BASILEUS REMARKS On behalf of the Brothers of the Star-Studded Beta Phi Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., I send greetings and welcome each of you to our 2023 Achievement Week Convocation Program. Achievement Week, being one of our nationally mandated programs of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., was initially designed to promote the study of African American life and history. The theme for this year’s Achievement Week is “Omega Men Promoting a Harmonious Future Through Friendship and Service.” We thank you for taking this time to join us in celebrating our award winners, volunteers, and contributions that our Brothers have made to the community throughout the year and the continued success of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. Our beloved fraternity was founded on November 17, 1911, on the campus of Howard University located in Washington, DC, by three undergraduate students, Oscar J. Cooper, Edgar A. Love, and Frank Coleman, and a faculty advisor, Dr. Ernest E. Just inside a science building renamed Thirkield Hall. The fraternity adopted Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift as our four cardinal principles. After 112 years, we continue to stand on those same cardinal principles, remembering our past, working in our communities, and being a bridge builder for our youth. The Beta Phi Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. continues to have an immeasurable impact in Durham with various outreach efforts that have improved the lives of Durham’s citizens and the community. These include serving breakfast at Urban Ministries, Mobile Food Bank, Voter Registration Drives, Sixth District Summer Boys Camp, and hosting multiple Annual District meetings, to name a few. Again, thank you for supporting our Achievement Week Convocation Program. In Service,
Kumani Simmons Basileus Beta Phi Chapter

LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING Written by James Weldon Johnson Lift every voice and sing, Till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of Liberty; Let our rejoicing rise High as the list’ning skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us; Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory is won. Stony the road we trod, Bitter the chast’ning rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, Have not our weary feet Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered. We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, Out from the gloomy past, Till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast. God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way; Thou who hast by Thy might, Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee, Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, May we forever stand, True to our God, True to our native land.
