Message from the President and Co-founder The fourth annual BETA Camp has concluded and I am left with just one word. EPIC! I am once again amazed by the commitment of my team to invest in the lives of our young people and to our corporate sponsors and partners who year after year continue to invest in the vision and foundation of what BETA Camp represents. We began with a common experience, a shared passion and today a summer camp that bright and eager young Bahamians await every year.

BETA Camp, for me, means so much more than I could ever describe within the confounds of vocabulary, ink and paper nevertheless, I’ll do my best to convey those sentiments. BETA Camp is not simply a venture, an educational program, nor is it just a learning experience. Instead, it is interwoven into the fabric of my life’s calling and vocation. I’ve answered that call with eagerness and enthusiasm while being surrounded by a group of young, eclectic and apropos Bahamian engineers and scientists whose passion, leadership and ownership of BETA Camp sustains its presence. As a team, we are committed to the cause and this year as I played a smaller role in the day-to-day activities of BETA Camp I watched my team step up to the plate, swing their bats and hit home runs daily. It makes such a difference when not only are you a part of something but when that something is and becomes a part of you.

This year we relocated BETA Camp to Freeport and not only were we excited but we knew it would be a challenge. There were factors that drove that decision, namely, Freeport is the industrial capital of the Bahamas and an objective to create greater exposure for family island students. In addition, we focused on a smaller target of students while offering an introduction to various engineering disciplines within the week of BETA Camp. Our theme this year centered on “Energy and the Environment for Everyone” was a call to all Bahamians young and old to begin seriously contemplating energy usage and environmental sustainability within our country. Recent events have highlighted that we as a people have done a poor job of prioritizing the diversification and conservation of energy as well as the protection and sustainability of our immediate environment. So what do we do? It’s critical that we teach and train our young people to not only be aware but to become integral factors in solving infinite problems that will have impactful results both now and in the future.

Through the use of the Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Academy campus and our field trip sponsors we were able to host yet another successful BETA camp and I am truly thankful for the support of our local community in this effort. Companies such as WalCo Imports that provided in-kind sponsorship to import all program materials made such a difference that I would be remisced in failing to mention their support. This year we’ve undertaken new sponsorship with companies such as ALIV and Cloud Carib as Gold Sponsors to this year’s camp and we look forward to continuing in our partnership as we develop an even better BETA Camp next year.

This report provides the substantial evidence that BETA Camp is real and necessary and whether the expected outcomes are immediate or delayed we know one thing to be true, what we are doing matters. It is my hope that this endeavour becomes more and more real to you as you take the time to read this report. The proof is in the pudding as they say and this pudding is igniting passion, developing pursuit and closing the skills and exposure gap for young Bahamians in technical fields such as engineering.

About BETA History BETA as an organization was co-founded by engineers Trenicka Rolle and D’André Wilson-Ihejirika in March 2014. They had both been involved in organizing engineering outreach programs in the US and Canada, respectively, and were looking to make a similar impact at home. When the two realized that their passions and interest aligned, they immediately decided to take action. D’André and Trenicka then worked to recruit other Bahamian engineers and like-minded individuals to join their team.

Collectively the BETA team is comprised of individuals who are deeply passionate about BETA for several reasons. Firstly, they realized it was only by chance that they entered into engineering because the exposure to it was lacking throughout their primary and secondary education. Secondly, they all love what they do as engineers realizing that engineering in tandem with innovation is constantly changing the world around us for the better. Lastly, many of them have been involved in engineering outreach programs outside of the Bahamas and know that this sort of programming can increase the number of individuals graduating with engineering degrees and entering the workforce both at home and globally. Hence, BETA and BETA Camp was established.

Mission The BETA team’s mission is to use technical expertise to inspire and improve the Bahamas through a series of collaborative efforts that will strengthen STEM education across the nation, create opportunities for engineers and address vital infrastructure issues on our Bahama Islands.

2017 Camp Overview Summary of 2017 Camp The 2017 BETA Camp continued to expand of the foundations set by previous camps.

In 2017, we continued outreach to family islands as a focus to increase STEM exposure across the entire country. In doing so we relocated BETA Camp to Freeport, Grand Bahama. As we targeted increasing family island presence we simultaneously recruited and sponsored g students from New Providence to attend BETA Camp in Freeport.

In this year’s camp we aimed to recruit more female students as well as ensure we had equal gender representation in our instructors and volunteers. We aimed at increasing our demographic of public school students to 50% and focused on 6 successful technical streams: Biomedical, Chemical, Civil/Environmental, Computer Science/Web Development, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering. However, this year we diversified our stream structure in that students now had the opportunity to experience more than one engineering discipline within that one week. Each day we offered 3-4 engineering disciplines and students chose an engineering discipline for the day. We shuffled those choices each day so that students will have flexibility to choose more than one discipline.

Our design project was based on the camp’s theme “Energy and the Environment for Everyone” and will focused on STEM solutions to conserve and diversify energy, protect the environment and involve everyone.

2017 Camp Demographics Student Demographics The 2017 camp hosted a total of 62 students. The following demographics for the BETA Camp will span age, gender, grade, education and island of The Bahamas.

Gender As in previous years, this year’s target for enrollment in terms of gender distribution was to achieve a 5050 ratio of males to females. This year we had an acceptance of 24 Females and 38 Males, giving the percentage of 61.3% male to 38.7% female. We continue to make improvements toward even distribution.

Age The desired age requirements for this year’s camp remained the same as the previous year, maintaining the 11-14 age bracket. Nevertheless, we did accept a few students outside of the range as a result of eagerness and strong interest in the attending the camp. The age group of 11-14 encompassed the majority of the students accepted into the camp whilst there were students who were age 15, 16 and 17.

The majority of the students were age 14, matching the last year.

Grade and School Students were surveyed for the grade level that they had recently completed as of June 2017. This year’s target was to achieve stronger participation for public school students attending the BETA Camp.

Schools were divided into public and private. We strive to facilitate public school students as much as possible and this year we had 39% public school and 61% private school students. We recognize this falls below our target percentages and so we will create a greater emphasis and intentionality on recruiting public school students for the 2018 camp.

The criteria in terms of grade level for the BETA Camp comprised of grades 7-9. Nevertheless, we accepted a few students outside of these grade levels. The majority of the students were in the 9th

Energy and the Environment for Everyone grade. Additionally, the core grade demographics included our target of 7 – 9th grade students. We continue to make exceptions for students who show eagerness and enthusiasm towards learning about engineering and technology.

Island of Residence In the survey students were asked to identify which island and city they were from. As part of our objective for this year’s camp we aimed to target students from family islands impacted by recent hurricane activity.

Stream Demographics The students were given a choice of which streams they wanted to attend each day. With this approach, they were able to sample each stream for a day in order to receive as immersive an experience as possible. This resulted in Computer Science seeing a surge on the first day, Mechanical the next and Electrical on the last day. Numbers varied and therefore we didn’t collect data for this.

Instructor Demographics In 2017 there were 11 instructors/curriculum coordinators in total. The distribution per stream is shown below.

Of the curriculum coordinators involved in the camp most were young professional or “Engineers-In-Training (EIT)” meaning they have not yet received their professional engineering license and typically have 1- 5 years of technical experience.

There educational background of 2017 instructors span bachelor’s degrees to PhD’s. Most of the instructors are primarily young professionals; nevertheless, many have postgraduate degrees while others have MBA’s. As a team the BETA Camp has a diverse educational background, figure x displays the data including instructors that were not present at this year’s BETA Camp.

All camp instructors and at large the BETA team is Bahamian. However, the team is spread across various locations. The chart below depicts the place of residence of the 2017 instructors.

Below is the ration of genders in the instructors. It has been an ongoing goal to close the gender gap of instructors in order to provide representation of females in engineering in order to inspire more girls to pursue engineering.

However, we have yet to accomplish this goal and will continue to work towards this.

Summary of Stream Activities At the core of BETA Camp is the fundamental principles of engineering and how we teach it to our students. Through this learning experience, students are exposed to several engineering disciplines. This year we revamped the camp to allow students to experience an introduction to at most three engineering disciplines. We offered six choices this year:

Biomedical Engineering Biomedical Engineering is the application of engineering principles and design concepts to medicine and biology.

The outcomes of this particular engineering discipline are focused on improving the overall healthcare of society and particularly the lives of those suffering from medical impairments.

Instructors Trenicka Rolle Trenicka Rolle was born and raised in Freeport, Grand Bahama. She graduated from Sunland Baptist Academy as head girl and salutatorian of her class. Trenicka completed her undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2011 and recently received her master’s degree in Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering. She recently worked as a Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Engineer at Trimech Solutions LLC in Richmond, Virginia and now works as a Project Engineer I at PharmaChem Technologies in Freeport, Grand Bahama.

Chadwin Hanna Chadwin Hanna is a graduating senior at Kettering University where he majors in Mechanical Engineering with a specialty in Bio-engineering Applications. He also has a minor in Biochemistry. He comes from a diverse cultural background having received his secondary education in Freeport, The Bahamas and pursued his post-secondary studies in the United States of America. He is determined to use his knowledge of engineering and the human body to leave a lasting impact on the world of medicine, and most importantly the lives of people for whom this industry exists.

Chemical Engineering Chemical Engineering is a discipline of engineering that involves the design of process to produce and transform materials in the form of chemical reactions from laboratory to scale up within an industrial chemical plant. This can be in the form of applied chemistry on a laboratory scale, to industrial size processes. Chemical engineers

must know and understand chemical principles while also applying the optimization and mathematical modelling of the engineering disciplines.

Instructors Adam Carroll Adam Carroll is a Freeport native and graduated from Bishop Michael Eldon High School. He holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of South Florida. Adam has been a process engineer at PharmaChem Technologies since 2013 where his duties include assessing, designing, altering, qualifying, and trending process engineering systems.

Currently, Adam has been an integral part of the design, construction, commissioning, and qualification of a brand new, state of the art, multipurpose active pharmaceutical ingredient manufacturing facility – which will bring Freeport and the Bahamas at the forefront of the chemical/pharmaceutical industry.

Luke Johnson Luke Johnson is a native of Freeport where he attended St. Georges High school as Deputy Head Boy and graduated as salutatorian of his class. He obtained my Bachelors of Engineering in Chemical Engineering, Summa Cum Laude, with an Honors College degree, from Youngstown State University in Youngstown, OH in May 2016. He was the chapter Vice President and President of AIChE (American Institute of Chemical Engineers), chapter secretary of NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers), and a member Ohio Lamda Chapter of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor. Luke is currently a second year PhD Candidate in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. I conduct research on computational catalysis for novel 2-D materials for use of solving broader environmental problems such as electrochemical storage, conversion, and cheaper synthesis methods of important chemicals.

Engineering Solar Energy

To address growing energy needs, many engineers are focused on optimizing efficiency in harvesting solar energy. The Sun is a never ending source of energy readily available to us. We will discuss the science behind solar energy and how to utilize it.

Organic Solar Cell

We will learn about how a device made with dye from a plant (like cherries, blackberries, or raspberries) can be used to convert light energy into electrical energy.

We will do this by building our own organic solar cell and measuring the photovoltaic devices' performance based on power output.

Green chemistry: biofuels and the environment

As chemical engineers, it is important that we look to renewable forms of energy to sustain a growing population. In the Bahamas, we can use this concept in relation to our bio-resources.

Students will learn how to synthesize and analyze these fuels, as well as understand more about the greenhouse gases released as a result of burning these fuels.

Green chemistry: catalysis and enzymology

Chemical Engineers have strong backgrounds in chemistry, which help in our battle for environmental friendliness. In this section, we will conduct several experiments related to catalysts and enzymes that are crucial in facilitate otherwise naturally unfavorable chemical reactions. These materials can also help us to be more environmentally accountable. As we’ll learn, detergents, hydrogen peroxide, bread, and salt will prove to give quite interesting displays of these important catalysts through this series of experiments

Civil and Environmental Engineering Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that entails the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works like roads, bridges, canals, dams, and buildings.

Instructor Albrion Symonette Jr. Albrion graduated from St. John’s College (Nassau, Bahamas) in 2007 where he held the position of headboy. He then went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and Bachelor of Science in General Science from Missouri University of Science & Technology and the distinguished Morehouse College respectively. Geotechnical and Construction Engineering were his focuses. He completed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Atlanta University Center (AUC) Dual Degree Engineering Program (DDEP) in May 2012. He has earned several awards to include the Ripple Institute (S.T.E.M.) Fellowship, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society membership and the Ehigiamusoe Foundation International Student Award. Computer Science and Web Development Computer science is the study of the theoretical algorithms and practical problems that are implemented via computer hardware and software design.

Web Development in particular is a specialization of computer science and broadly refers to the coding and programming that enables website functionality.

Instructors Bradley Thompson Jr. Bradley Thompson was born and raised in Freeport, Grand Bahama. An alumnus of McGill University in computer engineering, Bradley has developed websites for multiple organizations and businesses. Previously a web programmer for Frontstart, Bradley is now a systems support specialist at Freeport Container Port, specializing in Information Technology and Project Management. Bradley has experience using JavaScript, AJAX, HTML, CSS, PHP and MySQL; several programming languages including C and Java; wired and wireless network design as well as microprocessor design.

Edison Hanchell Jr. Edison Hanchell is an Information Technology Specialist and Web Developer. He studied Computer Science at Acadia University and currently works as a C3 Systems Engineer at Cloud Carib Ltd. He previosly worked with Doctors Hospital Bahamas as a Systems Administrator . He specializes in Application Analysis, Virtualization, Database Administration and Software Development. Electrical Engineering Electrical engineering is the field of engineering that involves the study and application of electricity. Electrical engineering is subdivided into a wide range of subfields including electronics, digital computers, power engineering, telecommunications, control systems, signal processing, instrumentation, and microelectronics.

Instructors LaToya Johnson Ms. LaToya R. Johnson holds a Master of Science in Engineering Degree from the John’s Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland after receiving her undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering from Morgan State University.

She subsequently obtained a Master’s in Business and Global Administration to enhance her proficiency, performance and participation in the business environment. Ms. Johnson has used her 18+ years of engineering and business experience in the corporate and non-profit sectors to consult for individuals and businesses. She works with organizations to streamline workflow processes and assist with improving productivity.

Eron Missick Eron Missick is a graduate of Freeport High (now, Bishop Michael Eldon High).

He attended the Milwaukee School of Engineering (“MSOE”) in Milwaukee, Wi. Eron completed an academic year of studies at Fachhochschule Lübek in Lübek, Germany in 2011 and is proficient in the German language. He returned to the U.S. and earned both a Bachelors of Science from MSOE in Electrical Engineering and a Bachelors of Science from Fachhochschule Lübek in Electrical Engineering with a specialty in Communications, Information and Media Technology in May of 2012. He worked at Dynamic Ratings as a Commissioning Engineer from June 2012-2016. He currently works as a Distribution Automation Engineer at WE Energies in Milwaukee.

Mechanical Engineering Mechanical Engineering is the broadest of all engineering and encompasses the design of mechanical systems.

Mechanical engineers use core physical principles to design and analyze manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, heating and cooling systems, transport systems, aircraft, watercraft, robotics, medical devices, weapons, and others.

Instructors Tomika Walkin Tomika is a graduate of Bishop Michael Eldon School in Freeport, Grand Bahama. She graduated from Florida International University in December 2016, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. During her time in college, she actively participated in various activities such as Habitat for Humanity, Adopt a Highway and Beach Clean-ups as well as Volunteering at various schools, teaching engineering related topics to students. She has served as Community Service Chairperson and Scribe within my Professional Engineering Fraternity, Theta Tau. She currently works at PharmaChem Technologies in the Engineering Department as a Project Engineer Trainee.

Markia Bowe Former Head Girl & Valedictorian of Queen's College Class of 2012 in Nassau Bahamas. Markia graduated with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering focused in Biological Engineering at Kettering University in Flint, Michigan. She has worked at Henry Ford Hospital in the Bone & Joint Center, OrthoMichigan, the Mechanical Engineering Department of Kettering University and done contractual jobs for TSR Automotive in various respects such as a researcher, medical scribe, and project manager. Technical Demonstration Exhibition Every year at BETA Camp we host an exhibition to highlight what students have learned within the various engineering disciplines offered at the camp. Furthermore, it gives the students a hand at presenting and applying all that they have learned. In previous years, it has been a judged competition, however this year, seeing that we reformatted the layout of the camp to allow students to discover more than one discipline we felt best not to have it judged, as their knowledge would be limited to one day.

Design Project Competition The culminating activity of each day and the camp is the design project competition (DPC). This is where students are placed into teams where they work to collaborate in solving a problem of national interest.

This year our theme was “Energy and the Environment for Everyone” and hence, from this we decided to build the DPC by tasking students to generate solutions to help sustain the environment as well as involve renewable sources of energy within our country. The objective of the design project is to help students utilize and develop skills such as collaboration, innovation, problem-solving, creativity, leadership, teamwork and critical thinking. Furthermore, it is the intent of this project to excite and catalyse entrepreneurship motivated by STEM solutions, allowing students to take part in the discussion and solution of our nation’s most pressing issues.

At the end of each day student groups are given time to research and prepare for the final presentation at the closing ceremony of the camp. Each time is assigned a mentor which is either a volunteer or an instructor to work with. Representatives from sponsor companies and local tech companies form the judging panel.

Design Project Outline “Energy and the Environment for Everyone” With the recent outbreak of landfill fires in New Providence, environmental fall out and huge potential of waste management, recycling and energy generation the Bahamas must assess how its residents play a role in ENERGY conservation and protection of the ENVIRONMENT. EVERYONE has a role to play in smart energy usage and protection of the environment, beginning in our own homes. Simple tasks like turning off lights when not in use, adjusting air conditioning temperatures, and using high efficiency appliances dictate how much energy we individually consume and our resultant carbon footprints.

Residents are faced with increasing energy costs and threats to personal and wildlife health. High energy costs limit our economy and damages to our environment reduce our natural resources (plants, animals, waters and minerals) As the world advances and ever more clearly witnesses the impact of climate change we have two choices: 1) allow our energy costs to increase and damage our environment or 2) create solutions to promote energy efficiency and protection of our environment.

What current solutions can the Bahamas implement? How can we take advantage of Bahamian resources to develop STEM based solutions to these issues?

The students of this year’s camp will research and develop feasible STEM based solutions geared towards improving the national status of energy efficiency and environmental protection. They will essentially answer the questions: How can we conserve energy in our homes? Are there feasible ways to generate electricity and reduce impact on the environment? What provisions can be made to protect the environment?

Hydroelectric Power: Tidal Energy

The water turbine drifts away from the standard formation of a turbine and uses kinetic energy from moving waves instead of the water from a dam, therefore allowing it to be placed in the sea, using one of The Bahamas’ most abundant resource.

The turbine specializes in the fields of engineering such as Civil, Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical and Environmental.

Compared to others water turbines, it would be more efficient because of the use of carbon fiber for propellers instead of heavier and more scarce metals.

Field Trips Freeport is known to be the industrial capital of the Bahamas, with many industrial companies that specialize in pharmaceuticals, to oil storage and transport, to breweries to plastics and much more. We took students to field trips at 4 companies on the island that were available during the time of camp for field tours.

All students had the opportunity to attend the field trip to BORCO, which was held on Monday, July 17th.

Then on Friday July 21st students were split into three groups to attend the other three locations based on preference and relevance to their engineering disciplines of choice.

Bahamas Oil Refining Company (Buckeye Partners Ltd) Polymers International Grand Bahama Power Company Sanitation Services

BORCO (Buckeye Partners Ltd) Buckeye Bahamas is a leader in petroleum products for the Caribbean region. It has over 26 million barrels of storage capacity for crude oil, fuel oil, diesel fuel, gasoline and components.

Products are imported from locations worldwide and stored or blended at Buckeye for export to regional consumers, key import locations in the Americas and long-haul markets in Asia.

Polymers International Ltd. Polymers is a major industrial company on Grand Bahama and produces expandable polystyrene used in foam products and is truly an international venture in that it exports products to Europe, the US Argentina and beyond. Polymers produces approximately 170 million lbs. of polystyrene beads annually, the majority of which are distributed to the Dart Container Corporation which is the world’s largest manufacturer of foam cups and containers.

Grand Bahama Power Company Ltd Grand Bahama Power supplies electrical power to the island of Grand Bahama from West End to Sweeting's Cay in the east. Grand Bahama Power is a totally integrated utility company serving the island's 18,800 customers.

Grand Bahama Power strives to be a quality organization, committed to cost-effective generation, transmission and distribution of electricity to its customers, while providing a safe and rewarding work place for its employees and a reasonable rate of return on investment. The utility has a gross generating capacity of 98 MW.

Sanitation Services Co. Ltd The Sanitation Services Co. Ltd is responsible for the collection and disposal of trash and performs solid and liquid waste management for commercial customers. Some of the services include Commercial Collection & Disposal, Construction & Demolition Collection & Disposal Residential Collection & Disposal, residential subscription and beyond these, they are tasked with the landscaping maintenance of the city of Freeport.

Keynote Speaker Carlos Palacious, a native of Nassau, Bahamas and was a former Head Boy of St. Anne’s School. He graduated as Salutatorian, Gentleman of the Year, and recipient of the National Pacesetters Award in Education. He then went on to complete his Diploma in Engineering from St. Mary’s University, Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Dalhousie University, and Master’s degree in Coastal and Oceanographic Engineering at the University of Florida. Carlos was the first Bahamian Coastal Engineer.

He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the Bahamas, USA, and Canada and is the Director of Operations at Caribbean Coastal Services Ltd. (CCS), which specializes in Engineering and Project Management. In addition to being a Design Engineer for The World in Dubai and all coastal works at Baha Mar, he was also a Senior Engineer and Project Manager for Van Oord Bahamas Ltd having responsibilities that included the three (3) Royal Bahamas Defense Force Base expansion projects.

His talk to the students at BETA Camp utilized the theme from the 90’s show Captain Planet which emphasized the 5 planeteers and each representing one of the 5 elements being earth, wind, fire, water and heart.

Final Expense Breakdown In 2017, our goal was to raise approximately $51,200. Additionally, we aimed at decreasing funds spent on travel and accommodations while allocating more funding to programming. Increased Family Island participation was one of our main objectives this year and hence, the move to Grand Bahama. Therefore, we intended to spend less on housing and travel for students.

We also had to scale back on marketing materials and reduce our budget to a critical budget where integral items would be purchased and all flexible items were excluded.

Therefore, to compensate for this our team is working on sourcing more sponsors, larger grants as well as international partners and sponsors to assist with this year’s camp.

At the culmination of our fiscal year, we did not achieve our fundraising target. Furthermore, our expenses exceeded what we had raised. Although the chart above displays a negative balance our accounts remain positive and our core team stepped in with personal funds for payments that were not covered by funds raised. Overall, we fell short of our target by $14,054.00. Nevertheless, we still achieved hosting one of our most successful camps in terms of student engagement and exposure to industrial companies in Grand Bahama.

It is said that “It takes a village to raise a child� and this can be extended to BETA camp, where we are raising students to become our nations talent force in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The Ministry of Education, Science & Technology is responsible for the regulation of all government educational, scientific and technological initiatives in the country of the Bahamas. Statoil SRP has been involved in the Bahamian community on numerous initiatives including Road Safety Improvements, scholarship programs, sports camps and literacy programs. The Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA) is the regulatory authority with responsibility for the electronic communications sector (ECS) in The Bahamas. Bahamas Society of Engineers (BSE)

BSE is a non-profit organization that seeks to promote engineering awareness in the many engineering disciplines in the Bahamas. BSE was a student sponsor last year and increased their sponsorship to Bronze to show their continued support for the BETA cause. BSE was also represented by LaToya Johnson, who was an instructor at the camp, and DeCosta Bethel, who was a judge in the final design project and technical exhibition.

Water and Sewerage Corporation

The Bahamas Water & Sewerage Corporation is managed under the Ministry of Works & Urban Development. It is responsible for managing, maintaining, distributing and developing the water resources of the Bahamas.

Grand Bahama Port Authority Ltd.

The GBPA is responsible for overseeing the residential and business development of Freeport, and providing duty free incentives for overseas business. The GBPA employs many STEM professionals and recognizes the value of promoting STEM to our youth, particularly those in Freeport. GBPA sponsored a

student for the inaugural 2014 BETA Camp and has renewed this commitment in the 2015 and 2016.

Van Oord Bahamas

Van Oord is a Marine Engineering company originally based in the Netherlands and expanding worldwide. One of the underlying principles of Van Oord’s sponsorship policy is to give something back to or do something special for the community in which they are active. Sharing knowledge and working together with local experts is also how they want to be involved in the environment in which they work.

Teaming up with research institutes, NGOs and other local partners is how they add value.

Student Sponsors Student sponsors gave $500 to sponsor a family island student’s attendance at the camp.

Doctor’s Hospital

Doctors Hospital was formerly named The Rassin Hospital, founded in 1955. Today, the 72-bed Doctors Hospital is the most modern acute care privately owned healthcare facility in The Caribbean with over 500 employees, and 200 highly trained and dedicated physicians. Doctor’s Hospital employs many STEM professionals and was a student sponsor at the 2015 BETA Camp.

PharmaChem Technologies

PharmaChem Technologies (Grand Bahama) Limited produces bulk pharmaceutical ingredients and registered intermediates. The company was founded in 1967 and is based in Freeport, Bahamas; PharmaChem employs many Bahamian engineers and supported the 2017 camp as a Student sponsor.

Jubilee Cathedral is a church that is focused on the will of God and committed to making their members and family feel right at home. Under the leadership of Bishop Godfrey and Iris Williams, they strive to provide an atmosphere where broken vessels can be made new! The church also provide classes and ministries for all ages that are taught and led by people who are passionate about the word of the Lord.

In addition Jubilee Cathedral runs two schools which are Sunland Baptist Academy and Jubilee Preschool. The church is known for its work in and throughout the community with a strong passion for giving back.

Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Academy

Mary Star of the Sea is a Catholic School and was opened in August of 1960 at a small house in Amusden Lane in Freeport City. When it opened, it had 20 pupils and three teaching sisters.

The school was started by the Most Reverend Bishop Paul Leonard Hagarty, Catholic Bishop of Nassau, in conjunction with Mr. Wallace Groves and the Grand Bahama Port Authority. In September 2014 Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic School and Grand Bahama Catholic High School were amalgamated with the school now named Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic Academy. The school is an all age school and prides itself on excellence, honor and truth.

Island Seas Resort

Island Seas Resort is an RCI Gold Crown resort located along the Williams Town Beach area. It is a small resort with 72 rooms and suites and offers personalized service to guests.

The Island Seas Resort offered accommodations for the full 18 family island and Nassau students in attendance at the camp as well as the chaperones and camp instructors and teaching assistants. These students came from the islands of New Previdence, Abaco, Exuma, Andros and the Berry Islands. The discount provided by Sandyport Beaches Resort was an equivalent of approx. $8,000.

WalCo Imports

WalCo is a Bahamian owned import-export company, with offices both in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Nassau, Bahamas. WalCo assisted the 2017 BETA Camp with in-kind sponsorship of their import services, allowing for engineering lesson materials that could not be purchased on –island to be delivered for the camp.

Bahamasair

Bahamasair was established in 1973 as a product of a newly established Independent Commonwealth of The Bahamas. The mandate was to provide a safe and reliable mode of air transportation throughout the archipelagic nation and internationally. The airline remains wholly owned by the Bahamas Government and continues to provide an ‘Essential Service’ bridging Nassau, the nation’s capital and the remote Family of Islands. Bahamasair sponsored the 2017 camp by providing discounted flight rates for our students traveling from the family islands and Nassau to Freeport.

Food Sponsors At the BETA Camp, lunch is fully provided for every student each day. Our food sponsors gave discounts and/or donations of food for the students, instructors and volunteers.

Aetos Holdings (Wendy’s and Marco’s Pizza)

Aetos Holdings operates the Wendy’s brand as well as the Marco’s pizza brand in the Bahamas. BETA was given a generous group discount on both brands which fed the students on 2 separate days.

Caribbean Bottling Company Ltd. (Coca Cola)

Caribbean Bottling Company (Bahamas) Ltd. (CBC) and its predecessor companies have serviced the Bahamas with Coca-Cola products for over 75 years. With the acquisition of T&C Refreshments in 2013, CBC is now also the distributor for Coca-Cola products in the Turks & Caicos Islands. In addition to the distribution of the Coca-Cola product line, CBC also offers Schweppes, Fanta, Sprite, Barq’s Root Beer, Dr. Pepper, Goombay Punch, Barritt’s Ginger Beer, Canada Dry, Vitamin Water, Dasani, Powerade, Minute Maid and Flavorful Juices. CBC donated 10 cases of water to this year’s camp.

Public Relations and Media An important aspect of the camp is ensuring that we have media coverage in order for the public to become more aware of the BETA Camp Initiative. We hope to gain traction that will lead to increased community support and wider participation of students throughout the Bahamas. Moreover, getting the message out is major form of recruitment for the camp. We had various forms of PR this year which included radio shows, articles in the Freeport News as well as coverage on ZNS during the week of the camp. Additionally, we used our social media accounts to advertise the camp, which was a very successful campaign in spreading the word.

Camp Outcomes Student Feedback It is our desire to ensure that we are indeed achieving the goals that we’ve set in terms of our purpose for hosting BETA Camp. In order to measure our success, we have students provide input and feedback through an entrance and exit survey. Summarized below are key aspects of how students viewed engineering before the camp and their overall views on attending BETA Camp. All scales were measure from 1-10 with one being the lowest and 10 being the highest.

Description of Engineers Students were asked to give three words that describe an engineer. The three most popular responses were:

Level of Interest& Understanding Prior to the camp, students were asked to give their level of interest in engineering, their level of understanding of what engineers do and their desire to become and engineer. They were then asked the same questions at the end of the camp to determine if the camp changed their perceptions in each area.

Camp Experience After the camp the students were asked to rate their experience in the camp and whether or not they would want to attend the camp again. There was a 90.6% student approval rating on this year’s camp experience with 85.8% expressing that they would attend the camp again next year.

New Partnership - ican SMART SUMMER CAMP The BETA team was invited to partner with the ICAN Community Ltd. and the Bahamas Red Cross to deliver the first annual Smart Summer Camp. S.M.A.R.T. (Science, Math and Reading Technology) Summer was developed to provide six weeks of fun and educational activities for ICAN’s afterschool program attendees and other students from the surrounding inner city. The camp took place at the ICAN Community Center in Chippingham in the weeks following the 4th Annual BETA Camp in Freeport, Bahamas. SMART Summer’s daily routine included hands on activities, lunch and field trips. As a very diverse camp the attendees varied from 1st grade up to 9th graders.

The BETA team contributed to the success of SMART Summer through logistical, marketing and curriculum support. Several of BETA’s instructors facilitated educational presentations, activities and a field trip that exposed camp goers to the basic concepts of computer science/ programming, solar power, civil, mechanical and industrial engineering.

ICAN’s tech friendly facilities and provision of laptops enabled Mr. Edison Hanchell and Mr.Travis Miller to teach the students through programming/ coding activities. Mr. Albrion Symonette coordinated BETA’s contribution and facilitated the plant tour at the Caribbean Bottling factory. Edison, Travis and Albrion each got to share their personal stories, education and professional experience with the students.

Through our contribution, we were able to emphasize the importance of Science, Technology Engineering & Math and the variety of opportunities present in the sector.

ICAN history: ican Community Ltd. is a registered Non-Profit Organisation founded in 2006. ican runs programming After School (usually Wed-Fri, 3:30-5:30PM) and during the Summer break (the entire ten weeks).

Over the past 10 years, ican has conducted Summer Camps for ican kids with core programming being Literacy and Numeracy and satellite programming including agriculture and farming, art, social studies, science and environmental awareness. ican camps have traditionally been offered free of charge and campers received all materials, a hot lunch and field trips at no cost to them or their families. Camp numbers continue to increase from year to year as we started with only six children in 2006 and hosted 137 children in 2015.

As ican’s mission includes encouraging curiosity and a desire for learning through the use of meaningful materials and activities that promote interest, interaction, exploration and understanding; our Summer Camp simply must be SMART!

Future Outlook BETA’s mission is centered on three tenants:  To strengthen STEM education  To create opportunities for engineers  To address vital infrastructure issues throughout the Bahamas When planning the inaugural camp, a 10-year plan was put in place to impact these three areas. This plan has progressed and continues to evolve.

Strengthen STEM Education BETA’s desire is to ensure that the exposure of engineering to Bahamian youth exists. Securing a future of driven and technically equipped engineers is a fundamental initiative of BETA. There are several directives to which BETA will achieve this facet of the mission.

BETA Camp In order to increase the efficacy, quality and success of the BETA Camp over the next 5 years the BETA team plans to do the following within specific periods of time: Table 25 - BETA Camp Outlook and Goals

Goal 2016 Targets Expand BETA Camp to both Grand Bahama and New Providence, while inviting students from the near outer islands such as Abaco, Bimini, Grand Cay, Andros, Eleuthera etc. to attend.

Create a separate Mechanical Engineering stream so that mechanical engineering can be taught in depth.

Six field trip options were included in the 2016 Camp and were based on each engineering discipline In 2017 students went to various companies in Grand Bahama with a need and presence of science and engineering professionals (BORCO, GB. Power, Polymers, Sanitation Services)

2020 Targets Increase the overall number of target students with a focus on female recruitment, with a target of 50-50 female-male enrolment in the next 5 years.

In the 2016 camp, the ratio of female to male was 46% females and 54% males, which shows growth from previous years.

2017 we did not achieve the target and had a 61% male and 39% female ratio but will work to refocus in 2018.

We plan to include instructors and volunteers in this target for the 2018 camp.

2025 Targets Establish satellite camps on targeted Family Islands

On Target

First hosting a camp in Grand Bahama will lay the groundwork for potential satellite camps. There are also areas for collaboration with BluePrint Talkshow on virtual camps through streaming and/or radio broadcasting

High School Curriculum The BETA team realizes that it’s also important to engage students throughout the academic year.

Hence, it is the intent to work with the Ministry of Education to produce a curriculum that can give students a pre-engineering background that will provide an advantage upon entering college. Such a curriculum will be based on the following and will be executed within specified timeframes.

After School Programs Beyond the in-school curriculum, it is important that students with keen interest in STEM have avenues to foster and develop that interest. After-school programs are great ways to keep students involved in learning beyond the classroom. This after-school program will be based on a more hands-on approach to learning and discovering all that STEM entails in terms of its introduction to its applications.

In 2016 President of BETA, Trenicka Rolle, began an after school program in Grand Bahama and included three high schools. She chartered a junior chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers, called NSBE Jr. The chapter met bi-weekly and also travelled to the 43rd and 44th National Convention in Boston, MA and Kansas City, MO. Currently in talks with Dr. Carlton Watson to initiate a UB STEM academy for high school students for 2018 and beyond

2020 Targets Develop a detailed On Target curriculum, which can be easily implemented universally by school teachers and/or volunteers across New Providence and test within specified schools.

2025 Targets Expand the completed program curriculum to Freeport schools and the family islands

Nationwide Competitions In order to gauge national support of STEM initiatives as well as an excitement among students, the BETA team hopes to introduce national competitions for Bahamian students. This will not only help students to become more excited and engaged in STEM but help to build teamwork, problem solving skills and creativity to solving national issues within the country. Based on outcomes from the BETA Camp Design Project Competition, students have the ability to work together and develop innovative solutions that can be viable solutions to current and pressing national issues.
