In the coming months of 2022, you’ll see a new Sports Section launched in your hometown magazine, with monthly sports features of all types related to sports activities, teams, players and sports memories from years past. We also will be uploading many local sports features to our new web portal, BVM Sports (see www.BVMSports.com). To do that, we need Reader Leaders with an interest in sports — pee wee to pros. As the saying goes, “Read All About It” on page 26, and learn how you can get involved to help. What else is coming in 2022? In this new year, you can expect to see your hometown magazine grow in page count, thanks to you, our readers, and thanks to our Reader Leaders who recommend new ideas for features about our friends and neighbors in Marple, and also by recommending new advertising Sponsors. What will we do with those added pages, besides adding a new Sports Section? Some Reader Leaders have suggested that we add new regular monthly features to profile more local residents: perhaps a monthly Marple Senior Profile or cute photos of new Broomall Babies. Or maybe a Pet Corner, to show off our furry friends. This year, look for new content features with new Content Sponsors, local businesses whose ads would anchor at the same local content feature each month, similar to how Toscana Modern Italian Steakhouse (opening soon in Newtown Square) is Marple Friends & Neighbors’ new Student of the Month Sponsor. Happy New Year, Everyone! And we hope you enjoy this first issue of 2022.

How a Home’s History Caused Its Basement Water and Humidity Problems

M

any area homeowners have basement, waterproofing and humidity-related problems even though they may already have a functioning sump pump with a French drain. The sump pumps were working hard during this past September's rude entry into fall, with some local areas getting 5–8 inches of rain in a 12-hour period. There was no way the sump pumps could keep up with that much rain! What separated the dry homes from the wet homes was simply preparation. Regular property maintenance, fall rakeouts, spring lawn cutting, and of course roof and gutter guard sweeping all play a key role in that preparation.

overhang at the roof eaves. Every heavy rain resulted in water overflowing down the walls and causing ongoing damage to the basement’s original stone walls.

One local homeowner had been experiencing water and humidity build-up in his basement even though he had it waterproofed just nine years ago. His basement issues had continued despite having a dehumidifier, water-tight windows and a backup sump pump. Upon closer inspection, it appeared that the screen vent had never been opened, which would have helped significantly to reduce and control humidity in the basement.

Home weatherization and waterproofing companies are among the very few contractors who encourage homeowners to do some DIY. Reputable contractors will often suggest that the homeowner make a few minor fixes on their own, such as correcting the exterior perimeter grading. In this way, the contractor can help the homeowner save some money. If the fix is beyond what the homeowner can do on their own, that’s where weatherization and waterproofing experts come in to work their magic.

Another cause of this homeowner’s basement moisture problems was that this 1940s depression-era home was built by a local mason who had coated the foundation walls with a homemade parging (similar to stucco) that was a mixture of clay, mud, sand and lime. Now, some 80 years later, that mixture was disintegrating into dust. A third defect was the rather “thrifty” roof design: short roof joists that created zero

Proper correction of water problems is essential in order to have a safe and healthy home and basement. It begins with a thorough inspection and taking a complete history of the home and its maintenance. This way, the contractor or homeowner will know exactly what direction to take. Remember, it’s important to make significant upgrades and fixes before the storms arrive! M

Frequently Asked Questions About Winter Tires

W

hat are winter tires? Winter or snow tires are a type of specialty tire that are designed to give your vehicle the best possible traction (grip of the road) in cold weather, below 45°. They are made with a tread compound that remains more flexible at these colder temperatures, and are designed with deeper grooves and sharper, more irregular edges, to do a better job in snow, slush, ice, and cold wet roads.

Compared to all-season tires, winter tires can provide 25 – 50% more traction! How can you tell it’s time for winter tires? Once the weather starts consistently dipping below 45°, it’s time. Within the Marple-Newtown area, most people install as early as late-October and then reinstall their all-seasons by late-March. M

Why do people switch from all-season to winter tires? Drivers switch to winter tires to be better prepared for whatever weather the winter brings. Drivers consider the forecasted weather for the season and what kind of driving they’ll be doing (e.g., rural vs city). Much of their decision to switch is rooted in their personal risk tolerance and budget. To assess cost, some drivers compare the cost of winter tires with the cost of their insurance deductible. If they get into an accident that could have been avoided with winter tires, then the extra cost would have been justified. They may also consider the total lifetime cost of one set versus two. Not only would owning a second set lengthen the life of their all-season tires by displacing miles, but they avoid prematurely wearing them down from using them in conditions they weren’t designed for. What does it cost to have winter tires installed? Depending on the tire, you could spend a couple hundred dollars or more. A Money-Saving Tip Some drivers invest in both tires and wheels! Of course, this is more of an upfront cost, but on a recurring basis (over the 5 – 10 years you have the tires), it’s an inexpensive alternative to mounting and unmounting winter tires every season. Are winter tires worth it on All-Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicles? In normal driving conditions, AWD vehicles send 80–100% of the vehicle’s power to either the front or rear axle. But in slippery conditions, the system will automatically direct power to the wheels with the best traction — keyword: traction! January 2022

Is There a National Day for Bringing People Together?

M

artin Luther King Day is ahead on January 17th. Next month, we’ll celebrate Valentine’s Day. Some days are holidays celebrated by many; some even by an Act of Congress. Other days carry traditional awareness, curiously honored, like Groundhog Day. But what about all those other awareness days we learn about in news and entertainment media? They’re promoted as being on a national calendar but are far from our awareness until we’re reminded to observe some special day to hope for some cure or practice for better health or to honor relationships, places or good food. Some announced national days aim our mindfulness toward serious matters, while other national days declared with the same authority appear to intentionally ignite a joyful chuckle over the inanity of such intended observance even for one day. There seems to be a National “Whatever” Day for everything. In just the first week of January 2022 alone comes National… Drinking Straw Day, Spaghetti Day, Trivia Day, Whipped Cream Day, Cuddle Up Day and Bobblehead Day. And that’s just half of the declared National Days for just the first week of the first month of 2022. How can this be?!? Everyone has heard that they can name a star after someone, or that buying land on the moon is possible. Really? It’s also possible to buy recognition for national mindfulness, by nominating a National Day of Awareness on the National Day Calendar. Not by contacting a federal agency, but by contacting just a website co-founded by Marlo Anderson in 2013. Since then, that website (www.NationalDayCalendar.com) has registered more than 2,000 National Days, National Weeks and National Months

by registration (and fee paid) by companies and organizations seeking to market the National Day they originated. What about a National Bringing People Together Day? Why not a Bringing People Together Month? No need. Because every day of every month, Marple Friends & Neighbors is Bringing People Together through our unique brand of social-media-inprint, through our magazine delivered monthly into Marple Township homes, and online at www.MarpleMag.com. There may be no declared National Bringing People Together Day by some fee paid to land it on the National Day Calendar. There’s no need. The fees are paid every month by our business Sponsors, who show us just how much Bringing People Together is important to them, and how important Broomall residents are to the success of their business. Each one of our advertising Sponsors has chosen to use a portion of their limited marketing budget to serve us in Bringing People Together in Marple Township by making our free hometown magazine possible. In this new year, whenever you read or hear about some National “Whatever” Day, let your first thought be that every day for Marple Friends & Neighbors is a Bringing People Together Day because of the contribution to our community made by the businesses seen advertising on the pages of your hometown magazine. Whenever possible, with strong intention, choose to do business with them first, to honor their service to our community. It’s the kind of service you’ll never see coming from e-commerce websites and big-box stores. M

Resident Feature

The Dailey Family Living Their Best Life in Broomall Written by Holly Stupak

W

e are excited to introduce you to our first Resident Feature of 2022: Kyle and Melissa Dailey and their three children. The Dailey family has a sign that hangs above their mantel that says, “Some Call it Chaos, We Call it Family!” With three children ages three and younger, a 6-year-old dog and a 12-year-old cat, Kyle said that the phrase certainly rings true. And they wouldn’t have it any other way! Kyle grew up in Lansdowne, but came to Broomall often as a kid to visit his grandmother who lived on Garden Rd. He attended Saint Philomena’s grade school and then Monsignor Bonner for high school where he played lacrosse. His junior year he entered the Culinary Arts Vo-Tech program at the Delaware County Technical School in Folcroft and he’s been a chef ever since. Although initially Kyle was interested in the automotive program, he said that his job at a local supermarket, specifically the bakery department, sparked his interest in food service. “The funny thing is, I was a picky eater as a kid,” explained Kyle. “My friends and family like to joke that the pickiest eater became a chef!” After high school, Kyle was awarded a partial scholarship to the prestigious Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. He graduated in May 2007 and started his career working in country clubs. Most recently he worked in corporate dining where he served as head chef for JP Morgan Chase in Delaware. “The best part of being a chef is making people smile with a meal you’ve created,” said Kyle. He also loves the fast pace of the food industry. “Getting through a dinner rush on a Saturday night is the most organized chaos I’ve ever been a part of,” he said. “Lots of screaming and yelling, but when it’s going well, it’s a feeling that can’t be explained.” This past year Kyle was able to start a new venture and what he says is his true passion: a mobile catering business called Twisted Elegance. “When Covid first hit, the food industry was one of the hardest impacted,” said Kyle. “Being a chef for 20 years, I knew then it was time to start working for myself. I also wanted to bring restaurant-quality food to people’s homes.” Kyle designed the brand new truck himself and has been able to cater many events including some locally for the Marple Soccer Association and Marple Newtown elementary school fundraisers. This winter, you’ll be able to catch him at Flight on Ice, the pop-up ice rink in Newtown Square. Melissa is also a Delaware County native. She grew up in Clifton Heights and graduated from Upper Darby High School. After high school, she went on to West Chester University to pursue a degree in elementary education and to fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher. Eventually, she completed her Master’s Degree in Reading from Wilkes University. She got a position as a teacher at Stonehurst Elementary in Upper Darby right out of Kyle and Melissa Dailey Photo by Breana Tiffany Photography

college and she’s been there ever since. For the first seven years she taught first grade before becoming a reading specialist. “I love working with young students to set the foundation they need to be lifelong readers and learners,” said Melissa. “There is nothing better than working with a student and seeing that ‘a-ha’ moment.” Melissa said she would love to someday work in the Marple Newtown School District so that she could serve the students in the same community where she lives (are you reading this Dr. Kane?). Kyle and Melissa met each other at JD McGillicuddy’s, a popular Upper Darby bar. Melissa said she didn’t go out that much, but had gotten a new pair of red shoes and figured, why not? She wasn’t there long when she noticed Kyle across the room. Her friend from work happened to know him from high school and was able to introduce the two of them. From there, they began dating and eventually celebrated their nuptials with fireworks on July 4, 2015.

When they were first married, the couple lived in a row home in Westbrook Park, but soon they realized they needed more space for their growing family. Both Kyle and Melissa wanted to raise their children in a good school district with lots of family-oriented activities and a strong sense of community. Broomall fit the bill and they also love its close proximity to the King of Prussia area and the city. When they first moved here, they found a great place on Ann Rd. “We loved the house and considered our Ann Road neighbors like family,” said Melissa. They are like grandparents to Brooklyn.” continued on page 12

Resident Feature This past February, they moved over to the New Ardmore section of Broomall for a bigger place for their three kids and pets. “Our new neighbors here have been so nice and welcoming,” added Melissa. “They immediately took to our kids and our barking dog!” Kyle and Melissa have three children: three-year-old Brooklyn, Leo, who’s 18 months, and the baby, Landon who is five months old. Brooklyn attends pre-school at Newtown Square Presbyterian where she’s known as a talkative, outgoing, social butterfly. She also attends From the Top Dance Studio and loves to dance all the time. Recently, she figured out how to use the family’s ALEXA and likes to dance to “I Like to Move It” as early as 6am. Leo may be a future basketball star, as his favorite toy is his Fisher-Price Hoops. Melissa said he’s a bruiser, but also quite the mama’s boy. Baby Landon was born in July 2021 and his parents say he’s always smiling. His two favorite things? Milk and sleep! The family also has two pets, a dog named ‘Nova and a cat named Eunice. A huge Philadelphia sports fan, Kyle brought home the German Shepherd/PitBull mix puppy on the day that Villanova won the Final Four in 2016. “I was feeling pretty confident earlier in the day about the team’s chances,” said Kyle. Sounds like ‘Nova certainly brought good luck to the team. Melissa brought Eunice home from her elementary school during a snowstorm, which Kyle was skeptical of at first. But, eleven years later, she’s really grown on him. During the summers, the Daileys love heading to Wildwood, where Melissa vacationed as a child. “Kyle spent a lot of time in Sea Isle and Ocean City when he was younger,” said Melissa. “So, I’m open to exploring other Jersey shore towns in the future.” The family also enjoys going to the Splash Club, where Melilssa said she can be found at the baby pool with a good book. As the Daileys are coming up on the one-year anniversary of being in their new home in Broomall, they’ve realized no matter what street you live on, it’s the perfect place to raise a family.

Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” MLK’s birthday, observed on January 17th this year, is a day dedicated to service, when Americans are encouraged to heed Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s words. It's the only federal holiday that is designated as a day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer. On this day we are called to step up to make our community more equitable and to build a community of Dr. King’s dreams. Whether it’s cleaning up a public space, mentoring someone, or helping the hungry or those in need, you can make a difference. So how can we as Marple residents honor the legacy of Dr. King? There are plenty of opportunities right here in our neighborhood as well as in Delaware County and the Philadelphia area.

Where Music ement Inspires Mov

Christine and Pat and the ir son Nico Photo by Kylene Cleaver

Paola and Frank Fusaro

hile some people spend years planning their dream wedding, Christine DeFilippis spent years planning her dream fitness studio. She taught her first fitness class at age 16 and has spent decades in the fitness industry. In 2018 her dream came true when she and her husband Pat opened Pop Fit Studio in Havertown. Since then, she’s been on a mission to inspire joyful movement and make her clients not only feel good about their workouts, but feel good about themselves and their bodies. Located in Havertown above Applebee’s restaurant on West Chester Pike, Pop Fit Studio offers a variety of fun and inclusive fitness classes. The 6,000 square-foot facility includes two large studios, a dedicated barre and TRX (total body resistance exercise) studio as well as a large studio where they offer cardio dance, trampoline, strength training, boxing and an exclusive BungeeWorkout TM. Aside from in-studio classes, Pop Fit Studio also offers live-streamed classes and an on-demand website with recorded workouts. What sets Pop Fit Studio apart from other gyms is their fun approach and shame-free atmosphere. Christine and her staff have created a variety of classes that incorporate fun and motivating music. “Music is the driving force in our classes,” said Christine. “When you find something you love you don’t think of it as a chore or obligation. You get up every day excited to make it a part of your day, and your life.”

The fitness programs at Pop Fit Studio are unique because they are Health At Every Size (HAES) aligned. They specialize in helping people make peace with food, enjoy exercise and reclaim the energy and time they lost due to diet and weight cycling. Christine said that she herself struggled with eating disorders and body dysmorphia over the years while she was trying to maintain the look of a fitness instructor. “I was told that I didn’t have the right body,” she said. “There is a lot of toxic diet culture that bombards us with messaging that we need to be smaller and thinner to be healthy and it’s just not true.” As a HAES-aligned fitness professional, Christine now aims to make fitness more inclusive and help others to practice body neutrality. She wants clients to know that health and fitness doesn’t have a look, and she wants to change the industry from a weight-centered industry to a behavior-focused one and help other fitness professionals take a weight-neutral approach. “I knew I wasn’t alone and that many people struggled with this messaging. That’s why I was inspired to disrupt the fitness industry,” she explained. Christine’s career in fitness began back when she was a student at Upper Darby High School. At age 16 she began working at a local gym and taught aerobics. After high school, she went on to Temple University where she studied Journalism, continued to teach aerobics and was a member of Temple’s dance team. For many years Christine continued to teach fitness classes but considered it more of a hobby. It wasn’t until 2011 that she decided to start her own fitness education program and consulted with gyms across the country. But, ultimately she knew she wanted a studio to call her own.

During this time, Christine and her husband Pat were enjoying life as a young married couple living and working in Philadelphia. Although they considered themselves “city

folks,” once they decided it was time to start a family, they made the move back to Christine’s Delaware County roots. But life wasn’t going exactly as planned. “We moved out of the city and thought we could start a family right away. But I suffered from infertility and miscarriages and had almost given up on having a family,” said Christine. “At that point I decided to put all of my energy into opening a studio.” Pat was on board too. And as a finance professional, he could handle the business side of things while Christine would handle the creative side and the day to operations. “I’m very lucky that he loves spreadsheets,” Christine said jokingly.

they even offered personal “pods.” “We’re lucky to be in the space we are in,” said Christine. “We can easily fit 25 people in a class, even socially distanced.” They also Christine DeFilippis, instituted a proof of vacOwner of Pop Fit Studio cination requirement and Photo by AMC Photography Studios a mask policy, which has helped their clients feel safe coming to the studio.

The couple found the location above Applebee’s to be a great fit for their dream studio. Previously a Burlington Coat factory, it needed quite an overhaul, but they were up for the challenge. They opened Pop Fit Studio in May 2018, but it wasn’t without some twists and turns along the way. Shortly after signing the lease and in the midst of the renovations, Christine and Pat got the exciting news that they were expecting a baby! Their son Nico came a month early, just three months after they opened the studio. Born with a cleft lip, Nico spent ten days in the NICU and required several surgeries in the first few months of his life. “We weren’t able to dedicate the time we needed to the studio at first,” explained Christine. “We finally got the studio in a good place in late 2019/early 2020.” Then COVID-19 hit that spring.

Pop Fit Studio has twelve staff members and is planning to hire a full-time manager as well as more front office staff in the new year. In addition to their classes for adults, they also offer kids classes and private parties including bachelorette and girls’ night outs. Christine also hosts a weekly podcast called Breaking Body Bias, where she and her colleagues talk to inspiring people about their relationships with food and ideas about what being healthy really means.

Rising to the next challenge, Christine and Pat knew they had to be innovative and were able to create a lot of online programming, allowing them to survive the pandemic. And once restrictions began easing up, their large studio was able to accommodate members through socially distanced classes and

Christine, Pat and their staff have not only created an environment that helps clients feel their best and that fits their lifestyles and schedules, but they make working out FUN! No wonder their members keep coming back for more. “It’s so rewarding and inspiring to see people with similar goals help each other succeed,” Christine said, proudly. “The best part of my job is seeing happy, sweaty faces in the studio.” Pop Fit Studio is conveniently located 1305 West Chester Pike in Havertown. How to Fix Common Plumbing Problems in Your Home

ripping Faucets: First, turn off the main water line going to the faucet. Then, disassemble the faucet to find the damaged washer. When you go to buy the necessary washer, you should definitely bring both the old washer and the part it connects with. When you have the correct new washer, put everything back together and enjoy the lack of dripping. Preventative measures are few when it comes to dripping faucets. The best way to keep the washer intact is to slowly turn the water on and off and don’t overtighten. Slow-Draining Sinks: If the clog remains after you suction with a plunger, try using a plumber’s snake to grab and pull out the blockage. A combination of a cup of vinegar and ½ cup of baking soda can also sometimes break down the blockage and force it out. As a last resort, you can use a store-bought chemical solution that dissolves and clears most blockages. It’s important to follow the instructions exactly so there are no unsafe or unnecessary chemical reactions. To prevent future blockages, limit the types of substances that go down the drain. Wipe up hair with a

tissue rather than wash it down the drain, and avoid pouring grease down the drain. Clogged Bath or Shower Drain: Some blockages get to the point where no water can drain at all. If this is the case, you can follow most of the same steps above for fixing slow-draining sinks. If you notice that the bath or shower drain is clogged, stop using it immediately. You don’t want water to build up in the tub because that makes it much more difficult to clear out the clog. If you find yourself in a flooded situation, try using the plunger or plumber’s snake to allow water flow. Once the water has drained, try the vinegar and baking soda solution, or follow the instructions on the store-bought solution exactly. Low Water Pressure: Calcium buildup from your water supply can cause blockages at the ends of aerators and showerheads. A simple vinegar scrub and soak can help unclog them. Take an old toothbrush, soak it in vinegar and scrub the afflicted parts. For more serious buildup, put the vinegar in a bag and place it so the aerator or showerhead is immersed in the vinegar. Secure the bag around the affected part, and let it soak for a couple of hours before removing and wiping it dry. M

HVAC Zoning: What Are Your Options?

M

ost homes use one thermostat that serves the entire house. As simple and easy as this system is to set up and maintain, it results in uncomfortable areas of your home. Wherever the thermostat is, there too will be your comfort. If you’re tired of shivering in one room while another remains too warm, here are some ways to introduce zone control into your home. DAMPERS IN DUCTWORK In most furnace systems, one thermostat controls the furnace and the air is distributed throughout the ductwork without any variations in airflow to suit the needs of individual spaces. Adding dampers to branches and having each damper open and close according to the needs of each zone thermostat will allow for greater control in each area. Depending on your ductwork, you can have one damper serving each floor of your home.

BOOSTED AIR CIRCULATION If some areas of your home are susceptible to air stratification — where hot air stays at the top near the ceiling and cooler air sinks, giving you the chills — you may benefit from improved air circulation to take care of this zone. Rather than modify your entire home’s system to improve comfort in this problem area, a targeted solution will give proper control and comfort throughout your home. M

Maintain Your HVAC System During Every Season

For hot water heating systems, each radiator can have a control valve that opens and closes when the space thermostat calls for heat. You can also group radiators in a given space and connect them to a thermostat that serves that common area. SUPPLEMENTAL HEAT IN CRITICAL ROOMS If dampers aren’t practical for your home’s system (due to duct design, for example), adding supplemental heat to a space that typically doesn’t get enough might be the best solution. You may have a situation where one room or area is colder while the rest of your home remains comfortable. Adding another source of heat in this one space will allow you to only use what you need, so you don’t have to overheat the rest of your home to stay comfortable. MULTIPLE SMALLER UNITS A decentralized system allows for control in each zone, with individual thermostats controlling each piece of equipment. For example, multiple heat pumps serving separate rooms or groups of rooms will run as needed to serve each zone. This is not a common system but you can discuss it with a professional to see if it works for you.

History Spotlight

An Early Preservation Success Story Written by Doug Humes Photos courtesy of the Marple Historical Society

T

he Lawrence family (for whom Lawrence Park was named) lived for generations at the confluence of Darby Creek, West Chester Pike, and Lawrence Road, on the border between Marple and Haverford townships. Sometime between 1690 and 1710, Henry Lawrence, an early settler, built a log cabin along the creek. The cabin was expanded over the years – like with the Massey House: Additions were added by subsequent generations as they needed additional space. Nearby they built a saw mill, which continued in operation well into the 20th century. In 1960, the cabin property was owned by Harry Dash of Broomall. The old home had been vacant for some time, and Dash proposed to demolish the house and replace it with a car wash and bowling alley, two very popular uses in the expanding post-war suburbs. Who would object?

A small band of history-minded people began to voice objections to the demolition of one of the oldest surviving structures in Delaware County. In Haverford, Madge Roney circulated a petition that attracted over 1,000 signatures opposing the demolition. Hilda Lucas of Broomall sought to have the Pennsylvania Historical Commission weigh in. Joyce Adams of the Haverford Historical Society alerted their members to the issue.

The Haverford Township Commissioners offered to allow the building to be moved to a township park site. Delaware County Commissioner (and later US Congressman) G. Robert Watkins voiced his support for saving the building, but not with taxpayers’ money. Dash proposed to give the building to anyone who was willing to take it from his site. Everyone agreed that it should be saved, and that the money should come from someone else. Prayers went up, and an angel appeared. Lawrence M. C. Smith, a well-to-do Philadelphia lawyer, conservationist, collector and farmer with ancestors in the Marple community, came to the rescue. Dash donated the building to Smith, and in March 1960, the building was carefully dismantled and placed in storage until Haverford Township decided where to host the cabin.

Volunteers sprang into action. Haverford hosted historic home tours in 1960 and 1961, and donated the proceeds to the renovation effort. A fund was created in memory of Mrs. Charles Carver, former President of the Haverford Historical Society. The log cabin was moved, reassembled and then dedicated at its new site along Karakung Creek on October 7, 1961. It sits there to this day, operated by the Haverford Township Historical Society (www.HaverfordHistoricalSociety.org).

A Comparison of Gas-Log and Wood-Burning Fireplaces

G

as fireplaces first came about as an alternative to wood-burning fireplaces, not as a means to replace them. However, gas fireplaces have become increasingly popular as convenience has become a major factor for consumers. While gas fireplaces cannot mimic the natural crackling and popping attributes of a wood-burning fireplace, a gas fireplace provides an easier, safer and cleaner way to enjoy a fire. The first element of a wood fire is the kindling, which must be gathered and then lit. Next comes positioning the wood logs on the grate and waiting for them to catch fire from the kindling. Most people do not want to get involved in that process and this is why a lot of wood-burning fireplaces sit dormant. Though there may be a general belief that gas fireplaces don’t compare to wood-burning in terms of appearance, that isn’t always true. Gas fireplaces offer a level of ambiance and realism comparable to wood. The hand-painted ceramic logs give an authentic feel of real wood, and with the amber glow it looks as if they are actually on fire. In fact, some gas fireplaces have been known to be mistaken for wood-burning fireplaces. Gas fireplaces also offer more heat output and flexibility than burning wood. Most gas fireplaces produce a warm radiant heat, like the heat from a wood-burning fireplace, but more of it. Some gas fireplaces can even supplement the heat needed for your home. The temperature and flame appearance can easily

be adjusted as well. Instantly increase or decrease the flame height to keep the room at a comfortable temperature while still enjoying the ambiance and atmosphere created from the gas fire. Also, gas fireplaces open up the doors to endless possibilities and styles. Whether a home is traditional, contemporary or an in-between transitional décor, there is a gas fireplace to complement any style. Even if a home does not have an existing wood fireplace, a gas fireplace can easily be added because no chimney is required. Lastly, gas fires burn clean. They do not give off smoke, and they don’t require an annual chimney cleaning or leave behind ashes to sweep up like wood-burning fireplaces do. Most gas fireplaces have remote options to control temperatures and set timers. Best of all, there is no waiting for the flames to die down. The simple push of a button on a remote or wall switch turns the fireplace off. So the next time you’re about to go outside and collect logs to start your fire, think about all the advantages a gas fireplace gives you. Chopping wood and gathering kindling will become a thing of the past. M

Value, at the end of the day, is what bridges the gap between low price desires and the premium products we offer at Scott’s Fireplace Products.

How to Best Help Your Attorney: Communication and Preparation

U

pon engaging an attorney to represent you, the two most important things for YOU to do are (1) communicate with your attorney, and (2) help your attorney prepare your case. You know the facts. It’s important to tell your attorney all that you remember and know. Most people aren’t aware of the amount of work that they personally need to do to help their attorney to prepare their case. Communication: When you remember a detail about your case, write it down. Convey the details to your attorney. Always provide a clear and concise Subject line for each email you send. Recalling facts about the case can often cause unpleasantness such as reliving the trauma. Such feelings can result in you writing long emails that contain so much emotion that the original details get lost. Try to stay focused and provide only the important details. Your attorney will let you know where and what he or she needs you to expand upon. Let your attorney determine what details are important and which are not. Your attorney knows what elements need to be proven, and will let you know what details are less relevant or are not relevant at all. Keep an open channel of communication with your attorney. Make sure they always have your current postal mailing address, email address and phone number. Preparation: Your attorney needs your help in preparing the case. After you have communicated all the facts, your attorney will master them. Your attorney will guide you on what they need to prepare the case. They may do what many attorneys do: Ask you to start a calendar or diary in which you will record a chronological account of the relevant events of your case. Go back in time and write down what you remember exactly as you remember it. You never know when you’ll remember something, so keep a notepad handy. Taking pictures when the event occurs or soon thereafter can also be very important because those photos could become evidence in your case. Gathering documentation such as bank statements takes time, so if they’re required, begin gathering them as soon as possible. Just remember that the quality of the information is far

more important than the quantity. Your attorney will guide you about what to retrieve, and will examine and categorize what you provide. Last but not least, create your own file on the case by making a copy of everything you send or give to your attorney. Remember, the better prepared you and your attorney are, the better your chance of success. M

Our Community

December Was Full of Holiday Cheer in Marple Written by Holly Stupak

L

ast month’s holidays brought lots of holiday spirit to Broomall. After the 2020 holiday season was marked by pandemic-related cancellations, the Marple community welcomed back their traditional in-person festivities in 2021 and even offered new holiday events for the community to come together. One of our community’s favorite holiday traditions, the Marple Tree Lighting ceremony was back and better than ever. On December 4th, the event kicked off with a parade, courtesy of the Broomall Fire Company and the Marple Civic Association. Children and their families waved to Santa along West Chester Pike as he headed through parts of Broomall and ended at Veterans Park for the tree lighting. The event was co-sponsored by Mrs. Marty’s Deli, who provided delicious refreshments, and featured performances by Art in Motion Dance Studio. There were also plenty of edible tree decorations provided by local scout troops. The evening ended with a visit from Santa and legendary mailman Jim in the gazebo.

Not only did Art in Motion entertain the crowd at the Tree Lighting ceremony, but they held their first ever Holiday Spectacular on December 11th, a fundraiser called “Raising for Rosie.” The holiday showcase was a benefit for three-yearold Rosie McKenna, the younger sister of two Art in Motion dancers. Rosie was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive brain tumor when she was 11 months old. After initially undergoing a successful brain surgery, 16 months of chemotherapy and proton beam radiation at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, her tumor unfortunately returned just eight short weeks after treatment. Rosie underwent another brain surgery and started a new chemo protocol, which she continues today. Diane Caporella, owner of Art in Motion, said that despite all of this, Rosie has continued to be a bright, beautiful, sweet and extremely strong little girl. She is adored and supported by many, especially her parents, two older sisters, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. “Art in Motion Dance Studio wanted to show Rosie how much we admire her resilience and strength,” said Diane. “We were happy to show our love and support to Rosie and her family by making her the focus of our holiday show this year!” The event was held at St. Luke Greek Orthodox Church and featured Art in Motion dancers of all ages. Performances included excerpts from the Nutcracker as well as holiday classics like Sleigh Ride and Jingle Bell Rock. The finale was a “gold out” for childhood cancer and everyone from Art in Motion danced freestyle to Rosie’s favorite song by Nicki Minaj. The Marple Civic Youth group also got into the holiday spirit this year by holding a Holiday Lights Contest. What better way to bring the community together than to see which of your neighbors had the most elaborate light display? Marple Civic Youth board member Kaley Musi handled the social media and publicity for the contest. “We were excited about the response we got and the large number of entries,” said Kaley. “After last year’s holidays were rough for so many people, this was a great way to get people of all ages excited about the holidays this year.” Kaley and her fellow Youth Board members Marissa D’Ambrosio, Christian Sessa, Dominic Carafa and Joe Downs served as the judges and a total of $400 in prizes was awarded for first to fourth place and honorable mention. Under the direction of parent advisor Demetra D’Ambrosio, the Youth Board was founded last year to create fun and safe activities for teens. “The holiday light contest was a way to promote community involvement in a fun & festive way,” said Demetra. “It created a reason for the kids to get together to go out and look at the lights and have something fun to do.” The contest also raised money for the MCY 8th grade graduation celebration dance. For more information and to see more of their upcoming events visit their Marple Civic Youth Facebook and Instagram pages. Thanks to everyone in the Marple community who helped make the holidays extra special and festive this year! M

We would also love to hear about team-led charity events, fundraisers, achievements off the field or court, and coaches who made a difference. Publisher Bob Blaisse is excited about this new venture. “Our hometown magazine enjoys Bringing People Together through our local features, and we know there are so many children, teenagers, adults and even seniors who are on sports teams or are involved in sports-related activities,” Bob said. “Broomall has so many thriving sports organizations and residents who are passionate about sports that we decided to bring more of those stories to our pages.”

Suffering from Pinched Nerves?

A

re you suffering from pinched nerves? It is possible for a pinched nerve to happen anywhere in your spine, which can affect nerves that go to your arms, legs, neck, back, head – virtually any muscle and even internal organs. Pinched nerves can negatively affect your general health, posture, energy level, resistance to disease – even your emotional health. Your Nervous System There are billions of nerve fibers in your body, often arranged in bundles called nerves. Without nerves, you couldn’t see, hear, touch, taste or smell. You also wouldn’t be able to feel hot, cold, pain or pleasure. Your body would be the ultimate sensory deprivation tank. Without nerves, you would be entirely paralyzed because no muscles could move. Many billions of nerves travel inside the spinal column as part of the spinal cord, and they exit through openings between the

vertebrae. After leaving the spinal column, the nerves separate into smaller and smaller bundles, and travel to every system and organ in your body. If the vertebrae are misaligned even slightly, they may cause the nerves to be pinched, irritated, compressed or stretched. What Can Cause a Pinched Nerve? A fall or an accident – even a very mild one that happened years ago – may be enough to misalign your spine. Some other common causes are unnatural sleeping positions, poor posture, fatigue, computer and cell phone usage, stress, poor nutrition or any combination of these. Symptoms of Pinched Nerves Manifest Differently When the spinal column is misaligned, the entire skeletal system will become off balance, which can cause fatigue and exhaustion. When the misaligned vertebrae compress the nerves, the nerve impulses are altered and can affect the area in the body that the nerve is delivering the message to. Some symptoms of altered nerve impulses include headaches, seizures, vertigo, digestive issues, hearing, vision and a host of other problems. Do All Pinched Nerves Hurt? Less than 10% of all nerves can feel pain, so you don’t always know if there’s a problem. Most people with pinched nerves are not in pain. People with painful pinched nerves might be considered the lucky ones because they know they have a problem and are therefore more likely to get it checked out. Your Pinched Nerve Solution Chiropractors are experts who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of pinched nerves. If you’re not sure what’s causing the pain in your back or somewhere else in your body, call a chiropractor, to discover if your nerves are pinched. M

Flight on Ice Skating Rink: A Community Partnership to Benefit Our Veterans Written by Sheila Turner-Hilliard

S

hake off those winter-weather blues, grab your skates and hit the ice for some fun, now through the end of February, at Flight on Ice’s Energy Transfer Veterans Memorial Rink. This pop-up winter wonderland right in our own backyard features a full-size (60' x 100') outdoor skating rink, skate rentals, festive lighting, delicious food and beverages catered from DiFabio’s restaurant, heated hospitality tents, cozy firepit seating, special events and entertainment for the whole family. The buzz surrounding the rink’s opening in early December was undeniably electric, and the reviews since then have been spectacular. Season passes, family 4-packs and individual online ticket sales have been as brisk as the weather, as many of our Friends & Neighbors gathered in good cheer to enjoy the rink and all its splendor over the holiday season. But just because the holidays are over doesn’t mean the ice is melting yet! Oh no, the Flight on Ice team is just getting started! January and February feature a jam-packed lineup of special events and party opportunities. You don’t have to wait for the weekend to enjoy a night out with friends, take your special someone on a date or make family memories. Weeknight specials include Memorial Mondays, Taco Tuesdays, Family Night Wednesdays and Skating Under the Stars Thursdays. In addition, the team at Flight on Ice is excited to fill your calendar with special events for Super Bowl Sunday, Valentine’s Day and President’s Day weekend. Save the date and get ready for a heat wave on Friday, January 21st, when the temperature climbs to a steamy 98°. The word on the street is that Nick

Lachey from the popular 1990s boy-band 98° may be making a special appearance at the rink while he is in town to perform a concert at The Drexelbrook Events Center in Drexel Hill. It’s hard to believe that what was an empty lot just a few short months ago has been transformed into such a fun, vibrant winter wonderland for all ages. But the Flight on Ice folks and Edgmont Township officials worked hard together to make it happen. This rink is the fourth location for Flight Entertainment President and Managing Partner, Jon Schaffer, and his business partner, Colby Cohen, who is a former NHL hockey player and current Chicago Blackhawks Content Analyst. Combining Jon’s expertise in the entertainment industry with Colby’s background in hockey rinks results in a high-quality constructed site with an unbeatable entertainment experience. Flight on Ice’s location and its mission were made possible through a partnership between those two partners and the Delaware County Veterans Memorial Association (DCVMA). Jon Schaffer said that the mission of Flight on Ice is to donate a significant portion of their proceeds to that worthy organization and other similar organizations that support veterans. “We want to help shine a light on our veterans,” Jon explained. “Through our donations and our new community-partnering educational program, we want to help teach younger generations what it means to serve our country.”

Jon and his team worked with the deBotton family of National Realty Corp. and Steve Byrne, Executive Director of Visit Delco, to create Skip and Skate, an initiative that helps students, businesses and members of the general community get acquainted with the DCVMA. The program includes tours of the Delaware County Veterans Memorial site and presentations by local veterans of all ages. There is a lot of fun packed into the program! Skip and Skate school programs provide students and teachers the opportunity to skip school for this state-accredited educational seminar, then enjoy a 90-minute skating session with skate rentals, food, drinks, giveaways, great music and more. Jon said that local businesses are welcome to sponsor a Skip and Skate event, to show their support and commitment to educating our youth. Interested community leaders, business owners and individuals should contact Flight on Ice for more information on how to become a sponsor.
