Dear Friends & Neighbors, PUBLICATION TEAM

They say March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. Not sure about this year. The lion has been on the prowl all winter. We’ll see. But I’m ready to March into spring!

PUBLISHER: Bob Blaisse EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT TO THE PUBLISHER: Liz Burnett CONTENT COORDINATOR: Holly Stupak DESIGNER: Kim Cesati CONTRIBUTING PHOTOGRAPHER: Sierra Clark, Sierra Clark Photography, www.SierraClarkPhoto.com COVER PHOTO STYLISTS: Mary Rosato, Salon Bella CONTRIBUTING WRITERS: Bob Blaisse, Holly Stupak, Sheila Turner-Hilliard, Liz Burnett, Doug Humes, Chris Stack, Lindsey Poeth, CSA®, Robert L. I want to stop shoveling snow and start shoveling mulch. And I’m looking forward to seeing the crocus popping up and the forsythia popping out. With that in mind, I can’t help but give a shout out to our senior advertising Sponsor, Seth Pancoast, the elder, who has been delivering mulch in our region for more years than most have lived in Broomall. I know Seth Pancoast as a local businessman, historian and my octogenarian friend who, like all of us, has been getting through COVID times and is looking forward to better times this spring when the phone will start ringing for mulch deliveries again.

Contact Publisher: Bob Blaisse Email: BBlaisse@BestVersionMedia.com Phone: 610-453-5536

This spring, have some fun meeting Seth Pancoast by phone when you need to have your mulch delivered to your home. Seth’s ancestors first came to Marple Township at the same time, on the same ship that brought William Penn to Philadelphia! Seth’s stories are worth the price of a yard of mulch. And you get the mulch too! See Seth’s first spring ad on page 17.

COMMUNITY SUBMISSIONS Have feedback or questions about how to submit events, updates, ideas for articles, high resolution photos, etc.? We will do our best to include as much community information as space permits. Please contact our Content Coordinator Holly Stupak at HStupak@BestVersionMedia.com.

Another Sponsor returning this spring is Emily Speer, Owner of Speer Swim School. That reminds me that spring also brings two early deadlines for summer fun. The first is for Marple Moms in need of swimming lessons for their young children. And while nobody does that better than Broomall’s own mom and swim school owner, Emily Speer, that’s the reason Marple moms and dads call in the spring to get a spot on Emily’s schedule so their kids enjoy the pool safely this summer. See Emily’s ad for her Speer Swim School on page 11.

CONTENT SUBMISSION DEADLINES Content due the 5th of every month.

The other spring deadline for summer fun is that necessary lock down of limited swim club memberships, which is always hard to explain to a family member when membership gets closed. Limited memberships remain at our fun spot, Splash Surf Club, while significant new things are coming to Splash this summer. Don’t miss getting your splash on this summer! See the Splash Surf Club ad on page 11.

Bringing People Together

I hope you enjoyed last month’s snowy days. Now that March is here, I hope we can look forward to fresh air and flowers. Our March Calendar has some events that will have us excited for spring! This month we introduce you to the De Maio Family, a family of nine who moved to Broomall in 2019. Not only do they love the great neighbors they’ve met here so far, but their new home is also the perfect central location to all the fun activities their family is involved in. And just in time for tax season, you'll meet Jack Del Pizzo, CPA and Owner of Del Pizzo & Associates, who has been providing quality, personalized financial guidance to individuals and businesses for over 25 years. I hope you enjoy this month’s issue, which highlights the many ways our Broomall neighbors are Bringing People Together! And many thanks to the readers who have reached out with ideas about families and organizations to highlight. Keep them coming!

Hair Care Resolutions and Wedding Trends

T

he busy winter season is coming to its end, and the beautiful spring is moving in. Winter weather, stress and the pandemic can really put a strain on not only your mind, health and body, but also on your hair. Winter air can cause your hair to become dry and dull. The new year is the perfect time to renew, revive and refresh, and brighten your hair, mood and look! Here are a few hair care resolutions professional stylists recommend for 2021: Resolution #1 — Protect Your Hair: Make sure to always use a trustworthy heating tool and a heat protectant product. Professional stylists recommend Hot Tools Irons and Joico Ironclad Thermal Protectant.

Resolution #2 — Stay Consistent with a Trim Every 6 Weeks: A consistent schedule for trimming your hair will keep it healthy, happy and well maintained. Waiting too long to have your hair trimmed will cause breakage and split ends. Resolution #3 — Deep Conditioning Treatment: Every 2 weeks, treat your hair to a deep conditioning treatment either at home or at the salon. A conditioning treatment goes handin-hand with protecting your hair and promoting the longevity and consistency of hair color. Resolution #4 — Book Appointments in Advance: Now more than ever, every small business needs the community’s support. Show your Stylist some love and schedule a few future appointments. As the pandemic continues, the best salons are able to ease your worries and give you the pampering you deserve by following all CDC and State Board of Cosmetology restrictions and guidelines. Some of those health and safety procedures include clients waiting in their car instead of in the salon’s waiting area; masks mandatory for all salon staff and clients; taking temperatures and washing hands upon arrival; and social distancing between Stylists’ hair stations. What is trending this upcoming season? One of the biggest trends is lived-in color, the perfect natural look. Those face-framing baby lights with a root shadow and a loose wavy style is the picturesque version of lived-in natural-looking color and style. Bridal Season 2021: Not only does spring bring showers, it also brings Bridal season. That may be a little different this year, but one thing remains the same: The bride and her attendants need hair styling and makeup! Wedding season is many Stylists’ favorite time of year because it gives them opportunities to be creative and showcase some unique styling and makeup skills. This spring, the wedding and up-do trend is a low soft tousled bun, a chic pulled-back high pony and, of course, accessories! M

Student of the Month Written by Liz Burnett

Noah Curry! Nominate the Next Student of the Month! Any student in grades 7 –12 who resides within the borders of the Marple Newtown School District can be nominated by a parent, teacher or themself. Send an email to SOTM@SproulLanes.com explaining several reasons why the student excels in Service to friendship, school or other local communities. Academic or athletic excellence may be considered but is not required. The Winner will be featured in next month's magazine and will also receive a Sproul Lanes Pizza Bowl Gift Certificate good for 2 hours of bowling for up to 10 people plus pizza, sodas, snacks and free shoe rental.

The March Sproul Lanes Student of the Month is Noah Curry, a Senior at Devon Preparatory School! Noah received a Certificate of Achievement, and looks forward to enjoying his award: a “Pizza Bowl” party courtesy of Sproul Lanes, our Sponsor of this program. In the seven years Noah has attended Devon Prep, he has eagerly participated in many school-sponsored and also family-initiated service activities and programs that benefit people of all ages in the Philadelphia area. Noah has served as an assistant at some schools and mental health facilities; planted trees to beautify the community; collected clothing and other items for Veterans; visited the sick in nursing homes; played cards with residents in assisted living facilities; and prepared and packaged food for food banks and for direct distribution to the hungry. Noah frequently uses his singing talent to create enjoyment for others. He has performed in many of his school’s plays and musicals. Now a long-time member in his school’s Choral Tide vocal group, Noah demonstrates leadership by mentoring younger and newer group members, and encouraging them to feel more confident about sharing their time and talent for the benefit of the group and their audiences. Noah, an Honor Student in Devon Prep’s challenging curriculum, loves to draw and is considering a career in Digital Arts and Animation. That may be a great way to serve others for this fine young man who “has a gift for making people feel good about themselves” and who values friendship so highly that during the pandemic, he helped his friends stay in touch and not be discouraged by organizing group outdoor social activities, online game nights and Zoom gatherings. Congratulations again, Noah, from your Marple Newtown Friends & Neighbors! May your Devon Prep years inspire you to continue to share your time and talents with many others in college and beyond!

Bringing People Together in Marple with National Honors

P

eople ask me when, why, and how I was able to launch Marple Friends & Neighbors magazine in print and online at www.MarpleMag.com. Three years gets us to the when. And as for the why, you know our mission and motto: To be Bringing People Together in Marple. We do it by means of what has come to be called social media in print, or simply, as we call it, Marple‘s hometown magazine. As far as how I was able to launch this magazine, my answer is usually unexpected to most who ask, thinking it was my own investment, or years of involvement in local organizations, or my background in advertising, which took natural steps forward. Nope. All that helped, but two things were needed even more. First, I needed Best Version Media, the fastest-growing print media company in North America. Now publishing hundreds of hometown magazines like ours, it was BVM that picked us. BVM picked Marple as a hometown to back, and BVM backed me to serve as the Publisher for our hometown magazine, which launched in 2018. Yes, we first needed BVM, but BVM is not the answer to how our magazine came to be for the residents of Marple Township. If you’re a regular reader, you know how. I’ll tell you again but first let me tell you of the great honor that has come to us, made possible by those responsible for how our magazine

Don’t Get Stuck

became possible. And by honor, I mean a national honor that Marple shares. Our hometown magazine and our sister publication, Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors, combined for a remarkable top honor among all of Best Version Media magazines. Humbly I share this because the honor belongs to us all, represented by yours truly, who has been named Best Version Media’s #1 Publisher of 2020 among its BVM’s Publishers of hundreds of hometown magazines. Wow! Number 1 in North America. That honor brings me to the how all our magazines came to be. And again, if you’re a regular reader, you know how: It’s our advertising Sponsors who made this magazine possible. That’s how our magazine came to be: Our advertising Sponsors who willingly decided to use their limited marketing budgets on us, to show us how much Marple means to their business and how much we mean to them. Their advertising in our magazine is not only how we paid the expense of mailing your hometown magazine to you for free every month; it also paid for our writers, designers, graphics, ink and paper, which you know from the quality of our magazine, is not inexpensive.

The De Maio Family: Sinking Roots in Marple Written by Holly Stupak Photos by Sierra Clark Photography www.SierraClarkPhoto.com

T

his month we are pleased to introduce you to the De Maio Family: Pete, Tricia and their seven children. From New Jersey to Phoenixville to Havertown, the De Maios are now sinking their roots in Marple. Tricia and Pete are high school sweethearts fom south Jersey. Pete was a sophomore at St. Augustine Prep when he found out that he’d be transferring to a new school, Sacred Heart High School. “I really didn’t want to change schools and leave all my friends,” Pete recalled, “but it turned out to be a blessing.” When he got to Sacred Heart, he met Tricia, also a sophomore there. The two clicked. Now, 17 years of marriage and 7 kids later, the De Maios say their faith has gotten them through the ups and downs of life and marriage and has made them stronger. After graduating from high school, Pete took classes at St. Joseph’s University, and eventually transferred to Temple University, where he studied Risk Management and Insurance. During college, Pete worked as a salesman for Cutco Knives, working his way up to District Manager. He opened up a Cutco office in Arizona, but after a year, he and Tricia were starting a family and wanted to be close to their parents and siblings. He then decided to follow in his dad’s footsteps, and he started working in the insurance business back in Pennsylvania. Tricia had grown up on a farm in Vineland, NJ, as the oldest of four girls. After graduating from Sacred Heart High School, she went on to earn her BSN from Villanova University in 1999. Tricia said going to Villanova was a lifelong dream, and she found their nursing program challenging and rewarding. While a student there, she did her clinical rotation at Presbyterian Hospital in West Philadelphia, and after graduation, she was offered a job on that hospital’s Orthopedics floor. Tricia and Pete dated all through college. Just as they were starting their careers, Pete’s family was faced with not one but two devastating cancer diagnoses: His mother and his brother Mike were diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Pete said his brother’s terminal diagnosis not only opened him up to a closer relationship with God, but it prompted him to make a big commitment to Tricia. “One night when we were having a family dinner, my brother Mike pulled me aside,” recalled Pete. “He said to me ‘You love Tricia, right? So why don’t you marry her already?’ I realized then that I didn’t know what I was waiting for.” 8

Marple Friends & Neighbors / Bringing People Together

Tricia and Peter De Maio

The couple quickly began planning their wedding, even moving it up sooner than they originally planned so Mike would be there to attend it. Pete’s mother survived her bout with NHL, but sadly, Mike passed away in August 2003, only three months before the wedding. In August 2005, Pete and Tricia welcomed their first child, Petey, who was born on his Uncle Mike's birthday. “Petey even reminds us of Mike! He’s happy-go-lucky and doesn’t take anything for granted,” said Pete. Petey is a sophomore at Devon Prep where he plays on the basketball and baseball teams. Their son Nicky was born only 13 months after Petey, and the boys are very close, sharing a bedroom and a love of sports. “Nicky is our jokester,” said Tricia. “He’s always trying to make one of us laugh.” He also plays baseball and basketball for Devon Prep, and he and his brother Petey have both played for the Marple Newtown Basketball Association and the Marple Newtown Baseball League. The De Maios’ oldest daughter, Alyssa, is Tricia’s “right-hand woman” because “she’s like a little mom,” said Tricia. “She’s mature and organized, and if someone needs help, she’s right there.” A 7th-grader at St. Dot’s in Drexel Hill, Alyssa’s favorite sport is field hockey, and she also plays softball and basketball.

After a few years of a “break” in between having children, Pete and Tricia’s fourth, Jenna, was born. With several years separating her from her older siblings, Jenna is more like a first born child. Her parents describe her as unique and full of drama. Jenna is a fourth grader at St. Dot’s and she participates in gymnastics and on local soccer, basketball and softball teams. Next is Vincenzo, a 3rd-grader at St. Dot’s. Known as the family favorite, he adores his mom and looks up to his older brothers, especially when it comes to sports like football, basketball and baseball. Six-year-old Gia, a 1st-grader at St. Dot’s, was the baby of the family for five years. Tricia said Gia runs the house and dominates the family with her loud, outgoing personality. Last but not least is 18-month-old Giovanni, who Tricia says is their easiest child since someone in the family is always doting on him. When Pete and Tricia were first married, they bought a home in Phoenixville, and Tricia continued to work at Presbyterian Hospital while Pete continued working for Cutco. Tricia and Pete were lucky to have a lot of help from Tricia’s parents who babysat while Tricia worked her shifts at the hospital. She also took classes towards her Nurse Practitioner degree, which she hopes to finish when the time is right. After Jenna was born, Tricia decided to take a break from her job as a nurse, to become a stay-at-home mom. “I really loved being a nurse,” said Tricia, “but I love being able to be home with the kids

Resident Feature and involved in everything from their schools to sports and helping with homework. I was working when my older kids were young, so I really appreciate the time I have now with the younger ones.” In 2008, Pete opened his own Allstate agency in Drexel Hill, and he recently opened a second location in Langhorne. “I love the challenge working in the insurance business offers,” said Pete, “and I love being able to help people. I saw firsthand how important life insurance was after my brother passed away and his insurance took care of his wife and children.” Pete also said what is great about running his own agency is the flexibility it offers him. “Tricia and I really have to ‘divide and conquer’ when it comes to the kids. I love how my schedule allows me to help with the carpooling and I’m able to attend the kids’ sporting events,” he added. After living in Phoenixville and then Havertown for many years, Tricia and Pete began looking for more space for their large family. In August 2019, they found the perfect house in Broomall. “We love being here,” said Tricia. “The yard is perfect and the location is central to everything. We think Broomall is one of the best-kept secrets!”

“ ” …We think Broomall is one of the best-kept secrets!

Every summer, the De Maios like to spend as much time as they can at the Jersey shore, at Pete’s parents’ home in Ventnor. “I love being able to give my kids some of the same experiences I had as a child,” said Pete. “We spend a lot of time at the beach and riding bikes on the Atlantic City Boardwalk.” The De Maio family also loves all things Disney, and they have

enjoyed several family vacations at their Walt Disney World timeshare, which Tricia and Pete purchased in 2001, before they started their family. One of the most meaningful trips Pete took was with his mother in 2013, to the National Centre for Padre Pio, a spiritual destination in Barto, PA, that honors the beloved Saint Padre Pio. Known as a place of healing, peace and tranquility, his mother wanted to go there, to pray for her own health. After recovering from Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in 2005 and underwent many rounds of treatments. But for the past several years she has been cancer-free. “I can’t explain it,” said Pete. “My mom is a living miracle. She no longer suffers with cancer and it can’t be explained by modern medicine.” Moving to a new home in a new town is a big decision for anyone, but moving a large family and helping everyone acclimate to a new area was super-challenging! We are thankful the De Maio Family chose to be our friends and neighbors in Broomall, and we thank them for sinking roots here! What to Expect from a TOP-NOTCH ROOFING CONTRACTOR

eed a new roof to fix one or more leaks? Has your existing roof outlived its typical lifespan? Would a new roof significantly improve your home’s curb appeal? Regardless of WHY you may soon select a roofing contractor, WHO you select can dramatically affect how satisfied you are during and after your roofing project. Satisfaction is an opinion or feeling of having all your expectations fully met. As a roofing customer, your expectations will be met — or perhaps not met — by the behaviors and conversations of roofing contractors who provide estimates and by the contractor whom you select for the project. From start to finish, your level of satisfaction will be based on how well or poorly a roofing contractor (or any business) demonstrates these Five Customer Expectations. 1. Be Responsive, On Time, Honest and Transparent No response when you request an estimate and a contractor showing up late or not at all with no valid explanation are serious causes for concern. Everyone’s time is valuable, and businesses that don’t recognize that or who don’t seem fully honest may not deserve to get your business. 2. Listen and Empathize with Your Concerns Notice whether you’re given time to fully explain your concerns and goals for the roofing project. Are you allowed to ask all your questions, and are you satisfied with the answers? Is the conversation a two-way street or does it seem you’re being treated simply as another possible sale? Ask about OUR NEW Cleaning & Surface Protection!

3. Identify and Justify All Recommended Solutions To make a wise decision about which roofing contractor or roofing solution to select, you need to be informed. You need details about the proposed products and clear justifications about their efficiency and cost. If several price options are offered, the PROs and CONs of each option should be clearly defined. And the contractor should be completely comfortable with you asking questions until you feel fully satisfied. 4. Under-Promise and Over-Deliver When selecting a roofing contractor, you should receive in writing a detailed description that includes how they will manage the project and what its timeline will be. Such detail sets your expectations that can be met or even exceeded if all factors involved (weather, product availability, staffing) perfectly align. If you receive no detailed project description, there’s no promise made and no possibility they’ll over-deliver. 5. Make the Project as Painless as Possible Roofing projects are usually messy, noisy, and sometimes inconvenient. But all that plus the expense are justified because your roof is arguably the most important part of your home. A topnotch roofing contractor does and says everything required to be easy to work with and gives you great reasons during and after the project to be proud and glad you selected them. M

People In Places John Kincade

Broomall Native John Kincade Returns to Philadelphia Sports Radio by Holly Stupak Photos courtesy of John Kincade

G

rowing up in Broomall, John Kincade was always a big fan of the local Philadelphia sports teams. Now, after 20+ years of hosting radio shows in Atlanta, John is back to his Philadelphia-area roots. In January, John was named the new morning host on 97.5 The Fanatic, and his show is officially called The John Kincade Show. “I’m so happy to be back in my hometown!” said John. “Getting to talk about and cheer on the teams that I grew up with is a dream come true.” John grew up on Malin Rd in Broomall with his parents and two older siblings. After attending St. Anastasia School and then graduating from Cardinal O’Hara, he went on to Temple University where he graduated with a degree in Radio/Television and Film. While at Temple, John worked as a college intern for the Flyers (his favorite Philadelphia sports team!), helping incorporate video highlights and statistics for the coaches. After graduating from college, John didn’t immediately go into radio broadcasting. In his late 20s, he began working in sales and marketing for a Malvern-based company called Shared Medical Systems (SMS; now Siemens). “I had a passion for radio,” said John, “but at the time, I was making a good living in sales and I was good at it. I wasn’t quite ready to give up that lifestyle.”

hockey coach in Chester County. “I loved coaching,” said John. “It’s one of my lifelong pleasures to run into a former player and hear them address me as ‘Coach’. I’m so proud when I see them now as businessmen and fathers.” For many years, John said he was “burning the candle at both ends.” While working at SMS and coaching hockey, he also took on sports radio gigs, including one at WIP - 610. Then, in 1995, when he moved to Atlanta to continue working for SMS, he also continued working weekends in sports radio at a local station. In 1997, John made a major career change: He left his job at SMS to pursue a full-time career in sports radio. While in Atlanta, John hosted a show called Buck and Kincade and also

During that time, John had another passion: hockey, which came from his time working with the Flyers. He decided to use some of the skills he had learned while working as an intern for Flyers Coach Mike Keenan, and he became a high school

shows for ESPN and CBS Sports, including The John Kincade Show. He also co-hosted a podcast with Shaquille O’Neal called The Big Shaq. “I couldn’t believe a kid from Broomall got to partner with one of the most famous athletes in the world,” said John. “It was definitely a career highlight for me!” When John’s radio show ended in Atlanta in 2020, he found a new radio home back in Philadelphia. “This opportunity was too good to pass up,” he said. And so far, the reaction to John’s radio show has been great. “It helps that people know me as a Philly guy!”

Since January, John has been busy getting reacclimated to the Philadelphia area, getting to know his team and launching the new show. “I’m very excited about this new endeavor!” said John. “For me, being in sports radio is like being able to play in a toy store. Getting to work in Philadelphia to discuss and debate the teams I’ve loved and followed since I was a kid is the best feeling in the world!” M

Giving to his community and lending his voice to good causes is another of John’s passions. A two-time cancer survivor, John has been raising money for the National Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for the past 20 years. Through his charity work, including an annual event called “Strike Out Leukemia & Lymphoma Radiothon,” he has been able to help raise $2.2 million. Married for 19 years, John and his wife Cristina have a 17-year-old daughter, Olivia, and a 2-year-old Shih-Tzu whom they named Nick “Nicky” Foles. Although Cristina and Olivia plan on staying in Atlanta while Olivia finishes high school, John said they cannot wait to move to the Philadelphia area. “Our family loves vacationing in Disney and Las Vegas, but what they are really looking forward to is going to the Jersey Shore,” said John. “And they’ve been to the Philadelphia area many times to visit family. They’re huge fans!”

A Stitch in Time…

Y

ou’ve probably heard these sayings since childhood: A stitch in time saves nine. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

The English language is replete with cautionary wisdom, easily remembered sayings meant to teach us that thoughtful action, taken in a timely fashion, will save us from potentially harmful and/or expensive outcomes. This lesson has never been more important as we all cautiously navigate our way through the challenges of this pandemic. While we must all be as careful as possible by following the guidelines for masks, distancing, hand washing and vaccination, it is also imperative that we visit our health care providers for preventive and health maintenance appointments. Over the last 11 months, virtual consultations have helped fill the gap with our physicians. But there is no virtual substitute for annual physicals, eye exams and especially preventive dental care. Despite the challenges we face with the virus, everyone in the family has ongoing preventive and restorative dental needs. Children: As baby teeth are lost and adult teeth emerge, timely cleanings, sealants, fluoride treatment and orthodontic evaluation are critical to maintain children’s healthy teeth and gums. Delays and missteps at this time can result in amplification of otherwise minor conditions. Teens: Teenagers are at highest risk for developing new tooth decay between dental visits because they are the largest consumers of sugary drinks; they have the least consistent home care habits (especially while in braces); and they are notoriously

resistant to parental oversight of their dietary choices. When these factors combine, they often result in the rapid formation of cavities between the teeth and along the gum line. Adults: In adults, tooth decay and gum disease tend to be slow and silent. Despite good intentions, many adults fall into bad habits during long absences from the dental office. A visit every six months allows watchful management of the health of teeth and gums. Prevention and early detection of decay and gum disease are critical to lifelong dental health. Seniors: Older adults face the same issues as other adults but seniors also have a higher risk of root cavities. Age and certain medications can lead to chronic dry mouth, which can accelerate root decay and gum disease. Regular check-ups combined with prescription strength fluoride gel is a very effective way to preserve the health of remaining teeth and the stability of the bridges and partials many seniors rely on to chew properly. Your health professionals have worked very hard to make their offices as safe as humanly possible for their patients so that we can all return to a world where prevention is indeed the best medicine. Healthy smiles, teeth and gums don’t happen by accident! Schedule your family for their routine dental examinations today. M

Senior Living 101

N

avigating the waters of senior living can be overwhelming and confusing. Because of the wide variety of senior housing options, it’s helpful to learn about the differences before you start looking. Here’s a primer to get you started. Independent Living Community (IL): A multi-unit community usually available as a rental. Most ILs offer social and recreational opportunities including 1–2 meals a day, housekeeping, transportation and home health care services, some or all of which may be at an additional cost. Personal Care or Assisted Living Community (PC/AL): They provide a special combination of housing, personalized supportive services and health care to meet the needs of those who do not require full-time skilled nursing but do need help with activities of daily living (ADLs). PCs and ALs offer apartments that vary in size, and also social and recreational opportunities, three meals a day, housekeeping, laundry, and transportation. Memory Care (MC): MC offers specialized programs for residents who suffer from cognitive decline. Programs and activities are planned with dementia care in mind. Overall room sizes are smaller because these residents don’t spend much time in their individual rooms. For residents’ safety, all MC facilities are secured with fences and alarms. Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) for Residential Long-Term Care/Nursing Home: Medicare generally does not cover longterm stays in a nursing home. Most people who enter nursing homes begin by paying for their care out-of-pocket. As you use your resources (like bank accounts and stocks) over a period of time, you may eventually become eligible for Medicaid. Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC): A community that offers residences with several levels of assistance, including IL, PC/AL, skilled nursing, and home care all within one campus. CCRCs typically require a large buy-in or entrance fee as part of the long-term contract between the resident and the community.

Personal Care Home: A licensed residence that provides a watchful environment and personal services to seniors who require varying degrees of supervision and protective care. These homes are smaller, with 2-8 residents, and usually offer a shared or private bedroom and shared bathrooms. Residents typically gather at a dining-room table, to eat home-cooked meals in a homey atmosphere. Personal Care Homes are especially good for individuals who need a lot of care and who have difficulty socializing in large groups. Remember: No family has to go through a senior living transition alone. Senior Living industry experts can help guide you in the direction that’s best for you or your loved one; take you on tours of communities; answer your questions; and be your advocate. Senior Living Advisors provide a free service, so don’t be afraid to ask for help! M

History Spotlight

Toll House No. 5 Written by Doug Humes

T

here was once a border between Marple and Newtown where people were held up every day. The highwayman who made travelers “stand and deliver” there? Toll House No. 5. The structure, a small roadside house with a large pole that blocked the street, was part of the West Chester Turnpike, connecting West Philadelphia and Newtown Square. There was no state highway department back then, so the roads were not well maintained. In winter, they were impassable with mud and ruts; in summer, with dust and ruts.

In 1848, local businessmen decided to form a corporation to improve the road – initially using wooden planks. To pay for these improvements, a toll was charged, at five toll houses between Philadelphia and Newtown Square. An early history reported that in 1897, Toll House 5, near the 10th milestone, was being kept by William Edwards. When a traveler approached, he would stop at the “pike” that blocked his path.

the old milestone was still visible then, and so when they would ride into the city to go to market, when they passed the milestone that said “10 M to P,” they would look at each other and say “That’s a long time to hold it.”

Shares in the Turnpike corporation were owned by local residents like Jane Pratt Photo courtesy of Newtown Square Historical Society

The toll keeper would come out, collect the toll, and then turn the pike, to allow the traveler to pass. The act gave rise to the name of this private road: a turnpike. Longtime resident Jan Elston tells two stories of her mother Janice Edgar’s memories of Toll House 5. As a young girl living in Newtown in the early 1900s, Janice recalled that her mother would give her money for errands in nearby Marple, including money for the toll. She and a friend would ride there on horseback. On their return, if no one was minding the toll gate, Janice and her friend would rush past the gate on their horses and use the money saved to buy candy. Janice also recalled that Cheesesteaks

After 70 years of tolls, some vocal locals began in 1906 to call for “the freeing of the West Chester Turnpike for tolls.” That meant buying out the interests of the Turnpike Company. After pestering the state for years, the locals won: In Media, on April 5, 1918, the State and the County each paid the Turnpike Company $37,500. The officials then drove to Newtown Square, and headed east, telling each toll keeper that their job was over.

ARE YOU AN

IDEAL TEAM PLAYER? Written by Patrick Lencioni, Founder and President, The Table Group

H

ave you ever wondered what makes a person easy to work with? I’m convinced that there are three required virtues that make someone an ideal team player.

The most important of those values is humility. The ultimate foundation of being a team player is a person being willing and able to put the team’s interests ahead of his or her own. Only a truly humble person can do this effectively. Most people recognize and define humility

by contrasting it with arrogance, which, to an extent, is accurate. People who are boastful, proud, egotistical and over-confident are certainly not humble, and they are poison on a team. Whether we’re talking about Little League Baseball, corporate leadership or emergency response, team members with big egos tend to bring down team performance by distracting attention away from the collective goals of the team and demotivating peers who resent their excessive need for attention. But some team members who are not arrogant lack humility, even if others around them don’t see it. Many of these people are beloved for their selflessness, modesty and support for others, but can’t be described as humble because they have an inaccurate, deflated understanding of their own talents and abilities. They hurt their teams by failing to contribute at the level that they could. But that’s not as bad as the people who, like them, discount their abilities, but don’t support and encourage their peers. These may be the most dangerous kind of “non-humble” team players.

is all about social awareness and interpersonal common sense. Ideal team players, in addition to being humble and hungry, know how to understand their colleagues and work with them effectively. They can read a room and understand non-verbal cues, avoiding unnecessary problems that socially awkward people often create. Now, you may be asking, is an ideal team player perfect? Of course not. Even the best team player is going to have a tough day or week or moment from time to time, but those that work to develop their humility, hunger and people smarts will have a serious advantage on teams and in life. It’s not hard to understand why being hungry makes someone an asset on a team; a complacent person rarely makes a team great. However, hunger alone is not a good thing for a team, as it can be directed toward the benefits of the individual more than the team. Only when a person’s drive is applied to benefits of the greater good does hunger become a team asset. The third and final virtue of an ideal team player is something I call smarts. It has nothing to do with intelligence, however, but

How to Help a Grieving Friend

W

alking beside a friend who has lost a loved one is no small task. It’s a journey that will test you, and at times, have you feeling helpless because you can’t take away their pain. As difficult as the road ahead will be, there are a few things you can do to offer your friend comfort, hope and healing. Show Up Don’t say “Let me know if you need anything.” Under normal circumstances, many people aren’t comfortable asking for help because they don’t want to burden others. When people are grieving, their normal ability to make decisions is overwhelmed by intense painful emotions. This is your time to step up by taking care of the things you know they need. It could be a simple trip to the grocery store, delivering a favorite meal or lending a helping hand with the yardwork. Now is the time to talk less and do more.

Listen Sometimes people just need someone who will sit with them and listen. Your friend may want to talk about how they’re feeling or just share stories of their loved one. In either case, it’s important to remember to say less and listen more. Of course it is hard to accept and acknowledge that your words cannot fix this or make it all better, but your friend will appreciate your silence more than you know. When grief can be expressed verbally, and without judgement, space is created for good feelings such as acceptance and peace of mind.

Remember the Little Days Everyone remembers the big days: the holidays, the anniversaries, the birthdays and most especially the day their loved one died. Be that friend who remembers the little days. Share the stories and the meaningful moments of the days that their loved one lived. And don’t worry, you won’t be ruining your friend’s day if you send a random text or pick up the phone. It just may very well make their day a bit brighter! Be There for the Big Days Your friend may not want to celebrate the big days, especially during that first year, and that’s okay. Let your friend decide if they want to skip the family festivities. Someday they may come back around, but allow your friend the space and encouragement to navigate this new path. By offering your compassion, understanding and support, your grieving friend will begin — when they’re ready — to trust that their pain and sadness will eventually be replaced by joy from memories of happier days. Marple Newtown Ice Hockey Club:

An Unrivaled Hockey Experience for Marple Newtown Youth by Holly Stupak

hen it comes to youth sports, parent commitment and support is crucial. The devotion of ice hockey parents goes even further, especially because players need a lot of protective equipment and ice rinks aren’t always nearby. When Broomall residents Larry and Janell Besa’s children showed an interest in playing ice hockey, they were all in. In 2013, the Besas re-established the Marple Newtown Ice Hockey Club (MNIHC), which has since dedicated itself to the development of youth hockey players who live in the Marple Newtown School District. When the Besa’s two older children, Emma and Larry Jr., were in elementary school, they first tried ice skating through a Learn to Ice Skate program. “They both thoroughly enjoyed skating,” recalled their dad Larry, “and they were really competitive with each other!” At that time, there were nearby ice hockey clubs they could join, but there wasn’t any local Marple ice hockey organization. “In the 1970s, Marple had a club that was a powerhouse in ice hockey,” Larry explained, “but by the ‘90s, the club and team had dissolved, partly due to financial reasons but also due to lack of interest. When we discovered that other local Marple Newtown families were having a renewed interest in the sport, we got together, to re-establish the club.” Larry Besa, a police officer in the K-9 unit at Temple University, and Janell Besa, who works in Finance at Vanguard, used their professional skills and knowledge to get the club off the ground. “Putting together an ice hockey club can be daunting!” said Janell. “It requires a lot of organizational skills, especially for finding ice times at local rinks, which can be quite expensive.”

Kathy Miller and Lisa Fino. “We all first met in interested families’ homes,” said Larry, “and we all shared the same mission: To provide an unrivaled hockey experience to children in Marple Newtown.” Through competitive play, the club emphasizes sportsmanship, accountability, self-discipline and respect for others. For the first few years, Larry ran the club and coached an 8th-grade team. As his children got older and began playing on the high school team, he wanted to pass the baton to younger families. In 2016, Matt DeNucci became President of the MN Ice Hockey Club. Matt and his family had joined the club a year earlier, when his son, Matthew was in kindergarten. Matt’s 2nd grade daughter, CeCe, watched her brother play for a few months, became interested, and they’ve both been playing ever since. As President, Matt is involved in everything from hiring coaches to overseeing all eight Board members. “Hockey is really a lifestyle,” said Matt. “It takes a lot of dedication and sacrifice on the part of both the players and their parents.” The MN Ice Hockey Club (www. MNIHC.Club) offers co-ed teams for the elementary, middle and high school levels. They all practice at the PNY Sports Arena in West Chester. Each team gets only so much time on the ice. “Our players know that ice rental time is expensive,” said Matt, “so as soon as they get out on the ice, they are focused and ready to go.” The Marple Newtown High School Ice Hockey team is open to all MNHS students. Since 2016, Collin Hannan has served as the MNHS Ice Hockey Club’s Advisor & Registrar. A social studies teacher at MNHS since 2003, Collin is also a hockey dad: His son Tyler is a freshman on the team and his younger son Lyam plays for the middle school team. “I’m always so proud of our

players!” said Collin. “The high school team is a very young team. Despite some of the difficult odds they’ve faced, they always leave their games smiling and happy. And they’re proud to represent Marple Newtown High School.” Emma Besa, now a senior on the MN Ice Hockey team, recently committed to play Women’s Ice Hockey at King’s College. One of three girls on the MNHS team, Emma said she was drawn to the sport when her brother and dad were first playing hockey. “It's been a really fun club to be a part of!” said Emma.

“The best part is the friends you meet. I am still best friends with the same people who I have been playing hockey with for years.” Studies have shown that hockey not only builds confidence and self-esteem, it also teaches discipline and teamwork. And kids who play hockey at a young age are more likely to continue to play that sport throughout their lives. The Marple Newtown Ice Hockey Club’s coaches and volunteers continue to encourage today's young athletes to be lifelong hockey enthusiasts! M
