Spring into Health, Weight Loss and Less Pain
Written by Expert Contributor Marc Belitsky, D.C., D.A.C.R.B., Broomall Total Health Center
The sweet smell of warm weather is in the air! This spring/ summer season is a long-awaited welcome after an exceptionally long COVID winter. Finding that your warm weather clothes fit a little snuggly due to the extra COVID/ winter weight you’ve accumulated? Embrace this season of change with a new healthier plan for weight loss and exercise.
The Good Old Days
Gone are the days of eating three large meals each day, and each meal now typically includes more calories than a person needs in a single day. That kind of eating is prevalent in the statistics of heart disease, diabetes and obesity, all of which continue to rise due to poor diet and an epidemic of inactivity.
Chiropractic Physicians are specialists in the entire body’s system, so who better to help you out of pain and achieve improved health and weight loss?
Lifestyle Makeover
• Exercise for at least 20 to 30 minutes 3 – 4 days a week.
• To avoid extra fat and sugar, eat out less frequently.
• Brown-bagging your lunch can also help control fat/sugar intake, especially if you include nutritious fruits, vegetables and grains.
• Limit your intake of alcohol and quit smoking.
Dietary Makeover
• Eat more raw foods, and when possible, buy organic, for lower amounts of toxic pesticides and heavy metals.
• To help prevent digestive disorders, heart disease and colon cancer, consume 25-30 grams of fiber a day. Reliable sources of fiber are whole-grain breads and cereals, beans, nuts and some fruits and vegetables.
• Drink 8 – 10 8-ounce glasses of water a day. Remember that coffee, tea, soft drinks and alcohol dehydrate (flush water out of) your system.
Eat More from the Garden
If you’re considering a more fruits and vegetables-based diet, keep the following tips in mind:
• Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables to consume a broad range of nutrients.
• If you experience increased tiredness, have your B12 and iron levels checked.
Get Out of Pain
• Pain is the leading cause of lack of exercise. Pain also causes you to crave unhealthy carbohydrates.
• Remember to consume dark green vegetables, oils, nuts and seeds, which are sources of magnesium, fatty acids and many other vitamins and minerals.
Finally, don’t “self-prescribe.” Consult a health care practitioner to determine what supplements are best for you. If you have pain, headaches, fatigue or cardiac problems, seek professional advice. Start NOW so you can enjoy a great summer as a new healthier you!
