A Guide to Various Funeral Services: Memorial, Funeral and a Wake

I

f you’re preparing for a funeral or will soon be attending one, it’s important to know about the different types of services that may be involved. There will be a funeral or memorial service, but there could also be a wake or viewing.

By better understanding the meaning of each, you’ll be able to make a more informed decision on which services to attend.

The first service might be a wake. Less common than the other three services, a wake stems from a traditional Catholic ceremony.

The original tradition was for the family to stay awake through the night, to provide spiritual protection to the deceased. A more modern interpretation of a wake can also include a short ceremony at the funeral home, either the day before the funeral or immediately before, led by a priest who often recites the rosary.

A viewing is less structured than a wake. It’s a time when the deceased’s family and friends gather in a room with the deceased person, who is in an open or closed casket. Everyone is encouraged to share stories, connect with each other, and pay a personal tribute to the deceased. This can be a very helpful opportunity for everyone to share their grief informally in a more comfortable environment. Attendees pay their respects to the deceased and their family members. Viewings usually occur an hour or two before the funeral service. continued on page 5

T

he Barry-Cottones are an exciting and active family in the Marple community. Brigit has lived in the area her whole life and Michael joined her in 2013. Their story is one of living out their dream life, overcoming the bumps along the way with steady hearts and unwavering resolve. Things have always seemed to move fast for Michael and Brigit, but they have never hesitated to make the life for themselves they’ve always wanted.

Michael was raised in Layfayette Hill and attended St. Joe’s Prep and Cabrini University. During school, Michael was very involved in lacrosse and said it was his favorite parts of high school and college. His love of the comradery in the sport kept him involved and when he can, he still plays lacrosse with his friends today. He studied kinesiology at Cabrini, and after graduation, he worked for USLI from 2007 to late 2009 where he met Brigit.

Brigit also started working for USLI in 2007. Growing up in Newtown Square, she attended the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur in Villanova. She spoke fondly of growing up in the area and of her mother’s home healthcare company, Pennsylvania Agency of Nurses, that has been in Newtown Square for over 32 years.

The business was very successful and her mother still serves as the CEO to this day. After high school, Brigit attended Davidson College and received a B.A. in Sociology there. In the same way that Michael was always passionate about lacrosse, Brigit was always a swimmer. She swam for Notre Dame and four years at Davidson as well. After college, she continued her involvement by becoming a coach at Aronimink Golf Club and later a head coach for her alma mater, Notre Dame where she still coaches today.

It’s no surprise, then, that the two met at the company gym in 2009. Michael said it didn’t take long after their first meeting that Brigit got right to the point.

“One day when we were talking at the gym, Brigit said ‘So, are you going to ask me on a date or what?’”

Their first date, at Dave & Buster’s in the city, was a perfect combination of their shared enjoyment of competition and activity. “Yeah, I’m not one to wait for things to happen,” Brigit joined in, laughing. “I like to get things done.”

Shortly after they started dating, Michael left USLI to work for Vanguard for 5 years and then in 2015 moved on to the company he works for today, AmerisourceBergen. Michael says he likes the company’s “challenging and dynamic” atmosphere and that he has really enjoyed his time with them. Brigit continued on with USLI and has worked there for 12 years. “The work environment is very progressive,” she said. “It’s a very diverse workforce and there is a lot of opportunity and room for growth.”

While working there, Brigit has moved into several different roles.

In 2013, Michael and Brigit got married at Saint Anastasia and celebrated at Aronimink Golf Club. The Barry-Cottones had goals that they wanted to achieve in their first year: Move into their new home and start a family. The first year proved difficult immediately, as a fire in December 2012 burned down their new home right before they were to move in. For six months, they lived in temporary housing while the house was being repaired.

“It was really hard,” Brigit began. “But the company working on the house, County Line Construction, did such a great job.

All through the six-month process, they were great to work with.” The Barry-Cottones persevered through this difficult situation, and by the end, they finally had the new home in Marple that they always wanted.

After moving into their new home, their next dream was starting a family. After a year, it seemed like they would not be able to conceive, so Michael and Brigit began looking into options for adoption. “Again, I’m not one to wait around for things to happen,” Brigit joked. continued on page 8

Resident Feature The process was surprisingly fast, a blessing for the BarryCottones, who were expecting the process to be long and complicated. In August 2015, after setting up a profile with an adoption agency, they were soon paired up with the birth mother of their future son. Adding to the swiftness of the process, the birth mother was due in six weeks.

“If nine months feels like it goes quickly, six weeks flew by,” Michael joked. The day before the scheduled C-section, the Barry-Cottones met with the birth mother and they all went out for dinner. Everyone got along well immediately, and the next day, Brigit was able to be in the room when their son was born. Six weeks from setting up their profile with the adoption agency, Michael and Brigit brought their baby boy, Vincent, home to Marple.

Vin is now three and a half years old and has brought joy and warmth to their family that is beyond measure. “He is something special, and he gets none of it from us. He has such a big personality!” Brigit said. “Yeah, we think he’s going to be a movie star or professional athlete,” Michael added with a smile.

To add to their recent fortunes, the Barry-Cottones were overwhelmed with joy when they discovered Brigit was pregnant in the fall of 2018. Just a few short years prior, they had thought they may never have children but they now have two healthy and happy boys. Cormac is now 12 weeks old and has quickly

become a perfect fit for the family. Vin has been completely positive about the new addition to the family. “Cormac is such a great baby.” Brigit commented, “He’s so relaxed and easy-going. Even though Vin is usually high energy, he is very gentle around him. ” Before having two small children, Brigit and Michael volunteered for Mainline Animal Rescue where Brigit adopted their first dog in 2009, Riley, a Jack Russell. They also adopted Guinness, a Pitbull pointer mix, from Main Line Animal Rescue and Brody, another Pitbull, whom they adopted from Delco SPCA. Unfortunately Brody passed away December 31, 2017 and is very much missed. Even though they have a lot going on in their lives with children, dogs, and work, they still find time to work out and be active. “People around the neighborhood always tell me they see Michael running everywhere,” laughed Brigit. Fitness remains important for both of them even through life’s craziness.

Looking back, it’s amazing to see the changes in their lives. In just a few years, they have gone from a newly married couple without a home to a family with a beautiful new house in Marple and two children. Their perseverance and go-getter attitudes have taken them through years together and into what is sure to be a wonderful future ahead for their family. M

Budgeting for A NEW ROOF

D

elaware County’s homes range from the early 1900’s (and earlier), all the way up to the new construction homes built this year. With over 100 years of changes in the construction industry, roofing hasn’t changed all that much. It’s still an extremely difficult and dangerous job, and the general principles of installation remain the same. Though it may appear simply as shingles atop of your home, an existing roof assembly in this area may comprise of generations of different roofing systems; meaning multiple layers of different products including shingles, plywood, cedar shake, asbestos tiles, and even natural slate.

worthless if they’re installed over subsequent layers of roofing or an unacceptable roof deck. It is not uncommon for us to see roofs less than five years old that failed entirely because they were installed over questionable plywood or pine decking.

So, while you may cringe at the thought of paying increased costs, you should want everything done correctly to protect your investment in a new roof.

Purchasing a new roof can be a daunting task for a homeowner.

In budgeting for a roof project, there are a few factors that will affect cost: • Pitch/Height/Difficulty of the roof • Number of layers • Condition of the plywood/decking • Existing attic ventilation (or lack thereof)

The national average life of an asphalt shingle roof is only about 12 years, though manufacturers test and rate their products for 20, 30, or even 50 years! Aside from weather events, the main reason is faulty workmanship. The best materials are

A homeowner can easily identify the type of decking they have (or don’t have) in their attic, though the number of layers might be more difficult to assess. If the home has cedar shake, then all-new plywood will be needed for an asphalt roof installation. If there is mold on the plywood or decking, then not only will new plywood be needed, but an overhaul of the attic’s ventilation system would be highly recommended. If the plywood on the home is very dark, this likely means it is very old, and more than likely won’t last as long as the new shingles. Keep an eye out for splits, cracks, and old knots if you have some variation of actual wood decking under your shingles. It’s good to familiarize yourself with your attic (though it may not be cozy!), as you’ll be able to better gauge if there is an issue with moisture of any kind, and it will prepare you for upcoming projects such as a new roof.

How to Prep for Painting: Surface Cleaning

I

f you ever had an interior paint estimate given to you by a painting contractor, you know that multiple estimates can vary a lot. Anyone can pick up a paint brush and roller and paint a room, but an inexperienced painter will miss steps along the way. Doing the proper prep work is the most important thing you can do to ensure a quality job. Here are some prep work steps that you should have done with every job.

• A paint scraper will help to remove any cracked or flaking paint that is still on the wall. For other small imperfections on the wall, smooth them away with sandpaper. Sanding can be done manually with extra pressure, or with an elec tric sander. Any imperfections in the wall will then become textures underneath the new paint job when you are done, which will be much harder to remove later.

Before any painting begins, the first step is to clear the surface.

Skipping this step will most likely cause the paint to crack and peel soon after painting. Fortunately, prepping the wall for painting is a straightforward process that anyone can do. Materials such as sawdust, pet hair, and dust can be wiped off with a cloth, whereas things like grease will need to be washed off.

When you begin working on the walls, make sure to follow these steps:

• Always spackle any imperfections on walls and ceilings before painting. A spackled wall will make for a clean, smooth surface with a coat of paint that will last.

• Dust and clean the walls so there is no debris left when you start painting. A cloth towel or duster will work well for this.

• If you are going to be painting a kitchen or bathroom, a combination of three teaspoons of laundry detergent and one gallon of water will help wash tougher stains off of the walls.

• And don’t forget to screw in any screw pops and hammer in any nail pops so you don’t paint over them and leave spots on the wall.

These tips are incredibly important to make sure that the surface is prepared for painting. Skipping a step will lead to imperfections and a shorter lifespan. When you receive an estimate, always make sure the prep work is detailed, and that your painting contractor understands the importance of prepping before painting. M

W

einstein Supply has been in the area for nearly 100 years, providing plumbing and heating equipment to plumbers and the do-it-yourselfers all over the Philadelphia suburbs. The Broomall location opened in 2008, and has since become an important part of the community for local plumbers and anyone trying to fix up their own bathrooms or kitchens.

The company originally started in 1922 as a hardware store in West Philadelphia, eventually transitioning to plumbing and heating distribution more specifically. They provide everything a plumber would need, from the smallest valves or pipes to entire faucets. They specialize in “rough plumbing,” the more intricate materials that are used behind the wall or under the sink that most people would not see.

John Hough became the branch manager of Weinstein Supply when the new location opened in 2008. Before that, John had been an inside salesperson for Weinstein since 1999. John’s responsibilities include managing the employees, including the sales team, the warehouse team, the delivery drivers and the showroom team. He also develops long-term strategies for moving the Broomall branch forward.

“My family has been here in Broomall for the past 21 years,” John explained. “So it was an exciting opportunity to open a location in Marple township and be able to give back and support local schools and organizations.”

The Broomall location opened in 2008, originally in the Lawrence Park Industrial Park, but moved to a much larger location across the street in 2018. This new location has allowed them to create a large showroom, which is a very exciting opportunity to showcase more products to the public. The showroom is roughly 50% retail, 50% bath and kitchen products for plumbers. It can be both business-to-business and retail, but a typical transaction could be selling to the plumber, who then does the installation.

Pete Kane joined Weinstein in May of 2013, immediately after he graduated from Penn State with a B.S. in Legal Studies and a minor in Business.

“I truly enjoy working with customers to create spaces in their homes that they can be proud of and show off to their guests, but also will function well for them and their families,” Pete raved.

Over the past six years, Pete has grown into a very major role in the company. With the opening of the new location and showroom, Pete has become the showroom manager.

“As the opportunity for a showroom was first discussed,” Pete stated, “I was immediately excited. It has been great to take us into a new territory and launch a new direction for us, in addition to our wholesale business.”

This has been a major positive change for the company. After spending 11 years in the community, Weinstein is making a significant investment in Marple with this new building. Not only will there be a public showroom to feature many great bathroom and kitchen products, but the inventory will roughly double in size from the previous location. Their time in Marple has been very successful so far, and Weinstein is eager to keep growing as a presence in the community.

Pete is originally from the area, growing up in Springfield and attending Cardinal O’Hara for high school. Since Pete started in 2013, the company has doubled in size. All employees have roots in the Marple Newtown area.

“Even after everything has been installed, you get our full support,” Pete stated. “We back all of our products, and can share our expertise down the road if needed. Just among the 13 of us, there are over 100 years of experience in the industry.”

“Being local, we are all eager to support each other and see this business succeed in Marple,” Pete raved. “It’s a great environment to work in.”

With that much experience from local experts, Weinstein is a valuable resource for any plumbing needs. Now that the company has expanded to include a showroom and a much larger inventory, Weinstein has put itself in a more public-facing position.

The showroom had its soft opening and has already received some positive responses.

The Grand Opening will be Monday October 7.

“We want to be a staple in the community,” Pete said. “When people are redoing a bathroom or kitchen, we want them to think of Weinstein because we will have what they need. And if they are looking for a trustworthy plumber, we have the best connections in the business and can hook you up.”

The employees are the key differentiator from a box store or an e-commerce competitor. The transaction ends abruptly at box stores and online stores; once a product has been purchased, there is no follow-up from the box stores, and there is no personal interaction at all from online stores. With a store the size of Weinstein, there is a relationship over time with experts in the field that have the ability to follow up. Especially with a relatively small company filled with local employees, the staff will be more attentive and committed.

“It’s going to be really fun,” Pete excitedly explained. “The event will be a barbecue during the day, with a big tent where we can meet people in the neighborhood.”

I

t was Memorial Day Weekend and most people would be headed down the shore, except for three local boys and their Cabrini University Men’s Lacrosse teammates. Marple Newtown High School alums Billy Morgan, Tyler Kostack, and Jake Huey would be headed to Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Philadelphia Eagles, where they would battle it out for the NCAA Division III National Championship title.

These three have come a long way since their Marple Lacrosse days. They all grew up playing through Marple’s Youth lacrosse programs, onto middle school teams, then the high school team and finally to Cabrini University. The number 6 team of Cabrini University would be taking on the number 7 team of Amherst College. Neither team had made it to the championship game before this season.

It was a hard-fought game and both teams played to the best of their abilities. Each of the Marple boys contributed to the game in big ways. Morgan (Midfield) scored three goals, Kostack

Growing up as Eagles fans it was an amazing opportunity for this team to be able to play and win on the same field the Eagles play on. Most of the members of the Cabrini Cavaliers are fairly local to the Philadelphia area so this game certainly had a hometown feel. Over five sections of the Linc were covered in blue where the Cabrini lacrosse members’ families, friends and alumni cheered on the Cavs to victory. The first quarter ended with the Cavs leading 3-2. The Mammoths came back in the second quarter with a 4-3 score. The Cavs were back on top ending the third quarter 5-4. The fourth and final quarter of the championship game ended with a 16-12 Cavalier victory and the celebrations have yet to end. These three local Marple boys have made memories that will last a lifetime! M

Q&A: Guiding Your Child’s Dental Health

T

he health of your children’s baby teeth is every bit as important as their future adult teeth. In fact, the good habits that they develop in early childhood will follow them through their transitional dentition, and into adulthood.

Knowing how best to guide our kids on this important journey can sometimes be difficult. Often, parents have many questions when it comes to their children’s dental needs, but here are a few of the most commonly asked.

When your child is 1-2 years of age, change to a soft bristle children’s brush, brushing in small gentle circles. You can add a light smear of low-fluoride toothpaste at around 18 months of age. Between age 2 and 4, a pea-sized portion is appropriate, and by age 5, a portion roughly equivalent to the size of a bean will do.

When can I let my child brush on their own?

There really is no set age for your child to have the skills to brush on their own. Since every child develops at a slightly different rate, it is a good idea to allow your child to brush for themselves as soon as they show a willingness to do so. Although this will be supervised brushing, it can be empowering for your youngster to perform this task themselves. As a rule of thumb, most children will require supervision or assistance until around age 6.

What if my child refuses to brush?

This is one of the toughest questions to answer, as it is different for every child. If war breaks out every day at brushing time, it is better to be creative than to be insistent. Use positive reinforcement to encourage brushing. Associate it with a fun activity like bath time or a bedtime story. If you can create a positive association between those activities and brushing, you will win the war.

When should I start brushing my child’s teeth?

You can begin cleaning your child’s teeth and gums as the first tooth emerges. This may be done with a wet washcloth or gauze, and should be done twice daily.

When should I take my child to the dentist?

Most children should have their first dental visit between the ages of 1 and 3 years of age. These initial visits tend to be more informative than therapeutic in nature. They will however help your child to become more familiar, and at ease with their dental professional, especially as they reach 3 to 4 years of age.

Since most children need little more than a polish at this age, these “fun visits” can set the stage for a lifetime of stress-free dental care. M

A New Look for a New Season

he summer season is coming to an end and we begin to think about back-to-school time, chilly nights, bonfires and comfy sweaters! What better way to start the new season with some new fall hair and a fresh start.

housed the McKenzie family. Not far away was a newer, occupied house. Knocking on their door brought an incredible result: The family living there knew nothing about the older buildings, but they did know that a Thomas McKenzie lived not far away!

That disclosure sent Sean to yet another door. Armed with facts, Sean engaged Deirdre, the only one home at the time, in a discussion about her family roots. Deirdre got interested enough to talk about Sean’s discovery later that day, when her dad and mom, Thomas and Bernadette McKenzie, got home. Over the next few days follow-up phone calls between Sean and Thomas led to an invitation to visit.

Bill and I will never forget that day! We met Thomas and Bernadette, their adult daughter Deirdre, and their two grandchildren. Sean’s facts proved that Thomas and I share the same great-grandfather. Thomas and Bernadette were as interested in us as we were in them. He knew of no family in “the States,” and I certainly knew nothing about my new-found Irish cousin and his family. We talked about the origin of our Scottish name, and shared family stories over coffee and scones. After two hours, we reluctantly parted.

McKenzie ancestral home in Bonniconlon, County Mayo

M

y husband Bill and I had been to Ireland before, but never to the village of Bonniconlon, home of my paternal grandparents. On our upcoming trip to Ireland, Bonniconlon would be our starting point. We planned on driving to County Mayo, finding the village, and then what? Wander? I hoped just getting there would be good enough. Then fate intervened.

Two months before our planned departure, Bill noticed an advertisement for www.MyIrishFamilyHeritage.com, an online service that traces your Irish heritage. We promptly submitted our inquiry, and soon, Irish genealogist extraordinaire Sean Quinn was engaged in a hunt for my dad’s Irish ancestors, the McKenzies.

There wasn’t much to go on, only two death certificates and an application for naturalization. Those documents revealed greatgrandparents’ names, possible dates of birth, and a departure city. But Sean somehow discovered the existence of Thomas McKenzie, my grandfather’s only brother who had remained in Ireland. Sean also learned my ancestor’s townland (a small division of land like our township system); the graveyard where McKenzies were buried; and the location of houses where the family lived as tenant farmers in the mid-to-late 1800’s.

Sean Quinn doesn’t just research from his desktop: His organization prides itself on their local reconnaissance. Once they discover historical facts, they travel, to personally verify the authenticity of their findings. Sean's in-depth investigation enabled him to tell me I have cousins still living in Bonniconlon.

Following an old map and census information, Sean discovered a cluster of four abandoned stone homes, one of which once

We now stay in touch through “the post” and emails. Bill and I are sharing with our children information contained in the bound book Sean presented to us on our parting. It’s filled with discoveries about our family and historical information about the time they lived in Ireland. I was able to create a generational chart that traces my connection with my cousin Thomas McKenzie.

We’ve discovered who our grandfathers’ brothers and sisters were, and we both better appreciate where and how they might have lived.

Bill and I have always loved Ireland for its beauty and its people.

Now, we have special names and faces to love!

Will Snite’s Stage Coach Written by Doug Humes

ecently, I came across the grave of William F. Snite at the Marple cemetery. And I asked him, “Haven’t we met?” His name is on an old stagecoach ticket in our archives. So I went looking for his story.

In 1880, Will was 19 years old, a laborer for James Dunwoody at his farm (at the Octagonal School) bordering West Chester Pike. The road ran past the farm and up to the stage coach stop at the Newtown Square Hotel, and then on to West Chester.

Will Snite would see that stage while at work in the farm field.

And he had an idea. Why couldn’t he run a daily stage coach from Newtown Square to Philadelphia and back? With two horses and a wagon, he could haul passengers and freight each way. It was an 11-mile trip, and he could offer daily service to and from the city, as we can see from the advertising flyer he printed in 1887, at age 27, as the proud proprietor of the Newtown & Philadelphia Stage Coach.

Leaving the Square at 7:15 each morning, Will made his first stop at Broomall 25 minutes later; then 35 minutes to Eagle Road, then 30 more to Upper Darby, and then delivered his passengers to the William Penn Hotel at 38th & Market in Philadelphia at 9:30 am. His return trip did not leave till 3:45 pm, so during the day he did short hauling - picking up packages at the various stores in the city to bring them back to the farm families who had ordered goods unavailable in the communities on his route. On a slow day he could catch up on all of the news and gossip along the way. It was a good life – easier than farm labor.

Nothing lasts forever. The railroad came to Newtown Square in 1893, and the West Chester trolley line came a few years later.

Will Snite and his two horses could not compete, and soon his stage coach was out of business. He returned to farming, left the area, and returned at death to Marple cemetery, where I found him.
