September. Hard to believe that we soon have to put away our flip flops and thoughts for beach vacations and the kids are back in school. At the Chamber one sure sign of fall is our Annual Meeting. This is an event that is always like Christmas. I know, maybe not the best analogy, but work with me on this one. Every year we invite someone that plays a significant role in our community. Last year we hosted the Nunez sisters, the creators of Sword and Plough, a wonderfully thought out start-up business. The prior year we hosted Coquese Washington, the Penn State women’s basketball coach who shared her tales on and off the court.

This year we welcome Margee Ensign, the new President of Dickinson College.

Dickinson is a top employer in the Carlisle Area. It also impacts so many other parts of our economy such as the real estate, rental, retail, lodging, and restaurant sectors.

In addition, Dickinson’s collaboration with the Carlisle business community provides opportunities to integrate students into our workplaces with internships and so many students are engaged with many of our member non-profits.

Margee Ensign, who most recently served as president of the American University of Nigeria (AUN) in Yola, Nigeria, has become the college’s 29th president. Ensign’s career has featured leadership roles at Columbia University in New York City, Tulane University in New Orleans, and the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California.

Meeting and learning more about Dickinson College and president Ensign’s plans for the college - you won’t want to miss it.

We will also be awarding our Diplomat of the Year which is our Membership Committee volunteer that devotes a considerable amount of time to reach out to our members and discuss the members’ needs, concerns, and ideas for support from the chamber. We will also be sharing details on our recent year end as well as recognizing the companies that see the most engagement with our keycard program.

So put October 18 on your calendar. You will be glad that you did.

Member Spotlight

The team at FSA is proud to announce its recent merger with Madden Engineering. For over 12 years, John Madden has owned and managed Madden Engineering Services Inc., providing excellent private and public engineering services to Central Pennsylvania. FSA welcomes John’s experience, expertise and relationships into our growing firm.

John will continue to manage and operate the Shermans Dale office in Perry County and will collaborate on projects with Justin Doty and his team in Carlisle. The transition has been smooth as two very similar company cultures come together to provide highly efficient, cost effective, quality products to customers.

The talented and dedicated employees with Madden Engineering have all accepted positions with FSA. The Carlisle Branch is very excited to add John, Wes, Lenny and Andrew to their Central Pennsylvania team. FSA considers employees to be family and looks forward to working together to provide quality Land Surveying, Engineering, Planning, Environmental Design and Landscape Architecture services to Carlisle, Central PA and the region.

Do you know anyone who is available on the last Tuesday of each month, 9:00-11:30AM? Volunteers need to be able to stand/walk to assist collating and stuffing our monthly ChamberPak mailing. This opportunity is perfect for retirees or anyone who would enjoy a morning out with others, socializing while getting a task done. Preference is volunteers who are able to commit monthly ongoing, not as a one-time volunteer.

Marketing Minute

Here’s a tip that will take you five minutes to complete and will help your business be seen by hundreds of potential customers.

The number one way to increase member page views on the Chamber website is by having a good description and 15 or more keywords. Here’s how to do that: 1. Log into your Member Information Center 2. Click the “Settings” tab at the top of the page.

3. On the left side menu, click “Company” 4. Under Company, click “Website Information” 5. Scroll down to your “Web Description/Text Content” box.

Here’s a great place to explain what your business does and how you can benefit customers who use your business.

6. Scroll down to the “Keywords” section. From our web statistics, we’ve found that businesses with over 15 helpful keywords will receive the most number of page views. In choosing keywords, think about what your customers might type into a search engine to find you. If you need some inspiration, consider websites such as Wordstream or Google Adwords to find out what your customers may be searching for.

NEXTAFF celebrated the grand opening of their Harrisburg location with a ribbon cutting on August 10.

ACE Drone Services LLC (“ADS”) is a new business in Carlisle, PA offering various drones and equipment for sale and/or lease. ADS is fully licensed to perform all maintenance and repairs of drones as well. ADS also offers a week-long training course to obtain the Part 107 Commercial Pilot Drone License necessary to fly any commercial drone.

ADS was founded by U.S. Air Force veteran, Christopher Ryan. Chris has 30 years’ experience in the airline industry and is a recent graduate of Shippensburg University earning his BA in Business Management/Entrepreneurship. ADS is striving to be the go to business for drones both in a brick and mortar store and online. ADS is available to perform inspections in both regular and FLIR camera capabilities. ADS is looking forward to providing their products and services to Carlisle and surrounding area.

The Downtown Counseling Center hosted a ribbon cutting and grand opening celebration on August 11.
