by Liz Burnett
August Sproul Lanes Student of the Month
The August Sproul Lanes Student of the Month is Maggie Doogan, who will be a Senior at Cardinal O’Hara High School this fall Maggie received a Certificate of Achievement, and a “Pizza Bowl” gift certificate courtesy of Sproul Lanes, our Sponsor of this program
Maggie has demonstrated Excellence in Service to local communities in many ways For the past two summers, she has worked as a Swim Instructor for Marple Friends & Neighbors Sponsor Speer Swim School. Owner Emily Speer enthusiastically reports that Maggie “keeps her commitments and is great with kids!” Maggie has also helped coach many of Emily’s daughter’s friends in basketball camp.
Since Maggie’s freshman year at O’Hara, she has honed her own basketball skills while serving as a Girls’ Varsity Basketball Team member She also plays on O’Hara’s Girls’ Varsity Volleyball Team Despite the “unusual” 2020–2021 school year, Maggie’s basketball team — O’Hara’s Lady Lions — won the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) 5A State Championship on March 27 In her senior year, Maggie hopes to have the honor and responsibility of serving in a leadership position as Team Captain.

Maggie’s willingness and ability to give back to the local community has been nurtured by her family’s tradition of helping in local food bank kitchens, to make meals for the homeless Maggie was also an Altar Server for her church when she was in 7th and 8th grades And as a Community Service Corps (CSC) member at O’Hara, Maggie participates in outreach programs such as Operation Santa Claus (gifts for children who live in local shelters) and Big Buddy (helping and mentoring a local 2nd-grader).
Perhaps Maggie’s favorite school subject — Math — will influence her choice for a college major One thing Maggie knows for sure, however, is that she wants to play basketball in college!
