We know we are doing something good. One reader called to simply say how proud she is to live in Newtown Square when she considers how much she loves to see our “classy” magazine come in her mail each month. Of course, I did not fail to give the credit to all our classy Sponsors who make our hometown magazine possible.

Speaking of classy, this month we say goodbye and thank you to our classy friends Craig & Olivia Whitney, the husband and wife team who have served as our magazine’s Content Coordinators since Marple Friends & Neighbors was launched in print and online at www.MarpleMag.com. Craig & Olivia will soon become parents. Their efforts to help birth our hometown magazine will not be forgotten.

Craig, Olivia, thank you for your great service, which has been a blessing to our community, and best wishes as you move on to start your family together.

Taking over the role of Content Coordinator for our magazine is Liz Burnett, who has served as my Executive Assistant since January. Liz now looks forward to interacting more with our Readers, to develop local feature stories, and with our impressive team of local Expert Contributors whose features we all look forward to reading each month. Dear Residents, Autumn is always bittersweet for me: As cooler temps bring welcome relief from uncomfortable summer days, the brilliant falling leaves remind me that shorter days and winter chills are on the horizon. This autumn is extra-bittersweet for me, as we say thank you and goodbye to our devoted Content Coordinators Craig & Olivia Whitney. They leave two talented pairs of shoes for me to fill, but solid tracks to follow, and for that, I’m very grateful.

I now have the pleasure of Bringing People Together through stories about wonderful families like The Hildens and their committed service to their church, work and local communities. This month’s Business Profile, about Sproul Lanes and their recent extensive renovations and new Escape Rooms, shows how another Marple-area family has renewed their 58-year commitment to provide entertainment for all ages.

Is Right for You?

I

f you’ve spent the summer sneezing and wheezing inside your home, it may be time to invest in an air purifier. These devices reduce dust, pollen and other allergens inside the home, and some also help eliminate odors.

Air purifiers come in many different sizes and forms using different technologies. You can spend a few dollars to several hundred dollars for devices that may or may not solve your problem.

If your home has a furnace, you may already have an indoor air cleaner in place: the furnace filter. Some just help to keep the furnace clean and operating properly. Other higher quality filters are designed to filter out dust, mold, allergens, pet dander and other pollutants that circulate around your home.

Furnace filters should be changed at least quarterly and more frequently if someone in your household suffers from allergies or a respiratory ailment.

Most furnace filters have a MERV rating (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value): The higher the rating, the more contaminants can be filtered out. The American Lung Association recommends using furnace filters with a MERV rating of at least 10.

If changing your filter as recommended doesn’t help alleviate symptoms of allergies or asthma, then it’s time to consider additional air purification devices.

There are three basic kinds to choose from: 1. Mechanical filters remove particles from the air just like a furnace filter, but some may be more effective. At the high end, HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters have MERV ratings up to 20. They are not reusable.

2. Electronic air cleaners use an electrical field to trap particles.

They are typically made of woven polyurethane and poly propylene fibers with aluminum grates for rigidity, and fit over HVAC system vents and returns. When air passes through the fibers, it generates electrostatic charges that act like a magnet in attracting airborne particles. Electrostatic filters can be cleaned and reused.

3. Ionic air cleaners operate by releasing negatively charged ions into the air, which stick to positive charges inherent in pollutant particles. This causes the particles to stick to each other and settle out of the air onto objects in the room.

Another big consideration is whether you want a whole-house air purifier or one or more portable units. Whole-house units can be installed directly into your existing HVAC system whereas portable units can be set up wherever you wish. Portable units are noisier and less thorough in purifying the air throughout the home but they are cheaper and more convenient. Wholehouse cleaners require professional installation but they are more effective in decontaminating the entire home. Contact an indoor air quality specialist who can discuss these options and help you decide what would best suit your needs and your budget. M

Yes, the thrill of summer is behind us. The cooler brisk air can be felt along with the distinct fall aroma beginning to settle in.

The boardwalks and swimming pools have closed, and schools have now opened. The school year is under way, filled with our children’s after-school activities and all the fall sports. As pumpkin patches open, beer gardens begin flowing and fall festivals take center stage, we tend to push off thinking about our gas fireplaces until the last minute.

Homeowners with gas fireplaces can avoid waiting several weeks for service during the cold winter months by being proactive and having their fireplace cleaned and serviced in the early fall. Gas fireplaces do require a level of maintenance similar to house furnaces and air conditioning systems. As long as they are maintained properly, they can provide heat and ambiance without interruption during frigid winter days.

You can expedite your call to schedule a service appointment by providing several important facts about your gas fireplace: 1. The manufacturer and model (some gas fireplaces should be serviced more frequently than others); 2. Whether the gas fireplace damper can be opened (vented) or if it’s always closed (vent free); 3. Is behind a solid single glass window? (direct vent).

Gas fireplaces add wonderful ambiance to any room, and can be great heat supplements, especially if an unfortunate power outage occurs. But they have a nasty habit of not working when

What to Consider Before Purchasing New Carpet

here’s a LOT to think about when purchasing carpet. The material the carpet is made of can vary widely these days: You can choose from carpet made of nylon, polyester, triexta or wool. All higher-end carpets will wear well. Keep in mind that the more you vacuum any carpet, the better it will wear.

All carpets have some type of stain resistance, but the recommended level of stain resistance is based on where in your home or office the carpet will be installed. For bedroom carpet, for example, where you don’t usually eat food or drink beverages, minimum stain resistance would be fine. And in bedrooms, you don’t need to install top-of-the-line carpet or an upgraded pad. You can use almost any type of carpet with a regular pad.

So, for a bedroom, your selection can be based on your personal preference, desired comfort, and budget.

For stairs, living room, dining room and other high-traffic and/or food-consumption areas, you should consider a higher-quality carpet so it will wear and clean better. For a basement, where

you may occasionally get a little water or moisture, you should consider purchasing an indoor/outdoor carpet.

And what type of carpet pad is best, standard or moisture barrier?

If you’ve ever cleaned your carpet and it looks great, and then, after a few days, the stain comes back, that’s due to the stain getting into the pad. Moisture barrier pads help keep the liquid stains out of the pad. Again, the function that the room or area serves in your lifestyle can help you determine what type of carpet pad is best.

As far as cleaning goes, all carpets need to be cleaned by a certified carpet cleaner every 12 to 18 months, to keep the carpet warranties in effect. If you need to file a claim, the mill will require proof (such as a receipt) of each time the carpet was cleaned.

W

hen Chris Hilden was five, his family moved from Havertown to Newtown Square. He had been legally blind for a year, after an illness permanently damaged the optic nerve in his right eye. He started attending St. Lucy’s Day School for the Blind in Philadelphia, but in 4th grade, switched to St. Anastasia School. Chris graduated from Cardinal O’Hara High School, then earned his B.S. in Management Information Systems from Penn State. In 2012, he received his M.B.A. from The University of Massachusetts. Such impressive academic achievements and his career success have been due to high-magnification glasses, large-print reading materials, a supportive large family (nine siblings!), and a remarkably positive attitude about it all.

Karen Hilden also grew up in Newtown Square, and played softball from age six through high school. In her middle school band, she was a Feature Majorette, which prepared her well for the Color Guard of Marple Newtown High School’s Marching Tigers Band. During high school, Karen was also in the Crossmen Drum & Bugle Corps, and one of the founding members of West Chester University’s Field of View (indoor Winter Guard).

After high school, Karen started working as an LPN. She enjoyed it, and decided to earn an Associate Degree from Delaware County Community College and become a licensed Registered Nurse. Ever willing to serve, she was also a volunteer Firefighter and EMT. One night in 1996, when Chris was bowling with his league at Sproul Lanes, a medical emergency arose. One of the EMTs who arrived to help was Karen. Chris noticed her right away. He introduced himself, they exchanged emails, and started getting to know each other. Soon thereafter, Chris invited Karen to go to church with him one Sunday, and “it took off from there.

They got married in October 1998 at St. Pius X Church in Broomall, and had a fun honeymoon in Disney World. Karen then went back to school for her BSN from West Chester University.

When Chris and Karen’s family started growing, they moved into their current home in Broomall. Karen works as a Nurse at Bryn Mawr Hospital because it holds a very special place in her and Chris’ hearts: All four of their children were “preemies” born there. Due to a pregnancy complication, their first child was born at 32 weeks and given only two hours to live. Chris and Karen believe their prayers, combined with God’s grace and prayers by their large family and church community, helped their baby survive with no health issues. The doctor shockingly said this was “a one-in-a-million miracle baby!” The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurses were so attentive and caring during the baby’s two-month stay there that Karen felt called to give back, and since 2002, she has worked in several different departments at that hospital That miracle baby, Tom, now 19, attended St. Anastasia School, and in June, graduated from Archbishop Carroll High School, where he played percussion instruments in the Marching and Concert Bands. He also participated in several Kairos retreats, and then as a Leader, he helped Father Speziale (“Fr. Spez”) run some retreats. Tom achieved the ultimate Boy Scout rank continued on page 10

who also works there. The Hildens purposely bought their Evergreen Avenue home because it’s within walking distance to their church, the grocery store, and public transportation.

of Eagle Scout, and is now a freshman at Penn State, majoring in Cybersecurity. He’s in the Pep Band, and looks forward to activities and events planned by the Cybersecurity Club and a local community service club he recently joined.

Jon, age 16, also attended St. Anastasia. Now a junior at The Vanguard School, he’s an avid reader who gets excellent grades.

On Wednesday afternoons, he volunteers at the Marple Public Library, where he runs a highly interactive tabletop gaming group for kids. Jon also serves as a St. Anastasia Church Sacristan, ensuring the readiness of all items required for each Saturday evening Mass, and locking the church doors afterwards.

Josh, 15, attended Paxon Hollow Middle School, and is now a sophomore at Marple Newtown High School. He plays soprano saxophone in the Marching Tigers Band, and clarinet in the Concert Band. Josh is training to be a Sacristan after having assisted the priests for several years as an Altar Server at Sunday Masses.

When Amanda, now 13, finished 5th grade at Worrall Elementary, she received the Outstanding Citizenship Award. Now an 8thgrader at Paxon Hollow Middle School, she plays flute in the middle school band and piccolo in the MNHS Marching Band.

Amanda has enjoyed working with others in some Paxon plays.

She also enjoyed playing on a youth basketball team this summer, and expects to sign up for that again next year.

Rounding out the Hilden Family are Alex and Andy, two 10year-old cats, brothers adopted as kittens from the SPCA. Since 2003, Chris has worked as a Systems Analyst in the IT Department at Wawa’s corporate headquarters. He doesn’t drive, so Chris rides to work every day with his brother-in-law, 10 Marple Friends & Neighbors

In 2012, Chris felt called to be ordained as a Permanent Deacon in the Catholic Church. As a married man, Chris’ lifetime commitment to a parish-based ministry would require the full support of Karen and their children. Their faith and prayer led them to all agree. Chris applied, was accepted, and started the program at St. Charles Seminary. As he took the required courses over the next seven years, Chris opted to do the extra work to also earn an M.A. in Theology. In June, he was ordained a Deacon and assigned to his home parish, St. Anastasia. Chris will serve his church community by proclaiming the Gospel at Mass, and as needed, will preach a homily, visit the sick, and baptize babies. He can also officiate at weddings and wake services.

Chris is also an active member of the Knights of Columbus, and Karen serves St. Anastasia Church by singing in the Sunday Mass guitar group. “One of the things I’ve always loved about Chris is his spirituality and that he’s a man of faith,” Karen said. “When we met, I had never been baptized. Sharing our faith and seeing God’s work so often in our lives, such as helping us meet and the miracle of Tom’s life, have made Chris’ journey and vocation as a Deacon also be my vocation.”

The Hildens’ holiday and family celebrations are always big events because all but one of Chris’ 9 siblings live in Delaware County, plus he has 21 nieces and nephews. Karen’s mom passed away in 2013, and her dad, brother and sister live in Florida and South Carolina, so get-togethers are rare. The catchup chats, good food, and fun at Chris’ large family gatherings help Karen miss her relatives a little less.

Chris and Karen Hilden know without a doubt that God brought them together to share their love and faith with their children Tom, Jon, Josh and Amanda, and also to serve their parish and Bryn Mawr Hospital communities. The Hilden Family manifests their faith in a loving God through their many daily loving acts of service to so many. M

Reinvents Itself…Again!

I

f you haven’t been to Sproul Lanes in awhile, head on over for a very pleasant surprise: Delaware County’s largest bowling center has had renovations inside and out. This local favorite entertainment destination is now more entertaining than ever.

The three Marple-area brothers who founded Sproul Lanes in 1961 would also be surprised, delighted and very proud of how their vision has made so much fun possible for so many. During the 1950s, Tom, Woody, and Dan Abbonizio had seen bowling become a very popular team sport and pastime in the US, especially in Pennsylvania. They owned multiple properties and multiple businesses, including a construction company, and were always looking to expand. So they combined their building know-how and business expertise with some land they owned, and built Sproul Lanes and its connected Grand Plaza Shopping Center on S. Sproul Road in Springfield.

Sproul Lanes, still owned and now managed by the second-generation Abbonizio family, has outlasted other Marple Newtown area bowling centers because its owners have continuously reinvested in the business. “We’ve hired the right people, using a total team approach,” Steve Abbonizio said proudly.

Scouting

T

he Pinewood Derby is legendary: A Cub Scout is given a block of wood, four molded plastic wheels, and four small nails for axles. The goal is for the Cub Scout and a parent to work together, to transform that block of wood into a kid-sized custom race car that goes fast, looks cool, and is driven only by gravity from a downhill slope. Working to create a winner develops a Cub Scout’s craftsmanship skills and magical memories for that Cub Scout’s parents.

Gary and Cheryl Sebra are Scout parents. Gary, once a Boy Scout himself, is a lifelong resident of Newtown Square and Sergeant with the Newtown Township Police Department.

Cheryl is a Registered Dental Hygienist. Their two sons, Ty and Cole, have enjoyed participating in youth baseball, football, swimming, karate and Cub Scouts.

When their oldest son Ty went to 1st grade in 2014, Gary and Cheryl enrolled him in Cub Pack 315 because they wanted Ty to benefit from that sense of belonging and self-esteem that comes from Scouting. They also wanted Ty to experience working with other boys toward shared goals within activities that were not only through sports, and to build other skills while also having fun and making new friendships. One Scouting activity, the Pinewood Derby craft project, ignited in Ty a desire to succeed and win races.

The Sebra family spent hours together in their garage, making Ty’s first race car. Minutes before the race, Ty’s car got knocked off a table. It fell to the floor and its wheels broke off. With time running out, competitors offered spare wheels, and with only minutes to spare, Ty and Gary got the car back together with new wheels. Some super glue and some car body weight carved out, to meet weight requirements. Those repairs surely affected the car’s look but not Ty’s hopes of winning. During the multiple heats of the race, excitement built as Ty unexpectedly

won race after race. It came down to three cars in a final raceoff. Ty finished in First Place! The Sebra family was stunned and now forever hooked on Pinewood Derby Racing.

During Ty’s five years in Cub Pack 315, he finished in First Place four times, and in Second Place once. And for the past three years, he’s been invited to Regional District Races and finished in First Place each year, making him eligible each year for the Pinewood Derby World Championships in New York City. In 2017, Ty finished 35th overall and 8th for his Bear rank class of racers. In 2018, Ty improved: He finished 17th overall and 6th for his higher Webelo rank class.

Even before Ty’s younger brother, Cole, joined Cub Scouts, he wanted in on the Sebra Family racing tradition. In the race for siblings, Cole won First Place, and he was hooked! This past year, Ty and Cole worked with their parents in their garage, designing and sanding their cars, and working on the wheels and axles. Ty shared with Cole his secrets for winning Pinewood Derby Racing so that they could both be invited to the Pinewood Derby World Championships Races by winning First and Second Place. And that’s exactly what they did!

At the 2019 Pinewood Derby World Championship Races, hundreds of cars were entered with qualifying times separated by mere hundredths of a second. Ty Sebra finished 9th overall and 5th for his Webelo II rank class. With one more race left for Cole, and with big brother Ty standing by his side cheering him on, seven-year-old Cole Sebra finished 21st overall and took First Place for his Tiger rank class, to become the fastest Tiger Cub Scout Pinewood Derby racer in the United States.

Since its inception in 1953, Pinewood Derby Racing has become one of the most loved hobbies in the world, with over 100 million car kits purchased for Cub Scouts alone. Don Murphy, “The Father of the Pinewood Derby,” said he started this “to devise a wholesome constructive activity that would foster a closer father-son relationship and promote craftsmanship and good sportsmanship through competition.” That parent-child

magic is repeated annually by millions of Cub Scouts worldwide.

As for the Sebra Family, those magical memories developed together in their garage will last a lifetime.

When Ty Sebra finished 5th grade in June, he crossed over from Cub Pack 315 and into Boy Scout Troop 315, both chartered

by St. Anastasia Church, for boys of any denomination interested in being a Scout. With father Gary having been a member of Boy Scout Troop 315 himself, and son Ty now on the trail to Scouting’s highest honor rank of Eagle Scout, Boy Scout Troop 315 finally has its first father-and-son combination since being chartered in 1947.

Congratulations to Ty and Cole Sebra, on your success as Pinewood Derby World Champions! You are both winners who have made your parents and our community proud.

M

arple Newtown’s marching band made its first appearance in 1942. In the 1960’s, the band performed in competitions. By 1969, under energetic young band director Larry McGriff, they had won the last two competitions at the Virginia Beach band festival. McGriff inherited a good band program and led it to the next level. But at that next level, there were more expenses. More success meant more participants, instruments, uniforms, and travel expenses.

In 1970, the brain trust of the band – McGriff, treasurer John R. Longacre, band parent chairmen Robert Rust and Warren Given, and a host of other parents – had a brainstorming session.

The idea that they came up with was to host an annual band competition on their home field. Invite the best area high school bands to compete. Sell tickets and hot dogs and drinks, and seek sponsors. Save money on travel by hosting a “home game,” and raise money for the band in the process. The room filled with enthusiasm for the project. “What should we call it?”

“Bandarama!” Longacre suggested.

At the first Bandarama on October 3, 1970, the home band walked in to a drum cadence set by Senior drummer Dave Kovnat: the popular drum solo from the rock song “In a Gadda da Vida.”

Larry McGriff was not afraid to listen to his students and incorporate their ideas, as long as they committed to executing his musical and marching ideas to perfection. And with megaphone in hand, he would drill them to perfection.

The first Bandarama was a success. The first band to appear was from Nether Providence High School, followed by Coatesville, Salisbury, Plymouth Whitemarsh, Garnet Valley, Wissahickon, Shikillamy, Sun Valley, Archbishop Wood and Marple Newtown.

Eleven judges evaluated each performance and awarded Archbishop Wood the First Place trophy.

McGriff’s vision has been repeated each year since then, under his direction and then his successors, Bearj Jehanian and Mike Massimo. Thousands of student musicians have enjoyed the experience, and have been fully supported by thousands of school officials, parents, patrons, and music fans.

On Saturday, October 12, from 6 - 9:30 pm, the 50th Bandarama will play out at the MNHS field. Twelve regional high school bands will perform their field show. Come out and support our band, and enjoy the other incredible young musicians who will perform that night. It will be a night for the history books, so bring your children and grandchildren, to show them what’s possible with a musical instrument in their hands.

eople who know me in the community often greet me with kind words about Marple Friends & Neighbors magazine, and thanks for mailing them our monthly hometown magazine, which is also available to read and download online at www.MarpleMag.com. Of course, you know I never take the thanks. I tell everyone that Bringing People Together through the magazine is made possible only by the leadership of the businesses who are the advertising Sponsors of our magazine. It’s that simple.

The readers I meet often ask similar questions about the magazine, questions that have simple answers. But there’s also one harder-toanswer question I’m asked. I’ll share the Top 3 easy-to-answer questions, and end with that more difficult question, the one I’m asking you readers to help me develop some greater success in answering by way of your interest in also Bringing People Together.

Q1: How does the magazine select its monthly Resident Feature, the family for the cover?

The residents of our cover feature are nominated by readers. They can be a family, couple or individual, but families are by far the most often nominated. We look for residents with ties to the community through volunteer service, long-time residency or their children’s activities. Everybody has a story, and we love sharing it with the community. To nominate any Marple Township resident as the subject of any type of feature article in your hometown magazine, contact our Content Coordinator Liz Burnett at LBurnett@BestVersionMedia.com.

Q2: How are “Experts” selected to serve the magazine as Expert Contributors of feature articles?

Business segment “Experts” are Sponsors of our community through our magazine. Without them, we would have no magazine. We owe them our gratitude for selecting Broomall as a community they support through their marketing budgets as advertising Sponsors. And we should reward their sponsorship of our community by choosing to do business with them first, whenever possible. Each business “Expert” is exclusive to their market segment, so the magazine is careful to only engage respected businesses with trusted service in our community to serve as Expert Contributors of feature articles for our magazine.

Q3: How can I help grow the magazine so more local features can be included each month?

I call these readers who ask me this type of question Reader Leaders. My answer to them falls into three categories: (1) Nominate residents of our community for feature stories; (2) If you like to write, contact me so we can consider your submitting a feature article for publication; and (3) Consider asking a local business to become a new advertising Sponsor who will help grow 22 Marple Friends & Neighbors / Bringing People Together

the page count of our magazine so we can publish more monthly features about local residents, youth, seniors and organizations in Marple Township. Sometimes I do answer this question specifically, by saying “Find us a trusted Attorney or Chiropractor who will serve our community as our Expert Contributor.”

Q4. Why don’t I see a particular business being a Sponsor of our hometown magazine?

This harder-to-answer question is often asked by readers who love our magazine and also patronize local Broomall businesses that are not being seen as a Sponsor in our community magazine. Sometimes, those readers even name a specific local Jeweler, Lawyer, Deli, Doctor, Physical Therapist, Orthodontist, Chiropractor, Tailor, Car Dealership, Barber, Auto Body Shop, Seafood Store or Restaurant.

I’m always careful to answer this question by saying that regardless, we should always shop local whenever possible. Some readers press and ask if we have invited a specific business to be a Sponsor or Expert Contributor. If we have not, it’s likely due to that business being outside our social-media-in-print network and I haven’t yet scheduled a meeting with the owner, in which case I may ask that reader to introduce me to that business owner and perhaps help me schedule that meeting. But when a reader asks me about a specific business whose owner I’ve been trying to invite or whom I’ve met with and was told they have no interest, I’ll say so, with disappointment and not really knowing why. Too often a business will think I am reaching out to sell advertising in a magazine. Well yes, but you readers know it’s much more: It’s community sponsorship of Marple Township homeowners, available to businesses that know Broomall homeowners are very important to the success of their business.
