At Bethany College, our chemistry program focuses on providing you with a theoretical and quantitative background in the major fields of chemistry, including analytical, biological, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry.

ABOUT BETHANY COLLEGE

Bethany College, founded in 1840, is the oldest private college in West Virginia. The Bethany experience focuses on academic excellence in the area of liberal arts and prepares future leaders for a lifetime of work and a life of significance.

Our campus is located on 1,300 beautiful acres in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, just one mile from Pennsylvania and five miles from Ohio. Bethany is served by Pittsburgh International Airport, just 45 minutes from campus. The College is located 39 miles from downtown Pittsburgh, 22 miles from Washington, Pa., and 14 miles from Wheeling.

A significant percentage of students continue education in medical, dental, veterinary, and pharmacy schools. Graduate school placement, often with full fellowships, is typical for graduates.

Student Opportunities

You may choose to become a member of one or more of our clubs, including the American Chemical Society Bethany Affiliates and the Pre-Health Professions Club. Advanced students may be selected to join Alpha Epsilon Delta, the health preprofessional honor society, or Gamma Sigma Epsilon, our chemistry honor society. As a chemistry student, you will have access to phenomenal resources, including the Math Science Community Learning Center and the ACS Lounge. We also offer funding provided by Gans Fund and NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium Fellowships. Bethany offers state-of-the-art instrumentation, including Raman and FTIR vibrational spectroscopy, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, PCR and Western Blot, and stationary and portable visible-ultraviolet near IR spectroscopy. Our chemistry program encourages you to pursue summer internships and field experiences to enhance your learning beyond the classroom.

Graduate Accomplishments

Many Bethany graduates go right into research or service fields, including education, industrial chemistry, and state and federal agencies. With the flexible skills they learned at Bethany, some recent graduates have gone on to continue their education at institutions like Duquesne University School of Pharmacy, University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, Marshall University, University of California, Berkeley, and University of Texas, Austin.

West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) – Chemistry students on a pre-med track can secure early guaranteed admittance, gain mentorship, and connect with medical professionals.

Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) College of Pharmacy –Early assurance into NEOMED’s Pharm.D. program after completing required science courses, with career counseling and pre-admission guidance.

Saint George’s University (SGU), Grenada – 3+4 and 4+4 programs allow chemistry students to fast-track into medical school, including clinical rotations in the U.S., U.K., and other locations.
