It’sthattimeofyearyetagain…countdowntothegreatesteverSt.Patsforthe year2023.Whetheryou’reaconsistentattenderorhavebeenaninfrequent visitorsincegraduating,I’dliketoencourageyoutodropbythechapterhouse thisyear!BAAAisputtingonaBBQfortheactives&alumni.Beverages, food,andgameswillbeprovided.

Itwasagrandtimelastyearandwillbeagainthisyear.Isaythiswiththe utmostsincerityandhypocrisysinceIwillbemissingthisyear’sSt.Pats celebration.Oneofmyveryownandhighlyrespectedpledgebrotherswillbe gettingmarriedtheweekendofSt.Pats.Consequentlyhewillbetakingthe pledgeclassesof‘13,‘14,‘15,etc.withhim.Despiteourwell-writtenand well-intentionedpetitionwewereunabletogethisweddingmoved.

Okaybadjokeaboutthepetition,butwewillcontinuetogivehimalotofgrief becausewelovehimandthat’swhatpledgebrothersdo.Weknowtheworld doesn’trevolvearoundSt.Pats(don’ttelltheBoard),butitisundeniablyan incredibletimetoreconnectandmakenewconnectionswithbrothers,friends, andfamily.Soifyoucanfindthetimetovisit,youwon’tregretit.

livinginaformerSovietStateatthetimeoftherecountedstory.Onemightguess thatSpikewasworkingasasecretagenttospyonformerSovietUnionstates,but onewouldbewrong.Spikewasamechanicalengineerwhoworkedintheenergy industry.AstandardoutcomeaftergraduatingfromMissouriS&T–thepremier engineeringschoolinthestate.Butofcourse,describingSpikeonlyasa

relatesthenameSpiketoanoutgoing,rockbandplayerorperhapsatoughkid withtattoosthatdoesn’ttakeanygrieffromanyone.It’sanicknamethattypically hasastory.Butthisonedoesn’t.WhenIaskedMikeaboutthenickname,he chuckledandexplained,“Therewasn’tmuchtoit,honestly.Someofmyhigh schoolclassmatesrhymedMikewithSpike.Theysaidit’dbemynicknameandI trulyneverthoughtitwouldstick.Butitdid.”Althoughtheoriginstoryofthe nicknamewasabitanticlimactic,Spikehascertainlyliveduptohiscool

nickname.Again,I’mgettingabit aheadofmyself.

Wherewerewe?Ohyes,Spikewasa goodkid.Heearnedgoodgradesand workedatthetownsquare’sWestern Auto.Hefinishedinthetopofhis graduatingclassand wasfullof potential. Therewere maybe4 outof the45 that wentto college. I’m somewhat generalizing here,butthe resteitherbecame farmersorspenttimein prison.Spikeadmittedthathisclass wasnotexactlythebest representationofhistown.The classesbeforeandafterhadabout60 kidswithaboutamajoritygraduating topursuecollegedegrees.

WhatseparatedSpikefromsomeof hisformerclassmatesmayhavebeen someoftherolemodelshehad growingup.Hesaidsincerely,“Oneof mybiggestmentorswastheWestern Autoowner,Max.WhenIwasgetting readytomovetoRollatobeginmy firstsemester,I’llneverforgetwhathe toldme.‘Spike,you’reagoodkidand haveabrightfuture.Justremember thatwhenyou’reinAlbanyyoushine likeadiamondinagoat’sass.But whenyougotoRolla,it’sgoingtobe different.’Maxcouldn’thavebeen

moreright.”

Inthesummerof1979,rightbefore Spikewouldbeginhisfirstsemesterat S&T,hehadattendedaKArush event,afloattrip.Thegentlemen livinginthehouseatthetimehadwon himoverandhe signedhisbidat conclusion ofthe event. He was

brimming with excitementto startthisnext chapterinhislife.

Itwasn’tallsunshineandrainbows though.Schoolwastoughandtested himmorethanhehadexperienced beforeinAlbany.Spikesaid,“Iwasa veryveryaveragestudent.Andifmy pledgeclasswashere,theywouldtell youthatwouldbeagenerous statement.Ireallydidjustenoughto getbyatthattime.Idon’thaveany regretsnecessarilybecausethe experiencesIhadhelpedmebecome whoIamtoday.ButI’dbelyingifI didn’tsayIcouldhaveworkedharder andcouldhavemadesomebetter decisions.”Findingawaytopass classeswasnottheonlystruggle Spikefaced.Healsostruggledwith findingmoneytopayforthose classes.Spikeexplained,“Icame fromahumblebackground.Ididn’t

havealotofmoneyandneitherdid myparents,soIwasbasicallyonmy own.WhenIthinkbacktothattimeat Rolla,EdSchmidtwasaguythat reallyhelped.Healwayshadalot goingon.Icouldcallhimupwhen thingsweretight,andhealwayshada jobformetomakesomemoney.He understoodkids.Hegavemealotof advicethroughoutmyyearsatRolla. I’vegotafeelingI’mnottheonlyguy thatbelievesthisaboutEd.”Spike onlyhadpositivememoriesofKAand hisbrothers.DuringhistimeinRolla, hehadservedasIV,Corresponding Secretary,andearnedaGuard positioninSt.Pats.

comebacktoRollaandearnhis degreeinMechanicalEngineering whichhedidwithmucheffortand perseverance.

Thistimearound,Spikelandedamore stablejobasastaffengineerfora powerplant.Atfirstitwas overwhelmingforhim.Butitdidn’ttake longbeforehiscuriosityovertookhim. Spikesaidfondly,“Forthefirsttime, walkingaroundthatplantIfeltmyinner engineer,orwhateveryouwanttocall it,takeover.Ibecamefascinatedwith theplant.Justamillionsillyquestions startedtopopinmyhead.Iwantedto knoweverything.Startingwiththe basics.Whatwasthepurpose ofthedifferentequipmentand howdiditwork?Whydidwedo certainthingsandwastherea betterwaytodothings?”

Aftergraduatingwithadegreein PetroleumEngineering,thingswould notgeteasierforSpike.Hedidgeta jobrightafterschool.However,justa fewmonthsaftergettingthejob,he wascaughtupinaslewoflayoffsthat wereoccurringintheOil&Gas industry.Hecouldnotseemtocatcha break.Hedidnotpanic.Hedecidedto

Spike’sapproachofalways lookingforwaystoimprove paidoffbigtimeinthelong term.Managementappearedto flagSpikeasahighperformer earlyonandclimbedtheladder quickly.It'sworthmentioning aroundthistimethatSpike recallshisfamilypressuringhim tocheckoutEurope.They wantedhimtospendhismoney onsomenewexperiences.But hewasnotaboutit.Headamantly turneddowntheirsuggestionssaying, “I’veneverevenbeentotheGrand CanyondespitelivinginArizonafor eightyears.I’veneverbeento Vermont.Therewasstillsomuchleftto seeanddiscoverintheUnitedStates. Ihadzerointerestingoingoverseas,

anywhere.”

Spikedidnotgooverseas,insteadhe continuedtofocusonhiscareer.He quicklybecametheoperations superintendentwhooversawallthe plantoperators.Thenjustthreeyears laterearnedanotherpromotionby becomingtheplantsuperintendentofa differentplantthatwasasmaller operationbutdealtwithallnew technologywhichwasachallenge.

Spikedivulgedintooneofhisfavorite storiesduringthistimeatthissecond plant,“WhenIwasworkingatthe plant,therewerethesespecifictests thatweneededtoconductforour generatorcoils.Ifacoilfailed,we wouldhavetoreplacethecoils immediately.Abadcoilcouldleadtoa generatorfailurewhichisterriblenews.

Wedidnothavethereplacementcoils onhand.Wehadtoputinaspecial ordertotheturbinesupplierwhowould manufacturethesecoils.Sincethere wasnowaytoknowwhichcoilswere goodvsbadaheadofthetest,we wouldorderabigbulkofcoilsto ensurewehadenough.Weordered

thecoils,conductedthetests,andhad three(3)coilsleftover.Iaskedthemif theywouldbewillingtopurchasethe coilsbackandtheytoldmetogo poundsand.Thiswasobviouslynot whatIwashopingbutokay.Fast forwardabout6monthslater,and guesswhoIgetacallfrom?Thecoil supplier.Theyhadconstructedanew plantinVirginiathatrequiredthese exactcoils,speciallymade.Theywere exactly(3)coilsshortforoneofthe generatorsrequiredtogettheplant running.Theplantwasalreadybehind schedulesotheycouldnotwaitfor manufacturing.Inaddition,therewas abadwinterstormcomingthrough thatnextweekend.Theywerein desperateneedofthesecoils.Spike waswillingtohelp,butatafairprice. Hegavethemanofferwhichcovered thecoilstoragefeeoverthelastfew monthsandcalleditgood.However, thiswasjustonemoreobstacle.The supplierhadnowaytosourcefreight fromMissouritoVirginia.Theyagreed topayforthefreight,butIhadto sourceit.Thedealwasgoingtofall throughifwedidn’tgetthisfiguredout beforethewinterstorm,soIcalledup Ed.Iaskedhimifhecouldflythese coilstoVirginiabutunfortunately,he hadsoldhisplanes.Hedid,however, haveabuddyinMemphiswhowas willingtotakeonthisjob.Spikegotin touchwithEd’sfriendtoworkoutthe priceandcoordinatedetails.He offeredupapricetodothework,which Idoubled…Also,thiswasnoeasyfeat wewerethrustingonhim,sohe deservedtheextracashforhelping themoutofthisjam.Theplanwas executedalmostperfectly.Therewasa smallproblemwiththeplane.There

wasafuelleak,buttheyfixeditatthe STLairportandEd’sbuddygotthe coilsdeliveredjustbeforethestorm.It wasawin-winsituationallaround.We lookedlikeheroes.Ooursupplierwas happy.OurMemphisflierwashappy. AndallbecauseEdknewaguy.Ireally couldgoonandonaboutEd,justa greatguyreally.”

Fastforwardjustfiveyearsandhewas recommendedforanotherpromotiontoleadpartofhiscompany’s unregulatedtradingbusinessselling commodities.Thecompanywas strugglingwithfindingpeopletomove toKansasCitytodothistypeof work.Manyoftherecenthires camefromNewYorkandlet’s justsaytheywerealittle highmaintenance. Corporateleadershipnow wantedtohiresomeone internal.Someonethey trustedandsomeonethat couldlearnthebusiness. DespiteSpikehavingno backgroundinselling commodities,hiscompanyknew hewastheguy.Heranthis businesssuccessfullyfor5years beforehisnextopportunitycame.

Hisnextpromotionhadhimoverseeing severalpowerplantsinKansas, Missouri,andColorado.Thenjustsix monthslateranopportunityinAustralia cameuptorunoneoftheelectrical distributioncompaniesinthestateof Victoria.Theopportunitywastoogood topassup,soheandhisfamilymade theleap.TheywereinAustraliafortwo yearsandthenmovedbacktothe stateswhenSpikewasofferedajobas

theCEOofregulatingallutilitiesforhis companyforeightstatesandtwo Canadianprovinces.

Spike’sriseisquiteimpressiveandit’s difficulttodoitjusticeinourspotlight piece.Therearesomanymoredetails toeachofhiscareerroles,memories, andbusinessendeavorsdiscussed duringourconversation.Allofitwas exceptionallyinterestingandbelongs inaSpikebiography.Igetthesense thatmaynotbesomethinghe’s interestedin,givenhishumble demeanor,butourconversationwas quiteentertaining.

Spike’snextadventurebeganwhenhe acceptedaroleasaRegionalVice Presidentforapowercompany,AES, whichwasbasedinArlington,VA.AES hadahugepresenceinRussia, Kazakhstan,andUkraine.Theposition preferredsomeonewhocouldspeak Russian,whichSpikecouldnot.But onceagain,hiscompanyoverlooked

thisbecauseofhisotherqualifications. Givenallhisexperienceandwhatthe companywastryingtoaccomplish, theyfelthecouldgetbywitha translator.Theywereright.

SpikemovedtoKazakhstansoonafter acceptingthe roleandhad apartmentsin Almaty,London, andUkraine whichhe’dstay atfordifferent periodsoftime. Spikesaid, “Therewere issuesof corruptionin Kazakhstanand Ukraine.The waythey conducttheir businessis unlikeours. Businessethics aren’treallya thing.Corruption wasaconstant issue,butAES

hadastrong complianceprogramwhichallowedme tobecomfortablewithjustsayingno. Thiscreatedobstaclesthatour competitorsintheregiondidnothave toworryabout.Yousee,the governmentwasconstantlytryingto shakeyouforadditionalmoney.Our competitionwaspredominantlyowned bylocalindividualsthatcouldn’tsay no.Asaresult,ourcompanyendedup incourtoftenandpaidmanyfines.We chalkedituptothecostofdoing business.Thegovernmentwaswilling

tocrossboundarieswhenattempting to“explaintheirposition”.Irecallon severaloccasionsbeingthreatened. Theywouldnotonlythreatenme,but myfamily.Theywouldsometimespick meupandtakemetodarkroomsto interrogateme.Iftheyeverstartedto getuncivilized,I wouldthreaten togettheUS ambassador involved.That usuallysolved theproblem. Oneparticularly badincident occurredin 2008.Thiswas duringthe financialcrisis. The government demandedthat ourcompany prepayour taxeswhichisa crazynotion. Accordingto theirownlaws youcannotdo this,butthey wentarounddemandingthisofall profitablecompaniesconducting businessintheircountry.Wellaswe’ve discussedbeforeIturnedthemdown. Theywentaroundtogettheothersto pay,andtheyallcavedoneafterthe other,butwestoodourground.And thiscreatedabigproblem.OurChief LegalOfficerinKazakhstanhad receivedwordthattherewasawarrant outformyarrest.Iwastoldtopackmy bagsandgetoutofthecountryasfast asIcould.IbookedatickettoMoscow

andthentoLondonsincetherewere nodirectflightsfromKazakhstanto London.I’mnotgoingtolie,Iwas scared.Imadeittotheairportand foundmyflightwasdelayed.Ihad decidedIwasgoingtopaytoenterthe VIPloungeandattempttolaylow there.Youstillhadtogothrough immigrationandallthatbutifyoupaid $100bucks,yougainedentryandthe airportofficialsdidn’taskmany questions.Guestsweretreatedvery well.Theyhadcomfortablechairs, serveddrinks,allowedyoutocarry extrabags,etc.Acoupleguysfrom customscametocheckmypassport andIcouldimmediatelytellsomething wasoff.Theytookmypassportand weregoneforaverylongtime. Eventuallytheycamebackand reluctantlygavememypassport.I suspecttheyknewtherewasawarrant outformyarrest,butIwasintheVIP lounge.Itwouldhavebeenverybad PRandnotgoodbusinesstohaveone oftheirVIPguestsarrestedsotheylet megoontoMoscow.It’salmostfunny lookingbackonitnow–theVIPlounge savedme.IstayedinLondonforabout fourmonthsuntilIwasgiven assurancesbytheKazakhstan authoritiesthatIwouldnotbe arrested.”

Nottoomuchlater,Spikewasreadyto startenjoyingthenextchapterofhis life.Alifewherethingscouldbealittle morelaidback.Wherefamilyisclose, andthingsareabitlessstressful. Spikestated,“EventuallyIfeltenough wasenough.Ihadsomanyincredible friendsandmostlygreatmemories workingandlivingoverseas.Butliving inthispartoftheworldwhenyou’renot

fromthere,itwearsyoudown.Imade enoughmoneyforaboyfromAlbany, MO(onewhohadnoaspirationsto traveloutsidethecountrymightIadd) andwasreadyforhome.Icameback toKansasCity,retiredin2017,andI lovebeingback.Mostofmyfriends andfamilyliveinthearea.Iam seriouslyhappytobeawayfromallthe workstressandfocusonfamily.My seconddaughterisgettingreadyto starthighschoolsoI’mmentally preparingforthat(haha).Myoldest daughterlivesinManhattan,NYandI gettovisither.It’snicebecauseshe’s grownintojustafantasticperson. Whenwevisither,thereareseveral Ukrainianrestaurantswealwaysdine at.ThatisonethingImissthatIdon’t getinKC–theGeorgianfood.

AsfarashobbiesIlovetofishand haveaplaceatthelake.Justbeingon thewaterandtakingmydaughterout therehasbeennice.MyfamilyandIgo toCanadaonceayearforafishingtrip too.Ialsohavefoundmyselfinan expensivehobbycollectingcoinsbut that’saboutalltoreportatthistime.”

I’dliketoendthearticlewithapieceof adviceSpikegaveduringour conversation.It’sespeciallyapplicable toyoungeralumnibutcanbegood advicetoallnomatterthestageinlife you’rein:“Ifyou'vemadesome mistakesalongyourway,beitpoor workhabits,notstayingfocused,or applyingyourself,justknowit'snever toolatetoturnitaround.Youhavea wholelifeaheadofyou.Youcanwake uponedayanddecideyou'regoingto shiftupagear.”

Theprocessislong,andhadtobewell plannedoutbyaCudgelChairwhois electedbythefraternity.In2013that CudgelChairwasnoneotherthan TerranceDeanFeldewerth.Wehadtwo yearstoprepareasmakingaproper Cudgelthatcouldwinthecompetition cantakewelloverayear.Westartby diggingthecedartreeoutoftheground, locallyprovidedbyourAlumniEd SchmidtandJimSower’sland.Digging thetreeoutofthegroundcantake months,evenwiththeuseofmodern farmequipment.Thebiggesttime consumingtaskisthe“snakes”(roots), whichhavetobedugoutbyhandsoas tonotdamagethem.Wethendrillout thetreecarefullytohollowoutthecenter whileslowlyburningitoutwith kerosene.Oncethetreehasbeenhollowed wefinallyseparatethetrunkintotwohalves andsetituponsawhorsestodryoutfor thewinter.Whiledryinggettingallthebark anddirtoffinthemeantimehelpedwith savingtimeinthespringsemester.

competinginSt.Patsisthateveryone fromyourorganizationhasawayto contributetowinningandformeitwas workingontheCudgel.Afterthepainting isdonewespendaboutaweekapplying aclearcoatofpolyurethanetosealthe Cudgelandthenit’stimetorelaxand win.

mybrothers.Manylatenights/early morningswerehad.Terryrecallsworking untilDebbie,ourcookatthetime,came inforbreakfastthatmorningwhichwas roughly5AM.PerTerryheestimatesthat wespentroughly2,000manhours puttingtogetherthatCudgel.Whenit’s finallycarvedandsmoothfinishedwe paint.Ican’tstresshowimportantthe paintingwasandinafewcaseswehave carvingsthatweren’tperfect,butsomeof ourbrothersbroughtthemtolifewith paint.That’soneofthebestthingsabout

Thefloatthata numberofour otherbrothers workedonwas truly impeccable. TheDiscovery Shuttlerequired justasmuch workasthe Cudgelandif therewasone thingI rememberfrom workingonit washowmuch timeittakesto pompafloat thatlarge.Of courseit wouldn’tbea properfloat fromRollaiftherewasn’tsome engineeringputintothedesign.Wehad somepistonssetupthatwereabletotilt theshuttleduringtheparadeaswellas cannonsthatfired“jetfuel”pompsoutof thethrusters.

AsengineeringstudentsIstilldon’tknow howwefoundthetimetocompeteand producethesemasterpiecesalongwith competinginotherfollyevents,butI’m gladwedid.Ifeltitbroughtusallcloser andshowedwhatalittlebitofteamwork andtalentcanputtogether.
