Dear Friends & Neighbors, While the Summer of 2020 is now past, it will not be forgotten. The summer of social distancing, no fans in stand and mask-wearing, will long be remembered. And now we get to celebrate Halloween all month by continuing to wear our masks, knowing that doing so is certainly no treat, but is for sure the trick to health safety.

As we fall into Autumn, you’ll notice a few new Sponsors of Marple Friends & Neighbors in print and online at www.MarpleMag.com. I know you’ll fall for them too. First, I want to thank Marple’s Freddy’s Steakburgers, one of our Inaugural Sponsors which launched Marple’s hometown magazine as our Lead, Back Cover Sponsor. After two years, Freddy’s has renewed their sponsorship and graciously agreed to come inside the magazine, to allow another local business the benefit of getting well noticed every month on our Back Cover. Now comes the fun part. I’m asking Readers to help us determine which local business should take over the Lead Sponsor of our magazine. (See my Bringing People Together feature on page 16 to learn how you can help us make that decision.) Another first-class business joins us this month as a new hometown Sponsor, First Class Auto Tags Service. Broomall’s own go-to-person Michelle McFadden, and her daughter Emily, have now extended their Harrisburg services related to automobile registrations, driver’s licenses and more, to being in service to their hometown as a magazine Sponsor. Look for First Class Auto Tags Service first ad on page 23, and look for their business inside Joe’s Cycle Shop on West Chester Pike, across from the Country Squire Restaurant. I’m happy to also announce: I found you a Plumber! Our newest Sponsor and Expert Contributor is Master Plumber Ryan Corbett, co-owner of Dream Team of PA. Look for Ryan’s upcoming features in which he’ll share his expert insights and advice. And check out Dream Team’s first ad on page 9 to learn more about Dream Team’s plumbing, electric and HVAC services. Welcome aboard, Ryan! Lastly, my sincere thanks! Comments keep coming back from our Sponsors whose ads are seen on these pages. Thank you for voting with your wallet. Thank you for choosing to do your business with your hometown Sponsors who make your hometown magazine possible. Your buying power which is Bringing People Together through our magazine every month has helped to bring you this October 2020 issue, which I hope you’ll enjoy.

Dear Residents, Signs of fall are popping up all through our community, although it’s a fall like no other. Many families are navigating hybrid and virtual school and, just like this Summer, we’ll have to come up with new things to do this Fall. Our typical favorite fall activities may be off-limits this year, but we can still enjoy a pumpkin spice latte and cheer on the Eagles from home. The October Resident Feature family is the DiBerardos: Salvatore. Alexis, and their one-yearold daughter Gia. They have embraced working from home these last several months, as it’s given them more time to spend with their daughter and prepare for baby number 2, due in November. Our Business Profile features Lindsey Poeth, CSA®, Owner of Senior Oasis Advisors Mainline, a free senior housing placement service for individuals and families. And this month, you’ll be inspired by Our Community feature about how patients with Parkinson’s disease are able to improve their quality of life through in-person and virtual boxing. Our October Calendar offers some fresh ideas for gathering safely with friends and family, as well as more virtual cultural events to check out this Fall. Happy reading!

Is Your Gas Fireplace Winter-Ready?
T
his year has been one of the most unique/different years any of us have been through. 2 020 has been full of business and school shutdowns, extended quarantines, followed with gradual business and school reopenings (some in person and others virtually). All the while, masks have become the new norm. For most of us, summer flew by because, come to think of it, there was not much of a summer to be had. We have been stuck at home, trying to get home projects done and parents trying their best not to let their children drive them up a wall. This is a great time for homeowners to get a jump start on maintaining their gas fireplaces. Gas fireplaces add wonderful ambiance to any room and can be great heat supplements (especially if an unfortunate power outage occurs), but they have a nasty habit of not working when homeowners need them most. When you call the establishment where the gas fireplace came from and request a service appointment, you’ll likely learn there is already an extreme backlog for service. This is because many homeowners do not think about service or maintenance until their gas fireplace is not functioning properly. This always seems to happen in the middle of winter if a gas fireplace is not properly maintained. Preventative maintenance is the best type of maintenance, and homeowners with gas fireplaces can avoid waiting several weeks for service during the cold winter months by being
proactive and having their fireplace cleaned and serviced in the early fall. How often a gas fireplace should be serviced depends on the manufacturer and model. Also, knowing whether the fireplace damper is opened (vented) or closed (vent-free) or if the unit is behind a solid single-glass window (direct vent) will aid in expediting service calls. Gas fireplaces do require a level of maintenance similar to house furnaces and air conditioning systems, and as long as they are maintained properly, they can provide heat and ambiance without interruption during the frigid days of winter. So, enjoy the fall transition from summer to winter but do not forget about the gas fireplace. Getting it serviced prior to the cold winter months helps homeowners avoid a potential operation lapse or a frustrating long wait for service. M

How Boxing Fights Against Parkison’s Disease Written by Holly Stupak Photos from the collection of Dr. Jennifer Brown, PT, DPT

ou don’t have to have experience as a fighter or boxer to join Rock Steady Boxing. You just have to show up and have fun! That’s the motto of Rock Steady Boxing (RSB), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to “fight back” against Parkinson’s disease (PD). “For Parkinson’s patients who have been suffering for years or even those newly diagnosed, this program can change the course of the disease and improve patients’ quality of life,” said RSB Broomall Founder/ Director Dr. Jennifer Brown, PT, DPT. “Our classes are led by physical, speech and occupational therapists who specialize in PD and PD Plus diagnoses such as Lewy body dementia.” It’s estimated that more than 1 million people in the United States are diagnosed with PD, a degenerative movement disorder that can cause deterioration of motor skills, balance, speech and sensory function. Founded in 2006, RSB was the first program in the country dedicated to the fight against Parkinson’s. They A pre-COVID live RSB class now have 700+ affiliates in Broomall, doing planks worldwide. The boxing routines focus on posture, balance, walking, voice and socialization, and are tailored to meet an individual’s needs. Dr. Jennifer (“Jen”) Brown, PT, DPT is the Founder/ Director of the Broomall and the Main Line RSB affiliates. She earned her Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy from Springfield College in 1996, and her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Temple University in 2008. After working for Main Line Health for 15 years, Jen founded Dynamic Home Therapy & Neurofit (DHT; www.LiveDynamicNow.com) in 2011. DHT provides neuro-based treatments to patients in their own homes as well as to folks in assisted living facilities. DHT’s staff of OTs, PTs and SLPs work with patients with PD as well as Alzheimer’s disease, traumatic brain injury and other movement disorders. Jen’s area of expertise is in adolescent and geriatric physical therapy with the neurologically impaired population. In 2009, 6

she received her Geriatric Clinical Specialist certification, and in 2011, she was certified in LSVT BIG for PD, a treatment approach that addresses the movement aspects of the disease and leads to significant improvements in function, balance, and gait. Her inspiration to go into this field came from personal experience. “I helped care for my grandfather when he was suffering from Parkinson’s disease in his 80s,” said Jen. “I wanted to help people be able to do more than just sit in a chair.” For years, Jen was interested in starting her own RSB affiliate, knowing the impact it could have on her patients as well as other people with PD or other neurological conditions. “I wanted a program for my DHT patients, to keep them motivated after they were discharged from their therapy,” Jen said. “It also can be a built-in support group for everyone, to help with depression and anxiety, which are very common symptoms for those with Parkinson’s disease.” After becoming certified in RSB in 2017, Jen, along with her Assistant Manager Tracy Finney, PT MSPT, opened an RSB affiliate in Wayne, which since moved to Devon. In 2018, she opened the Broomall affiliate (Broomall.RSBAffiliate.com) in Young Forever Fitness. In-person RSB classes typically had about 10 members plus a coach and volunteers. In addition to Jen’s team that teaches classes on a rotating basis, she also has a Wellness Leader, Barrie Greenberg, DPT, who performs the intakes for new members. Caregivers or other care partners can attend and are referred to as their “corner person.” “We’ve had members as young as 40 years old up to some in their 90s,” said Jen. “We can tailor the workout to all different abilities
and different stages of the disease.” Each week, a different “theme” was offered, but every theme focused on optimal agility, speed, muscular endurance, accuracy, hand-eye coordination, voice, cognition, balance, posture and overall strength.
been a lifesaver,” said Ted. “It has improved some of my symptoms, and the friends I’ve met there have become like family!”
Since COVID-19 forced all gyms to stay closed, RSB Broomall has used Zoom to offer virtual classes for its members. Although they can’t do the same workouts at home on the bags, they’ve been able to offer shadow boxing, yoga, voice A virtual RSB class and tai chi, and they’ve even offered cognition classes as well as guest speakers. Because they’ve allowed members from different RBS affiliates to join the virtual classes, they have close to 70 members who hop on 3–5 days a week. “There is such a camaraderie with the group that we’ve also added virtual coffee and happy hours as well as trivia nights. The group loves catching up with each other before we start our classes so I always give them a few extra minutes to chat!” said Jen.
Betinna, another Rock Steady boxer from Newtown Square, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s 14 years ago when she was only 34 years old. “Rock Steady Boxing has been a saving grace for me,” she said. “Parkinson’s takes a little away from you every day, but the Rock Steady regimen helps me fight back, Betinna, a Rock Steady boxer quite literally. It’s about mainfrom Newtown Square taining physical strength and dexterity. But it’s also the emotional support and genuine friendships. Jen and her team keep me coming back every day.”
Newtown Square resident Ted has been a member of RSB for the past 2 years. “I joined Rock Steady the day after I retired and it’s
Whether it’s in person or virtual, RSB is a fun way to stay fit, protect the brain, and meet new people! Although a cure for Parkinson’s disease may be many years away, there’s evidence that by participating in the RSB program, progress can be made in all stages of the disease. “I always tell people who may be nervous about trying RSB, just jump in. It can change the course of your life,” said Jen. “Hope really does live here!” M

The DiBerardo Family:
Family Is the Heart of Their Broomall Home Written by Holly Stupak Photos by Sierra Clark Photography www.SierraClarkPhoto.com rdo
Sal, Gia and Alexis DiBera
W
hen it came to finding the perfect home to start their married life and raise a family, it was a no-brainer for Salvatore (Sal) and Alexis DiBerardo. Sal had lived in Broomall for over 20 years, surrounded by extended family including his loving grandparents. Sal and his dad were both graduates of Marple Newtown High School, and had fond memories of growing up in the Marple community. Although Sal’s wife Alexis is not from the area, she embraced Sal’s hometown and knew from Sal’s stories of his childhood that it was a great place to live.
Meanwhile, Alexis grew up with her parents and two sisters in Berks County, PA, and graduated from Wilson High School in 2009. Alexis played basketball for three years at her high school, which was known to be very competitive in athletics. The school's football team has even included players who went on to play professionally.
Now, with a one-year-old daughter and another baby girl due in November, they feel lucky to own a home in this close-knit community, and they love their family-friendly neighborhood. “Sal had so many fun stories about growing up here in Broomall,” said Alexis. “We can’t wait for our girls to have the same experience.”
Alexis and Sal met their freshman year in college. They lived in the same dorm and, after several chance meetings in the elevator, they started walking to class together, formed a friendship and eventually started dating. Sal ended up transferring to a different college, but the two continued their relationship. Born only a day apart (Sal likes to remind her she is a day older!), they realized they shared a similar sense of humor and the same values. “Sal has a more serious, practical side than I do,” said Alexis, “but I’m more of a worrier. We really balance each other out.”
Sal attended Saint Anastasia School and played CYO hockey and soccer for St. Pius X. In 2009, he graduated from MNHS, which his three sisters also attended and which his youngest sister currently attends. “I got a great education at Marple Newtown!” raved Sal. “I loved that my dad and my sister and I even shared a couple of the same teachers.”
Sal pursued a degree in Finance at West Chester University and received his B.S. in 2013. All four years in college, Sal worked as an intern at Apple in their King of Prussia location. By working for Apple and doing rotations at a few different businesses, he developed his many technology skills. A networking opportunity then led him to his current job in property and

casualty insurance. What he likes most about his job as a carrier underwriter is helping business owners achieve peace of mind through detailed risk management. He typically travels a lot throughout the mid-Atlantic region, but due to the pandemic, he’s been working from home and getting to spend more time with his family. Alexis was working for Main Line Health in Bryn Mawr when Sal told her about an opportunity at his company. Knowing how passionate Sal is about his company and his job, Alexis knew that it must be a great opportunity and couldn’t pass it up. She’s now the Administrator for the college internship program, helping place local college students in fields that interest them. “I really enjoy helping students achieve their career goals!” said Alexis. “And the other best part of my job? Working with Sal!” As a young couple, they lived in the Fairmount section of Philadelphia. “We look back on that time fondly,” said Sal. “The year we lived there, the Eagles won the Super Bowl so we got to experience the parade and other fun events in the city.” They then decided to move to the suburbs, and found a great place in Broomall. On the very day they bought their home, they found
out that the Goldendoodle puppy they were waiting for was ready, so they picked up “Copper” after closing and welcomed him into their new home! Sal and Alexis were married in August 2018, at St. Pius X in Broomall. Their wedding downtown was at the Union Trust in Philadelphia, followed by a beautiful honeymoon in Italy. What they didn’t know was that their wedding

Full of personality, she loves listening to music, especially Disney songs. “She’ll dance to anything, too, even commercials,” said Alexis. “Gia just LOVES music!” Although they’re keeping the baby’s name a secret, girl number two is due to arrive in early November. The girls will be close in age and Alexis and Sal look forward to traveling with them. “We can’t wait to take them to Disney World as they get older. We’d even love to celebrate their fall birthdays and Halloween there.” When Gia was just four months old and right before COVID-19 affected everyone’s travel plans, the DiBerardos took a trip to Exuma, Bahamas, and found Gia to be a great travel companion. Another favorite place? The Jersey shore! Every summer, they look forward to spending a week with extended family in Wildwood Crest.

Working from home together with a young baby may sound stressful to most people, but Sal and Alexis have really cherished this time. “The silver lining has been getting to spend much more time with Gia, and not missing any special moments,” said Alexis. “We get to see things through our daughter’s eyes now, and we love activities like baking and crafting and spending time with family.” With many typical plans put on hold, the DiBerardos appreciate the extra time to work in their yard and to take Gia and Copper for walks in their neighborhood. After closing the office for three months due to COVID-19, Marple Dental reopened in June. Although it was initially quite challenging to acquire all the necessary PPE, Dr. Martin said the practice has gotten back to “as normal as things can be” during a pandemic. They purchased equipment for infection control, including a high-efficiency air filtration system to keep the air clean, and a high-tech vacuum that draws air away from the mouth. “Our staff has shown great patience during these difficult times and has embraced the new procedures,” Dr. Martin said gratefully. They’ve been able to keep patients separated by staggering appointments and taking one family at a time. “We are happy to have our families back, many of whom have been with me for 25 years. Having been closed for three months, we were very pleased at how well our patients took care of their teeth during the shutdown.” Dr. Martin said. “In these unprecedented times, Marple Dental wants their patients to know… Your family’s health is our top priority!” Dr. Martin and his staff welcome your dental inquiries by phone at 610-359-8181. If You’re Thinking of Purchasing New Carpet, Consider This
T
here’s a LOT to think about when purchasing carpet! These days, the material the carpet is made of can vary widely: You can choose from carpet made of nylon, polyester, Triexta or wool. All higher-end carpets will wear well. Keep in mind that the more you vacuum any carpet, the better it will wear. All carpets have some type of stain resistance, but the recommended level of stain resistance is based on where in your home or office the carpet will be installed. For example, for bedrooms, where you don’t usually eat food or drink beverages, minimum stain resistance carpet would be fine. And in bedrooms, you also don’t need to install top-of-the-line carpet or an upgraded pad. You can use almost any type of carpet with a regular pad. So, for a bedroom, your selection can be based on your personal preference, desired comfort and budget.
the liquid stains out of the pad. Again, the function that the room or area serves in your lifestyle can and should help you determine what type of carpet pad is best. As far as cleaning goes, all carpets need to be cleaned by a certified carpet cleaner every 12 to 18 months, to keep the carpet warranties in effect. If you need to file a claim, the mill will require proof (such as a receipt) of each time the carpet was cleaned. To understand all the different carpet styles and grades and to be sure you purchase what best suits your particular needs, it’s always wise to talk with your carpet professional. M

For stairs, living room, dining room and other high-traffic and/or food-consumption areas, you should definitely consider a higherquality carpet so it will wear and clean better. For a basement, where you may occasionally get a little water or moisture, you should consider purchasing an indoor/outdoor carpet. And what type of carpet pad is best, standard or moisture barrier? Have you ever cleaned your carpet and it looks great and then, after a few days, the stain comes back? That’s due to the stain getting into the pad. Moisture barrier pads help keep

with a goal of making a positive impact in my community by working directly with seniors and their families, often as a guide during a time of crisis.” Located in Malvern, Oasis Senior Advisors Mainline is a national organization that helps you choose the perfect place for your loved one, whether it is for an independent living situation or full-time care. Oasis works with hospitals and rehab facilities, but also directly with families. “Each family is unique in their needs, so each requires a specialized plan of action,” explained Lindsey. The Oasis team offers a compassionate and personalized approach as they help navigate the challenging process of selecting the perfect home for yourself or your family member. A few of their senior housing options include assisted living, skilled nursing homes, retirement communities and respite services. “We often work with seniors or their adult children if the seniors are unable to coordinate their care,” she said. Oasis Senior Advisors Mainline urges families to plan for the future, but many times they are called in to help after a traumatic event such as hospitalization after a fall. “We assist in each step of the way, from the initial conversation, discussing potential communities that fit their needs, organizing tours and ultimately helping to coordinate the move,” said Lindsey. Oasis Senior Advisors Mainline was started in 2018 and plans on continuing to grow, helping as many families as possible. “I love listening to the stories my clients have – and hearing about their experiences that made them who they are today,” said Lindsey, “I’ve been lucky enough to find out first-hand what it was like to be one of the first women to work as an Engineer in the NASA program, what is was like during the Korean War, and what it’s like to shoot a hole in one – all things that are a bonus for me on top of doing my job!”
These unprecedented times are having a negative impact on our seniors in ways beyond the virus itself. “We are very lucky in our area that many of the Assisted Living communities are COVID-free,” said Lindsey, “in part due to the steps they took to close the doors to outside visitors.” In support of the community during these times, the Oasis team is at the ready, donating PPE to the facilities in greatest needs: nursing homes and hospitals. Oasis Mainline coordinated the delivery of over 500 handwritten cards. “Many of the cards were from local girl scouts and school children, bringing a touch of warmth and love to those residents who were unable to see their families,” said Lindsey.

Reader Leaders Bringing People Together: Time to Nominate Our New Back Cover Sponsor
E
veryone knows Freddy’s Steakburgers serves up wonderful burgers, dogs, fries, and custard cones, right here in Broomall. Yes! Freddy’s food is a wonderful treat! But even more wonderful is how Freddy’s treats its loyal customers as a proud hometown Sponsor of Marple residents.
Whether it’s serving discounts to veterans, hosting fundraisers for local nonprofit organizations or being an Inaugural Sponsor of Marple Friends & Neighbors, Freddy’s has served us well. Without Freddy’s support as our lead Back Cover Sponsor, along with other advertisers you’ve come to recognize as hometown heroes, Marple’s free hometown magazine may not be in your hands right now or online at www.MarpleMag.com. After serving for two years as our magazine’s Back Cover Sponsor, Freddy’s has proudly renewed their hometown sponsorship agreement while graciously also agreeing to bring their ad inside our magazine so another business can benefit by being noticed monthly as our Lead Back Cover Sponsor. Now comes the fun part! Fun because our magazine has Reader Leaders who love helping our magazine grow in page count by helping us gain new Sponsors whose advertising helps to be Bringing People Together through more monthly features about Marple residents, organizations and businesses.

What’s a Reader Leader? It’s anyone who reads Marple Friends & Neighbors like you, who knows our advertising Sponsors need to hear that their sponsorship is valued by Marple residents. And many of you Readers are Leaders! I’m often told how you are voting with your wallets by showing your favoritism for our advertising Sponsors who make our magazine possible. Thank you. But now I have a special request of Reader Leaders: Let’s serve up our Back Cover to a local business we’re proud to show off to Marple residents as our Sponsor we’ll favor with our business. Who Should Be Our New Back Cover Sponsor of Marple Township Residents? Might a Lawyer become known by Marple residents as our Lead Sponsor? Will a Car Wash be a Sponsor of readers who love their magazine and love clean cars? Now that we can buy alcoholic beverages in Marple Township, could a well-known Restaurant benefit by being on our Back Cover? Should a Private School or Day Care Center already serving Marple families be seen on our Back Cover? Is there a leading Major Health Provider we all know who should be seen leading the way delivering Marple’s hometown magazine? Would a Realtor selling Marple homes sell them better on our Back Cover? Will you as a magazine Reader enjoy seeing shiny Jewelry or shiny New Cars on our Back Cover every month? Or should the Pizza Shop serving the best pizza in Broomall get delivered into Broomall homes every month as the Back Cover Sponsor of our hometown magazine? With your hometown magazine arriving every month and likely remaining on a table in your home all month long, you know there’s a 50% chance our new Back Cover Sponsor will be highly visible in your home every month, so this is important. Reader Leaders: Who do you prefer to be our new Back Cover Sponsor of Marple Township residents? If you have an idea or “friend in the business,” please let me know because after all, this is your hometown magazine. M

There Was a French Drain:
A Case Study
T
here once was a Marple Newtown homeowner who had a meticulously cared-for home. Every shrub was pruned and fertilized to perfection. Trees were planted selectively through the yard, to create shade. Over 30 years, the property had been upgraded with functioning gutters and exterior grading, and every fall, the house perimeter was raked out. But this homeowner believed he did not want or need to install a french drain. His floor drain and sump pit did a good job for the back door. And like many of his neighbors, he ran several dehumidifiers, which created a very hot basement. One day in August 2020, 8" of rain fell, and the total rain that month was over 14", causing moisture problems for his basement’s cedar paneling and custom carpet with built-in

bookshelves. Instead of cutting the walls 2½ feet off the floor to do mold treatment and install a french drain, the baseboard trim was removed, and a jackhammer and pick were used to tunnel under the wall studs. A french drain was installed without damaging the walls and at no additional cost. (This is one of many cost-saving waterproofing solutions that typically take decades to learn and perfect.) The cedar wall panels still looked great after they were wiped clean of the mold. The property was listed and sold with a fully warranted french drain system transferred to the new owner. Another similar case occurred for a couple who traveled extensively for business for weeks at a time. Their basement had a few leaks, but they were more concerned that stagnant water on the basement floor would create mold and bad smells. An emergency sump pump that would discharge outside was installed. During their first trip away, the hot water heater ruptured and continuously spilled steaming hot water on the floor. Though the basement didn’t flood due to rain water, without this emergency provision there would have been no stopping the basement filling up like a bathtub. Though the basement was like a sauna, the emergency sump pump worked as designed, and it prevented total destruction. Another homeowner had three dehumidifiers. After a crossvented windows solution was offered that would do a far better job and would use no electricity, the dehumidifiers were eliminated. The basement is now much drier, less noisy, has no mildew and no electric bill. Sometimes an ounce of prevention is the cure when the big rain comes! The new normal in weather is to have extremes in dryness, rain, wind and even hurricanes and spot tornadoes. What used to be a “once every 50 years” storm is now just a normal weather event. Keep venting the basement for humidity, mold control, Radon removal and breathable clean dry air. M

Don’t Fall Back on Your Maintenance
W
ith everything going on, it might seem that a furnace tune-up is the last thing you need to worry about. But ignoring the important task of maintaining your heating equipment will cause more headaches (not to mention money) in the long run as well as the short term. Here are seven reasons to keep your tune-up date for your furnace. 1. Energy Efficiency A poorly tuned furnace will cost you more in energy consumption as its efficiency falls. You might think you’re saving money by postponing this year’s maintenance but it’ll only cost you in utility bills.

2. Furnaces Fail Under Pressure At some point, the temperature will drop - drastically. If your furnace is ill-equipped to handle the drop in temperature, it will fail when you need it the most. Don’t let this nightmare happen to you and your family. Stay warm all winter long, not just on the mild days. 3. Risk of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning If your furnace doesn’t burn gas properly, you run the risk of carbon monoxide being produced. This puts you and your family at risk for carbon monoxide poisoning. This risk is definitely not worth the money you save from skipping your fall tune-up. 4. Breathe Easy A clean fan and filter will ensure that the air you breathe is free from dust and other allergens. This is critical for the cold days ahead when you’ll be spending more time indoors. 5. Quiet Run A finely tuned furnace, like a finely tuned car, will run rather than rattle. Keep the noise level at a minimum with a clean, balanced fan. 6. Avoid a Major Repair Regular furnace maintenance takes care of any small issues that come up so they don’t develop into major problems. You’ll also get a handle of your heater’s operation so you can plan for any anticipated replacements in advance. 7. Prolong Your Equipment’s Life Tune-ups don’t just postpone expensive issues with your furnace; they also buy you some time before the inevitable replacement. Keep your heating equipment running at peak efficiency and with minimal issues to ensure that you get the most out of it in the short term and for years to come. It’s time to book your furnace fall maintenance. Don’t fall back. Call a professional today so they can help you stay warm and safe this coming winter. M

Keeping Your Vehicle Ready to Roll
C&J Automotive Specialists
Do not leave the parking brake on for an extended period of time! Doing so can cause the brake pads and rotors to stick or fuse together. Moisture is the biggest cause, so avoid engaging the emergency brake if it just rained. Something that can cause your brakes to squeak after a period of not moving is rust, which will naturally occur over time, of course. But rust will build up more quickly when a car sits stationary for a period of time. Driving the vehicle will help knock rust off and prevent it from building up to a level that would damage the brakes and rotors.
D
uring these uncertain times, car owners everywhere find themselves driving less and less frequently. Our daily drivers are becoming weekend warriors or sitting for longer periods of time. Naturally, one may think, “Awesome, this is saving money!” on gas, maintenance items etc., that occur more frequently when using your car daily. But beware! Unexpected repairs could potentially be needed by allowing your vehicle to sit untouched for longer periods of time. Below are some helpful tips to keep your vehicle ready for when you need it. One of the biggest issues when a car sits for an extended period of time is the battery dying. The best way to prevent this, besides using a trickle charger, is to take your car for a 20-minute drive at least once every two weeks. Doing so will do wonders for your car’s health. Not only will it help preserve your car’s battery life but it will also help keep your tires from degrading, and keep all those moving parts under the hood well lubricated. Driving your car will naturally help lubricate the engine and other moving parts. If a car sits for too long, oil can start to settle, fluids can separate, and seals can begin to dry out, all of which can lead to costly unwanted repairs. Tires will naturally lose pressure over time, and if a car sits for too long in one spot, the weight of the vehicle can cause flat spots to develop where the rubber meets the road. Inspecting your tires before driving your car and checking your tire pressure regularly will help prevent unwanted tire damage. Be mindful of parking under sap trees and around wooded areas as critters love to find new homes under a car’s hood.
Do not ignore the warning or maintenance lights on your vehicle just because you are not driving it much during this time. Stay current on all preventive maintenance items such as oil changes, flushes, etc., so your car will be ready to go when you need it. M

One for the Ages Consider the trade-offs before deciding what age to begin taking Social Security benefits
A
s you get close to retirement, one of your biggest questions will likely be when to begin taking Social Security benefits. If you file at an age other than your full retirement age, your benefit amount will be reduced or increased. Filing earlier gives you a reduced benefit; filing later gives you an increased benefit. For someone with a full retirement age of 67, here is what you can expect, based on the age you actually file for benefits:
Social Security Benefit by Filing Age*: 62.... 70.0% 63.... 75.0% 64.... 80.0% 65.... 86.7% 66.... 93.3% 67.... 100.0% 68.... 108.0% 69.... 116.0% 70.... 124.0%
Everyone’s situation is unique, so it’s important to look closely at the trade-offs before making your decision. Here are some reasons you might want to claim benefits earlier: • You simply need the money to help pay living expenses. • You cannot work longer due to health reasons. • You have caregiving responsibilities for a family member. • You have been laid off or lost your job. Here are some reasons you might want to claim benefits later:
TRUST MATTERS.
• You don’t need the money right now, or you have income from other sources to tide you over (such as a pension or workplace plan). • You believe you have a longer life expectancy, during which higher payments would be helpful. • You plan to work at some level during retirement. • You simply like the idea of getting higher benefits over the long term.
ESPECIALLY WHEN IT’S YOUR MONEY. Have you ever wondered who your financial advisor really works for? I work strictly for you. I work hard to build a relationship of trust by providing thoughtful, unbiased guidance and placing your interests first. Invest with a knowledgeable financial advisor who’s on your side; someone who truly cares whether your investments are right for you.
Filing before your full retirement age while continuing to work could cause your benefits to be reduced based on an income calculation. No matter when you file, there is the possibility that a portion of the benefit will be considered taxable income.

Today, many financial advisors are educated on the various Social Security options that are available and the ramifications of those options. Make it a point to have this conversation with your trusted advisor and work with them to make sure your choice is part of your overall retirement plan. To increase your knowledge, check out AARP’s Social Security Resource Center (www.aarp.org/retirement/social-security) as well as the Social Security Administration’s Retirement Benefits web page (www.ssa.gov/planners). History Spotlight
Dr. John G. Thomas, Beloved Physician Written by Doug Humes
W
ho is the most significant person in the history of Marple and Newtown? My vote goes to Dr. John G. Thomas.
Born near Paoli in 1844, he enlisted at age 18 with the 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry, and served as 2nd Lt. on the staff of General O. O. Howard. Wounded in the thigh in 1864 while delivering a dispatch near enemy lines, he carried that bullet in his leg for the next 75 years. After the war, he studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and in 1869, began practice as a family physician, settling at a house on West Chester Pike near today’s Gauntlett Center. An ex-cavalry officer, he rode to his patients first on horseback, and later by horse and buggy, in all kinds of weather. When automobiles appeared, Dr. Thomas was one of the first doctors to travel to his patients by car. A practicing physician for 70 years, he brought more than 2,000 babies into the world and served heroically through smallpox epidemics and the 1918 flu epidemic.

The young doctor joined Marple Presbyterian Church in 1871, and served as clerk of sessions for 60 years; treasurer for 51 years; and Sunday school superintendent for 50 years. He was one of the promoters of the idea of a joint Marple-Newtown high school, and in 1914, he gave 4 acres of his land on which

long and productive life: “I have worked hard and never been afraid. And maybe I should add that I’ve always eaten plain food. With all the advances in medical science, people were healthier in those long-ago days.” Dr. Thomas rests in the Marple Presbyterian Cemetery, alongside Sproul Road. I pass him every day on my commute, and salute him – honored veteran, community volunteer, beloved physician.
