people who make it their own. Every day, I am reminded that our strength and spirit are not found in buildings or programs alone, but in the students who challenge themselves to grow, the faculty who guide them with wisdom and care, and the alumni and trustees who carry Bethany’s values into the wider world.

“Faces of Bethany” shines a spotlight on these individuals and the many ways they shape our community.

From mentorship in the classroom to leadership in their professions, each story reflects a shared commitment to investing time, talent, and passion in something greater than themselves.

Together, these stories highlight what makes Bethany distinctive: a community defined by connection, purpose, and a belief in one another’s potential.

The Place That Became

A SECOND HOME For DR. SCOTT BROTHERS, Bethany College has long felt like home—even before it became his professional home.

Though growing up in Ohio, Scott’s academic roots were firmly planted in Wheeling. He earned his Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Wheeling, formerly Jesuit, University in 2005, before heading south to earn his Ph.D. in chemistry from Texas A&M University in 2011.

His connection to Bethany began early. “Being from the area, I actually interviewed for a scholarship at Bethany in the winter of 2000, which was my first time visiting this beautiful campus,” he said. During his undergraduate years, several close friends attended Bethany, and one held an executive role in Delta Tau Delta, giving Scott frequent opportunities to experience campus life firsthand. “Even though Bethany College is not my alma mater, my connection to this college has always been very deep.”

That connection became official in 2012, when Scott joined the faculty as an assistant professor of chemistry.

“The school remains as special as it was for me as an undergraduate,” he said. Scott is now a professor of chemistry and the director of the Kalon Scholars Program.

Scott teaches across a wide range of the chemistry curriculum, including general chemistry, organic chemistry I & II, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, green chemistry, and writing for chemistry. He also previously directed the Bethany First Year Experience (BFYE) and regularly taught first-year seminars, an experience he describes as especially meaningful. “It’s a great pipeline to get to meet and to welcome new students to the Bethany community,” he noted.

Much of Scott’s passion lies in hands-on learning.

“I really enjoy the laboratory experiences and getting to watch the students develop skills,” he said, especially

when students begin to see their own growth. In inorganic chemistry, students participate in self-designed projects, often planting the seeds for senior capstone work and undergraduate research.

“At a small school like Bethany, I have students from foundational, first-year courses, to capstone senior courses, and many things in between,” Scott said. That continuity allows him to build meaningful relationships and watch students mature academically and personally.

“Dr. Brothers [is a] great professor, [and has a] great teaching style. I feel like I learn a lot [from him], and he’s just a professor that you know is always there for you,” said Leah Dunmire ‘27, Bethany College biology major.

Scott also speaks passionately about one of Bethany’s most distinctive traditions: Comprehensive Exams. “This tradition truly makes Bethany exceptional,” he said. “It gets students, faculty, alumni, and administration engaged on campus to truly celebrate student accomplishment.”

While the process can be intimidating, he believes its benefits are unmatched. “The experience is amazing, cannot be truly replicated, and sets Bethany apart from other schools like it.”

When advising students considering chemistry, Scott emphasizes flexibility and exploration. “Not everyone knows their path directly, and that is totally okay,” he said.

He encourages students to explore multiple disciplines, pursue minors, and remain open to unexpected callings.

“I’ve seen future doctors working in industry, mathminded research chemists become biochemists, and students without ever thinking about teaching being called to the classroom.”

“The chemistry major, and Bethany itself,” Scott concluded, “allows you that space to really become a well-rounded and successful individual.”

NATIONAL STAGE When EVELYN DEL CERRO ‘85 arrived at Bethany College in the fall of 1981, she carried with her the determined spirit of a New Yorker ready to build something meaningful. Born and raised in New York City, she quickly found her place among the campus’ tight-knit community, immersing herself in student media, athletics, and leadership, all experiences that would propel her into a distinguished career in broadcast journalism.

At Bethany, Evelyn embraced every opportunity to learn, grow, and lead. She joined Zeta Tau Alpha, played on the softball team, contributed to “The Tower” newspaper, and became an active member of the Women in Communications collegiate chapter. But it was behind the microphone and soundboard at WVBC, the College’s radio station, where she found her calling.

In 2003, she transitioned to WABC, the local ABC affiliate in New York, where she now oversees local programming, FCC compliance, and music rights and licensing. Her work contributes to producing the nationally beloved daytime show, “Live with Kelly and Mark,” Evelyn’s leadership and creativity have earned her five New York Emmy Awards for programming focused on breast cancer awareness and child protection.

She served as the station’s student manager and hosted a weekly radio show, “The Magic Bus,” sparking a love for broadcasting that would guide her professional life. “I have so many favorite things about my time at Bethany,” Evelyn shared, “but if I had to narrow it down, I would say my time at WVBC, the life-long friends I made, my Comps experience, and the impact so many faculty members had on my development and my career.”

Evelyn came to Bethany for a degree and left with lifelong connections and a sense of purpose. “I believe that Bethany was not just a college I attended but rather a nurturing community that I lived in while attending college,” she said. “I credit so much of my successes to my Bethany experience.”

That foundation led her to ABC/Disney in 1988, marking the beginning of an extraordinary career. She started in the publishing division before serving 12 years as an E.N.G. production manager for “World News Tonight with Peter Jennings.” During that time, she helped cover some of the most defining news moments in modern history, including the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. For her role in the coverage, she earned both a George Foster Peabody Award and a DuPont-Columbia Award, two of journalism’s

Even as her career soared, she stayed connected to the place where it all began. Since graduating in 1985, Evelyn has been a constant presence in Bethany’s communication community, serving as an inaugural member of the Communications Wall of Fame, speaking in classes, leading as the Grand Marshal of the 2010 Homecoming parade, keynoting the 2012 Keresty Lectures in Journalism, participating in the 2023 Bethany Connect Speaker Series, and moderating the 2025 Women in Leadership Symposium panel on networking. In January 2024, she joined the Bethany College Board of Trustees, continuing her service to the institution she credits with launching her journey.

“I stayed in touch with several of my professors for many years,” she noted, reflecting on the lifelong mentorships and friendships built in Bethany’s hills.

More than 40 years after arriving on campus, Evelyn del Cerro remains a shining example of what it means to be a Bethanian, grounded in community, driven by curiosity, and committed to elevating others. Her broadcast career, marked by excellence and impact, began with a college radio microphone in West Virginia and grew into a legacy that continues to inspire future generations of Bethany students.

In the classroom, Kathy aims to inspire curiosity and a deeper appreciation for the natural world. “I hope my students grow an enthusiasm for the wonder of nature from the perspective of a biologist,” she said. “I hope they gain enough knowledge of the mysteries of living organisms to want to know more.”

She also works to keep her courses relevant and engaging by connecting material to students’ future careers. “To keep students engaged, I use examples relevant to the chosen career fields of my students,” she explained. “Many of my students are majoring in, or have an interest in, exercise science, pre-med, animal science, nursing, pre-PT, and conservation biology. We discuss examples of real-world research studies, new tech, medical conditions, and current environmental challenges.”

For Kathy, what makes Bethany truly special is the sense of community—a perspective shaped by her experience as both a student and a faculty member.

“My favorite part about Bethany is being immersed in a community that is focused on student education and student personal growth,” she said. “The community of Bethany: the College and town, are committed to support the students. Bethany thrives because we all work together toward student success.”

For DR. KATHY BAKER-BROSH ’86, Bethany College has been a defining part of her life. As both an alumna and a professor, her journey reflects a deep connection to the College and its mission of student success.

That connection began during her undergraduate years, when she first discovered her passion for teaching.

“From the time I was an undergraduate student, I knew I wanted to be a professor,” she said. “I thought teaching a subject I love while living in a walkable college community surrounded by music, theatre productions, the library, sports, arts, and academics all within a college town would be a fabulous lifestyle.”

Today, Baker-Brosh has come full circle, now teaching and mentoring students in the same environment that once inspired her. Her enthusiasm for her work is clear.

“I absolutely enjoy my job. The best part is working with students to achieve goals,” she said.

One of the most meaningful aspects of her role is mentoring student research. “Mentoring research projects is my favorite part of being a professor at Bethany.

Working with students as they design their projects, work through data collection, and prepare written reports and posters and presentations is satisfying,” she said. “I like

As an alumna who returned to give back, Kathy’s story proves the lasting impact of a Bethany education, and the meaningful role faculty play in shaping the next generation.

CALLED TO SERVE REV. TODD A. ADAMS, D.Min., serves as the president and chief executive officer of Pension Fund of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), which manages $3.8B in retirement assets for pastors and church employees, including many current and retired Bethany employees.

Since joining the organization a decade ago, Adams has overseen a $1.2 billion increase in assets while distributing more than $2 billion in benefits to members and retirees. A lifelong member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), he grew up attending Bethany Christian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Adams has served as a trustee of Bethany College since 2020 and co-chairs the College’s Investment Committee. We asked him to reflect on his “why”—why he chooses to serve and how his journey remains deeply connected to Bethany College.

“It seems at every pivotal moment of my life, there is a Bethany College connection – a leader raised and shaped by the church and educated on this sacred mountain or an event hosted in the Village,” shared Todd. He fell in love with Bethany College as a rising high school junior. In 1988, Bethany hosted the Youth Ministry Congress for the Christian Church, bringing together young leaders from around the United States and Canada. During the youth gathering, Todd was elected to serve on the General Youth Council (GYC) for the denomination, which led to other leadership opportunities and nurtured Adams’s call to ministry and service to the church.

Adams later returned to the College as a camp counselor while serving as the senior minister of Madison Avenue Christian Church in Huntington, West Virginia. Rev. Dr. Thaddaeus Allen ’92 invited Todd to serve as part of the high school camp staff. “There is just something about walking where Alexander Campbell walked, taught, and served that is sacred. And who does not love a good sandwich from Chambers?”

The next transition in Todd’s ministry had another connection to Bethany, as Jay Smith ’71 chaired the search committee for Memorial Drive Christian Church in Houston, Texas, which called Todd as the senior minister. During his tenure from 2001 to 2007, the church grew by over 300 members and increased its giving by over $700,000. Additionally, they built a $2.8 million sanctuary and strengthened their ties to the surrounding community.

In 2012, Bethany College honored Todd with an honorary Doctor of Divinity in recognition of his dedicated service to the denomination. He preached the first of two baccalaureate services, encouraging students to not compromise their ethics and integrity as they entered the professional world. At the time, Todd was serving as the associate general minister and vice president of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada. He delivered his second baccalaureate sermon in 2024, following the unexpected passing of beloved Bethany trustee

Janet Long ’71. In this sermon, he urged graduates to leave the mountain and lead with love.

In his many church leadership roles, Todd was appointed to serve as the interim president of the Disciples of Christ Historical Society. In this dual role, he collaborated with several Bethanians, including Rev. Peter and Lynne Rollins Morgan ‘61, Marsha Peters Smith ’73, as well as Board of Trustee members Thomas and Asa Johnson, Bob Renner ’48, and Thaddaeus Allen ‘92.

This partnership transformed the Renner Visitor’s Center into the offices and archival facilities for the Disciples of Christ Historical Society and relocated the T.W. Phillips building from Nashville, Tennessee, to Bethany Village. Todd reflected on this experience, stating, “Relocating the archives of the church and reconnecting them to the original ground where Campbell shaped ideas and thoughts that created this movement was a unique opportunity to weave together the fabric of our history with its physical location.” Adams often jokes that two interims signed a 99-year ground lease binding the institutions together, as Sven de Jong ’95 signed on behalf of the College while serving as interim president.

“Even though I am not an alumnus of the College, serving as a trustee is a way of giving back to this sacred mountain that has been pivotal at so many moments in my life. I truly believe that this small college of national distinction is shaping leaders for the church and the world, who have shaped me” he shared. Todd challenges all Bethanians to believe the future of the College is strong if we are all pulling in the same direction and generously supporting Bethany. “As trustees, we face challenging decisions regularly, but our primary goal is upholding Campbell’s vision of fostering an informed and educated society while also focusing on the next decade of developing leaders.”

Todd and his husband, Greg, reside in Indianapolis, Indiana. They have two adult children: Claire, an instructional math coach in San Francisco, California, and Jackson, a commercial banker in Indianapolis.

in the Biotech World When MICHELLE CHEN ’91 arrived at Bethany College, she found herself in an environment that encouraged curiosity, exploration, and a sense of purpose.

Those values have guided her ever since, and today, they’re at the heart of her work leading one of the most innovative biotechnology companies in the world.

Michelle, a 1991 Bethany graduate, serves as the Chief Business Officer at Insilico Medicine, a global leader in artificial intelligence-driven drug discovery. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, she oversees corporate strategy, business development, and U.S. operations for a company that uses generative AI to design and develop new therapeutics, technology that has the potential to transform how medicines are discovered and delivered to patients worldwide.

Her journey from the rolling hills of Bethany to the frontiers of biotech innovation reflects both scientific excellence and a human-centered approach to leadership.

After earning her degree from Bethany, Michelle went on to complete a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Washington and postdoctoral training at the University of California, San Francisco, later pursuing bioinformatics studies at Stanford University. She has since built a distinguished career spanning both large pharmaceutical organizations and emerging biotech firms, including Roche, Merck & Co., and BioMarin Pharmaceutical.

“I really cherished my time at Bethany, where I spent many hours in Richardson Hall, Old Main, and the Bethany House,” said Michelle “Not only did Bethany provide me with a strong liberal arts foundation and the opportunity to learn from exceptional, caring professors, but it also allowed me to build lasting friendships with students who were genuinely curious about other cultures

and the world beyond our campus. Bethany was a very special chapter in my life.”

At Insilico Medicine, Michelle’s leadership has been instrumental in forging strategic partnerships. Among them, a groundbreaking collaboration with Sanofi valued at more than $1 billion. Her ability to bridge science and business has earned her recognition as one of the Top 25 Biotechnology Executives of 2024 by “The Healthcare Technology Report.”

Despite her global reach, Michelle has remained deeply connected to her alma mater. In 2024, she joined the Bethany College Board of Trustees, bringing with her a wealth of experience in science, technology, and international leadership. Through this role, she hopes to inspire current students to see the power of a liberal-arts education as a foundation for innovation and purposedriven work.

“Leadership isn’t just about results—it’s about the ‘why’ behind what we do,” Michelle shared in “The Enterprise World.” “For me, that ‘why’ has always been about helping people live healthier lives through science and collaboration.”

Whether she’s negotiating international partnerships, mentoring young professionals, or helping guide Bethany’s future, Michelle embodies what it means to lead with purpose—a value she traces all the way back to her days on campus.

Her story reminds us that the impact of a Bethany education can reach far beyond the classroom, sometimes all the way to the front lines of global innovation.

When DR. DAVE DIOSI talks about his path to Bethany College, his story reflects both deep roots in the Ohio Valley and a lifelong commitment to teaching. Born and raised in St. Clairsville, Ohio, Dave grew up not far from Bethany’s campus, but his academic journey took him across several states and institutions before ultimately bringing him back home. He earned his B.S. in marketing with a minor in geography from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, continued to complete his MBA at Wheeling (then Jesuit) University, and later achieved his Ph.D. in instructional management and leadership from Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh.

Before joining Bethany full-time, Dave spent nearly two decades as an adjunct instructor at Wheeling Jesuit, balancing teaching with professional work in business and leadership. In 2018, he accepted a position at Bethany as a visiting instructor of business, an opportunity that allowed him to bring his passion for business education to a closeknit, student-focused campus where meaningful relationships are part of daily life. Today, he serves as an associate professor of business, teaching a wide range of undergraduate and MBA courses that span entrepreneurship, organizational behavior, international business, marketing, management, human resources, and more.

What stands out when Dave talks about teaching is the genuine enthusiasm he brings to every class, whether it’s a foundational course like principles of management or a specialized MBA topic like global marketing. He believes that business is a discipline built on connection between concepts, cultures, strategies, and people, and he enjoys helping students see how each topic can be linked to enhance

organizational performance and personal success. “The students I’ve had at Bethany, both in-person and online, show a real passion for learning,” he said. “Watching them understand how each part of a course can ‘connect’ to maximize efficiency and success is incredibly rewarding.”

For Dave, some of his most meaningful moments at Bethany come from witnessing students grow into confident thinkers and leaders. He takes pride in seeing students who may have doubted themselves early on to find their footing, push past their own expectations, and excel by the time they graduate. “Every new class I teach is another chapter added to my great experiences at Bethany,” he shared. “The students are what make this job meaningful.”

What makes Bethany’s learning environment special, he believes, is the genuine care woven into every corner of campus. He describes a community where faculty and staff consistently go out of their way to help students, no matter the major, year, or circumstance. “We may be a small campus, but the people here have big hearts,” he said. “I’m not aware of a single individual at Bethany who wouldn’t take the time to help a student in need.”

When offering advice to students, especially those exploring the world of business, Dave emphasizes the importance of choosing a career that brings joy and purpose. “Most of your adult life will be spent working to support yourself and your family,” he said. “So find subjects that interest you early. If you enjoy biology, explore careers within that discipline. If business sparks your curiosity, you may just find your calling in one of my classes.”

Whether he’s guiding students through the complexities of organizational behavior or helping an MBA cohort navigate global marketing trends, Dave brings compassion, expertise, and a deep belief in every student’s potential. His journey may have started in eastern Ohio, but it’s now at Bethany College, surrounded by a community that shares his commitment to personal growth and lifelong learning.

A GLOBAL PATH, A Purpose-Driven Perspective

When STEVEN BUTSCHI walks across the historic brick paths of Bethany College, he brings with him a perspective shaped by continents, industries, and innovation. Though not an alumnus, he has become a deeply engaged member of the Bethany community, one whose global experiences and professional leadership reflect the curiosity and commitment that define so many Bethanians.

Raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Steven set his sights far beyond his hometown early on. College took him to the East Coast, and an immersive year abroad in Paris expanded his worldview even further. Those experiences sparked a lifelong fascination with culture, learning, and the power of connection. After graduating from Brown University, during the difficult job market of 2008, he spent a summer leading sixteen teenagers across France, teaching them language and confidence along the way.

His early career began in research consulting for Fortune 500 companies, a path that ultimately led to an unexpected opportunity at Google. What he initially imagined would be a short-term role, has grown into a remarkable 16-year journey at one of the world’s most influential technology companies. Today, Steven serves as Google’s director of the North American Google education go-to-market and partnerships team, helping school districts, universities, and colleges leverage tools like Google

Workspace and Chromebooks to personalize learning and improve access for students of all backgrounds.

Throughout his tenure, Steven has played a pivotal role in bringing Google Apps and Chromebooks into classrooms across K–12 and higher education. His leadership became even more impactful during the COVID-19 pandemic, when millions of students and educators relied on tools like Meet, Docs, Analytics, and Data Studio to stay connected, collaborate remotely, and keep learning moving forward during unprecedented disruption. For Steven, this work isn’t just technological; it’s deeply human. It’s about expanding opportunities, reducing barriers, and supporting the people who shape the future every day.

That same focus on people is what draws him to Bethany. “Every time I step on campus, I can feel the sense of community,” he shared. “People genuinely care about one another, and when alums come together, there’s a camaraderie that’s truly special.” The rolling hills, the forests, and the close-knit spirit remind him that true strength comes from relationships.

Serving on the Bethany College Board of Trustees has broadened his approach to leadership, offering a new lens for evaluating mission-driven work. “There are so many angles to consider when making a decision, how it affects the mission, the financials, the culture,” he said.

“I’m grateful to work with a board that asks thoughtful questions and is committed to helping Bethany be the best institution it can be.”

From guiding global education initiatives at Google to helping shape the future of Bethany College, Steven’s story is grounded in growth, service, and the belief that learning should always be within reach. His journey, spanning worldwide, is a reminder that communities aren’t just a place. They’re a purpose.

Originally from Weirton, West Virginia, DR. CHELSEY FLETCHER’s connection to Bethany College began long before her career in higher education. “I fell in love with Bethany when my brother was touring colleges in 1990,” she said. After years of persistence and the right opportunity, she joined the faculty—where she has spent the past six years teaching, mentoring, and growing alongside her students.

Chelsey brings a diverse academic background to Bethany, holding a Ph.D. in Instructional Management & Leadership from Robert Morris University, a master’s degree from West Virginia University, and a bachelor’s degree from Muskingum College. At Bethany, she teaches across the Sport Management and Recreational Athletic Administrations Coaching Education (RAACE) programs, as well as graduate courses, engaging students in a wide range of learning experiences.

The most rewarding part of her role is rooted in student growth, “without a doubt, what I enjoy most about the classes are our students,” she said. “Each time I get to be a part of a student realizing their own potential and then meeting and exceeding it, it does not get any better than that!”

She believes Bethany’s learning environment is defined by its people. “Our students make us special. We are gritty and diverse,” Chelsey said, emphasizing the collaborative culture that allows students to thrive.

Her advice to students reflects that same mindset: “Seek self-awareness and absolutely immerse yourself into our curriculum…

Allow yourself to be vulnerable and become comfortable with being uncomfortable.”

Through her dedication to teaching and mentorship, Chelsey continues to empower students to grow, lead, and reach their full potential.

Teaching, Mentorship, and the

BETHANY WAY

When DR. LISA REILLY arrived at Bethany, she was beginning her career rooted in curiosity, connection, and the joy of watching students grow. Originally from Franklin, Pennsylvania, Lisa earned her Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Mercyhurst University before completing her Ph.D. in analytical chemistry at Oklahoma State University. After a research post-doctoral experience, she knew her heart was set not on the lab bench alone, but on teaching.

“I started to look for a primarily undergraduate institution because I knew I wanted to go into teaching,” she reflected. Bethany quickly stood out. After interviewing on campus, meeting students, faculty, and staff, she knew it stood out. She accepted the offer, and, as she puts it, “the rest is history.”

Lisa teaches everything from general chemistry to advanced coursework, and even statistics at times. What she enjoys most isn’t tied to a specific subject, but to a specific moment, “teaching any course is about working to see a student’s ‘light bulb’ go on when they learn something new,” she said. Whether it’s demonstrating natural indicators like red cabbage or guiding students through complex atomic modeling, she thrives on the instant when a student looks up and says, “I got it,” and then proves it on the next problem. “That is the enjoyment of teaching,” she said.

One of her most meaningful experiences has been shepherding students from their earliest days to capstone completion. Many of her first-year students return to work with her on senior research, comprehensive exams, and graduation prep. “Experiencing their growth from first-year student to being ready to start their next chapter is impactful,” she said. She gets to see the full arc from tentative problem-solving to confident scientific reasoning, and that continuity fuels her dedication.

That continuity extends beyond academics, too. Lisa believes Bethany’s special character comes from truly knowing students. She doesn’t just teach them in the classroom, but she also cheers for them on athletic fields, attends performances, visits exhibitions, and shows up at student-led events. Those encounters, she believes, are part of the education.

“The focus on knowing your students is what is special,” she said, and for Lisa, that means meeting the whole person, not just the major declared on paper.

Today, Lisa serves as an associate professor of chemistry, holds the Goulding-Woolery professorship in chemistry, and serves as both chair and associate provost, shaping academic life at Bethany in both the classroom and the administrative wing. Her workload is broad, but her philosophy is simple: students come first.

When MATT DONAHUE ‘02 arrived at Bethany College, he was searching for a place where he could grow, lead, and challenge himself. What he found was the perfect combination of opportunity and community. Drawn by the competitive financial aid package and the promise of individualized experiences, Matt chose Bethany as the place where he would shape his future.

As a psychology major, Matt loved exploring how people think, behave, and make decisions. “I enjoyed learning about the human mind in an academic and research sense,” he shared. That curiosity paired naturally with his growing interest in service and justice — interests strengthened through the roles he took on across campus.

Matt threw himself into Bethany life, as he joined the Sigma Nu fraternity, competed on the cross country and track teams, served in Student Government, and even volunteered with the Bethany Volunteer Fire Department. Each experience added a layer of confidence and responsibility, preparing him for a life committed to public service.

After graduating in 2002, Matt pursued a career in law, one that would see him take on some of Ohio’s most critical legal roles. He began as an assistant county prosecutor before joining the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, where he served as a prosecutor and later became section chief of the Special Prosecutions Section. Today, he is the chief legal counsel for Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, a role rooted in leadership, integrity, and a deep understanding of the justice system.

Looking back, Matt sees Bethany as the place that helped him discover his potential. “Bethany gave me individualized opportunities that encouraged me to connect with people and step into leadership,” he said.

For students considering a similar path, his advice is straightforward and heartfelt: “Keep at it. If you know where you want to practice law, go to law school in that geographic area. And with the rise of AI in the legal profession, make sure you’re willing to be a courtroom lawyer, and willing to know how to connect with people.”

Bethany’s liberal arts foundation taught me how to think, adapt, problem-solve, and take on new challenges.

When ASHLEY SUBASIC ’06, MAT ’12 first set foot on Bethany’s campus, she wasn’t looking for a small liberal arts college, but she took advice from her high school scholarship coordinator, who told her Bethany had an exceptional education program. One visit to campus was all it took. The location, the close-knit community, and the possibilities for growth convinced her she was exactly where she needed to be.

Ashley arrived with a clear vision: she loved history, especially the Civil War era, and she dreamed of teaching it. She initially double-majored in education and history, but in an early conversation with her advisor, Dr. Gary Kappel ‘74, they reshaped her plans. When she shared her interest in becoming a college professor, he explained that she only needed an undergraduate degree in the field of study to teach at the collegiate level, so she shifted to a history major, setting the foundation for the path ahead.

On campus, Ashley joined Zeta Tau Alpha and played intramural sports, embracing the balance of academics, leadership, and community involvement that defines the liberal arts experience. “Looking back, I wish I had been even more involved,” she said. “Bethany offers so many opportunities to grow as a person, not just as a student.”

After graduating with her B.A. in history in 2006, Ashley returned to Bethany for the inaugural cohort of the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program, earning her degree in 2012. Today, her career is a tapestry of roles

enriched by the adaptability, curiosity, and broad skill set she attributes to her liberal arts education. She serves as the billing & construction coordinator for an architecture and engineering firm in Wheeling, WV, works part-time for a seasonal museum, and teaches West Virginia history and geography as an adjunct instructor at Bethany.

“My current position is something I didn’t have formal training in,” Ashley said. “But Bethany’s liberal arts foundation taught me how to think, adapt, problem-solve, and take on new challenges. That’s what prepared me.”

To students hoping to follow a similar path, she offers heartfelt advice to get involved, try new things, and be open to discovering unexpected passions.

“You may not know exactly what you want while you’re at Bethany, and that’s okay,” she shared. “Use your time here to explore. What you think you’re meant for might change, and sometimes that’s where the best opportunities come from.”

FOSTERING A PASSION for the Human Mind

When you meet DR. JOHN ROMANEK, you immediately sense the steady passion he brings to the study of human behavior. As a native of Wheeling, West Virginia, Dr. Romanek has spent his career exploring what shapes the mind, motivates behavior, and fuels personal growth.

Dr. Romanek joined Bethany College after discovering the faculty position online, quickly recognizing the institution’s long-standing reputation for academic excellence. His path to Bethany was shaped by a strong academic foundation, including a B.A. in psychology from Wheeling Jesuit College (now Wheeling University), followed by an M.A. in clinical psychology from Marshall University, and ultimately a Ph.D. in general psychology from Northcentral University. Though he had visited campus only a few times before interviewing, he felt the depth of Bethany’s history and community right away. “I felt very honored, and still do, to have been offered the position of associate professor and department chair of psychology,” he shared.

In the classroom, Dr. Romanek teaches a wide range of courses including general psychology, personality theories, abnormal psychology, and behavior modification, with learning theories joining his course lineup in Fall 2026.

For him, the joy of teaching lies in the energy of engaged students. “What I most enjoy is being able to share my love of this discipline with others,” he said. “It’s especially rewarding when students are genuinely interested and excited about the material.”

Dr. Romanek’s favorite memories at Bethany are watching seniors celebrate after passing their comprehensive exams. “Seeing them outside Old Main, celebrating with their family and friends is a great feeling for me,” he said. “It gives meaning to the work we do as teachers; we prepared them well.”

He believes what makes Bethany so special is the depth of relationships formed here. With small classes and close faculty-student connections, learning becomes deeply personal. “We get to know students and their interests,” he said. “These types of social interactions are unlikely to occur at bigger schools.”

Whether he’s teaching first-year students their foundational theories or guiding seniors through their final exams, Dr. Romanek brings a passion for psychology, and for Bethany’s student-centered mission, that shines through in everything he does.

RAISING THE BAR for Learning

For Associate Professor of Economics AARON M. HONSOWETZ, education has always been rooted in place, people, and the responsibility to step forward when a community needs leadership.

Originally from Michigan, Aaron described a childhood shaped by contrast. His early years were spent in Redford, a suburb bordering Detroit, before his family relocated while he was in middle school to a rural home surrounded by barns, cornfields, and soybeans. “Even though I lived amongst the fields, my new school district was a mixture of kids in rural areas with kids in homes that were part of the suburbs of Ann Arbor, Michigan.” That blend of environments would later shape how he understood institutions, communities, and the individuals within them.

Aaron’s academic journey began with a deep interest in politics. He enrolled at James Madison College at Michigan State University, a residential college where students and professors lived and learned side by side. “Like being at Bethany, it created an environment where every student and professor within the College knows each other,” he said. The shared traditions and expectations of the college fostering a strong sense of identity and accountability similar to an experience he sees echoed on Bethany’s campus culture today.

“At Bethany, students are challenged to embrace all the responsibilities and roles of Greek life and club organizations on campus,” Aaron noted. “The tight student population provided at Bethany College requires folks to step up to multiple roles… Students are close both to these institutions and the people leading them. They are a community that reinforces their shared effort to thrive and grow in college.”

Within James Madison College, Aaron pursued a double major in political theory and constitutional democracy and

international relations, immersing himself in political thought and debate. It was there that he encountered the foundational thinkers who reshaped his academic path. “As I started reading the works of David Hume, Adam Smith, Douglas North, and Ronald Coase, I came to the realization that their understanding of politics and human interaction lined up with my own takeaway on how the real world actually worked.”

That realization sparked what he jokingly describes as a very undergraduate response: “So like any reasonable undergraduate student, I added a third major, economics.”

His growing fascination with political economy led him to pursue a Ph.D. in Economics at George Mason University, following the guidance of mentors who helped him identify not just a graduate program, but the right intellectual fit.

“Their insights about going to graduate school and finding the correct fit for the person you wanted to become is something I work to emulate at Bethany College,” he said.

For Honsowetz, the heart of his work lies not just in research, but in teaching. He credits his own professors for pushing him beyond what he thought possible. “The teachers and professors who asked me to do more with the expectation and the knowledge that I can actually do it, even if I may doubt myself, got results,” he said. “At Bethany College we still do the same.”

He is particularly proud of Bethany’s commitment to rigorous learning and accountability. “The easy way out at some institutions is to just pass a student,” Aaron said.

“At Bethany College, we still demand students to learn.”

Comprehensive Exams, he believes, are a cornerstone of that mission, not only holding students accountable, but faculty as well. “It not only holds students accountable to retain the knowledge taught; it holds us, the faculty, accountable. We want our students to graduate,” he added, “and we have created a system at Bethany College where the only way our students can graduate is if we put in the work to ensure they actually learn.”

The Heartbeat of a

TRUE BETHANIAN GARY FIELDS ’68 represents what it means to be a true Bethanian. A Bethany native, Gary grew up just steps from campus and was shaped by the College long before he enrolled. His mother, once a pianist for silent films during the Depression, later served as administrative assistant to presidents Wilbur Cramblet and Dr. Perry Gresham. While working at the College, she pursued her own education beginning at Bethany before earning a master’s degree in education from West Virginia University and then returning to teaching in the Bethany grade school until retirement.

Thanks to Bethany’s support, Gary was able to pursue his education as a non-traditional student and graduated in his late twenties.

He went on to build a successful career in the Treasury Department at what is now Smurfit WestRock, PLC, headquartered in Ireland.

Gary continues a remarkable Bethany lineage. His great-uncle, Oreon E. Scott, honored each year through the Disciples of Christ lecture series,

has a legacy deeply intertwined with the College. Gary’s grandfather, William H. Fields ’01, served as a Disciples of Christ minister in Wheeling, and members of the Fields family founded four churches in the Northern Panhandle in the early 1900s. Across generations, the Scott and Fields families have proudly supported and graduated from Bethany College, with two Scott family members even serving as Bethany’s postmasters.

Bethany also played a role in Gary’s greatest personal blessing, meeting his wife, Ana Maria, originally from Buenos Aires, while both were building successful finance careers in New York City. Today, Gary and Ana Maria are honoring the College that shaped their journey. In 2025, they contributed a generous $100,000 matching gift. For every dollar donated through the end of the year, they matched it, doubling the impact up to $100,000. They are also planning to include Bethany in their estate plans by joining the Bronze Bison Society.
