I was there, in my favorite chair, near the St. Anastasia Church sign, with only one care in mind: to encourage the Broomall Rotary’s 5K Firecracker Runners and Walkers before turning my cheers towards veterans, first responders, musicians, children and contenders for parade float honors. How to Choose the Best Home Ventilation System

I

ndoor air quality affects your health and safety. Opening a window isn’t always possible, so you need other methods to replace stale indoor air with fresh outdoor air.

Exhaust Fans Most homes have an exhaust fan in each bathroom and a range hood above the stove. These fans extract the moist air created when we take a hot shower or cook something hot and steamy.

To work well, the fans must be sized and installed correctly.

They also must be kept clean and well-maintained to ensure maximum performance. You will need to have a professional clean out the ductwork annually because a mucked-up duct reduces an exhaust fan’s performance.

Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRVs) Whenever you use a fan to extract air that has already been heated, you have to replace it. Typically outdoor air seeps in to make up the difference when you open the door. It’s not tremendously noticeable because the airflows are small, but it does affect your bill when you have to heat that outdoor air.

HRVs take your exhaust air and pass it through a core that transfers some of the heat to the incoming makeup air. This heats the incoming air so that your heating system has less work to do to warm it up to the indoor temperature, saving you energy.

Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs) While HRVs transfer heat to the incoming air in winter, ERVs transfer both heat and moisture, recovering more energy overall. So in the wintertime, your incoming air would be less dry as the moisture is transferred from the exhaust. In the summer, the incoming air would have some humidity removed by the conditioned exhaust air.

Considerations for HRVs and ERVs Because of the push towards energy savings (plus, who wouldn’t want to lower their utility bills, right?), ERVs and HRVs are becoming requirements for new buildings and most renovations in the US and Canada. So what else do you have to consider before taking the leap?

1. Which Air to Pass Through Your range hood will have to remain because you can’t pass grease-laden exhaust air through a heat recovery core. You can also choose to leave your existing bathroom exhaust fans and install an HRV or ERV to provide general ventilation throughout your home.

2. Space Requirement These units are larger than the typical ceiling-mounted exhaust fans, so they need a dedicated space available, with clearances for maintenance. You also need room to install insulated intake and exhaust ductwork.

Ask yourself: Do I take care of this vital system, or do I take better care of my car than my body? What do you do to ensure your continued ability to function, as well as your quality of life? When was the last time you brought this complex system in for a tune up? You shouldn’t wait until the engine light goes on (you’re experiencing pain) to see if you are in fact OK. Arthritis and degenerative changes slowly occur over time and are not reversible. To avoid this and to increase your ability to perform the activities that you love, here are a few things that you can do to maintain your quality of life.

1. Get up and MOVE! Whether it’s an organized exercise program or simply an increase to your activity level, be sure to stretch regularly. The more consistently you stretch, the more elongated and flexible your muscles and joint systems become. Stretching and simply moving more will also increase your energy.

2. Drink plenty of water, and decrease sugary and processed foods.

3. Keep a positive attitude and be grateful.

4. See a chiropractor (your body’s mechanic) before your warning lights go on and you break down. For Steve, that meant taking electrical code courses at Delaware County Community College and earning his electrical license in Philadelphia.

While Steve was working as an electrician, he installed numerous generators in homes over the years. Not only did he want

Broomall Is Where They Belong

eet the Kingsland Family: Megan, Steve and Cole.

Although technically they’re new to Broomall, having just purchased their home here last year, their roots in Marple go back much further. And with so many relatives and friends in the neighborhood, it feels like they’ve always belonged here.

Megan (Meg) grew up in Drexel Hill with her parents, twin sister and an older brother and sister. She attended Garrettford Elementary, Drexel Hill Middle School, then graduated from Upper Darby High School in 2008. During high school, Meg loved her Advanced Placement courses and was active in sports, including tennis and field hockey. She chose St. Joseph’s University to further her education and pursue a degree in marketing. While studying at St. Joe’s, Meg said she realized she was not really business-minded; it wasn't her passion. So, after two years there she transferred to Temple University where she shifted gears and earned a degree in Broadcast Journalism. As a Temple student, Meg interned at a local news station and volunteered as a writing and English tutor for public school students. She also earned extra money by working here in Marple Newtown at both the Winner's Circle restaurant and Newtown Square Pizza.

After college, Meg began her career in television news at WFMZ-TV in Allentown where she worked as a producer for six years. She’s now a TV producer for Fox 29 News Philadelphia where she produces the 11 o’clock news, overseeing the production process and making sure all operations run smoothly. “I love that my job is fast-paced, exciting and different every day,” she said. “I also love bringing attention to stories and people in our communities. to recently produce a story about Delco Steaks and one about Austin’s Army.”

Steve and his sister also grew up in Drexel Hill but attended Aronimink Elementary School. In 2005, Steve graduated high school from The Haverford School, where he was a soccer player and two-time state champion wrestler. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sports Science from Ursinus College, where he continued to wrestle. Steve said he’s always been passionate about exercising and it has always been a big part of his life. He’s worked as a trainer at the former Row Zone in Newtown Square, he’s been an assistant wrestling coach at Upper Darby High School and he also enjoys working out at LA Fitness.

For the past several years, Steve’s professional career has been focused on helping run his family’s seafood business. Since 1935, Bywood Seafood has been serving fresh seafood to the residents and many area restaurants in Delaware County with retail locations in Rosemont and Upper Darby. They provide delicious and fresh seafood to many local favorite restaurants like Anthony's in Drexel Hill, Quotations in Media, Stingers in Secane and Stephen’s on State in Media. “I love connecting with customers and local restaurants,” said Steve. “I feel a sense of pride that I get to help my family carry on a family business that has been around for 87 years.” Steve said he also is looking forward to expanding the seafood business, hopefully in the Marple area!

Although Meg and Steve both grew up in Drexel Hill, their paths didn’t cross until after high school. They met at a party in 2007 where a mutual friend introduced them. “I was drawn to Steve’s friendly and outgoing personality,” said Meg. They

exchanged numbers before going their separate ways after the party. The next day Steve texted Meg to ask for a date. “I was so surprised and happy!” she added.

The couple married in June of 2021 at United Methodist Church in Ardmore with a small and sweet ceremony that included close family and a few friends. Making the day extra special?

Steve and Meg learned just two days before the wedding that they were expecting their first child. Because of Steve’s busy work schedule around Memorial Day, the couple had an unconventional honeymoon and traveled to a beautiful resort in the Dominican Republic two weeks before the wedding.

2021 turned out to be quite an exciting year for Meg and Steve, as all in one year, they married, found out they were expecting and settled on their first home here in Broomall. The couple had previously lived in Wyomissing and Bethlehem to be close to Meg’s job at WFMZ-TV and Steve commuted back and forth to Delaware County. Right before the Covid-19 pandemic hit, Meg and Steve decided they’d like to move back to the Delaware County area to settle down and start a family.

The process didn’t go as quickly as the couple would have liked and they began to get discouraged. But in late 2020 Meg’s older sister sent her a listing and urged her to go see it. inspection, but he loved it!” Not only is the house perfect, but Kingslands said the neighborhood is very family-friendly and within walking distance to many stores and places to eat. And not only do they have Meg’s cousins across the street, but the whole block has also been welcoming and helpful since their baby was born this past winter.

Meg and Steve welcomed Cole Christopher in March 2022.

His parents say that he’s an easy-going baby and already showing so much personality. “He has a big smile and a cute laugh,” Meg said. Cole’s name has significance as his initials are “CC,” which happens to be Meg’s twin sister’s nickname. The name Cole came from a combination of her other sister’s name (Nicole) as well as some of their favorite Philadelphia sports players. Although he’s only three months old, Steve said he’s looking forward to the day he can get Cole involved in sports.

“We can’t wait for him to become a Marple Tiger,” he said.

Now that the Kingslands are settling into their home and adjusting to life as a family of three, they’re looking forward to a fun summer. In honor of being featured on the cover of our July issue, Meg said they wanted to let readers know they’re especially thankful for our military, including veterans like her grandfather. From the Fourth of July parade to time in Wildwood Crest where Steve’s parents own a home, and get-togethers at Meg’s parents’ home, their summer will be packed with family fun. “Now we just need to get Steve’s sister to move to Broomall!” said Meg. “We’re here for the long haul!”

History Spotlight

Marple Newtown High School Yearbooks Saved!

B

y virtue of being involved in the local historical societies, I get emails from various history groups on matters of interest to local history groups. In 2016 or so, I received one such piece of “junk mail.” This “junk” perfectly illustrates the saying that one man’s junk is another man’s jewelry. The mailing was from the Pennsylvania State Museum Commission. The Pennsylvania State Library owns a book scanner — a high tech machine that will hold a book in place so you can get a clean scan of the page.

If you are familiar with Google Books, it is likely the same type of machine they have been using for years when they go into a library and scan every book that is no longer protected by copyright, to make them searchable and available to the entire world through their Google Books site. The email I received let me know that the scanner would be made available to community groups who may want to use it for a particular project.

I had just the project in mind. Through working with one of the Marple Newtown High School (MNHS) history teachers on the project to create the 100 year timelines that now grace the halls of the high school, I knew that they had a virtually complete set of the MNHS yearbooks, going back to about 1927. I had heard about another local high school years before, where the school threw out the old yearbooks because they did not have the space to continue to store them. Such madness. Not everyone values their history. I reached out to the MNHS teacher, Mike Karpyn, and told him about the scanner. Mike cares about history, and he happened to have a cheap source of labor at his disposal — his students! He jumped on the opportunity, and by January of 2017, he and his students were working on the project.

You can see the results, because all of the yearbooks and some other materials are posted at https://archive.org/details/marplenewtownhighschool. It is a pretty easy site to navigate, and it opens up the history of all of those books to anyone curious about the stories that they tell. Once scanned, these materials will hopefully live forever, and will continue to tell their stories to future generations.

Shana completed 9th grade at the top of her class academically in June, and can’t wait till September when she’ll be a 10th grader taking part in her favorite subjects – Spanish and Biology. It would be a true understatement to say Shana merely likes the sciences. “I love science!” said Shana.

A unique program at ACHS is the Morning TV Crew, which just happens to be Shana’s favorite part of each day.

Each member of the team has a specific job, and Shana handles the graphics, which involves choosing and executing the graphics to be used during the broadcast. “I enjoy doing graphics since I get to manage the transitions and backgrounds between the different sections of the show,” said Shana. She also enjoys discussing with her fellow team members what music is to be played during the credits and which daily announcements are to be made. The broadcast is live-streamed on YouTube and emailed to the students, and continues to be a treasured part of the high school’s outreach to students.

Shana also takes part in her school’s Community Service Corps (CSC), which handles an area Thanksgiving canned food drive each year, along with wrapping presents at holiday time for sick children at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).

If you were to ask the teachers and faculty of ACHS what they think of most when they think of Shana, the answer would often be how polite she is to everyone. She walks down the halls with a smile, greeting her fellow students, teachers and everyone she comes across. She is known to be one of the most respectful, kindest and friendliest students at the school.

It’s Prime Grilling Time

J

uly is considered the midpoint of summer, and it’s also National Grilling Month! Now is the time to get your grilling game to the point of mastery that you desire. Gas grills were introduced in the US in 1966, and although the original gas grills were smaller than today’s, the idea and ease of use caught on quickly. Recent developments in manufacturing provide an even more uniform temperature output across the cooking grid. To demonstrate a grill’s ability to heat evenly, manufacturers and sales associates place five slices of bread on premium gas grills (at the center and corners), and after 30 seconds, they remove the slices to reveal perfectly uniform toast — no hot spots or uneven toasting.

At first, gas grills were sold exclusively through natural gas utilities. Propane models were added and quickly became widely available for home use. Today, some models offer multi-level cooking grids, separate burner controls, stainless steel griddles and even smoker abilities, which doubles their versatility by allowing backyard chefs to slow-roast and smoke meat, veggies and poultry.

5 Useful Grilling Tips • Wash your hands, utensils and surfaces often.

Food safety is paramount when grilling! After handling raw meat, wash your hands thoroughly to help prevent the spread of germs. Wash utensils and surfaces after each use.

• Keep the food cold.

Letting food sit out for an extended length of time allows bacteria to grow, which can make people sick. Keep food cold until it is ready to be cooked. Put salads and fruit trays on ice.

• Always preheat the grill.

A preheated grill helps prevent food from sticking to the grates and helps food cook more evenly.

• Monitor your grill.

Make sure you know the proper grilling times and temperatures before you start. Use a timer to avoid over- or under-cooking your food. Food should be cooked to at least 140 degrees Fahrenheit before consuming.

• Keep your grill clean.

Keeping your grill clean extends its life and also helps your food taste even better. Grease or food that’s stuck on the grill grate should be wiped or scraped off immediately after cooking.

Sump Pump Replacement

W

hen you need to replace your sump pump, you should check the valve to make sure the discharge pipe to the outside is clear. A blockage can cause the float on the pump to not work or work improperly. Debris can also easily clog the impeller, the part of a pump or compressor that rotates at a high speed and acts as a propeller to increase a fluid's pressure and flow rate. Impellers can be made from various metals such as steel, iron or bronze, as well as plastics. Make sure the discharge piping from the pump has a check valve, to prevent water from coming right back in once it’s pumped out.

A new mulch bed or landscaping is often the cause of why the discharge pipe no longer drains freely. This can become a complicated situation if the pump kicks on. Check the power outlet regularly because many basement outlets have ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) that can easily trip, causing no power to the pump.

If you have a home that heavily relies on the sump pump during storms, then a backup pump system is strongly recommended.

Backup sump pumps are usually battery operated, using a

12-volt marine battery that comes with a wall charger to keep the battery charged and ready to go. This allows them to kick into action even when a power outage has rendered your sump pump useless. Homeowners can expect to get anywhere from 5 – 8 hours of run time on these batteries.

Not only do backup pumps protect your home from damage in the event of pump failure, but they can also assist in times of severe flooding, when your primary pump may become overwhelmed by the water volume during serious storms.

Water-powered backup systems are gaining in popularity, and are powered by the local municipal water supply.

Such water-powered backup systems require no electricity to operate, and will function for a much longer time than the battery backup systems. A water-powered backup system will not work, however, if you have a well water system.

When selecting fruit to grill, keep in mind that the firmer the fruit, the better it will hold its shape. For moister fruits like strawberries, use a skewer, and cut oranges, lemons and limes into larger pieces so they don’t shrivel up. Try dusting your citrus with sugar before grilling, and serve the slices as a garnish for your summer cocktails.

Instead of burgers and hot dogs this summer, why not literally raise the steaks and grill some filets? When it comes to quality cuts of meat, your local butcher is the place to start. Popular picks for tender, juicy steaks are ribeye, New York strip steak and filet mignon.

“Salmon is a little tricky because it’s much more fragile than tuna,” Chris warned.

“Make sure you oil up your grill first so your filets don’t stick.” He explained that he also cooks salmon on a 500° grill, but for one minute longer on each side. Chris said that he loves to serve salmon in the summer with seasonal fruit salsas such as watermelon salsa and pineapple salsa.

But what if you’re looking for a lighter alternative? Grill some fish like tuna and salmon. For advice on serving up tender, flaky fish, we turned to Chris Posse, Head Chef over at Casey’s Public House.

“I like to marinate tuna filets in a little bit of olive oil and vinegar,” said Chris.

“Then I’ll heat up the grill to 500° and cook them for three to four minutes on each side and serve them medium-rare.”

In the summer, Chris likes to slice the filets and serve them on top of a healthy green salad.

• Mushrooms are the new burger. A huge Portobello makes a delicious meat substitute, perfect for the vegetarians in the family. Season each Portobello slice well, and sprinkle some shredded mozzarella cheese on top during the last few minutes of grilling.

• Trade your potato salad for some grilled veggies. The best vegetables for grilling are zucchini, peppers of any variety, corn, asparagus, artichokes and tomatoes.

• Pizza night can be healthy and fun on the grill, too. Oil the grill so the dough doesn't stick. Prepare homemade pizza dough or thaw a premade ball or disc of pizza dough. Roll the dough into a circle as thick or thin as you’d like. Flour both sides lightly so they’re not too sticky.

Place the circular dough on a 500° grill and close the lid. Grill for 3–4 minutes or until slightly brown on the bottom. Flip the dough onto a cookie sheet and add ingredients (sauce, cheese, toppings), then return it to the grill. Lower the temperature to 350°, close the lid and grill the pizza for another 2–3 minutes. For a healthier twist, try a whole wheat crust brushed with olive oil.

Why Your Check Engine Light Comes On

T

he check engine light is a signal from your car’s engine computer that something is wrong with the engine emissions system. Generally, when it's on, your fuel economy and engine performance may be at risk. Unfortunately, the light is not specifically helpful because a typical internal combustion engine has around 200 parts!

To diagnose exactly what may be wrong, you would need to use an Onboard Diagnostics-II (OBD) reader (aka scanner) to get the specific diagnostic code, and then research the code’s meaning. However, you should think of a diagnostic code like a ZIP code and the issue like a specific house in that ZIP code.

Your mechanic will be able to pinpoint the exact issue (house) and complete the necessary repair(s).

When the check engine light comes on, you don’t need to freak out, but it is important to promptly address it. Ignoring it could lead to larger, costlier problems later. However, if it’s flashing instead of being on steadily or continuously, your issue is a bit more urgent!

While your check engine light may come on for various reasons, here are the five most common reasons why that light comes on in our area of the country.

1. Oxygen Sensors (O2S) When your O2S needs to be replaced, your car will either run rich (less oxygen, more fuel) or lean (more oxygen, less fuel), both of which are bad for your car and the environment. If this oxygen/fuel mix is faulty during an emissions inspection, you’ll more than likely not pass.

2. Catalytic Converters Over time, a vehicle’s catalytic converter can become clogged, which restricts exhaust gasses from passing through properly. Some symptoms include reduced acceleration, dark exhaust smoke and the smell of rotten eggs coming from the exhaust.

3. Loose Fuel Cap If your check engine light turns on immediately after a fill-up, pull over and make sure the fuel cap isn’t loose. Yes, it can be that simple! Over time, the cap will wear down and may need replacement.

4. Ignition Coils and Spark Plugs As your vehicle ages, these parts may corrode or simply wear down and not perform their best. Worn or faulty ignition coils and spark plugs can cause issues like engine misfire, hesitation under heavy acceleration or even making the engine shut off unexpectedly.

5. Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Your check engine light may be on because no accurate signal is coming from the MAF sensor. Without it, your car won’t know how much fuel to give the engine. This could cause the engine to run rich or lean and ultimately cause the engine to run rough and misfire. A bad MAF may also reduce your vehicle’s acceleration and lead to an increase in fuel consumption. M

A

fter a successful return of the Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade in 2021, the 2022 sequel did not disappoint! The streets were packed with people and the excitement in the air was electric.

Spectators were entertained by marching bands such as Mersey-British Rock Invasion and the Slim Jim & Big Guy Band. Our local marching bands, fire companies and first responders joined in the fun. Local businesses, community clubs and neighborhood residents did not disappoint with their decorated floats, marching groups and costumed individuals. But it was the little ones who stole the show with their creative and festively decorated strollers, wagons, hand-drawn floats and bikes.

The parade ended with a celebration of our great country.

Volunteers were on hand to serve pretzels, hot dogs and water. The crowd gathered to listen to The Marple Newtown Community Band play our National Anthem, after which the awards ceremony began. Medals and trophies were given to the top three entries in each division, and their names and photos will be featured in the 2023 parade commemorative book.

When the 2020 parade was canceled due to the pandemic, the committee launched a Red, White and YOU! decorating contest for area residents and businesses. Ronica Cleary: Making the Most of Opportunities

T

here is an old expression that luck is when preparation meets opportunity. For Ronica Cleary, founder and CEO of Cleary Strategies, LLC, hard work, preparation and perhaps a bit of luck led her to where she is today. After a successful career in television journalism, she’s using her own professional experiences to help corporations thrive in today’s media climate.

Ronica grew up in New Jersey and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering. With a job offer in technical consulting, she wasn’t looking to pursue a master’s degree, but a scholarship award as a result of winning Miss Philadelphia and the opportunity to attend Drexel University was an offer she couldn’t pass up. Always interested in television and journalism, Ronica thought she’d try it out and figured she could always return to the engineering field later. She earned a Master of Science in Public Communication and from there, her professional life began to take a different direction.

While studying at Drexel, she got a taste of working in the field of television. She was a cooperative-education (co-op) student at a CBS television affiliate as well as at Comcast Newsmakers.

Although she loved Drexel’s co-op program, she was unsure if television was the right field for her and began a position at Monster.com in their Make it Count program. Early in her professional career she also worked as an adjunct professor of communication at Drexel and as an Associate Director of Development for the university.

Ronica was settling into her career in a traditional day job, but a chance meeting with a former mentor creating a new television show called Chasing New Jersey led her on a new path. “When he asked me if I was interested in getting into television and being part of the show, I didn’t think anything would come of it,” explained Ronica. But Ronica was hired for the show (changed to Chasing News) and it aired in New York, Philadelphia and New Jersey on their Fox stations. “It was an incredible place to start a career in TV, especially since the program aired in the number one and number four markets,” she added.

Ronica’s job at Chasing News eventually led to covering New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who was planning on running in the 2016 Presidential election. Covering Christie day and night as he traveled around the United States fostered Ronica’s love for political reporting and led to yet another opportunity.

This time it was a job offer to work in Washington D.C. as the Fox affiliate’s political correspondent. Ronica made the move to D.C. to begin covering the 2016 election. “It was a remarkable time in American history and a remarkable time to cover the

White House briefing room,” Ronica said proudly. “Before this, most press briefings were only shown on C-SPAN. Now people actually knew the reporters by name.”

According to Ronica, getting the job was a little bit of luck and good timing. “It was fortuitous because normally, a lot of local stations wouldn’t even have a white house correspondent,” she explained. “It was such a unique time in the country, which made the job even more special and meaningful.”

During her time as a reporter in D.C., Ronica also became pregnant with her second child. Eventually, balancing life in television and motherhood became very demanding. “I loved my time in the industry and made great friends there,” said Ronica. “But as our family grew, I was looking to find more of a balance.”

By founding Cleary Strategies, LLC in 2018, Ronica was able to take her experiences in front of the camera and on campaign trails to help her clients find their own stories and deliver them to the world. Ronica’s core team includes four women who specialize in an area of Public Relations (PR), along with a few others who work in editing, ghostingwrititg and more. “As a full-service PR agency, we make it possible for our clients to successfully share their message and preserve their image.”

A key part of what Cleary Strategies does is help businesses earn media placements and exposure. Their clients have been featured on such programs as Good Morning America, CNN, Fox Business and ABC News, to name a few. “When I first transitioned to being a publicist, I didn’t know what it would feel like to put other people in front of the camera,” said Ronica.

“Then I realized that it was what I was meant to be doing. I fell in love with pitching, booking and placing people with meaningful stories or expertise on the news.”

What perhaps is the most meaningful in Ronica’s work is her #ClearyCares division. “We launched #ClearyCares to provide pro bono PR support to those with limited resources but important causes that deserve media attention,” she said. Some past and present #ClearyCares clients include Ukrainian voices, Zachary Root & his Usher 1F Syndrome Cereal Challenge, Grands Stepping Up and the Miss Philadelphia organization.

All For a Dry Basement

A

case review of a recent project revealed numerous DIY steps that a home’s owners had taken to correct a chronically wet laundry room window and stone foundation wall, all without any success. Upon site inspection and inquiry of past home improvements, little was found to identify the root cause of the chronic leaks. Even the replacement concrete and driveway contractors had failed to find the answer to this mystery. Those contractors chose to complete major rehab steps instead of looking at the long-overdue wood-framed leaky basement window. The focus needed to be on property maintenance such as gutters and grading.

The window itself was inoperable due to multiple attempts to caulk the inside perimeter of the window frame, and the homeowners could not even reach the window to vent it, due to the washer and laundry tub. Visually it looked terrible and was of absolutely no effect against storms. Even the custom-made Plexiglass window-well cover and the galvanized higher window-well liner, which were recently installed, did not improve the situation in the least. The homeowners were so desperate that they started using a sandbag diverter, which was temporarily working far better than any of the extensive exterior renovations.

The new concrete patio had obviously been installed too low.

And the recently redone driveway had not been properly sloped away from the house. Unfortunately, correcting those two engineering mistakes would mean starting all over, and that was simply not an option financially or timewise.

After the homeowners had endured many expensive but unsuccessful attempted solutions and the resulting sleepless nights, the actual solution was to go after the weakest link of the total project, and not the flaws in previous well-intended steps to “beat the water.” In the end, the solution was to replace the Plexiglass window-well cover, with no change to the two new extended galvanized liners, and install a solid glass-block window with waterproofing cement on three sides. The homeowners also keep handy a few sandbag diverters to use when huge rains are expected.

No re-do or backhoe excavation was needed, much to the homeowners’ relief.

COVID and The Court System

OVID has been a challenge to all of us on many different levels, and the court system is no exception.

Everyone had to suddenly change the way they’d been conducting business for decades. After being closed in 2020 by a Proclamation from Pennsylvania’s governor in response to the spread of COVID, everyone had to quickly figure out how to adapt to working remotely. This was a monumental task for law firms and courts.

IT experts had to be consulted, and equipment and software identified, purchased, installed and implemented while cases and clients were placed in a holding flight pattern. During that time, crime, domestic violence, emergency situations, etc., did not cease to occur. The County courts and law firms were placed in a very difficult situation: having to figure out how to continue to take care of their clients' needs and the community’s needs when the courts were closed.

For months, the courts could only handle emergency matters.

Delaware County attorneys were bringing emergency motions to the front of the County Courthouse, and leaving them in bins for court personnel to pick up and file. From there, they were brought to a Judge, who would then contact council or unrepresented parties to handle the motion. Can you imagine how hard it was for police departments and District Attorneys’ offices to manage the processing of arrests and domestic violence calls during all of this? The great news is that for the most part, people rose to the occasion and adapted. The courts slowly but surely re-opened.

COVID was a problem in custody cases as well. Separated parents didn’t know what to expect with custody arrangements when a child or someone in the household contracted COVID. The good news is that most separated parents handled the issues in a reasonable manner because it was psychologically better for the children and in their own best interests. The unfortunate side of the issue is that contentious parents used COVID as an excuse to alienate the other parent.

The courts couldn’t and didn’t stand for this, even with all the difficulties they faced from the closings and restrictions. This meant that the parent who had the child when COVID was contracted had to quarantine the child until a doctor advised July 2022
