A Message from the BGS President

I

was reminded recently of the rapid transformation that has taken place in technology, and how that transformation has affected each of us in our daily lives. We’ve all grown accustomed to basic “necessities” like cell phones, Wi-Fi, pda’s and GPS devices, but it wasn’t that long ago in the realm of human evolution that we got along quite nicely without them.

Land lines, paper calendars and maps seemed to do the job just fine.

For those of you born before 1980, you can most likely recall a world that didn’t include the Internet either. I know, for the student members reading this it sounds like I’m beginning a boring history lesson – the older generation talking about “the good old days.” But that’s not the point at all. In fact, we’ve all been enriched and society has advanced tremendously as a direct result of the development and ever-present nature of the Internet.

The Telegraph, a British newspaper – in its online edition, of course – said, “The Internet, simultaneously the greatest aid and hindrance to productivity, turns 40…” That just about sums up most users’ “love-hate” relationship with the Internet; it is at once the world’s greatest collection of valuable information available literally instantaneously, and at the same time the world’s most effective tool to waste time and partake of the seedier side of the human experience. But most of us believe the good far outweighs the bad.

As the precursor to the modern Internet, ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network, a U.S. military project) was first tested on Oct. 29, 1969 – and it wasn’t much of a big deal to the public at the time. According to the Telegraph story: “On 29 October 1969, two letters – LO – were typed on a keyboard (at) the University of California, Los Angeles and appeared on a screen at the Stanford Research Institute, 314 miles away. The computer scientists had intended to type LOGIN, but the connection was lost just before the G. Nonetheless, this was the first time a message had been sent over a telephone line between two computers.”

It was an inauspicious start, to be sure, but one that would eventually change our world in every way imaginable. Some interesting highlights in the development of the Internet include: • The first email is generally thought to have been sent in 1971.

• The term “Internet” was first coined in 1974, in a Stanford University research paper.

• The World Wide Web was first introduced in 1989.

• Mosaic, the first widely utilized browser, was unveiled in 1993. Netscape Navigator followed in 1994 and Internet Explorer in 1995.

• Amazon and eBay were introduced in 1995 and 1996, respectively.

• Beta Gamma Sigma launched its first very basic website in 1996.

• The first wireless application protocol was introduced in 1997.

This was the first attempt to make the Internet available over mobile phone networks.

• Google was formed in 1998 and would eventually dominate and run out of business many other search engines, including Gopher, WebCrawler, Magellan, etc.

• Wikipedia was launched in 2001 • YouTube was launched in 2005.

• In 2008, for the first time, China’s number of Internet users surpassed that of the United States.

What’s next? I don’t pretend to know that, but many very smart people are working on it right now. In five years I could write this column and we’d probably be discussing some Internet services that we haven’t even heard of yet – and we’d probably all wonder how we got along without them.

But the fact is the Internet has been a great academic and professional tool for business, and its importance will continue to grow. For that reason alone we wish the Internet a very happy 40th birthday and look forward to the next generation of advancements.

International Update I will cover this a bit more in the next issue, but I wanted to congratulate two new Beta Gamma Sigma chapters that were recently established. I was very fortunate to take part in the first event of the BGS Chapter at University of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, and I recorded comments that were played at the first International Event of the Recanati BGS Chapter at Tel Aviv University. Much like the growth of the Internet, Beta Gamma Sigma’s international efforts started slowly, but through hard work and persistence there is now tremendous momentum.

Again, the next “Message from the BGS President” will be dedicated to discussing the Society’s international efforts, but I wanted to let you know about these new chapters.

The following is an excerpt from the acceptance speech of 2009 Beta Gamma Sigma International Honoree Sharon L. Allen, Chairman of the Board, Deloitte LLP. Allen has been acknowledged throughout her 35 years in the audit and consulting industries for her contributions to business and the community. She has appeared on Forbes’ “100 Most Powerful Women in the World” list for the past three years and has been named one of “50 Women to Watch” by The Wall Street Journal.

ith the new phenomena of social networking upon us, I recently commissioned Delloite’s third annual ethics and workplace survey, this time to examine social networking and its impact on business ethics and reputation management. We took a look at social networking from two perspectives. First, we polled 500 executives whose businesses may or may not have policies about social networking in the workplace. We also polled 1,000 employed people over the age of 18 regarding their attitudes about social networking.

Let me begin with what we learned from business executives that we polled. Seventy-eight percent felt there is nothing unethical about employees freely expressing themselves online. That’s good. But 60 percent said that employers have a right to know how employees are portraying themselves, or representing the company, on professional and personal networking sites. Fifty-eight percent felt the reputational risk associated with social networking should be a boardroom issue.

I suspect that last number might have been higher, and perhaps unanimous, had we conducted the executive survey after, rather than before, a recent posting on YouTube – the one made by the two former employees of the global pizza company. I’ll spare you the gory details, but I will share the quote from the company’s spokesperson who said afterwards,

“Nothing is local anymore. That’s the challenge of the web world, and any two idiots with a video camera and a dumb idea can damage the reputation of a 50-year-old brand.”

Now, incidents like this and others reflect some of the feedback we received from the employees we surveyed. While 74 percent of them strongly agreed or agreed that it is easy to damage one’s reputation as a result of increased use of social networking, 34 percent rarely or never consider what customers or clients might think before they post online. Forty-seven percent say either their employer has no formal policy governing social networking, or they don’t know about it. And even if there were a clear policy, 41 percent of them say it would not make an impact on the way they behave online.

Clearly, there are aspects of social networking that carry profound business risk. That’s why I think it’s especially important to ensure that students, young professionals and workers of all ages for that matter, have a thorough grounding in ethics and a keen understanding that decisions do have consequences – some far reaching.

As Warren Buffett says, “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it.” But that’s where it is absolutely vital for ethical leaders to set the ethical tone for an organization.

In our first ethical survey two years ago, we asked people to identify the top factors that influence their conduct.

Seventy-seven percent of them cited either the behavior of management or a direct supervisor. By setting a consistent ethical example, senior leaders can help their organizations avoid a culture of excess that can lead to ethical misconduct.

Those who instill ethical values in their corporate culture will make it easier for the people who work for them to step back immediately if they ever find themselves running too close to the line – and that goes for their public and private lives.

Who is Beta Gamma Sigma? You are Beta Gamma Sigma.

eta Gamma Sigma members have at least one thing in common – all have been recognized as high academic achievers in the study of business. However, it’s likely each member’s personal and professional aspirations are as diverse as the paths that brought them to where they are today. BGS member Eric Stephens is a good example of just how different one’s path can be. A career in business wasn’t even on his radar until, as he put it, a “strange twist of fate” occurred – taking him from the stages of Nashville to a new role in Music City, behind the curtain.

Growing up in Texas, Stephens said he always had an interest in music.

“As early as I can remember I was listening to the radio – playing on my grandmother’s piano when we would go over to her house.”

And, at around 8 or 9 years old, he recalls getting a paper drum set and playing it so much it eventually broke.

“It wasn’t that situation you hear about a kid growing up and there’s a piano in the living room and there were records all over the place. [Music] was just kind of my own thing, really.”

and high school when Stephens really began to take a sincere Eric Stephens - BGS 2009, interest in music. He Tennessee Technological University first picked up the tuba when he was 12 years old, and later, the electric and upright bass.

After high school, he went on to study music at the University of Texas and continued to hone his skills as a musician – and got quite good.

“When I was a junior or senior in college I was principal tuba in a wind ensemble and got invited to play at Carnegie Hall,” he said.

For any musician, the chance to perform at Carnegie Hall is a dream come true.

So for Stephens, this was an opportunity of a lifetime – describing it as one of the most incredible experiences he’s ever had.

With a taste of the big stage, he decided to continue cultivating both his musical talent and music education and moved to a very appropriate place – Music City, USA – Nashville, Tenn.

“I had gotten a graduate assistantship at Middle Tennessee State University in music, so I was also going to pursue my master’s there,” he said. “I was also going to get a second bachelor’s in their recording industry program, because I wanted to be a recording engineer – working in the studios as people would come in and record albums and demos.”

However, shortly after relocating an unexpected tuition bill arrived in the mail.

“I was like, ‘What is this?’ I was told I had a tuition waiver.”

Turned out the waiver only applied to the master’s courses and not to the classes offered in the recording program.

“It pretty much shot the whole idea out of the water,” he said.

Despite the grim news, Stephens still pursued his master’s of music. He also began working the Nashville music scene, landing a gig at the Opryland USA theme park playing bass and tuba in various park productions. The job provided a steady income

ith an Internet connection or a cell phone signal, doing business with someone halfway around the world can be just as convenient and effective as doing business with someone across the street.

However, for those conducting business outside the protective walls of wireless communication, in a foreign country for instance, some additional skills may be needed. Jamie Gelbtuch, founder and principal consultant at Cultural Mixology, has the interesting job of providing that instruction – teaching people the cross-cultural tools and language skills they need to embark on international assignments and navigate new terrains.

Gelbtuch’s culture and language training services have been utilized by a number of universities, non-profits and global conglomerates such as Pepsi, IBM and Shell.

“I’m teaching people how to understand culture and the ways in which cultures are different,” she said.

While every program is tailored to fit a particular client’s needs, the first lesson is always cultural awareness.

“There are a lot of different tools you can use to understand culture,” said Gelbtuch. “A common metaphor that people often use to explain culture is an iceberg. The thing about an iceberg is you can only see 10 percent. The 10 percent you see, for example, would be the ‘what’ parts – what language people speak, what clothes they wear, what food they eat – but that doesn’t mean you understand the culture. Ninety percent of culture is invisible. It’s the bottom part of the iceberg – people’s values, beliefs, history and geography – all those things that really make people act the way they act.”

“I tell people they have a toolbox, and what they need to do is add tools to their toolbox that still supports their values. You don’t want to ask people to change their values – I can’t do that and they can’t do that – but they do need to add behaviors that are still supported by their values that they can use in the new country.”

Sometimes her clients have a hard time grasping this concept.

“It’s getting people to understand that you’re not changing who you are, you are just using certain tools in your toolbox in one place and then you put them away. You’ll never use those tools in Mexico or in Brazil – it’s knowing what to use and when to use it.”

One of those tools may be how to decipher the meanings of certain words or situations depending on the context.

“In the U.S., you can pretty much think of ‘yes’ as ‘yes’ and ‘no’ as ‘no’ – there’s not a big ambiguity. In Mexico, the answer is pretty much always ‘yes’.”

Gelbtuch calls this a high context culture – meaning the message is not just in the words.

“The message is in all these things in the environment, who you’re talking to, where you’re meeting, that person’s place in the hierarchy – all of those things.”

Her programs also stress the importance of language in relation to culture, as she believes one cannot fully understand the culture without understanding the language.

For example, Gelbtuch is fluent in Spanish, French and English, but is now learning a new language to better understand Latin America – her area of expertise.

“I decided to undertake learning Portuguese because Brazil is the biggest country in Latin America and they do have a distinct language,” she said. “It was important to have at least a working knowledge of Portuguese.”

In fact, it was her previous study of language that inspired Gelbtuch’s current career path.

“Growing up, I was always passionate about languages,” she said. “My mom was a foreign language teacher so she would sometimes talk to me in French or Spanish, and I just latched onto it and loved it. I was always asking for more, and when I had the opportunity in school to get into classes I ran with it.

“In high school, I studied both French and Spanish,” said Gelbtuch. “I was very fortunate to have a language teacher, who to this day is still a mentor to me and a very strong influence for my love and appreciation for language and learning.”

As an undergraduate at Georgetown University, she refined her language skills, majoring in French and minoring in Spanish and business.

“In college, I had my first opportunity to travel abroad and it made everything

kind of click in my head,” said Gelbtuch, who studied in France.

“They say you can study and read about something, but until you can live it, it’s really different.”

After graduation, insistent on finding a job that would complement her language training, she went to work for a French furniture company based in New York, which allowed her many opportunities to travel internationally and utilize her skills.

Eventually, Gelbtuch took a break from corporate life in New York and went back to school for an MBA in international management at the Thunderbird School of Global Management. There, she became a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, experienced working in international teams and learned more about cross-cultural communication and theory. It was during her time at Thunderbird that she began to cultivate her knowledge in Latin America and the Spanish language.

“After my MBA and working in corporate New York, I decided I wanted to do something where I really worked more with people, but I still wanted to keep my foot in the door in terms of the business environment, because I had a head for business. I just didn’t want to be in a corporate office all day long.”

While conducting a vigorous search for a fulltime job, she realized what she had been looking for all along. At that time, Gelbtuch was providing cross cultural and language training for a relocation company on an as-needed basis.

“At a certain point I just woke up in my job search and thought, ‘I’m looking for

something that I already love doing,’” she said.

This revelation was the inspiration behind Cultural Mixology. Since launching her consultancy in 2008, Gelbtuch has taught a variety of executives, academics and expatriates the tools they need to adjust to new cultural environments.

“I love impacting people on a personal level,” she said. “I love being able to feel like I’ve made a difference in the experience that people are going to have – helping people understand the complexities of the larger world we live in.”

A

t the time of induction, Beta Gamma Sigma members must commit to upholding and furthering the ideals of the Society – honor, wisdom and earnestness.

However, one principle already held significance for Jonathan Powell long before his induction ceremony. Prior to obtaining an MBA and transitioning into business, Powell attended the United States Naval Academy and honorably served as a submarine officer for more than six years. Today, he still supports the nation’s defense, but in a much different capacity.

Powell’s Naval Academy and submariner aspirations developed in his teen years during the Cold War-era 1980s. His intrigue was further fueled after reading Tom Clancy’s best-selling 1984 military thriller “The Hunt for Red October” and a Sports Illustrated article discussing the submarine interests of NBA Hall of Famer and Naval Academy graduate, David Robinson.

He went on to perform missions aboard the USS Grayling, which is now decommissioned, and the USS Philadelphia. Through his service he’s also performed the unique task of replacing the core of a nuclear reactor and has carried out classified operations in the Arctic Circle.

Despite becoming quite a successful submarine officer, over time he discerned he would not make this his career.

“The Cold War was over. Being a submariner in the ‘90s was different than being a submariner in the ‘80s. During the ‘80s, the Cold War was at its height, submarines were on the frontlines of this nation’s security,” he said. “In the ‘90s and late ‘90s, the mission had completely changed. For me, the choice was to get out at that point. It was just a fundamental shift in the nature of where the country was.”

In 1999, Powell returned to the Naval Academy to work as a director of admissions.

“That was very rewarding to help folks on that side of the fence having gone through the process,” he said.

It was also during this time he began noticing a number of his peers going back to school and decided to do the same – enrolling in the University of Maryland’s MBA program.

“I was like, ‘Well, I better get on this graduate school train,’” said Powell.

“I wasn’t savvy. I can’t take any credit for that path. I did know that an MBA would help me make that transition from military life to civilian life. That’s one of the functions that a lot of folks use an MBA for. But, I wasn’t just changing industries; I was making a lifestyle change.”

“The defense business is very unique – everything from the alphabet soup of acronyms, the time, and the culture...My military background is essential to succeed in this environment.”

an influential high school guidance counselor that finalized Powell’s future in the Navy.

“He took me aside one day and said, ‘Look, Jonathan, you’ve got this opportunity. If you take it, you will more or less be set. You can make your own way in this world if you take this opportunity.’”

Encouraged by the advice, he entered the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. in 1990, foregoing attendance at other esteemed schools to which he was accepted, including Cornell and Columbia universities.

After four years in the academy, Powell began submarine training – more than a year-and-a-half of preparation – learning how to operate a nuclear reactor, drive a submarine, shoot torpedoes and fire missiles. All of this is completed before “one even steps foot on a submarine in an official capacity,” he explained.

“It’s pretty rigorous – pretty intense.

And it makes sense. You don’t just kind of willy-nilly it.”

“One of the courses I took, the lady asked a question to the class: ‘Does anyone know what USS is?’

And I dutifully responded, ‘United States Ship.’ Of course she had no interest in that; she was referring to U.S. Steel.

“I just went in there open-minded with a lot to learn. I had no real insight into business or the world of business. During the course of two years, I kind of blossomed.

Because I was wide-eyed and bushy-tailed, I took advantage of all the resources.

“Someone who came from industry to get an MBA maybe would have had an attitude of ‘Been there, done that’ – a whip of entitlement. That was totally not me. I think I benefited from that...that’s why I’m a BGS person… I was there to learn.”

While finishing up his MBA in 2001 Powell made the leap into civilian life, landing a spot in IBM’s Experienced Professional Enrichment Program, or EPEP. This is a tailored leadership program that exposes junior military officers – those who graduate from a service academy (West Point, the Naval Academy, etc.) – to the business by placing them on a project management or consultant track. Following the project management course, Powell wound up working in a division of IBM that concentrates on the government’s federal civilian agencies.

In 2006, during the Avian Flu outbreak, he was assigned to IBM’s newlyestablished Global Corporate Pandemic Strategy Taskforce, working directly for one of the company’s highest ranking executives.

“Towards the end of 2006 and into 2007, I got some calls from a mentor of mine, a gentleman who was a retired SES (Senior Executive Service) – the highest level one can attain as a government civilian” said Powell. “My association with him dated back to 2002, when he was still with the Department of the Navy and I called on him as a potential client. We just kind of hit it off and he took a liking to me and I established a mentoring relationship with him – me being the mentee and he the mentor.”

Their good rapport ultimately resulted in a job offer working at his mentor’s employer, CACI International, Inc. – a U.S. defense contractor providing professional services and IT solutions.

“A big part of CACI is Systems Engineering and Technical Assistance (SETA) support,” said Powell. “It’s getting a lot of press lately with the current presidential administration wanting to insource jobs that are currently done by contractors. But there’s a lot of administration and documentation required for Department of Defense work and that is a big part of CACI’s business – being the arms and legs to do all of the documentation associated with carrying out defense business. Another big piece of CACI’s business is IT services.”

In his position at CACI, Powell currently leads a 60-person team that supports a program for USAFMSA – the U.S. Army Force Management Support Agency.

“I lead efforts that directly support the war fighter – the business processes used to organize and structure the force – for instance, if the president asks for additional troops to be sent to Afghanistan – are supported by the systems my team operates and enhances.”

He has found his military background beneficial in navigating a complex environment, not only politically, but for the systems his team supports and modernizes.

“The defense business is very unique – everything from the alphabet soup of acronyms, the time, and the culture,” he said. “My military background is essential to succeed in this environment.”

Overall, Powell describes his move back into defense as both “rewarding” and “meaningful.”

“We’re a country at war – our men and women are out there protecting us on a daily basis. I appreciate the fact that my work has some impact.”

But you don’t see much about services for adults, and obviously children with autism at some point become adults with autism.”

The lack of services and resources helped reinforce their cause.

“We are really trying to cater to the folks who have a high enough IQ that they often do not fit into a state’s definition of someone who requires services. Yet, because of their autism or Asperger’s syndrome, they might need help bridging the gap between the autistic world and the neuro-typical world,” said Avery. “We found there weren’t as many organizations that were dealing with that particular aspect.”

Avery and her business partner have been working diligently to bring Aspies and Auties Achieve to fruition. They have submitted their application to receive their 501(c)(3) nonprofit designation and are anxiously awaiting its approval to start applying for grants.

“In the meantime, we’ve been working really hard,” she said. “Most importantly, talking to adults with Asperger’s syndrome and high functioning autism to find out what it is they would most like to have available to them.”

Avery and her business partner also meet frequently with professionals and organizations that serve the autism community to learn from them and to find out how they can partner “to deliver the best possible set of services without duplicating anything that is already available.”

“We’ve been really blessed with the incredible talent of the people who’ve been willing to talk with us, spend time with us, and give us advice,” she said.

Once they receive the appropriate funding, Avery said they want to open a working service center in the Minneapolis area, which will function as a testing ground for their ideas.

“We will need to find folks who need services and hopefully they will find us,” she said. “They will get matched with a case worker we call a ‘Service Partner.’ The Service Partner’s role is to facilitate a plan so we can get these folks the skills they need and match them with employers that might have appropriate environments and a job, so they can provide value back to the employer.

“These are folks that are really able to hit the ground and be great employees; they just may need a couple of accommodations.”

Avery’s vision for Aspies and Auties Achieve is to have at least one service center in every state. She would also like to see every able ‘Aspie’ and ‘Autie’ have access to appropriate employment.

“I went out seeking a new challenge, and this is definitely it,” she said. I am learning new things every day and working toward a goal that is very important to me and will have a real impact on the people we intend to serve. Everyone should be so lucky as to embark on such a career adventure.”

Keeping up with the “Best in Business” Here’s a sampling of what some other BGS members are currently up to: Professional fundraiser and wine and food enthusiast Adrienne Capps (BGS 2008, Pace University) has found a way to combine her love of wine and charity by partnering to create Vintners Charitable Cooperative (VCC) – an online wine marketplace that helps nonprofit organizations raise money. Fifty percent of all money raised goes back to VCC’s charity partners.

After more than 20 years leading business development and other activities for a variety of companies, Eleni Pallas (BGS 1996, George Washington University) decided to enter the world of leadership coaching. Her firm, Pallas & Co., works with business leaders and non-profits to help them develop and build their leadership skills and effectiveness. She is also participating in industry-wide efforts to bring coaching into the mainstream.

Drawing upon his financial education and professional experience building databases, Christian Parisi (BGS 2009, Binghamton University) has developed fantasyfootballchecklist.com – a website that provides customized fantasy football draft advice tailored to individual league settings. The site allows users to enter league scoring settings and composition, such as the number of players used at each position and number of teams in the league to generate customized draft advice.

Karen Frye (BGS 2005, University of Colorado Denver) is an accountant and small business consultant that specializes in small government and water-related business. She has been appointed as the financial coordinator of a $3 million stimulus project building a membrane drinking water plant and new storage facility in Hot Sulphur Springs, Colo. She has also been working as chief financial officer for a company that has developed a unique filtration process that could revolutionize water treatment in developing countries.

After leaving his corporate post at Goldman Sachs as Vice President of Technology, Puneet Jhajharia (BGS 2008, New York University) joined the Grassroots Business Fund (GBF) as an investment officer. GBF is a non-profit organization that creates wealth and economic opportunity by helping the poor produce assets, reach markets, increase wages and engage in entrepreneurial activities. His role in GBF involves sourcing investments for the South Asia portfolio and seeking partnership opportunities with various organizations in the region.

Network with the “Best in Business” BGS Alumni Chapters – A Global Network of Business Leaders The Beta Gamma Sigma Alumni Network continues to grow.

In the last year, the Society established four new alumni chapters – Raleigh/Durham, South Texas, Switzerland and New Zealand – expanding the global reach of the network. These latest additions bring the total number of official BGS alumni chapers to 24, with several other locations around the world also looking to add their own chapters to the network in the future.

Approximately half the lifetime members of the Society live in areas served by BGS alumni chapters. If you are among the 50 percent that has an alumni chapter in your metropolitan area, you should seriously consider getting involved in the networking opportunities provided.

Chapters hold a variety of events – social gatherings, sporting events, behind-the-scenes tours and educational speaker series – all of which provide ample opportunity to meet and network with other BGS members.

“I was attracted to the group to further my exposure in business, make contacts, network, and have some fun along the way,” explained Jim Olds (BGS 1980, U. of Southern Cal.), president of the Los Angeles Area Alumni Chapter.

In addition to the networking opportunities that come with participation in the Alumni Network, Olds pointed out many advantages to being an alumni chapter member.

“The benefits of BGS alumni are many,” he said. “I think we see chances to develop leaderhip skills and event planning skills.”

Olds explained that alumni events also provide participants with professional development opportunities, “not only in our chosen specialty of business, but also in other areas,” he said.
